MARIE LA TRADITION À LA GASTRONOMIE Depuis près d’un siècle et demi, la famille Mayer veille sur la destinée du BEAU RIVAGE et cela n’est pas près de s’arrêter puisque les deux filles représentant la cinquième génération ainsi qu’un neveu du propriétaire sont déjà intégrés à l’établissement.

Voici un projet à long terme assez peu courant pour mériter d’être souligné. A l’origine, c’est l’emplacement, soit la vue sur la rade et la proximité de la gare Cornavin, qui ont convaincu l’aïeul de construire à cet endroit. L’histoire lui a donné raison. Les visiteurs illustres qui l’ont fréquenté – de l’Impératrice Sissi à l’empereur du Japon, Akhito, et du Dalaï Lama à Catherine Deneuve- sont légion.

Son restaurant Le Chat Botté compte en revanche parmi les meilleures tables du canton. Et son chef, Dominique Gauthier est coté 18/20 chez GaultMillau. Contemporaine et créative, la cuisine que l’on y goûte est un enchantement. Sa seconde table, le restaurant thaïlandais Patara, offre un choix de plats très finement préparés. Quant au Bar de l’Atrium, proche du Lobby, il se transforme en hiver en Chocolat bar pour la plus grande joie des enfants, et autres gourmands de tous âges. C’est un rendez-vous incontournable pour les familles.

Une fois par mois, le Wine & Business Club de Genève, fort de 450 membres, réunit ses membres à l’Hôtel autour de vins exceptionnels accompagnant un menu raffiné élaboré par Dominique Gauthier.

Les événements culturels ne manquent pas non plus. Et à chaque manifestation de Sotheby’s, partenaire dont les bureaux sont au rez-de-chaussée du Palace, celui-ci vit au rythme des ventes aux enchères pendant deux à trois jours avec l’animation que cela suppose.

Combining tradition with fine dining

For over a century and a half, the Mayer family have been managing the Beau Rivage, and this is set to continue: the present owner’s two daughters, plus a nephew, are already working at the hotel, the fifth generation to do so.

This is a business that takes a long-term view, an approach that is becoming unusual in today’s fast-paced world. In the beginning it was the location, close to Cornavin railway station and with a splendid view over the harbour, that convinced Jean-Jacques Mayer that this was the site on which to build his hotel. History has proved him right. Countless illustrious guests have stayed there, from Sissi, Empress of Austria to emperor Akihito of Japan, and from the Dalai Lama to Catherine Deneuve.

One of its restaurants, Le Chat Botté, is regarded as being among the finest in the canton. Its chef, Dominique Gauthier, is given a rating of 18/20 in the GaultMillau restaurant guide, and his contemporary, inventive cuisine is a joy. The other restaurant, Patara, offers a choice of subtly-flavoured Thai dishes, and close to the lobby is the bar, L’Atrium. This offers a Chocolate Bar in winter, to the delight of children and chocolate-lovers of all ages. It’s a must-visit destination for families.

Once a month, some of the Geneva Wine & Business Club’s 450 members meet at the hotel over a menu of sophisticated dishes, devised by Dominique Gauthier and accompanied by some very special wines.

There’s no shortage of cultural events either. Sotheby’s, a partner of the hotel with offices on the ground floor, holds auctions there which last for two or three days, adding an extra buzz to its atmosphere.

En ce temps-là Genève avait tout pour plaire En ce temps-là, Genève, 22e canton à avoir rejoint en 1814 la Suisse, recense 106’000 habitants dont 216 millionnaires et tout ce petit monde vit en parfaite harmonie. Le Palais des Nations, qui abritera la Société des Nations (SDN), puis l’Organisation genevoise des Nations Unies (ONU) n’existe pas encore.

L’Agence Cook organise de son côté des excursions quotidiennes en break à destination du Salève d’où la vue sur la ville et la rade lacustre, empanachée d’un hardi jet d’eau de 35 mètre de haut, est une merveille.

A propos du lac, on note qu’il est situé à 372 mètres d’altitude et qu’il est d’un beau bleu alors que les 12 autres lacs helvétiques sont plutôt verts. Appelé lac de Genève, mais aussi Léman, il s’étire sur 72 km de long et 13 km dans sa largeur maximale (entre Morges et Thonon). Sa profondeur peut atteindre 309 mètres. Avec une superficie de 58’200 ha, soit 4’400 de plus que celui helvético-allemand de Constance, il est le plus grand d’Europe occidentale. C’est dans ses abysses que sont pêchés généralement les brochets, gros poissons à la chair goûteuse.

Pour s’y déplacer, ainsi que dans les agglomérations françaises voisines, a été créé un réseau de tramways électriques fort bien pensé et bon marché. Une ligne particulièrement intéressante est celle en ville qui dessert rapidement depuis la Gare Cornavin, en empruntant le Pont du Mont-Blanc qui fait encore bien son travail, la place centrale du Molard. Plusieurs localités situées de l’autre côté de la frontière sont également reliées par un tram à vapeur.

