new info November is a month for reflection, gratitude and celebration—and at the Metropolitan Library System, we have so many opportunities to do all three.

This month, we’re proud to honor Native American Heritage Month with programs that celebrate the stories, culture and creativity of Indigenous peoples. Don’t miss the chance to hear from Chef Loretta Barrett Oden, an Emmy Award–winning chef, author and member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She’ll share how food connects us to history and tradition—and even cook a dish featuring the “Three Sisters” (corn, beans and squash) on Nov. 22 at Belle Isle Library.

We’ll also explore the remarkable life of Oklahoman Jim Thorpe, one of the greatest athletes in history and a proud member of the Sac and Fox Nation. In this issue, Special Collections Librarian Lisa Bradley shares an insightful look at his life and enduring impact in her feature article. You can learn even more by joining us for a live podcast recording exploring Thorpe’s story on Nov. 2 at Belle Isle Library.

Throughout November, you can experience Indigenous genealogy workshops, a Choctaw Social Dance demonstration, teen beaded bracelet making and coil pottery classes—all part of our systemwide celebration of Native American Heritage Month.

I’m also thrilled to share some exciting news: we’ve named our first-ever Poet Laureate, Hallie Waugh. Hallie is a talented local poet whose work captures the beauty and emotion found in everyday life. She will serve as the library’s ambassador in promoting poetry. Through public programming and the celebration of poetry, we hope you discover new means of expression and new paths to understanding our world. You can read Hallie’s poem “Used Book” and learn more about her creative journey inside this issue.

As we approach Veterans Day, our libraries are honoring the service and sacrifice of those who have served with meaningful events throughout the month. Pick up a Family Interview Take-Home Kit at Ralph Ellison Library on Nov. 8, join a discussion about women veterans in history at Southern Oaks Library, also on Nov. 8. You can also visit the Missing Man Table on view all month at Warr Acres Library.

Finally, our youngest library friends can look forward to DiNovember, with dino-themed activities like rock painting at Almonte Library on Nov. 27, a Tea Rex Party at Edmond Library on Nov. 22, and even a “Dinos on the Loose!” scavenger hunt at Capitol Hill Library!

Native American Heritage Month with

CHEF LORETTA BARRETT ODEN

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the Metropolitan Library System is proud to host Emmy Awardwinning Chef Loretta Barrett Oden of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation at the Belle Isle Library Nov. 22, 2-3:30 p.m.

Chef Oden, Chef and Consultant at Restaurant 39 at the First Americans Museum and author of the acclaimed cookbook “Corn Dance,” will share insights from her lifelong exploration of Indigenous food and the traditions that shape them.

“Food is our story,” Oden said in an interview. “It speaks to our culture and our diversity and brings us together. It’s our medicine, our love language.”

At the heart of her presentation is the story of food as connection to land, to culture and to one another. Guests will learn about the importance of the “Three Sisters” (corn, beans, and squash) through a live cooking demonstration of a traditional salad featuring the trio that has sustained Indigenous communities for generations.

“Those plants have sustained their peoples for centuries through their own harmony and balance with one another,” Oden said about the “Three Sisters” and their importance on Native American history.

Oden's work celebrates the diversity of Indigenous cuisine, stretching from the Arctic regions of Nunavut to the southern reaches of Tierra del Fuego. Her work “Corn Dance” explores these origins, tracing how each individual ingredient can represent so much more.

“Every seed, every flavor, even every method of preparation carries generations of knowledge and care,” she said.

The event also holds personal meaning for Oden, who shared that Belle Isle Library is especially significant to her 4

due to years of browsing the kids’ section with her children when they were little.

“The Belle Isle Library is near and dear to my heart,” Oden said. “So I’m really excited to be presenting at this event.”

Through her storytelling and cooking, Oden aims to expand understanding of Native cultures and their culinary traditions, emphasizing their richness and diversity. The event, just one of many honoring Native American heritages this month, is an opportunity to explore Indigenous cuisine and the deep connections between food, history and community.

