From gridiron to mic, Bobby Hebert captivates the WHO DAT Nation

Don’t ever give up One hot day, a thirsty crow flew all over the fields looking for water. For a long time, he could not find any. He felt very weak, almost lost all hope.

Suddenly, he saw a water jug below the tree. He flew straight down to see if there was any water inside. Yes, he could see some water inside the jug!

The crow tried to push his head into the jug. Sadly, he found that the neck of the jug was too narrow. Then he tried to push the jug to tilt for the water to flow out but the jug was too heavy.

The crow thought hard for a while.

Then looking around it, he saw some pebbles. he suddenly had a good idea. he started picking up the pebbles one by one, dropping each into the jug. As more and more pebbles filled the jug, the water level kept rising. Soon it was high enough for the crow to drink.

Do your weights workout first A tomato every other day, keeps the doctor away

Experts say weight training should be done first because it’s a higher intensity exercise compared to cardio. Your body is better able to handle weight training early in the workout because you’re fresh and you have the energy you need to work it. Conversely, cardiovascular exercise should be the last thing you do at the gym because it helps your body recover by increasing blood flow to the muscles, and flushing out lactic acid, which builds up in the muscles while you’re weight training. It’s the lactic acid that makes your muscles feel stiff and sore. The added benefit of doing cardio last is that you use up most of your glucose and glycogen. This is the energy stored in your blood and muscles. Once you body uses these two fuel sources It has to turn to stored body fat for energy. Weights before cardio equal a flatter stomach.

Tomato is a superstar in the fruit and vegetable pantheon. Tomatoes contain lycopene, a powerful cancer fighter.

They’re also rich in vitamin C. The good news is that cooked tomatoes are also nutritious, so use them in pasta, soups, and casseroles, as well as in salads.

The British Thoracic Society says that tomatoes and apples can reduce your risk of asthma and chronic lung diseases.

Both contain the antioxidant quercetin.

To enjoy these benefits, eat five apples a week or a tomato every other day.

Warning signs of thirst and heavy sweating “Heavy sweating is a sign that your body is producing a lot of heat,” says Bergeron, which could lead to heat exhaustion in adverse conditions. In fact, heat is more dangerous on humid days, because sweat can’t evaporate off the skin—which normally produces a cooling sensation—as easily

as it can with dry or breezy weather.

Feeling thirsty is also a sign that your body needs more water.

Even if you don’t feel parched, it’s important to sip water frequently on hot days. If you’re out in the heat for more than an hour, a sports drink can also help replenish lost water.

Brush up on hygiene Many people don’t know how to brush their teeth properly. Improper brushing can cause as much damage to the teeth and gums as not brushing at all. Lots of people don’t brush for long enough, don’t floss and don’t see a dentist regularly. Hold your toothbrush in the same way that would hold a pencil, and brush for at least two minutes.

This includes brushing the teeth, the junction of the teeth and gums, the tongue and the roof of the mouth. And you don’t need a fancy, angled toothbrush – just a sturdy, soft-bristled one that you replace each month.

I did a little research1 about green living before I wrote this article, and here are some tips I discovered: • For each degree that you raise the temperature of your air conditioner, you can save about 3-4 percent on cooling costs.

Superfoods for Diabetes, a Series The beetroot is the taproot portion of the beet plant, commonly referred to as the beet, table beet, garden beet, red beet, or golden beet.

Beets have a deep history dating back over 4,000 years and found in the Mediterranean region. It is said that they were transported to Babylon and by the 9th century AD they were commonly found Chinese cuisine. The beet belongs to the Chenopodiaceous family.

The Beet So what’s so SUPER about Beets?

Beets are considered a superfood because they have such a wide range of health benefits. There dynamic make up includes vitamins, minerals, and organic compounds like carotenoids, lutein/ zeaxanthin, glycine, betaine, dietary fiber, vitamin C, magnesium, iron, copper and phosphorus, and anthocyanins. They are very low in calories, with no cholesterol. Diabetics must use caution because they do have the highest sugar content of all vegetables.

Health Benefits of Beets

This superfood can be added to salads, soups, or even pickled.

Beets have also been used as a substitute for cane sugar.

With their beautiful deep red/purple color they are frequently used to dress up a dish.

How to buy: Beets should be purchased when firm and the greens attached. (Note the greens are edible). They will last up to a week in the refrigerator.