Ce lac, traversé sur toute sa longueur par le Rhône, est une véritable aubaine pour Genève et les localités suisses et françaises qu’il baigne. Des mini-croisières y sont proposées – tout comme aujourd’hui d’ailleurs – à bord de spacieux bateaux à vapeur dotés de grandes roues à aube. La sécurité de ces embarcations est garantie! Elles remontent en 3 h 30 ce qu’il est convenu d’appeler le petit lac en raison de son étroitesse sur ses derniers kilomètres. Mais le luxe suprême consiste à faire le tour complet du lac en 9 heures.

Des fiacres offrent parallèlement un service intra et extramuros. Ces hypotaxis individuels ou collectifs (quatre personnes au maximum) circulent de jour comme de nuit. Un petit bémol toutefois: il convient de prendre garde aux tarifs pratiqués par les cochers qui ont une légère tendance à forcer sur la note!

Les localités approchées ont pour nom Lausanne, qui compte 42’000 habitants, ville toute en montées et en descentes, où les autochtones ont eu l’heureuse idée de relier le haut et le bas par un funiculaire appelé familièrement ficelle; Vevey, seconde ville du canton de Vaud, où l’on apprend que Jean-Jacques Rousseau y a planté le décor de son roman La Nouvelle Héloïse et que l’Eglise Saint-Martin sert de sépulture aux deux juges Rroughton et Ludlow qui condamnèrent à mort le roi Charles Ier d’Angleterre en 1648. Ces deux curieux touristes choisirent de s’exiler dans cette charmante bourgade après avoir prononcé leur sinistre sentence.

En face, sur la rive française, s’étire Evian, lieu de cure fort prisé avec son Casino sur la Promenade du Lac, son joli Théâtre et ses Bains aux eaux bicarbonatées mixtes froides.

Bref, Genève a tout pour plaire. Et l’on ne peut qu’évoquer ses illustres visiteurs qui, tout au long de sa riche histoire, y ont séjourné ou s’y sont installés. Et ce depuis Jules-César qui s’y arrêta avec son armée le temps de jeter un pont sur le Rhône pour pouvoir poursuivre sa route ou, plus tard, l’admirable peintre souabe Conrad Witz qui installa son chevalet au bord du lac pour donner naissance à son chef-d’œuvre La Pêche miraculeuse. Ou Jean Calvin qui choisit l’an 1554 pour s’établir à Genève pour une longue durée puisqu’il y mourut après avoir fait de la ville la Rome protestante. A ce propos, le Conseil de Genève avait prévu de faire cadeau au roi Henri IV d’une Bible française imprimée à Genève, splendidement reliée en marocain rouge avec les armes de France et de Navarre. Mais il y renonça suite à sa conversion au catholicisme! palace

Ou encore, un peu plus tard, le Duc Charles Emmanuel de Savoie accompagné de ses hommes armés qui tenta à l’aube du XVIIe siècle de s’en emparer. La visite fut courte! Quant à François-Marie Arouet, dit Voltaire, il l’aima tant qu’il fallut presque user de la force pour l’en déloger tandis que la poétesse anglaise Marie Shelley, invitée en 1816 chez son ami Lord Byron, dont la belle maison surplombe le lac, y conçut par une nuit d’orage l’abominable Frankenstein.

The days of the League of Nations, which will become the United Nations, and the construction of the Palais des Nations as its headquarters, are some way in the future.

On pourrait encore citer Franz Liszt qui y abrita plusieurs années ses amours secrètes ou Casanova qui y déniaisa une belle autochtone sous un arbre du Parc Mont-Repos. Et puis, gardons le meilleur pour le dessert, le Duc Charles II de Brunswick qui y séjourna durant les dernières années de sa vie et qui y fut si heureux qu’il légua à sa mort, en l873, 20 millions de francs à la Ville, somme fort coquette à l’époque. Du coup, les autorités érigèrent devant la rade lacustre un véritable monument rappelant étrangement celui de Can Signorio Della Scala à Vérone composé d’un baldaquin à trois étages, dont celui du milieu renferme un sarcophage avec la statue du généreux donateur.

Travel within Geneva itself, and in the adjacent French urban areas, is facilitated by a carefully-planned, inexpensive electric tram network. One particularly useful city route is that which provides a rapid link between the Cornavin railway station and the Place du Molard, via the very busy Pont du Mont-Blanc. Several localities on the other side of the border with France are similarly connected by a steam tram service.

Rien donc de bien nouveau sous le soleil. Puisque ce portrait en zig-zag de Genève s’inspire en bonne partie du Guide allemand Baedeker de la Suisse, le Michelin de l’époque, qui date de ... 1898!

