SAUDADE André Soares arbeitet sein halbes Leben im Grand Hotel Kronenhof. Über die Jahre hat er Karriere gemacht bis zum Executive Housekeeper. Und er spielt leidenschaftlich Fussball.

– von Gallus Hufenus Flinke Hände zupfen die Bettlaken zurecht, der Staubsauger röhrt durch Hotelgänge, Blumen werden zusammengestellt. An einem Spitzentag muss André Soares bis zu 60 Zimmer kontrollieren, jeder Raum vor einem neuen «Arrivée» muss geprüft werden. «Unportugiesisch perfektionistisch» sei er, lacht der Executive Housekeeper. Soares fährt mit weissen Handschuhen über die Kommode, um jedes Staubkorn zu entlarven, das seine Mitarbeitenden übersehen haben könnten. Er sei geduldig im Erklären, aber erbarmungslos in der Ausführung.

Seit 20 Jahren, sein halbes Leben, passe er auf sein Grand Hotel Kronenhof auf.

Eindrücklich findet er dabei, dass heute kein einziges Zimmer mehr so aussehe wie bei seinem Arbeitsbeginn – ausser natürlich die Hotelhalle oder das Grand Restaurant. Immer wieder betont Soares aber auch, wie sehr er die familiäre Atmosphäre liebe. Dass das damals kleine Mädchen der Feriengäste heute als junge Dame hier heiratet – und ihn, den Gastarbeiter von einst, noch immer kenne. Sein Bruder war und ist noch heute Portier im Hotel und überzeugte ihn damals, dass es sich in Pontresina gut arbeiten liesse.

André Soares ist wohl nicht der einzige Portugiese, der seinen Verwandten nachreiste. Heute ist er, der jüngere Bruder, der Chef des Erstankömmlings, was aber überhaupt kein Problem sei. «Fälschlicherweise dachte ich vor meiner Abreise, ich könne gut deutsch.» Weit gefehlt. Zu allererst wurde Soares ein Staubsauger in die Hände gedrückt – «also legte ich mal los, von der Hotellerie hatte ich aber keine Ahnung», schmunzelt der bald 40-Jährige. Unterdessen hat er sich stetig hochgearbeitet, Stammgäste freuen sich für ihn und mit ihm. Auch wenn es Leute gebe, die ihn als Portier vermissen. Kein Zufall: Unter Soares wurde die Kartei mit den «besonderen Wünschen» sorgfältig ausgebaut, und so weiss sein Team schon vor der Ankunft, welche Früchte einem Gast besonders

Nimble hands smooth the bedsheets, the vacuum cleaner roars through the hotel corridors, flowers are arranged. On peak days André Soares has to inspect up to 60 rooms – each has to be checked before a new arrival. The Executive Housekeeper jokes that he has an “un-Portuguese perfectionism”. Soares runs white-gloved hands over the chest of drawers to remove every last speck of dust that may have been overlooked by his staff. He says he explains everything patiently, but expects results. He has been looking after the Grand Hotel Kronenhof for 20 years – half his life. He finds it interesting that not a single room now looks the same as it did when he started here, apart from the foyers and the Grand Restaurant. Soares also emphasizes again and again how much he loves the family atmosphere, such as the fact that a young girl who stayed at the hotel with her family in his early days is now coming back to hold her wedding here – and still recognises him, although he is no longer the newly arrived migrant worker he was then. His brother was a porter at the hotel, a post he holds to this day, and persuaded him that he would find good work if he came to Pontresina.

schmecken, ob ein Wandbild ausgetauscht oder die Zimmertemperatur niedriger eingestellt werden müsse. «Es macht mir viel Freude, das Hotel herzurichten, wie ich mein Daheim für gute Freunde parat machen würde.»

Wand der Wörter In seinem Büro fallen die vielen Notizen an den Wänden auf: Auf Portugiesisch, Deutsch und Italienisch sind Saisonziele notiert, auf einem grossen Plakat steht «Wand der neuen Wörter». Daneben sind die Zahlen auf Deutsch aufgeschrieben. Soares möchte, dass seine Mitarbeitenden die deutsche Sprache lernen.

Dies habe er damals bei seinem Arbeitsbeginn vermisst. Die meisten Bewerbungen für Zimmermädchen und Portiers bekommt der Executive Housekeeper von seinen Landsleuten. Nach einer Saison können sich die meisten von ihnen bereits auf Deutsch verständigen. Und seine Mitarbeitenden zeigen trotz der Strenge ihrem Chef viel Wertschätzung: «Ich war sehr gerührt, als mein Team mir als Überraschung ein Video geschenkt hat, in dem ich von Zimmermädchen gespielt wurde.»

