Handsworth travels to Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney this March! They will spend five days with their Camberwell hosts while in Melbourne. Melbourne’s band director grew up in the country, and promises to take Handsworth to the real country to see kangaroos and koalas. The Handsworth Wind Ensemble will compete at the Australian National Band Championship while in Brisbane. Following the Championship, They will spend a day on the Gold Coast and then finish their tour in Sydney. Interestingly, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, and Vancouver rank as the best places to live on most world surveys.

Gabriola Retreat! 32nd ANNUAL HANDSWORTH SENIOR WINDS RETREAT WEEKEND Sept 19st – 21st. (Photo from 2007) … The cost is $150 per student on or before Tuesday, September 9, 2008.

The Senior Wind Ensemble will spend a day in May to tour and perform at the four Handsworth family of elementary schools. We will board our tour coach with instruments in hand and uniform attired to give a glimpse of the future to our future band students and band wanabes. HANDSWORTH JAZZ BANDS COMPETE AT ENVISION Senior Jazz Combo bring home several awards! The Junior, Intermediate, Senior Jazz Band & Combo all performed at the three day festival in early February, the largest and longest running jazz festival in western Canada. Brian Rapanos won, Best Senior Saxophone Player, and Adrian Duynstee won, Best Senior Bass Player awards. The Handsworth Senior Jazz Combo took home the Best Rhythm Section award. In addition, Brian was selected for a $1000 scholarship for Jazz Studies at Capilano College. Adrian received a 50-percent-paid tuition

scholarship for summer programs at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Both the Intermediate and Senior Jazz Bands and Combo received the highest mark of Excellent from the Festival adjudicators. Congratulations to all of these outstanding musicians!

ABOVE: City Hall Theatre, Brisbane What an unbelievable trip! Once the Aussie students left Vancouver on November, 28th, the countdown began. Only 105 days to go before we headed down under to Melbourne, Australia. On March 13th, our trip started off a bit rocky when only half of the band actually had seats on the first flight, and the other half was left waiting 12 hours for the next flight out. Trust me there are only so many card games, one can play! After a total of 37 hours traveling, we were all reunited at Camberwell High School in Melbourne where we were happily greeted by our host families. We had a few hours with them before heading off to a welcome party. It was great, because we got to hang out with everyone and get caught up. As the party was winding down, the eyes of Canadians were starting to droop and everyone was getting tired. So it was off to bed to get ready for a full day of Aussie filled adventure.

Sunday was completely ours to be with our hosts. Some of us went to the zoo, others to sovereign hill, or the beach. It was a beautiful day, 40 degrees and not a cloud in the sky, we all had sunscreen, but I”m not so sure everyone used it! Next on the itinerary was a day spent playing for the primary schools. Although our playing might not have been fantastic (we were still a little tired), they didn”t seem to care. Everyone was clapping and cheering, nothing but smiles were across their happy faces. After spending a day performing, we spent the evening with conductor Ms. Bunn. She gave us some good pointers. Mr. Woodward brought a few pointers back home with him as well. The days went by so fast and before we knew it, it was the last day that we had in Melbourne. We went off to spend one last day with everyone at Camberwell. Going to their school was a unique experience. It”s a very different set up and a much more relaxed environment than we

We had one final concert where both Handsworth and Camberwell played as individual bands, then together, and then it was good night for an early rise at 5 a.m. No one was too pleased with the early wake up call, but we mustered ourselves out of bed and hauled everything down to the school. We said our good-bye’s and headed to Brisbane where we were registered in the National Australian

Once the concert wrapped up, we had lots of fun at a manmade beach which seemed a little strange given that the real one was just steps away, but the good news was that there weren’t any jellyfish. That was great for the eight who got stung a couple of days before at the real beach, ouch!

After only three days in Brisbane, it was off to Sidney where we stayed at the Bondi Beach Hostel. Surprisingly, it was a castle, compared to the last hotel. All instruments were packed up and we had the last days of the trip to ourselves. We did everything; snorkeling, shopping and the Taronga Zoo. The Zoo was a short ferry ride, then a bus cont. on page 356

2008 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PAST STRINGS YEAR Thank you to all the great strings students who contributed to a wonderful year at Handsworth. PORTLAND TRIP The Portland trip was a definite highlight. A great time was had by all relaxing at the Marriott, exploring downtown Portland and rubbing shoulders with 1000 other string players from the Northwest. STRINGS EXTRAVAGANZA The Strings Extravaganza was a huge success once again. The Orange Jam included Dancers and each group performed very well in the outstanding venue of the Centennial Theatre. It started at the top of a mountain and on the way down, you walked past all the animals. First up were all the Aussie animals, like kangaroo’s and koalas, then there were elephants and mircats, which many found amusing. On our way back to the hostel, we stopped at the Opera House for a photo op. At the end of each day, many students made their way down to Bondi, until curfew. It was so nice to just sit on the beach, listening to the waves and talking with everyone, Ambleside just doesn’t seem to cut it anymore. The Aussie adventures ended on March 25th for half the band, who headed home to Vancouver that day. Due to the flight mix-ups, the other half had one last day in Sydney. Things were a lot quieter that evening everyone headed down to the beach for a final hurrah, then it started to rain. The smart ones headed back to the hostel, while others moved to an under cover area. It then started to rain so hard that it was angled sideways, and we didn t actually manage to stay dry. Fearing that it would never stop we ran back to the hostel in what now was a torrential downpour, flooding the streets. We all made it back safe and sound, and soaking wet, but just in time for curfew. Australia was a great experience that was filled with amazing memories none of us will ever forget.

