Plague or world war no threat to 10bn population

A plAnet-wide conflict that claimed as many lives as the first two world wars combined would hardly make any difference to the world’s exploding population, a study claims. population growth is so out of control that even stringent restrictions on childbirth, disastrous pandemics or a third world war would not make it manageable, researchers believe. Rather than reducing the number of people on the planet, cutting the consumption of natural resources and enhanced recycling would have a better chance of achieving effective sustainability gains in the next 85 years, they said. professor Barry Brook, who co-led the study at the University of Adelaide, Australia, said: ‘we were surprised that a fiveyear ww3 scenario, mimicking the same proportion of people killed in the first and second world wars combined, barely registered a blip on the human population trajectory this century.’ the Second world war claimed between 50million and 85million military and civilian lives, according to

by joHn Von radowiTz

various estimates, making it the most lethal conflict by absolute numbers of dead in human history. More than 37million people are thought to have died in the First world war. the scientists used a computer model based on demographic data from the world Health Organisation and United States Census Bureau to investigate different population reduction scenarios. they found that under current conditions of fertility, mortality and mother’s average age at first childbirth, the population was likely to grow to 10.4billion by 2100. Climate change, war, reduced fertility, and increased maternal age altered this only slightly. A devastating global pandemic that killed 2billion people was only projected to reduce population size to 8.4billion, while 6billion deaths brought it down to 5.1billion. the findings are published in the journal proceedings Of the national Academy Of Sciences.

Church gongs could ring for Hozier with new MTV award

IRISH singer-songwriter Hozier is in the running for a gong at next month’s MTV Europe Music Awards. He has been shortlisted in the ‘best song with a message’ category. The new ‘socially focused’ award has been created to ‘recognise songs that have an empowering impact on young people, tackling important issues they care about and inspiring them to have a social conscience’, the music channel said. The Wicklow star’s Take Me To Church has a strong anti-homophobia message, and its video, which went viral online, is a clear reference to violent attacks on gays in Russia. His album has been a runaway success, going to No.1 in Ireland and No.2 in the US. Hozier lines up against Beyonce’s Pretty Hurts, Arcade Fire’s We Exist, We Are Here by Alicia Keys, and Meghan Trainor’s All

It has also been announced that Enrique Iglesias is to perform at the ceremony at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on November 9. Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande have already been named as other performers. US rapper Nicki Minaj is to host the starstudded ceremony, with Katy Perry heading the nominations this year as she competes for seven prizes. Grande is up for six while Pharrell Williams is up for five, including best song and best video for his huge global hit Happy. The awards are being held in Glasgow for the first time, though the city hosted MTV Crashes Glasgow in 2010.

Greens want Irish Water referendum

THE GrEEn ParTy is calling for a referendum on the public ownership of water. It is campaigning for a clause to be inserted in the Constitution preventing the utility from ever being privatised. Green Party leader Eamon ryan said that the Government had ‘lost the confidence of the people in the way it had gone about the establishment of Irish Water’, with fears of its privatisation being constantly cited by concerned citizens. He added: ‘We can ensure that will never happen by inserting a new article into our Constitution which would guarantee the public ownership of our water supply into the future.’

station. She is being quizzed under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act. Gardaí also arrested a 31-year-old male in relation to the murder. He is currently being detained under Section 4 of The criminal Justice Act 1984 at Mountjoy garda station. The area around the shooting was sealed off for a full forensic examination by garda technical experts. The state pathologist was also asked to attend the scene.

The post mortem has been completed and the results have been passed to the investigation team which confirm that the deceased died from gunshot injuries. Investigating gardaí are trying to establish if there is any link with other incidents in the north inner city. A taxi driver was held up at gunpoint during a robbery at Terrace Place, close to Buckingham Street, at around 7.25pm on Sunday night.

It is believed a shotgun was used in the hold-up. The lone attacker made off on foot after demanding cash. In another incident, at 6.10am yesterday, a 55-year-old man was assaulted in a robbery at nearby Mabbot Lane, just off Talbot Street. The victim was taken to the Mater Hospital where he is being treated for minor injuries. A garda spokesman said that there was no link yet made between the robberies and the fatal shooting.

