There are a few more months to enter the city of Paris in 1929 and discover the art, friendship and artist expressions of more than 20 artists at the current exhibition on view at the Dalí Museum.

Midnight in Paris: Surrealism at the Crossroads, 1929, profiles the work, friendship and clashes of more than 20 avant-garde artists of the era, from the painters Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, to sculptors Hans Arp and Alexander Calder, to filmmakers Germaine Dulac and Luis Buñuel. Man Ray, the great American artist, and perhaps the first paparazzo, made splendid photo portraits of these and other Surrealists, turning them into international celebrities.

“The year 1929 in Paris was one of those rare moments when the artists of the time knew they were reshaping the world,” said Dr. Hank Hine, executive director of The Dalí. “Are we in such a time again? The Dalí Museum invites you to consider this, and to discover the provocative conversations, dreams and friendships among a deeply experimental and influential group of artists who called Paris their creative home.”

Designed as an inspiring stroll through the streets of Paris, the exhibition evokes concepts of Dream, Desire, Freedom, Love and Revolution.

The exhibition includes approximately 65 works in a variety of media drawn largely from the collection of the Musée national d’art moderne in Paris. The exhibition is curated by Dr. William Jeffett, chief curator of special exhibitions at The Dalí Museum, and Didier Ottinger, deputy director of the Musée national d’art moderne at the Centre Pompidou with the collaboration of Marie Sarré.

M: What can people expect from this year’s tournament?

W: The ability to watch the world’s finest professional golfers in a beautiful setting while enjoying a fun atmosphere with great food, beverages, social activities, music and family fun. We have something for everyone. The tournament is a “happening” and “can’t miss event” in Tampa Bay. M: What do you do for fun?

PGA TOUR® Valspar Championship Tournament Director It’s so much more than a golf tournament. It’s a concert with country artist Chris Young, a happy hour spot with great dining and cocktails, a fan zone with the Family Fun Zone, which will feature interactive activities to keep the kids entertained, and the Valspar BLOCK PARTY, where fans can relax and refresh while experiencing Tiny Homes and play lawn games.

The Valspar Championship PGA TOUR® event, which is hosted at Innisbrook Resort, is happening on March 16 - 22, 2020 and attracts over 130,000 patrons, 250 corporate partners and 2,000 volunteers. Last year alone, the Valspar tournament generated $2,274,686 for more than 75 charities, including medical charities, youth programs, veterans groups and many others. METRO had a chance to chat with Tournament Director Tracy West.

METRO: Are you a golfer? How did you get started in the game of golf?

W: I enjoy walking in the beauty of Tampa Bay, watching current and old movies, volunteering on numerous boards and, of course, golfing.

M: How do you relax?

TRACY WEST: I am an enthusiastic golfer even though I don’t have time to play as often as I would like. I did not start to play until after college. To begin with, it was an activity to do with my husband and family, but I fast learned that it was a business asset to be able to play. Now, it is something I enjoy for exercise, for spending time with friends and family, and spending quality time with our tournament sponsors.

M: Where are you from, and how long have you lived in Tampa Bay? W: I grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, along the Canadian border in the Upper Peninsula … I’m a “Yooper.” After school, I spent many years in Grand Rapids, the Twin

M: Favorite place to vacation?

W: I like a variety of types of vacations: sightseeing in Europe, golf trips, mountains, Caribbean. I love to see new places.

But my favorite place is our family cabin in Brimley, Michigan, along Lake Superior.

Wonderful memories, beautiful beach and water, and a chance to spend time with my family and childhood friends.

M: What will you do when Valspar is over this year?

W: First and foremost, thank our dedicated volunteers, sponsors and Copperheads/CopperMugs. Then head to The Masters, and work on the Wells Fargo Championship and 3M Open (which both events I assist in managing, too). And working with my team to plan the next year’s Valspar Championship.

This is a 365-day operation!

Pride & Passion 2020 Neon Jungle The 15th annual Pride & Passion presented by Wells Fargo is set to glow on Saturday, April 18, at the Tampa Museum of Art, celebrating diversity and inclusion in the Tampa Bay community.

