Now these delegates were sent in that room and asked to find the balloon which had their name written, within five minutes. Everyone was frantically searching for their name, pushing, colliding with each other, and there was utter chaos. At the end of five minutes, no one could find their own balloon. Now each one was asked to randomly collect a balloon and give it to the person whose name was written on it. Within minutes, everyone had their own balloon. The speaker began: This is what's happening in our lives right now. Everyone is frantically looking for happiness all around, not knowing where it is. Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people. Give them their happiness, and you will get your own happiness.

Drink Water For Better Skin The benefits of drinking water have been much discussed in the media. Water helps keep you hydrated, which is important because every single cell in your body needs it in order to absorb nutrients and expel waste products. But one, less well-known benefit of drinking water is its effect on skin. Drinking plenty of water is great for your skin. Chances are if you don't drink enough water, you could suffer from dry skin, and you'll be likely to use more creams and lotions to moisturize. However, creams and lotions don't strike at the root of the problem. Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin moisturized and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you don't drink enough water, your body will try to retain it in order to conserve resources. This retention makes your skin puffy and can even lead to bloating.

Stress Reliever While passionflower has long been considered a “folk remedy for anxiety and insomnia, a few studies have shown that the herb may actually be comparable in effectiveness to benzodiazepine drugs, which are used to treat stress. Though not proven, it is believed that passionflower works by increasing levels of a chemical called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. This lowers the activity of some brain cells, making you feel more relaxed. Passionflower is available in a variety of forms, including infusions, teas, liquid extracts, and tinctures. It is not recommended for children or for women who are pregnant or nursing.

Health Benefits of Coconut Oil Studies have shown that the intake of coconut oil can help our bodies mount resistance to both viruses and bacteria that can cause illness. Even more, it also can help to fight off yeast, fungus and candida. Coconut oil can also positively affect our hormones for thyroid and blood-sugar control. People who take coconut oil tend to have improvements in how they handle blood sugar since coconut can help improve insulin use within the body. Coconut oil can boost thyroid function, helping to increase metabolism, energy and endurance. It increases digestion and helps to absorb fat-soluble vitamins.

Health Secrets of Dark Chocolate It's said that dark chocolate can be good for your heart, and new research may have uncovered why. Louisiana State University researchers tested cocoa powder in a model of the digestive tract and found that certain bacteria in the stomach eat dark chocolate, ferment it, and then release anti-inflammatory compounds that benefit the heart. Study leader John Finley, a professor in LSU's department of food science, said, "When these compounds are absorbed by the body, they lessen the inflammation of cardiovascular tissue, reducing the long-term risk of stroke." The researchers also found evidence that people could gain even greater health benefits if they eat dark chocolate with solid fruits such as pomegranates and acai.

Apple Seeds are Poisonous Apple seeds do contain a small amount of cyanide, which is a lethal poison, but you are protected from the toxin by the hard seed coating. If you eat whole apple seeds, they pass through your digestive system relatively untouched. If you chew the seeds thoroughly, you will be exposed to the chemicals inside the seeds, but the dose of toxins in an apple is small enough that your body can easily detoxify it. You would have to eat a whole lot. By crude calculations, half a cup of seeds would make you quite ill, and the seeds of over 2000 apples would kill you.

supplementREVIEW by: mikeMILLS Heal the Body & Relax the Mind with Aromatherapy Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering a person's mind, mood, cognitive function and/or health. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils, aetherolea, or simply as the "oil of" the plant from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. Oil is "essential" in the sense that it carries a distinctive scent, or essence, of the plant. There is a wide variety of these essential oils available at Health Food & Nutrition stores that can be used for many therapeutic purposes. Eucalyptus oil comes from the dried leaves of the eucalyptus tree. The oil is a colorless liquid with a strong woody and sweet scent. Eucalyptus

oil may have antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties - people use eucalyptus oil to help treat a wide range of medical conditions. It is used to help relieve symptoms of the common cold and is found in many cough lozenges and inhalants. It is also an effective all natural insect repellent. In 1948, the U.S. officially registered eucalyptus oil as an insecticide and miticide. Tea tree oil has been a favorite among Australians for centuries. Only in recent years, however, has it gained popularity in aromatherapy. With strong antiseptic and germicidal properties, tea tree is now used for a number of applications. During World War II, Australian soldiers carried tea tree oil in their first-aid kits as a treatment for skin injuries.

