Publisher’s Notes At the Heart of every issue, METRO strives to bring style and substance. We’ve now partnered with the American Heart Association for 12 years to help raise awareness of heart disease and stroke. The Community Leaders with Heart photo shows just how many leaders in the Tampa Bay community share their passion to fight heart disease and raise funds for research. There is still plenty of Gasparilla fun with the upcoming Gasparilla Arts Festival, Gasparilla Music Festival and Gasparilla International Film Festival. The GMF is hitting a five year milestone and GIFF celebrates 10 years. METRO finds out what sparked these creative festivals and the people behind them. Now is the time to plan for the next escape. METRO recently had the opportunity to visit two luxury properties from the Excellence Group in Mexico; the all-inclusive, all-adult Excellence Riviera Cancun and the family-friendly Finest Playa Mujeres. As St. Petersburg is getting ready to host the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg March 11-13, 2016, METRO had the honor of showcasing the brand new home of Susie Wheldon in METROHome Tour. Tragically, Susie’s husband, Dan Wheldon, who won the St. Petersburg race in 2005 and two Indianapolis 500s, died while racing in 2011. Susie continues to make a home in St. Petersburg for her and their two sons and has spent the last two years building a home in Old Northeast. There are plenty of social and charitable events coming up and METRO is proud to support many of them. Check out www.TampaBayMetro.com for event listings. Enjoy,

New Cirque du Soleil Show “ TORUK” Comes To Tampa Inspired by James Cameron’s movie AVATAR, the new Cirque du Soleil touring show TORUK – The First Flight is coming to the Bay area. The live immersive multimedia experience will captivate audiences with a fusion of cutting-edge visuals, puppetry and stagecraft, buoyed by a soaring cinematic score. In true Cirque du Soleil style, TORUK will capture the imagination and bring Cameron’s vision in Avatar to the touring stage. The story is a mythical tale set thousands of years before the events depicted in the film AVATAR, and before any humans ever set foot on Pandora. The production sets to show the interconnectedness of all living things. When a natural catastrophe threatens to destroy the sacred Tree of Souls, Ralu and Entu, two Omaticaya boys on the brink of adulthood, fearlessly decide to take matters into their own hands. Upon learning that Toruk can help them save the Tree of Souls, they set out, together with their newfound friend Tsyal, on a quest high up in the Floating Mountains to find the mighty red and orange predator that rules the Pandoran sky. Prophecy is fulfilled when a pure soul rises among the clans to ride Toruk for the first time and save the Na’vi from a terrible fate.

TORUK is scheduled at the Amalie Arena for four days and seven performances on March 17 - 20, 2016. For tickets and show schedule visit www.cirquedusoleil.com/toruk.

On the heels of the opening exhibition of Jaume Plensa: Human Landscape at the TMA, there is another exhibition now open too. Public and Private – The Figure Examined: Masterworks from the Kasser Mochary Foundation examines the most universal subjects in art, the human figure. With a focus on the human figure, the exhibition traces social ideas, artistic movements, philosophical and political theories, and stylistic trends by American and European artists from the 19th and 20th century. The exhibition was made possible through one family’s love of the arts. “For me and my parents, collecting art was a family affair,” says Mary Mochary. “From childhood, my mother inspired us to study the civilizations that had preceded ours, while my dad impressed upon us that creativity was a gift to be encouraged and admired. So, collecting works of art, which were the manifestation of both the culture and the creativity of their times, was almost obvious. We are so proud to bring portions of our collections to Tampa for this exhibition.” The exhibition was organized by the Tucson Museum of Art and the Kasser Mochary Art Foundation. “Public and Private – The Figure Examined: Masterworks from the Kasser Mochary Foundation exhibition, is truly a remarkable opportunity to experience a universe of works created by Western European and American artists, beloved for centuries by the art world,” says Michael A. Tomor, PhD, Executive Director at the Tampa Museum of Art. “In one exhibition, the Tampa Bay community can see the works of Renoir, Miró, Cassatt, Gauguin, Dalí, and Rivera, in oil, print, and bronze, among 100 works spanning centuries of artistic creativity. The Kasser Mochary Art Foundation has given this opportunity to the region, and my hope is that everyone takes advantage of this rare opportunity.”

