new info

Last month was an exciting one for our system. We celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Stockyards City Library and welcomed new faces during Library Card Sign-Up Month. I’m so grateful for the energy and engagement of our staff and supporters like you, and I can’t wait to carry that momentum into October.

On Oct. 13, our staff will take part in a Staff Development Day, a day set aside for training, collaboration and growth across the system. While our libraries will be closed to the public that day, please know this time is dedicated to improving the services and experiences we provide for our guests.

I can hardly believe we’re already stepping into October. The crispness of fall is in the air, and with it comes a full month of cultural celebrations, Halloween fun and new opportunities to connect at your local library.

This is my first official “spooky season” with the library system, and I can’t wait to see how things come alive. (There’s probably a zombie joke in there somewhere...)

We’re thrilled to continue celebrating Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month with a vibrant lineup of programs from exploring the iconic art of Frida Kahlo to experiencing traditional Panamanian dances. These events honor the rich contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities. I’m proud to be part of a library and community that values cultural diversity and shared experiences.

If you’re in the mood for something spooky, we’ve got that too. Join us for Halloween Carnivals, Paranormal Fest, Spooktacular Storytimes and more. Children and adults alike can enjoy costume parades, themed events and plenty of fall fun across our branches.

October is also Archives Month, the perfect time to explore your roots and preserve your family’s history. Our experts are here to help with genealogy, heirloom preservation and managing your digital legacy through a series of engaging workshops. And remember, we’re always your go-to hub for genealogy and research all year ‘round, no matter what rabbit holes you find yourself exploring.

Here’s to a season of learning, celebration and community.

Warmly,

Eighth ParanormalAnnualFest: Waning Moon

The Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library is set to host its eighth annual Paranormal Fest on Saturday, October 18, transforming the building into a hub of supernatural exploration and eerie fun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This year’s event, themed “Waning Moon,” promises a full day of activities for all ages — including panels, handson crafts, a spooky escape room and a family-friendly film marathon.

“It’s a full day of spine-tingling fun for all ages,” said Kim Ventrella, librarian and event organizer. “Whether you're a budding cryptozoologist, a future ghost hunter or just curious about the paranormal, we have something for everyone to explore at Paranormal Fest.”

Now in its eighth year, Paranormal Fest has become a popular fall tradition, attracting families, paranormal enthusiasts and curious visitors alike, blending eerie entertainment with interactive, educational experiences designed to spark the imagination.

One of the day’s highlights is the Vendor Fair, held in the library’s atrium from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., where guests can browse a selection of booths featuring local handmade oddities, metaphysical supplies, tarot readings and ghosthunting gear.

“Downstairs, we’ll have a mini vendor fair where visitors can stock up on spooky gifts and chat with local paranormal groups,” Ventrella said. “It’s a great chance to connect with the community and maybe even uncover a few ghost stories.”

Upstairs, the Friends Room on the fourth floor will host an all-day paranormal craft room, with projects for both children and adults.

“If you’re feeling crafty, we’ve got projects for everyone… creepy, cute and everything in between,” said Ventrella.

The fourth floor auditorium will also feature the Family Fright Movie Marathon, screening a series of eerie but ageappropriate films throughout the day. This year’s lineup includes:

MirrorMask (1 hr 45 min)

The Dark Crystal (1 hr 35 min)

The House at the End of the Street (1 hr 45 min)

Hungry Ghost Diner (1 hr 56 min)

be supervised by an accompanying adult. The interactive experience challenges participants to unlock a mystery tied to the supernatural theme.

Admission is free and open to the public. Costumes are welcome and encouraged, though not required.

Whether you’re a ghost hunter, fantasy fan, curious kid or lover of the unexplained, Paranormal Fest: Waning Moon is sure to cast a spell on all who attend.

"We Came to Welcome You"

JFICTION TIR

Available formats: Book, eBook, Kindle, eAudiobook

After a rough year of plagiarism accusations and being put on probation, Sol thinks her luck has finally changed. She and her wife, Alice, are thrilled to buy a house in the luxurious, gated community of Maneless Grove. Immediately after moving in, the Homeowners Association begins hounding them to join and sign the contract. Although Sol and Alice are not initially interested, Alice secretly signs the contract without telling Sol. Soon after, strange things begin happening. No one around her seems to notice the odd behavior of the neighborhood children or doors and stairs that suddenly disappear. Is Sol losing her mind or is there more going on with this neighborhood than meets the eye?

“We Came to Welcome You” is what you would get if Jordan Peele wrote the Stepford Wives. This psychological horror is the perfect pairing of creepy and the mundane. Tirado weaves in issues of mental health, racism and family obligation to this expertly crafted horror story worthy of the Twilight Zone.

Kristin Williamson is the Children’s Services Manager with the Outreach and Engagement Services Department. When she isn't leading book clubs and having story times, she can probably be found playing guitar, writing songs or designing and sewing her own clothes.

"Wings

of Red " James W. Jennings

Available formats: Book, Large Print, eBook, Kindle

The protagonist of “Wings of Red,” June Papers lives between couches, bodegas, gyms, trains—and pages, where he meticulously journals his life as a homeless, highly educated public school teacher. With short chapters and a conversational style, “Wings of Red” introduces the reader to both the rhythm of June’s struggle and the colorful (literally: his brother’s name is Blue) characters around him. While weighed down by crushing debt, the stain of prior felony convictions, and the physical and mental strain of being homeless, June watches the wonders and small miracles of the Big Apple and records it all.

“Wings of Red” calls the reader to empathize for those upon which society often casts judgment. Through June we learn the importance of humanizing others, no matter how different our social class. And we learn to value the little things: “All that really matters is living,” June writes, “that you opened yourself up to the full possibility of the experience.”

"BuzzFeed Unsolved Supernatural: 101 True Tales of Hauntings, Demons, and the Paranormal"

Bergara and Shane Madej

Available formats: Book

As an avid fan of the Ghoul Boys since their BuzzFeed beginnings, this book is a spooky treat filled with stories of the paranormal and anything unusual. I cannot recommend the audiobook enough, as the boys' banter will leave you in stitches as they discuss Bigfoot, haunted houses and other freaky subjects.

If you love learning about cryptids or notorious killers, this is the book for you! Each section of the book is divided into categories, ranging from haunted hotels to ghostly towns, which allows for easy reading and listening. This book is perfect for your next Halloweenthemed read.

"Never

Whistle at Night: An Indigenous Dark Fiction Anthology"

Van Alst Jr.

Available formats: Book, eBook, Kindle, eAudiobook

A collection of Indigenous stories from award-winning and bestselling authors, this dark anthology dives into horror, sciencefiction, fantasy and crime genres with lyrical writing, clever dialogue, and of course some truly terrifying monsters. While the stories highlight the creepier elements lurking in the dark, they also include social commentary about what it means to be Indigenous in our modern world — including a body horror story that explores the cost of being part Native American.

If you're looking for uniquely scary stories this Halloween season, you'll find horrifying bugs, ghastly ghosts, magic and spirits all in one book.

This anthology of bone-chilling short stories will not only make you want to sleep with the light on, but ensure that you do as the title instructs — never whistle at night.