Abgesehen von den Checklisten, Beispielfotos für die korrekt eingeräumte Minibar oder den Einsatzplänen, fallen in André Soares Büro die zahlreichen Pokale auf: Der Südländer ist ein grosser Fussballfan. Er lässt sich von «seinem» Club Benfica Lissabon begeistern. Aber auch selbst spielt Soares Fussball: Er ist Mitglied beim Engadiner Verein Lusitanos Samedan, zusammen mit seinen Kollegen, nicht nur Portugiesen, spielt der Aktivsportler in der 4. Liga. Aktiv ist er auch auf dem Fahrrad oder auf den Bergen. Nur der klassische Wintersport, der sei nicht so seine Sache. Zuhause ist der Lissaboner in Pontresina, verheiratet mit der Spa-Managerin Nadine Böning Soares aus Deutschland, die er im Grand Hotel Kronenhof kennen lernte. Aber auch Lissabon ist Heimat. Dort leben seine Mutter und andere Verwandte. André Soares fühle nach so vielen Jahren an beiden Orten dieses Gefühl von Sehnsucht, das man kaum korrekt übersetzen kann und sich «Saudade» nennt.

Weil nur sie dieses Wort besitzen, um es wirklich beim Namen zu nennen.

André Soares was not the only one from Portugal who followed his relatives to the hotel. Today he, the younger brother, is the boss of his elder brother, although he says that doesn’t pose a problem. “Before I came I was under the misapprehension that my German was quite good.” On the contrary, he had a lot to learn. The first thing that happened was that Soares had a vacuum cleaner pressed into his hands “and so I got down to work. I had no idea about the hotel business,” he grins. As he worked his way up through the ranks, he found that regular guests were behind him all the way, even though there are now some who miss having him as porter. That is no surprise – it was under Soares that the “Special Requests” card index system was painstakingly established, ensuring that his team knows before guests arrive what their favourite fruits are, whether a particular picture needs to be replaced or whether the room temperature needs to be reduced. “It gives me great pleasure to present the hotel in the same way as I would prepare my home to welcome good friends to stay.”

Wall of words When you enter his office the first thing you notice are the messages pinned to the wall. Objectives for each season are noted down in Portuguese, German and Italian, and there is a large section entitled “The Wall of New Words”.

Next to this are numbers written out in German. Soares wants his staff to learn the language, and he missed having help like this when he started out. Most of the applications the Executive Housekeeper receives for chambermaids and porters are from his fellow countrymen and women. After one season most of them can make themselves understood in German. And despite his strictness, most of them really appreciate their boss: “I was deeply moved when my team surprised me with a video in which I was played by the chambermaids.”

Alongside checklists, photos showing examples of how a minibar should be correctly set out, and rotas, André Soares’ office also features a large number of sporting trophies – he is a huge football fan and an avid supporter of “his” club, Lisbon’s Benfica. Soares also plays football himself. He is a member of the Engadine club Lusitanos Samedan, playing in the Swiss 4th League together with his colleagues, not all of whom are Portuguese. He is also an active cyclist and enjoys mountain sports, although he isn’t keen on winter sports. Originally from Lisbon, Soares, approaching 40, now feels at home in Pontresina. He is married to the spa manager, Nadine Böning Soares from Germany, whom he met at the Grand Hotel Kronenhof. But he still feels he has roots in Lisbon, where his mother and other relatives live. After so many years living between the two places, André Soares feels a certain yearning, expressed by the practically untranslatable Portuguese word “Saudade”.

BERUFSSTOLZ Im Sommer arbeitet Giuseppe Bera als Maurer, im Winter ist er stolz auf seinen Eisplatz des Kulm Hotel.

Diesen pflegt er von Hand, wie er betont. Und für einen Nachfolger innerhalb der Familie scheint gesorgt.

– von Gallus Hufenus Es ist bereits das zweite Mal in seiner St. Moritzer Karriere, dass Giuseppe Bera einen kompletten Umbau im Neu-Kulm leitet. Die erste Baustelle in diesem Hoteltrakt erlebte er vor 20 Jahren, am Anfang seines Arbeitsverhältnisses im Kulm Hotel. Sowieso, es gibt keinen Teil des Komplexes, an dessen Umbau oder Renovation der Chefmaurer nicht beteiligt gewesen wäre – von der Küche bis zu den Zimmern. «Jedes Jahr öffnet sich eine Baustelle. Und wenn wir durch sind, beginnt es wieder von Neuem», schmunzelt Bera. Auch bei der Erneuerung des Schwesterhotels Grand Hotel Kronenhof war der Handwerker involviert. Der Norditaliener steht auf dem Baugerüst und blickt über den Park – jeden Gebäudeteil kennt er blind. Doch da zeigt er auf einen für ihn noch «unbefleckten» Ort: Den alten Pavillon des Eisplatzes. «Ihm möchte ich gerne noch neues Leben einhauchen», sagt der 57-Jährige.

