radford Stevens is a dog dad of two amazing pups and owner of VKNG ROW, a small group fitness studio right outside downtown Tampa in Hyde Park.

Like most, Stevens has a hectic schedule and finds it hard to make time for a lot of things. “Running two small businesses, and working on a PhD in Human Health and Performance, doesn’t leave me with much free time, but I learned early on that putting my fitness first is what puts my health and wellness first,” said Stevens. “I have set days in which I run early in the morning, no matter what, and then I will mix in my other

workouts whenever I can make free time. With my runs set in stone, I know that no matter how hectic the week, I will at least always have those.”

“My Miss-America-goal is to make a positive change for the people around me,” said Stevens. “My personal fitness goals are constantly changing and advancing. MINDFULLNESS Starting Your Day In A Positive Way.

W

aking up feeling refreshed, relaxed and ready to tackle the day? Or struggling to open your eyes, already stressed about work, family matters, health issues or any other concerns that make hearts race, bodies tense and breathing become short and shallow?

Whether these are recent afflictions caused these uncertain times or on-going issues that show no signs of abating, there is cause for concern.

Hoping to help others take control of their lives by taking a breath, Tampa resident Jessie Stehlik launched a Facebook group last summer featuring healers from around the world. She created an online community that brings people together to practice breathing techniques, participate in guided visualizations and identify intentions designed to enhance their mindfulness.

The group, “5 Minutes To Sunrise,” engages followers for about 15 minutes weekday mornings with live presentations that provide participants opportunities to learn from, and benefit from, each other. All sessions are available via video so if the mere thought of getting up at daybreak is enough to induce stress, simply skip the live lessons to view them any time.

“I host professionals who have an understanding of how to use our breath to calm ourselves. I have all different takes on those techniques, from scientific to those who connect to chakras (connected energy points in the body),” said Stehlik. “They lead us through a short meditation to start the day off right.”

“This is purely authentic and simple. There is no bigger plan,” Stehlik said of the free service. “I just wanted to raise a collective awareness to start the day by being mindful. If this affects just one person’s morning, I feel like we’ve done our job.”

Less than a year after launching, Stehlik is already expanding the private group into a public forum to accommodate more followers and allow presentations to be shared.

The Mayo Clinic defines mindfulness as a “type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you’re sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment.

Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.”

Stehlik, a professional photographer, has no formal training in yoga or breath work. But she is a big believer in how those practices can help overcome feelings of anxiety and loneliness, which is why she features trained instructors.

Michele Smith, founder of The Resiliency School in Tampa, has donated her time and talents to the group since last June. She recognized the value of providing life-affirming connections to a community and acknowledges it has provided her with a positive, creative outlet.

“I like to be silent in the mornings so it was a challenging six months for me,” Smith recalled. Work conflicts eventually interrupted her regular Monday morning sessions, but she continues to contribute to the group. “Just a few minutes of meditation every day can help improve sleep quality, digestion, focus and creativity.

This is a very simple, free, self-care ritual that also provides a sense of community. It’s wonderful,” she added.

Becca Childress, a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) and owner of Becca Childress Yoga and Wellness in Fredericksburg, VA. first learned about the site through a mutual friend of Jessie’s.

“People are drawn together energetically during this unusual time. Even though 2020 was one of the most challenging years in our lifetime, amazing things came out of it, like groups like this,” Childress said.

“I look forward to the time I get to spend with this group. In a world that is feeling so disconnected, this is a way to feel connected. People need people and this allows me to offer techniques I know are effective at calming the heart and calming our thoughts.”

Breaking Down Barriers How the American Heart Association is championing health equity and fighting for a world of longer, healthier lives for all.

Q+A with American Heart Association Tampa Bay’s Executive Director, Amanda Palumbo Q: In your over eight years at the American Heart Association, what have you seen as the most important components of your mission and how has the organization evolved in recent years?

A: The AHA continues to be one of the most recognized non-profits in the nation and has invested over $4 billion in heart and stroke research, second only to the federal government. The support of innovative science and ensuring quality care has not changed, but what I have seen evolve is the focus on the crucial role that community environments play on health. There are so many complex social factors that impact an individual’s ability to live healthfully. By focusing on those local social determinants of health, health equity and structural racism, we believe we can truly lift Tampa Bay as a healthier community for all.

Q: What are social determinants of health and why do they play such a big role in the AHA’s work now?

A: We have found that a person’s zip code can dictate more about their health outcomes than their genetic code.