The Portland Orchestra Tour VANCOUVER SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND HANDSWORTH HONOUR WINDS AT CENTENNIAL THEATRE There are few opportunities that offer a chance to have a private lesson, rehearse with, and perform with a mentor-professional. As a result of the North Vancouver School District’s corporate partnership with the VSO, this is made possible every year in April. This was Handsworth’s turn this year. Nineteen senior Handsworth honour Wind Ensemble musicians and 29 strings students, plus 22 professional wind, brass and percussion performers and 40 strings professionals from the VSO were led by VSO assistant conductor Evan Mitchell, on the evening of Wednesday, April 30th.

STRING ORCHESTRAS TRAVEL TO PORTLAND By Grade 9 Student, Richard Anderson This year the Handsworth strings program traveled to Portland Oregon for the annual trip. The trip took place from March 14 to 16 and included performances from the Concerti, Chamber, and Toccati strings groups in the music festival in Oregon. The adventure began on Thursday at noon when several excited musicians, adults, and one bus driver all piled into a bus to make their way off to Portland. Although the bus ride took longer than expected, due to slow moving traffic in Seattle, the musicians still found a way to entertain themselves throughout the grueling ride and the nasty fast food that they stopped for on the way. At around 9:00 p.m. the travellers arrived at the Marriott Inn in Vancouver, Washington. Tired from having traveled for the majority of the day, the exhausted musicians went straight to bed (Do you believe that?). The next morning,

The Wind Ensemble performed Alfred Reed’s “Hounds of Spring” and Oliver Rinaldi’s Nautical Rhapsody. The VSO/Handsworth Wind Ensemble’s 16 minute performance was astounding. The Strings played the St. Paul’s Suite by Holst with wonderful verve. Handsworth Vice Principal, Jeff Hasenauer, was very impressed by the quality of the performance and the professionalism of the evening.

after a late night, the strings players and their conductor awoke for an early breakfast and a series of rehearsals. Then it was off to downtown Portland for shopping and lunch. Some went shopping at a nearby mall while others enjoyed the on-and-off sun and rainy weather while seeing the sights. Having done enough exploring for one day the musicians returned to the hotel and then enjoyed bowling and pizza at Big Al’s Fun Centre. The next morning the strings players packed their belongings and prepared for the Festival performances as well as the adventure home. Dressed in suits, ties, black pants and blouses the performers were ready to perform at the college. Even though they did not place first in any of their performances they still learned more about the potential for which they can work. All that remained was a final group photo shoot before journeying home.

Strings Extravaganza UPCOMING STRINGS TOUR 2009 Concerti and Chamber Strings travel to Calgary, Banff and Lake Louise, departing at 7:30 a.m. on February 18th, and returning the morning of February 22nd. Strings students will give concerts in Calgary, attend a concert at the Banff Centre, swim at the Banff Hot Springs, as well as ski, snowboard or snowshoe at Sunshine Ski Resort, plus go ice skating on Lake Louise. Strings Students: Richard Anderson, Andrew Chang, Josh Chao, Esmee Colbourne, Xander Deggan, Juliana French, Kiarash Hessami, Max Lai, HoJung Lee, Casper Leung, Gabriela Penkov, Hayden Sidney-Philips, Brittany So, Duncan Stratton, Vivian Sue, Ben Tucker, Graham Whyte, Ryan Wise, and Jasper Yoo. Students were selected on the basis of musical experience, ability, and the instruments they play. As well, care was taken to choose students who represented all the North Vancouver District secondary schools. Participants will have tickets for the concert. Others may order tickets through the Centennial Theatre Box Office. Strings students will receive two master class workshops with musicians of the Symphony on February 9th and 23rd. Festivals

APRIL Junior & Senior Jazz Bands @ the 33rd annual BC Interior Jazz Festival in Kelowna. After a couple of morning dress rehearsals, the 35 musicians of the two jazz bands loaded the coach for the five-hour ride to Kelowna. The day and two evenings at the Festival included two evening concerts, performances, adjudicator clinics, and instrumental master classes. Our time at the Marriott was mostly spent on the four-story water-slide, eating, and celebrating Sang Kyu’s birthday LEFT: These students were all in the Handsorth music program in 2010. They started performing in elementary school. Here they are posing in the Handsworth Court yard in 2005. MAY Intermediate Concert & Jazz Bands in Kamloops on a performance tour. An early Thursday departure brought us to Silver Creek Elementary in Hope for a road concert. After checking in to our Kamloops motel and a dip in the pool we headed off for a couple of games of cosmic bowling. The next day heard the band at Parkcrest Elementary and Beattie School of the Arts. The evening was spent at Aberdeen mall and movie complex. Saturday started with more instruments on our lips (except percussion). This time it was a concert & jazz band workshop with school Principal “Dr.” Syd Griffith. Next, we were off to the BC Wildlife Park and the evening at the Sagebrush Theatre for the Kamloops Symphony performance. The return trip home on Sunday saw the bands spend most of the day at Hat Creek Ranch near Cashe Creek, and Hell’s Gate over the Fraser River.