The Thomas Cook travel agency organises daily excursions by horse-drawn carriage to Mont Salève, where passengers can admire the view over the city, its harbour, and the lake, embellished some 12 years ago by the addition of a splendid fountain, which reaches a height of 30 metres.

long as was necessary for a bridge to be built across the Rhône so that he could continue on his way. Much later, the German painter Konrad Witz, following in Caesar’s footsteps, placed his easel by the lake and created his masterpiece The Miraculous Draught of Fishes. Then, in 1554, John Calvin settled in the city, making it the Rome of Protestantism by the time of his death there ten years later. A few decades later, the Council of Geneva intended to present King Henri IV of France with the gift of a Bible in French bearing the arms of France and Navarre, printed in the city and beautifully bound in red Moroccan leather, but had to abandon the idea when the king converted to the Catholic faith.

Lake Geneva is situated at an altitude of 372 metres, and is a beautiful blue, unlike Switzerland’s 12 other large lakes, which are of a greener hue. Known in French both as Lac Léman and Lac de Genève, it is 72 km long, measures 13 km at its widest point (between Morges and Thonon), and the river Rhône passes through its entire length. Its surface area of 58,200 hectares makes it not only 4,400 hectares larger than Lake Constance, but the largest lake in western Europe. Its waters plunge to a depth of up to 309 metres, and are excellent for fishing, particularly for the large and delicious pike.

In December 1602, Duke Charles Emmanuel of Savoy came to Geneva with his troops, intending to seize it. His visit was brief, as his army was rapidly routed by the valiant citizens. As for François-Marie Arouet, better-known as Voltaire, he loved the place so much that he almost had to be compelled by force to leave. The English writer Mary Shelley and her poet husband came in 1816 as guests of their friend Lord Byron, who owned a house overlooking the lake, and it was here, as a thunderstorm raged one night, that she wrote her famous gothic novel “Frankenstein”.

This lake is of tremendous advantage to Geneva and to the Swiss and French localities that encircle it. Spacious paddle-steamers provide an extremely safe means of travelling across and around its shores, and the steamer companies offer cruises both short (3½ hours) and long (9 hours), enabling visitors to sail around the narrower part of the lake, known as the petit lac, or its entire circumference.

Franz Liszt caused a veritable scandal by eloping to the city with his married mistress, while one of the city’s lovely maidens lost her innocence to the libertine Casanova under a tree in the Parc Mont-Repos. Last but not least among its famous visitors, Duke Charles II of Brunswick spent the final years of his life in Geneva and was so enamoured of the place that when he died, in 1873, he bequeathed the sum of 20 million francs to the city, with one proviso: that the city fathers should erect a monument to him, modelled on the Scaglieri tombs in Verona, which they duly did.

It stands by the harbour and consists of a three-part canopied structure, the central part of which encloses a sarcophagus with a statue of the generous benefactor.

The towns adjacent to the lake include Lausanne, with a population of 42,000. The residents of this hilly place wisely chose to overcome the disadvantages of its topography by constructing a funicular railway, commonly known in French as the ficelle, to connect its upper and lower parts. Vevey, the second most important town in the Vaud canton, was the setting for Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s novel La Nouvelle Héloïse and is the last restingplace of Andrew Broughton and Edmund Ludlow, who spent their final years as exiles in this charming town because of their involvement in the trial and execution of the English king, Charles I, in 1648.

The excellent hotel restaurants at the Angleterre, BeauRivage, des Berges, Bristol, Metropole and Richemond have already established a leading position for themselves. So there really is nothing new under the sun – and this hotchpotch portrait of Geneva, largely inspired by the 1898 Baedeker Guide to Switzerland, the Michelin of that time, confirms that some things change very little indeed!

Opposite Lausanne, on the French side of the lake, lies Evian, a highly-esteemed spa, with a lakeside casino, pretty theatre, and of course the spa baths, with their cold, bicarbonate-rich water containing a mixture of minerals.

Geneva has always had much to interest the visitor. One has only to look back at the many famous people who, throughout its long and eventful history, have stayed here, some even making it their home. Julius Caesar halted here with his army, remaining only as palace

The small village of Montricher, at the foot of the Jura mountains in the Vaud canton, is home to an unusual new establishment.

The new and architecturally unusual Maison de l’Ecriture now rises above the pine woods overlooking Lake Geneva. The complex comprises two main buildings and is intended to create an ideal environment in which writers from all over the world can work, isolating themselves in a rural setting that is conducive to literary creativity. It is complemented by a large, welcoming library containing 85,000 books and a similarly spacious reading room. The library’s first floor, which has large windows, provides additional spaces in which to work.

Emergeant des sapins et surplombant le Léman, se construit une Maison de l’Ecriture pour accueillir un complexe à l’architecture intéressante se composant de deux bâtiments destinés à devenir un lieu de travail idéal pour les écrivains du monde entier.

Pour qu’ils puissent s’isoler dans un environnement campagnard favorisant la création littéraire. Il se complètera d’une bibliothèque accueillante et vaste contenant 85’000 livres, une salle de consultation spacieuse elle aussi. D’autres cabinets de travail, largement vitrés, seront aménagés au premier étage.

