Rhapsodies Free Enterprise Triumph, disaster and crisis

t’s time to recognize the current economic condition for what it is: the Bush Depression.

Naming the depression after Bush may be a little unfair, because he was not responsible for instituting all the policies that began with Ronald Reagan. But he did oversee the triumph of Republican policies, which along with assistance from procorporate Democrats and bipartisan corruption, led to the depression: low taxes, less regulation, a relentless push for the globalization of finance, loose money policies, shipping manufacturing to China and blind faith in “the market” and “free enterprise.”

And then there’s the oil- and gas-industry-based Koch brothers.

The Kochs and corporations pour money into think tanks, policy groups, universities, publications and right-wing religious cults to promote their free-enterprise agenda. Their money spent on shaping the public debate and public policy doesn’t include the $30.1 billion over the past 10 years that corporations spent to lobby Congress. Additionally, the upcoming 2012 elections will run over $8 billion, mostly donated by corporations.

Corporations are sitting on $2 trillion in cash that they can’t invest because they can’t sell their products; people who borrowed too much and overleveraged during the Bush years simply don’t have any money.

People are angry. The rich doubled their share of national income over the past 30 years, and the top 1 percent now own 83 percent of all U.S. stocks. The number of poor people is at a 15-year high, and the middle class is shrinking. Some 61 percent of Americans live from paycheck to paycheck, and the bottom 50 percent of income earners own less than 1 percent of the country’s wealth.

Republicans oppose every Obama policy, downplay the central role they played in creating the depression and pursue the same policies that created the downturn: low taxes and no regulation.

Economic uncertainty and hate-mongering politicians contribute to an atmosphere of fear. Others claim that empires fall when the disparity between the rich and poor grows to the extent it has in the United States today. Can violence be far behind?

Construction Time Again This last week, a lively rally to support the SMART train and bike pathway drew over a hundred folks at the San Rafael city hall. We were there to celebrate the sale of nearly $200 million in bonds that will permit construction to begin early next year, creating over 900 jobs.

The train has now left the station. For more than two decades, the transit community has been working with local government to create a multi-modal, integrated transit system for the North Bay. The challenge of the 21st century will be to rationalize and regionalize our basic life-support systems: land, water, energy resources sustaining ecosystems, housing and transportation. SMART is the natural next step in building the transportation infrastructure for a sustainable future in the North Bay region.

All around us we can see the effects and consequences of the Great Recession. It is not a surprise that the rollout of SMART has been delayed by the Wall Street crisis. The new SMART general manager, the estimable Farhad Mansourian, has pledged publicly that he will deliver this project in full. We will get the whole train line and the regional trail with it.

The SMART rail and trail is a classic example of a good long-term investment that will generate jobs and economic activity now, and will yield substantial benefits for generations to come. This is the exactly the kind of infrastructure investment that we need to get America back to work building for future generations.

Bad Meat Year Twenty-eleven has not been a good year for the meat industry. In May, the World Cancer Research Fund advised limiting meat consumption to reduce the risk of bowel cancer. In August, salmonella contamination forced the world’s largest meat processor Cargill to recall 36 million pounds of ground turkey.

Then there were cruelty exposés. In March, an undercover investigation of the E6 Cattle Company in Texas showed workers bashing cows’ heads with pickaxes and hammers. In November, ABC News publicized atrocious conditions at Iowa’s Sparboe Farms.

Every one of us can resolve to cut our meat consumption in 2012. Entering “live vegan” in our favorite search engine brings tons of useful information.

the headwaters to major river systems that supply California with our precious water. The Petaluma “river system” is as fragile, if not more so, because it is actually not a “river” at all. It is a tidal slough that does not have a river flow to protect it from the damage and destruction the impact of development brings.

In these times when water resource management / sustainability and wetlands habitat preservation is critical to the future of our community and beyond, it is imperative that we find sane, sustainable and responsible solutions to the issues of development along and among these fragile habitats.

Our “tax dollars” should be used wisely and conscientiously in ways that benefit our community today and for generations to come.

Can California’s government ever be repaired?

alifornia started this year off with a blast, as the state’s so-called trigger cuts went into effect Jan. 1.