Advance Treatment for Strokes at Florida Hospital According to the American Heart Association (AHA), every minute without treatment during a major stroke, the brain loses 1.9 million neurons, 14 billion synapses, and 7.5 miles of nerve fibers. The quicker a stroke victim can get quality treatment improves the chance for survival and lowers risk for major disability. The AHA recently updated their recommended treatment guidelines for stroke patients to include a device that can pull a stroke-causing clot from the blood vessels in the brain. This treatment, called intracranial mechanical thrombectomy, begins with an incision in the patient’s upper thigh. A small, long tube is threaded through the arteries and veins of the body and is directed into the brain where the clot is. A wire mesh device captures the clot and pulls it out of the body with the tube.
James E. Lefler, MD, Neurointerventional Radiologist at Florida Hospital Tampa
“Treating acute strokes with this procedure has proven to be very effective,” says James Lefler, MD, neurointerventional radiologist and co-director of the Florida Hospital Tampa Comprehensive Stroke Center. “Florida Hospital Tampa has been actively involved in intracranial mechanical thrombectomy since the devices were first on the market in 2012. We are currently one of only a
few hospitals in the Tampa Bay area equipped to perform the procedure.” Florida Hospital Tampa was one of the first in Florida accredited by the Agency for Health Care Administration as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. Discover the Florida Hospital difference at www.InspiredTampaBay.com.

Heart Ball Combines Philanthropy and Fun The 58th annual American Heart Association Tampa Bay Heart Ball is taking things to the next level. Chaired by Trey and Nina Traviesa, the optional black-tie fundraiser is a crossroad of advocating for the American Heart Association’s mission, and razzle-dazzle ambiance, entertainment and auction lots. “The Tampa Bay Heart Ball is one of the American Heart Association’s Top 10 galas in the country and we want to live up to that reputation. This year we are putting tremendous efforts into raising money to fund critical research and community programs, as well as giving guests a night to remember,” said Trey Traviesa, managing partner of V3 Partners, LLC. The Heart Ball’s new location at the Tampa Marriott Waterside, as well as the after-party — which is also onsite — are two of the event’s most-anticipated diversifications. Guests can also look forward to mobile
bidding for the silent auction, and desirable items like a catamaran trip to the British Virgin Islands and a one-week stay at a stunning home in Park City, Utah. “Nina and I are honored to serve as chairs this year,” said Traviesa. “We have beloved family members who have battled heart disease, so we are passionate about raising awareness about the No. 1 killer of Americans, and motivated to take the appropriate steps to live long, healthy lives for our daughters.” The 2015 Heart Ball takes place on April 30 at 6 p.m. The leading sponsors are Ashley Furniture HomeStore, Sykes

Go Red For Women® Tampa Bay Chair Leads by Example Research shows that women who are involved with the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement live healthier lives. The 2016 Go Red For Women Tampa Bay Chair is proof that this statement is true. “I was motivated to join Go Red For Women because my mother has had three heart attacks and I wanted to learn more about what I could do to prevent heart disease,” said Amy Rettig, SVP of Public Affairs at Nielsen. “Since becoming a part of this inspiring movement, I’ve started living the Go Red mission. I’ve gone to my primary doctor to get my numbers checked. I’ve started exercising more and enjoying it. And, toughest of all for me, I’ve chosen to make hearthealthy decisions with my eating.” Rettig and hundreds of other community members will gather at the 2016 Go Red For

Local Together to End Stroke Campaign Recognizes Heroes Stroke Hero, noun: stroke survivors, stroke caregivers, researchers and medical professionals who are dedicated to saving lives from stroke, and individuals who recognized the signs of a stroke and called 9-1-1. Melanie Williams, the Florida Regional President of Verizon, is no stranger to stroke heroes. “My mother had a massive stroke over 10 years ago. My nephew was home with her and, despite her repeatedly telling him not to, he called 9-1-1,” said Williams. Williams’ mother made it to the hospital with little expectation to live. But thanks to the quick actions of her grandson and critical medical care, she is here today. Williams’ nephew became a fire fighter as a result of his experience and his desire to help others. “I am beyond grateful that my nephew acted the way he did and that my mother is with us. I know firsthand how stroke can affect a family, which is part of why Verizon is
in its third year of partnering with the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to prevent, beat and treat stroke, the No. 5 killer of Americans.” In addition to encouraging community members to learn the warning signs of a stroke through the acronym F.A.S.T., Verizon and the American Heart Association are recognizing local stroke heroes. The two organizations will celebrate stroke heroes on a quarterly basis throughout the year, and they are hosting a Stroke Awards Party on Feb. 23. “We are honored to award local lifesavers and stroke survivors,” said Williams. “I invite everyone to become a stroke hero by learning how to spot a stroke F.A.S.T. and calling 9-1-1 at the first sign.”

