Info Magazine - June and July 2026

new info

Summer at the library holds a special place for so many people in our community. It’s the season when kids claim the library as their home base while school is out and families gather for storytimes and programs. Visitors of all ages use this seasonal shift as an opportunity to learn something new. There’s an unmistakable energy this time of year: a sense of curiosity, connection and discovery that brings the library to life in new ways.

That spirit is at the heart of our annual Summer Reading challenge, which runs through June and July and has been a library tradition for nearly 100 years. From young readers setting their first reading goals to teens volunteering and gaining meaningful experience, Summer Reading creates lasting memories and lifelong habits. The program is especially important for school-age children, helping prevent the “summer slide,” when students can lose some of the academic progress they’ve worked so hard to achieve. Summer Reading keeps learning on track while inviting readers of all ages to discover something new, whether that means stepping outside a comfort zone or simply making time for stories. I hope you’ll join us for this year’s theme, “Unearth a Story” and connect with your own reading goals.

In this issue of Info Magazine, you’ll also find new ways to explore the library through online resources you may not know about. One of my favorite parts of talking with community members is seeing their surprise at the breadth of what the library offers. More than just eBooks, our digital resources include everything from small engine repair tools to career resources, even resources for small business owners. For whatever this season has in store, the library is a great place to start. This summer, I encourage you to discover how Metro Library can support your goals through our eResources and beyond.

Of course, summer also means a full calendar of events across our locations. Our Neighborhood Arts programs return as a seasonal favorite. This programming brings music, dance and visual arts to the community in partnership with the Arts Council Oklahoma City, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Oklahoma Arts Council. Performances and experiences take place across library locations and at Scissortail Park and Rodeo Cinema with guests like the Oklahoma Violin Ensemble.

You’ll also find a wide range of events from hands-on crafts and educational programs to celebrations of history, culture and creativity. Highlights include author visits from Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone, as well as Oklahoma City’s own James Cooper.

Whether you’re exploring a new interest, building a skill, or simply looking for a place to spend time, the library offers a space to do it all.

This summer, I invite you to make the library part of your routine.

Whether you’re here to learn, create, connect or unwind, there’s something waiting for you, and we’re glad to be part of your journey.

Warm regards,

Summer Reading is from June 1-July 31 and for all ages.

10 June & July Events

There is no shortage of events this summer with our annual Neighborhood Arts programs, plus all the book clubs and crafting clubs you can imagine.

The Special Superpower

Growing up, my favorite question was “do you want to go to the library?” I would race to my room to get dressed as quickly as I could, channeling my inner Flash and his lightning speed. As a young child, I found myself in awe of the world hidden in the pages of an unforgettable story. Some days I would check my mailbox for my Hogwarts letter. Obviously, it got lost somewhere, because my talents would have overshadowed Harry Potter. Other days I would escape to meet Eragon or even wonder what it would be like to go home to Amelia Bedelia. Each story gave me the power to travel through realms and dimensions, allowing me to find my way into Wonderland.

Fast forward a few years, and a special opportunity presented itself, giving me the ability to share my passion for reading and stories through the volunteer program at my local library. I loved watching each kid’s face light up with every new prize they received as we celebrated the joy of reading together! At the time, I had no idea that these summers would play such an important role in fostering my love for reading as an adult.

Needless to say, I discovered the magic of storytelling at a young age and continue to be mesmerized with each new world I uncover. Most people don’t realize how important reading is for a child. This simple habit plays a significant role in child development, allowing them to learn empathy, better their critical thinking skills, and even boost their writing and

communication skills. However, reading is just as beneficial for adults, allowing them to reduce stress, improve cognitive function, and grow their emotional intelligence. Luckily, our Summer Reading program is for kids, adults and teens with unique prizes for everyone!

As adults, we often find ourselves reminiscing about the imagination we had as children, but we never stop to realize that the only person preventing us from continuing to find fun in every moment is ourselves. I’m not sure who conspired to make us believe that the magic, the excitement and the whimsy only existed for us as children when the reality is far from that. The enchantment never ends. It only disappears when we stop looking for it, and reading is the key to unlocking a whole new world of joy and excitement.

So, here’s my challenge for you. Let’s join forces to spark the joy of getting lost in a book by making it our goal to “Unearth a Story” together this summer! In a world filled with screens, lose yourself in the pages of a book with your loved ones. Find something that makes you feel seen in a world that tries to make us disappear. Discover the power of being kind and pouring light into the world. Travel the world to help understand the people around you better. Learn from history to make better decisions for future generations. Reading isn’t just a fun pastime. It’s a superpower that brings us all together, and who knows, you may discover a passion for reading as you read along with your little one. Together we can build an unforgettable Neverland!

Who’s ready to volunteer as tribute for our Summer Reading Program? May the odds be ever in your favor!

Online Resources Worth Digging Into

Metro Library has more than your favorite books and programs – we've got digital resources and databases too! Wherever your curiosity may take you, these are some digital resources worth checking out:

• Small Engine Repair: From troubleshooting lawn mower issues to keeping your boat running, this resource has the tools to keep you out of the repair shop this summer!