How to prepare: When you are ready to cook them wash them thoroughly to remove any dirt. Roasting is one of the easiest ways to cook beets. This will also bring out the natural sweetness. Remove all but an inch of the stem. Place them in a baking pan with a small amount of water to cover the bottom. Cover the pan with aluminum foil and roast at 400-450 degrees. Once beets are cooled the skin will be easy to peel. Slice or cube the beets and add them to your salad, or have by themselves with olive oil and goat cheese.

This is the third Anna Quindlen novel I’ve personally read, and I’m always reluctant to begin after reading the introductory blurb.

Her novels aren’t exciting; are characters aren’t wildly dysfunctional. What’s the hook? For me, it’s a strong, realistic plot that includes interesting, smart, grounded characters. It’s relationships that are developed and examined. Between the Wines was less than enthusiastic about this one, but for me… Anna Quindlen is becoming one of my favorite authors.

Mimi Miller watches the people around her, and she learns more and more by simply listening and going unobserved. Mimi describes her town as “a place where it is just as easy to feel lost as to feel content.” Once Mimi discovers that her town is on the verge of destruction, she has to decide how she’s going to handle her information, and if it’s going to hurt more people than it will help.

Quindlen does an excellent job at developing characters that arouse empathy in the reader. I can feel the time ticking away for this sleepy town’s inhabitants as the town is slowly being brought to obsolescence by floodwaters. It’s not fast-paced, but the complex characters will stay with you.

Anna Quindlen is one of those gifted writers who can take the ordinary and transform it into the extraordinary.

The novel starts slowly, but will creep up on you. If, like me, you were a child on the 1960s, you will particularly enjoy the references.

Many of us shy away from the phrase, “I am my mother’s daughter,” but oh, how it sometimes applies! This matter-of-fact reminiscence by a strong, independent woman is one of those remarkable examples. I loved it!

a little unusually as a bookclub choice. Between the Wines is group of retired English teachers and librarians. We have a strong appreciation for adolescent and children’s literature. Plus, we’re grandmothers!! The movie based on Roald Dahl’s piece is in theaters now, so it seemed like a great time to reread this story, and then plan a trip to the movies!

What is the point of this novel? Stay in the same place your entire life and that will make you a better person?

The “liquid biopsy” for a cancer diagnosis It has been known since 1948 that cellular building blocks or nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) can be found circulating in the blood stream. Only recently has circulating cell–free DNA been able to identify cancers. This obtained through a blood sample. It has been called both “blood biopsy” and “liquid biopsy” Small strands of nucleic acids break off from a chromosome. These can now be “extracted” and, at times, identifi identified ed as malignancies. Through advanced techniques, multiple cancer cell types have been found. But wouldn’t be incredible to be able to take a yearly blood test to determine whether or not one had a pre-malignant condition or an early cancer?

In time, “blood biopsies “will be able to provide faster, cheaper and less invasive ways to assess a cancer patient’s status as well as response to treatment. It may well be that the greater volume of DNA obtained from a liquid biopsy, will predict the massiveness of the cancer and perhaps the prognosis.

This may be an incredible step into the future of cancer management. As Sir Winston Churchill said, “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”

Vaccines for the Golden Years What is the purpose of vaccines? Vaccines help our immune system get a “boost” as we age.

Just as our brain memories may get weak as we age, our “immune memory” also fades over time. Vaccines help our immune system recognize “bad bugs” like pneumonia, flu and shingles.

One may ask, what vaccines do I need?

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends vaccine based upon risk and age.

Let’s walk through a few. For those 65 years and older, both pneumonia vaccines are indicated. Which are those? There is the prevnar-13 that has 13 different streptococcus pneumonia types and the pneumovax that has

23 of those. Well, what’s the difference? The prevnar-13 promotes a more robust immune response, and the pneumovax provides more serotypes. The pneumonia vaccine is indicated for those 19 years old and older, for those who smoke and have asthma, HIV infection, chronic renal failure, malignancy such as lymphoma, solid organ transplant recipients, chronic steroid or radiation therapy, and those without a spleen.

For those 65 years and older, one dose of the prevnar-13 vaccine is indicated, and then 6-12 months later, the pneumovax 23 is indicated to be given as a one-time dose.

In September, the flu season will be kicked off. It is important to receive the flu vaccine every year. Each year, the flu vaccine is different. The Asian flu season occurs before ours in the United States, and therefore, the prediction is made of which flu strains to include in the vaccine. The flu vaccine in the injection or shot form is a killed, inactivated form. Therefore, it cannot give one the flu.

Any vaccine can make one feel malaise or “under the weather” from stimulating the immune system. No vaccine is 100% effective; however, if vaccinated against the flu, and the flu infects that person, the disease will be milder than without vaccination. The flu vaccine is deadly and kills thousands every year.