The American Heart Association and BayCare Bring Blood Pressure Program to Local Worksites
The American Heart Association is fighting to improve the health of all Americans by 20 percent, by the year 2020. While adults’ cholesterol levels, diets and physical activity are getting better, blood pressure is getting slightly worse. Almost 30 percent of Tampa Bay area residents and over four million Floridians have high blood pressure, and many more may be at risk. High blood pressure can increase a person’s chance of heart failure,

heart attack and stroke. To combat this issue, the American Heart Association, with the support of BayCare, is launching a free evidence-based hypertension management program called Check. Change. Control. within local companies in the Tampa Bay area. This initiative will help employees identify, lower and maintain healthy blood pressure levels. “BayCare and the American Heart Association share a mission to improve the health of all we serve,” said Lou Galdieri, the American Heart Association’s My Heart. My Life. Chair and President of Mease Countryside and Mease Dunedin hospitals. “Check. Change. Control. provides local com-

panies with the knowledge and resources to control blood pressure, and it has the ability to greatly improve employees’ quality of life.” Check. Change. Control. uses an online health tracker to empower individuals to take ownership of their cardiovascular health. The program has been introduced in cities around the country. Preliminary results show that 70 percent of those who began the study with blood pressure higher than 150/90, ended up with blood pressure lower than 140/90. “We look forward to seeing the positive impact and results that this program will have on local worksites and our community. There is no better benefit to offer your employees, than helping them have healthier, longer lives,” said Galdieri. For information about high blood pressure, visit www.heart.org/hbp.

Students Get Hands-On with CPR Training
Jefferson High School students learn Hands-Only CPR.
Through funding from a local American Heart Association grant, a sponsorship with All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine, and the generosity of the American Heart Association Tampa Bay Metro Board, every public high school in Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough Counties has received a CPR in Schools Training Kit™. The American Heart Association Tampa Bay Metro Board’s donation is part of their goal to train 150,000 teenagers and adults in Hands-Only™ CPR by 2017. “Our board members are fueled by a passion to improve the health of our community,” said Katie Pemble, American Heart Association Tampa Bay Metro Board Chair. “I am inspired and honored to be a part of a team that has made CPR training a priority.” Cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in the U.S. It can happen anytime, anywhere, and to anyone – even young people. When bystander CPR is immediately performed, a victim’s survival rate can double or even triple. Unfortunately, only 41 percent of people who experience a cardiac arrest at home, work or in public get the immediate help that they need before emergency services arrive. The CPR in Schools kits will create generations of lifesavers by allowing approximately 25,000 local high school students to be trained annually. “It was important for us to team up with the American Heart Association to teach this generation of students the important skills of Hands-Only CPR, as they will then always have the ability to apply them to save someone’s life,” said Dr. Gary Stapleton, division chief of pediatric cardiology at the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Heart Institute. “When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, every second counts as there can be irreversible brain damage after two minutes.
Having more people who have the skills to provide immediate CPR to someone at school, home, or in the community can have a powerful impact on the survival of someone who has a cardiac arrest.”

