When Summer Reading wraps up, the excitement in our libraries keeps rolling. Tens of thousands of you made this year’s program a hit. From snakes and hula hoops to opera and skeletons, guests discovered a world of wonders and a treasure trove of books. The fun and learning will continue this fall with a wide range of activities.
Exciting news: We landed a federal grant to celebrate the 250th birthday of the Declaration of Independence! We’re diving into “True Grit” by Charles Portis, exploring western tales and Oklahoma History. Catch our NEA Big Read kickoff on Sept. 26 at the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library, powered by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Arts Midwest.
It’s time to send the kids back to school, but you don’t have to do it alone. Our libraries have after-school programs, live online tutoring and digital learning tools. Feel free to ask staff how to get started.
And lifelong learning is not just a kid thing—everyone can dive in. Come to LitFest on Aug. 22, where local authors and publishing pros will share their wisdom. We can also help you explore gardening, Dungeons & Dragons, crafting, tech and more throughout the month.
Mark your calendars because the Friends of the Metro Library Summer Book Sale is happening August 14-15. Every purchase helps kids learn to read through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Plus, you get to beef up your home library.
Whether you’re hunting for a book, picking up a new skill, or meeting fellow hobbyists, every visit promises something fresh.

15 August Events
Browse hundreds of events like back-toschool parties, Route 66 celebrations and more.

We've got your guide to this annual program on August 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library! Learn more at metrolibrary.org/litfest! We spoke with author and librarian Kim Ventrella all about what to expect from this year’s event!
Q: Can you tell me what folks should expect with LitFest?
A: LitFest is our annual one-day writers conference, and it's totally free! We have more than 40 local authors and publishing professionals sharing their knowledge in sessions running every hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees will want to get out their highlighters and scan the schedule ahead of time, because there will be seven sessions to choose from every hour. While folks won't be able to attend every amazing session, there will definitely be something for everyone at LitFest.
Q: How can writers of all types benefit from this event? And what about non-writers looking to attend?
A: We have sessions focused on nearly every genre, from romantasy to mystery, historical, and even non-fiction. Folks can learn about writing for children and middle grade readers or dive into the publishing and marketing side of writing. Illustrators can learn about comic book creation, keeping a sketchbook, and working on children's picture books. Jeff Provine will thrill audiences with his tales of haunted Oklahoma, and William Bernhardt will delve into the fascinating backstory behind Superman. But those are just a few of our sessions. LitFest has something for both brand new and experienced writers. Attendees can also enter our hourly raffle drawings, visit our vendors, and purchase signed books from our on-site vendor, Second Story Books.

Q: As an author, what advice do you have for folks looking to get their work published?
A: Every publishing avenue comes with different challenges and benefits, so it's important to understand how each avenue works and how each fits in with your goals. If you're determined to sell your work to a major traditional publisher, for example, your path to publication will be very different from someone who wants to self-publish or go through a small press. So first do your research to see what options are out there and to avoid potential scams. Then, once you've decided which avenue you want to pursue, do even more research, connect with other writers pursuing similar goals, and put in the work. Attending an event like LitFest can help you get started and help you connect with fellow writers.

Q: What else would you like to share about LitFest? And where can folks learn more?
A: LitFest is a come-and-go event. Folks can stay the whole day or just stop by for the sessions that interest them most. The full schedule along with additional information is available at metrolibrary.org/litfest. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required. Sessions will take place on the 4th floor of the Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library; check-in and the vendor fair will be located in the atrium on the first floor. There will be a short lunch break from 12:45-1:15 p.m. Street parking is free downtown on the weekends. There are also several paid parking garages nearby that provide easy access to the library.

There will be a special LitFest Kids event at the Bethany Library the week before LitFest. Join Metro Poet Laureate Hallie Waugh on Saturday, August 15 from 11 a.m. to Noon for a “Family Poetry Workshop!” Plus, “LitFest: Writer's Block Take-Home Kits” will be available at multiple branches in early August while supplies last!

Once LitFest is wrapped, you can still find answers to your writing questions by visiting checking out Libby, hoopla or visiting metrolibrary.org.
You can find the latest copy of Writer's Digest either in-person at your library location, or by logging into Libby on your phone or device.

Find videos on all aspects of the writing process including outlining, developing writing routines, editing, selling to a publisher and more! You'll even find videos on writing screenplays and song lyrics.
Have a student at home who's interested in improving their writing skills? Check out LearningExpress Library for videos, tutorials, eBooks and more to set your student up for success. For older students, there are even lessons on writing their College Admissions Essay, and how to practice for the ACT®Writing Test.