STRINGS TRIP TO CALIFORNIA WAS A ROLLER COASTER RIDE! The strings students returned from the trip to California much wiser about roller coasters as well as performing in public. The Disney personnel were very impressed with the students’ appearance and performance. The performance at the Orange County Waldorf School was also a rousing success and great fun. Five days of fun, laughs, music, beaches and motion sickness were enjoyed by all. It was great to have Mr. Brad Wise along as well as our wonderful sponsor and chaperone for everything, Hermila Gallaher. Thank you!

Handsworth Orchestra Mr. Van Ooyen will be celebrating his retirement after 35 years of teaching music at a musical benefit on June 4th at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Proceeds will go towards Saint James Music Academy and Thrive City Summer Music Camp in Baltimore, Maryland which helps low-income children get a music education. STRINGS ORCHESTRA TOUR - LOS ANGELES / ANAHEIM / SAN DIEGO, January 29 - February 2, 2010. Twenty-five people will be travelling on this strings tour. The tour orchestra will have a special repertoire list to prepare. The tour includes a city tour of Los Angeles, a performance in Anaheim at Disneyland, unlimited rides at California Adventure &/or Disneyland Theme Parks, the San Diego Zoo, Horton Plaza, school performances in Huntington Beach, plus loads of fun and adventure. • Selected strings students will perform Britten’s “Simple Symphony” with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on March 29th at Centennial Theatre. The music staff of Sab Kabok and Keith Woodward extends a warm welcome to all music parents and students to the upcoming school year. We are pleased with the return of Mr. Bob Rebagliati to the concert and jazz bands sectional teaching staff this year. “Reb” is a master percussionist, nationally acclaimed jazz rhythm section teacher, and retired music educator after 29 years of service at Handsworth. We are excited to announce Mr. Jim Pinchin as our woodwind sectional teacher for concert and jazz bands. Mr. Pinchin has a long distinguished history as a professional musician, composer, and teacher. Sectionals will be given during regularly scheduled timetabled band classes

2011 SUPER STUDENTS What are “Super Students?” They are students that take pride in Academic, Leadership, Music, and Sport activities. Ever since the “Stanford University Interview,” universities have been finding ways to separate the all-round super students from the smart-only students. Now, virtually all top universities use the interview as one way to help separate the best from the best. Universities recognized that top academic marks were only a small part of an indicator of success at university, and for that matter, life. What they found was that students who took part in three other activities were much more likely to have success at university, and in life. They determined that those three other activities include: band or choir, student leadership, and varsity sports. Some world countries have students specialize in a type of activity at an early age. Eastern Europe, Cuba, and much of Asia does this. On the Handsworth band tour to Cuba in 2000, our tour guide could not understand how so many of our band students could take part in sports, leadership and music — all at the same time, year after year until graduation. In Cuba, you audition for an Academic, Athletic, or Arts School at around the age of 10 years. TheOrchestra! Chris Best: Sab Kabok, who succeeded Peter van Ooyen as Director of Strings in the Fall of 2010 was born in Europe and brought up in the classics at a young age. I was interested in hearing how he wound up in North Vancouver. Sab Kabok: I come from a musical family. My dad was a violinist. He ran a small orchestra back home in Yugoslavia. We lived there and then in Hungary until I was thirteen or fourteen. Education in Europe is much more formal or strict than in Canada. It is also not very inclusive. You start playing an instrument at age six. Music is not part of the mainstream education curriculum. The music schools are state funded. I came to Canada in 1992. My instrument was the violin. My parents were not rich. I took a few years off. I started studying again with my dad as that was all we could afford. I was talented but I didn’t like to practice. My dad said, “Either you practice or switch to the viola.” So I became a viola player. As a teenager I didn’t take music in school. Instead, I was involved in the sciences. After high school I took one year of sciences at the university level and then decided music was where I wanted to be. I enrolled in Capilano College in North Vancouver for one year and then I transferred over to UBC music. I got my degree but I didn’t feel like I was a real musician. I considered going overseas but I finally wound up finding Robert Rozek at the Vancouver Academy of Music. He was very strict. I studied with him for four years. He said, “If you study with me you will get it.” I applied for the Diploma Program and had master classes each week. I really got my act

In 2011, we put on the Strings Extravaganza Concert. Strings Extravaganza was actually a Peter van Ooyen project. It ran for years before I came. In 2011, I simply continued his legacy by deciding to keep this event alive under my watch for the Handsworth zone students and families. We made a short trip that same year to Seattle, Washington. The concert band toured England and Paris that year. David Overgaard conducted the band on that tour.

together. I went from barely being able to play my instrument to soloing with orchestras. I studied conducting and chamber music as well. When it came time to graduate he was pushing me to go to grad school in Germany. I knew if I was going to stay in Canada I would need to go into public education. It was a hard decision. Finally, family won out and I decided to stay in Canada. I started a community orchestra in New Westminster. I discovered I enjoyed working with student ensembles. There was Nick Urquhart, another young teacher who now teaches at Killarney Secondary school and a few others who were all heading towards becoming string educators in school based programs.