Eisplatz trägt seine Handschrift Der Handwerker liebt es, wenn die äusseren Umstände den Alltag bestimmen.

Er möchte keine Arbeit tun, wo man auf die Uhr schauen müsse. Eine geregelte Arbeitszeit findet er langweilig. Und zu tun gibt es immer etwas: Im Winter ist dies hauptsächlich sein Eisfeld. Eigentlich sei er nur als Maurer vor 23 Jahren von Brescia ins Engadin gekommen. Doch im Winter gibt es nicht viel zu bauen, so habe er seinen Vorgängern auf dem Eisfeld und der Bobbahn über die Schultern geschaut. «Eismeister wird man nicht an einer Schule.» Und Bera betont, dass er seinen Platz nicht maschinell pflege, sondern in Handarbeit. Die Benutzerinnen und Benutzer würden so die Natur viel unmittelbarer spüren – wenn es kälter oder wärmer wird. Jeder Tag ist anders. Maschinell bearbeitete Eisfelder findet Bera eintönig. Stolz machen ihn dann die Komplimente, die er für sein Eis bekommt. Die Fläche trägt Beras Handschrift: «Wenn es kälter ist, benutze ich mehr Wasser. Wenn es wärmer ist, sprenkle ich weniger, dafür öfter.» Zu Beginn der Saison dauert es drei Wochen, bis der Eisplatz des Kulm Hotel fertig ist.

Aber auch anschliessend muss er jeden Tag gepflegt werden. Spiegelglatt soll es sein. Das sei körperlich eine harte Arbeit. Man ist nachts auf dem Feld, wenn es klirrend kalt ist. «Als ich als Eismeister anfing, waren die Nächte aber noch viel bissiger als heute. Damals sank das Thermometer noch auf –35 Grad», lacht Bera. Ihm behagten jedoch dieses Klima und das Leben in den Bergen.

Zu Beras Pflichtenheft im Winter gehört zudem, dass die Zufahrten gereinigt werden, die Wege und Treppen vom Eis befreit werden oder der Schnee von den Dächern des Hotels oder des Personalhauses entfernt werden muss, damit niemand zu Schaden kommt. Das gibt zu tun: Man blickt auf das Areal des Kulm Parks und schätzt die Fläche grösser als zwei Fussballfelder: Im Winter scheint der Tag nie ein Ende zu nehmen... Freude bereitet Giuseppe Bera schliesslich auch der direkte Kontakt mit Gästen, wenn er Liegestühle bereitstellt oder Schlittschuhe vermietet. «Dabei komme ich sogar mit VIPs in Kontakt.» Stolz erzählt Bera, dass er sich zusammen mit der Fernsehmoderatorin Michelle Hunziker fotografieren lassen konnte.

PROFESSIONAL PRIDE In summer, Giuseppe Bera is a mason, while in winter the ice rink at the Kulm Hotel is his pride and joy. He takes care of it manually, as he is keen to highlight. And a successor from within his family looks likely.

It is the second time during his career in St. Moritz that Giuseppe Bera has managed a full renovation in the New Kulm wing. His first experience of a building site on the premises was 20 years ago, when he first came to work at the Kulm Hotel. At any rate, there is no part of the complex that has undergone renovations or alterations in which the master mason has not been involved – from the kitchens to the bedrooms. “Every year there are construction works of some kind. And when we’ve worked our way through, we start again from the beginning,” Bera smiles. The craftsman also played a part in the renovation of the sister hotel, the Grand Hotel Kronenhof. The Italian stands on the scaffolding and looks out over the park. He knows every part of the buildings like the back of his hand. Then he points out a place that is so far untouched by him: the old ice rink pavilion. “I would love to breathe new life back into that,” the 57-year-old says.