Peppermint essential oil has many uses. It's used to soothe nausea and other stomach issues, perk up the senses, and cool overworked muscles (thanks to the menthol). Peppermint also helps to clear congestion, quiet headaches, and tackle symptoms from PMS. Lavender oil is used for restlessness, insomnia, nervousness, and depression. It is also used for a variety of digestive complaints including meteorism (abdominal swelling from gas in the intestinal or peritoneal cavity), loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea, intestinal gas (flatulence), and upset stomach. Some people use lavender for painful conditions including migraine headaches, toothaches, sprains, nerve pain, sores, and joint pain. It is also used for acne and cancer, and to promote menstruation. Free radicals (also called Reactive Oxygen Species) that cause oxidative stress are directly asso-

ciated with inflammation, aging, and carcinogenesis. The body possesses various anti-oxidative systems, and saliva is one such system. In one study on rosemary benefits, Japanese researchers found that smelling lavender and rosemary essential oils in aromatherapy increased the production of saliva and reduced stress hormone cortisol levels significantly. They concluded that these oils could protect the body from oxidative stress and relieve stress. Other studies too have confirmed that rosemary leaves exhibit potent anti-inflammation and anti-tumor effects. Ultrasonic Oil Diffusers are perfect for daily and year-round use and are a healthy alternative to synthetic room fresheners and scented candles. These diffusers are BPA-free and utilize high-frequency ultrasonic electrical vibrations to create an ultra-fine aromatherapy mist. This diffusion method doesn't uti-

lize heat, which maintains essential oil integrity and holistic properties. Stress, whether it is physical or emotional, affects everyone in their daily lives. Using essential oils aromatherapy can help provide stress relief and improve one’s quality of life. Make sure to sample different scents when shopping in your favorite local nutrition store, and you may be pleasantly surprised at how good they make you feel!

Precious Time by: dr kristinSMITH Iliotibial Band Syndrome, Runner' s Knee, ITBS... Call it what you want, it' s not fun! The IT band is a fibrous ligament, extending on the outside of the pelvis to the lower leg. When this ligament becomes tight, it shortens, and can begin to rub against the lower portion of the thigh bone. This friction often leads to inflammation and irritation, ultimately leading to aches and pain. It is most commonly seen in runners, hence the name, Runner's Knee. Typical symptoms include pain during flexion or extension of the knee (like during walking or running), relief with rest, pain on the outside of the knee that begins gradually, trigger points along the outside of the leg and into the buttocks, or pain made worse when running or walking downhill. Although it often happens when activity level is increased too rapidly or with insufficient stretching, underlying weakness of abdominal muscles, pelvic instability/imbalance, or improper foot position (like over-pronation) can also be involved. It can also been seen with tight and/or weak gluteus medius, quadriceps, hamstrings, and adductors, or even simply from running regularly on an oval track. Rest, along with stretching of the previously mentioned tight muscles and strengthening of the abdominals can go a long way, but may only provide temporary relief. This is because the underlying structural issues must be addressed for any long term improvement. From a chiropractic standpoint, it is of utmost

Franco’s opened THE BOX in the summer of 2013 in an effort to accommodate the growing Crossfit craze. But a club that has received recognition from across the globe for offering the highest caliber in fitness programming wasn't about to just dust off a warehouse, paint some graffiti, and throw in a few kettle bells. Instead, Franco’s opened the doors to an 18,000 square foot, cutting-edge training facility at the intersection of highways 190 and 22, complete with fully equipped locker rooms, access to childcare, and the most advanced fitness and sports performance programs led by certified trainers. Here is a closer look at what’s inside THE BOX:

CROSSFIT: Crossfit is well known for its constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity. The program has earned a devout following because participants achieve fitness levels beyond what they ever thought possible in an environment infused with camaraderie and competition. And because it can be adapted to any fitness level, individuals from all walks of life are coming to THE BOX to become a part of the Crossfit community. But as the popularity of Crossfit has grown, so has the criticism. Crossfit has raised eyebrows across the health and fitness industry for its intense and sometimes extreme workouts. But safety is something that Franco’s founders and staff take very seriously, and Franco’s launched Crossfit in the same way it launches all new fitness programs – after thorough research, training and certification and under the direction of educated, experienced fitness professionals. Franco’s Crossfit trainers are qualified and dedicated to maximizing results and minimizing risk.

SPORTS PERFORMANCE: Training from Athletic Republic optimizes each ath-

Football and combat sports have been connected for years as NFL players have often used fight training to improve their athletic conditioning. Recently, however, more and more college and professional football players are making the transition to MMA as a career. In MMA, a combatant must possess a unique combination of speed, power, agility and technique, and although a hulking linebacker may boast explosive power and brute force, there is no guarantee he will be victorious against a single opponent in the cage. So when players do cross over, it attracts a lot of attention. On Saturday, April 26th at the Northshore

Why did you make the transition from football to MMA? “I played fullback at LSU, and I’ve always been interested in MMA. But with my academics and football I never had time to pursue it. I knew that UFC fighter Shawn Jordan used to play the same position as me at LSU a year before me, and his success in the UFC was motivational for me. So after graduating from LSU with a degree in psychology, I had the time to explore MMA.”