Le second bâtiment, lui, est équipé de salles d’expositions et d’un auditorium dévolu aux spectacles, concerts et conférences. Et puis, comme il faut bien que les heureux bénéficiaires de cette oasis de travail unique sous nos cieux, succombent aux bras de Morphée, il offrira aussi des chambres et studios.

And, so that the lucky beneficiaries of this unique retreat have somewhere to sleep at the end of their day’s work, the centre also provides accommodation in the form of writers’ cabins in which they can live as well as work.

Winning the 2013 award for “Best Hotel in Switzerland” at the International Hotel Awards was a wonderful surprise for the Fairmont Montreux Palace.

Les jours de cours, quatre établis authentiques en noyer installés dans la boutique-galerie de la rue des Deux-Marchés, accueillent les «apprentis-horlogers» vêtus de la traditionnelle blouse blanche. THE MEYLAN WATCHMAKING EXPERIENCE VEVEY, SWITZERLAND The ultimate dream of all watch lovers.

Specializing in luxury watches and jewelry in Vevey, Lionel Meylan and his sons are perpetuating a family tradition held for over six generations. Now owners of two boutiques in the old town, they are the ambassadors of the major watch and jewelry brands. Their reputation for excellence is also due to other fields of activity: Lionel Meylan creates personalized jewelry, has jewelry and precious stones evaluated by a gemologist, remodels old jewelry by using the original stones and offers maintenance and restoration services for old clocks and watches.

Since the end of 2012, Lionel Meylan and his sons have invited interested parties to share their passion and know-how through a unique experience. For a morning or an afternoon, Julien or Lionel Meylan will teach watchmaking enthusiasts to take apart and reassemble a watch movement. «At the watchmaking school and in our boutique, curious interns or clients regularly ask if we could help them improve their knowledge in this field and help them to understand the functioning of a mechanical watch», explains Julien Meylan. «That’s why we now offer a course, a practical exercise suitable for everyone».

For these courses, the gallery-boutique on Rue des Deux-Marchés has four authentic walnut workbenches ready for the new watchmaking apprentices clad in the traditional white coats. Connoisseurs of ancient timepieces and people keen to learn something new or wishing to rub shoulders with an unusual profession while vacationing on the Swiss Riviera, will thus discover the complexity of a clockwork mechanism and the very many stages of its servicing. This original exploration of the world of watchmaking and Swiss know-how ends with the presentation of a certificate and a watch maker’s magnifier stamped «Meylan» as proof of the successful watch- making experience.

La prodigieuse destinée de la dynastie Piccard Si une partie du gouvernement et la presse des Etats-Unis n’aiment pas particulièrement les banques suisses, tous deux apprécient en revanche les prouesses scientifiques accomplies depuis quelque temps en maints domaines sur territoire helvétique.

Ce monoplace piloté tantôt par Bertrand tantôt par son complice André Borschborg fit escale notamment, après son arrivée à San Francisco, à Phoenix après moins de 19 heures de vol, puis à Dallas et New York.

Conçu pour planer 5 jours d’affilée, un nouvel avion de conception presque identique, mais avec deux places, est en préparation. Il devrait faire le tour du monde en 2015.

Témoin le planeur géant Solar impulse créé après dix ans d’études par l’ingénieur vaudois Bertrand Piccard issu d’une brillante lignée puisque petit-fils du savant Auguste Piccard qui fut le premier homme à atteindre, entre les deux guerres mondiales, la stratosphère en ballon et fils d’un autre scientifique peu banal non plus, Jacques Piccard constructeur avec lui, dans les années 40, d’un sous-marin de poche capable de plonger dans les plus grandes profondeurs sous-marines.

Dans le cadre des constructions d’engins spectaculaires ne fonctionnant qu’avec des énergies renouvelables, le magnifique catamaran Planet Solar fit beaucoup parler de lui également en 2013.

Il s’est du reste trouvé presque en même temps que l’avion de Piccard à New York. Parti pour un tour du monde scientifique de La Ciotat, près de Marseille, avec quatre scientifiques de l’Université de Genève, pour étudier les courants marins, il a retraversé l’Atlantique depuis Boston en direction de l’Islande, puis de Bergen en Norvège. But du voyage: des tests atmosphériques liés à la libération des aérosols influençant le climat, et, plus globalement, l’étude approfondie du Gulf Stream.

C’est dans le plus grand secret que Bertrand Piccard , qui avait précédemment à son actif le premier tour du monde en ballon sans escale, a donné vie au prototype précité promis à un brillant avenir puisque capable de planer nuit et jour sans une seule goutte de kérosène avec la seule complicité du soleil. The Piccards – a family of high-fliers A new aircraft is now being developed, almost identical in design but with two seats and the ability to fly for 5 days consecutively.

A round-the-world flight is planned for 2015.

One of these involves harnessing solar energy to power aircraft.

