The new location this year, will offer amazing views of the downtown Tampa skyline and fireworks. The event promises to have stunning visual effects, glamorous décor, a grand champagne bar and much more. The Frequency Band will provide high energy dance music, along with DJ Papi spinning the current hits. “The Rooftop Eve was rated in the top 10 things to do in the state of Florida for NYE and with our partnership with The DeBartolo Family Foundation, you can count on it not only being the place to be, but with the celebrities you would want to ring in the New Year with,” says Rooftop Eve co-founder, Stephen Hickey.

METROLife Arts

Museum of Fine Arts Spotlights Growing Collection of Female Artists The exhibit Marks Made: Prints by American Women Artists from the 1960s to the Present, showcasing nearly all print processes, includes more than 90 works by artists including: Anni Albers, Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Agnes Martin, Joan Mitchell, Louise Nevelson, Louise Bourgeois, Janet Fish, Joyce Kozloff, Jennifer Bartlett, Joan Snyder, Lynda Benglis, Lee Bontecou, Judy Chicago, Barbara Kruger, Elizabeth Murray, Judy Pfaff, Susan Rothenberg, Faith Ringgold, Kiki Smith, Pat Steir, Lorna Simpson, Lesley Dill, Nancy Graves, Yvonne Jacquette, Kara Walker, Betty Woodman, Arlene Shechet, and Betye Saar. A majority of the prints are gifts of discerning art collectors Martha and Jim Sweeny of St. Petersburg, or museum acquisitions made possible by funds from the couple. Four selections from the Portfolio Compleat by the Guerilla Girls, a Museum acquisition made possible by the generosity of the Sweenys, is an exhibition highlight. The Guerilla Girls began protesting the treatment of women by the established art world in the mid-1980s and are still making waves. Members choose pseudonyms based on the names of late influential female artists and wear gorilla masks in their protests and appearances to maintain anonymity. Among the abstract works on display include artist Joan Mitchell’s Flower I (1981) and Arbres (Trees) (1991-1992), and Pat Steir’s Peacock Waterfall (2001)

and From the Boat (1991) reference nature, but veer toward abstraction. Also among the prints are those by Betty Woodman and Arlene Shechet, two of the world’s most inventive ceramic sculptors, who challenge the distinction between craft and fine art. Ms. Woodman has concentrated on the vessel — its multiple uses and meaning throughout time — which can be seen in her imaginative Greek Pots Visit Edo (2002). Katherine Pill, the Museum’s Assistant Curator of Art after 1950, organized the exhibition, and created an illustrated catalogue with a foreword by Judith Brodsky available in the Museum Store. The essays are by Art in Print Editor Susan Tallman, Master Printer Erika Greenberg-Schneider, and Ms. Pill. Two limited-edition prints by Elisabeth Condon and Jane Hammond, who are represented in Marks Made, have been produced in collaboration with the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, and Bleu Acier Editions of Tampa, to celebrate both the exhibition and the MFA’s 50th anniversary. The Museum had very few works by American women before this project began. Along with others like Donna and Thomas Brumfield Jr., the Sweenys were also instrumental in establishing the MFA’s extraordinary holdings of folk art. As this exhibition demonstrates, their contributions to the MFA have been enormous.

“Marks Made: Prints by American Women Artists from the 1960s to the Present” On display at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg and continues through Sunday, January 24, 2016. For more information call 727.896.2667 or visit www.fine-arts.org.