Bringing AHA Research to the Forefront Study Could Alter Approach to Treating High Blood Pressure This landmark study found that more aggressively treating high blood pressure saved lives. Results showed 43 percent fewer cardiovascular disease-related deaths in patients who dropped their systolic pressure to near 120 – instead of settling for under 140, the target that has long been considered acceptable.
Since 1996, The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association has compiled an annual list of the major advances in heart disease and stroke research. The list is determined by the organization’s volunteer and staff leaders, and is highly anticipated at the end of each year. The extraordinary Top 10 list of 2015 includes everything from revolutionary stent retrievers to treating high blood pressure to examining the impact of lifestyle modifications. “As a longtime volunteer of the American Heart Association, I’m energized
by the organization’s continuous groundbreaking discoveries in cardiovascular research,” said Chuck Sykes, President and CEO of Sykes Enterprises and an American Heart Association Tampa Bay Metro Board Member. “This year, Sykes is hosting several local research events including a symposium that will inform local researchers how to apply for AHA grants. We look forward to supporting the AHA and its key role in advancing life-saving research that has tremendous value.” Below are glimpses of three of the 2015 Top 10 studies.
Lifestyle Studies Underscore Power of Healthy Habits A group of lifestyle studies emphasize the importance of total health to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In addition to healthy eating and regular exercise, these studies show the importance of getting proper sleep and even how regular text messages with encouraging notes about lifestyle changes can improve health. New Drugs Slash Bad Cholesterol How the most disabling strokes are treated is undergoing the biggest transformation in decades after research this year showed dramatic benefits when tiny devices are used to go into the brain and grab large clots. For more information or to read the full studies, visit www.heart.org.
Healthier Workplace: Building a Culture of Health The American Heart Association has created a Healthy Food and Beverage Toolkit that provides practical action steps that are easy to understand and apply to the workplace food environment. A 2010 study showed that improving the
types of foods and beverages served and sold in the workplace positively affected employees’ eating behaviors and resulted in net weight loss.1 The research is clear that eating nutritious foods and eating only enough to meet energy needs can reduce cardiovascular
disease risk and promote wellness. Below are three options you can learn more about by calling the American Heart Association Tampa Bay at 727-563-8006 or downloading the toolkit online at www.Heart.org/FoodWhereUR.

BIOSPINE INSTITUTE Specialties: Orthopedic Spine Surgery
The BioSpine Institute is a private spine surgery practice that provides relief from neck and back pain through advanced minimally invasive surgery. The outpatient surgery center and new patient clinic, both in Tampa’s Westshore District, are the realized vision of two pioneers in the field, Dr. Frank Bono and Dr. James Ronzo. They were committed to building an institute dedicated to a singular purpose: to improve the lives of patients by perfecting the art and science of minimally invasive spine surgery, while providing an unparalleled experience made memorable by attention to every detail, comprehensive communication, and outstanding surgical results.
The vision began almost 15 years ago when, after medical school and additional fellowship training, Dr. James Ronzo and Dr. Frank Bono started a very successful practice in Central Florida, where they made the decision to focus exclusively on minimally invasive spine surgery. This was at a time when the huge majority of spine surgeons were still performing back surgery using the traditional, open method, a highly invasive procedure which led to a long and painful recovery. This new minimally invasive approach meant the entire procedure could be performed through a tiny ž'' incision, which led to less pain, less scarring, and a much faster recovery. Dr. Frank Bono and Dr. James Ronzo have now treated over 35,000
patients and performed over 14,000 minimally invasive surgical procedures. This places them among the most accomplished spine surgeons in the country. Minimally invasive spine surgery is certainly a field where experience matters. In addition to their extensive experience, Dr. Ronzo and Dr. Bono quickly realized through their participation in organizations such as the North American Spine Society that their surgical outcomes were among the best in the nation. They felt compelled to bring this standard of excellence to a new and larger population of patients in Greater Tampa Bay, and so is born the BioSpine Institute, a place where the experience makes all the difference.

ive music and independent films are the focus of two of Tampa’s major annual festivals that fly under the Gasparilla flag and keep the city’s traditional pirate-themed party going through March; but fun and entertainment are just part of what the Gasparilla Music Festival and Suncoast Credit Union Gasparilla International Film Festival (GIFF), are all about. Events that started with a staged pirate invasion and celebratory parade, have expanded under the Gasparilla banner to include a nighttime parade, a two-day event for casual to world class runners and an outdoor art festival that draws hundreds of artists and hundreds of thousands of attendees over a weekend. Ten years ago the film festival premiered here. Five years later, the music festival was added to the event line-up. Without the blast of cannon fire or a barrage of beads, these newcomers are nicely impacting Tampa’s image as a city that, not only celebrates, but also cultivates the arts. While living in New York, Rachel Marks Feinman enjoyed an abundance of cultural activities. Moving back to Tampa made her realize just how much she missed events like the Tribeca Film Festival. “I wanted to enhance the cultural landscape of this city,” said Feinman. “When I talk to people about film festivals they tell me how they go to Sundance or Tribeca. They think they have to leave where they live to have an experience like (a major film festival),” she said. As the president of GIFF, Feinman oversees what has become the largest, in terms of total