Familie reist nach Italiener wie Giuseppe Bera gab und gibt es viele im Oberengadin: Roland Weingart von der Gemeindeverwaltung St. Moritz meldet auf Anfrage, dass aktuell im Ort 356 italienische Staatsangehörige zwischen 16 und 65 Jahren fest angemeldet sind. «Wir schätzen, dass mehr als 90 Prozent davon auch erwerbstätig sind.» Zudem sind, je nach Saison, zwischen 1200 und 1400 Grenzgänger gemeldet, wovon praktisch alle aus Italien stammen. Weingart meint, dass auch hier die Mehrheit täglich über die Grenze pendle.

«Von meiner Familie war ich der Erste», schmunzelt der Brescianer Giuseppe Bera. Zwei seiner Brüder arbeiten ebenfalls in St. Moritz, auch sie pflegen im Winter Eis – den Cresta Run. Und zwei seiner Söhne seien unterdessen ebenfalls ins Engadin zum Arbeiten gekommen. Im Sommer, an Wochenenden oder wenn es mal keine Arbeit gibt, fährt Bera die eineinhalb Stunden nach Hause, in den Süden, zu seiner Frau und dem dritten Sohn. Ob er sich so mehr als Italiener oder Schweizer fühle, könne er nicht sagen. «Theoretisch bin ich jetzt genug lange in St. Moritz, um die Schweizer Staatsbürgerschaft zu beantragen.»

Aber für ihn sei dies nur ein Papier. Wichtiger sei das Herz: Und dieses schlägt für sein Kulm Hotel.

The ice rink with his trademark Bera loves it when his everyday life is shaped by the outdoor conditions. He would not like a job where he was always looking at the clock, saying that he finds strictly regulated work boring. And there is always something to do. In winter his efforts are concentrated on his ice rink. He came from Brescia to Engadine 23 years ago as a simple mason, but in winter there is not a lot of building work to be done, so he used to watch over the shoulders of his predecessors as they worked on the ice rink and bobsleigh run. “Being an ice expert isn’t taught in schools.” Bera is keen to underline that he does not care for the rink prepared by machines, but manually. He believes this enables skaters to feel much closer to nature, when it gets colder or warmer. Every day is different.

Bera finds mechanically prepared ice rinks to be monotonous. He is proud of the compliments he receives for his ice, whose surface bears Bera’s trademark.

“When it gets colder I use more water. When it gets warmer I use less water, but sprinkle it more often.” At the start of the season it takes three weeks for the Kulm Hotel ice rink to be ready, but once it is, it has to be maintained every day.

It has to be as smooth as glass, which is hard physical work and involves being out on the ice at night in the bitter cold. “When I began as an ice expert the nights were much harsher than they are now. Back then the thermometer would sink to –35 °C,” Bera laughs. But this climate suits him, as does life in the mountains.

Bera’s duties in winter also include cleaning the access ways, clearing the ice from the paths and steps, and removing the snow from the roofs of the hotel and staff living quarters, to ensure that no one shall be harmed. That means plenty of work – looking out over the Kulm Park and visualising an area bigger than two football pitches, it is easy to see how the winter days’ tasks must seem endless. Giuseppe Bera also really enjoys direct contact with the hotel guests as he hands out loungers or hires out skates. “I’ve even met a number of VIPs in my time.” Bera tells with pride how he had his photograph taken with TV presenter Michelle Hunziker.

Followed by the family There have always been many Italians like Giuseppe Bera in the Upper Engadine.

Roland Weingart of the municipality of St. Moritz reports that there are currently 356 Italians aged between 16 and 65 registered as permanently resident in the town. “We estimate that more than 90 per cent of them are in employment.” There are also between 1200 and 1400 cross-border commuters, practically all of them from Italy, according to Weingart, who adds that the majority commute daily.

“I was the first of my family,” grins Giuseppe Bera, from Brescia. Two of his brothers also work in St. Moritz, also caring for winter ice – on the Cresta Run. Meanwhile, two of his sons have also come to work in the Engadine. On summer weekends or when there is little work to do, Bera makes the one-and-a-half hour journey home, back to his wife and third son. He is unable to say whether he feels more Italian or Swiss. “Theoretically I have now been in St. Moritz for long enough to apply for Swiss citizenship.” But that is only paper to him. What is more important is the heart – and his heart beats for his beloved Kulm Hotel.

GARAGENBIER Kleine regionale Produzenten können mit einem Nischenprodukt in einer globalisierten Welt Erfolg haben.

Ein Portrait der höchstgelegenen Brauerei der Schweiz.