• Job & Career Accelerator: Build a resume. Master an interview. Discover a scholarship. Match with a career field. All of this and more is possible with this resource. You’ll be ready for the workforce or college in no time!

• Historical Newspapers: Looking to get a (historical) scoop? With editions of the “New York Times” dating back to 1851 and no longer printed publications like the “Chicago Defender,” you’re sure to uncover something new!

• Mergent Atlas and Morningstar: Whether you’re starting a small business, researching a company or trying to understand investments, these tools make the numbers make sense. Entrepreneurs, students, businesspeople –your library has resources for you!

• Testaments to the Holocaust: The Henia Ring Schiff Holocaust Resource Collection at the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library only contains part of the story. Find survivor testimonies and rare photos to continue learning about one of history’s most documented tragedies.

• Life in America Series: These collections offer a window into the history of Hispanic, Black, Asian and Indigenous Americans – reflecting both triumph and hardship. But as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, this resource reminds us of the stories that make the United States the melting pot it is today.

• HistoryGeo: History comes alive with interactive antique maps of the United States! You’ll have fun tracing back to learn how communities formed, grew, and shifted across the country.

June 1 - July 26, 2026

8 weeks of arts per formances in your neighborhood!

How I Find the Time

Capricious and easily startled. In chinks and corners, mostly. Sometimes hard at work, sometimes twiddling its thumbs.

When I find it, I ask no questions. I’ve lined my pockets with moments not near enough to make something with,

least of all art. But see, how the spare minutes want to be found. Listen for a pregnant sound, like a tuning note.

Like a window cracked on the first warm draughts of spring. While you have it, however long it holds, you write like mad.

- Metro Library Poet Laureate Hallie Waugh

Metro Library is accepting submissions for the next Poet Laureate, with the application open until July 17. Scan the QR code or visit metrolibrary. org/poetlaureate for more application information.

Romance Readers Rejoice!

Authors Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone Visit Metro Library

Bestselling romance authors Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone are visiting the Patience S. Latting Northwest Library on July 30 at 6 p.m. for a special author talk and book event. They will speak about their steamy new novel, “Fundamentals of Being a Good Girl” and Murphy's latest solo book, “Vera Stein is Fine.”

These best friends and writing partners have authored six romantic comedies together, including the bestselling Christmas Notch series. “Fundamentals of Being a Good Girl” is a tropefilled, raunchy comedy featuring a single dad professor in a college town, an eccentric group of friends, and a slow burn romance. Stuck-in-his-ways Professor Bram is a true grump, and new law school grad turned lecturer Maddie brings the sunshine into his life. When Maddie arrives in town to work at his college, they are drawn to each other immediately but try to stay professional, especially when Bram hires Maddie for a short-term nanny job. “Fundamentals of Being a Good Girl” is the first book in the authors’ new Academic Affairs series.

This event will be moderated by Second Story Books, who will also be selling the authors’ books on site. Julie and Sierra will be sure to provide a high-energy, laughter-filled evening for romance readers. They’ll share their road to publishing, the highs and lows of writing romance, and what it’s really like to co-write as a duo. And they’ll be teasing what’s next, giving readers a glimpse into future stories and projects they have in store.

The authors will be signing limited amounts of books after their talk. Doors open 30 minutes before the event. You can register for this program starting July 6. Seats are limited, and this event is for ages 18 and up.

Whether you’re a longtime romance reader or discovering these authors for the first time, don’t miss out! Visit metrolibrary.org for more info or visit the QR code for event details!

“We're so excited to visit our bookish neighbors in Oklahoma City! We're hoping our event can be a celebration of romance novels and also of being a romance reader too. There's something magical about unashamedly claiming what you love to read and about claiming a genre that's built on hope and justice. Whether readers are there because they love swoons, spice or giggles, we aim to send every reader away with a smile on their face and several additions to their TBR.”

- Julie Murphy and Sierra Simone

T Pride Then and Now

he first recorded Queer Pride event in Oklahoma City was an informal gathering of people taking part in the local tradition of painting what was known as the “Graffiti Bridge.” Many people painted the bridge for graduations and various celebrations, so why not make some community art there to celebrate Pride? Others were not happy about it.

Several folks claimed that the police would arrest anyone who was involved, leading to some worrying that this would be the end of the Graffiti Bridge. (Spoiler alert, it was not; the Graffiti Bridge tradition lasted a while longer).

The first OKC Pride Parade came a few years later. As soon as the plans became known, with the required permits submitted and so on, a handful of religious communities and the Ku Klux Klan loudly complained about the idea. Anti-gay protesters were annoyed to find that they had to stay in designated areas along the parade route. The Klan were dismayed to find that, while they had boasted about assaulting those who were taking part in the parade, there were more attendees than they anticipated. They ended up leaving without further incidents.

