What’s in a Name?

Excellent article on our semireclusive superstar Chris Wondolowski (“A Simple Goal,” cover story, July 25). You obviously did your homework. Better than any Quakes-related article I recall

seeing in the SJMN (aside from the “English prick” comment).

We say soccer (contraction of AsSOCiation Football) to differentiate from American football, but it’s football/futbol/ voetbal in every country except the United States (and Canada—go BC Lions!) The English only standardized the rules, created the terminology and spread it everywhere they went.

Goosed California isn’t the only place looking out for the welfare of ducks and geese (“Free Foie,” July 18). The Compass Group, a British company that caters events such as Wimbledon, has decided it will no longer serve foie gras due to ethical concerns.

It’s an important reminder

that California’s foie gras ban was the right thing to do, even as chefs and restaurants look for sneaky loopholes to continue serving diseased livers to diners.

Birds force-fed for foie gras have up to four pounds of grain and fat pumped into their stomachs through metal pipes every day.

The pipes sometimes puncture the birds’ throats, and the force-feeding process causes their livers to balloon to as much as 10 times their natural size, sometimes causing their livers to burst. It is common for birds who have been force-fed to suffer from hepatic encephalopathy, a serious brain ailment that occurs when their livers fail. This seems radical for a moment of gustatory sensation.

Hopefully, other businesses and states will also find their moral compass and agree that it is better to have a big heart for animals’ welfare than to dine on their engorged livers, especially when chefs are capable of creating so many other wonderful options.

Oliverio’s independent ways may irk council colleagues, but voters don’t seem to mind. Reed and RON GONZALES were lone wolves before they became mayor. P.O.’s strong suit, however, may be his wellestablished fiscal conservatism.

While Cortese, Liccardo and Nguyen have shifted positions over the years to claim the elusive middle, Oliverio has remained a tight-fisted budget hawk and a social liberal. So businesses seeking a predictable landscape will likely throw money to an Oliverio run.

He has written more than 250 columns for the Metro-shepherded San Jose Inside web service, so his positions are better documented than those of pretty much anyone in local political life. And while the others will likely hire political consultants to help draft their positions, Pierluigi keeps his own counsel and manages his own schedule.

His biggest downside may be that he doesn’t project a mayoral image.

Then again, neither have most of San Jose’s recent mayors. Asked to discuss his own electoral prospects, Oliverio waved off speculation in a predictably cavalier fashion. “I’m not participating in this conversation,” he said.

These characters have performed for a quarter-century now, tirelessly improvising onstage for crowds of all ages, plus corporate team-building seminars, bachelor parties and endless league competitions across the country.

Unlike standup comedy, in which one mook rattles off preplanned quips to a jaded audience, fired up on overpriced, watered-down

drinks and greasy chicken wings, a ComedySportz match features two teams of comedy “act-letes,” plus a referee calling fouls.

An average of seven to 12 games are played during a match, drawn from an entire repertoire of improvised games. Every show transpires in a different way, with different players and games, plus different crowds supplying different suggestions. At the end, the fans judge the whole thing. It can be a super-happy, family-type of event.

This Saturday, however, ComedySportz will debut a new performance unsuitable for all ages.

A new show, titled “Down in Front,” will be an 18-and-over, B-movie-style extravaganza of atrocities inspired by the format of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Nuclear families are not allowed for this one, apparently.

Courtney Pong, a ComedySportz performer, gave me the lowdown on how the whole mess will unfold: “We start off with the cast coming out. They’ll ask for two or three suggestions. The team will create a movie title on the spot, and then we’ll present a B-movie to you.”

Full disclosure: Pong and I already know each other, since I spent a few years observing her schlep garlic fries at Gordon Biersch as I buried my life’s dissatisfactions in hundreds of Blonde Bocks. But that was at least five years ago, and now ComedySportz is producing San Jose’s first rolling-blunder revue of improvised B-movie atrocities. It is well worth observing.

For the gig, the performers need no instructions or guidance, but just enough keywords from the audience to trigger a rocking improvisation.

The audience becomes the muse, with creativity and improv skills driving the rest.

“We ask the audience, ‘Just give us three or four words,’” Pong explained. “From that, we can choose a title or incorporate that into the Bmovie. It’s very much that they just

throw out suggestions and we use them however we see fit and create a B-movie and that’s it.”