films screened, and best attended film festival within the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area. While attendance continues to grow each year, the event is also gaining stature within the film industry. For the 2016 festival, a record-breaking number of submissions — more than 850 films — were received. Filmmakers screening movies here have brokered distribution deals. Newcomers trying to break into the industry access networking opportunities to further their careers. Designed to create interactive experiences for the audience that go beyond simply watching movies, GIFF enables attendees to meet directors, attend Q&A sessions with talent, or cheer celebrities, as they cross the red carpet. “We’ve been ranked among the world’s top 50 festivals for the past three years by MovieMaker Magazine,” said Feinman. “A lot of that is due to how well the filmmakers are treated. We lack pretentiousness. We take ourselves seriously, but not too seriously.” While Florida’s film industry struggles to compete for movies lured to other locations by financial incentives this state lacks, Feinman believes the festival offers Tampa a chance to show itself off to industry representatives and connect them with the people and resources they can tap into here. “We have some excellent talent,” said Feinman. “This is such a clean and stable industry. Part of our mission is to keep talent from leaving Tampa.”

ifth generation Tampa native, David Cox, recalls conversations shared over drinks with friends and business associates who debated what industries should be courted to fuel Tampa’s economy, as well as, what type of events could energize this community and kick up its cool factor. It took the all-volunteer group made up of some 80 like-minded individuals, drawn from all walks of life, an estimated 18 months to plan, fund, organize and implement the inaugural Gasparilla Music Festival. The timing proved ideal due to downtown Tampa’s newly developed Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, which provided a perfect urban setting, for the festival to feature its mix of local talent and nationally recognized headliners. “We knew we could do a signature event there. Having that as our venue was a huge part of our success,” Cox said. “It is the only place in the world with panoramic views of the University of Tampa, the cylindrical Sykes building, the Tampa Museum of Art and downtown. No where else in the world has a stretch of riverfront like ours.” As attendance climbs and tickets sell out, organizers hope to broaden the event’s appeal by offering an even more diverse musical mix. This year, a new stage located in downtown
Tampa’s MacDill Park, will be devoted to an all Latin music line-up on March 13. “That music is a part of Tampa’s culture and we want to showcase it more this year,” said Cox. “We want to be Tampa-focused and serve this community. We want to try to stay eclectic while letting the event continue to evolve.” As the festival’s executive director, a position Cox filled in August to carry on the work Ty Rodriguez had handled for the previous two years, he oversees year-round activities that include collecting and distributing donated musical instruments to local schools and providing paying gigs for local talent at various venues, including the city’s streetcars where passengers can enjoy live music on select dates. While the focus will still remain on enhancing Tampa’s image through the festival and supporting aspiring musicians with roots here, Cox feels there is potential to grow to 100,000 in attendance by its 10th year, a goal that would require more room and a longer run. “Bigger is not necessarily better and we still want to keep it a great event,” said Cox. “We don’t have the answers yet, but we are constantly exploring ways it can get better.” M

n the heart of south Tampa lies a stunning home with views of Hillsborough Bay and the feeling of serenity with its private location. The Ballast Point area has hosted generations of Tampa families since the 1920s. Located on South Gordon Avenue, the home is tucked away, but is located just minutes from downtown Tampa, nearby restaurants, shopping and Tampa International Airport. The original Bungalow-style, two story home was constructed in 1934 with three bedrooms and three baths. Throughout the years, the estate-sized property has been expanded and integrated to the natural, oak-filled property and mature landscaping. A private road leads directly to the lush lawns, rambling gardens and sparkling waters of the Bay. The classic design and large windows fills the home