Family of Irish jeweller fear for Australian killer’s parole THE family of a Dublin man stabbed to death in a botched jewellery store robbery in Australia last year have said they fear his killer will still be ‘a huge risk to society’ when he has served his time. Speaking to RTÉ yesterday, Dermot O’Toole’s widow, Bridget – who was also stabbed in the July 2013 incident – said the family is ‘devastated’ with the 27year jail term handed down to Gavin Perry. The 27-year-old will serve 23 years without parole. He was high on the drug ‘ice’ when he attacked the 64-year-old

jeweller Dermot O’Toole in his Melbourne shop. He pleaded guilty to murder, armed robbery and intentionally causing injury. He was on parole at the time and had 200 previous convictions. Mrs O’Toole said: ‘I don’t believe he can be

Speaking to Australia’s The Age newspaper, he said: ‘When he’s released on parole we just hope that, whatever the parole system is in the future, they think more of the community and it doesn’t fail us.’

Legal experts say Pistorius could be found guilty of murder as he could reasonably predict someone might die when he shot at the toilet door. Pistorius’s family said: ‘The law must take its course.’

60 seconds Comedian tim minchin played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. A poem he wrote has now become a graphic novel How did this book come about? Tracy King and Dan C

Turner, who made this book, saw me on stage doing the poem it’s based on. They wanted to turn it into an animated short film so they spent two years making it and it got a couple of million hits on YouTube. Now they’ve turned it into a graphic novel, too. It’s a graphic novel of a jazz-era beat poem about rationalism – I don’t think there’s been anything like it.

It’s had a long life hasn’t it? It has and it’s not easy to consume – it’s polemic and it reflects a certain frustration. Of all the things I’ve written, some you want to come and go – and you wish the internet would let them go – but if anything is going to stick I’m glad this has. It’s about my humanist worldview.

is one of my least favourite clichés. Nothing happens for a reason but once everything has happened you will look back on it and realise the rest of your life was as a result of this fork in the road – and everything good that comes after it is connected. So even with a bereavement, every bit of love and joy that comes after will, as a necessary part of its existence, have that bereavement as part of it. That’s not an easy thing to explain, so people say ‘everything happens for a reason’, which is annoying.

You’re directing an animated film, Larrikins. How did that happen? I came in as songwriter

then I ended up working with the writer about how we could make it funnier. Then the studio asked if I wanted to direct it. The huge animation studios What stuff do just want a new I now live in Los you want to point of view and Angeles, where there’s someone who has be forgotten? creative The song about a hell of a lot of stupidity strong ideas. It’s not like the journalist around food, vaccines directing a live who gave me a action film, it’s bad review. It’s and natural more like a play. just a funny song remedies I’m addicted to and people ask me variety and the creative about it as if it just process. And I’m doing happened this year – it’s the Groundhog Day musical, from 2006. I did it for one show. which is in workshops right now.

Do you meet many people like Storm, the character in the book, who has irrational new-age beliefs? I’m quite well

known in Britain and Australia for my humanist, godless worldview and that means if people meet me they generally say they agree with me. I now live in LA, where there’s a hell of a lot of stupidity around food, vaccines and natural remedies. There’s a lot of crazy stuff about diets and misappropriation of science to sell products. There are some hardcore anti-GM people here too – I don’t agree.

Why’s that? No study shows genetically modified food does any damage to our health. I also don’t believe it’s bad for the environment because you use fewer pesticides, less land and less water. The problems with GM crops are how the patents are exploited and how to stop GM crops flying into non-GM crops but there have always been problems with crops mixing. Do you have a favourite cliché or argument people like Storm come out with?

‘Everything happens for a reason’

What are the highs and lows of coming from Perth? It’s

beautiful but when I was growing up it had a population of 1.2million – and the nearest big city is the same distance as Greece is from London. So it’s isolated and can be quite conservative but I think it’s wonderful. If you feel oppressed by it you might feel you have to escape. I never felt I had to escape – I just felt I had to go on more adventures.

