High Energy, Human Art Cirque du Soleil’s “BAZZAR”

Awe-inspiring acts from the famed Cirque du Soleil will return to Florida’s St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay region. The fourth stop on the North American tour of BAZZAR will showcase high energy, skilled acrobatics, dynamic stunts and exciting performances that epitomize the company’s legacy.

The iconic Big Top is to be showcased at the Tropicana Field stadium from February 22 - March 24, 2024. BAZZAR’s creation originated in 2018, and first toured India and the Middle East. In September of 2022, it relaunched, touring first in Brazil and then other parts of South America before coming to the U.S. Since Cirque du Soleil’s creation in 1984, more than 378 million people have been captivated by the pieces of live performance art that have been displayed. The Canadian company has grown throughout the years into a 4,000

employee strong business based on inspiration. The companies steadfast dedication to creating moments that last well past the

last act, is what has made this concept such a success.

An international cast of 35 performers and musicians will showcase

their extraordinary talents in BAZZAR. Contortionists, acrobatic bike, duo roller skate, duo trapeze, aerial rope, hair suspension, fire manipulation and slackline will all be showcased. For the first time in Cirque du Soleil history, Mallakhamb will be introduced into the creative mix of the show.

This amazing comeback to the area is one for the books and shouldn’t be missed. METRO: How did you decide on Tampa?

Le Roots: We are both 4th generation Tampa natives, and even though we left Tampa, we always knew we would put down roots here.

It’s home, and as they say, Home is Where The Heart Is. Also, Tampa is a thriving urban market that is growing and evolving daily.

METRO: When did you decide to bridge the gap of commercial agriculture and the local market?

A common theme runs deep within this local power couple. Meet Zack and Christina Alvarez, Tampa natives as they strive for clean, fresh produce to be easily accessible for all. Both successful in their own right prior to the cultivation of Le Roots, Zack and Christina had an idea sprout and were driven to bring it to life. With the concept “Le Roots,” this vision is literally coming to fruition.

Zack’s background is in finance and he has assisted many clients throughout his 15 years of management consulting and public accounting experience for a national, top-10 public accounting firm, in addition to founding his own boutique advisory firm, Rooster Capital.

Christina has an aptitude for all things culinary. Her background involves being apart of a fourth generation business, Arturo Fuente & Co. Her true passion, cooking has allowed her to really do what she

loves. She pursued her dreams at one of New York’s top 3 culinary schools.

After working under revered chefs, such as Daniel Boulud and as a food stylist for Food Network and abc’s The Chew, she decided to bring her experience back to her beloved hometown.

Le Roots provides the crème de la crème of produce to area restaurants allowing local chefs to customize their produce, which is revolutionary. Along with the continuation of this service, the Alvarezes have recently opened Le Market, a modern, upscale produce stand, allowing the freshest possible offerings available to make it to Tampa area dinner tables.

METRO: What inspired the creation of Le Roots?

Le Roots: Living in New York City, we had access to some of the best produce in the country and we knew Tampa would welcome the concept.

Le Roots: From purchasing the land in 2020 to constructing our greenhouse from the ground up, it has been a labor of love. We knew we wanted to bridge the gap from the start, but we wanted to ensure that our greenhouse concept was a well-oiled machine before opening our market doors. We knew it was time when we did a private, invite-only viewing of our first official crop and received the overwhelmingly positive feedback, which was May 2023. From that point forward, it was GAME ON! METRO: What are some of your favorite places in the Tampa Bay Area?

Le Roots: We love trying all of the new restaurants popping up left & right in our area.

We love to walk the infamous Bayshore Blvd., along with the Riverwalk on a beautiful day and visit the Armature Works. We also love to take our son to the Florida Aquarium. Then of course, Downtown Tampa, specifically Water Street.

METRO: Where does the ultimate vision you both have take Le Roots?