How is the training and preparation different? “The training is a lot more cardio focused, and this was a huge transition for me. In football there is time to rest between plays. In fighting, you have five full minutes of combat with no rest. It’s exhausting. I had to learn to control my breathing, and I had to drop weight so I could move better. I went from 245 to 206.”

What does MMA mean to you? “I love the honesty of the sport. What you put in is what you get out. I’ve always been good at fighting, and this sport is very physical and competitive, like me. So me and this sport just click. It has been six months since my last fight, so I am eager to get back in and have fun. Also, my coach Rich Clementi is the best. He’s my role

What is your prediction for the April 26th fight? “Well I don’t think anyone goes into a fight expecting to lose, at least I hope they don’t. That being said, I’m definitely expecting a win. It’s going to be an exciting fight.” Both Scott O’Shaughnessy and James Stampley will be competing along with many other fighters in the 7th Gladiator Combat Championships on April 26th, at 7:00pm. For ticket information, call 855-NOLOVE-1, or go to www.cagetix.com/NOLOVE1. Even though I am a little squeamish when it comes to watching fights, I would not miss this event, and I’ll be cheering for these two men as they bring their skills from the football field into the cage!

every day for the rest of your life. An ounce or three teaspoons will cover the entire body. Sunscreen can be in the form of topical lotions, creams, gels, and sprays. A stick form is available for your lips. There are no “waterproof” or “sweat-proof” sunscreens. Sunscreen labels have to state they are “water-resistant” for 40 minutes or 80 minutes while swimming or sweating. Reapply sunscreen every two hours while under these conditions.

A sunscreen that is not broad-spectrum or less than SPF 15 will protect against sunburn but not skin cancer. 90% of skin cancers are caused by sun exposure. If you have more than five sunburns in your lifetime, your risk for skin cancer doubles. UV radiation plays a role in melanoma especially in fair-skinned individuals. Protect your skin from UV radiation while driving and if you work by a window since UVA rays penetrate glass. UV protective clothes are available and can add to sun protection. Wear a wide-brim hat to protect your face and 100% UV protective wraparound sunglasses to protect your eyes. When Ben Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” he was not talking about the use of sunscreen; however, his axiom can be applied today. It is easier to prevent future problems than to fix them afterwards, so wear sunscreen every day.

>>> How did I become a chiropractor? While getting my undergraduate degree, I worked for a chiropractor. I saw a different approach to health, one that addressed the body as a whole instead of a series of symptoms. So many people came in after trying nearly everything to change the way their bodies functioned. I saw them leave the office with a renewed sense of hope. Watching people function better inspired me to help people find what works for them as individuals. I wanted to help people see that their bodies are capable of many things without the aid of drugs or surgery.

Kristin, Nathan, Ian and Shelby Smith >>> Background & Education

In my field, there are very few women. Things are starting to change, but right now a female Chiropractor can be somewhat of a rarity. Being female comes in handy when helping pregnant moms get through a pregnancy and sometimes just adjusting women in general. I'm not taking anything away from all the amazing male docs out there, it's just something that makes me different. Also, coming from a very active family, I've experienced many sports and activities first hand. I feel this has helped me to better understand what types of things my patients' bodies have had to endure and how this could have led to how they may be feeling when they come into the office.

I have a Bachelors degree in Exercise Physiology and graduated with honors from Life University. To be licensed in Louisiana, a chiropractor must have a Bachelor's degree then attend an accredited four year chiropractic college. I was also required to take four national boards that covered subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Radiology, Chiropractic principles, case management, and clinical sciences. Additionally, Louisiana required that I pass a Chiropractic Physiotherapy board too.

>>> Managing career and family Phew! We just added a daughter to our family three months ago so life has been a little hectic, but I love my job and I love watching people change with each visit. It makes the balance between family and work worth it. It helps that I'm in a field where most people are home from work while I'm just getting started. This enables me to be with my family as much as possible while they're still so young. Also, my practice is very family friendly as many of the people coming in to the office are children or pregnant moms, so sometimes my own children can be found playing at the office with the other children.