This year’s chair, Nicholas Catania, anticipates an eclectic and energy-filled evening with this year’s theme, NEON JUNGLE, featuring jaw-dropping entertainment, mouth-watering hors d’oeuvres, and a premium open bar. Junior League Of Tampa Helps Break Poverty Cycle Through Its Diaper Bank Program One in three American families reports experiencing diaper need. Diaper need is the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep a baby clean, dry and healthy.

Diapers can cost upwards of $80 per month per child. There are no state or federal child safety-net programs that allocate dollars specifically for diapers.

Without them, children cannot attend daycare, preventing caregivers from working or going to school. For some families, diapers are the linchpin in the cycle of poverty.

The Junior League of Tampa Diaper Bank serves to combat diaper need within Hillsborough County by supplying diapers, wipes, and diaper cream to programs in our community. Since 2018, The Junior

Children Across Borders Hosts Cricket Cup When: January 12, 2020 Where: Steinbrenner Field, Tampa The annual CAB Cricket Cup, a familyfriendly fundraiser event was held to benefit Children Across Borders. Colors and Textiles Create Contemporary Condo Living

T

he lure of living in downtown St. Petersburg, and enjoying the amenities of the recently completed, luxury ONE condominium tower, enticed the Fleming family, Lucas, Tara and daughter Avary, to make a bold move and sell their longtime Snell Isle home.

Finishing out and furnishing the interior of their newly purchased three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bath living space emboldened them, even more, to move away from the traditional Mediterranean design of their previous dwelling, to embrace a more contemporary living environment featuring contrasting colors, texturized layers and customized light fixtures.

recalls the residence featured a floor plan and flooring, but little else when she began what became a year-long project. Designing with the moods the family wanted to evoke, and combining that vision with an artistic value that would clearly differentiate their space from any others, Gilmore strived to give her clients something “they never knew could exist.”

“We are a very artistically driven design company, and I am passionate about color, patterns and unique elements,” Gilmore said. “We wanted to take this modern condo shell space and use furniture, colors and textiles to create a super modern, chic look, with a traditional undertone. The end result was very fashion forward.”

The full service design firm worked with DHM Construction Services to coordinate custom cabinetry and finishing touches to the powder room.

Elements exclusively crafted for the condo included the kitchen’s geometric backsplash incorporating three shades of marble, draperies and custom furniture like the plush, tufted ottoman placed within the raspberry colored walls of the study.

Only a few of the family’s furnishings transitioned to the new home, but paintings provided a very personal connection with their family tree.

family furniture and artwork into her own designs. That truly made our home feel as though it was ours,” said Tara Fleming. “We like spaces that live into their purpose. For example, our study was a bright, yet warm, color. The kitchen was vibrant and balanced to create a feeling of excitement and comfort for when we entertain. The powder room provided an opportunity to be creative with a mixture of mediums that maintain an interest while there, and our bedrooms favor a quieter tone.”

The monochromatic color scheme and subtle shadings highlighting the kitchen, dining and living areas co-habitat quite nicely with the richly saturated study. Floaty, airy light fixtures keep the overall look from appearing too fussy. And the mix of matte black, brass and antique silver fixtures add longevity to the design look, preventing it from quickly becoming dated.

For the Flemings, the final results gave them a new perspective that perfectly suited their personal preferences and aesthetic.

“Lisa has the gift of being able to really stretch our ability to see design in a very different way, and trust that it will all be incredibly beautiful in the end,” Tara Fleming added.

One of the ways Gilmore added a sense of fun to the overall feel was by introducing patterned fabrics and wallpaper motifs that imply movement and motion.

“They (the Flemings) were great team players who were pushed out of their comfort zone and allowed us to flex our creative muscles,” Gilmore said.

“They thought outside of the boundaries of traditional living, which made this project a huge success.”

tep back in time to feel the nostalgic past of Old Florida on the east coast of Florida in Cocoa Beach. A recent stay at the Westgate Cooca Beach Resort & Pier has me yearning to go back and enjoy a beach weekend filled with family, fun and sun.

Located about two hours from Tampa by car, and an hour east of Orlando, Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort offers a great family-friendly beachside retreat. The resorts accommodations are two-bedroom, two bath suites, complete with a living room and full kitchen that allow everyone a bit of room to spread out. The interior rooms offer great views of Wakulla Falls Waterpark, a kids splash zone and lazy river. The lazy river is relaxing loop that allows kids, and kids-at-heart, to float round and round.

