It’s wintertime and the holidays are just around the corner. In the blink of the eye we’ll be able to sit by the fire as we watch snow dust the trees and streets outside. While it can seem like a busy time of year, with the rush of holiday shopping and gift giving, it’s really about spending time with loved ones at the end of the day. For this winter issue, we bring you art, food, fashion, and travel. Not to mention, Dr. Kelly Powers, of Fox News, graces our cover with both beauty and brains. You will get an inside look at her dedication to helping others and how she balances her many different areas of success. These cold winter months give New Yorkers a desire to travel, which is why we will take you on an inside look at Art Basel Miami. t m a y s o u n d c r a z y, b u t a d d i n g powdered connective tissue from cows and fish to your morning coffee, smoothies, or oatmeal is the latest trend among the clean-eating crowd. Collagen powder (typically deriving from grass-fed, pasture-raised bovine hides or wild-caught snapper) is loaded with protein and is said to soothe achy joints, improve gut health, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. You may be thinking “how?” and “what is collagen anyway?” Let me explain… What is collagen Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body; it accounts for one-third of the protein in our bodies and 70% of the protein in our skin. It is part of the connective tissue for bones, muscles, blood cells, cartilage, and organs. As we age, our natural production of collagen decreases. Consuming collagen from animal or fish sources may help offset some of that collagen loss that we are experiencing. When we consume collagen powder, our digestive systems break down the proteins into amino acids, which, in turn, are used as building blocks that support collagen production throughout the body. Protein Frappuccino: Ingredients: • ¾ cup organic Cold Brew coffee • ¼ milk of choice (I like unsweetened almond milk) • 1 serving of collagen powder • 8-10 ice cubes
Optional: ground cinnamon or stevia to taste Directions: Add all ingredients to a highspeed blender and pulse until incorporated. In addition adding collagen powder to beverages, this supplement is extremely versatile and can be added to various baked goods without changing their flavor! Grain-free Collagen and Chia Banana Muffins: Ingredients: • 1 ripe banana, mashed • 1 egg • ¼ cup natural almond butter • ½ cup almond flour • 1 serving of collagen powder • 1 Tbsp chia seeds • ½ tsp baking powder • ¼ tsp cinnamon Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350F. 2. Mix wet ingredients in a large bowl. Set aside. 3. Mix dry ingredients in another bowl. Add dry to wet and mix through. 4. Pour mixture into well-greased muffin tins and bake for ~13 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
Bloat Busters BUST BLOAT NATURALLY
t’s officially summertime. That means more time spent outside in the sun with family and friends. That also means less clothing. Whether you are in the best shape of your life, or looking to drop a few pounds, there is nothing more uncomfortable or frustrating than being bloated. Even those who work out regularly and eat a well-balanced diet may struggle from bloating. However, by ingesting the right foods and avoiding those that induce bloat, you will be feeling better and appearing lighter in no time!
My top 4 tips for avoiding bloat: Don’t eat too quickly. Eating too quickly and not thoroughly chewing your food can cause you to swallow air, which leads to bloating. Your meals should last at least 20 minutes. Because digestion begins in the mouth, you can decrease bloating just by simply chewing your food more.

Recording your daily intake and noting how bloated you feel is a great way to pinpoint whether certain foods or beverages are triggers for you individually. It is always best to consult with a physician or registered dietitian for more guidance as well.
6 foods to introduce into your diet: Kefir
This food is rich in potassium, a mineral that plays a role in regulating fluid balance. Potassium-rich foods help counteract the effects of sodium, therefore reducing bloat.
Asparagus Asparagus is often referred to as the “anti-bloating superfood.” Ultimately, it helps you urinate, flushing out excess water and in turn relieving any discomfort and bloat. It also contains prebiotics, which help support the growth of “good” bacteria in the gut. This helps to maintain a healthy balance in your digestive system to prevent and/or reduce flatulence.
Keep a food journal. Although there are some common culprits, bloating

Papain, the enzyme contained in papaya, helps break down proteins in your gastrointestinal system, easing up the digestive process. Also, this tropical fruit has anti-inflammatory properties along with a high fiber content that support a strong digestive tract.