Did you know that students can earn money to help pay for music trips? Every year music students are presented with travel opportunities including one day festivals, multi day or weekend trips, and for Seniors or Strings students, every second year, an International Trip. Students are able to earn funds by selling magazine subscriptions in October and Purdy’s Chocolates in November. They have also in past years earned funds by moving desks after exams in June. Student’s individual earnings are calculated and tracked. Students can use the funds fully for any trip that requires payment or they can save up for several years to spend it all on one trip. Students may only spend the money on music trips – money cannot be withdrawn for any other reason. Students who graduate without using all of their account may pass the account on to a younger sibling in the music program. Funds that aren’t used will revert to the general HMPA account a year after the student graduates.

On June 20, 2013 the handsworth Senior jazz Band performed on the “Sounds of Youth Stage” at the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival at Ronson Square in Downtown Vancouver. The event was supported by the Surrey School Board, the Vancouver School Board and the Kiwanis Music Festivals.

2013 On Sunday, May 12, a Universal Bus picked everyone up at Handsworth School and drove to Canada Place. At 1:00 am, we all boarded the NCL Pearl Cruise Ship at the Port of Vancouver. The Pearl was commissioned in 2007 and is a 95,000 ton ship that holds a total of 2400 passengers and 1100 crew members. At 4:00 pm, the ship departed. It sailed along the Vancouver Inner Harbour and under the Lions Gate Bridge. A group dinner was held in the Summer Palace Dining Room. On MONDAY May 13, we cruised the Inside Passage. From 9:00 am – 12 noon there was a 90-minute concert band workshop with Dr. Dennis Prime from the University of Alberta. The strings ensemble

Alaska Cruise Ship participated in a 90-minute workshop with Lee Duckles, in the Indigo Extension. That afternoon we enjoyed a variety of onboard activities (swimming, bowling, rock climbing and arcade games to name a few). When we were hungry we could choose from 16 dining options onboard the NCL Pearl. In the afternoon our school group partook in band and choir workshops on board the cruise ship. From 5:30 – 6:30 pm, there was another group dinner in the Summer Palace Dining Room. On Tuesday May 14, at 2:00 pm, we arrived in Juneau, the capital city of Alaska. Juneau has been

On May 18 from 5:30 – 6:30 pm, we had another group dinner in the Summer Palace Dining Room. At 6:00 pm, we arrived in Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia. An optional walking tour was offered complimentary to all participants. At 9:00 pm, we returned to the ship for our last evening at sea. At 11:59 pm, the ship departed for Seattle, WA.

called “Alaska’s Peak Experience” due to its unparalleled glacier viewing from such places as Tracy Arm Fjord, the Juneau Icefields and Glacier Bay National Park. Our Sr. Winds performed at Juneau-Douglas High School. Afterwards, we boarded a coach and transferred to Mendenhall. From 4:00 – 6:00 pm, we visited the Mendenhall Glacier. The visitor center is set in a cliff above the valley floor, with huge curving windows offering an uninterrupted view of the glacier. Exhibits and a new film helped show how the Mendenhall

Performance Tour Glacier moves and shapes the valley ecosystem. Several trails are based from the Center grounds and offer an alternative, adventurous way to experience the glacier and surrounding areas. From 6:00 – 6:30 pm, we transferred to the Chapel by the Lake. At 7:30 pm, we all enjoyed the Freestyle Buffet upon our return to the ship. At 10:00 pm, the ship departed for Skagway. On Wednesday May 15 at 7:00 am, we arrived in Skagway, Alaska’s gold mining town. In a single year from 1896 to 1897, this remote town grew from a few tents to a city of 20,000 gold seekers. Today, travelers come to experience Skagway’s charming boardwalk lined with buildings that replicate the Gold Rush days. At 4:00 pm, we returned to the ship. From 5:30 – 6:30 pm, there was another group dinner in the Summer Palace Dining Room. From 7:15 – 8:15 pm, each ensemble performed for 30 minutes in the Spinnaker Lounge on the ship for cruise guests. On Thursday May 16 we were at sea. From 9:00 am – 12 noon, there was a 90-minute concert band workshop with Dr. Dennis Prime from the University of Alberta. The strings ensemble participated in a 90-minute workshop with Lee Duckles, again in the Indigo Extension. The rest of the day was spent enjoying any number of the available activities on-board, from swimming, bowli ng or even catching a movie! Again, from 5:30 – 6:30 pm, it was a group dinner in the Summer Palace Dining Room. On Friday May 17 at 6:00 am, we arrived in Ketchikan, known for its Native American culture. From 8:30 – 9:00 am, we transferred by coach to Ketchikan High School and met Mr. Nelson at the main office. From 9:30 – 10:00 am, the concert band performed. From 10:00 – 10:15 am, the concert band and strings ensemble traded places. And from 10:15 – 10:45 am, the strings

Everyone spent the rest of the day on the ship, participating in one of the many activities available. From 11:30 – 12 noon, we returned by coach to the ship.