School budgets face the biggest challenges. The CSU and UC systems will shoulder cuts of

$100 million each—on top of a combined $650 million from last year—and K–12 students could see a shorter school year as per-pupil spending falls $13. Cuts to schools and social programs could go even deeper yet in the next fiscal year.

Gov. Jerry Brown will present his new budget proposal on Jan. 10.

Brown still has a $13 billion budget gap to cover next year.

“We’ll have an opportunity in November for the people to vote additional revenue, almost $7 billion, or not,” Brown said at a recent press conference. “If they vote the revenue, then our taxes will be extended for a few years; if

they don’t, we’ll have even bigger cuts.”

Brown’s proposal is one of a half dozen that aim to raise revenues for the state by taxing the wealthy, taxing oil companies or changing the property tax. If Brown’s initiative is passed by voters, sales tax would be raised by a half cent; individuals making more than $250,000 a year would see a 1 percent income tax hike; those making over $300,000 would pay another half percent; and people making over $500,000 would see their income taxes rise to 11.3 percent.

Kris Vosburgh, executive director of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, points out that any tax initiative could be a hard sell right now.

“There really isn’t a desire for higher taxes,” Vosburgh said. “We are one of the highest tax states, and we have the second highest unemployment.”

New taxes might patch a budget gap, but they don’t get at the heart of California’s problems. Brown’s taxes would expire in 2017, and state legislators would continue to work on the budget with limited flexibility—think education spending minimums passed by voters and court-mandated prison overhaul.

One of the more interesting proposals has come from the bipartisan Think Long Committee, a group of California political veterans including former governors Gray Davis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Silicon Valley magnates like Google’s Eric Schmidt, and Condoleezza Rice. Their manifesto has been a year in the making, bankrolled by billionaire Nicolas Berggruen, who’s promised to personally fund an initiative to the tune of $20 million.

In a report called “The Blueprint to Renew California,” the committee suggests initiative reform, education reform and, especially, tax reform.

The group also hopes to facilitate qualification for ballot measures by lowering the number of required signatures and allowing for electronic signatures. In short, the 23page document has something for every interest group to love and hate.

The plan promises to raise $10 billion a year in additional revenue while cutting income taxes across the board. Schools

Critics have been quick to note that despite the income tax cuts, the proposed sales tax amounts to a higher tax on the poor and an overall lower rate for the rich.

Because it eschews short-term ďŹ xes, the plan bears a striking resemblance to Repair Californiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recently proposed constitutional convention, and, indeed, Think Long and Repair California share many of the same players.

Jeffrey Lustig, retired Sacramento State professor and author of Remaking California, says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The problem with Think Long and others like them, for me, is that theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not addressing the fundamental crisis of the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s politics, which for me is the crisis of representation.â&#x20AC;?

In his book, Lustig points out that only 30 percent of California voters go to the polls, where decisions that affect funding and spending are made. This is the peculiar paradox surrounding the Think Long process, where a group of unelected political insiders- and billionaires write propositions and the voters make them law, completely circumventing the elected Legislature. Voters will decide this fall whether to tax or cut services, but behind the initiative process lies what is perhaps the real question: why canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the Legislature do this?

ust in time for the new year, I received an email blast asking whether I was tired of toxic products. Sent from a â&#x20AC;&#x153;greenâ&#x20AC;? nonproďŹ t, the message described various battles with cleaningproducts manufacturers.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m glad people are battling toxin hustlers, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d rather ask, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t you tired of letting someone else make your glass cleaner for you?â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to make cleaning products, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an expression of love. Think back on the movie Like Water for Chocolate. It focused on passionate cooking to show how fantastically work and food are transformed by inspired and loving determination. But what about mundane chores that donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t result in mole sauce or lovemaking? Washing windows,

for example, is hardly the prelude to a kiss. Some may fear passionate housekeeping leads to rejection. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Being perceived as excessively domestic can get you ostracized,â&#x20AC;? claims Cheryl Mendelson in her 1999 tome Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House. Mendelson, an attorney, says she wrote her treatise in secret, for fear of ridicule. But the massive, 884-page reference book is a labor of love showing how one can clean house without ďŹ ling lawsuits against makers of toxic products. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can make a good window cleaner yourself,â&#x20AC;? explains Mendelson on page 442, using â&#x20AC;&#x153;45 percent water, 45 percent rubbing alcohol and 10 percent ammonia.â&#x20AC;?