The oversized, waterfront porch offers a perfect welcome or a spot to entertain or just relax. The wood deck, down at the waters edge, offers a wonderful place to watch the sunrise. Throughout the home are beautifully polished hardwood floors downstairs, along with ceramic tile in the baths and carpet in some rooms. The gourmet kitchen opens to a large window-walled family room and eat-in area. Wood cabinets and generous counter space provide all the necessary storage space to satisfy any chef. Fine Lines New Wheldon Family Home in St. Petersburg By Mary Lou Janson

Inspirations for the interior of Susie Wheldon’s custom-designed home were drawn from such diverse sources as the white-washed interior brick walls of a local business, to the checkered flag associated with motor sports. Similar bricks salvaged from a Milwaukee building that have been plastered and painted, add depth and dimension to one wall of her master bedroom. Black and white squares reminiscent of the racing pennant pattern the floor of an upstairs bathroom. Unconventional ideas and elements and multi-level angles are apparent throughout the two-story, 3,600-squarefoot home that combines modern design with minimal dÊcor, contrasts light and dark colors and features textured wood floors, sleek metal surfaces and smooth marble counters. A desire to live in the family-friendly community of St. Petersburg’s Historic Old Northeast neighborhood, meant not only moving from nearby Snell Isle, but designing and building a new home. The mother of two admired the red brick-lined streets and American Craftsmen-style bungalows that define the centrally located district, but needed a more practical floor plan to accommodate individual bedrooms for sons Sebastian, 7, and Oliver, 5, space for entertaining guests, an office where Wheldon could manage professional and personal matters and a modest pool.

“I knew we wanted to be in this neighborhood,” she said. “There are a lot of great homes with character here, but I had to have a functional space that would work for all of us. We really had to think outside of the box, but once I saw the plans I fell in love with it.” To meet those needs within the confines of a single, narrow lot, she worked closely with Jimmy Brattain of Design Works Florida, who created the flowing floor plan and eye-catching architecture. Elaine Pauley of Urban Style Interiors of Indianapolis, met with Wheldon every few months to help select the ideal interior fixtures, features and furnishings, that contribute to the “classy, modern industrial” décor. “The house is my version of clean, white, simple architecture,” said Brattain. The front door appears to open directly into the house but instead accesses the pool and patio area that sports views of blue skies, twinkling stars and the multi-level gabled roof. “The inspiration for the courtyard is Santorini (city in Greece). I liked the different levels of roofs that make the courtyard feel like you are in a small village,” said Brattain. “It’s a playful take on architecture that you can’t see from the street.”
TBM_FM16(50-58)6_HOME.qxp_Home 2/14/16 5:22 PM Page 58
Lots of windows, many well above eye level, high ceilings, French doors and an open floor plan on the ground level, provide ample space for gatherings of friends and family. Separate, but spacious, rooms above the living area offer a sense of sanctuary that is enhanced by the soothing, cooling colors incorporated throughout the rooms. Framed black and white family photos displayed on the second floor and small canvases of original paintings by family friends, relatives and others closely connected with Wheldon, exhibited in another stairwell, put a personal stamp on the premises that make the home feel all that much more warm and welcoming. The Wheldon family has called St. Petersburg home for years. Dan Wheldon was a professional race car driver who died doing what he loved at age 33. A red brick bearing his autograph is embedded among the white bricks in a bedroom. A fabric featuring the British flag of the U.K. native’s homeland cover an armchair that is located in the children’s upstairs play area. “Those help to keep us all together,” said Susie Wheldon. From her home office overlooking the front yard, Wheldon manages the Dan Wheldon Foundation she created to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. M