In 1989, a tradition of displaying banners around the city began with designs related to the Olympics. According to contemporary sources, there were no issues around the banners. Someone would submit an application, and it would almost always get approved...

until 2001, when an intense legal battle ensued over banners referencing Gay and Lesbian Pride. The city had initially approved the banners but then took them down and instituted new policies about what kinds of content would be allowed. The uproar was only calmed by the eventual involvement of the American Civil Liberties Union and a federal judge’s ruling that the newly implemented policies were unconstitutional. Even then, the grumbling went on for a couple years longer. Those against the Pride banners compared them to similar signs being made to promote bestiality, the Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Nazis, or illegal activity.

Thanks to Library Aide James Nimmo and his late partner, Donald Chabot, we now have one of those banners in our collection: Number 36, according to the small red print on the top right corner (although it’s unknown exactly how many were made or used in 2001). Now it serves as a tangible reminder of the struggle for representation and visibility.

There are, of course, many more stories that could be told about queer identity and pride in Oklahoma. Many of the problems of yesteryear continue today –assumptions and stereotypes, unaccepting or downright hostile reactions, hate crimes, biased child custody battles and more. But that's part of why at least once a year we gather and celebrate that, in spite of everything, we’re still here...loving each other, creating community and making history every day.

Remember, there is no measure of “you must be this queer” to attend, but allies are guests of the community. If something is not to your taste or causes you to clutch your metaphorical pearls, instead of making a fuss, take a breath, and remember the wise words of Dr. Frankenfurter: it’s not made for you. We also invite you to join Metro Library for the inaugural Rainbow Faire at Patience S. Latting Northwest Library June 13 from 1-3 p.m. This will be a welcoming event for all! Enjoy an afternoon filled with vibrant community spirit as you discover local organizations and resources. You can also participate in fun activities, enter to win prizes, snap memorable photos and show off your creativity in our all-ages Craft Costume Contests. It’s a day to celebrate community, creativity and inclusion. Everyone is welcome!

This is just one of many events including craft nights, creative writing exercises and more across our system. For a full list of events, visit metrolibrary.org/pride.

By 2067, Mars has been sporadically settled. Teenage rich boy Hunter is the heir to his family's colonization empire, traveling to Mars from Earth to make a play for his rightful place in the business. He meets stowaway Cleo on a planetary base immediately after an emergency evacuation, which they both miss. When a secret plot is uncovered and mercenaries threaten to destroy the (almost) empty base, Hunter and Cleo form an uneasy alliance to stop the impending explosion and stay alive.

The action starts in the first few pages, when Hunter's arrival on the planet turns into a chaotic scene of workers and settlers in full evacuation mode. Details about Hunter and Cleo's pasts are revealed slowly, heightening the tension and adding to the drama as they start to fall for each other.

Space pirates, a ticking bomb, escape attempts, and ambushes add to the nonstop momentum of this story, which takes place in just eight hours. The “Home Alone”-style traps Hunter and Cleo set for the bad guys keep this book fun and silly. Readers looking for gripping sci-fi escapism who don't mind a large dose of romance will love the banter and space science. Check this one out if you're looking for something quick and engaging to log for Summer Reading.

When Courtney moved into the Poets Square neighborhood, she had no idea the property also housed over 30 feral cats. While she had no intentions to spend her time or money on them, the cats gave her little choice, with their pleading eyes and starving bodies.

This book is about cats with silly names, but it’s also a book about grief, hope and finding community in a systematically broken world.

Not only is the author a cat whisperer (or“whis-PURRer"), but she also has the gift of making the unlovable loved beyond measure.

While the physical book is gold, the author herself narrates the audiobook, adding an even more emotional and tender touch, making “Poets Square: A Memoir in Thirty Cats” one of my all-time favorite reads.

"Dinosaurs at the Dinner Party"

Available formats: Book, eBook, Kindle, eAudiobook

If dinosaurs and history are your cup of tea, then “Dinosaurs at the Dinner Party” is a must read.

Author Edward Dolnick digs deep into the when and how of our introduction to dinosaurs. It’s very informative but it was, at times, hard for me to follow.

However, I thoroughly enjoyed how much of the book was dedicated to Mary Anning’s contributions to paleontology.

As a woman in the 1800s, she’s often written out of the story, so I very much appreciate that Dolnick featured her so prominently. I didn’t realize until writing this review that I saw some of her discoveries when I visited the London National History Museum a couple years ago!

"When You Find the Right Rock"

Available formats: Book, eBook

Are you raising a rock collector? Do pebbles accumulate in your house, along with skipping stones, geodes and minerals of all kinds? “When You Find the Right Rock” tells us that, for amateur geologists everywhere, gathering rocks is more than just a hobby. Author Mary Lyn Ray celebrates all the reasons little ones pick up stones, from the thrill of discovery to the joy of playtime and even a sense of belonging.

With inviting splashes of color, artist Felicia Sala’s mixed media artwork illustrates the excitement of a new excavation. Rocks of all kinds roll across the pages of this delightful children’s story.

Where will you unearth geological joys this summer? Your neighborhood park? Your friend’s farm? Maybe your local library, with lots of special programs waiting for you in June and July! After reading this book, you and your children will know exactly what to do “When You Find the Right Rock” this summer.