Label the spray bottle you put it in, because there is no blue dye in the mix. And use a new, clean bottle so you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mix chemicals.

About.com gives a simpler recipe, calling for one cup of rubbing alcohol, one cup of water and one tablespoon of vinegar.

And Care2.com says to use onehalf teaspoon of liquid detergent, three tablespoons of vinegar and two cups of water, claiming that this homemade cleaner will cut the â&#x20AC;&#x153;wax residue from commercial brands you might have used in the past.â&#x20AC;?

Whether or not any of these home recipes cleans up residues from commercial brands, using your own concoction for cleaning does something radical on a number of fronts: it puts you in charge of whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in your cleaning agents, and what touches your skin and lungs; it saves money; and it restores an almost lost artâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the transformation of a home, by inspired and loving determination.

Whatever recipe works for you, making your own cleaners is liberating and sustainable. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also an act of passionate housekeeping that boots corporate inďŹ&#x201A;uence out of your home. Clean your windows with vinegar and sincerity. Maybe thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no romantic payoffâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;but then again, you never know.

Liberty for All? Sam Adams and the hijacking of ‘craft beer’

or years, the largest amount of beer that any company in America could produce in a year and still market as “craft” beer was 2 million barrels.

Then, in the last days of 2010, the Brewers Association, an industry group based in Boulder, Colo., officially tripled that limit to allow breweries to generate as many as 6 million barrels of beer annually and still be considered

“craft,” a term which may connote a down-home, mom-and-pop, hands-in-the-hop-kiln image that brewers know can generate sales.

Not all in the beer industry are happy with the decision, which appears to be a move customtailored to accommodate one brewery, the Boston Beer Company, a growing giant behind the Sam Adams brand, which reported itself on a trajectory to surpass the 2 million barrel mark sometime in 2012.

“The last thing Sam Adams

wanted was not to be seen as ‘craft’ anymore,” says Tony Magee, president and founder of Lagunitas Brewing Company, whose facility in Petaluma brewed 165,000 barrels of beer in 2011. “But at some point, they need to cherish their growth and their breakaway from the craft category, and accept that they’re a big regional brewery.”

But size doesn’t matter to Jim Koch, president of Boston Beer. In 2010, he told the New York Times, “If we’re not a craft brewer, what

else are we? We’re certainly not Budweiser.”

That’s true, though much of Boston Beer’s product has been contract-brewed by Miller, and for Magee, that’s enough to significantly differentiate Sam Adams from the little people.

“Boston Beer is depending on the authenticity of all the little breweries, so that people can visit brewpubs and see the beer being made, then buy Sam Adams later when they’re thinking about craft beer,” Magee says.

Brendan Moylan, a managing owner of Moylan’s and Marin brewing companies, recognizes the value of the word “craft,” an exploding category that now includes about 1,700 pint-sized beer companies across the nation.

“If you’re successful, you grow, and at some point you can’t claim to be ‘small’ anymore, and the next best word is ‘craft,’” says Moylan, whose two brewpubs produce almost 7,000 barrels of beer per year.

Maintaining craft status was important enough to Koch that he pleaded with politicians in 2010 to adjust federal law, but while Sen. John Kerry began drafting language that would bump the ceiling to 6 million barrels, the Brewers Association independently conceded to raise its own roof.

Moylan thinks that Sam Adams has “manipulated the system to look small.”

“The Brewers Association just changed the rules,” he says, “so the big guys could stay in the club.”

The pending Senate bill that would give a tax break to all breweries of less than a 6-millionbarrel production now includes proposed tax breaks for many smaller craft breweries as well, and Magee feels that the Boston Beer Company, in requesting an easement on its own financial dues, has dragged hundreds of smaller companies into its own unsavory fiscal business.

“I’m horrified to be painted with the same brush as them,” Magee says. “There are people out there who can’t find any jobs, and now I’m one of these guys asking for a federal tax break. I don’t need a tax break.”

I

f this little winery seems to buck the trends of today, consider this: there might have never been a day when Napa Valley wasn’t ruled by trends. In the 1940s, one of the most popular grapes was Riesling.

