mighty eagles soaring in the skies. “Oh,” the eagle cried, “I wish I could soar like those birds.” The chickens roared with laughter, “You cannot soar with those birds. You are a chicken and chickens do not soar.” The eagle continued staring, at his real family up above, dreaming that he could be with them. Each time the eagle would let his dreams be known, he was told it couldn’t be done. That is what the eagle learned to believe. The eagle, after time, stopped dreaming and continued to live his life like a chicken. Finally, after a long life as a chicken, the eagle passed away. The moral of the story: You become what you believe you are; so if you ever dream to become an eagle follow your dreams, not the words of a fellow chicken.

Love

How a Malnourished Dog Was Saved By a Love By Travis Manny

Seymour, a dog at the Friends Pet Adoption Center, has a beautiful shiny coat and a very friendly attitude that you can’t help noticing. He shares a large kennel with a few of his closest canine friends, but he also loves slipping out the doggy door to lounge outside in the bright sunlight. He’s come a long way after being found emaciated with a collar embedded into his neck. Since being rescued, he’s received love at every turn, and that includes a foster mom who helped him heal. When Animal Services received Seymour as a stray, he was so thin that every rib showed through his fur. The young dog needed immediate medical attention and weeks of care before he’d be well again. So weak that he couldn’t stand up, Seymour was brought to the Friends Pet Adoption Center, where caregivers removed the embedded collar and put him on a special diet to help him gain weight. Seymour not only started getting stronger every day, but he began to trust the people around him. He became a favorite with many staffers and volunteers, who found it hard to have the blues when they were around a dog with such an indomitable spirit. It would be a while before he would be well enough for adoption, so the volunteer team contacted Missy Golden, who regularly opens her home to pets needing special foster care. Missy made room for Seymour and was determined to help him grow stronger and healthier, so he could find his very own loving family.

4 PAWS LIFE

During Seymour’s first days at Missy’s home, he was still too weak to walk up the stairs. “I had to carry him,” says Missy. “And he was so thin that I could hear his bones creaking.” For the next two weeks, Missy followed his special diet instructions to the letter and gave him baths with oatmeal and tea tree oil to soothe his skin and made his coat shiny. Each day Seymour grew stronger, thanks to Missy’s careful feeding and a lot of love. And Missy’s dog, Lexi, helped Seymour grow more confident around other dogs. It’s always good to have a friend show you the ropes. To Missy, her time with Seymour passed too quickly. After about two weeks, it was time to bring him back to the center. When he walked in the doors, the staff couldn’t believe the transformation. “Missy did a remarkable job caring for him,” says Carol Bounds, volunteer and foster coordinator at the center. “Several of us were in tears at how healthy he looked after gaining some much-needed weight.” Carol says the confidence that Lexi instilled in Seymour is obvious. “He’s constantly wagging his tail. He loves every human and animal he encounters,” she says. Missy went out of town for work after dropping off Seymour at the center. When she returned she went to the center to check on him and thought about fostering him again. But her job was done. The next step for Seymour would be to make sure that potential adopters could meet him at the best possible place — the adoption center. On one hand, Missy missed having Seymour at home, but on the other hand, she knows that the love and care she gave Seymour has enabled him to finally step outside and bask in the sunshine, ready to trust the world again.

Myth or Fact? Raw Diets Raw food diets are the most natural and, therefore, the best diets for cats and dogs.

It’s a Myth

Many pet owners think feeding their dogs and cats food that mimics the raw diet of wild animals is the right thing to do.

Salmonella was found in raw diets and fecal samples from dogs fed raw diets. *2 This poses a threat to members of the household.

The Facts

Bones as part of a raw diet can be hazardous to pets’health.

Raw diets may contain bacteria.

• Raw (and cooked) bones can fracture teeth. • Jagged or sharp points can tear the esophagus, stomach or intestines. • Fragments of bone may become lodged in the gastrointestinal tract.

• Raw meat and poultry may be contaminated with harmful microorganisms, such as salmonella. *1 • Feeding raw meat to pets can expose them to bacteria, parasites and protozoa. Preparing and feeding a raw diet can also expose your family to harmful organisms.

