First test of new abortion laws by jOAnne Ahern

DV1

HEALTH Minister Leo Varadkar has appealed for privacy for the woman at the centre of what is thought to be the first test of Ireland’s new abortion laws. The woman was reportedly refused an abortion after being raped, under legislation introduced earlier this year. In a statement, Mr Varadkar said, while he did not wish to comment on the specific case, there were two very vulnerable people involved, a young woman and a child, ‘neither of Varadkar: ‘Respect’ whom should be seen as a news story or political cause’. ‘Both need care and compassion and I appeal to everyone to respect their privacy and anonymity,’ the minister added. Earlier, Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said that she was ‘concerned for’ the woman. ‘Clearly we passed legislation earlier in the year and will continue to monitor that legislation and see how it is being implemented,’ she said. Ms Fitzgerald’s comments came after it emerged the suicidal woman was refused an abortion under the Protection of Life During Pregnancy legislation. As per the law, the woman, who is not an Irish national, was examined by a panel of experts – two psychiatrists and a consultant obstetrician.