On Saturday May 19 at 8:00 am, upon arrival, we disembarked and boarded a waiting coach to return to North Vancouver. 12:30 pm was the estimated arrival time at the school and a great experience was had by all.

Chris Best: Tell us how you arrived at Handsworth? Sab Kabok: I applied to the Department of Education at UBC and did my practicum at Churchill Secondary. Greg Hurst was the instrumental music educator. I graduated from the Music Ed course at UBC in 2010. It was a time of a lot of cutbacks. I thought I was going to get on with the Catholic School Board. There was a band position open at St. Thomas Aquinas. I made it through the

first round but not the second. I think now that it was a blessing in disguise. Sean Gallagher at Affinity Tours told me that Peter van Ooyen might be leaving Handsworth Secondary. I applied to a few other school districts, namely North Vancouver and Surrey. Surrey called me to be a TOC for September. I went to Hungary to visit my uncle. That summer. I got a telephone call a two a.m. informing me that there was an opening at Handsworth Secondary. “Can you come in Tuesday?” they asked. “That was impossible,” I said. I arrived back in town a couple of days befor Labor Day, had an interview and I got the job. I was hired to teach both elementary and secondary strings. I basically maintained the same courses that Peter had set up. We now have in the district the Lions Gate Youth Orchestra which fills the void left when the North Vancouver Youth Symphony ended several years ago. There are about eighty-six students in all in the Handsworth Strings program. They all come together in June for the year end grad concert. I also have a lunchtime advanced class so the better players can all come together. I no longer teach at Canyon Heights

2014 Chris Best: Tell me about your strings program at Handsworth Sab Kabok: I kept the three classes that Peter built up: The Toccati Strings, The Concerti Strings and The Chamber Strings. I have tried to follow the European model rather than American program model. I like playing classical music. I also like to have my groups very disciplined. I try to encourage soloists as much as possible. We recently performed the original version of one of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concertos. I have tried to move away from the overly commercialized American orchestral versions. I guess you could say I am a traditionalist. Unfortunately, music educators and big retailers are all connected through conferences, composers as well. It’s not a system I agree with. I like to stick to the classics.

Chris Best: Tell me about funding and festivals? Sab Kabok: Funding is good for the Handsworth program. If I had more money I would probably buy more music and instruments. I feel trips should be a compliment to your program not an integral part of it. There are schools on the eastside of Vancouver that cannot afford to travel. For festivals, we always attend the Fraser Valley Kiwanis Festival in Langley. They offer a trophy for the most promising group. It is just a well run festival in my opinion.

TheOrchestra! Chris Best: How would you describe your phiosophy of teaching? Sab Kabok: I guess my philosophy of music education would be, I try to get the best out of what I have. The kids get the experience of working together in a group, comradery, leadership, how to play in balance with others. The one thing that bothers me about the North American philosophy of being in an ensemble is after school the kids all quit playing. In Europe, a lot of universities have their own orchestra. In Hungary, the humanities department has its own orchestra. They came to Vancouver one year. All of our school programs would be much stronger if there were more student based orchestras at our universities, SFU and UBC.

2014 Final Farewell Concert for Mr. Woodward at festivals. I also managed to fit in three summer sessions at the University of Victoria School of Music that ended with an M. Ed. Degree in Conducting. At Handsworth Secondary School, there were many local, provincial, national, and international ensemble highlights measured in competitive terms: “First Place” this, “Most Outstanding” that, “Gold Awards,” and so on. But what really warms my heart is my help to co-found the North Vancouver Elementary Band & Strings Parents Association in 1992, and later working closely with the Handsworth Music Parents Association to help raise money for the music program. My fondest memories over the years were always outside the classroom, at school concerts, tours to five different continents, and my 18 consecutive years teaching at Kamloops Interior Summer School of Music. And through those events, it’s my feelings about those teachers, students, parents of students, and students of

In 2015, my first year at Handsworth, I took members of the Senior Wind Ensemble to New York City. Groups also attended festivals in Nelson and Whistler BC. It was an amazing trip and very educational. The students got to see all the sights and visit landmarks they had heard about such as The Empire State Building, Central Park and the Statue of Liberty. I had to fill some pretty big shoes so going to NY was great beginning to what has proven to be a great challenge. I learned a lot under Bob Rebagliati and Keith Woodward and was looking forward to putting what I learned to good use While we all loved NY, I could hardly wait to get back and continue the journey of leading the famous Handsworth music program.