Brooke Bennett 3-time Olympic Gold Medalist

A

three-time Olympic gold medalist, wife, mom of two amazing boys and owner of Brooke Bennett Swim School keeps Brooke Bennett busy. When asked what inspires Bennett she says that it has always been her grandfather, who taught her to swim and got her into swimming. “Knowing that he’s always been proud of me, and keeping him proud, even since his passing in 1996,” said Bennett. “Most definitely my boys, Bas (5) and Bjorn (2) and my husband, who is always there to support all of my crazy goals and wishes.”

Bennett is getting away from the pool more, and taking on the joys of open water training. In addition to swimming, she trains by prone paddling and beach running. “Along with cardio, I also love keeping a routine of Bikram yoga at least once a week,” said Bennett. “Let’s not forget chasing around two very active boys.”

“In turning 40 this year, I want to complete the “triple crown” of open water swimming by the time I’m 50,” said Bennett. “My goal is to swim the English Channel, Catalina Channel and Swim around Manhattan.”

As a mother of two children born with congenital heart defects, Mitchell has long had an unmatched passion for the mission of the American Heart Association. Patience please. Expect results over time, not overnight.

Short term success is fine — and certainly satisfying — but setting long term goals, and giving your body time to transition from where it was, to where it is going is for the best. This isn’t a competition, or a race, but a new way to gain control of your body’s physical fitness, and keep building on those improvements. Engage a personal trainer for consistent training times that encompass a few months, not just a handful of hours or a couple of weeks. Take time to develop new habits and achieve noticeable results.

Other factors to keep in mind: • Do their rates fit your budget? If you want to work with a trainer for an hour, twice weekly over a four-month period, that can really add up. But the results you gain in terms of having a stronger, healthier body, feeling more energetic and being able to be more active may far outweigh the costs.

• You found the perfect person, but they only have 5 a.m. Mondays and 7 p.m. Thursdays open on their client calendar. A great trainer may be in high demand. You can ask them to refer you to another colleague. Meanwhile clients come and go, so you could also keep checking back in hopes more convenient times open up, that will accommodate your schedule.

• Where you train may impact who you train with.

Trainers offer a variety of ways, and places, to work out.

Maybe you are a member of a gym, where they are allowed to conduct personal training sessions. Or you have an in-home gym that offers you the utmost convenience, and privacy, but the trainer you like best lives too far away to make it feasible for them to commute. Some trainers are more mobile than others so if you like the idea of meeting them at some other site, such as a park or the beach, they should provide equipment for you to use. ake your next workout a whole lot more fun by picking up some cheerleading pom poms to perform a lively routine combining easy to follow choreography with upper body movements.

Pom Pom Pow! is a new form of aerobic exercise that features not-too-fancy footwork with arm-toning activities, for an overall workout.

Originated in Tampa by a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL cheerleader, classes last for one-hour and newcomers can try their first class for free.

In addition to sending heart rates up and keeping muscles moving, this exercise is also a more “cheer-ful” way to work out, according to its founder.

“You can’t dance and not smile,” said Lizette Guerra, creator of Pom Pom Pow! “It’s really a happy workout.”

Created by the Tampa native, who is also a former dance teacher, group exercise instructor and currently a personal trainer, the energizing, dance-inspired exercise combines uptempo music with a variety of side-to-side stepping, stationary movements and low impact legwork that can consume up to 300 to 500 calories per class.

Each class can easily conform to all ability levels. For example, no dance experience is needed, every fitness level — from beginner to more experienced — is welcome and movements can be adapted for all. No jumps or leaps for you? No problem!

“This is a workout designed to provide you with less pain, but more gain,” she added.

With nearly 30 years in the fitness industry to her credit, Guerra knows that not everyone wants to workout, but we all want to have a good time.

T ips to Improve Wellness and Prevent Stroke

Strokes don’t discriminate, according to the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization devoted to fighting cardiovascular disease and stroke. They can happen to anyone, at any age.

About 1 in 4 people worldwide will have a stroke in their lifetime. However, up to 80 percent of first strokes may be prevented.

“Healthy habits can protect and improve brain function and lower your stroke risk,” said Dr. Lee Schwamm, MD, American Stroke Association volunteer chairman and executive vice chairman, department of neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The American Stroke Association offers these five tips to help reduce your risk of stroke and maintain mental sharpness as you age: Keep blood pressure in mind and under control.

