8 Steps to Start a Relationship with God
iar with a passage, try to read it like you’ve never seen it before—don’t skim. God might give you an understanding of something you’ve never noticed before.
1. Schedule a devotional “appointment.” Write a specific time and location on your calendar, 6. Don’t just read the Bible—do what it says (James 1:22). Make a list of personal traits or in your planner. (patience, kindness) or spiritual goals (witness2. Choose your tools. Some basics tools include ing, prayer) you’d like to work on. On a piece of paper, and understand what you’re about to read. write these words: “I commit to read my Bi4. Use your Bible. Even if you use a devotional book with verses printed in it, read the passages in your Bible anyway. 5. Read it until you get it. First, read verse by verse—read each verse several times until you understand what it is saying, then move on to the next one. Then, go back and read the entire passage, putting its meaning together in your mind. Even if you’re famil-

8. Don’t give up. Let’s face it: There will be days when you skip devotions. Just try to keep it a high priority and do it whenever you can. God is not going to abandon you if you don’t do a devotion one day—he knows what your schedule is like, and he knows your hearts.

Notes & News April 2016
A Short Burst of Lose Weight Sun for Vitamin D with Water Sunlight spurs the body to make vitamin D. But because of the skin-cancer risk, there isn’t an official recommendation to catch some rays. However, a small amount of sun exposure without sunscreen can do the trick. “If you’re going to get it from the sun, about 20 to 25 minutes of exposure is helpful,” says Stephen Honig, MD, director of the Osteoporosis Center at the Hospital for Joint Diseases, in New York City. The sun is less likely to provide your daily needs at higher latitudes, in the winter, or if you’re older or dark skinned (skin pigment blocks light and the process is less efficient with age). And FYI: Light through a window won’t work.
Forget diet pills and cleanses. A new study suggests that an effective weight-loss aid is available straight from your kitchen sink. “As part of a prudent, low-calorie weight-loss diet, adding water may help with weight-loss success,” says Brenda Davy, Ph.D., the lead author of the study and an associate professor of nutrition at Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg. Though small, Davy’s study is the first randomized
Standing vs Sitting at work More than a dozen studies conducted over the past decade suggest that too much sitting leads to more disability as we age, doubles the risk of diabetes and heart disease, and could even shorten our lifespan. For example, Harvard researchers found in a February study involving more than 92,000 women that the more time participants spent sitting at work, driving, or watching TV, the greater their risk of dying from heart disease, cancer, or strokes.
A May study of nearly 17,000 Canadian adults found that those who reported the most time standing had a 33 percent lower risk of dying from any cause over 12 years compared to those who stood the least. But those who exercised, at least, two hours each week — even if they sat the rest of the time — enjoyed the same life-extending benefits as those who stood the most. The Harvard researchers, on the other hand, found in their study that regular exercise didn’t erase the increased death risk associated with prolonged sitting.
Does a man go through menopause? Yes, a man goes through menopause, but to a different extent than a woman. Menopause is a term used to describe the end of a woman’s fertility. It literally means the end of menstruation. On the other hand, subtle changes in the function of the testes may occur as early as 45-50 years of age, and more

controlled trial to examine the benefits of “preloading” with water before meals. The study included 48 overweight or obese men and women between the ages of 55 and 75 who were on a low-calorie diet (1,200 calories per day for women and 1,500 calories per day for men). Half of the people were instructed to drink 16 ounces of water -- the amount in a small bottle of spring water before meals. After three months, the participants who drank water had lost an average of about 15.5 pounds, compared with just 11 pounds in the control group, according to the study, the first results of which were published earlier this year in the journal Obesity.
dramatically after the age of 70. Because men do not go through a distinct male menopause period, some doctors refer to this as the androgen (testosterone) deficiency in the aging male (ADAM). Men typically experience a decline in testosterone production due to aging, but it can also be related to some diseases like diabetes.
