LAYWRIGHT Lillian Hellman once said: “I cannot and will not cut my conscience to fit this year’s fashions.� The statement was in a letter to the House Un-American Activities Committee. The year was 1952. We tell ourselves that the McCarthy era was vastly different than our own—but what about the political fashions of 2010? This year’s fashions cut mean figures on Washington’s runways. Conformities lie, and people die. While the escalating disaster of war in Afghanistan keeps setting deadly blazes, the few anti-war voices on Capitol Hill usually sound like people whispering “Fire!� In 2010, this is what the warfare state looks like: a largely numbed state, mainlining anesthetics that induce routine torpor. In that context, the conformity of mild dissent is apt to be mistaken for outspoken moral acuity. On the back of an envelope, or anywhere else, check this math: $1,000,000 x 100,000 = $100,000,000,000. In round flat numbers, that’s the cost of deploying 100,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan for one year—$100 billion. The initial “cost� includes none of the human consequences. In a numbed process, filtered through media and political buzz phrases, we talk about one number, then another. Numb and number. For domestic acceptance, a far-off war depends on the pumped-up anesthetics of verbal abstractions and hollow numbers, permeating news media and political discourse. Wooden words and figures, bolted together; every number a lie when wrenched into claiming to tell a human truth. The number we get, the farther from warfare’s human consequences. While more lives are being shattered elsewhere, conscience hems and haws to fit this year’s fashions. When Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “Beyond Vietnam� speech on April 4, 1967, he told listeners that he had moved during the course of two years, finally, “to break the betrayal of my own silences and to speak from the burnings of my own heart.� At the podium of Riverside Church in New York City, he said: “I come to this magnificent house of worship tonight because my conscience leaves me no other choice.� Dr. King noted that the human spirit has “great difficulty� moving against “all the apathy of conformist thought within one’s own bosom and in the surrounding world.� In his own way, King was saying what Hellman had said 15 years earlier when she declared herself unwilling to “cut my conscience to fit this year’s fashions.� This year, with the escalating occupation of Afghanistan widely believed to be on automatic policy pilot, conscience is fashionably cloaked with acquiescence. Many in Congress who say they don’t support the war keep voting to fund it—and keep their voices muffled. The brandished wrath of the House Speaker or the White House chief of staff is most effective as a pre-emptive club. A dozen years after Hellman defied HUAC, a senator defied the fearful conformity of 1964. Seeing the escalation of the Vietnam War on the near horizon, Wayne Morse spoke truth to—and about—power. The contrast with today’s liberal baseline on Capitol Hill is painfully evident if you watch footage of Sen. Morse for two minutes.

A Salmon Season Without Salmon?

N April 15, the Pacific Fishery Management Council decided at its Portland meeting to extend the recreational salmon season, which opened April 3, until Sept. 6. The decision comes as an unpleasant surprise to many California fishermen, some of whom would prefer to see salmon fishing prohibited for at least the rest of the year following the poor return of spawning adults to the Sacramento River last fall. The council, a 14-member group comprised of selected recreational fishermen, commercial fishermen and government biologists, also voted to allow a limited 2010 commercial salmon season—about eight days in July. Some party boat skippers and commercial boat operators have said they disapprove of the decision to allow fishing this year but say they will fish reluctantly by client and customer demand.