Chardonnay was experimental. Fred and Eleanor McCrea bought their property in 1943, high above the east side of the valley on a narrow road that winds through oak woodland.

Consummate urbanites, they stayed in San Francisco much of the time, and built their house in 1957. Advisers from UC Davis told them, “Under no circumstances plant Chardonnay.” So they planted Chardonnay.

Among a dozen or so wineries in the valley at the time, Stony Hill is mentioned several times in a recent book about the early days of the wine boom, David Darlington’s An Ideal Wine. Then-budding winemaker John Kongsgaard remembers his epiphany during a visit with Fred McCrea: “Elbow propped on his fireplace mantel, holding a glass of Chardonnay while listening to Parsifal, the younger man said to himself, ‘I want this guy’s life!’”

Today, Peter and Willinda McCrea continue the family business, with winemaker Mike Chelini, who lives just down the road and has held that job since 1971. The tiny cellar holds barrels that look like they’ve had a similar stay, although a barrel sample of the 2011 Chardonnay shows a youthful verve of lychee and grapefruit, and a searing acidity that won’t be tamed soon—the house style forbids malolactic fermentation, and aims for the angular style of Chablis that Fred McCrea held dear.

Tastings are held in a capacious, flagstone-studded, Eisenhower-era (or Madmen-era, for our readers from TV Land) living room. The 2009 Stony Hill Chardonnay ($42) has floral and vintage sparkling aromas, lychee flavor and a crisp finish; the 2010 White Riesling ($27) has subtle, powdered sugar, pear cotlet aromas, and is said to gain complexity with age. Some of the original vines planted in 1948 survive, and it’s labeled “White” Riesling because that once distinguished it from Gray Riesling, a more productive grape that filled untold gallons of “Rhine Wine.”

The 2010 Gewürztraminer ($24) has spicy aromas of jasmine, pineapple and finishes absolutely dry; the 2009 Semillon de Soleil ($30) was dried on prune trays to concentrate the sugar, but is rather restrained for a dessert wine, with light, honeyed apricot flavor, like a well-made mead. For red wine drinkers, there’s a red blend and a nice Syrah from a half-acre in front of the house, too—if just to buck the trend.

o let’s get this straight: there’s some ancient calendar written a bajillion years ago, and it ends on Dec. 21, 2012, and that’s supposed to mean that the end of the world is nigh? Hell, if you’ll believe that, I’ve got a guy you should meet named Harold Camping.

Though most of us know that the supposed 2012 Mayan apocalypse is basically the Y2K scare all over again, that hasn’t kept us from languidly pondering how we’d spend our final days. So we here at the Bohemian handed the idea to the community, and asked various public figures the same question: “Since Mayan prophecy says that 2012 marks the end of the world, how do you plan to spend your last year on Earth?”

Paige Picard and Carl Patrick, Occupy Santa Rosa First off, we would like to thank Time for naming “the Protester” as its “2011 Person of the Year.”

However, in 2012 we hope to accomplish what no other Person of the Year has yet to attain: the coveted “Person of the Last Year Ever!” It won’t be easy, but here’s our plan: We are going to team up with People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” Bradley Cooper (though we stress that we are outraged that Ryan Gosling got snubbed. I mean, c’mon!), and together we are going to combat the twin evils of Wall Street: corporate greed and systematic unsexiness.

We will finally “get a job.” Our opponents have long advised us of the merits of employment, and in 2012 we will heed their wisdom and for once become equal contributors to society. We would have done this sooner, but there is a little-known provision in the Secret Activist Code that prohibits holding a job, or showering.

We regret that the Occupy movement single-handedly led to an epidemic in homelessness,

rampant drug addiction, untreated mental illness and violent crime in urban city centers. We will try our best to take things back to the way they used to be, when everyone had a home, no one did drugs, everyone was happy and no one ever broke the law.

We agree that the Occupy movement needs to have a more clear and concise message. To sum it up, basically we want an end to bad things and all that stuff, and we want the government to do only good things, like make justice and freedom. Also we want free ice cream now!

We firmly believe that there is no such thing as bad press; therefore, we urge the Occupy movement to continue smoking weed in public, organizing 24-hour drum circles, crapping on police vehicles and killing small business.