The fizz in carbonated drinks can cause gas to get trapped in your belly. Opt for water with lemon, lime, mint, or cucumber to amp up the flavor without added calories or sugar. Eating high-sodium foods can trigger water retention, which can make you appear more “puffy.” Avoiding sodium isn’t as easy as steering clear of the saltshaker, however. Sodium sneaks its way into most processed and packaged foods (think soups, breads, crackers, and the like), making it very difficult to avoid. When and if you do succumb to salt, increase your water intake to help flush it out.
Probiotic bacteria found in kefir or yogurt help with the digestive process and fight off inflammation. Kefir is easy to tolerate by those sensitive to dairy. Opt for plain or unsweetened versions and sweeten it naturally with fruit.

sToNY BrooK A New Space for a New Chapter By Jody Sokol
ur client always loved driving past the 1941 colonial revival in historic Stony Brook Village, so it was a dream come true when she and her husband finally had the opportunity to buy it. Of course, after moving in, they knew that a lot of work needed to be done. A hideous green carpet covered the bedroom and office floors, while contrasting floral and burgundy striped drapes hung in the windows. After a year of living in the new home, they decided it was time for a fresh start. The bedroom went from drab to fab. Gray grasscloth wallpaper went up over stark white walls. The custom-made bedding was pet-friendly and passed all the catsâ€™ tests. Swivel chairs with textural fabric and soft colors and a faux crocodile leather ottoman provide the perfect spot to enjoy morning coffee. The beautiful rope texture on the mirror adds a nice touch, while the black dresser with leather handles grounds the room. Rattan shades give the windows new life with their warm texture, and the embroidered linen drapes are now the focal point. Once the bedroom was complete, we needed to tackle the adjoining office. Because the rooms connect, the elements in the rooms needed to work together. A soft gray carpet flows throughout the space. Our clients were looking for a way to share the office; he needed room to spread

out his paperwork while she needed space for working on her laptop, so his and hers desks with complimenting styles were added. We designed a custom desk to accommodate his needs and brought in a shagreen leather desk for her. Everyone loved the design on the roman shades so much that it became the focal point in the office. A lucite cart with rattan baskets and some fun starburst accessories brighten up the room. While we were in the midst of this project, our client quit her job to convert her new home into New Yorkâ€™s first Bed & Bike Inn, a bed and breakfast geared toward cyclists. The Stony Brookside is in the perfect location, across the street from the gorgeous Mill Pond Park, backing up to the historic Grist Mill, and just down the road from the Village Center.

etting legendary restaurant maven Matty Sorrentino on the phone is no easy feat. Sorrentino splits what time he does have between his life’s passions- his family, the restaurant business and his personal involvement in numerous charities like Safe Center for battered women and the Guardian Brain Foundation. Matty’s brother Andrew passed from a brain tumor several years ago. “You’ve got to give back and be thankful and grateful,” says Sorrentino, who says his charity work keeps him grounded and focused on what really matters in life,” these are the people that help us we don’t help them they help us.” Helping restaurants survive tough times and grow is the key to Sorrentino’s work as one of the world’s most sought-after restaurant consultants. The roster of critically acclaimed dining establishments he consults for include the extremely successful 388 Restaurant & Lounge in Roslyn, it’s sister restaurant Chris & Tony’s Restaurant & Lounge in Syosset, Ciro’s

in Kings Park among many others. “Social media is big...but Facebook and Instagram don’t grow your business...it creates awareness of your business.” In the restaurant trade, Sorrentino favors old school values over technology when it comes to winning over customers. “Social media is a valuable tool but the first day you open your business is the most important day of your life--even if you have three people come in that day --make them go out happy because they will tell three they will tell six they will tell nine they will tell eighteen...your most important day is your first day in business...you got to make sure that is right.” And when things are going wrong with a restaurant, that’s when Sorrentino steps in to work his magic as a consultant. “It’s very important to listen to people that work--to see what their opinions are... you can’t just say I’m the boss you’re the worker-- no, no, no listen to what people have to say --they will fasttrack telling you about the problems --if five waiters tell you we have a problem with the pepper mills sure enough we have a problem with the pepper mills or maybe the manager
