THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT NUMBER 89 OF OKLAHOMA COUNTY, OKLAHOMA, MET IN A REGULAR MEETING IN THE BOARD ROOM, ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, 900 NORTH KLEIN, MONDAY, JANUARY 5, 1981, AT 7:00 P.M.

PRESENT:

Delbert Hamm, President Betty Hill, Vice President Jean Brody, Member Floyd Donwerth, Member Hurl on J. Dulan, Member Susan Hermes, Member Armond H. Start, Member

Others present: Thomas W. Payzant, Superintendent; Vivian Stevenson, Clerk; William Bleakley, Attorney; Donald H. Ladd, Treasurer; Central Office staff members; representatives from professional groups, the news media, and other interested persons. The meeting was called to order by Dr. Hamm and Mrs. Hermes gave the invocation.

Dr. Hamm welcomed all of the visitors present.

Roll call established that all of the board members were present.

MINUTESvOF PREVIOUS MEETINGS A motion was made by Mr. Donwerth and seconded by Mr. Dulan for approval of the minutes of December 15 and 18, 1980 as presented. Dr. Start inquired about that portion of the minutes wherein the mill levy election was scheduled to be held in April in the Nomination Election, rather than in the General Election which is held in May.

Dr. Payzant responded that after the law was changed with regard to when some school districts would hold their school elections, Oklahoma City moved from the January date to the April date for the Nomination Election to be held, with the General Election • to be held only if in the Nomination Election a'candidate does not receive a majority of the votes cast, which is different to what it used to be, but making it feasible to hold the mill levy election in April. ^Of^STTrtral 1, the votes were as follows: Mrs. Brody, aye; Dr. Start, aye; Mrs. Hermes, 'aye;.. Mrs. Hill, aye; Mr. Dulan, aye; Mr. Donwerth, aye; and Dr. Hamm, aye. Dr. Hamm deci a red-'that the motion carried.

COMMITTEE RE8&RTS— BOARD MEMBERS* COMMENTS

Mrs. Hill commented that it being appropriate to recognize former students of the system, that hd3Trgs»attended the All-College Basetball Tournament, it was nice to see former basketball players from Oklahoma City in action again - Matt Clark, Southeast High School; and Leroy^Co.mbs, Star Spencer High School, and she was very pleased that Matt Clark won the Most^Xaluable Player award. Dr. Hamm stated that in the January issue of E’foi Delta Tampan, under the section of Young Leaders, recognition was given to 75 young leader^ in education, men and women who exemplified the Phi Delta Kappa ideals of research, service, and leadership in their profession al lives,’ ancL Dr. Ronald Schnee, Staff Development Supervisor, was one of the leaders included in that recognition. Dr. Hamm added that he thought this was a tribute to Dr. Schneq as well as to the Oklahoma City School System for having a man of that caliber on its staff.

Hamm called on Ms. Effie Grimes, who had registered to address the Board. Grimes spoke in behalf of Truman Fifth Year Center, asking that it remain open, the best interest of the community; that it not be considered for closing unless other schools were Closed as recommended by the Superintendent, and other.