We think the Occupy movement needs to take a less confrontational approach in order to win over the masses. For example, sitting down and doing nothing (like UC Davis students), taking the day off of work (like the Oakland general strike) and sleeping in a tent (like Occupy in every city) are just too militant for most mainstream Americans. We think a much more effective strategy would be for everyone to put all their passion and energy into re-electing Barack Obama in 2012. We’ve heard that worked really well last time.

And if all these things fail, then our last-ditch option is to spend our last year on Earth engaging in a serious campaign of organizing our neighborhoods, campuses and workplaces against the domination of the 1%, and to create a new society based on equality and direct democracy for future generations.

Just kidding! That would be a total waste of time.

Should Mad Max–type, preapocalyptic bands of warriors come to roam our Sonoma countryside prior to the endtimes, my associates and I at Bike Monkey will finally get the chance to put on our yet-to-be-revealed cycling event: the Bike Biathlon. Except instead of .22s on a rifle range, it’ll be a bit more, you know, “real-time.”

And lest this all come off as too pointless, let’s all remember the best byproduct from a decent party: an

appreciation of the relative peace that comes with being alone for a moment. By the time I’ve thrown myself out of that El Camino as it hurtles off Stewart’s Point, drank too much, eaten too much and indulged in every stupid impulse I’ve never had the guts to pull off, I hope I can look at the world-ending abyss, take a last deep breath, and carve a toothy grin as it swallows me and the rest of creation whole.

I would also truly hope Newt Gingrich will win the White House in November, so I can finally prove to my father-in-law that I was right about the world ending if we elected a Republican again.

Whether the calendar is fictive or real, half-done or complete, the Mayans probably knew the same thing as I: living every day as your last day is the only way to live your days at all.

I approached him and asked “What you listening to, man? Sounds crazy.” He kept bobbing his head, white

buglike glasses reflecting the summer sun, and replied, “It’s the Karate Kid soundtrack played backwards. If you listen to it over and over it actually reverses time.”

He explained that he had been on this program for over a year and was actually getting younger.

He then pulled up his shirt exposing an abnormally muscular abdomen that resembled one of those plastic muscle suits you buy at a gag store. I said, “Damn!” The strange man replied, “This is what people are most impressed with.

Before I started listening to the Karate Kid soundtrack backwards this was all flab.”

So I started thinking to myself, if this could be true, and one could actually reverse time using the reverse Karate Kid soundtrack method, then what better time to use it than now? We could actually turn back the clock and save humanity.

There’ll be big, puffy pillows on the floor, paintings on the wall by Bob Hudson, Bill Allen, Bill Wiley, newly cut irises from the garden, sunlight at midday and shadows at dawn and dusk. No more of the shopping, cooking, washing, drying and dusting that I’ve done since I was a boy with chores all day long.

After an espresso and a croissant in the morning, I’ll sit at my desk and work until late afternoon on my last book—on Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain—racing against the clock for real this time.

In 2009, the local music community was shocked at the news that the great musician Johnny Downer died unexpectedly while vacationing in Mexico. To many, it still doesn’t seem real. Every year since, there has been a Johnny Downer Tribute at Hopmonk Tavern, where Downer performed

often, either with his band Free Peoples or with any configuration of other musicians.

In his memory, his mother has set up a fund benefiting music in Sebastopol schools, and previous benefits have helped carry on the thing Downer loved almost more than his fellow man—music. Keep his spirit alive on Saturday, Jan. 7, at Hopmonk Tavern.

Little Things A few weeks ago in the pages of this paper, our own Rachel Dovey spotlighted Tom Cooper, a man fascinated with chronicling in book form the tankhouses of Sonoma County. We are enamored of those with idiosyncratic relationships to the minute details of their own terrain, and consequently we love Robert Sandberg and his single-focus book ‘Steps, Lanes and Paths of Mill Valley.’

