New Info! Since I joined Metro Library, I have been impressed by the way our staff continues to learn, adapt and find new ways to serve our growing community. One example is the opening of the new East Edmond Library next month. Edmond is growing, and our new library will help us meet the needs of that growing community. Our existing Edmond Library will remain open. It has long been our busiest location, so having a second library in Edmond is an exciting step forward. Over the past 12 months, more than 13 million people have visited our libraries, used our computers and technology, or checked out books and eResources. That growth makes it more important than ever to support the people who keep our libraries running. Each Oct., we set aside a day for staff to learn, connect and grow together during our Staff Development Day. Our library locations will be closed Oct. 12 while staff take part in learning and professional development. Our staff do important work every day, whether they are helping library visitors find what they need, supporting our administrative offices, keeping our buildings running or making sure our technology works. It takes a lot of people working together to keep 19, soon to be 20, libraries running. I feel lucky to work alongside people who care deeply about our community and our mission. Their dedication makes Metro Library what it is, and I am proud to support their continued growth and leadership.

Emmett Truesdale has been overweight his entire life. He’s tried every diet and every weight loss “hack”, only to stay trapped in his body’s size. When he’s offered a chance to participate in a clinical trial for new weight-loss product Obexity, he takes it, despite his best friend feeling unsettled by the trial’s promises. Emmett is accepted, and he starts shedding weight startlingly fast. But Obexity has some nasty side-effects like blackouts and disturbing cravings. “Nothing Tastes as Good” delivers harsh commentary on societal and internalized fatphobia. Emmett’s treatment makes him genuinely consider if it’s worth it to keep taking Obexity, even after he wakes up covered in blood. Is it worth it to be thin? Emmett’s deep, critical self-loathing really stuck with me. And it’s all over something that was never really a failure of his, but the failure of those around him. Nora Roberts’ “Lost Bride Trilogy” is a treat for supernatural hauntedhouse enjoyers and romance enjoyers alike. In “Inheritance,” Sonya inherits a Victorian mansion from her father’s secret twin, haunted by seven brides murdered by a vengeful witch. Sonya must break the curse, and thankfully, the ghosts are eager to help. The ghosts also clean the house, tend the garden and keep the fireplaces lit. I wouldn’t mind a ghost cleaning my kitchen! One of the ghosts is Sonya’s grandmother and a lost bride. Their interactions tugged at my heartstrings but also made me laugh. In second novel, “The Mirror,” Sonya’s best friend Cleo, boyfriend Trey and newfound cousin Owen join the adventure. A mysterious mirror becomes a portal to the past, a path to the murders, bringing Sonya closer to the truth. Then “The Seven Rings” brings our ScoobyDoo gang to a final showdown and a race to break the curse and set the seven brides free. I thoroughly enjoyed the series. I also listened to the audiobooks, which brought the characters, including the ghosts, to life. When Dealing with Dragons Dana Swift
Available formats: Book, eAudiobook Location: YSCIENCE FICTION SWI
Humans bond with dragons and use their magic to craft metal, albeit through a class-based system ranked by precious metals like copper, bronze and silver. Farren is a copper-crafter who works at her father’s dragon veterinary practice, caring for the majestic beasts in a holistic, compassionate way. Her school rival James is a dragon rider and silver-crafter whose father exploits the creatures to benefit his business empire. When James and his dragon are injured in a race, he uses it as an opportunity to escape his family and intern with Farren’s father while his dragon recovers. Farren and James are both hiding huge secrets (not including James’ longtime crush on Farren) that might end up threatening the entire dragon kingdom. Can they keep their secrets and true feelings hidden to protect their way of life? Readers looking for a YA-friendly romantasy will enjoy the dragon-riding action and fantasy lore paired with a standard “enemies to lovers” trope and a cozy setting full of dragon caretaking. Check this out if you’re looking for a YA title to read or share this TeenTober! Reviewed By: Emily Williams Emily Williams is the teen services manager for Metro Library. This story takes place in 1899. Sonia, a naturalist illustrator, takes a job illustrating an entomologist (bug scientist)’s insect collection. With the local folklore, eerie settings, and strange animals, T. Kingfisher takes the reader on a creepy, disturbing journey. This novel is short but mighty. The author pulls elements from popular tropes in the horror genre, yet this book still stands as a one-of-a-kind story, in true T. Kingfisher fashion. Trigger warning: If you are even a little bit squeamish around insects (especially parasitic bugs), this book may not be for you.