is nasty, you know it’s going to happen--they are going to tell you and then you’ll evaluate.” A fail-safe business tip for any restaurant? “Running any business is tough ...but the best marketing is in-house marketing --give something back...give an after-dinner drink, give cookies and food--besides the kindness and the service and the food --give a little something extra...”it’s just giving back- instead of spending $1000 a week in advertisements --give a thousand dollars of the product to the customer to come back--you know- give it to them. That’s the deal.” That’s just one example of why the Sorrentino name has been synonymous with fine dining and high powered clientele for decades. “treat people how you want to be treated when you go out. You get good food you get good service treat them nice and that’s it... there’s no secret to that just treat people nice...the food talks for itself. “ “ I worry about people - I worry about the service I want everybody to have a good time when they leave those restaurants -- they have to say wow this is a great experience.” Matty learned the ins and outs of the
restaurant trade as a teenager when he started working in the world famous kitchen of Don Peppe- a century old eatery in Queens. “I started working there when I was 15... that was the experience of my life.....the best experience of my life...starting there...learned so much- that’s where I learned a lot of what I know it was the best thing that ever happened to me I dropped out of high-school and i went to work washing dishes at 15 years old ...and I’m still washing dishes.” (laughs) And sharing his knowledge of the industry he loves. Joining the family tradition at Roslyn’s 388 Restaurant & Lounge, is co-owner and head chef Salvatore Sorrentino--named after his beloved Grandfather. “My son- he’s following in his grandfather’s footsteps --taking it to the next level. He runs the kitchen he’s the chef. he loves the kitchen, loves food, loves to create.” Co-owner Chris Tarsi, has helped the Sorrentinos tur ned 388 Restaurant & Lounge into a popular fixture on the Gold Coast’s culinary scene, offering up home-
style Northern and Southern Italian cuisine with such delectable dishes as the Shrimp Oreganata appetizer to the full-sized entrees like Linguine Marechiara and Chicken Scarpiello. Thanks to sublime ambience and an unparalleled menu, the 388 Restaurant & Lounge is redefining family style elegance. Ask Matty his favorite meal. That’s easy: The Zucchini Linguini Alexia -- named after his daughter. As for future goals... “I’m going to open myself up to more consulting and more restaurants open more restaurants ...little smaller units but in areas like Roslyn and north shore area and the gold coast area, Manhattan, Greenwich Ct.” “We’re going to start bringing little units --we’ll cut down the menu a little cut down the size of the restaurant -smaller maybe 100 seat units, 80 seat units --they’ll be manageable and go to the areas that don’t have what we give.” According to Sorrentino, when it comes to opening any sort of restaurant--there are three things to remember- location, location, location. “What I would tell everybody is to
put your business where there aren’t the same sort of businesses --if you are in the pizzeria business don’t go into an area where there’s 20 pizzerias-- look for where there’s a need and that’s where you go.” As the conversation comes to a close, Restaurant guru Matty Sorrentino shares a couple last tidbits before he has to get back to work. He says what makes him most proud is being a father to four children and of having a good reputation in a tough business, “because I work hard, I really work hard to service people.” And for restaurant owners--Matty offers one last tip--don’t be afraid to take some risks with the menu every once in a while. “people are going to come for your food. so you’ve got to have good food, good service, nice clean place- clean is very big --change it up every once and a while -- you go to the same restaurant and you eat the Veal Parmesan all the time --after a couple years you’re going to say what the hell am I eating?-- you’ve got to have diversification--that makes you special.”