Of course, these are no ordinary steps, lanes and paths; created around the turn of the century as shortcuts in town, they were abandoned with the advent of car travel, only to be unearthed and rebuilt in the 1990s. Funk Royalty When everyone from James Brown to Parliament to Prince to De La Soul wants you in their band, you know you’re doing something right. The great saxophonist Maceo Parker is synonymous with soul music. Say just the first name—“Maceo”—and everyone knows there’s gonna be a riot goin’ on. Parker is 68 but looks 40, and still blows his horn like a teenager. He also brings with him one of the meanest bands in the business, with Rodney “Skeet” Curtis as a secret weapon on bass. With a supper-club setting, it only makes sense that the recently reopened George’s Nightclub would host a jazz series. This year, that idea comes true with Jazz at George’s, happening every first and third Thursday of the month. Upcoming artists in the series include the versatile bassist Marcus Shelby and guitarist Ray Obiedo, while the opening honors are given to Roberta Donnay. A backup singer with Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, Donnay was mentored in recording jazz by the legendary producer Orin Keepnews, who helped nurture the careers of Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. euroscience has not been kind to the concept of free will. In recent years, the ďŹ eld has given us a picture of the conscious mind that isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t very ďŹ&#x201A;attering; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s often an underachiever compared to the unconscious mind, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also disturbingly willing to take credit for work it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do.

Neuroscience shows us a brain that is determined by its physical characteristics, a brain that can be

understood as a very complicated mechanism. Can a mechanism be said to have free will? And if there is no free will, what happens to the concept of personal responsibility? â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you go through a whole journey of 50 years in brain science, you start wondering about that,â&#x20AC;? author Michael S. Gazzaniga tells me in a recent phone interview. In his new book, Whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in Charge? Free Will and the Science of the Brain, he explores these questions in depth.

Gazzaniga has been involved in studies that clash dramatically with instinctive notions about how

our minds work. He once worked with people whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d had such severe epilepsy that the only solution was a surgery to sever the connections between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. The curious thing about this surgery is that patients did not notice any difference, and never reported anything unusual.

Gazzaniga tested these patients by feeding different information to the two hemispheres, and the results are fascinating. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really a multi-agent system in there,â&#x20AC;? he explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bazillion control systems in there running our lives. And which one

is sort of in our conscious mind at any moment is the result of a competition that goes on with these agents.â&#x20AC;?

But when the hemispheres are severed, the agents on one side canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t share information with the agents on the other side. The left hemisphere handles language, so initially, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the side that answers questions. And when asked, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happy to explain and take responsibility for actions initiated by the right hemisphere in response to information not at all available to the left.

How? It just makes something up and believes that it is true.

This is due to a part of the brain called the interpreter, and though it may seem a little dishonest, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just doing its job. The interpreter is what gives you your personal narrative, and sometimes, as Gazzanigaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experiments show, it is wildly incorrect about whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening in the brain.

Other experiments have shown that often the interpreter will give the conscious mind credit for decisions and actions that actually originated in the unconscious mind.

This has given some reason to think that consciousness might be nothing more than an afterthe-fact explainer, a device to rationalize and take credit. But late in the book, Gazzaniga sticks up for conscious decision-making, will power and restraint. These things do exist, he shows us, and he describes their importance in how the mind operates.

So does this mean he believes in free will? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The idea of free will seems antiquated and out-of-date,â&#x20AC;? he says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;and not very helpful to understanding what we humans are all about.â&#x20AC;?

‘Tomfoolery’ riotous fun at Cinnabar

o people still listen to records together?

There was a time, back in the vinyl days, when you would put on a new record and everyone would sit on the couch or the floor and just listen. Together.

And if it was a record by Tom Lehrer, everybody listening would also end up laughing their butts off.

Tomfoolery, the peppy new musical revue at Petaluma’s Cinnabar Theater, is the theatrical equivalent of hanging out and taking in the hilarious songwriting brilliance of a Tom Lehrer box set.

Directed by Michael Fontaine, who also performs in the show, and with crisp musical direction by Stuart Rabinowitsh, Tomfoolery is a plotless but cleverly written

celebration of the man who gave us the scandalous “Poisoning Pigeons in the Park,” “The Vatican Rag,” “We Will All Go Together When We Go” and other subversive, twisted tunes. Early on, following a show-opening, four-person romp through the naughty Boy Scout anthem “Be Prepared,” Fontaine sets the tone with a lithe performance of “The Elements,” a clever recitation of the entire periodic table of the elements sung to the tune of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Modern Major General.”

