EDITOR’S NOTE

Spring has sprung and New York City is alive with cherry blossom trees lining the Reservoir while the museum mile is packed with visitors lining up to enjoy Manhattan's many cultural treasures. In Palm Beach, the hottest news in town is the opening of Publisher Chase Backer's gorgeous new Advanced Aesthetics MedSpa!

The art scene in the Hamptons is vibrant as well as our resident, jet-setting art world editor Rachel D. Vancelette catches us up with the latest art stories and trends. World-class photographers Annie Watt, Lisa Ramsay, Pawel Litwinski, Mark Seidenfeld, and John Cooper are just a few of the talented artists sharing their inspiring work with us in our Spring Issues.

Popular television and film actor (and old friend) Joshua Malina, perhaps best known for his stellar work in The West Wing, Sports Night, and dozens of other shows over the past 30 years, is lighting up the Great White Way in Tom Stoppard's thought-provoking play Leopoldstadt. Esteemed movie producers Brad Feinstein and Julian Schlossberg are also highlighted inside along with a 75th-anniversary celebration of the Actor's Studio thanks to entertainment writer Sean Buttimer.

As always, we have real estate stories including one on my childhood friend Robert Rosenberg's funky, elegant, and magical hotel, The Hive, in the art district of Wilmington, NC. Robert was a trusted best friend (besides my twin sister) all through high school and beyond. He owns a piece of my heart forever. We named our sons after each other. He was taken from us unexpectedly. Rather than mourn Robert's loss I will celebrate his brilliance, sense of humor, and extraordinary life and ask you, our dear readers, to reach out to a dear friend you might not have spoken with for a little while, and let them know how much you love them too. Thanks!

Enjoy our Spring issues and enjoy Spring, you deserve it!

YOUR NEXT COASTAL MEXICAN ESCAPE

tán A TASTE OF TULUM ARRIVES IN MANHATTAN.

Perfect for an upscale date night or special occasion dinner if you’re in the mood for seafood, bold flavors, and a gorgeous interior that appeals to the senses.

Look no further than Midtown East for your next coastal Mexican escape. Chef-Restaurateur Richard Sandoval and Chef Jonatán Gómez Luna Torres have unveiled their latest joint culinary venture: tán, a new restaurant inspired by the vibrant energies of Tulum and the Yucatàn peninsula just in time for the dropping temperatures in New York City.

The escapist atmosphere tàn provides is made possible by not only the hypermodernist, seafood-focused menu and bespoke seafood display, but also by the interior design of the restaurant thanks to the award-winning PeterMax Co. The

lush array of plants that dress the scene paired with the elaborate henequen fiber wall hangings and woven sisal sun screens come together to create an ambiance of travel, heritage, and true coastal fantasy. Its lounge, lúm, which will serve signature Mexican sips and is set to open in late January, is tucked away with coved, cave-like ceilings, and warm candlelight, effectively bringing the soul of Tulum stateside.

Standout dishes include the Aguachile tán (a crispy potato-chorizo taco with shrimp and aguachile verde), the Red Snapper Tikinxic Style, and the traditional Yucatán Pork Belly, with the Bone Marrow and Yellow Corn Cake being customer favorites.

JOSHUA MALINA

MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO BROADWAY

Why Leopoldstadt?

I would have done any Stoppard Play sight unseen without reading it sight unseen had I been offered it. I'm a huge fan of his work. To get this particular play is meaningful for me as a Jew, somebody whose core identity is as a Jew. It's a pretty epic play in scope about a large intermarried, which is to say an interfaith family in Vienna at the turn of the century and their fates of the next 56 years it just speaks to me and when I read it I was just knocked out by it and I was particularly intrigued by the part that I was being offered.

Tell us about the character Hermann. Hermann is a textile factory owner, and a well-to-do Jew, although he has converted to Catholicism for reasons of greater upward mobility in Vienna in 1899. Somebody who wrestles with his own identity and a character who can be judged ...it's one of those plays where we can sit in the audience and we have the hindsight that the characters don't have. We know what's likely to happen to this family over the next decades and it's easy to judge Hermann for being complacent but it hopefully also sends people out of the theater hopefully questioning their own sense of security and complacency because you can't really see the shifts of history as they are happening and at the top of the play, things are pretty good for Hermann and family in 1899 Vienna.

50 Metropolitan Magazine | metmagny.com 25A
'LEOPOLDSTADT'

'LEOPOLDSTADT'

As a Hollywood actor (Television & Film), and now back to the theater, starring in a piece that takes up the fight against anti-Semitism, that's quite a responsibility, beyond being an amazing artist and actor. Thanks, I do feel it. The director Patrick Marber is brilliant in this and has been so helpful to me. I got offered the role and flew to New York to see the play. I knew I was going to do the play. He said to me subsequently after I took the job that," If you decided the play wasn't for you I would have told you it's your responsibility to take this job and you have to take it." So it does feel like a privilege and a gift and a responsibility because as you say, anti-Semitism and other forms of senseless hatred do not go out of style and in fact, they sometimes surge, and now is such a time.

What else will audiences get out of the play? Sometimes when you talk about an important piece of theater it sounds like it is not enjoyable to see and there's great joy and laughs in this play and you feel the absence of many of the characters by the end of the play because you've seen them in good times and you can feel the pain

of the loss. But now is a time of increasing ignorance about the Holocaust and increasing hate crimes against Jews and against others so I think .maybe the two are connected perhaps ...and so I do think it is a very important piece of theater and a very apt time for it to be produced and I'm very happy to be part of this ...it speaks to me.

How does it feel to be back on stage again after being one of the busiest television and film actors we've ever spoken with?

Thanks, I love it I don't want to talk down about TV and film because it has been my meal ticket for the past 30 years and I thoroughly enjoy it and it has its own thrills and challenges and excitement but I did a play this past summer before Leopoldstadt for the first time in 30 years before I did Leopoldstadt, another natively Jewish play, Nathan Englander's play, "What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank," and it was my first time back on the stage, in full production in decades and maybe it sounds hackneyed but it was like oh yeah this was the thrill... this is what got me...like when we were in high school together (Horace Mann) and I was doing plays...

The Mikado, Guys & Dolls!

Yes! So truly I am returning to my original love...theater and the challenges and the upside are very different from doing a film. You are on a TV show and you might spend 16 hours shooting 7 pages of material over the course of a day in a play it does not stop and start and stop and start making sure you get one decent take...you get up in Leopoldstadt and two hours and 10 minutes later you leave the stage and you've either delivered the piece and it's happened for that audience that night or it hasn't and I like that challenge. It's daunting and I look forward all day to doing the play and then there's a moment when I step on and I think what? why did I choose this for a living but then I walk out and there's that immediate...the other thing is you work on a TV show and sometimes 5 months later you find out if anybody liked what you did and theater you find out right away you can hear and feel whether the audience has connected to what you are doing or not.

Aaron Sorkin has been your biggest champion in Hollywood how does his writing compare to Tom Stoppard's?

They both are hyper-articulate and incredible writers whose language I think has a musical nature to it and for whatever reason I've always felt very comfortable with Aaron's writing and I felt like I knew how he heard it and he

52 Metropolitan Magazine | metmagny.com 25A

described it that way where he liked the sound of language as much as the meaning and import of the words and I feel like Stoppard is similar and for me I'm just like every other actor, desperate for good material because if you work long enough much of what you do is not very good material that's the nature of the thing so when you have opportunity to do something that Aaron Sorkin has written or Tom Stoppard, it's just a joy. I'm one of those actors who feels like the words are the star and if I can just stay out of the way of this incredible writing then it will make me look better and I'll have done my job.

Over 30 years as a very popular working actor in Hollywood. Have you gotten any acting lessons from some of the biggest names in Hollywood? What was it like to work with Jack Nicholson?

My first big movie job was Aaron Sorkin and A Few Good Men, as small a role as you could have and claim to have a speaking role, I played Tom in A Few Good Men and Jack Nicholson played Colonel Jessup. I literally had 5 words in the movie...three of them are "yes" and two of them are "sir"...but when it was time for me to say "yes sir" to him and it was time for them to just shoot my single with me at the door, Jack Nicholson stood off camera and

gave a really long speech at 100 percent performance level just so that I could say yes sir to him properly and I remember just thinking oh wow this is how that works and that no matter that you could be Jack f*cking Nicholson that you have to give 100 percent when you are off camera so that somebody who is saying "yes sir" to you has something to play off of. So, I was always like I am never going to have any kind of attitude as an actor myself, so that was a big lesson that I've tried to carry with me.

How about Clint Eastwood?

I worked on In The Line of Fire with Clint Eastwood who couldn't have been nicer to me and he spoke so softly and did so little that there were literally times when I was thinking is it my time to say a line did Clint even say his line? Then I saw the movie and thought wow that all really works and when you are on film you can be really small and the camera reads your mind...I felt like I got a nice little lesson in film acting from Clint.