As we talked on the phone, I spontaneously gave Pong some keywords: spaceship, chain-link fence, babies, heroin. Were that the case at the show, she explained, an instant movie could easily emerge.

“We might then title the film Baby Spaceships From Mars,” Pong said, improvising over the phone. “And we’ll do a 30-minute movie, and anything else we didn’t put in the title, we’ll find a way to use it within the theme.”

Even better, just like Mystery Science Theater 3000, a few kooks in the front row will provide their own commentary over the PA system. It all happens live, improvised, on the spot. Connoisseurs of camp, bring your keywords.

The idea originally came from the Portand, Ore., chapter of ComedySportz. Each team in 20 different cities across the United States has its own format and special performances, so when the local San Jose team visited Portland, they were inspired.

“We actually saw this show about four years ago and finally decided to bring [it] here to San Jose,” Pong said. “We wanted to add more types of improv to the Bay Area. We have our regular bread-and-butter show that does quite well across all ages—kids to grandparents—but we wanted more improv, more material and just more variety for people to come watch.”

In any case, Down in Front is a great concept for a show. A million ideas come to mind immediately. I can’t wait to see who shows up and provides Herschell Gordon Lewis references, just to see if the cast actually gets them. In any event, 25 years of improvising onstage is definitely something to brag about.

“We’re the longest-running show after Beach Blanket Babylon,” Pong boasted.

Yet surprisingly, that wasn’t always the case. Instead, the singer, dancer and actor, who headlines San Jose Pride this weekend at Discovery Meadow, says he was actually “the most shut-off person when I was younger.” And his journey from that icy teenager to a man with “rule by heart” tattooed on his chest began in the most unexpected of places.

“At 15, I was asked if I wanted a job in entertainment at Paramount’s Great America. I took it, not knowing that it would set me up as a performer for the rest of my life,” he says. “I was acting, dancing and singing in stage shows for years at that park.”

The rigor of doing show after show after show every day for the crowds boosted his confidence immensely, so much so that he counts it among the most important formative steps in

launching his musical career—along with a little soul-searching.

“Performing at Great America, being in bands, traveling the world and learning to love myself were the most important steps in becoming who I am today,” he says.

Once he realized what an outlet it could be, music became his passion.

“I knew that the only way I could express emotion was to write it down.

I started playing the piano at the same time as I got the Paramount gig,” Jameson says. “I just took to it naturally, like the sound was part of my mental makeup. It was the way to marry the feeling of music with the depth of words that I had kept internal.”

His growth has continued on his second release, the EP A History of Heroes. Though he made his first real impact on the music industry with his single “Ribcage” off his 2010 debut album, The Invention of Love. The video probably had even more of an impact, both metaphorically and practically, with its sly equation of boxing with affairs of the heart—both delivering their blows to the body part of the title.

His latest single, however, shows how he’s evolved both musically and lyrically. Heavily infused with dubstep, “Mr. Soldier Man” expands on his effort to bring meaning to dance music, digging into the definition of masculinity.

With his themes of empowerment and self-reliance, Jameson would seem to be a natural choice for a Pride celebrations, but there’s only one place he’ll do it.

“San Jose’s Pride is the only pride I do, by choice,”he says. “It is my hometown, and it is the place that I developed as a human being. So I am extremely excited for it!”

First off, says Jameson, he likes working with Gary Walker, who has been director of the festival for almost 15 years. But he also feels that the festival’s mission is very much in line with his own. “The event is about love,” he says. “Self-love, love for others and [love for] community. The purpose in life is what drives me to act. Any chance to inspire someone is a blessing itself.”

Jameson now lives in Los Angeles, where he’s also pursuing an acting career. He just finished his second film with director Charlie Vaughn, the indie drama Saltwater.

“Charlie actually saw me performing my song ‘Ribcage’ in an L.A. nightclub one night and came up to me asking if I had an actor’s reel. I said, ‘I don’t,’ but he wanted me to come in and audition for his horror film Bloody Mary 3-D. Whenever the universe gives you an opportunity, you take it.”

Jameson played the lead role—a rock star—in the movie, which came out at the end of last year, and “Ribcage” was used in the film as well.

This will be his homecoming show, of sorts, since “going Hollywood.”

