Cultural Arts Hip-Hop

Age: 7 - 10

Beginning, Age: 4 - 6 It’s never too early to start dancing! This intro to the basics of hip-hop includes moving to music without inhibition, understanding rhythm and how to move to a beat and taking on choreography in a fun and exciting environment.

Age: 7-10 Every dancer starts with the basics. Students will build confidence, learn to follow directions and memorize choreography. Active listening and participation for 45 minutes is required.

Basic hip-hop vocabulary and the introduction of counting are just a few of the things you’ll learn in this upbeat, high-energy class!

Jazz Jazz, Beginning Age: 6 - 10 Dancers are introduced to jazz technique in a supportive environment, engaging in center floor warm up, which focuses on stretch and strengthening, the basic turns and leaps of across-the-floor activities and center floor combinations, which encourage the use of new skills and the ability to learn choreography.

Students taking the beginning jazz class are encouraged to also participate in a ballet class consistently. Bring your jazz flats and jump into the joy of jazz!

Instructor permission is required for 8-year-old students who have not attended the 6-8 beginning level jazz for a full dance season (fall–spring). Tap, Intermediate Age: 11+ This class is most appropriate for dancers with a minimum of 2+ years of tap experience.

You’ll learn technique in both Broadway and Rhythm tap, building a solid understanding of counting and confidence in picking up and repeating rhythms. This class will challenge and inspire dancers to get their feet moving. *Tap shoes and instructor permission are required.

Senior Company Age: 12+ *Audition required. Senior Company students are required to take the Senior Company Rehearsal, Pre-Pointe, Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary Modern classes. Required classes are held at Tacoma School of the Arts (SOTA). Students are recommended to take ballet three times per week, and should expect to take classes from a variety of instructors to enhance their knowledge and training. Senior Company students are only accepted via an audition process, which consists of teacher recommendation, interview and traditional dance audition.

Junior Company Age: 9 - 12 *Audition required. Junior Company students are required to take the Junior Company Rehearsal, Intermediate 8-12 year old Ballet (2 days/week), and Jazz classes. All required classes are held at Tacoma School of the Arts.

Many Junior Company students opt to enroll in tap or hip-hop in addition to the required classes and are required to either take the One-Week Summer Dance Intensive or weekly classes during the summer as part of their company commitment. During the Dance Intensive Camp, instructors will gauge students and take a practice audition, or students may audition in a more traditional audition setting.

Teacher recommendation is valued highly when considering placement within the company.

Mini Company students are required to take Mini Company Rehearsal and Ballet (2 days/week), on Monday and Saturday, at Tacoma School of the Arts (SOTA). This class backs up to rehearsal time, which is more convenient for parents and children. It is also suggested these students register for the 6-8 year old Jazz class Monday nights at SOTA, but it is not a requirement.

There is not an audition to be part of this group, but parent conference and teacher recommendation is necessary to ensure the student is ready to take this next step.

Specialized and Adaptive Recreation programs work together to provide

sport, social, and recreational opportunities for people of all abilities. This includes a variety of Adaptive Recreation programs serving youth through adult with physical disabilities through activities such as wheelchair basketball, adaptive cycling, goalball, and adaptive youth programs.

And Specialized Recreation programs for people with intellectual disabilities including programs like Special Olympics sports training, camping trips, community based day trips, art and cooking classes, on-going weekly social programs, and special events like the Cinderella Ball. Community members requesting ADA inclusion accommodations are also served by the capable Specialized and Adaptive Recreation staff.

Staff are housed at the STAR Center, but programs and services are delivered County wide.

When you think about it, swimming is like a super power. It makes so much more of the surface of our planet available for you to enjoy! Learn to swim and you’re safer: Puget Sound, the ocean, pools, lakes and streams are everywhere, so it’s good to be able to handle yourself in and around water. Also, water provides about 12 times the resistance of working out on land, with much lower impact: Easy on your joints, great for cardiovascular and respiratory health. If you don’t swim yet, Metro Parks can teach you!

Swimming LEARN-TO-SWIM LESSONS New & Improved!

We start with the student: We meet you where you are so you can develop at your own pace. Build stamina, learn swim strokes, and increase your comfort and safety in, on and around water.

We provide a fun environment where it’s easy to build confidence, make progress and create friendships.

Session lengths for all ages (6 months to adult) and vary from 4 to 8 lessons, M/W, T/Th or Sat only.

Children will be grouped with others in their own agegroup. Preschoolers age 3-5 will progress through four levels and meet benchmark skills along the way. Schoolaged children 6-11 will progress through four levels at their own pace to reach swimming skill goals.

RECREATIONAL SWIM Bring the whole family to the pool for some good clean fun! Safety is always our top priority and we rely on you to help us keep everyone safe: children must be at least age 10 to swim without an adult in the pool area. We will administer a quick swim test to ensure that all children have safe swimming ability. All non-swimmers and children age 6 and under require a supervising adult in the water within arm’s-reach of the child at all times.

FAMILY SWIM The family that swims together… has a lot of fun together! All children must be accompanied by an adult and all non-swimmers and children under age 6 must be within arm’s-reach of an adult at all times, just so we’re sure everyone’s safe.

Youth STEM & Education When school is out, Metro Parks is in! Young people engaged in activities outside of school are more likely to be safe, build healthy relationships, get better grades, and feel good about themselves. Students can experience a sense of belonging and explore their creativity in a safe space with caring and trained staff.

Our programs offer youth an opportunity to take learning beyond the classroom. We focus on building social skills as well as academic; from STEAM learning with Bricks 4 Kidz to the tangible life-long lessons learned in a Safe Sitter class.

When youth have healthy opportunities to play, learn, and grow… the possibilities are endless!