Honoring Native American Heritage:

THE LEGACY OF JIM THORPE

The Carlisle Indians, 1912.

In August 1990, President George H. W. Bush officially designated November as Native American Heritage Month—a time to celebrate the rich cultures, histories and contributions of Indigenous peoples across the United States.

Among the most iconic Native American figures in sports history is Oklahoman Jim Thorpe, a man whose athletic prowess and resilience made him a legend. Born on May 22, 1887 (some records say 1888) near Bellemont in Indian Territory, Thorpe was a member of the Sac and Fox Nation, and also had Potawatomi, Menominee, Kickapoo, Irish, and French ancestry. His Native name, Wa-tho-huck, meaning “Bright Path,” foreshadowed a life of brilliance and impact.

Thorpe’s athletic talent emerged early. He excelled in sports like ballroom dancing, ice skating, and swimming, but he is best known for track and field, baseball and football. His formal athletic journey began at the Haskell Institute in Kansas, where he discovered football. Though too young to join the team, he was already known as the fastest boy on the field.

In 1903, Thorpe enrolled at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania. At just 5’5” and 115 pounds, he quickly rose to prominence in football, playing halfback by 1908. After 6

a brief stint in semiprofessional baseball, he returned to Carlisle in 1911, leading the football team to victories over Ivy League powerhouses like Harvard and Army. He earned All-American honors in both 1911 and 1912.

Thorpe’s athleticism extended beyond the gridiron. At Carlisle, he became a standout in track and field, earning a spot on the U.S. team for the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm.

There, he won gold medals in both the pentathlon and decathlon, setting a world record in the pentathlon that stood until 1948.

However, in 1913, it was revealed that Thorpe had played semiprofessional baseball in 1909—a violation of Olympic amateurism rules. His medals were stripped, and his name was removed from the record books. It wasn’t until 2022 that the International Olympic Committee officially reinstated Thorpe as the sole winner of both events, restoring his rightful place in history.

Following the Olympics, Thorpe continued to play professional football and baseball for two decades. In 1920, he became the first president of the American Professional Football Association, the precursor to the NFL. He played for teams including the

Canton Bulldogs, Cleveland Indians, Rock Island Independents and Chicago Cardinals, retiring from athletics in 1941.

Thorpe’s legacy is not just one of athletic excellence. It’s a story of perseverance, cultural pride and trailblazing representation for Native Americans in sports.

“Night of the Living Rez,” a collection of interconnected short stories set in Maine on the Penobscot Indian Nation, captures the reality of life on a reservation through the perspective of the main protagonist, David. As a young boy, he discovers a jar that holds an old curse, setting off the unraveling of his family. David, known later in life as Dee, takes readers on his personal journey of loneliness and isolation among his own community. However, it is his people and the reservation that always offer him the greatest sense of comfort when he needs it most. While Dee battles addiction, poverty and generational trauma, he also finds ways to honor and celebrate tradition. The dysfunctional yet deep familial bonds portrayed in this book are an example of authentic storytelling.

Cory and Ingrid keep extending their separation, both discovering new aspects of themselves and reexamining what they thought happiness looked like.

While her life is in turmoil and the bad decisions seem to keep piling up, Ingrid's unrequited interest in Macon grows as he proves to be a devoted and fascinating friend. The slowest possible burn kindles the biggest fire in this cozy, uplifting and tender romance from a master of the craft. Set in libraries, bookstores, old houses and tiny homes, Perkins masterfully delivers quirky small-town charm, characters you wished were real and one of the best romances you'll read this year. A perfect autumn read for fans of happily ever afters.

Readers are taken on a journey through time as we learn about a 1999 murder investigation, a 2020 Supreme Court case, and, through Nagle’s own personal connection, the 1830’s removal of some Native nations from their homelands to the west. The book masterfully weaves timelines together to reveal direct correlations between Cherokee history and the continuing fight for Native American rights and sovereignty to this day.

