I can’t believe it’s already September. Hopefully that means cooler weather is on the way, along with a fresh month full of exciting library events and new resources to explore. September is also Library Card Sign-Up Month, and if you’re reading this and still don’t have a library card...what are you waiting for? Author E.L. Doctorow once said, “the three most important documents a free society gives are a birth certificate, a passport and a library card.” I couldn’t agree more.
A library card is so much more than just a piece of plastic (though it is a very nice piece of plastic). With it, you can borrow books, movies, music and audiobooks, all with no overdue fines. But that’s just the beginning.
Your library card gives you access to language learning tools like our new eResource, Transparent Language, as well as access to study and meeting rooms, reliable internet and computers, and most importantly, the knowledge and support of our amazing library staff.
In this issue you’ll hear directly from staff about what they love most about being library card holders. Speaking of library cards, we have a special edition card available for a very special occasion. Our very own Wright Library is turning 100 years old this year, and in honor of that milestone, we’ve created a commemorative centennial library card. You can pick one up at the Centennial Block Party at Wright Library on Sept. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., where we’ll celebrate with fun activities, history exhibits and community connection.
As we reflect on the library’s century of service, we are also embracing a new chapter in its story. While preparing for this anniversary, historical records came to light showing that John H. Wright, the library’s namesake, supported a 1921 resolution that restricted access to the city’s public libraries based on race. In alignment with our values, the Oklahoma City Council voted to accept the Metropolitan Library Commission's recommendation to rename the library. The new name will better reflect the welcoming, community-centered space the library represents today.
This decision is not about erasing history. The Wright name is literally carved into the building and will remain, as it is part of the physical structure. However, we will install a plaque that reflects the library's new name and honors the broader history of the location. Our goal is to ensure that the library system both acknowledges and preserves its past while also moving forward in a way that reflects our current values.
We will officially unveil the new name of the library during its centennial celebration, along with a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.
Dive into a day of festivities, remembrance, and new beginnings as we turn the page together. Let's look toward the next 100 years of library service in Oklahoma County.

