Water, water everywhere

IT WILL cost 4 cent to have a pee from today – if you decide to flush, that is.

The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) released its final report yesterday, but many are still wondering whether they will be able to keep control of their water bills.

Starting from today, October 1, they can expect to pay €2.44 per thousand litres of water in – that’s €4.88 when the waste service out is taken into account.

However, the original six-month ‘assessed charge’ period – when water charges will be capped at unmetered levels – has now been extended to nine months.

The assessed charge is an estimate of how much water a household with a certain number of adult occupants will use.

‘Consumers paying for gold-plated superquango’ The report confirms that a children’s free allowance of 21,000 litres a year per child will be available and that the regulator will continue to monitor this in the coming months.

The annual household water services allowance is 30,000 litres. For a single-person household, this capped charge will equate to €176.

A household of four adults can expect to pay €483 a year.

CER commissioner Paul McGowan said: ‘Having considered the public comments received to the CER’s consultation on water charges, the CER is today bringing clarity to the matter and introducing a number of changes.

‘We will continue to monitor Irish Water closely in order to help ensure that the quality and efficiency of Ireland’s water system improve in the years ahead.’

However, Fianna Fáil TD Barry Cowen said: ‘Consumers will be paying the outlandish costs associated with setting up a gold-plated superquango that is Irish Water.’

Sinn Féin said the charges show that consumers will be paying ‘a lot more’ than had previously been indicated by the Government.

However, Taoiseach Enda Kenny insisted the average water bill would be less than €240 per year and that 80 per cent of monthly bills would be ‘less than €24’.

But Karl Lagerfeld enlisted Cara Delevingne and Kendall Jenner to turn the Chanel catwalk at Paris Fashion Week into a platform for feminism.

He gathered the most famous faces in couture – including Gisele Bündchen, 34, Georgia May Jagger, 22, and Jenner, 18 – to march down a custombuilt replica of a Parisian street called Boulevard Chanel.

GAA player is killed by garda car

TwO NuNs ARE kiLLED iN cOLLisiON wiTH pOLicE cAR TWo elderly nuns were killed in a crash involving a police car in Northern ireland. The women, who were from Belfast, had been travelling to a retreat near Newry, Co Down, when the accident happened.

Sister Frances Forde and Sister Marie Duddy died when the car they were travelling in collided with an unmarked PSNi car.

Father Eddie Magee, a spokesman for the Diocese of Down and Connor, said the community was stunned by the tragedy.

The accident happened on the Belfast Road, near the Derrycraw Road junction, just before 9.30am yesterday morning.

The nuns, who were travelling in a silver Renault Clio had been making their way to Dromantine College Retreat and Conference Centre on the Glen Road, Newry.

Three male police officers in an unmarked silver Mitsubishi (left) were not seriously hurt.

The Police ombudsman’s office (Poni) has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the accident and has sent a team to the scene.

A spokesman for the Police Service of Northern ireland said: ‘As is normal procedure, Poni have been informed and will now lead this investigation.’

A MAN who was knocked down and killed in an accident involving a garda patrol car was a well-known Gaelic footballer.

Eamon Carroll, 32, of Bellurgan, Co Louth, had played junior football for the county and celebrated winning a sixth championship with his local club, St Patrick’s GFC, on Sunday.

The accident happened on the Carlingford to Dundalk road at about 1.20am yesterday.

Players and members of St Patrick’s were said to be deeply shocked by the tragedy.

‘We are all devastated,’ club spokeswoman Rose McEneaney said. ‘Eamon was a lovely, lovely guy and a gentleman from his head to his toes. Our thoughts are with his family.’

It is understood that the garda car was not in pursuit of any other vehicle at the time of the accident, which occurred on an unlit section of the road near a filling station.

The incident has now been referred to the Garda Ombudsman’s office.

Mr Carroll was the son of Joe Carroll from Bellurgan Point, the former editor of The Dundalk Democrat, who still writes a sports column for the newspaper.

UNDER-fiRE fine Gael Seanad hopeful John McNulty has withdrawn from the forthcoming by-election to the upper house following the ongoing controversy. fine Gael was accused of ‘stroke politics’ after the Donegal businessman had been appointed to the board of the irish Museum of Modern Art by Arts Minister Heather Humphreys – less than a week before his name was put forward for the Seanad culture committee.

Last week he stood down from the board of iMMA claiming it precluded him from election. in a statement yesterday, Mr McNulty said he was withdrawing his name as he believed that ‘to contest the election would be an ongoing distraction from the critical work of

Government, which is to secure ireland’s recovery through job creation and increased investment’.

He said that he would now seek a fine Gael nomination to contest the next general election.

Speaking in the Dáil, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said that Mr McNulty would make an ‘excellent representative’ but accepted his own responsibility for the controversy.

Separately, former fG councillor Hilary Quinlan has stepped down from the board of irish Water following concerns over a conflict of interest with his day job.

Mr Quinlan is also a driver for a Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Paudie Coffey.