The West Wing, Sports Night are just two of your other wellknown TV shows. Both were large ensemble casts. There's a real similarity between what I am trying to do in Leopoldstadt and what I tried to do in The West Wing. Both of

April 2023 53

them were already hits so I take no credit for their success either they were these plum jobs where they were both stellar ensembles with incredible actors who were already on projects that were a hit that they made a hit and both of them feel like trying to jump onto a moving train and trying not to be the person who drags down the entire endeavor. So with West Wing, it was like I am going to try to play up to these people's level and try to drop into this great ensemble and that was a very positive experience then when I came and saw the play and had been offered the job my first feeling was oh my god do I belong on stage with these 38 people because the cast is fantastic, even though it is largely people I had seen before but also many people making their Broadway debuts but brilliant actors so I felt the same sort of pressure like I need to get more rehearsal time than the original cast did because I need to get up to speed quickly so that when I land I don't throw the whole thing off...so I guess I'm comfortable being one cog in a bigger machine. I like working in a bigger ensemble and I feel very welcomed by this cast.

Future acting plans?

I would like to continue doing theater but if someone wants to offer me a juicy role in a TV show I'm not going to turn it down. For a lot of years, I needed to make a living and so it's either make a living in TV and film than in theater also I had young kids and it was like if you are in a play then daddy's working at bedtime every night. Now my kids are 20 and 25, I've done two plays in a row and if somebody's got another play for me I would love to continue doing theater I don't know what's next but I would love for it to be another play.

Final thoughts on what audiences will take away from Leopoldstadt?

Hopefully, what people take away is while you are sitting there thinking about these characters in 1899 and the 1900s being so complacent about where their lives are, that you should look at your own life and your own sense of complacency and security and that you too might one day be swept up in some shifting history that you are unaware of at the moment... and that antiSemitism is on the rise and it's with us as are other forms of hatred. I think all minorities and hated groups need to be allies for each other. Not just looking out for ourselves but against all forms of hatred.

DAYDREAMING THE ORIGINAL STAYCATION: THE DREAM HOTEL L

ooking for your next staycationwe found it at The Dream Hotel Chelsea. From NFT artwork galleries to the perfect Karl Lagerfeld soap and shampoo~ this special staycation escape will be a dream come true! Arriving at the hotel one will find two hundred hand-blown glass globes floating through the space and congregating over The Bodega Negra restaurant filling the space with a magical light cloud effect along with a very chillaxing vibe and DJ spinning your favorite tunes. Each fixture and furnishing has been custom designed and selected for the public spaces and guestrooms in The Dream to complement the exterior design of the hotel which evokes a contemporary limitless feeling of space and light throughout the entire guest experience.

Founded in 2004 by Vikram Chatwai, a prominent New York hotelier, the first dream hotel opened in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood and quickly gain a reputation for its hip and innovative design including the special originally designed portal-shaped windows which lead visitors upon entering each guest room to instantly be captured by incredible cityscape views. The unique skyline views and circular windows bring one right into the action of Manhattan yet seems far enough away to feel the escape from the frenetic energy of the city. Designed by Handel Architects, the 12-story building includes 316 guestrooms, two restaurants, rooftop and VIP lounges, an outdoor pool and pool bar, a gym, event space, and ground-floor retail including

a hair salon The Benjamin. Guests may feel they are preparing to walk the latest fashion runway to entering the latest hip VIP private nightclub, take a break at their favorite speak-easy lounge to relaxing by the pool - all of this in one place and under the same roof.

The Dream sits on a though-block site, fronting both 16th and 17th Streets, and is adjacent to the Maritime Hotel, which sits adjacent to the west. In 1964, the National Maritime Union of America commissioned New Orleans-based architect Albert Ledner to design a new headquarters for the Union, on Seventh Avenue between 12th and 13th Streets. Two years later, he designed an annex for the headquarters on the site where Dream currently sits. Rumors have swirled for years that the hotel is actually inspired by Andy Warhol’s Factory and upon being upgraded during our visit to a “silver room” it is hard to ignore the amazing shine of the hotel’s complete design of silver inspiration!

From the rooftop lounge to the open-air city skyline The Dream provides a fresh contemporary twist for the perfect escape for your next staycation. The rooftop bar PHD has gained popularity over the years with the likes of the fashion and art world colliding for events and parties always hitting the pages of all the top magazines. During New York Fashion week both PHD to the

exclusive Electric Room on the ground floor of the hotel welcomed such celebrities as Cameron Diaz, Diddy, Katy Perry to Adam Lambert. From on-site NFT galleries throughout the lobby to the unique artwork throughout the interior, one feels like they are walking a fashion x art runway. The manager welcomed us with fresh chocolate strawberries and our favorites like Fiji water, but the very special moment was seeing the most spectacular views of the Empire State building out the window in spectacular colors- it really took our breath away.

A creative staycation when you need a change of scenery can mean first-class service, a cozy bed, and fabulous amenities for relaxing which The Dream has it all. We decided to use our favorite app Doordash to order from our favorite local NY spots such as hip French restaurant Buvette in the West Village to incredible glutenfree ricotta pancakes from Friedman’s amazing brunch options. The great discovery was the hotel will send your delivery right up to your door plus each room has its own “privacy button” just in case one wants to be left to their own escape. Get your walking shoes on to discover the neighborhood which has everything within a short walking distance- from your favorite spots from Chelsea art galleries to the West Village eateries. Dream the dream at THE DREAM!

JULIAN SCHLOSSBERG

You can’t fathom all the things that come back to you until you start to write a memoir.” Quite possibly megaproducer Julian Schlossberg’s famous last words…before he starts the next memoir, that is. That’s right – there’s literally so much information and memories contained in the now-available Try Not To Hold It Against Me, that he has to write a part 2! But with a monster of a career that Julian Schlossberg has had, it’s actually not unfathomable that he might initially forget some of the many stories that have happened over an almost 60 year career.

Many readers in the tri-state area may remember a radio show named Movie Talk that premiered on WMCA and was later on WOR. Julian was the host for a combined 9 years, and spoke to such industry titans as Bob Hope, Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman, and Warren Beatty.

Movie Talk was one of only three shows in New York City that Bob Hope would even go on – the other two being Johnny Carson and Mike Douglas (both TV).Jack Nicholson once astonishingly admitted on the show that every time he starts a new film, he’s not sure if he still has it as an actor. Robert Duvall would later agree with this sentiment; that the weight of a film resting on your shoulders as the star can be intimidating.

But Movie Talk would turn out to only be a small part in Julian’s career. Over the years, he’s been an assistant account representative at ABC, account executive at the Walter Reade Organization, studio executive at Paramount, the founder of Castle Hill Productions, producer on Broadway, lecturer, and even record producer. That’s just a few things. It’s really a behemoth of a career, all neatly laid out in Try Not To Hold It Against Me (a phrase he would use on the phone when he explained that he was a producer from New York!). What really makes the book great is the jaw-dropping stories and great advice contained within.

When asked what the biggest takeaway for readers should be, Julian said he wants to “entertain, but educate.” And he does just that. Many of the stories are absolutely wild. Like the time he went drinking with George C. Scott, and after exclaiming “this is great…I have to do this more often,” George grabbed him hard by the shoulders and set him straight. “This is not great. Promise me you won’t do this again!” When General Patton himself tells you to do something, you say, “yes, sir” and you do it! Julian never got drunk again.

Or there was the time at Cannes when Harrison Ford was late for a party in his honor and had to hitch a ride with Julian and his then-wife. Julian had to quickly re-familiarize himself with driving a stick shift, in a dark, hilly terrain, with hardly any idea of where he was going. Though Harrison was a good sport, laughing and joking the whole time, we can all imagine Indiana Jones barely holding onto his signature hat as he bounces back and forth in the back of a tiny car, just thankful he doesn’t have to deal with any snakes named Reggie.

What’s even more astonishing than the fun or funny stories that are recounted in the book are the business failures that occurred over the years…and Julian doesn’t hold back. Most people assume that at a certain level of the industry, pieces just magically fall into place and everything works out. But “sure things” routinely fall apart, whether they be a Broadway play with a seemingly-hungry all-star cast or a potential mega-studio with international funding that falls apart due to cultural differences.

But many things obviously did work out. Castle Hill Productions, founded by Julian, was an independent distribution company that was active from 1978 to 2009 (after being sold twice, the holdings are now held by Shout! Factory), and revived and restored over 200 classic movies, including films by Elia Kazan, John Cassavetes, and Orson Welles. Given the name Castle Hill Productions, Julian must be from the Bronx, right? Half-right. While Julian Schlossberg is from the Bronx, that’s not where the name comes from (he actually grew up miles away from Castle Hill Ave). In German, “Schloss” means castle, and “Berg”

72 Metropolitan Magazine | metmagny.com 25A
HOLLYWOOD PROFILE

means mountain. Seeing as he was formerly employed at Paramount, Julian decided to drop the “mountain,” and just go with “hill,” instead. But good guess on the whole Bronx bit.