High blood pressure is the No. 1 controllable risk factor for stroke. Work with your doctor to manage your blood pressure and get it into a healthy range (under 120 over 80).

Eat colorful fruits and veggies. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables can lower blood pressure over time, which may help reduce your stroke risk. Some fruits and vegetables, such as mangos, avocados and blueberries, are especially rich in vitamins and minerals that improve brain function and heart health.

Rest up. Getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night can improve brain function, both today and long-term. A soothing bedtime routine and avoiding screen time before bed can increase the quality of

sleep you’re able to get. Sleep-related breathing issues may also increase stroke risk, so seek treatment right away if you suspect sleep apnea or similar problems.

Meditate. Emerging science shows practicing mindfulness and being aware of your breathing may reduce blood pressure. A quick way to be mindful anytime is to pause, notice your breath and observe details in your surroundings.

Take a hike. Getting active activates brain cells, encouraging them to grow and connect more efficiently.

“These simple suggestions are great for everyone to follow, even if you don’t think you’re likely to have a stroke,” Schwamm said. “While many adults don’t think they are at risk for stroke or reduced brain function, the reality is that nearly half of all adults in America have high blood pressure, and untreated high blood pressure is one of the most common causes of stroke and also causes up to 60 percent of dementia.”

Boost Your Heart Smarts Debunking the Top 10 Myths about Cardiovascular Disease

February is American Heart Month and the perfect time to remind the Tampa Bay community to focus on heart health. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of both men and women and claims more lives each year than all forms of cancer combined. Despite its prevalence, there can be a lot of mystery surrounding heart disease. And relying on false assumptions can be dangerous to your heart. Let’s set the record straight on some common myths: Myth #1: “I’m too young to worry about heart disease.”

As early as childhood and adolescence, plaque can start accumulating in the arteries and later lead to clogged arteries. Even young and middle-aged people can develop heart problems — especially now that obesity, type 2 diabetes and other risk factors are becoming more common at a younger age.

Myth #2: “I’d know if I had high blood pressure because there would be warning signs.”

High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” because you don’t usually know you have it. The way to know if you have high blood pressure is to check your numbers with a simple blood pressure test. Early treatment of high

blood pressure is critical because, if left untreated, it can cause heart attack, stroke, kidney damage and other serious health problems.

Myth #3: “I’ll know when I’m having a heart attack because I’ll have chest pain.”

Not necessarily. Although it’s common to have chest pain or discomfort, a heart attack may cause subtle symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea, feeling lightheaded, and pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the jaw, neck or back. Too often these symptoms are ignored or dismissed. Even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, call 911.

Myth #4: “Diabetes won’t threaten my heart as long as I take my medication.”

Treating diabetes can help reduce your risk for or delay the development of cardiovascular diseases. But even when blood sugar levels are under control, you’re still at increased risk for heart disease and stroke. That’s because the risk factors that contribute to diabetes onset also make you more likely to develop cardiovascular disease.

Myth #5: “Heart disease runs in my family, so there’s nothing I can do to prevent it.”

Although people with a family history of heart disease

are at higher risk, you can take steps to dramatically reduce your risk. Create an action plan to keep your heart healthy by tackling these to-dos: get active; control cholesterol; eat better; manage blood pressure; maintain a healthy weight; control blood sugar; and stop smoking.

Myth #6: “I don’t need to have my cholesterol checked until I’m middle-aged.”

The American Heart Association recommends you start getting your cholesterol checked every 5 years starting at age 20. It’s a good idea to start having a cholesterol test even earlier if your family has a history of heart disease. You can help yourself by eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

Myth #7: “Heart failure means the heart stops beating.”

The heart suddenly stops beating during cardiac arrest, not heart failure. With heart failure, the heart keeps working, but it doesn’t pump blood as well as it should. It can cause shortness of breath, swelling in the feet and ankles or persistent coughing and wheezing. Both types of heart events warrant immediate medical attention.

Myth #8: “This pain in my legs must be a sign of aging.

I’m sure it has nothing to do with my heart.”