Wright Library, the second branch in the Oklahoma City library system and the first to occupy its own building, celebrates its centennial this month. Located in Stockyards City, the small but historic library has served as a community cornerstone since it opened in 1925.
Founded through a partnership between city leaders and Baptist missionaries serving the Packingtown neighborhood, the branch was designed to serve a community of 10,000 people. Architect C.G. Beveridge designed the building, which opened with just 500 books. The facility’s first librarian, Miss Loma Jane Teuscher, described her work as “varied, interesting and greatly appreciated.”
The library quickly became a hub for a neighborhood previously underserved by reading resources. In its first year, more than 1,000 residents signed up for library cards. During the noon hour, packing plant workers stopped in to read or use reference materials, while children borrowed books in English for themselves and in Spanish for their families. A Spanish edition of "Robinson Crusoe" was especially popular.
By 1926, the collection had tripled in size, with westerns, mysteries and Spanish-language titles in high demand. Rev. Hale V. Davis, a local pastor, supported the library from the pulpit and in print, sharing updates through the church
newsletter "The Builder" and helping grow its reach.
Despite early skepticism, Wright Library became a beloved institution. By 1950, it was circulating 1,500 books a month and serving 2,000 cardholders with a collection of about 6,500 volumes.
Over the decades, the library evolved to meet community needs. A major refurbishment in 1995 brought central heating and air, ADA-compliant restrooms, updated lighting and furniture, and a custom circulation desk. In 1996, accessibility improvements were added, the building’s historic exterior was refreshed, and it was honored in the fourth edition of the Cowboy Christmas Tree Ornament series.
In 2000, to mark its 75th anniversary, the branch received public computers through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The most recent renovation, completed in May 2022, enhanced accessibility and technology while preserving features like the original fireplace.
Today, Wright Library continues to serve local families and workers with free Wi-Fi, mobile printing, computer access, and a full slate of programming. Visit metrolibrary.org/ locations/wright for more information.
The community is invited to celebrate this historic milestone with a free, family-friendly Block Party on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2101 Exchange Avenue in Stockyards City.
To mark its centennial, the library is hosting a celebration packed with fun for all ages, including:
• A meet-and-greet with the library’s mascot, Spoticus
• A special commemorative 100th Anniversary library card (while supplies last)
• A Stockyards-themed scavenger hunt running from September 1-27
• Arts and crafts for all ages
• Surprise activities that transport you back to 1925
• And more!
To learn more, scan the QR code.
The centennial celebration will officially turn the page on a new chapter in the building's history. The Metropolitan Library Commission and Oklahoma City Council have voted to change the library’s name.
This follows the discovery of historical records indicating that John H. Wright, the library’s namesake, supported a 1921 resolution that restricted access to the city’s public library based on race.
With the library’s 100th anniversary, the Metropolitan Library System is taking this opportunity to move forward in alignment with its values of equity and inclusion, with the name change effective Sept. 27. The new name will reflect the welcoming and community-centered space the location has become.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and there's never been a better time to discover all the amazing things your library card can do.
Your library card lets you borrow books, movies, music and more! And with no overdue fines, you can read and return on your schedule. Your card also gives you free access to eBooks, audiobooks, magazines and newspapers through apps like Libby, hoopla and PressReader. You can stream movies and documentaries on Kanopy, enjoy children’s eBooks through TumbleBooks, or introduce young readers to stories in multiple languages with Lote4Kids. But, your library card can also get you way more than just books!
Looking to pick up a new skill or learn a new language? Dive into resources like LinkedIn Learning, Mango Languages, Transparent Language and CreativeBug on hoopla. Whether you're interested in coding, knitting, cake decorating or something totally new, there’s something for every curiosity. If your new interest is exploring your roots, we've got you covered with Ancestry and all kinds of genealogical resources through our Special Collections and Research department.
Need a quiet space to work or meet? Many library branches offer meeting rooms you can reserve. And if you just need reliable internet, stop in and use our public computers and free Wi-Fi.
Our librarians are always here to help, whether you're tracking down a hard-to-find title, researching a topic, or just need a great recommendation. And if we don’t have what you're looking for, you can request it through an Interlibrary Loan.
Families and readers of all ages can also all take part in fun library programs like storytimes, book clubs, scavenger hunts, and seasonal reading challenges like Winter Reading or Summer Reading.
Whether you're learning, relaxing, or discovering something new, your library card is your ticket to it all.
In honor of Library Card Sign-Up Month, we asked our Library staff to share some of their favorite library cardholder perks. Here’s what they said!
“The Experience Pass is such a wonderful way to patronize the arts and history of Oklahoma. Escaping bothersome weather, while getting a cultural experience, is an awesome combination of things. Shoutout to the First Americans Museum and Oklahoma City Museum of Art for their events and rotating exhibits!”
- Help Desk Technician Colin Morrow
I have used Ancestry at the library. I love that I can access so many records then email them to myself to upload to my account. I have also used the newspaper archives and map collections to find information on my ancestors. For instance, with HistoryGeo, I found the record of my great-great grandfather's land in Indiana, which turned out to be right down the street from where my sister lived.”
Assistant Library Manager II Elicia Medaris
“I love having access to product reviews through Consumer Reports and New York Times. Having a wide variety of news access is awesome too.”
- Access Specialist Tricia Ross
“If I am unable (or unwilling) to spend the money on a book or graphic novel, I almost always go to Libby. Nine times out of ten, Libby has the book, and I am able to read it just like I would had I bought it digitally through the Kindle store. I usually use this to read things that I know I will only read once (like "The Walking Dead" comic series) or things that are new/expensive.”
- Librarian Taylor Stober
“By bringing in presenters for library programs or partnering with groups like the Science Museum of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City Zoo to provide take-home kits or passes, the library connects people with other groups that they otherwise may not know about or be able to access.”
- Access Specialist Jana Henderson
“There are enough factoids and artifacts (digital and physical) contained in Metro Library's Special Collections to last a lifetime of research.”
Library Aide Jim Nimmo
“I have always wanted to own a library, but my house isn't big enough to accommodate the library from ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ and it can get expensive to buy every book in existence. My library card gives me the ability to be around and read as many books as I want, without the cost or hoarding of books!”
- Library Manager I Ashley Milinkovich
“My favorite part of having a library card is how much I save on books! Before working at the library, I would just buy the books that I was even minutely interested in reading because my schedule didn't really leave time for me to stop at the library. Now, I'm able to get all the books I'm interested in and save some money in the process. I've turned on my reading history so I can even see the amount of money I've saved by checking out books.”
Digital Services and Social Media Manager Megan Filipowski
It’s State Fair season! Last year, Special Collections Librarian Judie Matthews wrote a fascinating piece on the history of the Oklahoma State Fair, including how it nearly disappeared in 1923 during a political showdown involving the governor and the KKK. In 1924, Oklahomans rallied to bring it back bigger than ever, drawing record crowds, and introducing new events.