Shingles can be debilitating. There is a vaccine that is a live-virus vaccine to be obtained at age 60 years and older. The CDC does not recommend this be given prior to 60 years old due to how the effectiveness was studied. Shingles can manifest as headache, light sensitivity,

malaise, fever, and abnormal skin sensation and pain. The rash is usually on one side and is in the distribution of your nerves along that part of your skin. It most commonly involves your neck, torso and eye. The rash may resolve in two to four weeks. It does look similar to chicken pox. Transmission is usually from direct contact with zoster lesions, although it can be airborne. The complication of shingles includes postherpetic neuralgia, or nerve pain, after the resolution. The postherpetic neuralgia may last weeks to months after the rash is gone. Other times, years. Risk factors include age of 50 years or older, severe pain after the onset of rash or before the rash appears, and rash on the face and eye area. The vaccine can decrease the incidence by 51%, decrease complications by 67%, and decreases severity by 61%. You can receive this vaccine at the same time as pneumonia and flu vaccines.

For anyone that is around small children or babies, getting the Tdap vaccine is a good idea. This vaccine has Tetanus, Diptheria, and Acellular pertussis. A one-time dose is needed to prevent risk. If babies catch pertussis from an adult, they stop breathing. They don’t have the typical cough one may think of with pertussis.

Getting vaccinated is not only beneficial on an individual level, but it is also has a greater community impact that can be lifesaving. We can protect those with immune deficiency or may be immunocompromised from cancer treatments or other conditions. It is our responsibility to our neighbors to promote wellness and protect those whom cannot protect themselves.

Sometimes, and for various reasons, as we age our physical hearing may decline or it may get more sensitive. I’m always telling younger folks to protect their ears so they can still enjoy their music when they are my age. On a related note: as we get older, our spiritual hearing may decline or get more sensitive. There are those who let the cares and troubles of this world dull their spiritual senses and they become cynical or even bitter towards the things of God. On the other hand, some people become more sensitive to spiritual truths and seem to find greater clarity as they mature. Experience has taught them how to discern that inaudible voice of God even when life gets really noisy! They do this by setting aside a time each day to read God’s Word, to speak to God in prayer, and then taking just a little extra time to listen. Don’t neglect your spiritual ears; they may be more important than you think.

Bobby Hebert, The Cajun Cannon From Gridiron to Mic article by Mary Bounds, BSN, RN photographs by Bach Imagery, LLC His name is pronounced “Ay-bare,” but he’s better known in the sports world as the “Cajun Cannon.” New Orleans’ legendary NFL quarterback and acclaimed radio sportscaster, Bobby Hebert is an undeniable favorite with the hometown throng. The Superdome came alive in 1987, as the “Cajun Cannon’s” NFL career unfolded, leading the New Orleans Saints to their first winning season and a long awaited trip to the play-offs. Moving back from Atlanta in 2005, Hebert rekindled his connections with Louisiana fans, captivating WWL radio audiences with his spot-on sports broadcasting, punctuated with his passion and signature Cajun accent.

Whether they hail from the bayous of South LaFourche or the riverbanks of Saint Bernard, Bobby Hebert’s devoted fans wholeheartedly support him. “Bobby’s our guy.” “He tells it like it is.” “Bobby’s one of us!”

Hebert earned the people’s respect as a hero on the field then won their trust on the airwaves by “telling it like it is” regardless of the consequences. The audience can’t get enough of Hebert’s boundary-pushing dialogue or his authentic Cajun flair. In truth, folks from south Louisiana identify with Hebert in a down-home personal way; He’s the “Cajun Cannon,” back on his home turf, right where he belongs.

Bobby Joseph Hebert, Jr. was born on August 19, 1960 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the first child of Bobby and Paula Hebert.

Known as “Bobby J” to his family and friends, Hebert played football since he was a child but never dreamed he’d play for the New Orleans Saints. In fact, it wasn’t until his senior year in high school when Hebert was shifted from safety to quarterback that his strong passing arm received recognition. After leading South LaFourche High School to a thrilling State Championship title in 1977, the “Cajun Cannon” officially emerged and never looked back.

By the end of his football career at Northwestern State University, Hebert joined the newly formed United States Football League (USFL) citing financial reasons. “I had a wife and child to support. I had to take the assured income instead of waiting to see what might happen in the NFL.” Winning the first USFL Championship as quarterback for the Michigan Panthers, Hebert was named the championship game’s Most Valuable Player.