He’ll perform Saturday at the festival, along with S.F. comedian Carrie Avritt and emcee Diamond John.

Sunday’s entertainment features Grammy-award winning singer (and Tony Award-winning actress) Jennifer Holiday, Dominican vocalist Kat Deluna, Kat Graham from The Vampire Diaries, DJ Tony Moran and Flava.

ALTHOUGH today’s political discourse has descended to levels usually associated only with sump pumps, our forebears were hardly models of rhetorical rectitude either. Mitt Romney considers the brouhaha over his tax returns deeply unfair, but he hasn’t had to endure the vicious visual taunting dished out to another 1 percenter, King Louis-Philippe I of France, by a satirical Parisian rag known as La Caricature. “When Artists Attack the King,” at Stanford’s Cantor Arts Center, offers some prime examples of scathing ridicule by cartoonists wielding acid-tipped quill pens. No aspect of their targets’ physiognomy was considered off-limits. The king, a hefty fellow, was often depicted with the bottom-heavy form of a rotting pear.

King Louis-Philippe came to power in 1830 in the When Artists wake of the July Revolution, which toppled Charles X. Supposedly more liberal, Louis-Philippe promised Attack the King to chart a course between royalism and resistance. The honeymoon proved to be short-lived, and the king’s Runs through Nov. 11 “reforms” looked increasingly like a stealth movement Cantor Arts Center, to bolster a new elite: the haute bourgeoisie. Leading Stanford the liberal charge was La Caricature, a journal of invective that combined words and engravings to powerful effect.

Charles Philipon, a lithographer and publisher, turned loose the young Honoré Daumier and other artists to produce prints that consistently evoked the king’s ire.

One can sympathize, at a distance, with the king’s feelings when he saw Daumier’s lithograph of his daughter as an obese prostitute surrounded by ill-gotten gold.

In another print, Daumier transforms the king himself into a grotesque Buddha figure dripping with fat rolls. Most frequently, La Caricature equated the king’s shapeless body to the slang meaning of pear (la poire): “fat head,” “idiot,” etc. In one elaborate image, Auguste Desperret turns the king into a pear-shaped fortress under siege by the press, firing projectile-shaped journals at his highness.

More directly, Daumier’s Travel Across the Attentive Population presents the king from behind, his thighs bulging out of his saddle, as he rides across a landscape full of naked corpses, while flocks of vultures prepare to feast. In an almost elegiac mood, Daumier’s Lower the Curtain, the Farce Is Over finds the king, rotund as ever, sporting a clown’s checkered suit and wide ruffled collar. Tipping his comic chapeau, he points to the populace that has been his captive audience for too long. This print is distinguished by its graphic starkness and the use of heavy black shadow framing the king.

The staff at La Caricature wasn’t above blowing its own horn. Daumier’s So, You Want to Meddle With the Press!! shows a printer squashing the king’s head under the heavy iron platen of his press—a timeless statement of principle for newspapers, if they are willing to pay the price. Eventually, the price became too high as La Caricature was hounded out of business in 1835.—Michael S. Gant

Naglee Park Garage; San Jose Wednesday – 6pm; Free; All Ages L.A.’s Wild Reeds have gone to go to great lengths to distinguish themselves from your typical runof-the-mill folk group. For one, they have three phenomenal singers who are nearly always creating a forceful, captivating threepart harmony. For another, their influences seem less about Woody Guthrie and a whole lot more about classic jazz and blues. As far as instrumentation goes, they may have several songs with just the standard acoustic guitar, but others feature a mandolin, a banjo or even an organ. With two incredible, independently released albums

under their belt, they are definitely a group to watch out for. (AC)

“I like ’em big and tall.” I get the big and tall thing, but I’m not sure I even want to know what the first part means. She also hopes they

walk like James Dean and dress like Johnny Cash. That kind of fits with the Livermore singer/songwriter’s “stomp and groove” sound, which is two parts rock to one part country, though she likes to throw in an island twist sometimes with reggae-ska riffage. Generally, she plays acoustic, but her band Lisa Marie and the Lust Triggers goes way bigger and louder. They’ll be celebrating San Jose Bar & Grill’s 10year-anniversary at this show, with the Whiskey Avengers and VJ1. (SP)