That department has responsibility for irish Water. it has also emerged that an unsuccessful Labour local election candidate has been appointed to the board of the irish Aviation Authority.

Pascal fitzgerald joined the board in August, after losing his council seat in May. Meanwhile, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin has announced ‘a revised model for ministerial appointments to State boards’.

Under the new measures, all vacancies must be advertised openly, candidates must meet ‘specific and detailed criteria determined by the relevant minister’ and applications must be ‘processed by way of a transparent assessment system’.

A 66-yEAR-oLD man has been shot in the leg in a gun attack at a Dublin pub. Gardaí said the injured man was in a bar in Cork Street, near Dolphin’s Barn, at about 11pm on Monday when the shooting took place. The gunman involved was wearing a balaclava.

The victim was treated in St James’s Hospital for what are nonlife-threatening injuries.

Gardai are investigating whether the attack was related to a row in the pub earlier in the evening.

Six Londoners unwittingly agreed to give up their eldest children in return for wifi access.

Researchers set up a wifi hotspot in London and the terms and conditions contained a ‘deliberately ridiculous’ clause that the person using the service was prepared to ‘render up their eldest child for eternity’.

A report, entitled Tainted Love: How Wi-Fi Betrays Us, by security company F-Secure, said six people still signed up.

State told to reveal Apple account book

Ireland was warned more than three months ago that it may have broken european rules on state aid in two tax deals it struck with apple.

In a preliminary finding over ‘backroom’ deals dating back to 1991 and 2007, the european Commission told the Government it has doubts over their compatibility with regulations.

PayPal and eBay split

PayPal is splitting from eBay and will become a separate and publicly traded company next year, it has been announced.

The separation is expected to occur in the second half of 2015.

The board of eBay decided the separation is the best path for growth and shareholder value creation for each business.

China’S phone regulator has approved the iPhone 6 for sale after manufacturer apple promised never to allow other governments access to users’ information. The announcement reflects Chinese unease about the reliability of foreign communications technology following disclosures about widespread US eavesdropping. apple said the phones will go on sale on October 17 in China, one of the company’s biggest global markets.

You must be proud of Transparent – Time magazine said it was the best new show of the year. I love talking

about it. I’m so proud of it. When I first read the script, I was like: ‘I’m in, I’m in.’ I’m 70 years old, you don’t get roles like this every day.

Did you do a lot of work to get it right? I was throw-up

nervous during the making of this.

My character, Maura, was very real to me. I wanted to make her human, vulnerable, not a saint but a woman who is in a vital, life-saving, crucial transition, making an escape to freedom in her own body. I had great consultants from the trans community. There were lots of talks, lots of field trips.

What reaction did you get?

Did people notice? Not as

said: ‘Daddy, I understand. Your character’s more comfortable as a woman.’ Prejudice is learned. She got it immediately and just accepted it.

And she was OK with you in costume? She knows what I do for a living and she knows it’s a character. My older daughter, who’s 40, came to the set and she said to me: ‘Dad, you’re pretty.’ I was very happy to hear that.

IRISH people are giving more to charity but still lag well behind the British public, the newly published Fundraising Performance Report has shown.

In 2012, Ireland’s charitable giving was revealed to be €852million, a 7 per cent increase on the previous year. Despite more people donating to a good cause, at €185 per capita, we are still beneath the UK level of €289 per head.

Hong Kong protesters defy call to end sit-in THOUSANDS more pro-democracy protesters descended on central Hong Kong last night, despite the region’s leader imploring them to disperse.

Organisers of the so-called ‘Umbrella Revolution’ had demanded a meeting with chief executive Leung Chun-ying to discuss China’s limitation of voting reforms in the financial hub.

However, the leaders of ‘Occupy Central’ were gearing up for the biggest day of protests so far as Mr Leung flatly refused their request on the eve of China’s National Day. ‘Only if Leung Chun-ying steps down can there be a new government to restart constitutional reform,’ Chan Kin-man, one of the co-founders of the Occupy Central movement, said.

BRITAIN’S RAF last night launched its first attacks on Islamic State (IS) militants since UK MPs voted in favour of action last week. Tornado jets struck and destroyed a weapons post and a vehicle with a mounted machine gun, the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.

The attacks, in north-west Iraq, came as RAF fighters flew their sixth sortie since the vote.

UK Defence secretary Michael Fallon said jets flying a reconnaissance mission from Cyprus were called to help beleaguered Kurdish troops.

‘They identified and attacked a heavy weapon position that was endangering Kurdish forces and they subsequently attacked an IS armed pickup truck in the same area,’ he said.

The MoD said a Paveway IV guided bomb was used to destroy the IS position and jets attacked the vehicle with a Brimstone missile. US planes have been attacking IS in Iraq since last month and, together with Arab partners, began missions in Syria last week.

Yesterday, the wife of another British captive, Salford taxi driver Alan Henning, 47, made an emotional plea to IS for his life. In a video message to the militants, Barbara Henning begged his captors to show ‘mercy’ and spare him.