“If they open the season, we have to go,� said Johnny Atkinson, who owns and operates New Rayann, a party boat based in Sausalito. “But I’d rather see the numbers return in the river. Even if there are 245,000 salmon out there like they’ve said, I’d rather see every one of those 245,000 salmon spawn.� Ed Zoliniak, an ex–party boat captain in Santa Cruz who “threw in the towel� just a week ago when he sold his vessel, also believes the council should not have reopened the fishing season. “I would have voted for another full closure,� he said. “There don’t appear to be a whole lot of fish out there. Last year they closed it after 66,000 fish spawned. This fall we got 39,000 and they opened the season. I don’t understand that.� —Alastair Bland

HE first ceremony begins at dark. The participants come into the octagon spiritual room in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. They sit in a circle and state their intentions about what they want out of the ceremony. The more specific the question they want answered, the better. The doses of ayahuasca are handed out in small cups. Everyone drinks it together, most wincing at the acrid taste that has been likened to “the entire jungle ground up and mixed with bile.� As soft tribal music plays in the background, everyone lies down. They focus their attention and wait. Ayahuasca is not the kind of psychedelic that one takes to go dancing at a party. A tea derived from two vines that grow in the Amazon jungle, this powerful psychoactive causes intense nausea in most people. It also catapults its users into an intense, introspective psychedelic experience that many feel is capable of curing addiction, anxiety and depression—or just healing past trauma. Lakshmi Narayan, a Santa Cruz businesswoman who was introduced to ayahuasca years ago in Peru, describes it as a “powerful but gentle� experience that helped her recover from the pain of her father’s death. “It was a wound I had no way of healing, it was so big and powerful,� she says. Over the last decade, ayahuasca has become a favorite among the psychedelic community. Also called yage, it is the very same plant that the beat writer William S. Burroughs sought out while corresponding with poet Allen Ginsberg in The Yage Letters. Since the 1990s, there has been an upswing in the establishment of neoshamanic retreats in Brazil, Peru and Ecuador. More and more Westerners are traveling to South America with the intent of undergoing these psychedelic experiences for personal growth and healing. Long used by natives in the Amazon basin for healing and divination, ayahuasca—the active ingredient of which is dimethyltryptamine (DMT)— can currently only be used in the United States by members of the União do Vegetal (UDV) and Santo Daime churches, both of which have won Supreme Court battles in the last three years. But a growing body of research is examining the use of ayahuasca and other psychedelic drugs for healing purposes. After decades of social marginalization and governmental suppression, a renaissance is going on in the world of psychedelic research. In 2010, there are as many research projects on mind-altering drugs going on as there were in the late 1960s, before the U.S. government started cracking down on them. Last week Deborah Quevedo, who has attended more than 50 ceremonies in South America, presented her own graduate-school research on ayahuasca at a conference hosted by the Santa Cruz–
based Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), a nonprofit committed to mainstreaming the medical use of psychedelic drugs. Called “Psychedelic Science in the 21st Century,� the San Jose conference was the biggest international psychedelic science gathering in almost two decades. Quevedo, who with her husband has worked for decades in the fields of holistic and alternative healing at O’Connor Hospital in San Jose, Stanford University Medical Center and UCSF Medical Center, says she’d heard reports about ayahuasca being effective in the treatment of addictions. The Quevedos made their first trip to a Brazilian ayahuasca retreat in 2001 to experience the drug themselves. “It was really life-changing for me,� she says. “I had never had any experience with any mind-altering substances before, so it was all new and very expansive. “I came home from that retreat when I was starting a Ph.D. I basically spent the next six years of my graduate school trying to figure out what had happened to me.� “I’m really glad people are recognizing what a tool it is for our own evolution,� says Narayan. “There’s something very feminine about ayahuasca. And that’s kind of what the world needs, is more feminine energy.�

And it may be that we need techniques to move us in that direction, and the use of psychoactive drugs clearly is one path that has helped many people.� Weil was a colleague of Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert at Harvard, where the three men rocked academia with their studies. At that time, LSD was legal, but that changed quickly. After a brief public debate about its potential merits, LSD was outlawed in 1966. Leary, who had by then become “the Psychedelic Messiah,� was not surprised by the development. “The effect of consciousness-expanding drugs will be to transform our concepts of human nature, of human potentialities, of existence,� Leary said. “These possibilities naturally threaten every branch of the establishment. The dangers of external change appear to frighten us less than the peril of internal change. LSD is more frightening than the Bomb!� Leary continued crusading for psychedelics, organizing events like the 1977 psychedelics conference at UC–Santa Cruz, the first to be held at a university. Allen Ginsberg, Ken Kesey and LSD pioneer Albert Hofmann attended. Having learned from the mistakes of the acidheads of that era, today’s psychedelic community might be better prepared to deal with some of the most powerful substances on earth, even as they discover further evidence of that power and try to harness it to cure persistent ills. There are promising studies under way around the world into the use of psilocybin for cancer patients, MDMA (ecstasy) for autism and Asperger’s syndrome, ibogaine for addiction and LSD-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of anxiety associated with terminal illness. Still, MAPS and the broader psychedelic community aren’t out of the woods yet. It took the researchers at MAPS five years of fighting and navigating the bureaucracy of the Drug Enforcement Agency and Food and Drug Administration to get their most recent, and influential, study under way. Michael Mithoefer’s 7-1/2-year, $2.2 million trial study into the use
of MDMA in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was the first legal pilot study of its kind in the United States in decades and has been widely hailed by the medical community as a breakthrough in psychedelic research. Despite the DEA putting up roadblocks at every turn, Mithoefer’s MAPS-funded research will be expanding this summer into the MDMA treatment of Iraq war veterans’ PTSD.