Is there a musical that is regarded as the blueprint for how they should be written?

People think there’s a code for writing musicals but I think they’re wrong. Look at the difference between Rocky Horror, Jesus Christ Superstar, A Little Night Music and Les Mis – there’s no formula. When I wrote Matilda I hadn’t seen a musical for ten years. I didn’t study any structure or ask what you’re meant to do at the end of act one or where the big numbers should go. I love Rocky Horror and Superstar because they’re crazy camp, but for craft you can’t beat Stephen Sondheim. Andrew Williams

Gangland stress taking its toll? Help is at hand...

IT’S a stressful job being a Love/Hate gangster, or gangster’s moll – but now someone has put a price on it. (Spoiler alert!) A global price comparison website has taken each of the characters’ ailments, and offered suggestions on how to deal with them and on how much it will cost. We see Nidge stressed to the hilt with at least two hits out on him, and possibly another when Terence Big Balls figures out what happened to his nephew, Paulie. He could benefit from stress management therapy, which he could get for an average €66 per treatment. He’d want to be sure his appointment doesn’t cross with Patrick though. With his son lying in hospital and a hit also out on him, the bombmaker could also do with some stress treatment. Jailbird Fran is also a candidate for stress and anger management after trashing his cell on finding out about his wife’s affair with Nidge. Fake cancer claim woman conned men out of €190k

A MOTHER who gave up work to enter competitions full-time is counting the success of her ‘career’ change – by winning more than a quarter of a million pounds worth in prizes. Di Coke enters some 400 competitions a week and picks up around €19,000 a year in prizes, from TVs to holidays. Her first big win was a trip to Iceland in 1997, and the 40-yearold has never looked back. ‘I have got to the stage when I can fund my life through entering competitions,’ said Ms Coke, from Brighton, England. In total, she has raked in around €324,000 of prizes and has kitted out most of her house with her winnings.

and emptied their savings account. Her victims, Richard and Derek Fortune, were so ‘technophobic’ she was able to drain their bank accounts for three years without them finding out, a court heard. Her 42-year-old fiancé, Richard, had a heart attack after discovering the con and remains seriously ill in hospital awaiting a transplant. Mitchell, 31, yesterday admitted taking €52,000 from her fiancé and €137,000 from his brother between 2009 and 2012. Her scam was only uncovered when Derek, 50, contacted his bank after becoming suspicious. Mitchell, of Swindon, was jailed for four-and-a-half years.

Dewani’s kinky sex sessions at home of gay S&M escort AN S&M prostitute known as the German Master has told a court that Shrien Dewani – the British man accused of murdering his bride on their honeymoon – stayed at his house after sex. Leipold Leisser, who told police he was paid to inflict pain and humiliation on the millionaire businessman, said he had slept over after the first and second of their three meetings. ‘It was unusual and, in fact, he was the first ever client I allowed to stay at my home,’ said the 43-year-old German, who is based in Birmingham. Mr Leisser, who has claimed Dewani told him he wanted to ‘find a way out’ of his engagement, was put on the stand by prosecutors in Cape Town, South Africa. They said his evidence would give an insight into Dewani’s relationship with wife Anni, whose killing he is said to have ordered during a visit to the city in November 2010.

by juLiA gREgORy However, judge Jeanette Traverso refused to let Leisser carry on describing the sex sessions as she said Dewani, 34, had admitted he was bisexual. She ordered him to stand down until prosecutors could explain why his evidence was relevant. The trial also heard yesterday from Zola Tongo, the taxi driver convicted of murdering Anni in a plot with two hitmen. The 34-year-old said Dewani asked him to stage the car-jacking that ended with his wife’s murder. He said: ‘The gentleman said they must be robbed, they must drop me along the way and they must also drop him along the way, and then they must kill his wife – but he said kill a woman.’ The trial continues.