Try Not To Hold It Against Me manages to be incredibly relatable. While very few of us have been studio executives or film distributors, we’ve all had moments where we felt in over our heads, or someone higher up overruled us but we took the blame anyway. The book’s foreword is written by Elaine May…and you’ll exhale with relief when it’s done. No one can write like Elaine, so you’ll need to read it for yourself. Regardless, upon release of Mikey and Nicky (1976), written and directed by Elaine, Julian (Vice President of Production at Paramount at the time) was given specific instructions when marketing a sneak preview of the film in Washington, D.C. Julian was overruled by an executive in charge of…him. The screening was a disaster, and Elaine initially blamed Julian. But Elaine soon forgave him after realizing the situation he had been put in. And since then, Julian and Elaine have not only worked together many times, but remain close friends to this day.

When asked what he looks for in a project when deciding whether to produce or not, Julian simply responded that he needs to “fall in love” with said project. If you are going to spend a year plus working on something, you need to be really into it. He also likes to see strong characterization and big arcs (changes) or redemption. But he also really loves comedy…if it makes you laugh on the page, it’s something he has to try and do.

Given all the areas Julian’s worked in – film, theater, radio, distribution, lecturing, etc. – which of those things does he enjoy/ wish to work in most? In response, Julian mentioned something interesting regarding theater, as opposed to film. In film, when the final edit is complete, (for the most part) the film is completely done. It is what it is. But with theater, there’s more control… you can keep working on it, even after it opens. Performances can be fixed after reviews. He said it’s also nice to be stable in one location like a rehearsal hall, as opposed to doing a company move from location to location.

When asked if he has any advice for anyone looking to follow in his footsteps, Julian explained that one of the problems is that “too many people let go of the ledge too quickly.” You need to eat, sleep, and breathe the industry. You need to be able to sacrifice your personal life. “It’s only work if you don’t want to do it.”

Fellow producer Mike Nichols once proclaimed to Academy Award winning actor F. Murray Abraham in regards to Julian, “there goes the nicest producer in show business.” He may just be right. He’s one of the friendliest Bronx natives you’ll have the pleasure of getting to talk to, if you’re lucky enough.

Try Not To Hold It Against Me by Julian Schlossberg is available through Beaufort Books on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Indiebound, and Bookshop.

THE ACTOR'S STUDIO CELEBRATES 75TH ANNIVERSARY

n March 12, 2020, Beau Gravitte was on his way to the Actor’s Studio when he received a call from the actress he was supposed to be meeting with. When asked whether or not they would still be meeting, Beau came to a realization. While he initially wanted to say yes, he ultimately decided that he did not want to endanger the health of this mother-of-a-one-year-old. After hanging up, Beau immediately called actress Ellen Burstyn, and the two of them agreed…it was time to close down the Actor’s Studio. For the moment.

Through the majesty of Zoom, a technology we’ve all become masters of recently, the Actor’s Studio powered through the darkest days of the pandemic. When the coast was relatively clear, in-person sessions slowly recommenced, and now the studio has all but returned to where it was prior to the pandemic’s initial outbreak. And this year, the Actor’s Studio celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Founded in 1947 by Elia Kazan, Cheryl Crawford, and Robert Lewis, the Actor’s Studio (also known as the ‘home of method acting’) is a completely private, non-commercial organization that provides an environment for professional actors to exercise their craft without commercial judgment. Inspired by Russian actor and director Konstantin Stanislavski, members are able to develop privately…to see what works and/ or learn from failures. Beau Gravitte, the current artistic director, illuminates, “on Broadway, you don’t have time to ‘live inside moments’...you have a very limited time to get things right, and then it’s on to performance time.”

Membership in the Actor’s Studio is not only lifelong, but it’s free and bi-coastal. A series of auditions is necessary first, but upon completion, members are invited in and are free to use either the West Hollywood location or the studio’s birthplace…here in New York on W 44th St. The studio is not an acting school, though; members are already well aware of the craft of acting. Currently, the studio is maintained by copresidents Ellen Burstyn, Alec Baldwin, and Al Pacino, with Beau Gravitte as Artistic Director, and co-Artistic Directors Estelle Parsons, Michael Aronov, and Javier Molina. In Los Angeles, Salome Jens handles duties as the Artistic Director and Katherine Cortez as the coArtistic Director. Over the years, membership has seen the likes of Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe, Sidney Poitier,

Paul Newman, and Bradley Cooper, just to name a few. The list of past and current members is as long as it is impressive.

For Beau, being Artistic Director of the NYC Actor’s Studio has been “the most fulfilling thing he’s done in his life.” He certainly has big shoes to fill…the founding Artistic Director was none other than Lee Strasberg himself! While Beau did not actually become a member of the Actor’s Studio until the year after Strasberg died (1982), Beau’s mentor, current co-president Ellen Burstyn, was similarly mentored by Strasberg. To fully complete the circle, Beau’s first production on Broadway, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, was originally workshopped in the Actor’s Studio! At the time, the Baylor graduate was working a short 3-month stint at the Russian Tea Room, having just arrived from Dallas, and the opportunity allowed for him to receive his Actors’ Equity card. In 2005,

he was approached about joining the studio’s Board of Directors while working The Light In the Piazza at Lincoln Center, and then in 2016 was asked to be Artistic Director. Beau is married to Tony-winning Broadway actress Debbie Shapiro Gravitte, and they have 3 children.

Strasberg’s effect on acting can’t be measured. He has been quoted as saying that Marlon Brando and Marilyn Monroe, both Actor’s Studio alum, are the two greatest acting talents he worked with. Charles Grodin convinced Gene Wilder to join the Actor’s Studio after telling him about Strasberg’s ‘method acting.’ Years later on the Dick Cavett Show, Wilder would proclaim, “I’m not a good actor, I’m a good reactor!” Likewise, past member Eli Wallach once said, “The big secret in acting is listening to people.”

The 75th anniversary of the Actor’s Studio means a lot to Beau Gravitte. He says, “It’s a way to honor the past, while also paving the way for the future.” Recently, the studio hosted two special events, both free and open to the public. First was The Playwright: Tales From the Color Line, a one-night-only event that celebrated Black membership of the Actor’s Studio and its award-winning contribution to American theater. Second was The Actor’s Studio: In Progress, a two-night event that offered a glimpse behind the doors, showcasing ‘open rehearsals’ of curated scenes from big productions or variations on a scene, etc.

The weekend of April 21-22 will be dedicated to works brought in by and directed by co-Artistic Director Estelle Parsons. More information on the Actor’s Studio and upcoming events can be found at TheActorsStudio. org, and on Facebook and Instagram theofficialactorsstudio. Here’s to another 75 years.

A DIVE INTO ART X FASHION: A DECADE OF INSPIRATION TO REMEMBER

ART X FASHION has been closely related for centuries and continues to this day to engage us in inspiring ways! From the Renaissance paintings depicted with fashionable clothing to the contemporary catwalks paired with contemporary art, these two worlds are constantly intersecting. As an art advisor/fashion consultant it is important to consider this connection and provide insightful guidance when it comes to fashion and art for collectors, clients, and audiences worldwide. Both unique and expressive, today’s creatives are often continuously influenced by each other in mysterious and interesting ways.

One way “traditional and contemporary art” can aid fashion is by influencing the color schemes and patterns of clothing. Fine art paintings or street art murals can offer inspiration for the hues and textures that fashion designers utilize for their pieces. For instance, the intricate prints of an abstract painting inspired by nature could translate into a beautiful floral dress, or the bold brushstrokes of a Pop Art piece may inspire a bright and energetic outfit. We see this in fashion designers Diane Von Furstenberg’s amazing patterned wrap dresses to Cynthia Rowley’s fashion brand collaborations from her own fashion line to Pampers and Band-Aid brands!

MARILYN MINTER X EDIE PARKER

Contemporary American artist Marilyn Minter explores feminism cleverly by weaving together layers of celebrity and fashion. Her sometimes visceral work was presented as a part of “A Year of Yes: Reimagining Feminism at the Brooklyn Museum.” Minter joined a year long series of ten diverse exhibitions. She participated in the 20162017 “Pretty/Dirty” exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum, and her collaboration with Edie Parker produced two limited-edition clutches. The pearlescent acrylic styles were exclusively sold

at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The Carol Bag featured a “Glitter Mouth,” and the Jean Bag featured “Wet Kiss” by the artist. The exclusive limited edition only ran 15 of each of the styles and retailed at $1295

Another way is to encourage the promotion of contemporary artists through fashion events, such as runway shows or pop-up shops. This not only supports rising talent in the art world,

but it also diversifies and adds a unique aspect to the fashion industry. Collaborating with artists can lead to creative and innovative designs that attract attention and stand out amongst other designers.

April 2023 77
"While fashion is defined by its practicality, artists have challenged the boundaries by creating avant-garde clothing that serves as functional pieces of art."