Healthy Greens with organicgirl Organicgirl brings specialty greens mainstream with two new salad blends — Sweet Pea and PEPPERGREENS, both featuring greens you could previously only get in season at the farmers market. The Sweet Pea mix features delicate, fresh sweet pea shoots that add a satisfying crunch and hint of juicy sweetness to a salad. It also packs the power of plant protein — 5 grams per serving. PEPPERGREENS is a flavor-charged blend that adds a spicy kick to salad. It features special tender-leaf greens like green mustard (a special variety that has a wasabi-like heat), peppery arugula, red mustard and cress (the spiciest of them all!). In addition, organicgirl has a line of fresh salad love vinaigrettes. The dressings are made with whole, organic ingredients — real lemons, tomatoes, kale, farm fresh cheese and herbs. The line features healthier versions of favorites like caesar and white cheddar and new flavors like lemon agave, kale parmesan, fresh tomato Italian and pomegranate balsamic. The organicgirl products are available at grocery stores and natural food markets nationwide, including Whole Foods and Publix Super Markets, and many neighborhood markets in Tampa. Mexico For Romance and Family Memories Excellence Riviera Cancun and Finest Playa Mujeres | By Ronda M. Parag
T
he direct flight into Cancun from Orlando International Airport makes sense when trying to get to Mexico from Tampa. The hour and twenty minute drive to Orlando is well worth not having to change planes to get to the tropical paradise of Riviera Maya, located between Playa del Carmen and Cancun. The crystal blue waters and sugar white sands are calling. We left on the Jet Blue 8 a.m. flight and by just after 10 a.m., we were headed to the luxury Excellence Riviera Cancun. Arrange for a car service in advance, for the 30 minute ride to the all-adult, all-inclusive luxury resort. For families with children, the Finest Playa Mujeres will certainly delight and is a 20 minute ride from the airport.
Excellence Riviera Cancun Upon entering the gated resort, the friendly staff welcomes guests with a cold cloth and a cocktail to soothe the weary travelers. The all-suite property has a variety of views and oversized floor plans. All the rooms have a mini-refrigerator and stocked liquor that is replenished daily. Room service is available 24-7. For an even greater luxury experience, guests can upgrade to The Excellence Club. Perks include private check-in, welcome flowers and newspaper, Private Club beach and lounge area, buffet and cocktails in a private bar and one Aqua Wellness treatment per day. Relax with a cocktail at one of the six sparkling pools on the property. A friendly bartender will gladly serve a frozen margarita or piĂąa colada at the swim up bar. Some of the pools are more

secluded, while the main pool offers plenty of activities including water aerobics or a Zumba lesson. Couples all around are celebrating romance with either a honeymoon or anniversary. Special touches such as door sashes with an Anniversary or Just Married sash are placed across the room doors. The property is a place where guests return year after year. Choose from nine international restaurants including Mexican, Indian, Spanish, Italian and French, which are as authentic as possible with delicious cuisine. No reservations are needed, it is first come, first serve. At the Mexican restaurant, Agave, a roving Mariachi band and singer kept us entertained. The evening dinner was capped off by the server creating a delicious show of flaming Mexican coffee. Entertainment is planned nightly, or simply enjoy drinks at one of the 11 bars. With Excellence all-inclusive resort, guests will have plenty of choices and best of all, eat and drink as much as you want. There is even a restaurant that specializes in steak and lobster. Experience pure relaxation at Mille, The Spa. The tranquil setting of the open air lobby is nestled among lush landscaping and the Aqua Wellness hydrotherapy circuit. The healing power of waters and varying temperatures and pressures are designed to create an inner peace; believe me it works. The neck jets, stone walks, ice room, cold plunge and warm pools, seek to bring the body back into balance. Salon and other spa services including massage and facials are available.

I double up by combining leisure and work. I also have my own marketing and catering company, A & A Hospitality Services. M: What are the hottest bar conversations? G: While we are suppose to “hear and not hear” it is fun to watch all the Tinder dates happening. M: Who is the most interesting person you’ve served at the bar? G: Derek Jeter was in last week, but I don’t get star struck. The arts have magic for me, so I’d have to say the folks involved in the production of Lion King, from the make-up and costume designers, to the cast and musicians from the orchestra pit. M: What is your favorite cocktail? G: The Mint Julep – the simplest of cocktails with three ingredients - sugar, bourbon and mint. It is great for Derby Day or a cool fall or winter day. M: Favorite city to drink, other than Tampa? G: There is no place like New Orleans. M