A leading example of this is the giant glider Solar Impulse, the result of ten years’ work by the Vaud-born engineer Bertrand Piccard, a member of an illustrious family. Between the two world wars, his grandfather Auguste Piccard became the first man to reach the stratosphere in a balloon, and in the 1940s, his father Jacques worked with Auguste on the bathyscaphe, a submersible vehicle capable of reaching the furthest depths of the world’s oceans.

Another spectacular craft that uses only renewable sources of energy, the superb catamaran Planet Solar, also had everybody talking in 2013. It set off on a scientific voyage from La Ciotat, near Marseille, with four scientists from the University of Geneva aboard. After reaching New York at almost the same time as Piccard’s aircraft, it then went back across the Atlantic from Boston, stopping at Nova Scotia and Newfoundland on the way. The aim of the voyage was to carry out tests related to the release into the atmosphere of sea-spray aerosols, which influence climate, and a study of marine currents, particularly the Gulf Stream.

Bertrand Piccard had already made the first non-stop roundthe-world balloon flight when, in complete secrecy, he developed a prototype aircraft which appears to have a bright future, as it can fly both day and night using only solar power – no kerosene required. The aircraft was dismantled in Switzerland and reassembled in the United States for a promotional tour across the whole country. After arriving in San Francisco, this single-seater aircraft was flown by Bertrand on some occasions and by his business partner André Borschborg on others, with stops at several cities including Phoenix (reached after less than 19 hours’ flying), Dallas and New York.

Enfin espace beauté dans un décor zen, le Spa Puressens se compose d’une série d’unités de soins particulièrement novateurs dans le domaine du corps, de l’esprit et de la nutrition.

The approach to the hotel from the town, via a traditional courtyard, does not give the least hint of the surprise that awaits visitors when they step inside: a beautiful atrium, illuminated by skylights and with rows of marble pillars reaching from one level to the next. A landmark

The Lausanne Palace & Spa hotel was built in the centre of the city in 1915 and is one of its greatest assets. It has everything needed to offer an outstanding service to its guests, whether local or international. This is a five-star hotel where you really feel at home!

The feeling begins in the large and very comfortable lobby, which incorporates a magnificent pine tree, and continues in the spacious bedrooms. Decorated in pale, bright colours, they enjoy a fantastic view over the Alps and the lake.

There’s the elegant, sophisticated one star Michelin restaurant La Table d’Edgard (awarded 17 points by the GaultMillau guide), which has been completely refurbished. Chef Edgard Bovier serves gourmet dishes, 80 of which can be found in his book, Edgard Palace, and if you reserve well ahead, you might even be given the Chef’s Table with a grandstand view of what’s going on in the kitchen. For a completely different ambiance and menu, there’s La Brasserie du Grand Chêne, designed to resemble an old-style Parisian brasserie. The Côté Jardin is famous for its brunch and was awarded 14 points by GaultMillau, while fans of traditional Japanese cuisine will want to try The Palace Sushi Zen. An array of fine wines awaits you at Le Cellier, which serves plates of charcuterie and Swiss cheeses to accompany them.

You can drink cocktails and aperitifs at the LP’s Bar, with its contemporary take on colonial style, and retreat to the Habana Bar after dinner to savour your favourite cigar.

THE CAPRICHOS

by Francisco de Goya (Fuendetodos 1746 – 1828 Bordeaux) Goya is one of those artists who created both a new artistic style and explored new subject matter, during a critical time in European history, but, since Spain had little cultural exchange with the rest of Europe during Goya’s lifetime, it took some time before his work was known and appreciated outside his homeland. It was only in the 19th Century, that his artistic importance was finally recognized. During his long life, Goya was an extremely prolific worker; Mayer’s catalogue lists approximately 900 paintings, more than 700 drawings, around 300 engravings, and 38 lithographs. Although some works have been added over the years and some others have been removed, the number remains very consistent.

The Caprichos have always fascinated those who saw them. At first glance the prints may seem easy to understand. The Series was created in the years 1797–1798 after the American and French revolutions had taken place and while the ideas of the Enlightenment were still a force. Spanish intellectuals were not alone in questioning the usefulness to a nation of a large body of nobles, many extremely wealthy and most of them idle.

The clergy, supported by the state and richly endowed were widely criticized for their laziness, greed, ignorance and moral decay. Men saw poverty widespread and without remedy, as the cause of the frightening degree of brigandage and the great prevalence of prostitution. They blamed this poverty on governments that failed to promote agriculture and industry or to educate the poor and teach them useful trades. But there was little land for an enterprising farmer to buy, because of the vast holdings, of them entailed of the Spanish Church and certain nobles. The inquisition still was very powerful and persisted until 1834. Although executions were rare, the secret trials continued.