• Members of the household will also be exposed to the same bacteria, protozoa, and parasites when you feed a diet containing raw meat to a cat or dog. • These microorganisms pose a greater risk to the young, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Salmonella Contamination

Raw diets may not be nutritionally balanced or complete. • Diets made of mostly meat or poultry and bones may be lacking in important nutrients. • Calcium deficiency is a common problem with these diets, which can lead to impaired growth, spontaneous fractures and loose teeth. • Vitamin A toxicity can occur if large amounts of raw liver are fed.

PET SITTING IN YOUR HOME

By Liz Maddox

Tall Tails is loving care when you can’t be there! With summer months upon us, a primary concern for most pet owners is what do do with our animals while we’re on vacation. Boarding may be the traditional choice, but professional pet sitting has benefits for both pets and pet parents! Not all pet sitters are professional either. When you are away, you want the best, someone who’s been in business for over 13 years, someone who has over three pages of references, someone who you can trust in your home! Gina Triay, the owner and operator of Tall Tails Pet Sitting, LLC, is the safe, caring, dependable pet care that responsible

pet owners are looking for. It all began in 2005, when Gina was pursuing a degree at Southeastern and trying to brainstorm ways to make some money. She was working in her family’s printing business, and while always an animal lover, it wasn’t until she had a dream about a pet-walking, pet-sitting business that she realized this business would be perfect for her. By 2010, Tall Tails was successful enough to support her and her children. What sets Tall Tails apart from anything like it is the intro-

duction of a new computer app. With an activated account, clients can download the “TimetoPet” app which virtually does everything to connect you to your pets! Once clients set up a profile, Tall Tails can notify pet parents with messages and photos every time Gina or one of her associates visits the home. Clients can book appointments and pay bills through the app. It brings pet sitting to an entirely new level! What kind of pets does Tail Tails care for? “Anything that has a pulse,” says Gina brightly! “Of course dogs make up the majority of her clients, but she’s cared for cats, fish, hamsters, reptiles, birds, and even an adorable pig named Hamlet.” Gina also cares for animals who are on medications or have special needs, and seniors who need extra love and attention. She’s also been known to put together memorial books/videos for those special clients who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. This is a woman who loves her job! In fact, it’s all the extras that she’s committed to that have earned her the position of top-five pet-sitters in the country three times! She’s gives back to the community through fostering. She’s pet CPR certified. She’s loves and cares for her human clients as much as her animal clients. Gina is willing to do almost anything to assure the health and happiness of her clients. She related a story about a Hyacinth parrot Rio who was supposed to be clipped, but instead escaped his home off Carr Dr. to fly across a canal and a swamp with no access!! Gina took the predicament all in stride....she flagged down a passing fishing boat and convinced the occupants to help her in capturing Rio. Her phone call to Rio’s pet parents was simply, “Guess what? Rio can fly!” Gina wants me to know that Tall Tails is so much more

than just a pet-sitting business. It’s her calling, her passion. “Tall Tails is loving care when you can’t be there.” What Gina’s business offers is peace of mind when pet parents are on vacation or away from the home. The benefits of keeping your animals in your home instead of boarding them are innumerable! The animals can follow their regulate routine and diet where they are surrounded by familiar sights and sounds. There is so much less change and trauma, not to mention the risks of disease that animals face in boarding kennels. The benefits to pet parents are knowing your pet is in loving caring hands. It is probably a much less expensive option to boarding especially when you consider all the hidden costs of special vaccines, etc needed before you even set foot in the boarding facility. Just imagine not needing to worry about your pets bringing home fleas, kennel cough, or diarrhea! To secure this service, potential clients should call 985-781-9DOG (9364), Gina will want to begin the process by meeting you and your pets. She’ll begin by giving you a three-page reference sheet because Gina’s business is based on trust. She wants you to feel comfortable and confident with the staff that is coming into your home and caring for your loved ones. She’ll outline the prices which are amazingly reasonable especially for multiple animals, overnight care, and no extra charge for dispensing meds! When you consider that Gina and her staff are working 365 days a year (including Christmas and other holidays) 24/7, her rates are extremely reasonable. Tall Tails Pet Sitting is truly the best, safest, and healthiest choice for your pets. Check out their Facebook page and the website www.TallTailsPetSitting.com.

