Featuring more than 100 works by diverse artists, the exhibition Self-Taught Genius: Treasures from the American Folk Art Museum, presents an original premise that considers the changing implications of self-taught artists in the United States, from a deeply entrenched and widespread culture of self-education in the early national period, to its usage today, to describe artists working outside the art historical canon and often in isolated circumstances.

“In the fall of 2016, the Tampa Museum of Art continues to interest audiences of all generations and predispositions to art, by introducing the community to unique opportunities to view masterworks rarely seen in Florida’s Central Gulf Coast region,” says Michael Tomor, Tampa Museum of Art’s Executive Director.

Self-Taught Genius: Masterworks from the American Folk Art Museum closes its national tour in Tampa, with an extraordinary opportunity to see three centuries of art from the most important Folk Art collections in the United States.

The exhibition and the national tour are made possible by generous funding from the Henry Luce Foundation, as part of its 75th anniversary initiative. Locally, the exhibition is presented by Bank of America.

Oktoberfest Tampa Partners With Audi of America Oktoberfest Tampa is gearing up for its 7th annual event, along the scenic Tampa Riverwalk at Curtis Hixon Park.

Every year friends and family gather for three days to participate in the Outrageous Bavarian Games, enjoy traditional live music and dance performances, and imbibe on an Oktoberfest-themed menu of food and beverages.

“Planning the festival takes time and commitment from a variety of sponsors and partner organizations,”

says festival director, Nicol Winkler. “We couldn’t do it without them. Each year, we try to figure out what else we can do to interact with our fans and community members, to give them new ways to engage with our brand and our sponsors.”

Andrew Hall Gives More And Gets More People To Give

Andrew Hall is a regional director for AT&T, managing external and legislative affairs in Tampa Bay and the Sarasota area.

He has a demanding schedule, but Hall finds time to contribute more than 500 hours a year volunteering or leading

organizations that give back to the community, all to benefit children.

Hall made a commitment to being involved with helping children who were facing challenges when he was in high school in Atlanta. At the time, Hall’s father was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and it changed his outlook on family and community. Fortunately, Hall’s father recovered and is healthy today.

When Hall chaired the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk in 2012, the campaign raised $450,000, a 50 percent increase over the previous year and the highest total in the Tampa Bay chapter’s 11-year history.

In 2015, as Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor made plans to set up a foundation upon her retirement, she turned to Hall to help lead her fundraising. In just 45 days, Hall and committee raised $250,000.

Hall heads the AT&T Pioneers, a volunteer organization made up of former and

current AT&T employees. Last year, the group contributed $50,000 and thousands of volunteer hours to 70+ organizations in Tampa Bay. Hall also serves on the board of directors for Athletes and Causes, The Florida Aquarium, and the Van Wezel Foundation, and is a member of the Leadership Council for the United Negro College Fund, Tampa Bay. Hall’s efforts have helped boost technology education programs at Metropolitan Ministries, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Suncoast, and the Sheriff’s Youth Ranch.

Westchase Fit Body Boot Camp Birthday Challenge Chad Johnson, owner of Westchase Fit Body Boot Camp, recently did a birthday challenge – his, which was July 11 – to raise money for The Children’s Home in Tampa. The challenge was to do 2,000 push ups in one hour, then run a half marathon, 13 miles, on the Pinellas Trail.

Chad successfully did 1,700 push-ups in one hour, and got to 2,020 in 73 minutes! The challenge was a success, and the money raised for The Children’s Home was over $2,016. Job well done, and for a worthy cause. Visit www.fitbodywestchase.com.

Tampa Community Unites for 8th Annual FARA Energy Ball Friedreichâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ataxia (FA) is a debilitating multi-system disease and the most common cause of inherited ataxia; 1 in 100 people are carriers of the FA Gene. What begins as difficulty with balance and coordination, progresses over a short period of time to a life altering loss of mobility, energy, speech and hearing, robbing children and young adults of the ability to live active and independent lives.