ASHLEY LONGSHORE X CHRISTIAN SIRIANO

Known for his all-embracing, across the board real-world acceptance of everyone, top fashion designer, Christian Siriano joined with artist and painter Ashley Longshore asking her to paint eight of his female muses, including Janelle Monáe, Lady Gaga, Laverne Cox, Frida Kahlo, Kate Moss, and Audrey Hepburn. The 6 ft x 5 ft portraits were clothed in Siriano’s spring/summer collection in 2020. Presenting as if it might be an art exhibition, Siriano told The Hollywood Reporter, The collection was inspired by this idea of modern pop artists, particularly Ashley, who painted today. Longshore added “This is what we need in America right now. I mean, the news is depressing. We need inspiration. We need color. We need clothes. We need music. We need poems.”

Furthermore, art and fashion can intersect in the creation of wearable art. While fashion is defined by its practicality, artists have challenged the boundaries by creating avant-garde clothing that serves as functional pieces of art. This is a great way for artists to showcase their creativity, as well as for fashion designers to incorporate fine art into their work.

YOKO ONO X OPENING CEREMONY

Menswear apparel line, Opening Ceremony, teamed up with Yoko Ono, who considers herself not just a celebrity, but an artist, to release a collection based on some sketches drawn by Ono titled the work Fashion for Men, which was filled with sheer cutouts and explicit handprint placements [called slightly bizarre by some critics]. With bold neon hues, the 52-piece collection was said to be inspired and made as a wedding present for the late John Lennon.

It is also important to consider not only the cultural impact but also the environmental sustainability of fashion and art. The fashion industry

is known to produce a lot of waste and pollution, and there are emerging fashion designers who are making efforts to address this issue. By supporting sustainable fashion and artists who use ecofriendly materials, we can contribute to saving the planet while still enjoying beautiful artwork in fashion.

The connection between art and fashion is undeniable. It is important to recognize this relationship and utilize it, from promoting emerging artists and supporting sustainable fashion to encouraging creative collaborations and even wearable art, there are countless ways to merge these two worlds productively.

BANKSY X DIESEL O DIESEL

Diesel, the Italian company led by Renzo Rosso is known for its out-of-the-box unconventional styles, merging street style and pop culture. The brand’s marketing campaign clearly states it was inspired by the “Better Out than In” project of 2013 created in New York by the great street artist Banksy.

Street artist Banksy was all the buzz in New York when he opened a special stall near Central Park in order to sell his “fake spray art” at incredibly low prices. The customers at the time bought the works and were unaware that they brought home artworks by the famous artist. At the time, the artist’s artworks in the press have been collected by celebrities such as Brad Pitt and others, when for remarkably high

prices from $250,000 and up. The brand Diesel, inspired by this popup decided to secretly open a fake shop on Canal Street with a sign branded “DEISEL.” They sought to sell unique items at far reduced prices with individual counterfeit labels to continue the stunt. They created a video that went into the full story with hopes it would go viral and achieve their goal of global press and media. It worked, launching worldwide sales for the brand.

NATURE, UNSEEN,”

BY

L.A.-BASED PAINTER

SYLVAIN LATENDRESSE

Opens April 21st at Rebecca Molayem Gallery

Latendresse’s brilliantly color-saturated pieces reimagine Central California country landscapes

California Nature, Unseen,” Los Angeles-based painter Sylvain Latendresse’s pop-up exhibition at Rebecca Molayem Gallery, opens with an artist’s reception on Friday, April 21 from 6-9PM. The show will also be on view on Saturday, April 22 from 11AM-6PM. Latendresse is a Quebec native, and the exhibition is co-sponsored by the Quebec Government Office in Los Angeles

Lantendresse has lived in Los Angeles since 2008 where he was instantly mesmerized by its vibrant culture and landscape. He sees Southern California as a “place of constant reinvention and visual stimulus.” Latendresse has painted and been involved with arts and culture throughout his entire professional life – as an artist, a curator, a writer, a critic, and a director of cultural centers and programs. Upon moving to Los Angeles from Canada, his painting practice took a back seat to other pursuits. That changed when the pandemic arrived, giving him the time and space to create new work and bring life force into that cloistered time.

“CALIFORNIA
AN EXHIBITION

Based on places in Central California that the artists knows and loves, the landscapes that emerged are dreamlike, and sometimes surreal. These enchanted vistas are realized with rich and often Fauvist colors – including a masterful use of yellow and purple hues – and scintillating dappled textures. Latendresse paints only with palette knives, and the rich swaths of acrylic paint put forth a tactile quality suggesting you are physically entering into the spaces he has imagined.

Latendresse says, “Some people compare the painting to impressionism, pointillism, or even expressionism. And while I understand the comparison, for me the true inspiration lies elsewhere. It was photography, specifically the reference images I took in the rolling hillsides of the central California coast, that became my springboard into a freshly perceived—and unperceived reality. During the existential crisis of the pandemic, these paintings were my personal exploration into the true nature of reality—the seen and unseen, the multiplicity of meanings which merge and collide, and can only be described as consciousness.”

About the artist:

In 2008, I moved to Los Angeles and found myself mesmerized by the vibrant culture and landscape. I am happy to call California home, a place of constant reinvention and visual stimulus. A Quebec native, I have worked in Montreal as a painter, visual artist, independent curator, contemporary art consultant, writer, and critic. After receiving my bachelor’s degree in fine arts at the University of Quebec in Montreal, I focused my studies on painting and went on to complete a master’s degree in Art History. I wrote my master’s thesis on the influential German artist Joseph Beuys. As President of the board council of Action Art Actuel, an artist’s Centre, I spent

seven years curating exhibitions, supporting membership, and launching an international residency exchange with Queretaro, Mexico. As an art critic and consultant, I worked for the most prominent corporate art collection in Canada, Loto-Quebec Art Collection, and wrote for all the major Quebec Art magazines such as Vies des Arts, Esse, Etc Montreal, and Spirale. In parallel with my art career, I have also been actively involved in the Quebec cultural scene for more than 35 years. I served as Assistant Director at the Montreal International Film Market, an event held in conjunction with the Montreal World Film Festival as well as an international liaison for the Rendez-vous du Cinema Quebecois and Quebec Culture Days.

AMY ANDERSSON

Metropolitan was recently introduced to one of the few female premier orchestra conductors in the world today. Given the recent Oscar nominated film on this subject, we thought you would like to read about a true-life, female conductor. We know you will be as inspired as we were.

Amy Andersson is an internationally renowned, award-winning conductor. The Society for Composers and Lyricists recently awarded her for outstanding achievement in visuals and music. In February she accepted this specially created “Jury Award” for Women Warriors: The Voices of Change, a new symphony concert, for which she was creator, writer, producer and conductor!

This compliments her recent Grammy and BMI “Impact Award” for the soundtrack, as well as recent appointment as first female conductor to teach at USC in the screen scoring department.

Fun fact: Passionately devoted to the piano at an early age, at 10 she was composing scores and lyrics. On her 11th birthday, which fell during the winter, she composed a piece entitled “My 11th Winter”.

Reality check: What is your prep to learning an orchestra score and how does it feel to be on the podium?

Prep: Rigorous, detailed study of the ochestration, character, harmony, phrasing, bar structure and how to express that through physical gestures.

Conducting: It takes physical endurance and mental agility to achieve an expressive and organic oneness with the musicians through breath and movement. When it happens it is ECSTASY!!

Word count is 251.

Warhol—an illustrator, and many other famous names in Art who began in advertising. The 6th edition of MvVO ART/AD ART SHOW is an extraordinary opportunity for emerging artists to get discovered!” said Maria van Vlodrop, Founder & CEO of MvVO ART, and the creator of AD ART SHOW—The Platform for Artists from Advertising, named a Top Ten Cultural Shaper, Creative 100 Adweek Award

BRAD FEINSTEIN MOVIE PRODUCER

When a kid from Philly dreamed of going into the movie business, the general consensus was, “you can’t just make movies. People don’t just get to go do that.” Not going into the family business wasn’t so much a big deal, but, “what do you know about making movies?” His response, “I’ll figure it out!” And he did figure it out.

When starting his career as a financial advisor, Brad Feinstein never thought about what was on the other side of a camera. He also never realized just how many jobs exist within the entertainment industry, and that there might be a place for him. “I always thought I was going to be in the furniture business like the last four generations of my family, or maybe a lawyer, longshoreman, a cop, a fireman, or doctor – that’s all the jobs we knew about.”

WHEN LOOKING FOR A FILM TO PRODUCE, “THE CREATIVE HAS TO MAKE SENSE. IT HAS TO BE A GREAT SCRIPT, AND THEN THE FINANCE PLAN HAS TO MAKE SENSE. IF BOTH THINGS MAKE SENSE, THEN YOU YOU KNOW YOU HAVE A MOVIE.”