Other highlights include Eric Morris’ sweet crooning of the gory dismemberment-themed love song “I Hold Your Hand in Mine” and the equally whackedout “My Home Town”; Krista Wigle’s impressive belting of the politically incorrect “Wiener Schnitzel Waltz”; and Elly Lichenstein’s side-splittingly straight-faced rendition of “The Irish Ballad,” nailing the song’s nonchalant sense of murderous glee:“About Sinéad I’ll sing a song / Who didn’t have her family long / Not only did she do them wrong / She did ev’ryone of them in.”

The big crowd pleaser, not surprisingly, is the entire foursome’s spirited song-anddance performance of the aforementioned “Vatican Rag,” performed, appropriately enough, in Catholic nun drag. The spoken song-linking material drops sly snippets of detail about Lehrer’s life and career, with the occasional cynical quote from the man himself. Fontaine fills the stage (a nicely designed set by Sharlyn Klein, recalling Laugh-In) with visual flash and simple but entertaining choreography.

Though a few favorites are not included (what, no “Hunting Song”?), there is plenty to tickle the taste of longtime Lehrer fans.

For those heretofore unexposed to Lehrer, the wickedly inappropriate charm of lyrics and the palpable joy of the bemused cast will undoubtedly make many converts.

Lars von Trier’s ‘Melancholia’ is one of the most proper apocalypse films to be released in years, since at the thrilling end (and I’m really not spoiling anything here) the planet is completely obliterated, with no person or beast spared the pathos of perfect destruction.

grappling with the truth that a newly discovered planet is on a collision course with the earth.

Filmed in dense greens and grays, this is the ultimate end-of-theworld drama; there’s nowhere to run, and humankind has only flimsy bodies and souls for shields against the last fiery blast.

It’s fair to say that ‘2012,’ which posits that the earth’s core is heating and causing the continents to sink, pretty much sucked. But the fact that it cast John Cusack as an action hero who saves his children from moltenlava death by driving a series of limos, vans and Russian military jets really, really fast makes this movie worth its weight in stale $3 movie-theater popcorn. In the end, there’s nothing left but water, water everywhere and one “ark” slowly floating toward the Drakensberg Mountains.

For those who yearn for an apocalypse with a Biblical tinge, look no further than ‘The Rapture.’

In this 1991 sleeper, Mimi Rogers plays a swinger who embraces born-again Christianity after she hears the ominous sounds of the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse clop-clop-clopping toward the earth. When her husband is murdered, she loses her faith and shoots her daughter in the desert, and only then does God take the show on the road by smiting down humanity in a hail of white light and brimstone. Sinners in the hands of an angry god, indeed.

Truthfully, most apocalypse films should be labeled “postapocalyptic.” Just look at ‘The Road’ and ‘Tank Girl.’ The earth never gets completely destroyed, although water and sunshine do become mighty scarce. Or how about ‘Night of the Comet,’ the 1984 flick about two Valley Girls left to fend for themselves after a comet turns pretty much everyone else into dust or zombies? This leads to one of the best shopping-frenzy montages ever committed to celluloid, set, naturally, to “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Hell, if the world’s going to end, you might as well wear a cute fedora to the going-away party.

H

abits of secrecy and arrogance breed monstrous behavior in the stunning new version of John le Carré’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The story unfolds in the early 1970s. The Cold War still has England frozen. The Secret Service is the most paranoid place in this war, and its denizens face news that a toplevel mole is pipelining secrets to the U.S.S.R. Director Tomas Alfredson (of the original Let the Right One In) creates a thick impasto of early-1970s British despair. His spies are men dripping in athletic-club shower rooms or swimming in a crowded pond of cold water. Such is the world of George Smiley (Gary Oldman), the man once next in line for control of the British Secret Service until he and his boss (John Hurt) were forced to resign after a particularly bad fiasco in Budapest; there, British agent Jim Prideaux (Mark Strong) was shot in the back by the KGB. The mole suspects include one of the most baleful actors alive, Ciarán Hinds, as Roy Bland; Colin Firth as an icon of condescension; Toby Jones; David Dencik as a downy Toby Esterhase, last seen wailing for his life; and Benedict Cumberbatch as the too-natty Peter Guillam. And out in the cold: the ominous Tom Hardy as polyesterswathed leg breaker Ricki Tarr.