In the pursuit of treatments and a cure for FA, the Tampa community will unite with scientists and patient families on September 15-17 at the Friedreichâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA), eighth annual Scientific Symposium and Energy Ball Gala. At the symposium, guests will receive updates on progress on FA research from the bench to the bedside.

www.ustream.tv/channel/curefa. Wendy Ryan, ABC Action News Anchor, will emcee the event and Steve Griggs, Tampa Bay Lightning CEO, will chair the event with his wife Janell. Last year, FARA funded over $4.5 million in drug development and clinical research worldwide.

Tampa Prep Shares Sneak Peek Of 4 Million Dollar Renovations Tampa Preparatory School unveiled the 47,000 sq. ft. renovation of its Upper School at a Sneak Peek event for donors who funded the project. Attendees convened in Mitchell Lobby to hear from several school representatives before exploring the three-story, tech-forward space. Guests explored the new Smith Arts Wing, featuring a full video production suite with two studios, rehearsal rooms for student recording and other custom components. In the Fredlake Humanities Wing, donors saw the benefits of study nooks for small group collaboration and the strategic use of sound, light and technology in the Active Learning Environment (ALE) classrooms. In an ALE, multiple projectors and movable furniture provide a front-row seat for every student.

With completion of this renovation, Tampa Prep proudly becomes one of the few schools in the nation to boast Active Learning Environments in Middle School and Upper School classrooms. The final phase of the expansion will outfit science labs and lecture halls with custom educational technology.

No corners were cut and quality was never compromised, despite the intricate and elaborate architectural design and globally-sourced, one-of-a-kind features and finishings found, within this custom-built Island Estates residence, located between Clearwater Beach and downtown Clearwater.

Several years passed from the time ground was broken for the waterfront home, offering eastern views of Clearwater Harbor from its backyard, until it was move-in ready. The work is now complete and the wait has ended, as commissioned paintings have been hung in place, wine cellar racks filled and final touches were finally applied.

Within the walls of the 10,000square-foot, four-floor residence, are subtle details that delight and non-traditional touches that intrigue.

Corners werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cut, but instead, were frequently bypassed in favor of curved walls and windows that can only fit with specially designed banquettes, made without seams, custom wooden cabinetry and melted glass, molded to sit snugly against a rounded surface.

“Curves, circular patterns and wavy lines offer softer, and more whimsical alternatives to rigid corners, harsh angles and severe surfaces,” noted Rob Bowen, principal of Rob Bowen Design Group of St. Petersburg.

The resulting timeless design, and accompanying effortless lifestyle, are the culmination of a collaborative process involving hundreds of diverse, talented tradesmen, plus the discerning eye of Bowen, who first became involved with the project five years ago.

From the main level, the open floor plan, a multitude of windows and multi-floor-high ceilings, afford unobstructed views of the wide open waterfront. A similar view from the third floor master bedroom makes it seem like the house has the well populated island it occupies all to itself.

Similarly, it’s more about what you don’t see that gives the entire home a sleek, singular style that is contemporary, but not trendy.

Bathroom mirrors, speakers, light switches, outlets and control panels, are mounted flush with the walls and blended into their backgrounds to make them less conspicuous.

Kitchen drawers slide open to reveal drawers-within-drawers and pocket doors slide out of sight into the walls.

The unrelenting quest for nothing but the best materials and workmanship endured, throughout the time it took to fully construct and furnish the five-bedroom, eight-bath house.

“There are perfectly executed, subtle details that spark questions and add mystery,” said Bowen.

Some elements even defied convention and required newly concocted solutions to make the concepts work.

A seven-foot high, 17-foot wide second story window, that overlooks the main floor from the fitness center, first had to be made and then hoisted into place. Not easy to do since this was a single, seamless piece of glass.

Countless LED lights, distinguishable only when they are illuminated, are tastefully integrated to create soft accents throughout the interior, including around the base of the free-standing circular shower and the combination kitchen island and dining counter.

A 180-foot vertical chandelier made from fabric and delicately molded plastic, descends from the second to the first floor. Another dramatically designed lighting fixture features two miles of silver cable, that have been artfully draped to make the metal cascade like falling water. The dining room, that easily accommodates a circular table seating 10, overlooks floor-to-ceiling curved windows facing the treeshaded residential street. When the lights are on at night, the space glows like a giant crystal ball.