Leg pain felt in the muscles could be a sign of a

condition called peripheral artery disease, which results from blocked arteries in the legs caused by plaque buildup. The risk for heart attack or stroke increases for people with PAD so this recurring issue should be discussed with your doctor immediately.

Myth #9: “My heart is beating really fast. I must be having a heart attack.”

Some variation in your heart rate is normal. Most of the time, a change in your heartbeat is nothing to worry about but sometimes, it can be a sign of arrhythmia, an abnormal or irregular heartbeat. Most arrhythmias are harmless, but some can last long enough to impact how well the heart works. Always discuss with your doctor.

Myth #10: “I should avoid exercise after having a heart attack.”

As soon as possible, get moving with a doctorapproved plan. Research shows that heart attack survivors who are regularly physically active and make other heart-healthy changes live longer than those who don’t. The American Heart Association recommends at least 2.5 hours of moderate intensity physical activity each week for overall cardiovascular health.

The Health Of Our Nation’s Youth Is In Jeopardy.

The U.S. surgeon general has raised an alarm regarding the rise in e-cigarette use among the nation’s youth, saying it has increased “at a rate of epidemic proportions.” The latest data show that more than 1 in 4 high school students are using e-cigarettes (compared to approximately 1 in 10 just two years ago).

In recent years, significant strides have been taken to improve health in our youth when it comes to clean indoor air, healthy eating and drinking guidelines, and anti-tobacco campaigns. In fact, the number of adolescents and teens who smoke cigarettes had reached a historic low.

However, with the recent surge of vaping and e-cigarettes use, tobacco companies are once again spending millions targeting youth and addicting a new generation to nicotine, reversing the decades long progress that has been made in reducing youth tobacco use.

Why has vaping become so rampant in a population that had historically said no to cigarettes? Many adolescents believe that e-cigarettes are safe and do not contain nicotine. However, one e-cigarette refill pod can contain as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes and kids are sometimes vaping 2-4 pods a day. In addition to the dangers of nicotine — a neurotoxin shown to impact cognition and emotional control in growing brains — studies have found chemicals and toxins in some e-cigarettes

include formaldehyde and metals like nickel and lead.

Some of the chemicals have been shown to harm lung tissue, heart muscle cells, the lining cells of blood vessels, and the cells we need for blood clotting after injury.

In November 2019, the American Heart Association launched their fight against Big Vape with the #QuitLying campaign. The campaign is a three-pronged initiative involving research, policy advocacy and youth activation intended to urgently address the epidemic of youth e-cigarette use. The $20 million investment in the “End the Lies Youth Vaping and Nicotine Research Initiative,” which will focus on studying the impact of youth vaping and nicotine use. To build off this bold, nationwide, studentfocused initiative, the American Heart Association, students, and schools coast-to-coast are demanding accountability by the e-cigarette industry for its lies to youth about vaping and nicotine addiction.

Despite the fact that national legislation has been passed raising the age of sale for tobacco products to 21, there is still much to be done as we continue to combat this mounting epidemic. What can you do to help?

Advocate for strong, comprehensive tobacco policies; talk with the young people in your life about the dangers of smoking and vaping; and join the American Heart Association’s fight at www.QuitLying.org.

2. Brown spots, known as café au-lait macules, are indicators of higher risk for melanomas and multiple other internal cancers affecting different organs.

3. Red patches, or port wine like stains, may be associated with cardiac disease, especially cardiac arrhythmia (heart racing), that can only be demonstrated under stress conditions.

4. Face bumps, are not always acne or rosacea. They can represent fibrous papules, or wart like conditions, can indicate higher risk for certain cancers of the gastrointestinal tract or the breast.

During the last year, Dr. Vasiloudes has presented the AAD’s pioneering observations

and research to local conferences, like at the Hillsborough County Pediatric Society, Saint Joseph’s Hospital Pediatric Grand Rounds, USF Department of Dermatology Grand Rounds, International Congress of Dermatology, Milano and at the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance conference in Chicago.

Dr. Manning went on to work as a Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator for multiple medical and surgical eye care studies focusing on the optimization of patients’ visual outcomes with cataract and lens implant surgery. He has delivered presentations at national and international Ophthalmology meetings and has co-authored the textbook, Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology, that has been described

by The Journal of the American Medical Association as “the current standard in comprehensive ophthalmology textbooks.”