"Dead But Dreaming of Electric Sheep"
Paul Tremblay
Available formats: Book, eBook, eAudiobook
The title of Paul Tremblay’s latest is a nod to Philip K. Dick, and PKD would be proud. In this techno-horror novel, Julia, fresh out of college and worn to a nub working dead-end, low paying jobs defies her better judgment and takes a high paying job remotely controlling a corpse cross-country. Well, only mostly a corpse. A mostly dead body with AI in it. And then things get really weird. Julia finds herself pulled down a rabbit hole of paranoia and unreality, on the run and starting to wonder just how dead her traveling companion really is.
Tremblay infuses this dark premise with enormous wit and humanity, while asking troubling questions about consciousness and what it means to be human...and what it means to surrender our humanity. I highly recommended. Oh, and don’t skip the note on the typesetting at the end. Trust me on this.

Allen Levi
Available formats: Book, Large Print, eBook, Kindle, eAudiobook
Picture this…an unknown traveler moves from New York City to a small southern town south of Atlanta named Golden. Despite being new to town, and acting a bit mysterious, Theo’s actions have a profound, lasting influence on the people of Golden. In his first days in town, he lands in a local coffeehouse, whose walls are filled with portraits of 92 local residents, and they are all for sale. The story follows Theo as he purchases each portrait, one at a time, and gifts them to the subject of the drawing. As Theo gifts each drawing, the reader is privy to the sincere generosity and loving-kindness that Theo fosters through really “seeing” those that live in Golden. This story has surprises along the way; big ones and small ones.
This debut novel will captivate you starting on the first page, and by the end of the book you are intertwined with the characters as if you had lived in Golden your entire life. This is a must read.

"See
One, Do One, Teach One: the Art of Becoming a Doctor"
Grace Farris
Available formats: Graphic Novel
Far away from the breakneck speed of today’s hit show “The Pitt,” the debut graphic novel “See One, Do One, Teach One” is a reflective, authentic, cozy (yes, cozy) memoir that plots one doctor’s path through medical training. From a stint in the ER to rounds in the OB and a season in psychiatry, we shadow Dr. Grace Farris along the halls of hospitals and laboratories to find her true calling. Her book-side manner is excellent, kind and affirming while staying realistic and honest. She doesn’t shy away from the dark lessons she learned in residency; the book is filled with examples of medical racism and patient dismissal, which other doctors often hide in the same quaint phrasing as the book’s title.
Dr. Farris cares for her readers just as she would her patients—her words are humble, her art gentle in pastel shades and a sketched-out style. This graphic memoir is a must-read for anyone who is a doctor, loves a doctor, or wants to become one themselves.

Emily Henry
Available formats: Book, eBook, Kindle, eAudiobook
January Andrews has always loved the idea of love. She watched her father’s unwavering support for her mother through her cancer treatment, had the perfect boyfriend, and wrote romance novels for a living. She had the perfect life, until one day it all unraveled with her father’s death. She couldn’t decide what was worse: discovering her parents’ marriage wasn’t as perfect as she thought, her boyfriend breaking up with her, or having Augustus Everett as her new annoying neighbor. To top it off, Augustus was a literary fiction writer who rolled his eyes at even the slightest mention of romance.
Then one day they make a bet to swap genres for their next book. As they begin to spend time together, January discovers there may be more to Augustus than she thought. He might even be a decent human being. Their relationship begins to blossom as they share their varying perspectives on love, life, and relationships. Suddenly, amid her life’s growing chaos, she finds herself falling for Augustus. Will this be her biggest mistake or the beginning of a happily ever after? Henry manages to present her reader with two drastically contrasting outlooks on love and life without making either one out to be the villain. This fresh, new take on how opposites attract will make you fall in love with love again.

Metro Library is excited to continue our partnership with the Oklahoma State Fair! Throughout the summer, our locations hosted a variety of Oklahoma State Fair presentations and hands-on activities. This collaboration offers engaging experiences for children, teen, and adults.
In June and July, programs available through the Oklahoma State Fair partnership included “How to Enter the Fair,” which offered adult craft program participants a Q&A about entering, judging, displaying, and reclaiming their work; “Ribbon Recycle Bookmarks,” where kids and teens created bookmarks using old Oklahoma State Fair ribbons; “Dinosaur Puppets,” where kids made puppets using brown paper sacks and coloring sheets; and “Route 66 Dragster,” where kids and teens celebrated 100 years of Route 66 by creating their own classic cars.
We have three Metro Library staff participating as judges in three different crafting categories: handknitting/crochet, painted furniture, and china painting. And we will also have a take-home kit inspired by the State Fair’s travelling circus. Participants will be able to build their own circus tent using craft supplies and put on their own puppet show with all of the fun and exciting circus animals and characters provided in the kit.