Following the break-up of Sonic Youth in 2011 – which some saw as such a cataclysmic event they wondered how the alt.rock community would survive – its members are all leading creatively fruitful, if divergent, lives. Moore has released several solo records but this is his first ‘electric’ LP, post-split. SY drummer Steve Shelley, My Bloody Valentine’s Deb Googe and guitarist James Sedwards join him for an exhilarating ride, charging through the Television/Neil Young-styled Speak To The Wild and joyously riffing Germs Burn, with the Led Zeppelin-ish Tape providing contrast. It’s both thrillingly familiar and newly energised. SO’C

★★★★✩

ooly G’s debut album, Playin’ Me, was one of 2012’s standouts. An emotionally resonant and intensely personal hybrid of deep vocal house, dubstep, drum’n’bass and illbient (as in ‘ill’ ambient) electronica, it moved the south londonbased vocalist, producer and DJ (real name Merrisa Campbell) out of the underground and away from the sound that initially had her labelled the queen of UK funky. Her follow-up to that record, which documented the breakdown of a relationship and its fallout, is very much more focused on fantasy than fact. Wait ’Til Night presents 12 lean and noir-ish, very contemporary R&B slow jams in which Cooly G – a mother of two and currently single – reveals her most romantic dreams and libidinous desires. The Weeknd and Banks are working in roughly the same ball park, but old-school dub and reggae are at the core of these tracks, which are also shot through with notes of darkwave, jungle and hip hop, Campbell’s soulful, often barely-there voice meshing with smoky synths and gently fractured beats. From the opening title track – with its sci-fi disco whooshes and unusually perky synths – to closer The 3 of Us, where is t Nigh il Cooly G expresses ‘T it s Wa ter in it her pain and anger far hot ay to w at the ex-partner n w o r g Ushe in who abandoned h t y n a Songz his family, it’s or Trey jure up n o c a confident and ld u t co wildes accomplished set, in their reams. almost as heavy on wet d the melodic hooks as it is the moody atmospherics. Take the sweetly suggestive like A Woman Should (‘don’t be shy, be my perfect guy’) and the lyrically direct, unashamedly lustful F*** With you, where she fantasises about having sex in a DJ booth. Campbell’s talent lies in always (under)playing it with honesty, rather than egotistical exhibitionism, and setting her expression to a sensitive simmer is where she triumphs. It’s what makes Wait ’Til Night far hotter, in its own way, than anything Usher or Trey Songz could conjure up in their wildest (wet) dreams. Sharon O’Connell

GAMECHANGERS

NICOLE SCHERZINGER bIG FAT LIe (rCA) ★★★✩✩

The shamazing former Pussycat Doll returns with a second solo album produced with TheDream and Tricky Stewart, the duo behind such humongous hits as Rihanna’s Umbrella and Beyoncé’s Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It). And in similarly up-tempo moments the record holds promise, from the out-there housey pop banger Your Love to the Prince/Janet Jacksonesque funk of Electric Blue. However, although Scherzinger’s decision to bare all – including a struggle with bulimia – is an admirable one, the default setting of this album is too often a mawkish confessional mode that totally fails to connect and often falls flat sonically. AD

ALSOOUT... GREAT PAGANS CUPID IN ERROR ★★★✩✩ This talented Brighton quartet is led by singersongwriter Alex Painter. They’re clearly in love with 1980s UK indie pop (Cocteau Twins, Prefab Sprout) but alongside the wistful hush of So Pure and spangled melancholy of Berlin Idiot, there’s the angry, Pixies-ish Silver Tongue. SO’C BEAR’S DEN ISLANDS ★★★✩✩ They’re hardly a household name but this London trio seems to be growing a faithful following. Their debut exists alongside the music of Ben Howard and Mumford & Sons on the spectrum of reflective, contemporary folk pop. It’s honest and undeniably accomplished – as the complex When You Break proves – if overly familiar. SO’C TI PAPERwORk ★★★✩✩ Triple Grammy winner TI’s album No.9 is no shrinking violet. Track titles such as G S*** and No Mediocre (feat Iggy Azalea) offer fair warning but there are brains tussling with the brawn. Pharrell produces the doo-wop title track while Victoria Monet adds sassiness to About My Issue. Not far off Nelly’s Country Grammar. James Day