The director keeps the deepest cause of Smiley’s solitude offcamera, his straying wife, Ann. Oldman is startling here, even after years of superb supporting work. The sordid job of spying excites him internally—he has a fetishist’s gleam—and his performance is dark and vivid, even if it’s superficially quiet. His Smiley (naturally not a smiler) is a man who radiates authority, even while fulfilling le Carré’s description of someone who makes a room emptier every time he enters.

California Gold Tim and Nicki Bluhm’s hazy, vintage-sounding duets In 1966, a young author was leaving a party in Carmel Village. At an S-turn the motorcycle he was riding on lost control, and the author was killed instantly. His book, Been Down So Long it Looks Like up to Me, had been out for only two days.

In fact, the author, named Richard Fariña, was better known for his music. With his wife, Mimi, he recorded politically laden folk music, and the two even presaged Dylan’s electric revolution with a track recorded on electric guitar, “Reno, Nevada.”

Tim and Nicki Bluhm are a husbandand-wife duo living not far from the site of Fariña’s accident, who 45 years later have included “Reno, Nevada” on their recent EP, Duets. Most all of the songs are originals which outshine the Fariña-penned track.

Conjuring breezy days spent in the West Coast outdoors, the duo’s voices blend perfectly in songs about love, life and memories. “Unforgetaboutable” is like a lost George Jones and Melba Montgomery B-side, and “Think About the Two of Us” has a tinge of classic-country sweetness.

Tim Bluhm is known for his work with the Mother Hips, but Duets captures his unique vision of a freer 1970s California. Catch the two opening for Victoria George on Saturday, Jan. 7, at 142 Throckmorton Theatre.

D

espite its title, Thundercat’s Golden Age of Apocalypse hardly evokes nuclear fallout or drifting ash. In his 2011 debut, L.A. jazz bassist Stephen Bruner (Thundercat) envisions a post-doomsday utopia, like the mythical golden age he references, full of falsetto harmonies and orchestral swells.

The album’s fantasy-rich futurism isn’t surprising, considering it was helmed by Bruner’s L.A. cohort Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison, and released on the producer’s Brainfeeder label. A 28-year-old with a reported fondness for astral travel and marijuana-laced goldfish crackers, Ellison released his own trippy breakthrough Cosmogramma in 2010, which featured song titles like “Zodiac Shit” and folded harp solos, sampled hospital machines and Thom Yorke into its freewheeling mix.

Lotus-inspired quirks abound on

Apocalypse. Syncopated blips and bells texture an otherwise simple melody on “Daylight.” Scattered handclaps confuse the rhythm of “Boat Cruise.” “Mystery Machine (The Golden Age)” is little more than a looped chord amid a dense fog of feedback.

But where Ellison dabbles in sonic chaos, Bruner shapes his combo of bass, keys and drums into something strongly resembling form. Aside from their mystical flourishes, “Boat Cruise” and “Daylight” both circle a handful of repetitive phrases. A brisk rhythm guides “Fleer Ultra” through riotous bass improvisation. “Walkin’” is a neo-funk breeze-along anchored by a steady beat that breaks into a peppy chorus of la-la’s.

If you know your end-of-theworld lore, you’ll realize that Cosmogramma is the natural prequel to Apocalypse’s postdisaster arcadia. Violent and extravagant, Ellison’s album is the doomsday Bruner glances back at, from its Dante-esque title—an arcane word about the study of heaven and hell—to the music itself, a blast of voices, lasers and drums that scatter like shards of shrapnel.

Ellison’s heady outbursts are likely glorious live. But blaring from a plastic disc (or, let’s be honest, a 13-inch screen), the compositions border on grandiose.

They’re interesting, jarring and even at times moving. But between the artist’s dense philosophizing and musical iconoclasm, one gets the feeling he wants to transport listeners to the postworld plane that obsesses him—and sheer noise, however complex, simply won’t do the trick (although another goldfish might).

But where Cosmogramma gets lost in some timeless future-place, Apocalypse exists partly in the present, where people buy groceries and where time signatures mean something. With his many nods to funk, jazz fusion and good old-fashioned beats, Bruner’s playing is grounded in the familiar, while Ellison’s layers allow listeners to glimpse, briefly, his imagined future. Like Cosmogramma, Thundercat’s Apocalypse doesn’t do away with time, but in quiet, scattered moments, it conjures the duo’s timeless golden age.