But Brad found a job that’s slightly more interesting…namely the founder and CEO of Romulus Entertainment. Romulus has been responsible for films like Academy Award-winning Fences (2016), The Banker (2020), Last Looks (2021), etc. As you can imagine, he grew up with a love of film; his parents would take him to the movies routinely when he was a kid. But now that he has been on the other side of the camera, Brad can’t watch a movie without dissecting it. “Would I have used this angle? Would I have been on this lens? You watch The Revenant (2015), and think about all those poor people sitting outside in the snow, freezing between each take!”

Getting into the industry happened somewhat by accident. While working in finance straight out of school at University of Florida, Brad was continually approached by entertainers and actor clients who would ask how they could finance their movies and if he knew of a way to make it happen. Brad took it upon himself to learn more about film finance and started working from that angle, figuring out how it could be done. Later after transitioning to Investment Banking he started financing slates of film. But even then, it still took him a long time to get from a financial seat into a creative seat. “When you come in through that door (the financial side), people view you as a suit…they see you as money.” But now he’s firmly planted in that creative seat as lead producer on everything from Romulus Entertainment.

What exactly goes into being a producer? It’s a simple question that doesn’t always have a simple answer. For Brad, he’s with these movies ‘cradle to grave.’ This entails finding (or developing) the script, hiring the talent (actors, directors, and crew), working with the director once one is on board, influencing the look and feel of the movie, being on set every day during principal photography, editing the film, and handles the distribution deal from the film’s side with the studio . Phew – you can exhale now.

When looking for a film to produce, Brad explains, “the creative has to make sense. It has to be a great script, and then the finance plan has to make sense. If both things make sense, then you you know you have a movie.” Creatively, Romulus makes two kinds of movies. First is prestige, diverse dramas like Fences, The Banker, Beatriz At Dinner (2017), etc. Movies that have a viewpoint or say something, movies that make people think. “I want there to be discussion and a dialogue, I want it to be thought-provoking.”

Second is the ‘bigger’ action-thrillers, that are a little broader, a little more theatrical popcorn movies…but a cerebral version of those movies, not just action for action’s sake. “I want to make movies that are fun and a ride, but are also smart.” A good example of this from the Romulus catalog is the wildly-underrated Last Looks (currently on Hulu). Released during the pandemic, Last Looks was one of a few films that Romulus had to hold on to immediately after completing, due to the uncertainty (putting it mildly) of what theatrical releases and streaming would look like. But it allowed for a rare deal with Paramount, and Brad describes it as, “one of the most enjoyable movie making experiences I’ve had. Everyone got along and had a really good time.” Brad had nothing but great things to say about working with director Tim Kirkby and a stellar cast that included the likes of Charlie Hunnam, the legendary Mel Gibson, Lucy Fry, Clancy Brown, and Paul Ben Victor. Even Brad’s wife, Xen Sams, and youngest daughter Alexa managed to make appearances in the film!

But it’s not always sunshine and rainbows while on a production. There have been ‘days.’ “It’s rough making a movie, but if it were easy, everyone would do it. There are those days when you’re the guy sitting out in the snow making The Revenant. But being a good producer means being a good problem solver. I’ve always been a bit of a fixer.” That ability to problem solve, he says, is what he loves most about the job. “There’s always something that needs to be dealt with on a film set. The people who are most successful at navigating those problems and issues without taking it personally are typically the most successful producers.”

What does he have going on now? Well, he’s in pre production on three separate projects! Brad’s next movie will be shooting in Newark, which will make driving to the set easier on the New Jersey resident. While he can’t divulge too much information currently, he did reveal that his next project is called” Killing Castro” and surrounds Castro’s visit to the US in 1960 for his first UN convention…a visit which famously saw him meet with Malcolm X in Harlem and the government and organized crime colluding to kill him.. The other two projects already have A-list talent attached and are getting close to principal photography. More details to come at a later date. It’s clear that Romulus will keep making unique and compelling content for the independent film market.

INTIMACY AFTER 50

Sex is marketed as the almighty elixir of ecstasy and lusty sips to quench our quest for affection. Yet, the craft of coitus can be daunting with age and as off-putting as a rot gut glass of vino or host of experiences we tolerated when younger.

Oddly, some sophomorically proclaim that “Sex is like pizza,” in that, “even BAD sex is still pretty good.” With all due respect to those who carry this manifesto or promulgation in their arsenal, (and to those who eat pizza), there is NOTHING about “bad sex” that makes a pantomime of feigned passion enjoyable. Sparing ourselves from disappointing intercourse becomes worlds easier when an emotional maturity outplays the mere veneer of youth.

For when we have learned to inextricably love and appreciate our own being and thus body too; and gotten comfortable with the excruciatingly uncomfortable fluctuations which emerge physically with age, we dance with such shifts as our beauty and accrued power. Sex is now taken to a new and palpable somatic tier which our younger self would never have held a confident command of or understood. Like a fine libation, which traveled thousands of years through cultivations, adaptations, and sips sampled prior to reaching your glass as its "best," sexiness isn’t contingent upon our years though it’s amplified immensely by the hard won resilient fortitude, selfrespect and self-awareness lending to the big feature movie of LIFE!

That’s a mighty different beat to move and groove to than “Pizza Sex” if you ask me.

Laurie-Beth's tips for better sex after 50:

1 2 3 4 5

Be upfront and proud of your age when engaging sexually, letting your partner know that they're dealing with someone grateful for life experience and for the honor of connecting with them!

Don't attempt to hide or cover up physical signs of age when having sex. Your lover knows you're not a virgin or mere teenager, and nothing is sexier than someone confident in their own skin.

Listen to YOUR body (and your mate's) and allow it to move naturally the way it can. Posing or pursuing bedroom acrobatics which you witnessed actors in their 20's perform on the big screen will make you appear more contrived and damn foolish, and serve as a buzzkill to what would have moved smoothly by keeping it real.

Apply ALL of your well honed senses - from words and touch to fully engulfing the person you are with - via attentiveness and the "present" focus that you were too shy and nervous to deliver when younger. (You're not there to constantly check yourself in the nearby mirror or to check your cellphone between orgasms)!

F*ck like an adult! If one wanted a young and awkward hookup, laden with drama, they would have chosen one. Hence be secure, mature, and let your sweet person experience the allure of your ability to calmy adapt and improvise with any situation that arises, and make them feel comfortable.

MASTER OF THE MIND

MEET MENTALIST SUPERSTAR GERARD SENEHI

M

entalist superstar, motivational speaker, corporate entertainer and entrepreneur Gerard Senehi is an amazing person to be around any way you slice it. Recognized internationally as “The Experimentalist,” he is also difficult to define and defies all categories, evoking mystery and inspiring audiences to be curious about what they can see and what they don’t know. In addition, he is Founder of The Open Future Institute: The QUESTion Project - a non-profit organization founded to expand the role of education.

Gerard creates a captivating environment where audience members can reimagine their ideas of what’s achievable, all the while challenging them to explore possibilities beyond the imagined boundaries. Senehi first became inspired by unseen possibilities at the age of 10 when his friends were drawing cards from a deck and he was able to correctly predict three in a row.

Born in Paris and raised in Switzerland, he became even more enamored with the mysteries of the unknown not long after when his mother had a dream one night about a friend of hers accidentally catching herself on fire that then actually occurred. Already fluent in two languages and proficient in two more by the time he came to the United States at the age of 12, Senehi spent hours in his bedroom exploring magic, mentalism and “becoming fascinated with the things I couldn’t understand.”

As a student at Amherst College in Massachusetts, he continued entertaining his fellow classmates with impossible

feats, however he did not consider performing professionally until the early 2000s following a career as a science, art teacher and social worker. While doing nonprofit work friends persuaded him to give show business a try. He began by calling a local New York talent agency who immediately took him on as a client after seeing his act.

Since then, he has been featured on numerous television programs nationally and internationally, including The Today Show and Ellen. New York magazine once referred to Senehi’s performances as “some sort of religious experience from the sixteenth century” and he has performed privately for everyone from former President Bill Clinton and legendary TV producer Norman Lear.

Many clients in the corporate world also quickly took notice and he is often invited as the keynote presenter for conferences. They often comment on the near impossible challenge of surpassing one of Senehi’s performances for future events. Deutsche Bank once said: “You were the most talked about presenter of our entire conference – and we had some of the most renowned thinkers in the world.”

In addition, Gerard is also the Founder of Open Future Institute and the QUESTion Project, a non-profit organization he founded with his wife in 2014 dedicated to expanding the role of education to teach a new curriculum that helps high school students define who they are and approach their life and future with inspiration and purpose. The QUESTion Class is being taught in public high schools in New York City and has reached over 12,000 students. Gerard is a graduate of Amherst College and received a Master of Education from the University of Massachusetts. He lives in New York City with his wife, Francesca, and regularly convenes a cross-section of the city’s brightest minds in “Evolutionary Salons” to explore questions of human purpose and potential.

FARZANA FOUNDATION

The Farzana Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 private foundation, whose mission is to provide funding for the construction of fresh water wells within the many small Afghan villages, which do not enjoy this basic necessity of everyday life.

