Summer is here, making it the perfect time to explore your local library! This June and July, we're hosting over 1,300 free events throughout our 19 locations as part of the annual Summer Reading program. This year, our theme is “Color Our World.”
Summer Reading is one of our favorite traditions—not just because it’s a blast, but because it truly matters. It helps combat the summer slide, where students might lose some skills while school is on break. But it's not just for the kids. Everyone can join in, and we've got something lined up for all ages.
To keep your summer packed with color, creativity and community, our libraries will be full of amazing programs. You and your family can experience cookie decorating, balloon art, gardening, live snake encounters, gelli art, swing dancing, wildlife walks, and so much more. We’re also proud to host dozens of Neighborhood Arts performances, featuring everything from improv and dance groups to violinists, bands, and cultural showcases.
Books and art have always gone hand in hand. A great story can spark the imagination just as powerfully as a painting, song or dance. That’s why this year’s theme, “Color Our World,” celebrates the creativity that flows from the pages of a book into every aspect of our lives. Whether you’re reading a novel that transports you to a different place and time or joining a hands-on art activity at one of our locations, we invite you to experience the full spectrum of inspiration.
When you sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge, you can log the minutes you spend reading or listening to audiobooks, and earn rewards along the way. Once you reach your goal, you’ll receive a prize, either a brand-new book or a colorful tote bag— and you’ll be entered into our grand prize drawing for even more giveaways.
At the Metropolitan Library System, we love making sure our libraries mirror the diverse communities we serve. That's why we're rolling out a host of Pride Month programs this June. It's all about celebrating the voices, stories and contributions of our LGBTQ+ community. We've got a lineup of inclusive events, like the Pink Pony Club Pride Celebration, creative writing workshops, a mini float parade and zine-making sessions for LGBTQ+ teens and allies. These happenings are all about selfexpression, connection and joy—reinforcing our commitment to making sure everyone feels welcome, seen and valued at the library.
Join us this summer to Color Our World with imagination, discovery and joy. I hope to see you at the library!

The Metropolitan Library System’s Summer Reading program is back this June and July and encourages Oklahomans of all ages to read for fun, exploration and prizes. This long-standing tradition aims to foster a love of reading and build a community of readers through books, activities and events designed for every age group.
For young children, the program supports early literacy by emphasizing the importance of talking, singing, playing and activities that prepare kids to read. Even reading aloud to babies counts. For school-aged children, Summer Reading helps prevent the “summer slide,” a loss of academic skills that can occur when students aren’t actively engaged in learning over the break. The program keeps reading enjoyable and helps kids maintain and build confidence in their reading abilities.
Adults and teens are encouraged to participate as well, whether by reading books, audiobooks, comics or blogs, or by volunteering at the library. Everyone is welcome, and everyone can earn prizes. Make this summer one of discovery, imagination, and community. Help us break our record of 13,000,000 points!
• All reading counts: Books, audiobooks, comics, blogs and more. Reading aloud to children counts for both the caregiver and the child.
• 600-Point Goal: Earn one point per minute read and up to 100 bonus points for literacy activities.
• Prizes: Choose from youth books, adult books or a Metro Library tote bag after reaching 600 points. Prize pickup runs June 1–July 31; drawing winners will be announced in August.
• Track Your Progress: Use the Beanstack app to log minutes, scan books and manage family accounts. Paper logs and verbal check-ins are also accepted.
• Eligibility: A valid Metro Library card linked to your Beanstack account is required to qualify for prize drawings.
In addition to reading, the library offers a wide range of free summer events. Special guests will present hands-on programs on everything from needlefelting to balloon art to snake handling. Full event listings are available at metrolibrary.org/summerfun.

Southern Oaks Library is now celebrating a major milestone: 50 years of service to the community!
The library opened its doors at its current location in 1975 with a collection of 70,000 volumes, replacing a leased storefront facility in the Southern Hills Shopping Center. That original branch, which opened in 1966, was the first library established after the formation of the Oklahoma County Libraries System (now known as the Metropolitan Library System).
Funding for the Southern Oaks Library came from Oklahoma City's June 1970 Capitol Bond Fund, which also helped finance the Ralph Ellison Library. The library sits on a two-and-a-half-acre site donated in 1971 by John Griffin, offering a scenic backdrop of trees and a small creek.
At the time of its opening, the library proudly offered 8mm films and cassette tapes for loan, and the grand opening in June 1975 featured bluegrass music, puppet shows and more.
If you're curious about the history of our library branches, our Special Collections and Research Department is a great place to explore.
On Sept. 25, 2012, Southern Oaks Library reopened after a renovation that expanded its size from 16,000 to 20,000 square feet and included “Cover to Cover,” a series of outdoor sculptures created by local artist Joe Slack.
Today, Southern Oaks Library continues to serve the diverse educational, informational and cultural needs of South Oklahoma City and Oklahoma County, offering storytimes for children and a variety of programs for adults including Tai Chi.
Join us in celebrating the Southern Oaks Library’s 50th anniversary!

