So we have an immediate physical impression of Stephen K., the protagonist in an extraordinary first novel by much published and awarded poet, translator, journalist, essayist and sometime Santa Cruz Weekly contributor Stephen Kessler,

From this early chapter, the rhythm of Kessler’s writing changes as we follow the protagonist from his lysergic experience into deepening psychosis that takes him to San Francisco on a search for a trusted teacher who will surely tell him what to do. His quest takes an abrupt turn to the San Francisco City Jail, the psych ward of San Francisco General Hospital and from there to institutions public and private in Northern and Southern California as Stephen watches and listens for instructions about his poet’s role in bringing about “new harmonious social order.� He seeks out messages encoded in headlines, spelled out in plumbing pipes, delivered by Black Panthers disguised as hospital orderlies and brought to him by the police who, if he gets it right, will publish his collected poetry after he graduates from the City Jail—which must, after all, be the depths of poetry hell. As Stephen’s obsessions increasingly consume him, the reader is drenched in the cataclysms of maniacal internal and spoken rantings bejeweled with exquisite observations and beautiful ironies. A page-long sentence reads like an extended jazz improvisation so far outside it spins a few months out of sight but never out of mind, its long strange passages poetic and terrible enough that you don’t care they have moved far away from any apparent thread of reason. The dis-chords are played by the maestro on an instrument as ancient as history. The voice becomes a voice in your own head, mesmerizing, licking your temples, drawing you into the words, carried by words into unfamiliar and dangerous ideas. The music it creates is heartbreakingly funny and gloriously cruel, with just enough glimmers of crazy wisdom to make you hold on, gasping, and just in time bring you back to the arc of the story.

n The Mental Traveler Kessler writes an archetypal hero’s journey in the tradition of Don Quixote, God’s valiant but deluded knight, who defied the authority of church and state as he traveled on his self-proclaimed holy quest to save the world. It’s also a “road� novel whose character, along with Twain’s Huckleberry Finn and Kerouac’s Dean Moriarty, travels America in search of his own identity. Stephen’s quest satisfyingly delivers
the reader to the back of the book, where a second portrait of Kessler today smiles beatifically above the Author’s Biography. In the biography, the author reveals that an “acute psychotic episode in 1970� led him to abandon his academic career to pursue writing fulltime.

The books on the table are only the most recent evidence of Kessler’s prodigious muse, proof indeed that the quest from tortured young man on the front cover of The Mental Traveler to accomplished author on the back was one wisely undertaken.

Tropicalia to 2.0 The son of a doctor, Gilberto Passos Gil Moreira was born and raised in Salvador, the capital of the northeastern state of Bahia, which is the heart of Afro-Brazilian culture. He started gaining attention in the early 1960s as a second-generation bossa nova singer/songwriter deeply influenced by Joao Gilberto. Later, he found inspiration in the music of Jorge Ben, a singer/songwriter and guitarist who assimilated American funk and R&B more effectively than any other Brazilian. By 1967, Gil was at the center of Tropicalia, a movement founded with fellow Bahians Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa (and the outrageously creative São Paulo band Os Mutantes), who brought an internationalist perspective to Brazil’s insular popular music scene. Inspired by British rock, particularly the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the avant-garde concrete poetry movement and Brazilian roots styles like forro and samba, the early Tropicalia projects adopted a cut-and-paste aesthetic, incorporating distortion, found sounds and elaborate sound design. Infuriating leftist students, who saw the use of English lyrics and rock instrumentation as capitulating to American cultural imperialism, Gil and Veloso insisted that Brazilian music had nothing to fear from the rest of the world. Brazilian artists had plenty to fear, however, from their own military-led government. A crackdown on culture in 1968 resulted in the jailing of many musicians, including Veloso and Gil. They were both forced to flee the country in 1969. Landing in London, they both recorded several albums, mostly in English.
Returning to Brazil in the early 1970s, Veloso and Gil took different musical paths while maintaining a tight creative bond. Gil became a leading force in Brazil’s black consciousness movement, a stance that greatly expanded his sonic palette as he embraced a myriad of influences, particularly Bob Marley. Now Gil is in the vanguard of another movement seeking the free flow of information. In his role as minister of culture, he championed the Creative Commons concept, which seeks to establish an alternative to the international copyright regime that enables license holders to greatly restrict the dissemination of sounds, images and text. Creative Commons allows makers and consumers to freely copy, alter or sample cultural creations as long as the originator is proper credited. Developed and advanced by Stanford University law professor Lawrence Lessig, the concept has won over other high-profile supporters like the Beastie Boys, David Byrne, Brian Eno and the BBC. “I don’t see Creative Commons as something I do because of the specific implications it would have on the Brazilian scene,� says Gil, who has licensed several of his songs for Creative Commons use. “It’s universal, but especially for developing countries, for Africa, Central and South America, I think this possibility of being able to share, to continue to be creative in this cooperative way, is very important.�

IN THE 1920s, a group of Jewish garment workers living in the Bronx decided to take their fate, and their housing, into their own hands. In a daring move they pooled their money and built a cooperative apartment building large enough to house 700 families, thus establishing the United Workers Cooperative Colony. The visionary minds behind the Coops, in a move to get away from the sweatshops and slums that America offered them, created their own utopian apartments, complete with libraries, gardens, art rooms, dance floors and a sense of belonging. The project was a great success, and the Coops became the heart of local political, social and cultural life. Registered as historical landmarks, the original buildings stand as a testament to the visionary spirit of their creators and the collective strength of a community working together for change. At Home in Utopia screens along with the feature film Noodle, episodes of the television series Arab Labor and the romantic documentary Dancing Alfonso as part of the Jewish Film Festival. James’ risk-taking amazes and angers his subordinate, Sgt. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie). The suspenseful, grimly funny script is by co-producer Mark Boal. Renner is outstanding as the inhumanly brave demolition expert. Director Kathryn Bigelow does what Howard Hawks would do; she finds the cooperation between men of great competence in a killing trade, rather than pumping up rivalry. Bigelow breaks through the sense of anonymity that characterizes most Iraq war movies, where helmeted men move alike and talk the same terse slang. (RvB) B63 :/AB AB/B7=< (R; 112 min.) Well cast, visually pleasant yet strangely toneless film about Tolstoy’s last days. Around 1910 in Moscow, Valentin (James McAvoy) is recruited by Chertkov (Paul Giamatti), who is dedicated to carrying out the author’s reformist ideas regarding celibacy and manual labor. Valentin will live on Tolstoy’s commune and record the great man’s thoughts. Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer) is enjoying a sort of Indian summer, watching his minifarm bloom and receiving the adulation of the world. But the count’s countess—Sofya, his wife of nearly 50 years, played by Helen Mirren—has tired of her husband’s utopian politics. Mirren does the great lady thing with ease. one. Johanna Wokalek plays Luisa, who works for a newspaper under the toxic Nazi mentoring of Berlin (hiss) editor Henry (Ulrich Tukur). She will be the photographer when Andi and Toni attack the mountain: several thousand sheer feet of crumbly rock and slippery ice. The ordeal itself is all about incremental things: lives depending on a decision to leave a rope in place or not, or the chance of a July snowstorm. The two supervise a weird staff; we can’t tell them from the inmates without their uniforms. Bad storm, check; power outage, check; escaped lunatic, check. The traditions are honored: nightmare sequences, statues flickering in lightning and visits to Teddy by the ever-more persistent ghost of his dead wife, Dolores (Michelle Williams). The all-you-can-eat buffet of fruitcakes includes a disfigured Elias Koteas, Patricia Clarkson as a tragic cavewoman, Emily Mortimer as a suburban Medea and Jackie Earle Haley. It’s all laid out with panache, if with stagy chunks of backstory. At the wheel is an oversensitive yet clumsy kid Gordy (William Redmayne). The other passenger is Martine (Kristen Stewart), a neglected kid. It’s a mannered yet awkward performance by this undeniably talented actress. Nonstop flashbacks with the lady in Brett’s past, Maria Bello, punctuate the film, along with what seems to be the rumble of some anti-choice tub-thumping. (RvB)

FEELING AT HOME AT HOME At the old homestead, a roof leak which manifested itself on a bathroom wall, repaired, and painted a lovely Robin’s egg blue color, significantly cheered up the rather dull previous color. In the process, everything had to be removed from that wall. I then noticed how uncluttered and more open the space was with nothing lingering on any flat surface available, the normal condition. At the same time I was given a book by an English designer, Sir Terence Conran, founder of Habitat, a popular English store which brought good, affordable, modern design to the general public. He also wrote House Book, an international best seller. Somehow this combo was inspirational and I viewed the freshly painted and emptied space with new eyes, so to speak. Conrad advocates, somewhat tongue in cheek, that people should take all their possessions and pile them up outside the front door. Then take a look at the shell that remains. He advises to first sort out the basic structure, surfaces and finishes. Then bring back belongings that contribute something positive to their lives whether aesthetically, emotionally or practically. In other words, work from the inside out. Start with where you are and who you are to make your home as comfortable as a favorite piece of clothing. Lighting and flooring may be the two most important elements in your home. We are in constant touch with the floor, lighting can enhance or diminish our moods. When on vacation, we live well without most of our possessions. We are reminded that machines break down, need servicing and maintenance and possessions need organization, storage and being looked after. Being offered too much brings on petty choices that can obscure the advantages of practicality and beauty. We can restore and enhance quality to everyday living with things that work well, look beautiful, evoke memories and express our unique personalities. With the complexities and fast pace of modern life, our homes must act as antidotes to the stress and tensions of daily life, provide place and space for relaxation, rejuvenation, contemplation—where we can unwind and be ourselves. This need for space, privacy and comfort is more acute now than ever before. How to do this is a question of recognition. First focus on the simple pleasures that you enjoy- things that stand out in your life, triggers like sounds, smells, sights, intangibles which identify what makes you feel good. Simple things like draperies that open smoothly, a drawer that glides open, walking through leaves in autumn, the smell of damp earth or fresh coffee. A place that feels like yours and no one else’s, where you can stay in touch with what you enjoy. How we live is fundamental to our well-being. Just some pre-spring thoughts stimulated by aromatic blossoms landing on sidewalks, sunnier days, blooming acacias, a repaired wall, a reassessment of the status quo.