BBC2, 9pm Knowing our place is Prof Brian Cox’s theme as he travels from the Atlas Mountains in Morocco to Venice and many points between. He’s not talking about class – Cox is considering how the evolution of understanding has shifted human perspective from placing us at the centre of the universe to the role of insignificant specks floating around in space.

3. The Great Interior Design Challenge

BBC2, 7pm Though you’d think twice about trusting your interiors to gushing judges Daniel Hopwood and Sophie Robinson, this is still worth catching if you’re a sucker for the makeover reveal. Amateur designers are let loose on real rooms and the plucky punters have to live with the results. First stop: the Cotswolds, England.

4. The Flash

Sky1, 8pm There’s always room in our lives for another fresh-faced young superhero and Grant Gustin attacks the role of DC Comics’ Flash with boyish gusto. This pilot episode fills us in on how the nerdy Barry turned into the zippiest guy on the block – cue lots of electrical crackling special effects – and there’s a baddie with a neat line in fog and levitation for Barry, sorry, Flash, to get to grips with. Fun.

6. The Missing

BBC1, 9pm Any drama about the disappearance of a young child will inevitably carry echoes of Madeleine McCann. But this tense and touching series rapidly

exerts an emotional power of its own. James Nesbitt is dad Tony, who loses his son Olly in a nightmarishly convincing scene in a crowded French bar. Hope fades as the local police fail to find Olly – and Tony’s life begins to crumble around him.

7. Life Is Toff

BBC3, 10pm If you remember C4’s The F***ing Fulfords from ten years ago, then this is the belated sequel. It confirms every suspicion you’ve ever had about the sort of chinless aristos who live in crumbling English country mansions, the twist here being it’s

the younger generation who must save the family fortunes.

8. American Horror story: Freak show

Fox, 10pm Ryan Murphy is getting the saccharin sweetness of Glee out of his system with the most bizarre American Horror Story yet. Tonight, a circus strongman with links to a freakish past joins the oddball cast.

9. Imagine… BBC1, 11.20pm

The arts magazine returns for a new series, kicking off with an exhaustive

two-part report on the continuing efforts to track down the priceless works of modern art which had been presumed destroyed by the Nazis.

10. Today’s Film: volver

Sky Select, 8pm The combination of Penélope Cruz and Pedro Almodóvar is a magical one in this 2006 dramedy which finds the acclaimed Spanish director going back to his roots. It’s a celebration of maternal love – and the ghosts that haunt us – that never tips into shallow nostalgia. Trivia fans should know Cruz’s posterior had to be padded to give her a more motherly appearance.

South AfricA coach heyneke Meyer has named five uncapped players in a 36-man squad for the Springboks’ European tour. the group contains 29 players involved in this year’s rugby championship, plus newcomers robbie coetzee, Julian redelinghuys, Nizaam carr, Jaco Kriel and Seabelo Senatla, while coenie oosthuizen and Johan Goosen both earn recalls. South Africa launch their tour against Joe Schmidt’s ireland in Dublin on November 8, which is followed by appointments with England, italy and Wales. ‘it’s wonderful to have this kind of continuity in selection, while the five uncapped players in the squad have all been rewarded for superb form throughout the season,’ Meyer told www.sarugby.net. ‘Many of the selected players were at our training camp in Stellenbosch last week, where we put in a lot of very hard work. We will have to hit the ground running when we assemble in Johannesburg on Wednesday before we depart on what will be a challenging tour.’ Players not considered for the trip due to injury include Saracens hooker Schalk Brits, Bath flanker francois Louw and scrum-half fourie du Preez. the involvement of ulster’s star scrum-half ruan Pienaar, meanwhile, will depend on a fitness test in Dublin next week. Struggling Marussia to miss US Grand Prix MARuSSIA will miss the united States Grand Prix this weekend after becoming the second Formula 1 team in four days to go into administration. London-based administrators FRP Advisory said in a statement that Marussia will ‘continue to operate’ but confirmed they would not take their place on the grid in Austin, Texas. The news comes hot on the heels of Caterham entering administration on Friday and being given special dispensation by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to miss both the uS and Brazilian grands prix while a buyer is sought – a courtesy that has also been extended to Marussia should they need it. Acting on behalf of Manor Grand Prix Racing Limited, which trades as the Marussia F1 team, one of the joint administrators – Geoff Rowley – said: ‘With the