pissed off my friends. I didn’t like myself anymore, but it was easier to keep using heroin.� After he tried 12-step programs and methadone clinics, Hencken heard about ibogaine. While it has a long history of use in African spiritual rituals, there is also a large international underground movement of people using the drug to treat addiction. Desperate, Hencken made the trip down to Mexico City in 2001 to take capsules of the drug with a doctor (ibogaine is currently illegal in the United States). “It wasn’t a fun trip,� Hencken says. For more than 24 hours he experienced ataxia, rendering him unable to move as the substance’s psychoactive effects took hold, bringing with it visions from throughout his life. “I don’t think I had any epiphanies that day,� he says, “but it did stir up all these things I was suppressing about my childhood that were interrelated as to why I was a drug addict.� Hencken says he has been clean for nine years. Since then he has earned degrees from San Diego State University and is dedicated to spreading the word about alternative drugs. “Getting through something that is so mentally tough, I think gave me some strength,� he says. “It made me confident that if I could get through that, then I can stay away from using heroin.�

1=D3@ AB=@G j B63 >=E3@ B= 63/: acid, an amount that could fit onto the head of a pin, can launch a person into a full-blown psychedelic experience. “What we often hear from the media is that psychedelics will bring out your demons and make you go crazy,� Hencken says. “Or they’ll give you schizophrenia or you’ll jump off the roof—things that have only really happened to a very few people. I think the bulk of people, if they have these experiences and do them in the right setting, they’ll find them to be very beneficial to their lives.� As an organization, MAPS would like to see psychedelics accepted to the point that they can be administered safely. “I first did psychedelics when I was in high school, and I remember friends taking friends to go tripping
in a graveyard,� Hencken says. “That’s a terrible place to go tripping. You’re opening yourself up to a situation where you’re going to see dead people, and you’re going to freak out. A lot of people choose terrible places to do these drugs for the first time.� Hencken says that the bulk of the “bad trips� that people experience on psychedelics could be prevented if the drugs were regulated and the users were properly informed about how to conduct a safe trip. “Ideally, MAPS would like to see a situation in the near future where people who are interested in these drugs can get honest information. Where they can get unadulterated, clean, safe drugs, and they can do them with a guide that understands the power of these things.� 0

and the Beast) is sensibly trying to do a Wicked on the famous tale, complete with rivalry between witchy queens: the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) and the ghostly yet sugary White Queen (Anne Hathaway). The now 19-year-old Alice (Mia Wasikowska) is meant to quest for good in “Underland,� a place she misremembered as Wonderland. I’m a helpless Burton fan, but the colors here aren’t state of the art, and compared to Coraline’s solitude and thoughtfulness the finale turns out to be familiar dragon slaying; ultimately, it’s not just Alice who has been here before. A synthespian made completely out of Black Angus beef, Sam Worthington demonstrates his ability to suck every touch of humor in a movie, so that no matter how ridiculous things get no one laughs during his scenes. He passed on the risible coiffures endemic in director Louis Leterrier’s vision of the ancient world, the land of a thousand fright wigs. Hairiest of them all is Liam Neeson’s Zeus, in shiny tinfoil armor last seen in Excalibur—glittering 3-D eyesore like a f licker postcard. This glowing apparition stares down his evil brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes): nothing says “tension� like two furry, heavily mascaraed men giving each other the eye. Your kid will agree that any movie with Medusa in it can’t be a total loss. Her backstory is told by Perseus’ guardian angel Io (Gemma Arterton); Arterton provides not only the movie’s too-rare girlyaction, but Clash’s one nod to the pathos of Ovid. Stieg Larsson’s book is the hottest thing going in mysteries right now, and thankfully, director Niels Arden Oplev and screenwriters Nikolaj Arcel and Rasmus Heisterberg recognized that more important than any of the hype swirling around the book is the protagonist at its center, Lisbeth Salander. She is the girl with the dragon tattoo, and she’s maybe the best fictional character to come around yet this