Nagle, a member of Cherokee Nation, dives into the events that led to and followed the Trail of Tears as well as her own family history with the expertly crafted eye of a dogged journalist and storyteller. "By the Fire We Carry” blends history, biography and elements of a legal thriller into a journey through corruption, betrayal and determination, resulting in a book that felt impossible to put down.

Available formats: Book, eBook, Kindle, eAudiobook This year’s Caldecott Winner, “Chooch Helped,” is the story of Sissy, an older sister learning how to be patient with her twoyear old brother, Chooch, who “helps” his family with all kinds of chores (often destroying things in the process). It’s a funny tale of toddler mayhem and a warm story between two siblings.

“Chooch Helped” is also the artistic creation of two Cherokee women from Oklahoma. They weaved a sense of culture and place into the pages, from the soft textures of fields and creeks to the wet clay of pinch pots and the pleats on Sissy’s Cherokee ribbon skirt.

The language is simple and repetitive but powerful and great for littles around Chooch’s age. With rich visual storytelling, use of the Cherokee language and a wealth of informational notes in the back of the book, “Chooch Helped” is an engaging, emotional pick for educators and older siblings alike.

Metropolitan Library System’s First-Ever Poet Laureate

The Metropolitan Library System is proud to announce its inaugural Metro Library Poet Laureate: Hallie Waugh.

This new, paid opportunity recognizes and supports a local poet who will serve as the library’s ambassador for poetry. As Poet Laureate, Waugh will promote the art form across the metro area through public programming, community outreach and literary events. In partnership with library staff, she will lead poetryfocused initiatives designed to inspire readers and writers of all ages.

Waugh’s writing explores the intersection of embodiment, spirituality and connection to place. She holds an MFA in Poetry, and her work has appeared or is forthcoming in publications such as “New York Quarterly,” “Windhover,” “Dappled Things,” “Mom Egg Review,” “Motherwell” and “Ekstasis,” among others.

A seasoned educator, Waugh has taught poetry at the collegiate level and is passionate about making poetry an accessible part of everyday life.

“I am honored, and so pleasantly surprised, to be the inaugural Poet Laureate for the Metropolitan Library System,” Waugh said.

In addition to her poetry, Waugh works as a copywriter, nonprofit grant writer and brand strategist with the local agency Cooper House. She lives in Oklahoma City with her high school sweetheart, their two young sons, and a lively Boxer mix. A regular at both the Belle Isle Library and Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library, she is often spotted with her children and an ambitious stack of books.

Waugh also publishes a twice-monthly Substack newsletter titled Weekend Exhale (halliewaugh.substack.com), where she shares poetry and personal reflections.

In her work, Waugh draws inspiration from the idea that language itself is inherently poetic.

In his essay “The Poet,” Ralph Waldo Emerson writes, “every word was once a poem,” — a sentiment Waugh deeply connects with.

“I'm a firm believer that the forces of metaphor and verse possess a primal, instinctive sort of wisdom that can help us navigate complex times with nuance and curiosity,” Waugh said.

“I'm not sure we've ever needed those two qualities more than in our current moment.”

The Poet Laureate program is part of Metro Library’s broader mission to foster creative expression and meaningful dialogue through the arts. Plans include in-library programming and writing exercises, along with other poetry programming in Nov..

Waugh will be joining the Society of Urban Poets at their meeting on Nov. 17 at Ralph Ellison Library.

“During my time in this role, I sincerely hope to celebrate and extend Oklahoma's rich poetic culture, which is growing by the day,” Waugh said. “Here's to more poetry and the embodied awe it can gift to us."

The Metropolitan Library System looks forward to all that Hallie Waugh will bring to this role and the ways poetry will flourish in our community under her leadership.