Whether warning function of the testicles contributes to such symptoms as fatigue, weakness, depression, decreased sexual desire, or impotence remains uncertain. If testosterone levels are low, replacing that hormone may help relieve them. However, replacing male hormones can worsen prostate cancer and high cholesterol levels. Talk to your doctor to see if hormone treatment is right for you.

CANCER
"You Have Nothing to Lose."
Oncology Consulting Services, LLC S. Terry Kraus, M.D.
I disagree. There was definitely something to lose. Jan’s life “would be turned upside down for 6 months. She and John would have to rearrange their work schedules and find childcare for her treatment days”.
Lee Newcomer recently wrote a most provocative article in the Journal of Clinical Oncology (May 10, 2015). A friend of his, “John”, was perplexed by the treatment recommendations for his wife, “Jan”. The recommendation was for chemotherapy after surgery as well as radiation to follow. Both of them did Internet research. They both agreed that the radiation should be undertaken; however, they had questions as to whether or not the chemotherapy was required. They received a second opinion from a major cancer center. The consulting physician explained to them that chemotherapy would provide some benefit. However, the doctor also told them “you have nothing to lose”.
About the author: Dr. Kraus has treated over 16,000 patients in the past 40 years. He finds caring for his “cancer family” both a privilege and calling, and he continues to use his vast knowledge and expertise to provide information and guidance to patients.
COMPLICATIONS OF CHEMOTHERAPY CAN OCCUR.
Jan’s risk of death is small, but not nonexistent (2 per 1000 patients). But the chance of having an emergency room visit is 75% and 13% chance of hospitalization.
If you are concerned about your particular cancer diagnosis or treatment, I can help. Please call me at (504) 717-3237. The opinions voiced in this material are for general information only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual.
WOULD I HAVE RECOMMENDED CHEMOTHERAPY AS WELL AS RADIATION TO JAN?
Yes, I would. But I would also make sure that Jan and John were aware of all of the risks and all of the benefits of chemotherapy and radiation. Physicians must be aware that all recommendations of treatment need to be weighed on a risk/benefit basis. The only way Jan and John could make a rational decision regarding cancer therapy would be by knowing all of the facts.

Nutrition April 2016
Benefits of Strawberries
Whether fresh or frozen, this time of year strawberries are a popular fruit. This little super fruit has a healthy benefit as well. Strawberries are naturally low calorie, (approximately 28 kCal per serving). They are fat-free and low in both sodium and sugar. Strawberries do contain natural sugar, however, total sugars are fairly low with 4 grams per serving. The total carbohydrate content is less than a half slice of bread. With a serving of 1.5 cups and you’ll have a filling and nutritious snack that’s less than 100 calories. One cup of strawberries contain 3 Grams of fiber per serving, this helps in proper digestion and helping you feel satisfied longer. This low calorie, low sugar fruit can assist with cravings on a low calorie diet, to aid in weight loss. This juicy summery fruit is also packed with vital antioxidants like Vitamin C. One serving of strawberries contains approximately 51.5 mg of vitamin C—about half of your daily requirement. Vitamin C is a well-known immunity booster, as well as a powerful, fast-working antioxidant.
There are many benefits to the antioxidant power of Vitamin C, including: • Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can aid in cancer prevention, since a healthy immune system is the body’s best defense against disease. • The antioxidant properties in strawberries may also help to prevent cataracts (the clouding over of the eye lens) which can cause loss of vision. • The production of collagen, which helps to improve skin’s elasticity and resilience. Since we lose collagen as we age, eating foods rich in vitamin C may result in healthier, younger-looking skin. Some other key nutrients in this bountiful berry are, folate and potassium. Folate is a B-vitamin and strawberries are a good source with 21 mcg per serving. B Vitamin help with fighting anemia. and high blood pressure. Potassium another heart healthy nutrient, and with 134 mg per serving, strawberries are considered a good source as well.