Le Roots: Our family, along with so many others, care about what we are putting in our bodies. We aim to continue to be at the forefront of providing a clean, healthy option for the freshest produce. We pride ourselves on maintaining a pesticide-free product along with ensuring our customers (both wholesale and retail) receive a product that has been harvested less than 48-hours prior to consumption.

Epicurean’s Second Course Multi-Million Dollar Expansion Now Open A local hub for all things culinary, Epicurean recently celebrated 10 years of being the staple hotel in the Hyde Park and South Howard area. There’s no better way to highlight the accomplishments Epicurean has made in the local lodging and dining scene than with its elaborate $21 million dollar expansion.

The new space includes 51 new guest rooms and suites, a private lobby, meeting space, and a rooftop terrace. LAMPLighters Christmas Silver Coffee: A great way to celebrate the season at the annual event with nearly 200 guests at the beautiful home of Monica and Andrew Livingstone. The LAMPLighters cooked the food and served it on silver platters as is the tradition. Co-chairs Laura Maddalon and Erin McWhirtor led the 34th annual event raising $35,000 to assist the children sheltered at Metropolitan Ministries and Joshua House. Hyde Park Condo Pops with Colorful Coastal Vibe

t was necessary to close in on her clients vision. “They loved a modern aesthetic with bright, vibrant spots of color,” said interior designer Debra Ackerbloom, principal of Debra Ackerbloom Interiors. Translating their vision was unique, and not like other projects that Ackerbloom had worked on as her clients were still living in London when the project began. Over a period of 6-7 months, Ackerbloom and her team created a beautiful home for her clients, Sharon and Fred Weintraub.

Sharon and Fred Weintraub have lived an international life for the past 15 years residing in London and Singapore.

Sharon is most recently senior vice president of gas and power trading for an international energy company. Fred is an Emmy award-winning executive producer of sports.

“Hyde Park House feels like a boutique condominium with unique design as you see the building from Bayshore Blvd,” said Sharon Weintraub. “It’s one of the many jewels of the Hyde Park neighborhood, and we are proud to be members of this historical community.”

“Walking into our condo in Tampa puts a smile on our faces,” said Sharon Weintraub. “Working with Debra Ackerbloom and her team was a joyful experience.”

The simplicity of the entrance with Vahallan handprinted neutral wallcovering, entry console with oversized-square mirror with lighted wall sconces by Modern Forms reflects the light to create a warm welcome with the spectacular water views that can be seen from the entry point.

The open floor plan allows easy entertaining between the kitchen and the great room area. Custom cabinetry and the clean lines of the quartz countertop create a wonderful island to gather. The three counter stools are upholstered in suede fabric on an aged oak frame. The chevron marble backsplash in the kitchen creates visual interest.

Ackerbloom recalls that she used the vibrant colors to promote energy that translated into a coastal vibe for her client. Ackerbloom is familiar with Hyde Park House and knows the building well, as she and her design team has worked on other units in the building. She loves the lobby and the common areas, while the Bayshore location offers amazing views of Tampa Bay. “It can’t be easy working with a client 5,000 miles away,” recalls Sharon and Fred Weintraub. “Her ability to understand our preferences, project manage and execute the vision in an elegant, yet comfortable and creative way has given us a great home. We would work with Debra again and again.”

ome sail away aboard the brand new Celebrity Ascent.

We recently had the opportunity to join the celebration for the Inauguration and Naming Ceremony of Celebrity Cruises newest ship, Celebrity Ascent in early December 2023. The Ascent is the fourth ship in the brand’s revolutionary Edge Series. It was certainly a whirlwind two day experience to explore the ship, and it certainly left us wanting to return for a longer voyage.

From the ease of boarding the ship greeted by the incredibly friendly staff, the Ascent made getting to our room a breeze. There is no central check-in to get your keys to your stateroom. The keys are simply waiting at your door for easy access.

We had a Sunset Veranda® stateroom that transforms from window to terrace. I’m still undecided whether I like this room type over a traditional

balcony, but it does allow additional interior space in the room, while offering fresh air when the window is lowered with simply a push of a button.