Concerts Since taking over the program from Keith Woodward I have pretty much done everything as he had done. We haven’t gone on the Senior Band Retreat in September for a couple of years but I think it is a valuable activity and I am trying to bring back the tradition. The homecoming concerts that Bob Rebagliati started and that were so successful fell by the wayside some time ago. I would like to start them up again but that may be more than I can do. We have the Prelude Concerts, the Christmas Concert, Juzt Jazz, Wonderful Winds, and the year end Finale Concerts.

The Handsworth Music Parent’s Association is great! The music program would not be as strong without them. There are some who have been there since the time of Keith Woodward and there are new parents as well. I would like to see it grow in the future. The current President, Kathleen Whyte, is wonderful and we all work very well together. Sab Kabok is the Strings teacher at Handsworth. His groups are very successful and it is a great pleasure to work on the team with him.

Chris Best: I asked David Bradshaw who has taken over the Handsworth Music program this year from Keith Woodward the process involved in taking over such a large and prestigious high school music program. David Bradshaw: I was watching for the job posting for the Handsworth band position. Keith Woodward was retiring . My kids both had attended Handsworth. I knew Keith and had worked with him for ten years as a sectional instructor on percussion with his students and also as a chaperone on his band trips. I helped on his senior band retreat every year. I was a chaperone in 2oo4 on his first trip, which was to China. It was a great prelude for what lay in store for me. In 2014 I sent in my application. I received an email from Mark James, Principal of Handsworth at the time, saying that I got the job.

The teacher strike began the next day. That was it, no interview. I was probably the most senior music teacher to apply and I certainly knew the program. I also knew the kids and had had success teaching in elementary.

Handsworth Music remains a strong program today and most of the credit goes to the great teachers that preceded me. Bob Reblagliati built a very strong program and Keith Woodward carried on the tradition of excellence. I hope that I am able to maintain this high standard and when I retire I would like to leave a thriving musical program!

Memories! Jazz Festival. I have been unable to go back to the Kiwanis Concert Band Festival because of trip schedule conflicts but I hope to include that event again this year. We still have four concert bands and three jazz bands three string classes and as of last year we also have a choir.

Chris Best: Tell me what is in store for this year by way of trips and festivals? David Bradshaw: We make two or three trips each year and I always enter the Kiwanis

Chris Best: Where was your first teaching assignment after you graduated from UBC? David Bradshaw: Perhaps my professor at UBC knew I needed a job to support my family so in the fall of 1992 when my year at UBC was over he managed to get me into North Surrey Secondary with Jeff Hansen. Jeff’s wife, Mary, went on maternity leave at this time (9). Mary was the choral director. When the semester was over I was two days short of getting a continuing contract in Surrey and they wouldn’t extend it. I was able to continue as continued at the right

At the end of my first year of teaching at Lynn Valley Elementary I told my principal that I wanted to teach band. She pulled some strings and got me teaching band at Lynn Valley giving me full time employment at the same time. At the final concert in my first year my dear principal told the parents that we have the best band in the universe. She was a great supporter of mine. Her name is Loreen Barnett. She was amazing.

a substitute in the district. There were about seventy elementary schools in Surrey so I travelled a lot. I did that for more than a year. Chris Best: How did you wind up in North Vancouver? David Bradshaw: When my wife’s father passed away we received an inheritance. We looked

around for a house to buy and decided to move to North Vancouver. The person I bought the house from had some connections and he may have had some part in getting me on as a Teacher-On-Call in North Vancouver. . Throughout the 1993-4 school year I substituted in both Surrey and North Vancouver school districts. I usually went to Surrey because it was larger and called earlier. I told North Vancouver to keep trying because I really wanted to teach close to where I lived.

Trip to New York The New York City trip was a great success. Here we are pictured below left with the statue of the bronze bull in South Manhatten near Wall Street on one of our guides tours. There was snow in Central Park when we visited the John Lennon Memorial. Here we are picured at the left on the steps of the metropolitan Museum of Art. We were allowed to wander the sections of our own choice. Some of us took art pads and made drawings. I still have some sketches I made that day. David Bradshaw

If it had anything to do with music the students were up for it. I personally would have loved just to see the musicals but another time.

There was so much to see in New York City. We always managed to get our photo taken by some monument as you can see on the left. Still don’t remember what it was all about.

WHO’S IN THE BAND?

The 2015/16 school year was a special year. I rehearsed the North Van District Honor Band which played with the VSO. At the end of the year our senior jazz band played in the TD International Jazz Band Festival in downtown Vancouver. Our venue was the Youth Showcase at Robson Square. A highlight of this past year was; in November the Handsworth Senior Wind Ensemble was asked to perform at the Chan Center in a concert with the UBC Chamber Winds conducted by Christine Reardon MacLellan. It was an awesome experience. We performed the Bukvich Symphony No. 1, In Memoriam – Dresden 1945 in a collaboration with Art students and Dance students from the high school. We received an Arts Umbrella Grant to do this. An artist came in and worked with Cont. page 430

We were going to use India ink in the live Art projections but the Chan Centre building directors were concerned it might get on the hardwood floors so that idea was scrapped. Christine is a friend of mine. Years ago when I was preparing the NV District Elementary Honor Band to play with the VSO I met Christine and she helped in the preparation. She was our band adjudicator in Sun Peaks. She came up with the idea to include a high school group in the November concert with the Chamber Winds and she thought of me, and the Handsworth ensemble. We are very thankful for having the chance to play on the beautiful stage where so many famous people have walked across or performed. Handsworth Music has the students performing many times thoughout the school year including at the school as well as off site.