On Monday Caterham driver Kamui Kobayashi used his Facebook page to express his disappointment that the situation will prevent him from racing. THAT was all heart in the south of France on Sunday lunchtime, but courage and guts will only get you so far and Leinster will need a cutting edge if they want to realise their European ambitions. But first let’s take a look at what’s good at Leinster right now. Two come-from-behind wins in the Champions Cup signal their composure and desire in this group of players shorn of gain-line behemoths and international know-how. Against a team bigger in physical stature, Leinster were expected to lift the tempo and tire out the legs of their heavier opponents. Castres’ intensity in defence kept the game tight and slow and in the final 10minutes Leinster relied on their superior fitness and experience to edge themselves clear. Hat tip to Ian Madigan who continues to shine as Leinster’s fulltime kicker and it’s a good feather in his cap to have been responsible for getting his team over the edge by the more traditional use of his boot rather than his razzle dazzle. With Rob Kearney, Shane Jennings and Mike Ross injured, Leinster were without a number of key leaders, and in Jennings and Ross, two real technicians of forward play. The absence of Sean O’Brien and Cian Healy is still being felt although there is no doubt that the back row and Jack McGrath are helping to even out their loss to injury.

4 clean breaks for

Leinster against Castres, with two coming from replacement Eoin Reddan

Eoin Reddan last week highlighted the reasons for Leinster stuttering in attack, in part because of O’Brien and Healy’s ball-carrying is not an option right now. Reddan cited the need to get to the breakdown faster and be as efficient as possible when they get there. When O’Brien and Healy burst through the gainline it makes the ruck a much more straightforward affair, but without it Leinster need a bit more speed and polish. While Matt O’Connor’s men are addressing the issue – and winning while not reaching their potential – it is to be noted that this was not Toulon and Northampton they trailed these past two weekends – it was Wasps and Castres. They need to regain their potency in attack (they did not look like scoring a try all day against Castres) and this is where Ben Te’o is the wildcard. If he can bring consistent, gain-line breaking threat to midfield he will provide Leinster with a wrecking ball that they really need right now. If Te’o can’t provide that foundation in Europe, then Leinster’s attack could remain bogged down in the construction stage.

fOOTbALL DigEsT Darko not giving up on reprieve at Leeds sACkeD Leeds boss Darko milanic says he is available to return to the club should they want him back. Leeds are to replace the 46year-old with Neil redfearn but milanic (pictured) has revealed he is still being paid by the club and is ready to return if requested. ‘I still have a contract on paid leave,’ milanic said. ‘During this time, I must be ready to take over the team if requested by the owner.’ Any return looks unlikely, however, with Cellino – who appointed milanic – admitting he had made a mistake.

Terry accuses United of strong-arm tactics by jAck fOx ChelSeA captain John Terry claims he and fellow defender Branislav Ivanovic were ‘double headlocked at every corner’ during the Premier league leaders’ 1-1 draw at Manchester United on Sunday. The Blues remained unbeaten but were denied an eighth win from nine matches by Robin van Persie’s last-gasp goal, which cancelled out Didier Drogba’s header. Van Persie’s equaliser came after Ivanovic had been sent off for two bookable offences after twice fouling Angel di Maria, but Terry suggested on Instagram it was the Chelsea right-back and himself who were sinned against, rather than sinners.