The dad-of-two was kidnapped on an aid convoy to Syria and was threatened in a video following the murder of fellow British captive David Haines.

Keith Watson speaks to Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy as the new series gets started

F

ans of Cillian Murphy’s famous blue eyes will need to look away when Peaky Blinders returns to BBC2 tomorrow. They take a proper pasting, turning black from blue when the 1920s gangland saga returns to our screens.

‘My character Tommy shelby is a pretty intense man to play. He’s very physical, a street-fighting man and I’m a complete wimp,’ says Murphy. ‘so I had to get back to the gym to try to at least look like a bloke who could handle himself.’

The gently spoken Cork man has a host of acclaimed movies to his name, from indie hits Breakfast On Pluto and Disco Pigs to the big budget Batman trilogy. He’s a world away from hard-as-nails Tommy, the head of Peaky Blinders, the crime clan intent on stretching its empire from Birmingham to London.

t should come as no surprise that David Fincher (left) the director of Se7en, Fight Club and Zodiac, trades in brutal metaphors. When he approached Ben Affleck about starring in the big-screen adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel Gone Girl, he told the actor that a giant steamroller was going to run over him, very, very slowly.

‘I said to Ben that we have to crush your toes and we have to crush your heels,’ begins Fincher, ‘and then we have to crush your shins and then your knees, your femur, your pelvis and your ribcage. You are going to be vivisectioned; this is what the drama is about and Ben had to suck it up.’

Adapted for the screen by its author, Gone Girl recounts the story of Nick Dunne (Affleck), a former journalist who is suspected of killing his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike). ‘I couldn’t be happier about my cast,’ says Fincher, whose most recent films include the Social Network and the Girl With the Dragon tattoo. ‘And who looks more like Scott Peterson than Ben Affleck?’

Scott Peterson is the real-life offender, convicted of murdering his wife in 2002, whose story inspired the novel. ‘Peterson was a slow-motion train wreck in front of the world,’ says Fincher.

Affleck’s casting was predicated on more than this visual similarity, of course, and he does seem the perfect match. His Gone Girl character is both smart and smarmy and ends up enduring a painful relationship with the media. HARD Working Class Heroes is a festival with a difference, one that forgoes dodgy toilets and soggy fields for citycentre locations jam-packed with the best in home-grown musical talent.

Now in its 12th year, the annual showcase has grown from a humble jaunt into a multi-limbed, multi-venue spectacle. This year is typically gargantuan with 104 acts spread across seven locations. That’s 3,500 minutes worth of

music, so naturally, some pointers are welcome.

The likes of Ham Sandwich and Soak tick the ‘established artists’ box nicely but HWCH is really all about unearthing lesser-known gems. Local lads Spies arrive on the back of a stellar year having earned plaudits for their assured, yearning indie, while the atmospheric dreaminess of Cloud Castle Lake is always engaging.

Meltybrains? meanwhile, may well be

the curve-ball of the weekend with a live show that’s as bizarre as it is captivating.

During the day there’s dozens of other free gigs popping up, while the Digital and Tech segments will again have panels, pitches and workshops to aid budding musicians.

As we’re constantly being reminded, this is a golden time for Irish music.

Therefore, get out there and enjoy it.

Lee WestWood has added his voice to those backing darren Clarke to be named as europe’s next Ryder Cup captain.

World No.1 Rory McIlroy has already said he feels Clarke would be an ideal leader in the United states in two years, and the former open champion’s friend and long-time stablemate Westwood agrees.

‘It’s about the right time in darren’s career to take up the captaincy,’ said Westwood. ‘He is very popular in the United states and I think he would make a good captain.’

Clarke is the odds-on favourite to lead the europeans at Hazeltine in 2016, although he could face competition from Miguel Angel Jimenez, a vice-captain at Gleneagles.

Sky iS THE LiMiT fOR nicO Team Sky has announced the signing of Nicolas Roche as one of five new names for 2015. The 30-year-old, who has a wealth of Grand Tour experience, is joined in the British squad by Scot andrew Fenn, Czech rider Leopold konig, Dutchman Wout Poels and Lars Petter Nordhaug, who has signed up again for Team Sky after two years away.

Roche’s signing is significant as it strengthens Chris Froome’s support for the 2015 Tour de France, while weakening alberto Contador’s squad as the Irish elite cyclist was previously at Tinkoff-Saxo.

Roche, the son of 1987 Tour de France winner and world champion Stephen Roche, said: ‘It’s a great honour to sign for Team Sky and I have the opportunity to

ride with some of the best riders in the world. I feel that I’m still developing as a rider, so now’s the perfect time to join Team Sky and to continue my upwards path.’

Team Sky principal Sir Dave Brailsford said: ‘He brings a wealth of experience, having ridden 13 Grand Tours in his career, and that will be invaluable to the team.

‘Nicolas has the perfect character and temperament for us and we expect him to play a key role next season.’