Right here in Tampa Bay, we see that life expectancy can vary by up to 15 years between zip codes that are literally just two miles apart. That’s because of the social determinants of health or the factors that influence where and how people live, learn, work and play. They provide context to a person’s life and can play just as big of a role in affecting health as medications and physical lifestyle changes. For example, a neighborhood that lacks sidewalks or appropriate lighting can keep people from walking, jogging, or playing outside because it may not be safe to do so. It may be harder for people to eat healthy produce if they do not have a grocery store within an easily accessible distance, and therefore they may turn to high-sodium, high-calorie processed food items they can easily get at a corner convenience store.

The AHA believes that the opportunity for a long, healthy life is a fundamental human right, however not everyone can access the things they need to have a full, healthy life, including quality health care. And when you cannot access these things, you often have a worse outcome. Tragically, the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated this issue for many. That is why the work we do in our communities is focused on removing these barriers to health.

Q: What are some of the things the American Heart

Association is doing here in Tampa Bay to work towards optimum heart and brain health for all?

A: We are so proud of the work we are doing here locally to have a tangible impact on the health of our community. One of our main focuses is nutrition security, as we know nearly 1 in 3 families in Tampa Bay struggle with not knowing where their next healthy meal will come from. We are extremely proud of our Food Rx – Food as Medicine initiative, in partnership with the Judeo Christian Clinic and the YMCA Veggie Van, that allows health care providers to screen patients for food insecurity and “prescribe” healthy diets that address obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, etc. Patients can then fill their healthy food prescriptions once a week at an on-site mobile market or at one of several locations throughout Hillsborough County. The AHA’s food insecurity screening tool is utilized in many free clinics and federally-qualified health centers throughout the Tampa Bay area. We also have a great partnership with the St. Pete Free Clinic where we provide nutrition guidelines and health information, a Lifestyle Rx program that aides in healthy lifestyle changes, and culturally-diverse and relevant nutritional recipes.

Q: How can others help with the important work being done in the community by the AHA and its local partners.

A: Our mission is to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives, but we can’t do that alone. We are inviting local individuals, families, companies and organizations to come alongside us as we provide prevention education, blood pressure management, hands-only CPR trainings, youth health initiatives, healthy food access, workplace wellness, tobacco cessation, mental health awareness and so much more –all through a health equity lens. Coronavirus And Heart & Stroke Health Information provided by The American Heart Association In the many months since COVID-19 emerged, medical experts have learned a lot on how it poses a significant threat to the heart. About 1 in 3 people with COVID-19 has cardiovascular disease, making it the most common underlying health condition. It does not appear that cardiovascular disease makes people more likely to get the virus, but it may make the course of it potentially worse. Additionally, a growing number of studies suggest many COVID-19 survivors experience some type of heart damage, even if they didn’t have underlying heart disease and weren’t sick enough to be hospitalized. This latest twist has health care experts worried about a potential increase in heart failure.

As more time has passed and people have found themselves becoming more sedentary than usual as normal routines have been upended, much of the essential advice remains paramount: Take the coronavirus seriously. Do all you can to avoid catching it. And never ignore symptoms of a heart attack, stroke or other condition that should be treated in an emergency room.

“This virus can affect many different types of cells throughout the body,” explains Dr. Javier Cuevas, Assistant Dean, Morsani College of Medicine and American Heart Association Tampa Bay’s Board President. It latches onto cells through an enzyme called ACE2, short for angiotensin-converting enzyme 2. ACE2 is found on all sorts of cell surfaces in the body — including lungs, heart, brain, gastrointestinal tract and the lining of blood vessels — that allows the virus to spread throughout the body. “And that’s why we see so many cardiovascular and other manifestations of the disease.”

When someone does catch the virus, the list of potential heart and stroke-related problems is lengthy. “COVID-19 is thought to contribute to irregular heartbeats, inflammation of the heart muscle, reduced blood flow to the heart and sudden cardiac death,” says Cuevas. The virus does damage through two main pathways — by triggering an immune response that sets up “hyperinflammation,” and by triggering blood clots which can cause strokes in otherwise young, healthy people and also lead to heart attacks.

So, the best intervention is prevention – trying not to get the infection in the first place and practicing healthy habits daily. Eating a well-balanced diet, getting plenty of exercise and sleep, avoiding smoking and overindulgence in alcohol, and managing one’s weight are key factors in maintaining overall heart health. This is especially critical for those already living with cardiovascular disease. People with cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity, should be particularly careful about ways to avoid catching the virus, which include social distancing, mask wearing, and hand washing, as well as continue to get their annual flu shot and keep up with their usual treatment and doctor visits.

No matter how busy our healthcare systems have gotten during the pandemic, one thing has not changed — If you’re having symptoms of a heart attack or stroke – call 911.

Dr. Cuevas urges people, “Don’t sit it out and wait for things to get better at home — seek help immediately. The safest place to be if you’re having a heart attack or a stroke is in the hospital.”