Dangerous Drog act a highlight for matic NeMaNJa MaTiC has saluted veteran striker Didier Drogba after the 36-year-old silenced some of the critics of his Stamford Bridge return with the opening goal in the draw at Manchester United. ‘Didier played very well against United, he looked like a 20-year-old out there,’ said Chelsea midfielder Matic. ‘He was very important, kept every ball, was very strong. He was one of our most important players.’ Blues boss Jose Mourinho was unhappy referee Dowd did not award his team a penalty in the first half when Ivanovic went down in the box during a tussle with United defender Chris Smalling at a set-piece. Just in front of Ivanovic, Terry also tumbled to the ground as he battled with Marcos Rojo, but no penalty was awarded. Terry wrote: ‘It shows how well we are playing when you come away from Old Trafford disappointed with 1 point. ‘Thanks to all the travelling fans for your great support. # £JtandIVAgotdoubleheadlockedfromeverycorner.” Dowd handed out seven yellow cards out to Chelsea on Sunday, meaning the Blues will be fined £25,000. n ChelSeA have appointed former liverpool managing director Christian Purslow as the club’s new head of global commercial activities.

Austin powers to the rescue for Redknapp

Two good: austin celebrates his first against Villa

CHARLIE AUSTIN struck at the double to ease the pressure on QPR boss Harry Redknapp. The former Burnley striker netted in each half to give the Hoops their second win of the season. Rangers were on their way to their first triumph in six matches when they took the lead against the run of play in the 17th minute. A long ball pumped forward by Richard Dunne was chested down by Bobby Zamora as he fended off Villa defender Ron Vlaar, leaving Austin to rifle in a low shot

Seize your best chance for glory, Souness warns Reds

LIVERPOOL legend Graeme Souness claims the Capital One Cup represents the club’s best chance of winning silverware this season. The Reds trail Premier League leaders Chelsea by nine points already and are stuttering in the Champions League following back-toback defeats by Basle and Real Madrid. But Brendan Rodgers leads his men into battle against his former club Swansea at Anfield tonight in the fourth round looking to

Eduardo Vargas escaped down the right to fire in a low centre which Austin whipped in at the near post with a first-time finish. Vargas should have added a third while Rob Green saved brilliantly from Tom Cleverley as Rangers kept their first clean sheet in halfa- dozen matches. Victory leaves QPR just two draws adrift of Leicester in 17th place while Villa stay a couple of points above the bottom three. Paul Lambert is under pressure as his side have lost five in a row, failing to score in any of them.

progress to the last eight. Souness, 61, claims Liverpool have to be among the favourites to win it – if Rodgers can outdo his old side. ‘This cup has to be their best chance of a trophy this year,’ said Souness, who played 247 games for the club. ‘You get through this one and you could play a small team at home next and before you know it you’re in the semi-finals. It’s a great opportunity for them.’ Rodgers will not want a

repeat of the thirdround tie with Middlesbrough which went to extra-time and then a lengthy penalty shoot-out before Liverpool eventually progressed, and Souness admits the Reds manager will face a selection dilemma. ‘As a manager you’re paid for that balancing act,’ Souness added. ‘Winning is a habit. This could be the game that kick-starts

Liverpool’s season. ‘You can never play in enough cup finals or win enough medals. ‘When you’ve been to a final and won a cup, you want it again and again.’

Liverpool ‘rely too much on Raheem’ Graeme SouneSS fears Liverpool’s reliance on raheem Sterling is a worrying sign, with the former Liverpool boss also accusing england of leaning too heavily on the teenager. The quicksilver attacker has come to the fore for club and country in 2014, to the extent Liverpool’s game plan in last week’s Champions League loss to real madrid appeared to be to give him the ball and hope he could make something happen. Souness believes he is being asked to do too much when there are more experienced players around him who should be shouldering the burden. ‘It is true [Liverpool] are placing a lot of responsibility on him,’ he said. ‘If you are relying on a 19-year-old to deliver in big games, it’s not how it should be.’