Connect @thefarzanafoundation www.thefarzanafoundation.com

On November 29th, 2022, the Farzana Foundation held its Inaugural Gala in Manhattan at the Apostle's Ballroom, which was well-attended by notable entrepreneurs, anchors, actresses, artists, models, and fashion designers, including emcee C-King, three-time Emmy awardwinning anchor and two-time New York Times best-selling author Rita Cosby, fashion designer/supermodel Avadora Mimouni, and fashion designer Elie Balleh.

The evening included a buffet dinner, fashion show featuring looks by designer Diana Mahrach and makeup and hair artist Donna Sousa, and a silent auction featuring exquisite artworks by artist Tatyana Horoshko, Gretchen Olga Schwartz and Vill E. Wright. Sponsors included Empire Rockefeller vodka, Quint Capital, and La Mila Catering & Events. 100% of funds raised went to the funding water wells in the region of Herat, Afghanistan.

Since 2017, Farzana’s family has provided funding for more than 61 freshwater wells in the area surrounding Farzana’s birth city, Herat, located in the Northwestern parts of the country near the border with Iran, where Farzana spent the first nine years of her life. This has enabled families living in this area to enjoy this basic necessity most readily. While each of these wells provides waters to hundreds of families, there is a great need to construct many more. Those who do not have a freshwater well in their village must frequently travel great distances on foot and physically carry back heavy containers of water for their families. As a mother of three, Farzana recognizes the difficulties one experiences as a parent under normal conditions let alone an untenable environment where one has little supply of basic necessities, such as water.

Farzana feels particularly passionate about this project since her own life experiences closely parallel challenges that unfolded in Afghanistan. After the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, she was subjected to terrifying war and bloodshed over a two-year period, during which members of her nuclear family were murdered by the invading forces. Many of her surviving family were forced to flee the country or face death, although some remained to face the aftermath. Farzana’s harrowing experience inspired her determination to create a more palatable situation for those who remain in Afghanistan. As an

advocate for women's rights and as a survivor of domestic violence, Farzana is deeply troubled by the subordination and general abuse experienced by women under the current regime and tirelessly supports justice in the area.

Farzana is a passionate and accomplished veteran of the healthcare service industry, who, for the first fifteen years of her career, worked as a senior registered nurse at some of the most prestigious hospitals in the city of Hamburg, Germany, where her family finally settled after fleeing the ravages of war in her birth country of Afghanistan. In 2011, Farzana moved to the US, where she shifted her focus from medicine to becoming a full-time skincare specialist (NY licensed aesthetician) and celebrity makeup-artist.

STACEY ABRAHAMS Spotlight on Native New Yorkers’ Second Act

I’m a freelance writer by trade, former stayat-home mom, breast cancer survivor, and entrepreneur. Besides writing, I love to explore my creativity through flower arranging. I embarked on my entrepreneurial second act as an Independent Consultant with Rodan + Fields® six years ago. With my children grown, I was ready to dive back into work. As a stay-at-home parent, I quickly discovered my options were limited; so, when a friend began to share the premium skincare brand, I was curious.

While I’d never considered direct selling, I knew I needed something of my own. I jumped in, saw a remarkable change in my skin, and started to share this anti-aging brand and the opportunity to work from anywhere. In my fifties, I immersed myself in the ins and outs of social media where I have successfully built a loyal customer base

and growing team including an Emmy-award winning producer and my very own sister. I am living proof that it’s never to late to learn something new.

In 2020, during the pandemic, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Struggling with the emotional and physical challenges of cancer treatment including hair loss, weight gain, and chronic migraines, I barely recognized myself inside and out. When I looked in the mirror, nothing seemed familiar except for the youthful glow of my skin. At that moment in time, I realized that these transformative products and this opportunity were so much more than skincare.

Cura Collective

Three Leading Ladies Campaigning for Empowerment, Equality and Prosperity

ura" translates simply to "care" and the empowering meaning represents a unique opportunity for the making of systematic change in America today. Such lofty goals were born at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. A trio of friends, Lizzie Asher, Casey Kohlberg and Laura Day-Webb, recognized the dire needed that faced all of us, and more acutely the frontline workers. Cura began as a vehicle to help those who had once saved the lives of both Lizzie Asher and Laura Day-Webb. Their aim was to assist the overwhelmed nurses, technicians and doctors facing the ravages of the virus. However, they wanted to not simply provide for hospital workers but to do so in a way that could help the rest of the surrounding community. Cura launched a program to help direct funds they raised to restaurants and keep them open preparing warm meals for frontline workers thus providing an economic safety net for restaurant workers.

Lizzie Asher - After graduating from Harvard Law School, Lizzie Asher worked at a premiere New York law firm specializing in corporate law. Today Lizzie is the President of Macchu Pisco LLC, a woman-owned and operated spirits company that was the first such company to

implement fair trade standards in the Pisco Valley of Peru. Lizzie also serves on the Board of Save Venice and chairs the endowment she and her husband created at City Squash, a non-profit working with Latino children in the Bronx. Equally close to her heart is Lizzie's contribution as a board member of Columbia Presbyterian's ECMO Family Advisory Board, where she gives back to the ICU team that brought her back to life following a pulmonary embolism and complete organ failure.

Casey Kohlberg - Casey Kohlberg is a Writer, Producer and Philanthropist based in New York. Casey has worked in a variety of roles across the fashion, media, and film industries, most recently as a video producer, in addition to her philanthropic work. She has written for numerous outlets including Allure, The Evening Standard, Harper’s Bazaar Arabia and is currently working on finishing her first novel and her first screenplay. She serves at the Chair of the Young Friends of Save Venice, and is a member of the Frick Young Fellows steering committee. In addition, she serves as Vice President of the Camalotte Foundation, a private family foundation focusing on arts, education, women’s health and climate change issues.

Laura Day Webb - Laura Day Webb holds a Master's in Art Business from Sotheby's Institute of Art and is Director of Programming, Events, and Partnerships for High Line Nine Galleries in Chelsea. In addition, Laura is the Content Manager for Friend of the Artist and Development Officer for Patron Circle and Gifts at The Immigrant Artist Biennial. Alongside her roles, Laura is an independent curator and art consultant whose practice focuses predominantly outside the Western canon on artists who have historically been overlooked and underrepresented. She is Co-Founder of The Royal Versailles Ball, The White Cross Ball, Co-Chair of The Winter Show's Young Collectors Night, serves on the steering committee for the Young Friends of Save Venice, and is a Board Member of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

Now, in 2023, the non-profit is dedicated to rolling out its Women's Initiative. As the founders discussed the next phase of the evolution of the organization, they realized that all the touch points with all the various organizations with whom they had worked had been women. It had been women at every intersection that had led to expansion of meals, expansion geographically and expansion of purpose. Hence, Cura is aiming to amplify the voices of other women leaders as well as undertake women-centered causes.

Principally amongst those is the Voluntary Intoxication Loophole. The group is committed to raising much needed awareness to this safety issue that impacts women and the LBGQT+ community. Currently, in

New York State, rape laws state that if a victim became intoxicated on their own and is later assaulted, then that willing intoxication is equated with consent. This means that the attacker cannot be charged with rape as the rape laws do not apply. This legal loophole means assaulter’s walk free since New York State continues to place blame of the attack on the victims.

Currently, Cura has programmed educational events on this issue during the Spring as the state legislature is considering revising the language to be able to provide legal recourse to victims. Bill S.4555 has been introduced by State Sen Fernandez for consideration. This Bill has had a history of gaining sponsorship, but for years it has languished, failing to be adopted and sent to the Governor for signature for it to become law. At the moment, Cura is promoting a petition to correct this egregious loophole. Cura is aware that this is the state of the law not just in New York State but across 37 other states in the country, surprisingly states such as North Carolina and Arkansas have far more progressive laws than New York.

Danna Pratte is a formidable woman with a clear vision for her wellness brands, a devotion to clean living, and an ability to share her passions globally.

Before wellness was considered to be cool, Pratte noticed “a huge gap” in the wellness space for those needing extra help and she has been successfully filling that niche for more than 25 years. Her number one aim is: “helping people achieve their wellness goals.”

Her Phoenix-based company NBPure is a multi-milliondollar global supplement business with Pratte leading the way as an extremely hands-on CEO. The company makes natural, effective, and convenient foundations for wellness, starting with digestive health.

The products are the end result of staying with the core values of the company. As such, NBPure only uses 100 percent all-natural, non-GMO, thoughtful ingredients. As a

result, there is nothing in the products that is not intended to serve the purpose of the product.

“Having the opportunity to be involved in this company with so many great people and to have so much impact on so many lives is amazing,” she said. “I absolutely love it.”

“Our customers trust us to know that they are getting the best formula for the best result. We only use formulations, processes, and ingredients that maintain the highest quality,” she said. “We are creating a team and a foundation that can grow and expand and always reflect these core values.”