Used Book

(with a nod to Billy Collins) I am feeling particularly dignified tonight, as I pour a glass of Malbec and settle in to read the used poetry book I ordered online.

A thorn in the side of my academic evening alone: the book’s pages are littered with large, peppy pencil marks, offering dumb summaries: Having fun with his wife!, paddling in a canoe!, and every few lines, set off with asterisks, the enlightening metaphor and imagery.

I have the urge to scribble my response— It’s a poem, dummy—but instead grab a chunk of eraser and undo the former owner’s commentary, then sit back to enjoy lines about a hummingbird that now ring with even more sweetness, its margins free from the marks of one dense reader.

Imagine my surprise, then, when a receipt from a home improvement store, issued twenty years ago, in California, tumbles from the book’s center. This anti-reader is alive to me now. I see her toting the book around, savoring lines between errands. I want to tell her, Go on, then— ride those iambs right on into a world far more enchanting and brilliant than your own.

Stockyards City Library: 100 Years of Service

This fall, Stockyards City Library, one of the oldest in the Metropolitan Library System celebrated a remarkable milestone: 100 years of service. We’re excited to take a moment to reflect on the library’s rich history. We also celebrate the joyful moments we shared with the community, from a ribbon cutting to a visit from a beloved former librarian.

As the second library within the Metropolitan Library System and the first to occupy its own dedicated building, Stockyards City Library has long been a cornerstone of the neighborhood. It opened in 1925 through a partnership between city leaders and Baptist missionaries to serve the 10,000 residents of the Packingtown area.

Within its first year, more than 1,000 people had signed up for library cards.

Packing plant workers would visit during their lunch breaks, and children borrowed books in both English and Spanish. By 1926, the library’s collection had tripled with westerns, mysteries and Spanish-language books. By 1950, it was circulating 1,500 books each month to more than 2,000 cardholders.

Centennial celebrations included a free, family-friendly Centennial Block Party. Hundreds of guests enjoyed a Stockyardsthemed scavenger hunt leading up to the event, arts and crafts for all ages, games, a visit from library mascot Spoticus, snow cones, face painting, a commemorative library card and more.

“Our Centennial Block Party was a wonderful success and the perfect way to wrap up our month-long celebration,” said Engagement Specialist Stacy Harris, who helped lead the event. “It was such a joy to see people of all ages having fun, playing games, interacting with staff, and loading up on library swag and books.”

Harris is the heart of today’s Stockyards City Library. She expressed deep gratitude to everyone who joined the celebration and to the staff who made it all possible.

“It was inspiring to see the entire system come together with creativity and effort to make the Centennial truly memorable,” she said.

The Stockyards City Library Renaming Ceremony

This year also marked the official renaming of the branch to Stockyards City Library, a change that honors its history and location, with an official renaming ceremony attended by community leaders including Ward 6 Councilperson JoBeth Hamon and State Representative Arturo Alonso.

One of the most touching moments came when Miss Marie, a librarian who worked at the branch 25 years ago, returned for a visit. She shared warm memories of her time at the library, including stories about nearby car repair shops, friendly neighbors and the vibrant community she served.

She also remembered how nervous she felt during her initial interview: “When I went for the interview, the women in there were young,” she said. “So, I went home and told my husband, ‘I was the oldest person they interviewed today, so I probably won't get this job.’ But they called me, and then I came here.”

Looking around at the sleek new computers now in use, Miss Marie said, “The library is so modernized.”

Miss Marie was also there in 2000 when the branch received its first public computers through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, marking its 75th anniversary.

That milestone came shortly after a 1995 renovation, which brought central air, ADA-compliant restrooms, and other important updates. The historic exterior was refreshed in 1996.

The most recent renovation, completed in May 2022, preserved beloved features like the original fireplace while upgrading technology and accessibility.

As Stockyards City Library begins its second century, it remains deeply rooted in the community and continues to embrace the future, just as it has for the past 100 years.