This gave the client great comfort; “we want our clients to rely on us whenever they need us.” In addition, twice a year they offer a breakfast seminar for their clients. Offering thought leadership, they cover all different topics that can and do affect the investment landscape, even if it’s not directly related to investment strategies. For example, their most recent breakfast speaker was a former CIA analyst who now works for a non-profit dedicated to studying the issue of terrorism and its proliferation through online and social media channels. This level of service is quite unique and really sets the firm apart from their competitors. Rosenthal and Palleschi also weighed in on the financial status of the US and shared their expectations of what is to come in the markets. Since Trump’s election the S&P 500, Dow and NASDAQ have continually hit new highs and we are in unchartered waters in terms of market highs which, as Rosenthal believes, are being driven by ear nings growth and low interest rates. In terms of market sustainability, the firm expects interest rates to stay relatively low, and the markets to make gains over the longer term. The firm believes that Washington needs to pass pro-growth initiatives such as repatriation of cash held overseas by US companies, as well as a lower tax on the repatriation than under current law. The tax proceeds can then be used to improve infrastructure. In addition, they would like to see tax cuts, especially for the middle class and businesses. Rosenthal shared his view, “if we are to see real economic improvement , any legislation passed should be wary of increasing our over $20 trillion debt,” Thankfully, the FLI Investment
Committee does not predict a recession in the near future and keeps a watchful eye on the economic indicators so that they are prepared when it does happen. The team at First Long Island uses several categories to put together an asset allocation for a client. The categories are: security investments, defensive equities, traditional equities and real estate/private equity. By using this particular matrix, the team customizes asset allocations so that clients are put in a place where their net worth is expected to appreciate while preserving capital. Bscher is planning something special at her Galerie Gmurzynska saying “we always try to surprise people, to do something different, something interesting.” This year Galerie Gmurzynska will present Jean Pigozzi’s new dog series, Charles and Saatchi, at Art Basel. This is the second show that Isabelle has done with Pigozzi and they are set to publish a book about the series together with Damiani and text written by Charles Saatchi. The new photo exhibition dedicated to the pups will be complemented by master works from Yves Klein, Roberto Matta, Robert Indiana and Joan Miro. Highlighted works at the booth include Yves Klein IKB 240 from 1995, Fernand Leger’s Composition à la feuille from 1931 and Miro’s Femme aux 3 cheveux, constellation from 1976. Art Expo Chicago Isabelle showed the work of her friend Christo at the Galerie Gmurzynska booth during the recent EXPO Chicago art fair where she also presented rare pieces by Joan Miró and Fernand Léger. These artists were each selected because they each have a strong connection to the Windy City. Miró had to struggle to find the funding to erect his now-iconic sculpture, “Miró’s Chicago” in the Loop back in 1981. A 1931 Léger piece that Bscher showed is significant because that year marked the artist’s first trip to America, including Chicago. “And Christo famously wrapped Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art in 1969. A sensory experience Antonio Monfreda, who has created exhibitions for Valentino and Fendi, and was creative consultant for the Metropolitan
Museum’s AngloMania exhibit, designed Galerie Gmurzynska’s Chicago booth. “He thinks looking at art is something very intimate, so he wanted to create something that involves all senses,” says Bscher. He created curtains using special fabrics, with custom scents from Santa Maria Novella for a fully sensory experience with the master works. his fall Dianne B. Bernhard, a past President of the National Arts Club, will receive the “Patron of Pastels” Award from the Pastel Society of America for her work supporting young pastel artists. The Society’s 45th Annual exhibition dubbed Enduring Brilliance will open at the National Arts Club on September 5th and run through October 1st. The show will feature 175 artists from 10 countries. During the Hall of Fame ceremony, they will give out $40,000 in prize money to the wining artists. Dianne, who will host a party in honor of the Society’s President. Jimmy Wright on the opening night, lives art in the tradition of Robert Henri, an American painter whose philosophy was that art can be a powerful voice for impacting anything. Art is life, and life is art: they can be one in the same providing a joyous experience of the universe. Knowing that her commitment to the renaissance of the medium would never have an impact if she didn’t do something to transform the way the art world perceived pastel, she contacted many of the most important organizations that juried such competitions and asked, “Why is there no category for pastel?” She learned that often pastel was relegated to a subcategory as if it were inferior to oil or watercolor. She quickly went to work to change this misconception and created a category just for pastels matching the amounts awarded to selected artists in the more traditionally accepted arenas of painting.