“I WANT THEM TO KNOW HOW IMPORTANT YOUR HEALTH IS BECAUSE, WITHOUT IT, IT IS DIFFICULT TO BE MOTIVATED TO PURSUE YOUR DREAMS AND PASSIONS.”

In 2019, Pratte also became Co-founder and CEO of The Candidly, a wellness brand for women who “sort of hate wellness brands” with the goal of creating content for women over 40 who want practical solutions to their lives.

The inspiration for The Candidly was not finding the kind of content that resonated with women like herself and in two years the site has garnered attention from the Whole30 Creator and Founder, Melissa Urban, The Gottman Institute, and others.

When asked why the health/wellness space is such a good fit, Pratte eagerly responded. “I simply love it. I was first introduced to nutrition and supplements in the late 1990s, and that’s where I found my passion,” she explained. “I felt like this was what I was meant to do.”

Living her best life, and helping others do the same is her reason for jumping out of bed each morning. “I’m happy that I was educated about this early so I can pass this on to my three now adult sons,” Pratte said.

“I want them to know how important your health is because, without it, it is difficult to be motivated to pursue your dreams and passions.”

She said that running a corporation makes the work/family balance more than difficult, but because hers is a family business she would often bring her sons (Jonathan, Jackson, and Jared) to work so they could see first-hand what she was building.

“I wanted my boys to be included in both my failures and my successes. I wanted them to know what I was working toward and how it affected them.”

When it comes to living by the edicts of her health/wellness brand, this is something that Pratte takes very seriously, especially when it comes to her fitness routine, healthy eating, and travel. Everything positively impacts her personal wellness and that of NBPure.

For Pratte, exercise is one of the most important routines you can have for health and longevity, and she certainly walks the walk and talks the talk. “Exercise gives you a clear mind, reduces stress, and can positively affect mood.”

As such, she does something active every day. “The key is to find something fun that you enjoy doing. For me, that’s walking, boxing, and weightlifting. I enjoy mixing it up.”

Pratte also makes it a point to eat clean. I start the day with some kind of shake – I mix it up with protein, fiber, fruit, greens, and nut milk.”

She also tries not to eat a lot of packaged or processed foods. “It’s about being smart about what you are putting in your body. For me, exercise, what you eat, and how you spend your time are a good equation to having good longevity and a healthy life span.”

Another aspect of her personal, and business life, is traveling to new places, exploring cultures, and meeting the people there. “I like looking at the local ingredients that are used and getting inspiration for ingredients we can use in our products.”

Pratte is excited about continuing to reach more people who are looking for information, products, and solutions that can help them live their best lives. An important part of her mission – and the mission of NBPure, is to continue to educate people about wellness.

“We are living in a time when people want to be healthy, they want great, quality products that are proven to work and they want solutions from companies that are honest and conscientious about things like their individual health, family health, global health,” explained Pratte.

“We want this to be a brand without borders,” she said, “because we all share many of the same goals of living and sustaining a healthy, amazing, incredible life.”

FRANCESCO’S FOUNDATION LAUNCHED TO HELP PREVENT TEENAGE SUICIDE

Francesco’s Foundation has been created to help prevent teenage suicide through providing financial support for education in schools, where the focus will be on prevention of all types of bullying including and in particular that of the LGBTQIA+ community, education about the risks of teenagers engaging in dangerous activities on-line, education about the risks of leaving firearms unsecured with teenagers in the house - all of which contribute to heightening risks of teenage suicide.

Seventeen-year-old Francesco took his life with an unsecured shotgun at 2.00 am on October 21st, 2021 on a warm October evening on a moonlit beach in the Hamptons. He was discovered by the police after a call from a school friend. He had to be identified by his dentist - so devastating is the destruction from a shotgun suicide. No parent should ever have to live with that image.

The aftermath of his death has devastated his two mothers, who lived apart, family and friends from Winchester College in the UK and his latest school, The Stony Brook Prep School. Some close young friends have had mental breakdowns and

were unable to return to their studies-all these lives will be severely affected forever-such was the love that they all had for Francesco. For his parents the grief is unimaginable and a life sentence.

Prior to Francesco’s unexpected death he had a very exciting future ahead of him. For a seventeen-year-old boy he had already accomplished a lot-gaining entry to Winchester College in the UK, amongst the top high schools in the world, he had played the violin at both Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center, was an accomplished sailor, very popular with students and teachers alike. He had a great sense of humor and a zest for life. He was an honors and straight A student and had gained an SAT score in the top 99th percentile. He was very excited about an interview at Amherst, only two days after he took his life. He had no history of depression, drug or alcohol use.

Francesco was open about his sexuality & had confided in everyone but his family. First with his girlfriend in Ireland, then more recently with his boyfriend & with all his school friends in the UK & USA. His only mistake had been in divulging his

questioning sexuality to school friends in the USA & the last few weeks of his life was the target of spiteful, malicious lies, gay slurs and ridicule due to his sexual orientation. One night he was unable to take any more and he had a very uncharacteristic night of recklessness and although he had not set out to end his life that night he did.

Francesco’s Foundation has been set up by Francesco’s mother, Diana and her partner, Jennifer to honor the memory of Francesco and to help reduce the terrible risk of teenage suicide by providing financial help for charities investing in the education of teenage mental health.

Francesco’s Foundation’s is a 501c(3) registered charity whose mission is to promote hope and prevent teen suicide. The Organization has a holistic vision for how to achieve this goal and provide grants to a range of organizations and individuals. Francesco’s Foundation partner with organizations that work to end online and offline bullying of LGBTQ teens, increase access to mental health and other supportive services, promote awareness of best practices for firearm storage, and more. In addition, the Charity also provide grants for supportive services and college tuition.

A major new report from the CDC published in February 2023 shows that there has been a huge increase in teenage suicide, especially amongst girls and the LGBTQ community. The report shows that one in four teenagers identifying as lesbian, bisexual or gay attempted suicide in the first half of 2021. Nearly 50% of teenagers identifying as lesbian, gay or bisexual seriously considered suicide in the same time frame. One in three teenage girls reported seriously considering suicide.

Gun violence is now the leading cause of death in children 0-19 years in the United States. Nearly half of those gun deaths are by suicide. The foundation aims to work towards introducing legislation regarding the safe storage of sporting shotguns - those that are not intended for self-defense but for sport, and therefore not protected by the second amendment. This legislation would pertain particularly when there are minors in the same house a shotgun is stored.

Gaming sites like Discord rank amongst the top five apps or platforms for content flagged by its algorithms for severe violence, bullying, sexual content and suicide ideation. Most parents have no idea their children are engaging in such dangerous activities.

Diana Cochran and her partner, Jennifer Allsop are working tirelessly to make changes at schools to protect the mental health of teenagers and help prevent more unnecessary teenage suicides. They are working to make significant changes to the country with the help of Board members.

Their efforts echo the social issues raised by the president in his 2023 State of The Union Address where President Biden said, “Let’s do more on mental health, especially for our children. When millions of young people are struggling with bullying, violence and trauma we owe them greater access to mental health care at school.”

The foundation has set the date for an inaugural fundraiser this September 2023 in partnership with AspenOut.

CHILDSPLAY INTERNATIONAL

NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION

Childsplay International (CPI) is a nonprofit based in New York that helps vulnerable children around the world realize the benefits of play – like learning new skills, becoming socially adept, developing physical strength, and expressing one’s feelings through art and storytelling.

While we are not educators or therapists, we believe that play can be educational and therapeutic. We’ve demonstrated this in hardscrabble refugee camps, remote mountain villages, and in countries disrupted by social strife, poverty, and disease (including HIV/AIDS, which has orphaned so many children in Kenya). In Haiti, Peru, Pakistan, Ghana, India, Kenya, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, we work with local teachers and leaders to promote sustainable, culturally appropriate programs that enhance kids’ lives.

CPI’s track record goes back over a decade. We have been written up in the humanitarian magazine, Living City. We have attracted phenomenal people to our Advisory Board – for example, Mara Krachevsky of Harvard’s Project Zero and Dr. Jean-Elie Gilles, a leading authority on Haitian history and culture who is Jacmel’s representative to UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network. Currently we are working with Dr. Susan Linn, an internationally recognized expert on the theory of play whose books are translated into languages such as Korean and Chinese. Susan is helping us create webinars that will help teachers integrate puppetry into the classroom, enabling kids to use puppets in everyday activities such as show-and-tell.

We share our experience freely, and have made available detailed instructional manuals on how to organize storytelling events and maskmaking workshops. An all-girls school in the Democratic Republic of Congo has incorporated our Storytelling Program into their extracurricular activities.

We partner with complementary organizations, such as Malaika and Lift Up the Vulnerable, so that we can reach an even larger constituency and extend our resources.