This past May, the American Heart Association Tampa Bay and Laser Spine Institute launched the Go Red For Women Casting Call -- an initiative that offered local women (and men), an opportunity to share their stories of heart disease and stroke. From survivors and caregivers, to healthcare professionals and heart health advocates, more than 45 people shared powerful testimonies. While heart disease and stroke – the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Americans – affect millions of people, it can be hard to put a face to these diseases, but in Tampa Bay, four brave survivors were selected from the Casting Call videos to be the local faces of heart disease and stroke. These women are compelled to share their stories with the community to raise awareness and encourage others, to take preventative measures that will help lower their risk of heart disease and stroke. “My passion to make a difference in the lives of others has never been stronger. Spreading the word about heart disease not only saves lives, but can also improve the quality of lives,” said Lynette Bear, a cardiac arrest survivor and the director of medical care screening at Laser Spine Institute. On Feb. 2, the American Heart Association and Laser Spine Institute are co-hosting a public event at Tampa Theatre that features a short film highlighting all of the Casting Call participants. This event is a wonderful way to kick off American Heart Month and celebrate family, friends and neighbors who have stood up to heart disease and stroke. Students at Hillel Academy have been gardening with an Earth Box for many years, but recently the school partnered with TUB Farms, Tampa Urban Benefit Farms, a local non-profit to give students learning opportunities, while providing fresh produce to food insecure members of the community. Hillel Academy is the first school in a pilot program designed to connect “farmer” schools with beneficiary agencies, that will distribute the vegetables and herbs to their clients, while the students learn about innovative agriculture and grow systems. Hillel Academy students receive more than a science education as they workL on the school’s TUB Farm. They practice one of the most important concepts in Judaism, tikkun olam, repairing the world. Community service is very important to the community day school’s students of all ages. Donating school-grown crops to HCFPA is a perfect fit. 5 Health Symptoms Men Shouldn’t Ignore

American Academy of Family Physicians reported that 38 percent of men visit the doctor only when extremely sick, but just because you feel healthy doesn’t mean you are healthy. “A warning sign can be subtle, or it can be immediate, painful, and worrisome. See your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms and put you, and your family’s mind, at rest,” recommends Dr. Mark Swierzewski, Medical Director of Florida Hospital Carrollwood Men’s Health Services. People often think heart attack when there is chest Dr. Mark Swierzewski pain, but it could also signal angina, pneumonia, asthma, a pulmonary embolism, or even acid reflux or a stomach ulcer. cancer, or an enlarged prostate but could also be due to either bladder or kidney stones or cancer. Shortness of breath could mean a heart attack, or it could be chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, asthma, emphysema, or pulmonary hypertension. Approximately 70 percent of erectile dysfunction cases are caused by another condition, like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, kidney disease, neurologic or vascular disease. Excessive thirst is often the first sign of diabetes. Excessive thirst could also indicate possible internal bleeding, severe infection, or a failure of the heart, liver, or kidneys. Memory loss, a level of continued and unusual forgetfulness could signal Alzheimer’s disease, brain tumors, depression, encephalitis, and stroke. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed, please schedule an appointment with your doctor to review your healthcare treatment options. The remaining bedrooms are a great size for the kids, or to set up as a guest bedroom. The two boat lifts and dock make it easy to live a life on the water. The four-car garage has plenty of storage too, with a driveway covered in brick pavers, making for a grand entrance. Don’t miss the chance to make this home your family’s dream home. The Malizia Family St. John’s Episcopal Day School www.stjohnseagles.org David and Victoria Malizia have four children who have all attended St. John’s Episcopal Day School. Their three older children – Cole, Anna Peyton, and Kent attended St. John’s for 10 years. Their youngest daughter, Maggie, is currently in 6th grade at St. John’s. David Malizia is an Investor and Managing Partner at Westshore Capital Partners and is the Treasurer and member of the Board of Trustees at St. John’s Episcopal Day School, and Victoria is Clerk of the Vestry at St. John’s Episcopal Church. “St. John’s has been and continues to be a place where our students’ academic achievement is second to none, the Christian environment permeates all that we do, and the neighborhood location allows our students to feel engaged with their community and surrounding,” says St. John’s Head of School, Robert Stephens. “The Malizias are excellent examples of the kind of outstanding students of strong character that St. John’s graduates each year.” “We looked at all of our school options (public and private) in 1998, and found St. John’s Episcopal to have a superior focus on the core curriculum in grammar, reading, math and language arts,” says David and Victoria Malizia. “The Christian environment is very loving and compassionate with an emphasis on morals and respect of others. We appreciate the self discipline and work ethic that is instilled in students at St. John’s. Students are taught good study habits and organizational skills essential to