Festivals Chris Best: David, I know musical theatre is something enjoy. How did you get involved doing that? David Bradshaw: I applied to the education department at a number of schools across the country in 1991. I was accepted at U.B.C. My education degree was an eleven-month program. Later I upgraded my qualifications and with a diploma. I did my practicum with Charlie Wood at Prince of Wales Secondary. At PW I heard there was a musical being prepared so without much thought I went to see the teacher responsible, Fred Galloway. I asked him if he needed a musical director and he took a chance on me. I wound up co-directing the musical Hair and I was even paid five hundred dollars for doing it. The musical extended my practicum by three weeks. The first two weeks were no problem because there were no classes at UBC. In the third week however my classes resumed and we were in production for the musical. My professor at UBC said I did a great job with the show. Some years later I ran into the bass player from the production. He said that Hair was the best part of his high school experience! Chris Best: Were your parents David involved in music? David Bradshaw: My father, Lloyd Bradshaw, was an organist and choral director of considerable stature based in Toronto. He was: the chorus director of the Canadian Opera Company for a num-

Chris Best: Tell people what kind of background someone like you has today in order to run a first class music program. David Bradshaw: At an early age I studied the piano. In elementary school I played the trumpet and in junior and senior high school I moved over to percussion. I played in the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra for five years and in 1980 I went into the music department at the University of Toronto. I graduated with a performance degree in percussion. I studied under Russell Hartenberger who was a member of Nexus inCont. from below left quite famous. I got my love of music from my parents. Jean Ashworth was a protégé of my father. She sang in one of my father’s choirs and remains a friend of the family today. My mother was an amateur violinist.

WHO’S IN THE BANDS/ ORCHESTRAS?

For the tour this year we all went to Cuba. It was an exciting trip. It was not only music students but drama and dance students as well. The weather was beautiful, always 87 degrees and the water warm. We could have stayed there forever. It was fun seeing all the old American cars in Havana, the capitol. They sure kept them in good condition although we heard they had trouble getting parts for them if they broke down. Then they would have to make the parts themselves because of the embargoe on Amerian goods. We all enjoyed our trip to Cuba and like New York two years earlier, longed to go back someday!

The Cuban people were marvelous and greeted us with open arms.

Concerts Chris Best: I heard that you did a lot of elementary school teaching before you came here to Handsworth. David Bradshaw: My professor at the University of British Columbia told me that there are not as many high school jobs as there are elementary. He told us that we may have to take an elementary position and work our way up. So that was my plan. I didn’t realize that it would take twenty years. I was the classroom teacher and the band teacher at Lynn Valley for twenty years. Twenty percent

of my teaching time I was at other elementary schools. The bands sounded good in all of the schools where I taught. At Lynn Valley I put in a lot of extra time with the kids. I did sectional rehearsals with the grade fives. They moved ahead very quickly as a result. We had a jazz band.

My Lynn Valley jazz band was fun. We always got a gold rating. We were the only jazz band in the elementary class. Josh Capri teaches at Lynn Valley these days. My last five years at Lynn Valley I invited classroom students in grades four through seven to join a choir. The purpose of the choir was to enter it into the Kiwanis Choral Festival. We put it together after Christmas and by April they had learned three songs to sing. That was a joy!

I took my Lynn Valley band into the Kiwanis Music Festival every year for eighteen years the jazz band for fourteen, and the choir for five years. Nobody else did that at the elementary level. We didn’t have a North Van district festival at that time. It didn’t start until about 1997. Lasse Leslie was the music teacher who coordinated the elementary band and strings program in North Vancouver. Lynn Valley Band usually got a gold rating whenever we entered the Kiwanis Music Festival. We got a silver rating once. I have heard that Bob Rebagliati would throw out the award if they received a silver rating. I’m sure that Handsworth groups getting silver didn’t happen often.