We identify local experts, and work with them intensively. The latest example is in Haiti, where we are establishing a sustainable mask-making workshop under the direction of Dider Civil, a renowned professional mask-maker. For the first time, girls will be included in top-tier mask-

making instruction, and all the kids will learn a culturally relevant skill that could lead to permanent employment. In a troubled place like Haiti, these are major accomplishments. If all goes as planned, Didier will help us bring these workshops to countries in Africa, where mask-making is also part of traditional culture. One important effect of our work, apart from directly helping kids, is that we help to preserve local cultures from encroaching, digital homogeneity.

ANNIE WATT AGENCY’S THIRD ANNUAL "IMPROMPTU PORTRAITS — ONE NIGHT ONLY"

FUNDRAISING EXHIBITION AT THE COLONY HOTEL, PALM BEACH

114 Metropolitan Magazine | metmagny.com 25A

One of the hottest tickets in town, the Annie Watt Agency held their 3rd annual “Impromptu Portraits - One Night Only” Fundraising Exhibition in Palm Beach.

Many were invited on Tuesday, April 18th, and many more wanted to be. Why? To be on the guest list for this private cocktail party in and around The Colony Hotel Solarium signaled the unofficial end of the social season. It also signified that you were photographed by Annie and her team of photographers this season.

On the philanthropic side, Annie was known in Manhattan for her various charity contributions and donations of her time or percentage of the proceeds from print sales. Her “paying it forward” tradition has continued since becoming a full-time Palm Beach resident. Annie holds this annual fundraising bash with support from The Colony owners Sarah and Andrew Wetenhall.

April 2023 115

This year, Honoree Fashion Icon Iris Apfel was in attendance, selecting the Police and Fire Foundation and the Palm Beach Police Department as the recipients of the proceeds from the exhibition’s print sales. In addition to the 200+ guests, Palm Beach Police Chief Nicholas P. Caristo, as well as other members of the police department were in attendance. For it to be such a resounding success, Annie had terrific support from her Event Manager, Alexandra-Dana Gusita, and a fantastic team of society photographers, videographers, social media, and visual creators who were active on-site throughout the whole event.

Located inside the Solarium, over 600 photos were on exhibit, showcasing events and parties, as well as portraits of some wellknown celebrities includingTom Hanks, Tommy Hilfiger, Jane Fonda, Barbara Walters, James Earl Jones, Candice Bergan, Sylvester Stallone,

Michael Douglas, Catherine ZetaJones, to name a few, alongside with, of course, many photos of the honored guest Iris Apfel.

Besides her “megaWatt” smile, what makes Annie so special is that for almost two decades, Annie has been known as the goto social photographer of the Old Guard and those who one day will be. Besides Palm Beach, Annie Watt Agency has photographers in NYC, the Hamptons, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, and London.

The Annie Watt Agency brings impressive talent and provides images for promotion, public relations, marketing, social media content, and personal enjoyment.

All photos are available for purchase both at the event and after the party ends online through Annie’s website, www.AnnieWattAgency.com

THE IDEAL SCHOOL OF MANHATTAN’S “MOVING OUR WORLD” GALA RAISED OVER $230,000

The 18th Annual Fundraiser Hosted by Award-Winning Journalist Genevieve Shaw-Brown Honored Social Justice & Disability Leaders Judith Heumann, Heidi Latsky, Charles Imohiosen, Kathryn Russell-Brown & NY Secretary of State Robert Rodriguez

Award-winning journalist and author Genevieve ShawBrown hosted the 18th annual IDEAL School of Manhattan Gala, “Moving Our World,” at Pier 60 in New York City on February 27, 2023. The Gala, which drew over 325 guests, raised more than $230,000 for the city’s first and only independent K-12+ inclusion school.

This year’s event honored the work of disability rights icon Judith Heumann, influential leader in physically integrated dance Heidi Latsky, Charles Imohiosen, President and CEO of The Andrew Goodman Foundation, N.Y. Secretary of State Robert Rodriquez, and Katheryn Russell-Brown, a social scientist, professor of law, and director of the Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations at the University of Florida Law School. Each of the honorees shared how they connected with IDEAL students during a visit to the school last year at its first Civil Rights Community Day. Heumann, who was not able to travel, sent a video that was played during the event.

“Inclusion and social justice cannot be practiced only when it is convenient, or it’s easy,” said Shaw-Brown, whose son is a student at IDEAL. “This is because putting it into practice day in and day out isn’t always easy - but it is always right.”

Entertainment was provided by recording artist and disability rights activist Lachi who performed a 15-minute set that included her hit “Dis Education.” While on stage the singer advocated for society to embrace open and frank conversations about disability, along with other aspects of identity and commended IDEAL for its inclusive mission, language, and emphasis on social justice.

IDEAL’s Board president, Jay Eisenhofer, and Head of School, Janet Wolfe, addressed the guests and explained the importance of the Gala and fundraising for independent schools, bridging the gap between tuition and operating costs. Wolfe welcomed Upper School music students to the stage, who brought the crowd to its feet with their rendition of the Amy Winehouse classic, “Valerie.”

. The IDEAL Gala Committee was led by co-chairs Rachel and Rob McQueen, along with Committee members Grace Kaynor, Christine Mickletz, and Tracy Nixon. During the event, Alexander Gorlin and Quncie Williams of Alexander Gorlin Architects presented their vision for The IDEAL School’s new building at 5 Hanover Square and provided guests with a model and renderings of the space. MIKAIL AKAR BRINGS UNBELIEVABLE ART EXHIBITION TO NEW YORK CITY

YOUNG ARTIST IMPRESSES THE NEW YORK ART SCENE

Wonderkind and art prodigy Mikail Akar is making waves in the art world at the tender age of just 10 years old. The talented creator already is a bona fide painter with works found worldwide and showcasing in numerous exhibitions around the globe. His colorful work appeals to lovers of contemporary art as the prodigy draws his inspiration from famed contemporary artists including Jackson Pollock, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Gerhard Richter.

His second New York exhibition “UNBELIEVABLE” is on public display now at the Modus10 – Rolf Benz Flagship Store in SoHo until May 31st, 2023 and comprises 23 works on canvas and paper of various sizes and in the price range of $8,000 - $16,000.

Mikail’s art was included as part of the ArtExpo New York Fine Art Fair 2023 at Pier 36 and in recent days Mikail held a live painting session held at dawn at the iconic Empire State Building with graffiti artist Luca.

In addition, Mikail currently has an exhibition at the Grand Hotel Schloss Bensberg, Germany running until May 2023 and in another project Mikail recently custom painted the hood of a $450,000 Rolls-Royce motorcar.

A reception to celebrate “UNBELIEVABLE” was held at the Modus10 – Rolf Benz Flagship Store in SoHo which attracted luminaries from

the arts and New York social scene. Amongst the notable attendees were; Mikail Akar, Kerem Akar, Elvan Akar, Mina Akar, Francis Tan, Vincent Tam, Carmen D’Alessio, Tina Radziwell, George Wayne, Montgomery Frazier, Minnie Osmena, 0H10 M1KE, Cagri Kanver, Marsin Mogielski, Jose Castelo Branco, Sharif Sinclair, Neil Saltzman, Brigitte Segura, Nadja Sayej, Tijana Ibrahimovic

Born in 2012 in Cologne, his career began by chance. For his fourth birthday his parents gave him a small canvas and finger paints simply because they wanted to give him an alternative gift to usual toys he already had. Mikail began his prolific artistic journey at this exact moment, and to this day he paints at his Studio in Cologne, Germany.

His talents were seen in a first painting and his parents fully encouraged him to continue his work. Watching Online video tutorias together Mikail learned certain painting techniques and soon the little artist began to paint nonstop. His introduction into the art world launched shortly after with adult artists wanting to preview his work more and more.

Mikail has already held several exhibitions in cities across Germany including Cologne, Dusseldorf, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, where international art collectors soon became aware of the young artist. This led to other shows in Vienna, Zurich, Istanbul, and New York City.

As a visual artist, Mikail does not want to limit himself to canvases. He recently painted a wreckage part of the Airbus 310, which was exhibited in Cologne/Bonn Airport, and will be exhibited at other international airports in the future.

The young artist also has a philanthropic side and has gained notable attention with his work being auctioned for good causes such as the “Art Helps to Give” campaign. One of his most recent collaborations has been with the mineral water brand, Gerolsteiner with the Mikail Akar Artist Edition, where Mikail’s art was printed on more than 17 million water bottles. Additionally, the painter has also launched charity events in Turkey to help local people during the earthquake in 2020 with the Civil Protection authority AFAD. He has also painted numerous times together with German celebrities such as the Höhner, Laith Al-Deen, Manuel Neuer or Peter Maffay and has appeared on German TV show “Klein Gegen Gross” moderated by Kai Pflaume – one of the highest rated entertainment shows in Germany.

Other projects which Mikail is currently working on include painting a series of three classic cars which will be going on a roadshow in the near future. In addition, he is working to create a 165 ft. (50 meter) long canvas painting for a secret project – watch this space for details.

Despite his adventures as a creative artist, Mikail has remained a normal child, going to school in Cologne and is fully supported by his parents and two siblings.