In addition, he holds the league’s all time passing record with 10,039 career passing yards. In the fall of 1985, when the USFL officially dismantled, Hebert finally turned his sights to the NFL. It looked like the “Cajun Cannon” might actually become a Seattle Seahawk, that is until some good ol’ Louisiana politics got involved. Truthfully, Hebert was surprised by the unexpected turn of events which started with a phone call from Baton Rouge. “My wife told me the governor was calling me, and all I could think of was, ‘What do you say to a governor?’ ”

Louisiana governor, Edwin Edwards, phoned Hebert to talk about a possible future with the Saints, telling the quarterback, “You don’t need to go to Seattle. There’s no Cajuns up there!”

Edwards also contacted the Saints new owner, Tom Benson, to discuss the talented “Cajun Cannon.” The rest as they say is history, as Hebert signed with the Saints leading them to an era of success they had not seen before. In 1992, at the time Hebert left the Saints, he was the most successful quarterback in franchise history, boasting a 49-27 record as a starter with 85 touchdowns and 14,630 yards. Hebert was later inducted to the Saints Hall of Fame in 1999, and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.

After four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, Hebert retired from football in 1996 and promptly became a radio commentator for Falcons’ post game shows. With his talkative, off-the-cuff personality and vast knowledge of the game, Hebert was an instant hit behind the microphone. What’s more, he enjoyed his new career in talk-radio, especially his interaction with the fans. “I like to view myself as more of a conversationalist than a journalist,” Hebert explains. “Like more of a voice of the fans.”

Then in 2005, New Orleans sadly said good-bye to Buddy Diliberto their celebrated sportscaster and host of WWL radio’s “Sport’s Talk.” Hebert had on occasion worked with Diliberto at WWL and had proven his uncanny ability to connect with the fans. In the wake of Buddy D’s passing, Hebert got the official nod from WWL and accepted the full time position with “Sport’s

Talk” in New Orleans. The “Cajun Cannon” was moving home, and he and his fans were elated!

Once back in the Big Easy, Hebert joined co-host Kenny Wilkerson, bringing the daily buzz on sports to WWL radio.

Alas, only months later New Orleans suffered a tragic blow from Hurricane Katrina. Lives were forever altered as people and teams were displaced. Following Katrina’s wrath, “Sports Talk” provided fans a much needed diversion from their everyday lives. Hebert brought his best to the mic, keeping the audience informed on LSU and the Saints. He was also dubbed the founding father of the “Who-Dat Nation.” During the post game show on Dec. 10, 2006 (after the Saints crushed the Dallas Cowboys!) displaced fans were calling in from several different states, and Hebert exclaimed, “Man, there’s a whole ‘Who-Dat Nation’ out there!” Remarkably, the term gained international recognition, uniting fans across the globe who are cheering for the Saints.

If he hadn’t already won over with the fans, Hebert sealed the deal on January 31, 2010, as the Saints prepared for their first Super Bowl. Buddy D had vowed to march down the street in a dress if the Saints ever made it to the big game, and “Bobby J” planned to honor that pledge! Thousands of men wearing dresses joined Hebert as he paraded to the French Quarter donned in a dress. Incredibly, an estimated 87,000 people attended the fun-filled event, but no one enjoyed it more than Bobby Hebert!

The Louisiana heat can be really intense during the summer. It affects humans, and your fourlegged friends too!

Dogs are vulnerable to a few injuries and illnesses, like sunburns, footpad burns, and heat strokes because of the hot weather. That is due to the fact that dogs do not sweat, they pant instead. And this useful skill has limitations: it cannot cool a dog down completely. That implicates that a dog’s body temperature can rise quickly, going from 100-102.5 degrees, which is normal, to over 106 degrees, which is deadly. If that happens, you need to contact a veterinarian immediately, your dog could have a heat stroke.

A heat stroke is an illness caused by the failure of the body’s temperature-regulating mechanism.

Its symptoms are rapid panting, reddened gums and tongue, excessive saliva, and a rapid heart rate. If untreated, it can lead to seizures, and your dog can collapse. Death is a possible outcome too.

But there are ways to prevent it!

The most common cause of heat strokes is letting your dog stay in the car. Even for a short period of time and parked in the shade, your car can reach oven-like temperatures and be deadly for any being.

Some people may recommend shaving down your dog so he does not get too hot, however do

not shave close to the skin, otherwise he might get sunburned.

Another tip is to keep your walks small, so your pet does not get exposed to the heat for too long.

You should also keep exercise to a minimum.