A “berry” interesting fact on the strawberry... The strawberry was first cultivated in ancient Rome, and in France they were regarded as an aphrodisiac. No wonder the strawberry is one of the most popular fruits in the world! These little red berries can be good for your heart in more ways than one.

Focus on Peripheral Artery Disease
April 2016
Peripheral Artery Disease Cramping Your Style? by Vasanth K. Bethala, MD According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), peripheral artery disease (PAD) affects approximately 8 million people in the United States, with 12-20% of those individuals over the age of 60. PAD is a common circulatory condition caused when plaque (fat, cholesterol, calcium, fibrous tissues and other substances) builds up in the arteries that carry blood to your body. Over time the buildup of plaque in your arteries can harden and narrow, which restricts the movement of oxygen-rich blood to the body. PAD usually affects the arteries in the legs, although it also can affect the arteries that transport blood from your heart to your head, arms, kidneys, and stomach. Numerous factors increase your risk for developing PAD, such as smoking; diabetes; obesity; high blood pressure; high blood cholesterol; increasing age; and a family history of PAD, heart disease or stroke. Peripheral artery disease can often go unnoticed because the individual is experiencing minor or no symptoms. The main symptom of PAD is known as intermittent claudication: pain, numbness, aching, heaviness or cramping in the buttocks, thighs, calves and feet. Intermittent claudication fades after rest and is caused by activity such as walking or climbing stairs. Your muscles need more oxygen-rich blood when you are performing physical activity, and if they are being deprived of it, symptoms will arise. Intermittent claudication is often mistaken as an inevitable sign of aging in older adults. Other symptoms of PAD include weak or no pulse in the legs or feet; sores on the toes, feet or legs that do not heal or heal slowly; pale or bluish color of the skin; coldness in one leg compared to the other leg; decreased or no hair growth; and poor nail growth. Although PAD is serious, it is treatable. Lifestyle changes, medications and surgery are options for treating PAD. Your doctor or healthcare provider may prescribe medications to prevent blood clots from forming, treat unhealthy cholesterol levels, treat high blood pressure, help ease leg pain, and reduce intermittent claudication. In some cases, an angioplasty, bypass surgery or thrombolytic therapy may be performed. If PAD is left untreated, serious complications can arise: blood clots that block small arteries, coronary artery disease, impotence, open sores on the lower legs, tissue death (gangrene), and amputation. Vasanth K. Bethala, MD Medical Director, SMH Cardiology Services FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE VISIT THE SMH WEBSITE:
SlidellMemorial.org
Lifestyle changes can help! These four simple tips can help decrease your risk of developing PAD. Also, these same healthy practices can help someone who has already developed PAD get on the road to recovery. STOP SMOKING
EAT A HEART-HEALTHY DIET
Chemicals in tobacco smoke harm your blood cells and can damage function of your heart and blood vessels, with plaque build up in the arteries.
Watch what you eat by controlling portion sizes, eating more fruits and vegetables, selecting whole grains, and limiting saturated fats and trans fats when you can.
EXERCISE REGULARLY
TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET
Exercise increases oxygen in the blood and contributes to better overall blood flow, helping your body to flus out plaque and toxins in the cardiovascular system.
Massage or physical therapy can also increase oxygen in the blood and contributes to better overall blood flow, helping your body to flus out plaque and toxins in the cardiovascular system.

our body. What may not be so obvious and may be overlooked is the impact our attitude has on our physical well-being. One such attitude to consider is that of anger. Did you know various studies have shown that being a consistently angry person may double your chance of a heart attack, increases stroke risk, weakens your immune system, causes anxiety, can lead to depression and may even lessen lung capacity? That’s information we should not ignore. I believe this is one of the reasons the Bible gives clear warnings concerning anger. Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:26… “In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.”