Cruz emcees or anything anything, but did you ever notice that Santa Cruz emcees have a lot to say? Dense verbiage is the rule of the land, and Eliquate is no exception. He’s both wordy and worldly, stepping to the mic with a laid-back flow that rolls like a wave but doesn’t break for anything. In his song “The Nineties,” he claims he would have “made it” in that decade, and he’s probably right. His sound is live alt-rock meets alt-hop, with the emphasis on riffs and drums instead of beatmaking. With the ’90s’ imminent comeback, he shouldn’t have long to wait before a bunch of white guys goofing in their basement with catchy raps, guitars, a monkey and the occasional zombie is cool again.

This is hands-down the most offbeat and interesting hip-hop lineup I’ve seen around here for a while. The range of South Bay artists will leave your head spinning: Steely Nash can sing straight-up blues like nobody as young as she is has to right to do, but with the backing of Audio Dru, she puts an electro-hop spin on R&B. Medik & Westwood from Language Arts Crew will also perform, along with one of the South Bay’s most promising turntablists, DJ Ichy, and the fascinating and talented femme rapper Vida Killz. The whole thing is hosted by our own celebrity battle rapper Dirtbag Dan, making the whole thing must-see stuff. (SP)

CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER Rashida Jones of TVâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Parks and Recreation stars in and co-wrote Celeste and Jesse Forever. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a strange kind of romcom: the female side of the audience gets it in the neck. It takes a while to realize that Jonesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Celeste is meant to be

a rather awful person. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the superior type who likes to ďŹ&#x201A;aunt her education. Celeste is a trend-spotter for a marketing company, but she semiconceals her failed social life by hanging on to her not-yet divorced husband Jesse (Andy Samberg). Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an overgrown boy who still lives on her property, in the art studio out back. The ďŹ lm aims to be comic, but the script isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t very funny, despite all the put-downs. It takes the Albert Brooks approach of a romance of difďŹ cult, self-absorbed neurotic people. But itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not self-aware despite its self-consciousness. (Opens Fri at Camera 7 in Campbell.) (RvB)

HARA-KIRI: DEATH OF A SAMURAI (NR; 126 min.) In the 1600s, a masterless samurai (played by the one-named actor Eita) arrives in the court of a great lordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s compound, requesting the honor to commit suicide in his yard. Since this is a trick used by beggars to wheedle money, it is decided to make the soldier go through with it. A story of honor, blood, revenge and a pair of wooden

swords, it is a remake of Masaki Kobayshiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s black-and-white 1962 masterpiece, Harakiri, which was a little more realistic and pessimistic (and is a must-see on DVD). This 3-D ďŹ lm, playing ďŹ&#x201A;at in the valley, is closer in line with director Takashi Miikeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s peculiar obsession with violence.

Yet thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no other director around who is more alive to the implicit horror of the bushido code, nor who is as able carry out such a story in such romantically dark interiors, with the glow of a white cat or a monogrammed lantern as the spot of light in the medieval darkness.

Identity Festival WITH ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC still emerging as a genre, Skrillex’s set at Outside Lands last weekend was probably the best free publicity the Identity Festival could ask for going Shoreline into its return to Shoreline Friday. When the ID Fest Amphitheatre came around last year, EDM was mostly still a club phenomenon, at least in the South Bay. But since then, Fri, Aug. 17 there’s been a lot of epic raving to go around, from Bassnectar’s San Jose show to the I Love This City festival 2pm; $60 to Skrillex’s Golden Gate debut.

This year’s headliner is Eric Prydz, who I think can be largely credited (or blamed, depending on your point of view) for kickstarting the ‘80s revival, which started bubbling up not long after his 2004 song “Call on Me,” which took the title line (and vocal sample) from Steve Winwood’s mid-80s megahit “Valerie,” drenched it in electro riffs, and stuffed it into the most laughably hypersexual (and yet, still totally hot) music video ever set in a gym.

The Shoreline stop also features Le Castle Vania, who has become a South Bay fave after regular club stops here, and Doctor P (the only DJ who also played I Love This City), as well as Excision, Paul Van Dyk, Hardwell, Bingo Players, Showtek, Noisia, Adrian Lux, Eva Simons, Audrey Napoleon, The Eye and more.—Steve Palopoli