Foundation has been leading advocacy for the medium of pastels through monetary a w a rd s i n n a t i o n a l a n d i n t e r n a t i o n a l competitions and patronage of pastel artists. She hopes emerging young artists will take advantage of these opportunities to develop outstanding professional credentials to forward their careers. Dianne recently served as the Director of Fine Arts at The National Arts Club and currently serves as the First Vice President of The Pastel Society of America. Dianne received formal training in art history and business at University of Houston and Yale University, in addition to Interior Design from the New York School of Interior Design. She holds a Masters of Science in Environmental Science and her interest in this topic/condition arose from her earlier studies and subsequent thesis work. Dr. Powers ended up completing a master's project titled: " Environmental & Medical Management of Skeletal Fluorosis in Easter n Africa" and she presented her work at the American Public Health Association national meeting. This condition is secondary to excessive fluoride exposure, via contaminated ground water or secondary to industrial
practices in niche parts of the world. Endemic in Eastern Africa as it occurs naturally in certain water sources and given rural areas inability to defluoridate or have access to technology or other sources, Skeletal Fluorosis is endemic leading to gross boney deformities of the lower extremity, leading to the inability to walk or walk without pain and peripheral neuropathy occurs often simultaneously. The Plaster House is a home in Arusha that enables children, from all over Tanzania, to recover after they have had corrective orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery or neurosurgery for a disability. Dr Powers plans to visit Plaster House and their affiliate hospital, Selian Lutheran Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania to volunteer in 2018. Her plan is to perform surgeries on children with Skeletal Fluorosis and Clubfoot and volunteer at Plaster House as part of their post-op recovery.

The organization is fueled by donors and volunteers who support the operation of mobile medical clinics that deliver free, high-quality vision, dental, and medical services to children, individuals, and families who do not have access or cannot afford a visit to a doctor. Dr Powers was a medical volunteer with Remote Area Medical (RAM) which provides health care to those in underserved populations in the US, particularly Appalachia. Dr Powers spent time in Tennessee treating patients with various lower extremity pathologies, wounds, and infections. Dr. Kelly says that it was her parents that instilled her with a sense of purpose at a young age. "I grew up in Westchester, New York from humble beginnings, my parents gave me endless encouragement and support my whole life. They stressed academics, hard work, personal responsibility, and above all strong values. From an early age, I was told 1) I can accomplish or be anything I want when I grow up and 2) No one is going to hand it to you. Work hard, keep dreaming, stay positive and goal focused and you can make any dream a reality." Throughout her life Dr. Kelly has pursued excellence wherever it has led her. The result: she holds five different academic
and medical diplomas . "I've lived in five U.S. cities, mostly for school (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, DC, and of course NYC). " Recently Powers was recognized as a "Future 40 Under 40" leader in America in politics and business by Maverick PAC for the year of 2017 where they lauded her medical background: When she is not on TV, Dr. Powers spends her time in the operating room as she is a podiatric surgeon, with an emphasis on diabetes, wound care & sports medicine. Dr. Powers completed a General Surgery Inter nship as part of her Podiatric Surgery Residency at Boston University Medical Center. he American culinary landscape is one of endless variety and nuance. Even when preparing traditional dishes, most chefs are able to find a way to insert a cultural flair, making every restaurant a truly unique experience. At Tuome in New York City, Chef Thomas Chen prepares distinctly American meals with an Asian touch that not only taste delicious, but show the many ways a simple meal can be modified and explored. Tuome, located on the East Village, is the creation of Chef Chen, a ChineseAmerican native of New York. After working as an accountant for four years, he left the business in order to pursue a career in the culinary arts. Chef Chen spent years working his way through the ranks of Eleven Madison Park’s kitchen honing his cooking skills while also spending time learning business and commerce in order to properly run a casual neighborhood-style restaurant. Tuome, named after his parents’ pronunciation of his childhood nickname “Tommy,” is Chef Chen’s first restaurant, and it is by all accounts a major success. Tuome is open for dinner on Monday

