As we head into the holi-daze there’s an abundance of office parties, family gatherings and other food-centered social happenings that you want to/have been invited to/are feeling pressure to contribute something to the table. Been there, done that – here’s a couple ideas if you need them.
First things first: store-bought is fine. Care for yourself first, whatever that looks like. You have options – baked goods, fruit, veggies and hummus, cheese and crackers or something of the heat-up-and-serve variety – and there’s no shame in grabbing something readymade to share with others. If you want to dress it up, just add a cute bowl or plate instead of the store packaging.

AltFest 2025 was a memorable day of creativity, community and mild chaos (mostly in a fun way).
Everyone showed up for our Battle of the Bands except for the bands, which certainly affected the outcome.

But thankfully everyone else was gracious and hung out for a while.

Our Monster Pageant was trimmed down to a costume contest honoring all kinds of fits, and we awarded two of the three custom 3D-printed trophies near the end of the event. (Grimm, if you’re reading this, check your email – you won Second Place!)

Other highlights of AltFest 2025 included: Workshops on basic printmaking and punkstyle fabric patches
A makerspace equipped for making button pins, collages, tarot cards (see above), zines, scratch art masks and whatever else folks could come up with
A temporary tattoo parlor with a real tattoo artist free-handing designs using temporary tattoo ink, as well as materials to DIY your own design, stencils and traditional temporary tattoos in a variety of aesthetics
Books and movies related to the themes and/or vibes of AltFest (still accessible for check-out via tinyurl.com/AltFestList )

We’ve been hearing about a new venue called The Spot.
Rumor has it that it’s a cafe which sometimes hosts live music and open mic nights. But the only thing we ’ ve been able to verify so far is its location via MapQuest. We’re working on getting more information for those curious about what’s happening in the local music scene, and will share once we learn something new!

What food or beverage do you crave around this time of year?
fancy hot chocolate, so many kinds of teas, BREAD, cinnamon anything, caramel apples.
Veggie pot pie. full stop. - Zoe
-Primal Opossum
Butternut squash, cranberries, pumpkin bread, traditional meats (smoked turkey and ham) and casseroles (green bean and broccoli cheese), plus warm chai lattes and apple cider. (I also crave dill pickles and black olives with my harvest / holiday season meals.)
-Granny Anarchy
My mom’s custom hot chocolate mix, mashed potatoes, apple cider, and anything with cinnamon. -Jackalope