Celebrity Chef Melds Rustic Farmhouse with Modern Casino Glitz Marc Murphy’s Grey Salt | By Ronda M. Parag
G
et a taste of the Big Apple in Tampa with the new Mediterranean-inspired restaurant by celebrity chef, Marc Murphy. Inside the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Marc Murphy has brought his latest concept to the Bay area. The rustic farmhouse meets modern-twist interior, sets the tone for a casual, yet refined, dining experience. The interior of Grey Salt is clean and reminiscent of easier, simpler times. Large jars of bright yellow lemons decorate one wall inside the restaurant, along with chopped wood for the grill and other spice filled jars. The exposed kitchen allows guests to watch the culinary team create the delicious dishes

and watch the rotisserie go around. While the Bay area has cultivated many local celebrity chefs, it now attracts national chefs, as well. The latest addition being New York-based, Chef Marc Murphy. The culinary bar is certainly being raised, much to the Bay area foodies delight. “Tampa is a great location for my Mediterranean inspired grill because of the close proximity to the Gulf and its amazing seafood,” says Murphy. “The climate is also very similar to the Mediterranean where I grew up, spending time in Italy and France. Tampa was the perfect location and I’m looking forward to creating an oasis for people to enjoy. Tampa has a fantastic community of restaurants and I am excited to be part of
www.TampaBayMetro.com
it. I’m so impressed with the dining scene and I look forward to joining such a talented group of chefs.” In addition to his restaurant and catering group, Murphy appears regularly on The Food Network, along with other guest chef TV appearances. His debut cookbook: Season with Authority: Confident Home Cooking was released last year. The Seminole Hard Rock established its culinary chops with Council Oak Steakhouse and Grey Salt is the newest addition to add to the dining scene. A focus on locally sourced ingredients including local seafood, along with flatbreads, handmade pastas and rotisserie and grilled meats fill the menu. The selection on cheese and charcuterie boards make for a great starter, displayed nicely with pickled vegetables, marcona almonds – almost a meal in itself. One of General Manager Thomas Allen’s favorite dishes is the housemade pasta bolognese and I couldn’t agree more. Cooked to perfection, the red sauce with skirt steak topped the cooked to al dente pasta and rich ricotta cheese. He shared that once the deluxe pasta maker arrived, all the chefs were so busy ‘playing’, he had to remind them to get to work. Another delicious dish is the spinach ricotta gnudi topped with brown butter and sage. For a side, try the lentils which were hearty and tasty, not mushy at all. Other entrees include wood-grilled prime skirt steak, snapper, grouper, lamb chops and roasted duck. The chocolate hazelnut tart served with pine nut gelato and a cappuccino is worth saving room for to end the meal. The round, curved bar near the entrance is a great place to grab a pre-dinner handcrafted cocktail, glass of wine or craft beer. chic and contemporary interior invites guests inside at the new Doc B’s located on Bay Street in International Plaza. The menu delights diners in the Tampa Bay area with a focus on fresh salads and veggies, along with comfort food favorites of burgers, and sandwiches served with french fries, sweet potato fries, coleslaw or quinoa salad. The restaurant was created by Craig Bernstein, who opened the first Doc B’s in 2013, naming the restaurants after his late father, Dr. Bernstein. The concept hails from Chicago with two locations, and Tampa being the first in Florida, with a Fort Lauderdale location opening later this year. The large communal table in the bar area or the tucked away booths, offer options to be social or secluded. The bar is surrounded by TVs to catch the scores of the latest games and enjoy a speciality

A great starter is the Housemade Guacamole. It is fresh and flavorful served with chips. The menu has a balance of healthier choices including a Quinoa Kitchen Salad made with Quinoa, Marcona almonds, mint, radish & feta topped with crispy leeks or the Brussel Sprout Salad, along with more comfort, Very Special Entrees. A personal favorite is the Wok Out Bowl® where you choose a Protein – shrimp, tofu or salmon, chicken or beef; Base – sticky brown rice, lo mein noodles or quinoa; Sauce – sesame teriyaki or spicy thai; all served in a bowl with veggies and cashews. with mashed potatoes. Be sure to save room for Rob’s Double Decker Chocolate Cake that is completely decadent and served with a cold glass of milk. The menu changes quarterly to make the most of seasonal ingredients. While every effort is made to source locally, Doc B’s does seek out the highest quality ingredients including fresh tuna from Hawaii, lo mein noodles from San Fransisco and salmon from the Faroe Islands. Chicken and beef entrees are always made with hormone and antibiotic free meats. Everything is made in-house, every day including the salad dressings and desserts. M
