I Like Tigers and I Vote 0G AB3>63< 93AA:3@

NIMAL LOVERS were elated to learn that the Downtown Association has recently decided to ask the Santa Cruz City Council to lift the 1976 prohibition against dogs on Pacific Avenue. While I am not personally a dog lover or owner, I do like cats, especially big cats, and most specifically my pet tiger, Borges, who lives contentedly in my Westside backyard. For years I have wanted to bring Borges with me when I go shopping downtown but have been frustrated by the irrational ban on large carnivorous quadrupeds. Surely Santa Cruz dog owners, in their progressive wisdom, understand that all animals are created equal, and once the dog is out of the bag, so to speak, other creatures dear to the hearts of law-abiding Santa Cruzans must also be welcome to accompany their human companions, and in the process keep our town as weird as its bumper stickers demand. Owners and lovers of domesticated camels, alligators, boa constrictors, bears, wildebeests, mandrills, pythons, pigs, cows, wolves, elephants and other intelligent creatures will rush to f lood the streets with animalistic diversity. But speaking for myself as a tiger owner, I anticipate some objections from other citizens who may not be big-cat people like I am. Some will object that tigers are large dangerous creatures that sometimes tend to bite, or eat, people and other animals whose paths they happen to cross. This may be true of a small minority of tigers, but the behavior of a few rogues in the wild should not be allowed to taint the reputation of the vast majority of pet tigers in captivity. Borges, for example, is extremely gentle and good-natured, and apart from the occasional raccoon or stray dog or cat that happens to wander onto our property, he has never to my knowledge eaten, or even mauled, a living person. Then there is the always sensitive question of cat fights. When two or more tigers (up to the legal limit of three), being somewhat territorial creatures, meet on the street, after sniffing each other’s butts, they occasionally get a bit aggressive and start hissing and making other noises and threatening gestures that tend to frighten small children. But this is just tigers’ way of getting acquainted, and if kept on a titanium chain no longer than 5 feet or shorter than 3 feet, they are very unlikely to cause any serious damage to property or passers-by. It’s true that panhandling with a tiger can be somewhat intimidating— especially if the tiger happens to be homeless—so I would agree to a restriction on such activity. After dark, however, I would lobby strongly for tigers (unlike dogs) to be permitted, as they are naturally nocturnal creatures who burn, as William Blake observed, brightly, thus discouraging gang activity and contributing to public safety. But perhaps the most delicate question regarding the permitting of tigers downtown is the matter of, to put it bluntly, tiger shit. Some people may fear that the droppings of a seven-foot-long (not counting the tail) 700-pound carnivore would be rather stinkily conspicuous on our city’s streets, and that is a legitimate concern. But responsible tiger walkers would bring along a shovel and a large plastic garbage bag so our sidewalks would not become feces-festooned obstacle courses like those of Paris. I’m certain downtown merchants will agree that our local economy will benefit from the increased foot traffic of all kinds of wonderful animals wandering in and out of our shops and restaurants. Some of people’s best friends may be dogs, but we must not tolerate discrimination against tigers. Stephen Kessler is a writer and tiger lover living in Santa Cruz.

HE SUN is only beginning to peek its crimson head over the eastern horizon at Steamer Lane, and already dozens of neoprene-swathed bodies are bobbing on boards in the water. Dominating the human f lotsam on this picture-perfect spring dawn is the standard cadre of surfers who have spent months, if not years, perfecting Steamer’s unique break. But the longboarders and shortboarders don’t have the world-famous
point break to themselves anymore. Here too this morning are the kayaks—long, pointed bananas split in the middle by helmeted riders clutching double-ended oars in bo staff grips. And among them are the stand-up paddleboarders, upright and tall like Venetian gondoliers. These days the latter two categories of wave rider are found in ever more frequent numbers in Santa Cruz and beyond. And this weekend, from Friday, March 26, to Sunday, March 28, the mixed
company displayed this morning will see its traditional surfer population massively outnumbered when the 24th Annual Santa Cruz Kayak Surf Festival hits the Lane. “It’ll be a wild time,� says all-around ocean addict and event founder Dennis Judson of Adventure Sports Unlimited. “People come from all around the planet to compete in this. It will have the best kayak surfers and stand-up paddleboarders there are anywhere.� ¨