Goya’s life was marked by crises, partly personal and partly social in nature, and each time after a crisis, a new facet showed up in his work. Probably the health crises he went through inspired thoughts about life and death instead of personal pleasures. In these times of illness pared with the critical, political surrounding in Spain, Goya surged for an even more personal expression which he found in his etchings and drawings. Especially in the etchings, he developed his greatest ideas that over the years deepened his art more and more. Only at the age of 50 years, did he begin to draw and etch his first large series as a complete work. 1799 this series, of 80 aquatint prints, was published under the name “Caprichos”. This series can be seen as a result of his first serious illness in 1793, which lasted for months and left him deaf for the rest of his life. Certainly, he was inspired by the collection of Sebastiàn Martínez in Cadiz, in whose house Goya spent about half a year due to his illness. Martínez was a great art collector and owned in addition to a variety of paintings some several thousand engravings, amongst them the series “Carceri” (prisons) by Piranesi whose influence is noticeable in some of the “Caprichos”. But most clearly, the “Caprichos” are influenced by the works of Gianbattista Tiepolo and his son Domenico. Especially Gianbattista’s etchings had an impact on Goya as can be assumed by looking at the titles of Gianbattista’s series “Vari Capricci” and “Scherzi”. Also certain stylistic elements from them can be seen in the “Caprichos”. One example is how the technical and stylistic development of Goya can be seen, compared to the early etchings after Velàzquez produced in 1778, the airy rococo-element is gone, only the magical atmosphere remains. Also noteworthy is the width of stylistic variety in the “Caprichos” considering that the series was done in probably less than two years.

The “Caprichos” are unique in its conception and technically outstanding with the use of both etching and aquatint; as a result Goya is seen as one of the great printmakers in art history – comparable to Dürer and Rembrandt (to whom Goya referred as his role model) and the beginning of modernism.

The aquatint technique was a relatively new invention, known for some years but only wider recognized after its publication about 1791 in the Encyclopédie Méthodique. With this technique, Goya achieved a homogeneous background on which the white figures stand out with an extremely modern intensity, while the aquatint sets the tone and the mood.

Goya combines the two techniques of aquatint for the background and etching for the figures, with occasional retouches with drypoint. There are also cases in which he uses only aquatint. Plate 32 is a great example of his use of pure aquatint.

In the illustrations Goya merges dreams, fantasies, social criticism and his own views on the prevailing conditions in Spain which were good for a few, but bad for the majority of the people.

The series was first planned under the title “Sueños”. The 97 known sketches, from the so-called albums of Sanlúcar and of Madrid along with their numbering, let us partially reconstruct the originally planned sequence.

The sketches were performed in three techniques: pen and sepia, sanguine, and red wash. But the “Caprichos” included a wider range of topics than the initially planned series, so that the original drawings and the printed sheets are linked in content and include additional topics in the prints.

The series alternate between scenes of magic and witches to socially critical sheets in which Goya criticizes the ruling elite. When announcing the “Caprichos” in the Diario de Madrid on 6 February 1799, Goya weakened potential criticism with a restrictive statement in which he points out that the satire does not relate to specific people but rather to the general public. This statement was necessary at the time for anyone who expressed criticism of contemporary society and political leaders. Nevertheless, a few prints made it possible to draw conclusions about certain people, a fact which may explains some of the popularity of this series. Especially the interaction between the examination and criticism of contemporary life, and the exploration of one’s own soul and imagination created the great charm of this series and the intensity of the scenes. Often, the two elements can not be separated. In addition, Goya acquired even greater technical skills in the course of time and towards the end of his life, he worked more and more with clear lines and the balance of light and dark to create the contrast between enlightenment and ignorance, between good and evil.

We know that Goya’s patroness, the Duchess of Osuna, bought four sets directly from him. Although Goya was appreciated and encouraged as the court painter of the Spanish nobility and thus could get out of critical situations again and again, it seems that he had to discontinue the sale of the “Caprichos” after a few weeks because of protest by the clergy and the resulting political upheaval. By that time, Goya had sold 27 sets.

In 1803 Goya offered for sale the 80 plates and 240 unsold copies of the first edition to King Charles IV, respectively to the Real Calcografía. In total, by 1937 twelve editions have been issued from of the original copper plates, which are kept in the Calcografía Nacional in Madrid, but only the first one of them during Goya’s lifetime.

Here by implementing his ideas through a perfect handling of the technique, Goya’s greatness was achieved. The “Caprichos” are still actual in content as they leave freedom to interpretation which makes them so fascinating even today.

Zermatt’s Mont Cervin Palace has something for everyone

This establishment, which, curiously, used to be known as La Grande Dame de Zermatt, still outshines its competitors, despite being 160 years old. It began in 1852 with 14 beds, and is now one of Switzerland’s top five hotels, with accommodation for up to 315 people. After a facelift lasting eight months, it returned centre-stage in December 2012.

Various categories of rooms and suites are available: Alpine, whose elegance is emphasised by high-quality materials, the Chalet with cosy wooden rooms and the Chalet Family offers roomy suites to accomodate all the family members.