Metro Library is excited to bring back our Third Annual Oklahoma State Fair Ticket Raffle, thanks to our friends at the Oklahoma State Fair!
Every library location will have a take-home kit with everything you need to enter. Just ask a staff member for details and how to sign up.
Here's how it works:
• Enter at any Metro Library location from Aug. 12 through Sept. 9.
• One winner at each library will receive four Oklahoma State Fair tickets.
• You may enter once per library, so feel free to enter at multiple locations. However, each person is only eligible to win one set of tickets.
• To enter, you'll need to provide your preferred library location, email address, phone number, and have a library card in good standing.
Winners will be drawn on Sept. 10 and notified shortly afterward. Ticket pickup begins Sept. 12. Good luck—we hope to see you at the fair!

As students prepare to return to the classroom, Metro Library is offering resources, programs, and learning opportunities designed to support academic success throughout the school year. From after-school activities to homework assistance and digital learning tools, the library continues to serve as a yearround resource for students and families.
The school year begins with opportunities to help students feel prepared before the first day of class. On Aug. 2 at 1 p.m., Warr Acres Library will host a free back-to-school haircuts and school supplies event in partnership with Legitimate Look Barber/Salon.
"I can't wait to welcome families to the Warr Acres Library for this special event," said Chelsee Bumann, Children's Librarian at Warr Acres Library. "Every child deserves to start the school year feeling their best."
Once classes begin, library programming continues with after-school activities that encourage creativity and exploration. Students can create vision boards and personalize pencil pouches at Midwest City Library and join libraries across the system for art clubs, volunteer opportunities, and leadership groups for teens. Plus, students can build reading confidence during Children Reading to Dogs sessions, where young readers practice aloud with trained therapy dogs in a relaxed setting.
Several branches also offer recurring after-school programming. Ralph Ellison Library hosts its afterschool snack program for children and teens at 4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays throughout the fall in partnership with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.
"We love the opportunity to help provide for the kids in our community with the assistance of the Regional Food Bank," said Ashley Milinkovich, Library Manager at Ralph Ellison Library.
Beyond in-person events, Metro Library provides access

If the season sparked your love of reading or helped you discover a new favorite library resource, we have great news: exciting programs, book clubs, and reading materials are available all year long. Browse this issue of “Info Magazine,” find events that inspire you, and we’ll see you at the library.
Some of the top titles for Summer Reading this year include....
• Dungeon Crawler Carl
• The Harry Potter series
• Project Hail Mary
• Remarkably Bright Creatures
• Yesteryear
• Theo of Golden
• The Rabbit Listened

Top: The Village Library hosted a dino-sized pizza party with author Tammi Sauer, author of “Pizzasaurus." Some real life Pizzasauruses joined the party (including Metro Library CEO Jason Kuhl pictured on the right), and Pizza Hut generously provided pizza and “Book it” t-shirts and buttons for guests. Kim Boldt, our Director of Outreach and Engagement Services, said “the Pizzasaurus pizza party was the highlight of my Summer Reading!”
Left: Inpsyral Circus joined us for performances across locations with our Neighborhood Arts Program, along with dozens of other local performers, made possible by our partnership with the Arts Council Oklahoma City, National Endowment of the Arts, and the Oklahoma Arts Council. About some of these awesome performances, Mary West said, "I loved seeing some of our unique programs inspire our local youth for future career options, like Inspyral Circus, Harpist Jessica Tate, and the Oklahoma Geological Survey!"
Right: Some of our awesome teen volunteers at Bethany Library! Without the hard work of hundreds of our teen volunteers, Summer Reading would not be the same. Choctaw Library teen volunteer supervisor Mary said, "it was amazing watching our volunteers find their niche in the library.” One of our other awesome volunteer supervisors, Amanda at Del City Library, said, "the best interaction was when one of the teen volunteers said to me that he was glad that he was volunteering since now he knows how much all of the librarians actually do. He was genuinely surprised, and it made me smile."