The first evening of festivities were the naming of the Ascent with inspiring co-Godmothers, Captain Sandy Yawn, star of Bravo TV’s hit franchise, Below Deck, and her sister Michelle Dunham, Founder of the Jacksonville School for Autism, who officially named the ship in true maritime tradition with the breaking of a champagne bottle on the ship’s hull. They were joined by Greek brothers Captain Dimitrios Kafetzis and Captain Tasos Kafetzis, who will take the helm of the new ship, after being named Co-Captains of Celebrity Ascent, a first for the brand and the industry.

The Ascent offers 32 restaurants, bars and lounges including a special restaurant Le Voyage by Michelin award winning Chef Daniel Boulud.

We enjoyed an evening sunset

from the multi-deck Sunset Bar designed by interior designer Nate Berkus. There is also a collection of travel and home accessories called The Sunset Collection by Nate Burkus available exclusively on board Ascent.

The open-air Rooftop Garden has two cantilever floating pools with breathtaking views.

The Magic Carpet® — the world’s first cantilevered lounge and gathering space at sea sits on the edge of the ship, offering a new way to drink, dine and socialize while enjoying unobstructed panoramic views of the blue ocean.

We dined at several of the eateries including the fully immersive and animated Le Petit Chef® dinner and the Fine Cut Steakhouse. As the popularity of bourbon continues, the The Craft Social bar offers many hi-end bourbons and tasting seminars for guests.

Elevated Mexican Cuisine Streetlight Taco | By Ronda M. Parag

ola to the newest Mexican restaurant in South Tampa, Streetlight Taco. A new taco joint under the direction of Chef-partner Michael Brannock opened in early January. A brand new building with a contemporary and open kitchen design has emerged to serve up authentic Mexican dishes in an elevated, quick service type setting.

The partners with Brannock include Jack Murray and Nick Reader, two of the managing partners of Rocca, the Italian restaurant that recently earned a Michelin star in 2023.

Brannock has been a corporate chef for corporate restaurants including Carrabba’s and PDQ, but he has now followed his passion to start his own restaurant showcasing traditional Mexican cuisine.

Immersing himself in the Mexican culture through traveling to cities like Oaxaca, Mexico City, Puebla, Hidalgo and Morelos, Brannock discovered some authentic ways to get the menu

items just right, using traditional ingredients sources from throughout Mexico. The fresh pulled Oaxaca cheese is made onsite, along with the grinding of the corn for the freshest and most authentic tortillas. The streetlight hanging outside the restaurant is from Huamantla, Tlaxcala.

Stacks of corn from Mexican family farms greet guests at the entrance to the kitchen. The corn goes through a process called nixtamalization to ultimately become the tasty wrap for the tacos and tostadas.

The open kitchen has a wood-fired grill where the food is prepared. With 2 tacos per order, we tried the brisket taco made with puerco bean, melted cheese, cilantro, onion, almond/pecan sals macha in a flour tortilla. Served in the stone ground heirloom corn tortilla, we also had the carnitas tacos made with copper cooked pork, cilantro, onion, chicharron, arbol salsa and lime.

For those that want a vegetarian option consider the sweet potato or

spicy eggplant taco served on a corn tortilla. The potato is brushed with sesame salsa macha and agave, wood-grilled to become caramelized and topped with goat cheese, pomegranate, shaved jalapeno, scallions and black and white sesame seeds.

Chips and dips are a must-have for any Mexican meal, and we tried the Chipotle Chorizo Queso made with cream, chipotle and topped with wood-grilled homemade chorizo and just the right amount of flavor. The creamy and lightly spiced queso was served with a generous portion of house-made corn chips.

The restaurant also offers a full bar with the largest collection of mezcal, along with some tasty cocktails including three types of Streetlight Margaritas along with delicious frozen drinks of Pina Colada, Margarita, Daiquiri and my favorite – an Expresso Martini made with Ketel One, Espresso, Mr. Black, Coconut Milk and Simple Syrup.