James puts it this way in James 4:19-20… As we mature we naturally turn our attention to our physical health. One reason is that “My dear brothers and sisters, take note our body begins to speak to us in ways we of this: Everyone should be quick to never heard before! Yes, we may hear from listen, slow to speak and slow to beour back, our knees, our feet, our eyes, and come angry, 20 because human anger you get the picture. We begin to think about does not produce the righteousness what effect this or that activity will have on that God desires.”
Pg. 14
As we mature in life, most of us have a strong desire to remain independent as long as humanly possible! This desire motivates our plans for the retirement years as we think about financial inSo the next time you’re tempted to get angry dependence, housing independence, and health independence! and angry, yougoals notwith only stand There stay is nothing wrongremember, with pursuing these a passion! Planning Ahead
for Caregiving Starts with a List
MANY OF US ARE CURRENTLY ASSISTING WITH THE CARE
of an aging parent. For some it is a gradual decline in health that initiates the caregiving and for others it is an acute crisis that requires an immediate response. People plan vacations and weddings but don’t often think about planning for medical emergencies. Medical pre-planning is important for our senior population and for those of us who may be thrust into the role of caregiver. The caregiving of an older relative may evolve as a gradual process or it may begin at the onset of an acute emergency such as a heart attack, stroke, or an accident. I had not done any medical pre-planning when I received a phone call from my mother in March of 2013. She was living in Florida and I was in Louisiana. Ten seconds into a bizarre conversation I asked my mother if she could call 911. She responded, “I don’t know what that is.” My independent and highly intelligent mother had experienced a stroke. I called 911 and learned that calling 911 in Louisiana cannot send an ambulance to an address in Florida. Two additional phone calls were needed to get an ambulance to her home. With that done, I wanted to contact a neighbor to go and stay with my mother until the ambulance arrived. Did I have phone numbers?? YES! I remembered that I had a list of phone numbers that Mom asked me to program into her cell phone many years earlier! The next call I made was to the hospital. The nurse asked if my mother was taking any medications. She was, however, I did not know the names or dosages of her medications. Her doctors’ names? I could not recall that either. I felt terrible. That March I unexpectantly became a caregiver and medical advocate for my mother. Fortunately, she had begun “organizing her aging
Pg. 16
documents” after my father’s death 2 years earlier. She had the big pieces in place. She had her Will, Power of Attorney, and Living Will all set and I had copies. These documents were very helpful and assisted greatly in my new role as caregiver. Mom was facing rehabilitation challenges while I was working to learn about her stroke, educate myself in regard to her medical insurance, and make sure she received the best possible care. The stroke caused impairments to her speech, reading, writing, memory and understanding. She was in the hospital for several days and then transferred to an acute rehabilitation hospital. Due to Medicare “guidelines” she was sent home after two weeks and would continue therapy in her home. My sister and I took turns living with my mother for the next 6 months. Initially we took over all the necessary decisions and day to day functions. We supported her and cheered as she began to recover and work toward regaining her independence. Hoping to help others be prepared in the case of a medical emergency, I created a list of important items, as well as several of the less important items, that we needed to address while my mother was recovering. While compiling the list on the following page, I spoke with others who have aging parents or who are currently in a caregiving roll. In some cases the parents initiated the discussion and shared their list of information with their adult children. These parents provided a folder containing important medical, financial, and legal information. Having medical information before a health issue arises will save time and can assist doctors with the immediate critical care of a relative. The additional information in the list would be helpful for anyone who may become a future caregiver. There are many decisions made during the caregiving process and having information before it is needed will make it easier.

Book Club Corner April 2016
Liz Maddox:
In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day this month, the Between the Wines bookclub read Colm Toibin’s Brooklyn. Last year we read Toibin’s Nora Webster, and on an interesting note, characters from Nora Webster make appearances in Brooklyn and that 1950s Enniscorthy, Ireland is the setting for many of Toibin’s novels. Note: Callie’s Book Club also kept the Irish theme by reading In the Woods by Tana French.