When it comes to queer history, there will inevitably be some disagreement (many historians' favorite pastimes are arguing and research, in that order). But there should never be an outright erasure of queer people throughout history. While some claim that 2SLGBTQ+ identities are a recent invention or look back nostalgically on a time when "those people" supposedly didn’t exist, real history says otherwise. Although many of the terms we use today have evolved or emerged in recent decades, queer people have existed for as long as people have.
Whether you’re looking in Ancient Egypt, Colonial America, or a time and place more recently in our memories, there were plenty of folks who weren’t cis (identifying as the gender they were assigned at birth) and/or straight. And not all cultures and time periods thought that was a bad thing – as with any trait, like being left-handed, different people viewed and valued it differently. For modern Americans, thanks to Puritans, Victorians and others, we've been told that anything outside of a particular identity or attraction should be ignored, hidden, or whittled away. That leads to ignorance, either intentional or accidental, which makes it harder for anyone to learn more nuance or depth. Like pretty much anything involving people, accurate history is messy and complicated and complex.
In times when it was unsafe to be gay, lesbian, any other queer identity, or generally anyone who wasn't a straight, white, affluent, and cis man, there have always been people building community together in spite of and through whatever circumstances they’ve been given. With bookstores, newsletters, bars, rodeos, pageants, travel guides, and many other ways, they did something special to support each other, growing individually and together. People of any identity can learn a lot from our queer elders. Like wildflowers, they grew roots and bloomed in the most unexpected and adverse situations. This summer, may we all learn from them and grow together, hold space for each other, and care for each other.

"Some Strange Music Draws Me In"
Griffin Hansbury
Available formats: Formats: Book, eBook, Kindle
When Max Pulaski’s mother dies and he’s placed on probationary leave from his teaching job, he heads to Swaffham, Massachusetts, to help his sister clean out their childhood house. While home, Max recalls the summer of 1984, when he was not a man, but a girl, Mel, and only just beginning to grapple with his identity.
During that summer, Mel was feeling disconnected from her peers. She felt wrong and didn’t understand why. She found reprieve when she met an older, openly transgender woman, Sylvia, who Mel was instantly enamored with. The rest of town didn’t feel the same, however. It caused Mel to clash with her mother, and put a rift in her already turbulent relationship with her best friend, all culminating in an explosive fallout in Mel and Sylvia’s lives.
Griffin Hansbury doesn’t pull any punches in his depiction of what it’s like being LGBTQ+ in a small town. It’s realistic, emotional and bittersweet; a heartfelt letter to the new and old members of his community.

I was excited to read a book about one of my favorite TV shows of all time. (“Sneak Previews” on PBS and later, “At the Movies” and Siskel and Ebert in syndication.) No, it’s not a comedy or drama, but a show featuring two respected newspaper film critics reviewing movies. As the book says, “once upon a time, if you wanted to know if a movie was worth seeing, you didn’t check out Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB. You asked whether Siskel & Ebert had given it ‘two thumbs up.’” The Illinois writers often had a combative relationship, but the viewer could tell that they had a love for movies and later a sibling rivalry type of friendship. The author talks about each critic’s life and the success of the show, which he attributes to the clash between the two stars' personalities and their competitiveness.
This book talks about their careers, their start on a PBS show, and how they made millions on their syndicated show. They often appeared on talk shows and were very entertaining. When watching the show, even if you didn’t agree with their review, and I sometimes didn’t, you knew which movies were interesting and that you wanted to see. Would it be too corny to say, “You should read this book. Thumbs up?”

"All-Night Pharmacy"
Ruth Madievsky
Available formats: Book, Playaway, eBook, eAudioBook
Somewhere between gritty urban and magical realism, “All-Night Pharmacy” guides the reader with a manicured hand into a neon world of pain and longing. The unnamed narrator is pushed and pulled through life by her unhinged older sister, following along with every bender and caper. She has no idea who she is or what she wants. When her sister vanishes without a trace, she has to figure out who to be, how to live, and decide if she truly wants her sister back in her life.
In “All-Night Pharmacy” we jump between bizarre settings like flash frames in a digital album: the ER waiting room where the narrator works, the sequin-addled dance floor of Debbie’s favorite nightclub, Salvation, and a mystical homecoming trip to Moldova. We meet mythical figures like the dramatic, soul-stealing sister Debbie and the soothing, savior-like girlfriend Sasha.
Like a drive through a foreign city in the wee hours of the morning, “All-Night Pharmacy” promises bright lights, odd sights, and new beginnings. We sit in the passenger seat, watching our young narrator puzzle out her identity as a queer woman, a Jewish woman, a survivor, and a sister.

I love YA mysteries, and I particularly love Maureen Johnson’s YA mysteries. While “Death at Morning House” is similar in tone to the excellent “Truly Devious” series, this is a completely separate story. Which means you can read it right now with no homework.
Marlowe escapes to an island to work for the summer after a truly mortifying date gone wrong. She’s quickly enmeshed in the mystery that surrounds Morning House and the group of teens tasked with running it as a tourist attraction.
This has everything I like. Funny dialogue, historical murders, big spooky houses, SLEUTHING! But it also tackles heavy themes like eugenics, while still being entertaining. I loved it.