And in their Mexican culinary scene, two restaurants in particular are now prime destinations for hungry visitors. Whether you go to Rosie’s on East 2nd or Vida Verde on West 55th, you are guaranteed a deliciously vibrant and utterly unique dining experience. Rosie’s, the older of the two restaurants, comes from restaurant veterans Marc Meyer and Vicki Freeman, who have worked together on multiple projects in the past. Meyer serves as Executive Chef for Rosie’s, working alongside chefs Angel Andrade and Chester Gerl to produce a phenomenal and authentic menu. Rosie’s specializes in straightforward Mexican classics prepared using traditional techniques, serving lunch, dinner, and brunch to its guests. Vida Verde’s menu was designed by Chef Hugo Orzoco to bring to mind his hometown of Mazatlan, Mexico, and it certainly succeeds at that. W ith items like their tableside guacamole with pico de gallo, serrano peppers, tostadas and charred tortillas, their refreshing watermelon salad, and their tacos consisting of housemade tortillas filled with a variety of different options, Vida Verde provides an authentic taste of Mexican cuisine. Their drinks are equally spectacular,
using fresh ingredients to create signature cocktails like their Old Town Oaxaca with Añejo tequila, mezcal, moscatel, and cane sugar, and their Vida Verde, with snap pea infused mezcal and tarragon among other ingredients. What lay through the entrance of this discreet hotel is a history synonymous with the golden days of Hollywood. Opening its doors as “ The Colonial House” in 1936, Wertheimer’s hotel swiftly became the prefered playground of the silver screen elites, drawn to the property for its opulent accommodations and for its discretion. Prohibition may have ended three years prior but the good times were far from a close. In true mobster fashion Wertherimer installed a basement casino, speakeasy and brothel. Though the days of underground nightlife have long since left the property the elegance has stayed the same. GM has a legendary history of hospitality in Las Vegas spanning more than forty years. Of the brand’s 14 hotels and resorts, the Delano stands apart as a sophisticated, refreshing alternative to its sister properties. Originally opened as The Hotel at Mandalay Bay back in 2003, it was reimagined as The Delano in 2014 after a top to bottom renovation inspired by the contemporary design of The Delano South Beach. A partnership between MGM and Morgans Hotel Group, the non-smoking, non-gaming 1,117 room all-suite hotel offers the boutique atmosphere and attention to detail that define Morgans properties. It begins with the inviting lobby experience-soft lighting, a cozy coffee and tea bar and friendly staffers with iPads ready to assist with any guest needs. Other thoughtful touches--complimentary flavored water, a rotating shadow box exhibit (currently highlighting vintage cocktail guides) and large mirror ador ned with handwritten inspirational sayings that change every day. ou know that feeling when someone lets you in on a secret? All of a sudden you feel a little sneaky and a little giddy. You’ve just been trusted with some very special information. You now have access to something that few people do and you are now one of the few keepers of this treasured knowledge that was given to you in a whisper, because it was that precious. I live for those moments, especially when I travel: The secret dish that’s not on the menu and has to be ordered in a very specific way; the password that gets you into an underground watering hole to hear the best live, local music; the undisclosed hot spring that’s off the map and way off the tourist trail. I live for those moments-when a local trusts you so much that they’re willing to let you in on one of their city’s secrets. My trip to Montreal felt like one whispered secret after another. It started before I even got there. So I’m waiting in the Delta Sky Lounge for my flight and a Delta representative asks me to follow him. He takes me through a door I’d never noticed before, down a set of stairs

and before I can ask why, he opens another door and there we are on the tarmac—as in, where the planes are. He explains that my plane is now departing from a different terminal and walks me over to a Porsche. Yep, it’s right there on the tarmac too. He opens the passenger door for me and explains, “We do this for VIP’s—Celebrities, Government Officials, and Delta Diamond Club Members who have tight connections. It’s called our Porsche Service.” The last part was uttered just above a whisper. The Delta representative then drives me past a dozen or so planes until we arrive at mine. A private stairway is set up and at the top, is a covert door. “This is how I get on?” I ask, walking up the stairs in disbelief. When we get to the top, he nods and opens the door to the plane. No need to go back into the airport and wait for boarding instructions. Just up the steps and there I was, in my seat sipping champagne before the jet bridge for all the other passengers was even set up. How did I not know about this Porsche Service before? It was a secret. The next one was disclosed about 20 minutes later. This time, not in a whisper. Our pilot announced that our flight from