>>> Skeptics It's been my experience that most people who are skeptical have never seen or even spoken with a chiropractor. I always tell them that I am open to any questions they might have and would love to help them understand better what I do and how Chiropractic might help them. The Chiropractic field has really been evolving and recently had quite a few amazing breakthroughs in research. I'm always encouraging people to look it up for themselves.

Subluxations or misalignments, in these areas can alter biomechanics, causing joint instability and muscle weakness. Chiropractic utilizes specific adjustments to correct underlying biomechanical issues as well as remove pressure on nerves. The restoration of nerve flow to the target tissues and proper joint alignment is an absolute necessity in the healing process of any tissue. Pain Corner Continued the Medical Center of South Carolina (MUSC) and the University of Virginia (UVA), Dr. Domangue was selected to instruct neurology at the University of Kentucky (UK). There, he trained under one of the world’s most prominent specialists in pain management, Dr. William Witt, becoming one of only 200 Neurologists throughout the Country fellowship trained in interventional pain management. What is an Interventional Pain Management Specialist? Dr. Domangue has created a three step approach to end pain. 1. Accurate Diagnosis, 2. Micro invasive options, therapy, and medications, and 3. Surgical evaluation. As an Interventional Pain Management Specialist, Dr. Domangue has found the present referral system to be backward, as the current model has the spinal surgeon doing major surgery, which often requires hardware; then referring the patient to pain management afterwards. After a patient has opted for major surgery, many minimally invasive procedures are no longer an option. According to Dr. Domangue, this is where the system has failed. A patient should see a surgeon only when all else has proved unsuccessful. Surgeons are trained to cut; neurologists are trained to diagnose. The average patient is likely not equipped with the knowledge

to make educated decisions regarding who will lead their medical care.

There are also “pain management doctors” who only do medication management and/or a limited number or range of procedures. When considering a physician to treat and diagnose pain, a patient will need to seek out an expert in the field that has been trained at the highest level, in all treatment modalities (both interventional and non-interventional) and is ACGME accredited. This accreditation serves as a set of standards that all primary fields of medicine have agreed are most important in becoming a pain management doctor. The physician must pass a written board exam to become an ACGME board certified pain management doctor. Dr. Domangue considers himself a “pain-detective”; an interventional specialist trained in diagnosing and treating diseases that covered everything from the muscle to the brain. Dr. Domangue has developed a reputation as a pioneer in the field of medicine. In 2011, he was one of the first physicians to offer

by: lindaCUCCIA Emotional well-being, or the ability to manage our emotions effectively, is a very important part of building a healthy lifestyle. Strong negative emotions like jealousy, anger, resentment, and disappointment can take us far off course and can have adverse effects on the mind and body. These emotions can also harm our personal and business relationships. Too often we confuse our knee-jerk emotional responses with reality and then feel powerless to change them. So how can we improve our emotional health and maintain peace and stability in our lives? The first step is to recognize emotional responses when they happen. For example, when someone gets a promotion or achieves a goal, especially one we ourselves have been striving for, our initial reaction may be envy or jealousy. Rather than allowing the feeling to abide, and the negative thoughts that follow, we can acknowledge it immediately. We can do the same when we react with anger, or feel the sudden drop of disappointment, or the sharp sting of rejection. Whatever the situation, simply realizing and admitting that a strong emotional reaction has occurred can arrest the power of it significantly. The second step is to separate ourselves from the emotion by not behaving in accordance with it. An angry feeling does not necessitate an angry response. Instead we may examine the emotion to see what caused it, or simply decide to behave respectfully until we arrive at the place of complete understanding, which may take time. In either case, separating our behavior from our emotions is a powerful acknowledgement of our love and compassion for ourselves and others. The third step is to engage often in activities that assist us in finding emotional peace and tranquility. Personally, I run long distances and do yoga several times a week. During exciting and tumultuous times in my life, I have found that these two activities require that I be fully engaged in the present moment. My focus shifts from exterior stimulus to the breathing and the balance, and for the duration of the activity, I am completely immune to the worries and cares of life. Psychologist and award winning author Daniel Goleman writes, “If you do a practice and train your attention to hover in the present, then you will build the internal capacity to do that as needed - at will and voluntarily. By practicing physical activities like these, we learn to find that same internal peace whenever it is required, especially in the midst of triggers or circumstances. Eventually as we gain emotional maturity, we benefit from channeling our emotional responses as energy to accomplish goals in life, like overcoming obstacles and conquering fears. But until we reach that place, we can protect our cherished relationships, our self-esteem, and our hearts and minds, by recognizing our strong negative emotions, separating ourselves from them, and choosing positive, appropriate behaviors in spite of them. Every decision counts.