This month's selection: Brooklyn by Colm Toibin
Between the Wines rating:
FOUR OUT OF FIVE STEMS
Next month's selection: The Round House by Louise Erdrich
Brooklyn is proof that a story doesn’t need huge dramatics to be epic. This is such a charmingly quiet story about a well-mannered Irish girl Elis Lacey who comes to Brooklyn as an immigrant for work. Seeing 1950s America through her enthusiastic eyes is spell binding because Colm Toibin is such a solid writer. Eilis crosses an ocean to make a new life for herself after realizing that there’s little work for her accounting skills in her small-town Ireland during the hard years following World War II. She’s sponsored by an Irish priest who finds her housing and a job in a department store. After a traumatic, but hilarious ocean voyage, we get to see how exciting and frightening it can be to immigrate to a new country. “As I settled down to sleep in that new bed in the dark city, I saw that it was too late now, too late for everything. I would not be given a second chance. In the hours when I woke, I have to tell you that this struck me almost with relief.”

When we think about becoming Americans, we assume everyone would want to be a part of this great country? This novel explores that complex and difficult decision, and we realize how heartbreaking leaving your homeland can be.
This was not my first Toibin book, and having ancestors who immigrated from Ireland, I especially enjoyed this sweet story. I thought it was well-written and poetic.
Pg. 20
Eilis’s homesickness and survival are very poignant. She discovers… “She was nobody here. It was not just that she had no friends and family; it was rather that she was a ghost in the room, in the streets on the way to work, on the shop floor. Nothing meant anything… She closed her eyes and tried to think of something to look forward to, but there was nothing. Not the slightest thing. Not even Sunday.” Brooklyn isn’t a sad novel though, it’s a triumph of spirit. Ellis meets a young Italian boy, and begins to make friends, and builds a life for herself. Then suddenly, Ireland demands her return. Brooklyn was also made into a beautiful movie that was nominated for Academy Awards in three categories: Best picture, best writing (adapted screenplay), and best female lead for Saoirse Ronan.
I nibbled at these pages in the way someone might nibble at a piece of candy hoping for a tasty center. But just as the flavor was intensifying, the author jerked the candy out of my mouth.
I felt like I was watching a beautiful picture being painted of life in mid-century Ireland and Brooklyn. I enjoyed the slow pace and the slice-of-life picture it painted.

A Legacy of Love The love story that brought Elisabeth Jones to Louisiana, and inspired her to share her love for animals with the community, through Good Dog Legacy, LLC.
article by Liz Maddox ∙ Photographs by Bach Imagery, LLC It began as a love story. They married in November of 2003. Elisabeth, a French citizen had been in the United States working as the Regional Linguistic Attache for the French government, and Charlton loved French wines and champagne. Elisabeth was missing French wines, and so a mutual friend had the idea to set these two up on a blind date. But Elisabeth didn’t do “blind dates” and Charlton really preferred red-heads. But over several bottles of Grand Crus, these two people fell deeply in love.
Pg. 23
Nicole Motichek, groomer and event planner for Good Dog Legacy, with Shadow. Previous Spread, left: Elisabeth and LoupLoup, her Royal Poubelle, (or Heintz 57 Royal Mutt). Previous Spread, right: Elisabeth and Rosie. Rosie and Shadow are Blue Merle Rough Collies.
And it was like a fairy tale. One of Elisabeth’s favorite memories was how Charlton procured two bottle of Madeira wine each from the year of his parents’ birth: 1905 and 1922. Charlton loved to cook, and he loved to pair wine. The couple moved to the Gulf Coast in Pass Christian into a beautiful home that had been his parents. This was the Butler McCucheon House that had belonged to Martha Washington, a house that had survived Camille in 1969, so in 2005, Charlton and Elisabeth stayed in the home to protect it during Hurricane Katrina.