NYC to Montreal would be 45 minutes. Yes, as in less than an hour. I’ve had commutes from one side of Manhattan to the other that were longer than that. Instead, today, I’m commuting to--what I’ve been told is--a miniature version of Paris which is a little bit different, isn’t it? Next, we arrive at our hotel, Sofitel Montreal Golden Mile, where every staff member we encounter is genuinely smiling and happy to greet us. It became quite clear over the course of our stay that their staff is carefully hand-picked. They truly enjoy hospitality. Again, I found myself questioning how seasoned I actually was as a traveler: How am I not more familiar with this hotel group? I’d obviously come across the brand before, but I had no idea it was such a step above. It’s almost as if it’s been kept a secret. Part of a French multinational hotel group, Sofitel sums up its philosophy in one word: Magnifique--the French word for magnificent--a word that’s synonymous with gorgeous, splendid, lovely, and royal. Nothing could be more true of this hotel and its staff. The Le Renoir restaurant and Le Bar within the hotel were refined down to the detail from the dashing décor and

clever cocktails to the creative menu and elegant dishes. Dessert was no exception. (Psssst, don’t tell anyone, but their Head Pastry Chef, Roland del Monte, renowned for his ice cream, was made a knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit by the French Agricultural Minister and has indulged the sweet teeth of French presidents and other state officials. He wants people to enjoy his creations, not his titles, so that stays between you and me.) That air of charm and French refinement shines throughout the city of Montreal, however I wouldn’t confine it to being “a miniature Paris.” Its flavor is slightly different. There’s a modern flair added to the Old European feel in Montreal that’s magnetic. You get the sense that the city doesn’t want you to just wander in and out of its historic sites and museums. It wants to make sure you’re engaged while you’re there. For example, I was caught by surprise at the Notre Dame Basilica of Montreal by the spectacular multi-media light and music show called Aura. It was, not only stunning by way of its production value, but also by the way it left me with a much deeper appreciation for the architecture and sanctity of the Cathedral itself.
Montreal’s Museum of Fine Arts Museum was another perfect example of the city’s desire to keep you captivated. One minute y o u ’ re l e a r n i n g a b o u t c l a s s i c R e n o i r paintings and the next, you’re diving into “Love is Love,” a daring and exquisite exhibit by French designer, Jean Paul Gaultier. It’s remarkable. Here’s what’s not a secret: My fascination with food. It’s amazing to me how much eating through a city will tell you almost everything about it. In Montreal, that happens right in the streets—open-air farmers markets taken to a whole other level. Not just once a week, but every day, they set-up these elaborate indoor/outdoor markets with colorful, fresh, seasonal produce, artisanal breads, pates, foie gras, soups from scratch, pastries, and the types meats and cheeses that, in New York, you would have to seek out a specialty store to find. Within 15 minutes of being at the market, we put together a charcuterie board that would rival most fine dining restaurants. In Montreal, they simply call it “grocery shopping.” I know. Quick background: The term “Sugar Shack” comes from the Canadian tradition of boiling sap down to maple syrup in a shack out in the countryside. In short, it describes a rustic atmosphere. Get Picard involved and what you have is a renowned chef’s gourmet reinvention of local, traditional, harvest season recipes. Imagine, being out in the peacefulness and fragrance of a gorgeous farm, knowing everything from this land you’re on is being cooked for you elegantly course after course, and you’re being served in a cozy log-cabin like setting—picnic-table style with a front porch outside where the barbeque smoker is within arm’s reach. I was in foodie bliss. The atmosphere, the flavors, everything was so grounded and sophisticated at the same time. One of the best culinary experiences of my life. Apparently, I’m not the only one who feels that way. It can take months to get a reservation. But I assure you, if you plan ahead, it will be a night you will never forget. Sometimes a secret is just too good to keep.

Among the trailblazers of this multi-billion dollar industry, Owen has been working toward this moment for two decades, with outlets like Bloomberg. com recognizing him as “a pioneer of the video gaming industry.” The potential introduction of eSports offers the Olympic Movement potential to fulfill its own Charter that “the practice of sport is a human right”. Whilst many Olympic sports favor young athletes who spend a lifetime preparing with a specialist regime in a national athletic organization, eSports offers a potential democratization and broader participation in being shortlisted to participate. PlayAPI’s Ted Owen emphasized that, “whilst traditional athletic events may involve at most several hundred athletes being shortlisted for a particular event, eSports could potentially involve millions of individuals competing for a spot on their 2024 eSports national Olympic team”.