From the wall mounted Moroccanstyle bowls to the handwoven rugs, to the bathroom sinks that cast a red hue on hot water and create cold water that appears blue, there are untold ways the house has been accented with what Bowen refers to as “sprinkles of jewelry everywhere.”

“It’s all very soft, organic and clean, not stark. It’s really relevant for all time.”

11th Annual Rays On The Runway When: June 29, 2016 Where: Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront

When the Rays Wives decided to get behind a charity, the fashion and the fun came together for the 11th Annual Rays On The Runway to benefit The Children’s Dream Fund. The evening began as guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres, a chef-manned pasta station and sipping specialty cocktails. Rays fans also enjoyed a meet and mingle with players from the Tampa Bay Rays.

The fashions and latest styles were from Dilliard’s as the Rays players, coaches and their wives and girlfriends took to the runway, along with some special dream models. The emcees for this year were DJ Fresh and Lindsay Guyer, who kept the guest entertained with their quick wit and lively antics during the live auction. The event raised $125,000 to make more dreams come true.

Meet Stephan Schubert, Executive Pastry Chef at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

Overseeing all the pastries and delightful treats at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is 25-year veteran of the pastry business, Stephan Schubert. He will represent Seminole Hard Rock Tampa at the Global Chefs Pastry Challenge in Greece in late September.

METRO had a chance to catch up with Chef Stephan and discover what he does on a typical day and what he likes to do outside of the kitchen.

METRO: What inspired you to become a pastry chef?

Schubert: Originally, I wanted to be an airplane mechanic, but in Germany, at the age of fifteen, you have to make a decision on your career track early on.

I told my parents I wanted to work on airplanes and they told me I had to go into pastry. My dad is a certified Master Pastry Chef and Master Baker

and we always baked or cooked at home.

M: What are the menu inspirations?

S: For inspiration there is no better place to look than within nature. I love to take a walk in the park, a botanical garden or even the farmers market to garner new ideas. From the shape and coloring of a simple pear, to the detailed grooves on a tree trunk; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great to just walk and enjoy the beauty of nature and then turn those features into a delicate, edible creation.

M: What is your typical day like at the Hard Rock?

S: When I walk into work at Seminole Hard Rock Tampa, the first thing I do is interact with the pastry team members and then grab my cup of coffee. After that, I check my emails and walk around property to check on products and find opportunities to make specific

Metro Dining Guide pastry operations better. Seminole Hard Rock Tampa has a large operation and most of my time is spent communicating and building relationships with other departments.

M: What is your favorite dessert/pastry to eat?

S: I love a fresh, warm fruit pie (apple or berry), with a scoop of fresh vanilla bean ice cream. A classic comfort food.

M: When you are not in the kitchen, what do you like to do?

S: When I’m not in the kitchen, I love to be outdoors; taking walks, gardening and enjoying fresh air.

M: Tell us a bit more about the Global Chefs Pastry Challenge.

S: It was a great honor to be asked to represent the USA in the Global Pastry Chef Challenge. In order to be considered, you have to win a national pastry title. In July 2014, I accomplished this by winning the ACF National Pastry Chef Competition. Afterwards, I was invited to represent the USA in the Regional Global Pastry Challenge, which was held in Quito, Ecuador in October 2015. This was a particularly difficult competition, as my pallet of molds and equipment never arrived in Quito and I had to scramble around the city to find new equipment and items to recreate my custom molds. For the regional competition, I had six hours to create a two foot custom chocolate showpiece and five of the same high end desserts. In the end, that hard work and practice before hand paid off and I won the title of Regional Global Pastry Chef. The final step is the World Competition in Thessaloniki, Greece, which is this September. I leave on September 20 to represent the USA and Seminole Hard Rock Tampa in the finals.

I will have eight hours to complete a chocolate gateau, five of the same high end desserts and a custom chocolate showpiece made to be over four feet tall; all of which will incorporate the competition theme, “Tales and Legends of Greece.”