The ground temperature can also get too hot for their paws, so you should test the pavement before walking your dog: put the back of your hand on the ground, and if you can keep it there for more than 5 seconds, it is ok to walk your dog. If not, walking in the grass is always the best option.

Furthermore, you should not muzzle your dog, as it prevents them from panting, thus getting the body temperature up.

COAST completes another year of service The St. Tammany Council on Aging, referred to by many as COAST, ended their most recent fiscal year on a high note, providing 7943 more units of service than the previous year. A unit of service ranges from an hour of housekeeping to an hour of exercise to a bus trip to the grocery.

Of the 25 services offered by COAST, transportation is one of the most requested.

Since October 1, COAST has operated the STAR Transit program for St. Tammany Parish Government. While any member of the public can ride the demand response system, COAST is proud to report that the system completed 4013 more rides for seniors in fiscal year 2016 than in fiscal year 2015.

“It’s been an exciting year,” said COAST Executive Director Julie Agan. “In addition to increasing the units of service, we were also able to add some new services, such as the home repair program and the SAIL exercise classes.”

The home repair program provides labor and materials for small do-it-yourself jobs that some seniors are unable to handle alone.

From installing grab bars in bathrooms to replacing light bulbs in ceiling fans, the home repair program provided 55.5 hours of service to 16 seniors during its first six months.

COAST plans to double that number during the current fiscal year.

Also new this year was the addition of the Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) exercise class. Offered at the Slidell and Lacombe Senior Centers, the class is so popular there is a waiting list. Participants have seen their mobility and strength improve through attending the three times weekly classes.

“We are very pleased with the amount of service we were able to provide this year. I am so proud of our staff. They put in a tremendous amount of hard work to make sure our seniors receive the help they need to remain independent and living in their own homes,” said Agan.

Easy Greek Barley Salad INGREDIENTS 1 3 1 ³ 2 2 ½ ¼ ¼ 2 1

cup pearl or whole grain barley cups water cup olive oil Tbsp. fresh lemon juice Tbsp. red wine vinegar tsp. dried oregano cup finely chopped onion cup finely chopped fresh parsley medium tomatoes, chopped small green or red bell pepper, chopped ½ cup crumbled feta

PREPARATION 1. In medium saucepan with lid bring water and 1 teaspoon salt to a boil.

2. Add barley and return to boil.

Reduce heat to low, cover and cook 45 minutes or until barley is tender and liquid is absorbed. If using whole grain barley, increase cooking time to 50-55 minutes and pour off any unabsorbed liquid after cooking. 3. Combine olive oil, lemon juice, vinegar, oregano and 1/4 teaspoon salt; pour over hot cooked barley. Cool to room temperature.

4. Gently stir in onions, parsley, tomatoes, bell pepper and feta cheese. Serve chilled or at room temperature. Makes 6 servings. National Barley Foods Council.

Zucchini Noodles with Grilled Shrimp & Lemon Basil Dressing INGREDIENTS Lemon Basil Dressing: 2 cups basil, stems removed (packed) 2 garlic cloves, roughly chopped 1 shallot, roughly chopped ¼ tsp. red pepper flakes ½ cup olive oil, plus more as needed 1 Tbsp. red wine vinegar 1 lemon, zested Zucchini Noodles and Grilled Shrimp: 1 pound shrimp (26–30 count, peeled and de-veined) 5 medium-sized zucchinis Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper ½ cup halved cherry tomatoes PREPARATION 1. In a blender combine basil, garlic, shallot, red pepper flakes, ½ cup olive oil, red wine vinegar & lemon zest. Pulse on medium until evenly smooth. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.

2. Place the remaining almonds in a small skillet over medium high heat to toast. Shake pan every few seconds, until the almonds are golden brown. Remove almonds from heat and set aside.

Heat one Tbsp of olive oil over medium high heat. 3. Add shrimp and season with salt and pepper. Cook shrimp for 6–8 minutes until fully cooked and pink, and add two heaping spoonfuls of the lemon basil dressing into shrimp and toss to combine. Transfer seasoned shrimp to a clean bowl and set aside.

4. Using a mandolin or vegetable spiralizer, cut zucchini into thin spaghetti shaped noodles. Add zucchini noodles to the same pan used for the shrimp and sauté for 1–2 minutes over medium heat until just tender. Season the zucchini noodles with salt and pepper and then toss with an additional two heaping spoonfuls of the lemon basil dressing. 5. Turn heat off. Reserve any extra lemon basil dressing for another use. 6. Toss seasoned shrimp with the

zucchini noodles and cherry tomatoes. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Top with the toasted sliced almonds. Serve immediately. by What’s Gabby Cooking