Pg. 24
The home was one of the few on this stretch of the beach to remain standing. Charlton and Elisabeth seemed to survive unscathed as well. But as so many Katrina survivors soon learned, the scars were deep. Charlton was diagnosed with PTSD, and in 2013, he took his life. In his final letter to Elisabeth he wrote so many things, but ended it by asking her to always take care of their pups. This isn’t a sad story though; it’s a story of survival and of triumph. Elisabeth did take care of their three pups: Shadow and Rosie, both collies, and LoupLoup, a
Royal Poubelle, (which is French for what we would call a Heintz 57 Royal Mutt). And those dogs took care of Elisabeth. As pet ownership so often does, it gave her a reason to get up in the mornings; it gave her life purpose. These dogs were companions, and they reminded Elisabeth that life was short, and there was so much left to accomplish. So in July, 2015, Elisabeth Jones bought Good Dog Naturally from its previous owners as a tribute to Charlton’s first collie named Mitter as well as the three he loved so much. She opened it again; this time with a broader purpose. Good Dog Legacy is a full service dog emporium. Mel Borne who has been the manager through both ownerships says that this place is different than any other primarily because they will always, “take the time to talk to the customers to determine what’s best for their individual dog.” The previous owners Angela and Colleen were thrilled…” to see the store have a new life, but that it would continue the legacy of the past ten years.” Good Dog Legacy offers products, foods, and treats of so many varieties. Mel says that she follows one simple guideline when deciding which products to stock: “If we’re not comfortable giving something to our own dogs, we won’t sell it!”. Good Dog Legacy also offers grooming services, as well as tubs for owners to self bathe their canines. There is also boarding and doggie day care. Right now Good Dog Legacy has 18 suites. These aren’t your typical kennels, they are truly suites that resemble small barns, not cages at all! They have so many amenities such as decks for senior dogs to be able to navigate more easily. Cameras are being installed so pet owners can watch their dogs remotely. There’s a rotation schedule in place for the boarders and the day care residents so the dogs can play and rest, and generally just be dogs! Nicole Motichek, groomer and event planner for Good Dog Legacy, says partnering with the community is one of their most important goals. Whether it’s throwing handmade tug toys for dogs at the Mardi Paws parade or enlisting the Covington High art students to come paint the murals on the walls, Nicole wants to identify needs in the community and fill them. The newest plan on the horizon is to partner with local senior centers to offer Dog Days once a month. This would be a day that seniors could receive some canine education such as good joint supplements for their dogs or how to brush a coat properly. While their pups are having a spa day, their owners would participate in a luncheon discussing some mutual companion animal concerns.
“The possibilities of Good Dog Legacy are endless.” says Mel. “We’re all excited and trying to think out of the box. We want to identify needs in the community, and find a way to fill them.”
Mel Borne, who stayed on as manager of Good Dog Legacy after Elisabeth bought the company, gets a hug from Shadow. Mel and Elisabeth are excited to reach out to the local community, including programs that will share their love for animals with seniors.
Bragging is totally allowed. Yes, a vehicle will pick up and deliver any animals of seniors in retirement communities to give these animals the exercise they need to keep them fit and happy. Partnering with some local rescue and shelters is so important to Elisabeth and her crew at Good Dog Legacy. Presently they work with CARES, the St. Tammany Humane Society, Creole Poodles, and ARNO, but soon they will be kicking off a program called the Rescue Rodeo which will showcase shelter dogs to the community. This doesn’t just mean finding
homes, but instead socializing, training, and making good companion animals out of dogs that might have otherwise been euthanized. “The possibilities of Good Dog Legacy are endless.” says Mel. “We’re all excited and trying to think out of the box. We want to identify needs in the community, and find a way to fill them.” Good Dog Legacy is a legacy of love for Elisabeth Jones. It began with the love that she and Charlton had for each other and for their dogs, and now it’s grown into so many beautiful and amazing things.
Good Dog Legacy currently offers a wide range of healthy pet products for sale, pet grooming, dog training, boarding, and doggy day care.