Plus, did you know that Metro's Special Collections Department has souvenirs from every era of the State Fair in its collections? Shown above are a small pitcher from the original Fairground site near NE 10th and Eastern, and a ceramic plate showcasing the buildings at the current site of the Fairground, its home since 1954.

In “Checked Out,” Louise works a cruddy retail job (like many of us probably have). She yearns for what she’s truly passionate about. For her, it’s creating a graphic novel about the story of a carrier pigeon that saved soldiers during WWI, a subject she’s obsessed with.
When she applies to be a library page and actually lands the position, she’s elated. Not only will she escape her dead-end job, but also she’ll be surrounded by one of her other passions, books. Plus, a library like the one she’ll work at has got to have something helpful for her pigeon war history research.
This graphic novel’s art is messy, but the story matches it perfectly. Louise deals with things like struggling with her crush on someone who doesn’t feel the same way, going on terrible dates, and feelings of insecurity; each of these is an equally messy experience that fits right in with the artwork. “Checked Out” delivers a coming-of-age tale great for creatives trying to make a living, while still pursuing their passions.

Karla Cornejo Villavicencio’s “Catalina” is a raw, poetic and defiantly intimate novel that arrives like a thunderclap— especially fitting as we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. The novel follows Catalina, a young Ecuadorian American woman, navigating her mental health, family trauma and the experience of living undocumented in a country that demands invisibility from those it refuses to fully recognize. Catalina’s voice is unflinching and urgent—her story jagged yet lyrical, rich in both intellectual and emotional honesty. What sets “Catalina” apart, is its unfiltered portrayal of a Latinx identity that defies stereotype or romanticization. “Catalina” doesn’t offer clean resolutions, but it does offer a truth that’s rarely found in American literature about immigration, mental illness and womanhood. In celebrating Hispanic heritage, we often focus on pride and perseverance— but “Catalina” reminds us of that rage, pain, contradiction and self-reclamation are also part of the story.

“The Littlest Library” is a heartwarming story that celebrates the power of books, the importance of community and the beauty of starting over.
Jess Metcalf steps out of her comfort zone when she impulsively buys a fixer-upper cottage in a quaint English village that could use a boost in community spirit. Along with her new home, Jess inherits responsibility for an out-of-service, red telephone box on her property. Using her beloved grandmother’s book collection and her experience as a librarian, the telephone box becomes the Littlest Library.
As the days pass, the magic of the little library spreads through the village and ultimately changes Jess’s life in the best possible way.
“The Littlest Library” is a lovely reminder of how books –and the spaces that house them, no matter how small – can change lives, build community and open doors to more than we could have imagined for our lives.

As an avid fan of Arthur since childhood, it only felt right to review one of Marc Brown's beloved books for Library Card Sign-Up Month! The book explores Arthur's adventures in writing. Arthur quickly discovers that a simple story may not be what everyone's looking for, so he begins to write about elephants on the moon and purple corn.
After a little song and dance, Arthur decides Planet Shmellafint may be too far-reaching, so he tells the story of how he got his dog, Pal, and everyone loves it! Arthur learns that not everything has to be bombastic and exaggerated, but that people just want to hear a story about your life and how you lead it.