century. Swedish actress Noomi Rapace is absolutely incredible in her ability to bring Lisbeth to life. She is a force of nature, pure and simple. Lisbeth is hired to dig up dirt on Mikael (Michael Nyqvist) but ends up helping him investigate the disappearance many years ago of Harriet, heiress to a creepy, feuding family of millionaires. Though it may use the U.S. title, the movie doesn’t shy away from the book’s unrelenting critique of the violence that society allows men to perpetuate against women, and though the scenes with certain unsavory characters may have been cut down in number, they are still surprisingly graphic. Luckily, Lisbeth is womankind’s ultimate revenge fantasy come true—sooner or later, her boots are gonna walk all over absolutely everyone. (SP) 5@33<03@5 (R; 107 min.) Writer/director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) is back with another character
study. A dysfunctional, emotionally unbalanced fortysomething in full-on midlife crisis, Greenberg (Ben Stiller), to be blunt, is an asshole. He makes the nearly two hours we spend with him an unpleasant, disquieting experience, but Baumbach wouldn’t have it any other way. Roger Greenberg, a one-time musician down on his luck, arrives in Los Angeles from New York City after a six-week stay in a mental institution. He plans to house-sit for his more successful brother and his wife. He strikes up a halting, hesitant relationship with his brother’s personal assistant, Florence Marr (Greta Gerwig). min.) Sublime, but not dainty. Due to a wormhole, observed by a hot tub repairman or a Time Lord or something (Chevy Chase), three idiots (Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry and the ever soulful John Cusack) are transported back to their happier past at a ski resort in 1986. Accidentally transported with them is 24-year-old Jacob (the hilarious Clark Duke), a depressed middle-aged-man-intraining whose life may depend on the events of the night to come. Certainly the funniest and grimiest film since The Hangover, but Hot Tub Time Machine’s editing is ruthless, almost to the point of resembling a comingattractions reel. Rather than looking like a frenzied mess, however, it is more like there was some brilliant four-hour version that was cut down to a ragged but right shape. Director Steve Pink scripted High Fidelity; Cusack and Corddry do things here that you will still be laughing about 10 years from now: examples being Corddry’s violent unplugging of himself from a hospital bed or Cusack’s monologue about the day life went

A great idea, but it has no real twists or serious rage in it, and it strains to make the 90-minute mark. David Duchovny—as ever, wistful, moony and vaguely horny—is the father of a fake nuclear family dropped into an exclusive yet bland community. There, the only life that goes on takes place around the spa and the golf course. They stealthmarket products to the neighbors, and the locals are left to struggle to pay to “keep up with the “Joneses.� Cast against type, Gary Cole is the tragic sucker next door, married to a venal Mary K.–style saleswoman; she’s played by the muchmissed Glenn Headly, who does all the film’s comedic heavy lifting. The product placement director on The Joneses got a serious workout, too, so the cargostroking is nonstop even while the film seeks to criticize this epic
high-end consumerism. Another problem is Demi Moore, once a concrete kitten, now a polyethylene cougar. Watching the emotions inch across her beautifully toned and lifeless face, one wishes they could have reunited Duchovny with Gillian Anderson for a different sort of team-up. Director Derrick Borte makes this luxury community out of the richest parts of suburban Atlanta and Spokane; the pale light and depressing ostentation add to the general bad mood induced by this indie. Dave, a home-brewed costumed vigilante (Aaron Johnson), meets up with real professionals in the field: a Batman and Robin–esque father-anddaughter team (Nicolas Cage, and the excellent Chloe Moretz, who was the wise little girl in (500) Days of Summer). Entertaining in parts, but director Matthew Vaughn has no feeling for the romance and mystery and vigilante lore: the movie has a
nasty fan-boy quality, a hermetic focus that doesn’t see anything beyond the purpose of beating bad guys bloody. Cage carries the movie’s ambiguity deftly—he’s enough of a serious comic book reader that he knows it’s a dreadful thing when a father bends his child to revenge. Bloody-minded little girls (thank heaven for them) may like Moritz. It’s nuts to call Kick-Ass the next Watchmen. 80 min.) Short but ravishing Irish cartoon about their national treasure, the Book of Kells, an 1800-year-old illuminated manuscript. Young Brendan (voiced by Evan McGuire) is a monk at his uncle’s abbey at Kells in ninthcentury Meath. The merciless Viking raiders approach, but Brendan is more interested in the arrival of a fellow artist to the monastery:
the aged brother Aidan (Mick Lally), who carries with him the last treasure from his island of Iona: the book which later will be known as the Book of Kells. When Aidan sends the boy out into the wolf-haunted forest to seek pigments, the boy encounters a fairy named Aisling (Christen Mooney). What’s stressed here is art as the hope of civilization, representing something more than life.The love of nature also radiates from this movie; directors Tomm Moore, Nora Twomey and the rest of the artists at Cartoon Saloon have indeed made something that’s beautiful yet never airyfairy. His mom’s boyfriend of the day, Jerry (Zach Galifianakis), has to leave town suddenly. Jerry, Nick and the mom in question (Jean Smart) go vacationing at “Restless Axles,� a sad
trailer park by a lake. There, Nick meets a girl who is too good to be real: Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday), kept under lock and key by her parents. Nick is determined to get next to her at all costs—even if it means creating the identity of “François Dillinger,â€? a kind of Big Lots version of the breezy heel Belmondo played in Breathless. Small-scale mayhem follows in Francois’ wake. Based on a selfpublished novel by C.D. Payne, Youth in Revolt invokes numerous local sites, from Ukiah to Santa Cruz (though for budget reasons, the movie was shot in Louisiana and Michigan). The writing is so crisp that one ignores the incidents of dead air and the jokes that fail to build. Despite a nod to computers at the beginning, this is a film that carries out its scheme of rebel cool against a background of vinyl LPs, French New Wave references, pay telephones and a thinly veiled version of the book The Joy of Sex. She Walked! Jean called on an ad in the Santa Cruz Weekly. She described what she was looking for and we began the search. Jean was very entertaining and we had a lot of fun looking at properties- since she was in a low price range we saw some wild houses, mildew-y, smelly, fixtures missing, holes in floors, broken windows, illogical floor plans, the gamut. Through it all she maintained her courage and optimism. We made several offers that were lost to higher bidders. We made several offers that were not accepted. We made offers that she rejected after finding out most of the house was illegal. We made an offer then found out the house had been flooded a few months ago. Then it happened. The magical place appeared. Well, the yard was magical, the house marginal. Jean fell in love with the setting. We proceeded to loan stage. Papers were flying and signing and personal information was aired and recorded and pinned down. It was a bit after that that Jean started becoming rather apprehensive. Some might refer to it as the common complaint of “buyers remorse” or “cold feet” or “terrified”; whatever it was. it was serious. Jean started questioning and what if-ing everything. I could see the original enthusiasm ebbing rapidly. ’Til finally not a trace remained. A first time buyer, Jean found the arduous process too overwhelming. She blamed the loan rates which took a leap for a few days and the mortgage payments that would rise a little bit as an indication of her entire philosophy— “see what can happen, nothing is sure.” She backed out, she walked. She ran. She disappeared. I found myself angry and wondered why. It was not the commission lost, commissions come and go (rapidly I’ve found). It was not the time spent, that had been enjoyable. I thought and thought and realized that I was angry because she did not do what I thought she should: buy the house. The rates were still good, the property attractive, the offer accepted, and the reports ok. Everything was fine. But she did not perform the way I thought she should. I could not understand her reasoning. I did not agree with her reasoning. But it was hers, not mine. I needed to appreciate and understand her all encompassing fear. To try to relate and understand it as well as possible. We all have our fears: of homelessness, of poverty, of heights, of bees, of snakes, of closeness, of life, of death. To others they may make no sense, to us they control and we cling for dear life. It is only in reaching way out to walk that mile—in those other shoes—to put aside our prejudices and attitudes, beliefs and opinions that we can possibly, partially, maybe a little, leave behind our old baggage and pick up new suitcase full of better understanding.