The Ristorante Capri has been awarded a Michelin star as well as 16 points in the GaultMillau guide, making it the best restaurant in Zermatt, while the Grill, with 14 points, is close behind. So there’s no shortage of fine food. Concerts, themed buffet meals and candlelight dinners make for some very special evenings.

La performance extraordinaire

C’est par un défi à la paroi Nord du géant Cervin à Zermatt que débutait le 30 mars 1990 la performance d’un de ces diables de guides valaisans qui mériterait de figurer en lettres d’or dans le Guinness Book des records.

Monthey. Nouvelle transformation et on retrouvait le marathonien caméléon sur un cheval, rejoignant au grand galop Le Bouveret.

Faisait-il encore jour, faisait-il déjà nuit? Jean Troillet ne le savait plus. Il ne s’en souciait guère en prenant place sur le Léman, dans la yole où il ramait sans fléchir en direction de St-Gingolph.

Un catamaran l’y attendait. Il hissait les voiles et désespérait.

Ni Aquilon, ni même Zéphir n’étaient au rendez-vous.

Pour se dépasser, mais plus encore pour rendre hommage aux handicapés dont il admirait le courage – rien ne m’a plus impressionné, disait-il, que d’avoir rencontré dans l’Himalaya un homme qui venait de grimper à 7’600 mètres avec des béquilles – et qu’il voulait aider, Jean Troillet décidait d’enchaîner coup sur coup treize exploits sportifs devant le conduire en moins de 30 heures et sans moyens mécaniques de Zermatt à Genève. Une course stupéfiante, un pari à la Philéas Fogg, un stupéfiant Jeu de l’Oie grandeur nature, qu’il s’offrira le culot de réussir.

A Evian, il enfourchait un mountain-bike et prenait la route de la Suisse. A la frontière, on lui tendait une planche à voile. Il s’y accrochait, les dieux du vent avaient enfin daigné se lever et l’accompagnaient jusqu’à Vésenaz.

Un dernier coup de collier et voilà notre homme plus frais qu’un gardon et changé lui-même en poisson ou plutôt en plongeur sous-marin, nageant vers le Port- Noir à l’entrée de la rade genevoise, où ses nombreux supporters qui le virent émerger tout sourire dehors lui réservaient un accueil triomphal. Il était l6 heures 53 et l’incroyable odyssée de Jean Troillet avait duré 1 heure et 31 minutes de plus que le temps qu’il s’était imparti.

Autant dire une bagatelle compte tenu, à tous les niveaux, de l’immensité de l’exploit.

A 9 heures 50, il quittait la cabane Hörnli pour se mesurer avec le géant. Une glace traitreusement friable l’y attendait. L’ascension jusqu’au sommet était tellement dure qu’il perdra 2 heures 30 sur l’horaire qu’il s’était imposé. Retour à la cabane. Troillet se harnachait et s’envolait en parapente jusqu’au plateau Rosa.

Changement de costume et vite! vite! il faut rattraper le temps perdu! Jean Troillet reparaissait sur scène en surfeur des neiges.

A Furi, il troquait sa planche pour des skis. Tout schuss – ou presque! – jusqu’à Zermatt où il changeait de lattes pour devenir fondeur-fonceur. A Täsch, le skieur nordique se métamorphosait en cycliste. Il pédala jusqu’à Sion.

Qui osera dire qu’il n’y a plus d’hommes au pays des glaciers sublimes ?

Encouragements, félicitations. Son retard était en partie comblé.

EXTRAORDINARY FEAT

BY A GUIDE FROM ZERMATT An ascent of the north face of the huge Matterhorn at Zermatt was just the beginning of an extraordinary feat on 30 March 1990 by a mountain guide from the Valais, whose name deserves to be written in gold letters in the Guinness Book of Records.

“Well done! Keep going!” said everyone. He had made up some of the lost time. The Rhône was there, he took to it, sailing down to Monthey in a rubber dinghy. Another change, and now our chameleon-like marathon man was on horseback, heading towards Le Bouveret at a gallop.

Was it still day, had night fallen already? Jean Troillet didn’t know and scarcely cared as he reached Lake Geneva and rowed his skiff steadily towards St-Gingolph. A catamaran was ready and waiting. He hoisted the sails – and despaired. The gods of the winds were against him.

“Nothing impressed me more than meeting a man in the Himalayas who had just climbed 7600 metres on crutches.” Jean Troillet not only wanted to set himself a challenge, but also to pay tribute to people with disabilities, whose courage he admires, and whom he wanted to help. He decided to perform a series of thirteen sporting activities that would take him from Zermatt to Geneva in under 30 hours without using mechanical means.

An astonishing race, a gamble to match that of Phileas Fogg in “Around the World in Eighty Days”, a fantastic super-Iron-Man challenge – and what’s more, he had the nerve to actually accomplish it!

At Evian, it was onto a mountain bike and off on the road to Switzerland. At the frontier, someone gave him a sailboard. He clung on to it, and this time his luck was in. There was enough wind to carry him to Vésenaz.