The event is the largest of its kind in the world and involves nearly every way imaginable that a person can ride a wave while holding a paddle. At stake are worldwide bragging rights and a handful of prizes like new kayaks and paddleboards for which around 100 skilled paddlers will be competing. Winners in the kayak surf category usually take the podium after spectacular aerial tricks that either end in big points or big disappointments, depending on how they are landed. The contest is also a truly international affair, with folks flying in from more than 10 countries, including England, South Africa, Japan and Ireland. For Galen Licht, a UCSC student who’s been kayak surfing for eight years, competing in the contest is one of the only chances he has to stack up against the world’s talent in his sport. “I just hope we get a swell like this in a couple weeks,� says Licht, coming out of the water onto West Cliff Drive and hauling his dripping $2,200 Valley Rush kayak back to his station wagon. “People in this sport wait all year for this weekend. You really have to go big if you want to win anything.�
New Wave Most folks outside of Santa Cruz picture a kayak knifing through white water river rapids or drifting at a leisurely pace though scenic estuaries. And when the sport of kayak surfing first popped up in England and the United States around 1988, it was the plastic river kayaks that the pioneering surfers used.
These days, professional grade boats are built from high tech Kevlar and carbon fiber. They’re lighter, smaller and tougher, and they allow a kayaker to twist, turn and launch into the air. They can also cost up to $5,000 and may only last a single season in rough waves. Stand-up paddleboards are decidedly less expensive and are, in essence, large surf boards that can support the weight of an upright person. In 2002, Arroyo Grande wave star Fletcher Burton fashioned and rode a board 24 inches wide and 13 feet long. Back then, he says, Hawaii big wave legend Laird Hamilton was the only other surfer who had mastered the art. After that, he says, the sport caught like wildfire. “The most amazing thing about standup paddleboarding is that it’s really catching on worldwide,� Burton says. “It’s like your own little floating island, and it lets you surf any wave, no matter how small. You have an advantage over regular surfers, and sometimes that can lead to drama.� As Burton suggests, kayak surfers, stand-up paddleboarders and “regular� surfers rarely get along. And on the crowded waves at spots like Steamer Lane and Pleasure Point, tension between the camps can get downright explosive. To surfers, kayakers are too big and too bulky, while stand-up paddleboarders are wannabe surfers who can’t paddle with their arms. To some kayakers and paddleboarders, surfers are egotistical purists who think that waves were made for them and them alone. All the drama of the Streamer lineup will pause, however, for the three-day festival. And, as Judson says, people will “just have fun.� “It’s crazy out here, especially this time of year. And us kayak surfers pretty much avoid this place,� he says, looking out at the flotilla of surfers that seems to have doubled in size in the hour between 7am and 8am. “Getting this place to yourself never happens, so when the festival comes around it’s pretty exciting. Old-Time and the New Line The Santa Cruz Blues Festival heads into its 18th season with tribute to yesterday and tomorrow 0G >/C: 2/D7A

ANTA CRUZ’S most venerable music institution, the Santa Cruz Blues Festival, returns to town Memorial Day with a stellar lineup worthy of an 18th birthday party. Under the guiding hand of festival organizer Bill Welch, the festival pays tribute to the both the foundation and the future of the genre with Saturday headliners Ben Harper and the Relentless7 and on Sunday Buddy Guy, who stands as a one-man institution in his own right. The lineup Welch has in place is already promising. The 18th installment in the annual festival will follow a structure similar to years past, in which Saturday highlights up-and-coming talent within the constellation of blues, soul and rock while Sunday is reserved for legacy acts and practitioners of meat-and-potatoes traditional blues. Many of Saturday’s players should be familiar to attendees of Moe’s Alley, the club Welch runs. Southern-fried blues-funk player Eric Lindell opens the day, followed by Dumpstaphunk, the New Orleans funk outfit comprised of the next generation of Neville brothers. Singer/songwriter Joseph Arthur appears, followed by blues chameleon Taj Mahal, who will be making his first appearance at the festival. And last but certainly not least that day is headliner Ben Harper, who comes to Aptos with his latest band, the Relentless7, which Welch describes as “a whole new twist on Ben Harper’s sound.� The singer/songwriter, who has

consigned himself to lilting acoustic blues in recent years, this time opts for a muscular blues-rock approach. Harper’s appearance is something of a coup for Welch, who notes that the singer is very selective about shows and has played few blues festivals in the past. While Welch has yet to finalize the Sunday lineup (he plans on having it finished by Wednesday, but did not have it prepared by presstime), the two artists he can confirm suggest an impressive day. Festival favorite Coco Montoya, a former member of John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, will return for a midday set. Welch describes Montoya’s music as “the essence of what we do.� Sunday will be closed by headliner Buddy Guy, who makes his third appearance at the Blues Festival. Guy needs no introduction to anyone with even a passing interest in the blues, and Welch is charged over having the dean
of the electric Chicago blues returning to the stage. “He’s one of the few first-generation guys still out on the road,� Welch says. “He’s getting close to being in his mid70s, but he’s still doing that straight Chicago blues. I’ve been watching him for nearly 30 years.� The diversity of sounds ref lects what Welch considers the Santa Cruz Blues Festival’s charter: as he describes it, “to show where the music came from and where it’s going. We’ve got a lot of new, crossover stuff and a lot of old stuff. It’s where we think the genre of music is headed.�

Director Kathryn Bigelow does what Howard Hawks would do; she finds the cooperation between men of great competence in a killing trade, rather than pumping up rivalry. Valentin will live on Tolstoy’s commune and record the great man’s thoughts. Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer) is enjoying a sort of Indian summer, watching his minifarm bloom and receiving the adulation of the world. that sticks in the memory is Dakota Fanning’s Cherie Currie dancing, sort of, at a high school talent show to David Bowie’s “Lady Grinning Soul�; it has the best music in the film, it scopes the judgment of a row of scornful Valley girls and the mixed emotions of the teachers watching, alarmed but touched by Currie’s raw need. Fanning’s take on Currie as unformed and modest of talent, ripe for the exploitation, is matched against her friendship (with benefits) with Kristen Stewart’s Joan Jett, a focused, daring professional even at a young age. This biopic of a minor all-girl band of the 1970s makes the case for them as pioneers. Jett had that credibility, but the second best song in this film, “Bad Reputation,� not only comes over the credits but is better used in the upcoming Kick-Ass and came out after the Runaways were finished as a band. Unfortunately, producer Kim Fowley (played as a doubledealing psychedelic

The two supervise a weird staff; we can’t tell them from the inmates without their uniforms. Bad storm, check; power outage, check; escaped lunatic, check. lightning and visits to Teddy by the evermore persistent ghost of his dead wife, Dolores (Michelle Williams). The allyou-can-eat buffet of fruitcakes includes a disfigured Elias Koteas, Patricia Clarkson as a tragic cavewoman, Emily Mortimer as a suburban Medea and Jackie Earle Haley. It’s all laid out with panache, if with stagy chunks of backstory.