success in high school and beyond.” The strong academic focus, as well as sports activities, help students once they leave St. John’s and enter high school and college. “St. John’s prepared me well for my AP classes in high school,” says Kent Malizia, a junior at Plant High School. “The smaller class sizes at St. John’s allowed for teachers to know each student personally and keep their best interests in mind.” “Aside from academics, St. John’s taught me how to balance my extracurricular activities and to always leave room for my faith,” says Anna Peyton, a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania and member of the Varsity Track and Field team as a high jumper. “I am very thankful for the ten years I was able to spend in such a loving environment and would do it all over again.” “My time at St. John’s significantly shaped me into who I am today,” says Cole Malizia, who is now a college senior at Washington & Lee University. “I made lifelong friends, learned important life skills, and discovered many passions and interests that remain today. St. John’s provided a nurturing environment to grow as an individual. It was important to learn how to interact with my classmates, learning God’s love, and learning how to care about others. These are important skills because knowing oneself and how to empathize, forgive, and interact with others, has helped me to mature and interact with new people everyday.” A sense of community is a common thread among the families. “St. John’s Episcopal has been more than a school to our family over the past two decades,” says David and Victoria Malizia. “We treasure the relationships and friends that we have established with the teachers and the parents in the community. We value the teachers’ dedication and commitment to students and the rich traditions at St. John’s.”

Sense of Community Drives Decisions on Choosing A Private School Education

The Politis Family Saint Paul’s School www.ClearwatersIndpendentSchool.org As a family of five with busy careers as doctors, Chris and Effie Politis needed a school that provided plenty of activities for their three boys. Chris Politis, a Urologist, is self employed at St. Pete Urology and Effie Politis is a Plastic Surgeon at USF Physician’s Group, and Assistant Professor and Florida Hospital Affiliate. “We were interested in a quaint, nurturing school where the children would have the opportunity to make long lasting friendships with fellow peers that shared similar family values,” says Chris and Effie Politis. “We also were looking for a school with a strong academic base and various enrichment programs to help develop character, leadership, and confidence.” “Saint Paul’s – Clearwater’s Independent School – is the only FCIS and SAIS accredited school in Clearwater,” says Katie Sibson, Director of Admissions at Saint Paul’s. “Saint Paul’s offers a premier academic experience for students in PK3 - 8th. Students enjoy a safe and beautiful ten-acre campus along Allen’s Creek, a 7:1 student-teacher ratio, and an outstanding arts program.” The couple really did their homework when they began their search for an education for their oldest son, Gregory, now a 4th grader. “We did a tremendous amount of research to ensure we would find a school that would be the right fit for our children,” says Chris and Effie. “We realize that

children end up spending more time at school than at home, so we were looking for a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment. After touring many facilities and attending many open houses, we attended a new family orientation at St. Paul’s School which really solidified our decision. We spoke with the parents of children ranging from early childhood to middle school, who shared a genuine enthusiasm about the school and its overall philosophy. We also met students who had moved on to various high schools in the area, who stated that their St. Paul’s years were the best years of their life. It is apparent through the younger alumni that their experiences at St. Paul’s School positions them for success in high school and college.” “We were able to visit various classes and could immediately see the enjoyment and camaraderie amongst the students,” says Chris and Effie Politis. “The class sizes are small and promote a child centered environment which allows for each child to grow individually.” The school has an affiliation with Ruth Eckerd Hall for music and drama. Effie says her boys love the opportunity to participate in music and theatre. They also like the library time, art classes and buddy programs. The school pairs the older students with the younger ones for chapel and reading time. “This fosters a community feel to the school and promotes school spirit,” says Effie. “We are confident that our children will create many memories and solid friendships at St. Paul’s School while preparing our children to meet the challenges of the future,” says Chris and Effie Politis.