WHY DO CATS PURR? If

By John Dover

your feline friend is purring away, it may not all be hunky-dory

When a cat purrs, you might think it is as simple as a human smiling or a dog wagging its tail joyfully, but it’s more complicated than that. Cats don’t just purr when they’re happy but also when they’re distressed or afraid, according to pet nutritionists Purina. Evidence shows that purring is not only a method of communication. but a defense mechanism and way to keep calm in stressful or painful situations, such as when visiting the vet or giving birth. Because kittens are born blind and deaf, they need the vibrations from purring to communicate with their mother and littermates. The low frequency of a cat’s purr causes a series of vibrations inside their body that can ease breathing, heal injuries and build muscle while acting as a form of pain relief. Not only does it help sooth the cat, but it is thought that there are health benefits for owners. Cat owners are at 40 percent lower risk of a heart attack lower blood pressure after interacting with cats and hearing their soft purrs.

How Do Cats Purr? Research has shown that cats’ muscles move the vocal cords and, as they breathe in and out, air hits the vibrating muscles, which creates the purring sound. You probably didn’t know that cats that purr can’t roar, and cats that roar can’t purr, because of the small bone found inside the vocal cords, which in roaring cats, is a flexible

10 PAWS LIFE

bone. This allows big cats to make a deep, roaring sound but in domestic cats is completely hardened and only allows air vibrations while exhaling and inhaling. Researchers have also recently identified a new purr called the ‘solicitation purr,’ which alters the normal purr into a more urgent ‘cry-like’ sound, which is similar to that of a crying baby so that we instinctively want to help.

What about meowing? Beyond just purrs, there are thought to be about 16 sound patterns in the cat lexicon, including meows, hisses, and shrieks to convey aggression. Cats make more typical meow sounds by opening and closing their mouths, and those sounds can be friendly or demanding. However, adult cats only meow to humans, not to each other, probably because their mothers stopped responding once they were weaned. “Cats vocalize so well to us because they’ve learned that we humans are really not all that on the ball in figuring out what the tail swish means, what the ear twitch means,” says Gary Weitzman, author of How to Speak Cat. This knowledge of what cats are trying to tell us may be redundant in the near future as pet translators are developing a device that could have us talking with our cats and dogs in 10 years’ time. The analysis using AI software of calls made by prairie dogs to describe colors and species of predators could lead to the concept being applied to household pets.

Sweet Potato Dog Treats Ingredients: 1 medium sweet potato (about 7 ounces) 1 3/4 cups whole wheat flour 1 tablespoon flaxseed meal 1 large egg, lightly beaten Directions: 1. Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Pierce the sweet potato several times with the tines of a fork. Place the sweet potatoes on a rimmed baking sheet lined with foil. Bake until tender, about 45 minutes. Transfer to cooling rack. Reduce oven to 350 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. When cool enough to handle, cut the potato lengthwise and use a spoon

to carefully scoop out the insides; discarding the skin. Puree the sweet potatoes in a food processor until completely smooth. 3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and flaxseed meal. Remove about 1 tablespoons of the egg to a separate cup. 4. Add the sweet potato puree and remaining beaten egg to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. 5. Transfer to a work surface and roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick rectangle. Cut mixture using a caninethemed cookie cutter and place on a prepared cookie sheet. Brush with the

remaining 1 tablespoon beaten egg. Bake for 25-35 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove to cooling racks and allow to cool completely before storing in an airtight container.

Bacon Dog Treats Ingredients: 1 Ripe Banana (this is a great way to use that last banana sitting on your counter looking a bit mushy!) 2 Tbsp. Coconut Oil 1 Cup Oatmeal (we used the quick 1-minute oats type) Directions: 1. In a bowl mix ingredients until thoroughly combined. Set aside and let sit 10 minutes. 2. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees

Ingredients: 3 slices of cooked, chopped bacon 1 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) or sweet potato puree 1 egg 3/4 cup oats 2 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour 1/2 cup all-natural unsalted peanut butter 1/4 cup bacon grease Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 ° F. Cook 3 strips

of bacon. Allow to cool, then chop into fine pieces. 2. In the bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, combine the pumpkin or sweet potato puree, peanut butter, egg, and bacon grease until well blended. Add the oats and flour in batches on slow speed until combined. Stir in the bacon. 3. Working on a floured surface, knead the dough then use a rolling pin to roll the dough to a ¼” thickness. Use a bone or pig shaped cookie cutter to cut out the dog treats. Lay them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. 4. Bake for about 15-20 minutes until lightly brown and cooked. Allow to cool on a wire rack before tossing one to your favorite pup. If you have any concerns about your pet’s diet, please consult your veterinarian before giving them bacon dog treats.