A final effort and our man was there, still on top form, and transformed into a fish, or rather, a scuba diver, swimming towards Port-Noir, at the entrance to Geneva’s harbour. His numerous supporters, seeing him emerge from the water smiling, gave him a hero’s welcome. It was 4.53pm and Troillet’s incredible odyssey had lasted 1 hour and 31 minutes more than the time he had allowed himself – which was trifling, given the scale of his exploit, on every level.

At 9.50am, he left the Hörnli mountain hut to face up to the giant.

A treacherously breakable stretch of ice awaited him. The ascent to the summit was so difficult that he was 2½ hours behind the schedule that he had set himself. Back to the hut, on with a harness, and off he flew in a paraglider to the Rosa Plateau. Another change of costume and then it was “quick, quick, must make up the lost time”! Troillet resumed his performance, this time dressed as a snowboarder. At Furi, he swapped his snowboard for skis. A straight downhill run – well, almost! – to Zermatt, and then he switched skis to become a dynamic cross-country skier.

At Täsch, he metamorphosed again, this time into a cyclist, and pedalled as far as Sion.

Who now will dare to say that there are no men left in this land of heavenly glaciers?

L’hôtel dispose d’un propre club, le célèbre GreenGo prisé pour ses parties légendaires qui ont vu danser depuis tant d’années le Gotha international. Et dans son Spa, les sens sont à l’honneur dans un cadre unique en son genre de 1’800 m2.

En été, le Palace ouvre sa splendide piscine olympique et ses quatre courts de tennis.

Life is beautiful

It now offers everything that guests are entitled to expect in a luxury mountain hotel, and if Gstaad has seen a larger increase in the number of luxury chalets than anywhere else, it’s thanks to the Palace!

Three generations of the Scherz family have managed the hotel, whose 104 bedrooms and suites, all revamped and enhanced over the years, offer a lovely panoramic view over the Bernese Oberland. For several decades, Geneva has been one of the leading administrative centres for the world’s oil industry. And there’s no sign that the source of this activity is about to run dry!

Pour preuve, la Société genevoise Addax Petroleum qui appartient au groupe pétrolier chinois Sinopec, 4e dans le top des plus importants du monde.

One example of this is Addax Petroleum, a Geneva-based company that belongs to China’s Sinopec Group, the fourth-largest oil company in the world.

Dirigé par un ingénieur chinois, Addax compte 270 collaborateurs de 33 nationalités et opère dans les eaux britanniques en Mer du Nord, au Moyen Orient et en Afrique. Elle compte s’installer en 2015 dans un site immobilier de 9’000 m2 (une aubaine pour Genève!).

Managed by a Chinese engineer, Addax has 270 employees of 33 different nationalities and operates in British waters in the North Sea, and in the Middle East and Africa. It has just signed the largest commercial lease in Geneva since 2010, for a 9000m2 office building to which it will move in 2015. This will be a real boost for the city.

LE LÉMAN CAPITALE DU CERVEAU

LAKE GENEVA, THE CAPITAL OF BRAIN RESEARCH

C’est à fin octobre 2013 qu’a été lancé aux portes de Lausanne le projet consacré, à l’échelle mondiale, à des recherches fondamentales sur le cerveau baptisé Human brain project (HBP).

Devisée à 1,2 milliard d’euros répartis sur 10 ans de recherches et soutenue par l’Union européenne avec le concours actif de plus de cent fondations, centres hospitaliers, institutions universitaires, centres de recherche et autres organismes publics ou privés du monde entier, l’entreprise est pilotée par l’Ecole Polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), choisie parmi de nombreux autres candidats. Elle devait engendrer la construction d’un nouveau bâtiment Neuropolis dans le campus de l’EPFL à Lausanne, mais finalement, c’est un superbe immeuble situé à Genève, précédemment occupé par Merck Serono et racheté par son ancien propriétaire Ernesto Bertarelli associé à Hansjörg Wyss, qui a été choisi pour abriter les chercheurs du monde entier. Ce Campus Biotech de 40’000 m2 tout équipé était disponible immédiatement à des loyers très raisonnables.

This venture has a budget of 1.2 billion euros spread over 10 years of research, support from the European Union, and the active involvement of over a hundred foundations, hospitals, university institutions, research centres and other public and private bodies throughout the world. The Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) was chosen from several other candidates to lead the project, which was originally going to be accommodated in Neuropolis, a new building that was to be built on EPFL’s Lausanne campus. However, in the end, a superb existing building in Geneva, now known as Campus Biotech, was chosen as the base for the project’s international team of researchers.

Previously occupied by Merck Serono and bought back by its former owner Ernesto Bertarelli, in association with Hansjörg Wyss, it offered 40’000m2 of fully-equipped accommodation that was available immediately and at a very reasonable rent.

The aim of this huge undertaking is to simulate a human brain and discover the secrets of its neuronal networks. Medical professionals would then be able to select the most appropriate drugs to combat the various illnesses caused by brain malfunction.