When the search for schools began, it was their oldest son, Connor, who led the charge. The Gerardis had friends, whose son attended Tampa Prep, so they had their son shadow for a day. Connor felt comfortable and when Missy drove onto the campus, she felt a sense of community. “The decision to send your children to private school is very personal,” says Missy Gerardi. “Tampa Prep is special to our family, because we feel it meets the needs of each of our boys’ personalities and plays to their strengths. Ultimately, it comes down to a gut feeling. When I drop my boys off and pick them up every day, their faces say it all. They are happy, content and love the learning environment at Tampa Prep. That is priceless! It feels like a second home and that is the way school should feel, considering the amount of time they spend there each day.” Right now Tampa Preparatory School is excited to be

leading the way in education with the focus on what’s best for students. In the past few years, Tampa Prep has implemented a later start time for school each day, iPad one-to-one programs and has renovated the Middle School to Active Learning Environments. The School has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for innovation leadership and educational excellence. This designation is reserved for schools that meet criteria for innovation, leadership and educational excellence, and demonstrate a clear vision of exemplary learning environments. “I could not be more proud of our school. The entire Tampa Prep community – faculty, parents, students and the Board of Trustees – has worked hard to create an environment of innovation and creativity that in the end, places the school on the cutting edge of the use of technology as a tool for learning. The 21st century skills are alive and well at Prep and Apple has recognized our efforts,” says Kevin M. Plummer, Head of School. “We strive to provide students the tools they will need for their ever-changing future.” “The school just exudes positivity, which starts with the administration and trickles down to the faculty and student body,” says Missy Gerardi. “It's a happy place.” In addition to strong academics, parents want to provide values and instill life skills to their children. “We were looking for a school that not only helps them learn, but also builds character. Tampa Prep accomplishes both,” says Phillip and Missy Gerardi.

ne of the world’s most popular vacation destinations, Key West, offers a unique combination of fun and sun, land and sea, as well as excitement day and night. And, with all the choices for a weekend getaway, Key West is right in our own backyard. Whether you are looking for the island lifestyle, a laid back, relaxed retreat, or the ocean views, swaying palms, or flavors of the sea, guests can enjoy it all at this tropical island paradise right here in Florida. Key West, an island city, is part of the Florida Keys and the state’s southernmost point, lying roughly 90 miles north of Cuba. Famed for its pastel-hued, conchstyle houses and laid-back attitude, it’s a cruise-ship stop also accessible from the mainland via the Overseas Highway. It’s known more for its coral reefs – destinations for diving and snorkeling – than for its beaches. Explore the crystal clear waters with a diving, snorkeling or sailing expedition. Savor a Key West sunset at Mallory Square. Or take a relaxing stroll down Duval Street, grab a cold drink, lis-

ten to a local band or shop at the many art galleries, shops and boutiques. Don’t forget to stop in to see one of the most popular museums in Key West, the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum. Ernest Hemingway lived and wrote here for more than ten years. Calling Key West home, Hemingway found solace and great physical challenge in the turquoise waters that surround this tiny island. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is home to approximately 40-50 polydactyl (six-toed) cats. Looking for a place to stay right on the water? Part romance, part adventure, and entirely paradise, Pier House Resort is legendary in the Florida Keys for countless reasons. As the first full-service Key West hotel, the convenient location on the edge of Old Town, puts guests steps away from a private beach and all the entertainment that makes the island so famous. With 119 waterfront guestrooms and 23 expansive suites, Pier House Resort is a premier destination in the Florida Keys. Whether soaking in the

sun on a romantic Key West getaway, adventuring with family or seeking a tranquil outpost with your friends, their wide selection of rooms guarantees a perfect stay. One stop to make is the new Wine-O experience. A unique and inviting wine shop and bar nuzzled amidst the chaos of Duvall St., it features over 200 bottles from around the world. Wine-O offers wine by the glass, or guests can experience a varietal tasting with the ever popular wine flights. According to legend, once Key West sand gets in your shoes, you’ll return again and again. So hop in the car, put the top down, and enjoy the sunny, relaxing drive to the end of US 1. M