Festivals Chris Best: I asked Mary Hume Backun what she did after she left handsworth in 1986. I thought everyone would like to know. Here is what she told me. Mary Hume Backun: In 1987, I left teaching for a period of time to start raising my family. My return to teaching began when I found out that my son Jeremy’s band program was being cut in ’98. I went to my son’s principal and said, “I used to be a band teacher. Would you like me to take the program for awhile?” He said, “We couldn’t do that but if you would like to start teaching again you can teach band at Blueridge Elementary.” So I did! I taught there until 2002 when I moved to St. George’s School. It

was fun teaching my son at Blueridge. Jeremy became part of the Windsor music program and Josh came here to St. George’s and went through the band program. They both work alongside Morrie now in Backun Musical Services. Jeremy is the Vice President of Operations and in charge of engineeringand Josh is in charge of Logistics and Quality Control. I had known Marko Rnic and Alise Keefer, his wife, for many years. Marko had been trying to get me to come teach at St. George’s. Finally, a timely opportunity presented itself to come and join Rob Murray at the Junior school and I was hired. I love it! I have been here sixteen years. Rob Murray and I co-direct the ensembles. Rob is a brass specialist and I am the woodwind specialist (just like Handsworth). Our philosophy is built upon one of the North Texas music teaching methods. We have a huge program. In grade five we start everyone for a half

year on trumpet and for the last half they switch to clarinet. Everyone has an experience on both. In grade six every boy in the school is in band. There are seventy-six students in the grade six band. In the grade seven band there are ninety-six. In grade five we have forty-eight. Next year we will have one more block of grade fives. There are over two hundred and twenty-five juniors this year enrolled in the music program. We teach the whole music program but we do it using instrumental music as the focal point. Many of the boys continue in the wonderful music program at the senior school, led by the head of music, Marko Rnic and by Dr. Dean Markel. It is a blessing to be involved in such a strong music program. We are most fortunate to have the support of the administration and parents of the Saints community.

The Trip toCuba! Our trip to Cuba in 2017 was mostly band students but it include a few dance and fine arts students as well. This was fine becasue it gave us teachers a chance to connect across disciplines. We all loved the Cuban students. They were all so happy and always smiling. The most interesting things that we did were: we enjoyed a Cuban percussion workshop as well as a dance session we visited. We also took in the Bonavista Social Club dance performance and hit the beach a couple of times including Cayo Coco. We all had a ton of fun going out on two boats to a reef off shore and snorkeling in the clear, blue water. Cuba is known for its people, its culture and its beautiful environment. While playing an arrangement of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at an elementary school the Cuban kids started to sing along. It was a special moment for me! David Bradshaw

On the first day in Cuba we went to see the 9:00 firing of the canon in the old fort, San Carlos de Cubana in Havana. The gun has been shot every evening since the eighteenth century (blanks of course). They put on a little show with colonial uniforms and pageantry.

The students connected very quickly in spite of the language barrier. At one point they all gathered round while students tried to flip and land a half full water bottle; all cheering when someone succeeded. We brought supplies and instruments to donate to the elementary school. One of our students gave his old drum set to their music program.

We were very well received and everyone wanted to go back the following year.

The orchestra worked on the Rachmaninoff piano Concerto No. 2 (II mvt.) featuring Harim Park as a soloist. The piece was featured at the Strings Extravaganza concert in March. This piece was performed at graduation in the Orpheum in June. performed at graduation in the In March 2017, we combined again with the band and Fine Arts Department to travel to Cuba. The difficulties we encounter with trips is that we do not always have the instrumentation to make up a full orchestra. Nor do we always have the money or the numbers – given that the string program is less than a third of the size of all bands combined at Handsworth.

Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, is an eighteen-piece big band founded in 2005. In 2009, the group released their first studio album, Infernal Machines, on New Amsterdam Records, an independent record label in New York City. The album received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album and a Juno Award nomination in Canada for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year. It was recognized multiple times in the Down Beat magazine Critics’ Poll.

James Mitchell studied flute at the Vancouver Academy of Music and then went on to complete a BMus at the University of British Columbia and a MMus at the University of Edinburgh. Over the decades I’ve performed on both the west and east coasts of Canada, the western United States, and also in Scotland, England, France and Switzerland. After tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson hired her to play with his quartet in 1986, Rosnes began an international career. In 1988, she was a member of the Wayne Shorter Band and in 1989, she joined trombonist JJ Johnson’s Quintet and remained his pianist of choice until he retired in 1997. In 1989, she also began working with tenor master James Moody and was the pianist in his quartet for the next 20 years. Rosnes frequently performs with vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, and recorded “For Sentimental Reasons” with his quartet in 2007. I find it very encouraging in these days of government cutbacks everywhere that the music programmes are still strong on the North Shore. Two of my own kids went through the Sentinel High School band programme with Mr. Mike Toth and it was a tremendously enriching experience. It gave them with a deeper appreciation of music, they formed strong friendships which are still very active today, did lots of community service like playing at local festivals and had a lot of fun. Furthermore, both of them seriously considered music as careers. The eldest applied to the UBC Music Programme but realised she didn’t have enough of what it takes. The younger one went to Cap College, got his Jazz degree and hopes to start his Masters in a year or so. I consider that the real strength of the electives like music, art, filming etc. is not that kids are going to make it a career but that it encourages an interest and helps a young person gain some level of skill which goes on through life with them. My daughter, wisely, decided not to follow music as a career, but I fully expect to see her, aged 35 or 40, in some brass band or community orchestra fulfilling a need in herself, providing entertainment for others and having a lot of fun. It doesn’t make money, but it is part of the total education of people. Thank you again.