– von Gallus Hufenus Unterhalb des Bahnhofs Pontresina zeigt Daniel Käslin stolz seine Biermanufaktur in einer ehemaligen Lastwagengarage. Der schmale, hohe Raum vermittelt auf den ersten Blick nicht unbedingt das Gefühl einer Brauerei. Dafür fehlen die kupferfarbenen Kessel. Doch dem Betrachter wird klar: Jenes Bild schaut für den Laien zwar typisch aus, doch in einem geschlossenen System funktioniert der Prozess meist automatisch. Hier aber kann jeder Schritt genau beobachtet werden. Das ist ehrliches Handwerk. Ohne Schnickschnack. Ein süsslicher, noch nicht herber, doch malziger Duft liegt in der Luft. Unverkennbar. Eben wurde das geschrotete Malz – selbstverständlich nach dem geheimen Hausrezept – mit reinem Bergwasser zur bräunlichen Maische vermischt und in einem Trog, der 145 Liter fasst, auf verschiedene Temperaturstufen erhitzt. Die Stärke im Malz wird in dieser Phase in Zucker umgewandelt.

Vom Balkon in die Garage Auch wenn Daniel Käslin heute einen Braumeister zu 100 Stellenprozenten beschäftigen kann – Hannes Gutschmidt, ein Kölner –, ist nach wie vor zu spüren, dass die Idee aus einem Hobby entstanden ist, einer persönlichen Leidenschaft: Ein Produkt mit Herz aus der kleinen Garage von nebenan. «Als ich den Getränkehandel meines Vaters übernommen hatte, wurde mir schnell klar, dass mir das Handwerkliche fehlte», erzählt der ursprünglich gelernte Zimmermann.

Also habe er daheim ausprobiert, Bier zu brauen. Bis die Rezeptur stand, dauerte es zwei Jahre. Da Käslin keinen Raum für die Produktion hatte und somit auf seinem Balkon experimentierte, konnte er dies lediglich in den Sommermonaten tun. Eine kurze Zeit, zumal Bier sechs Wochen braucht, bis es vollendet ist.

Gemeinsam mit «BierVision Monstein» bei Davos konnte der Engadiner im Jahr 2008 zum ersten Mal 1000 Liter seines naturtrüben und hellen «BerninaBiers» abfüllen. «Weil ich nur reines Bergwasser aus Pontresina verwenden wollte, musste ich zu Beginn dieses über den Flüelapass oder über Tiefencastel ins Landwassertal transportieren.» Der Grund: Bergwasser aus Pontresina ist seine wertvollste Zutat: Ein weiches Wasser. «Härte kann man zufügen, aber entziehen nicht.» Aufgrund der steigenden Nachfrage wurde schnell klar, dass sein Bier vor Ort produziert werden musste.

GARAGE BEER Small regional producers can still enjoy success in a globalised world with a niche product. This is a portrait of the highest-altitude brewery in Switzerland.

– by Gallus Hufenus Below the railway station of Pontresina, Daniel Käslin proudly shows us around his brewery in a former goods vehicle garage. The tall, narrow room doesn’t seem like a brewery at first glance, especially as it lacks the expected copper vessels. But the observer soon discovers that, while such vessels are part of the traditional image to the layman, in a closed system like that the process usually happens automatically. Here, however, each stage can be closely observed. This is real craftsmanship, with no bells and whistles. A sweet, almost bitter, yet malty smell hangs in the air – unmistakeable. The crushed malt – prepared according to a secret recipe, of course – has just been blended with pure mountain water to form the brown mash and heated through various temperature levels in a 145-litre vat. This is the phase in which the starches in the malt are converted into sugar.

From the balcony to the garage Although Daniel Käslin is now able to employ a full-time master brewer, Hannes Gutschmidt from Cologne, it is still apparent that his idea grew from a hobby, a personal passion – a product with soul from the small garage next door.

“When I took over my father’s drinks retailing business I soon realised that I was missing the element of craftsmanship,” says Käslin, who originally trained as a carpenter.

And so he began to experiment with brewing beer. It took two years for him to perfect his recipe. Since Käslin had no room to produce his beer, experimenting outside on his balcony, he was only able to do so in the summer months.

That only gave him a short time window, as beer takes six weeks until it is ready to drink.

It was in 2008 that the Engadine brewer, together with “BierVision Monstein” near Davos, first bottled 1000 litres of his naturally cloudy, light-coloured Bernina Bier. “I wanted to use only pure mountain water from Pontresina, so at first I had to bring it over the Flüela Pass or through Tiefencastel into the Landwasser valley.” This is because mountain water from Pontresina is his most valuable ingredient: soft water. “You can add hardness, but you can’t take it away.” As demand increased it soon became clear that his beer would have to be produced on location.

Gipfel auf die Etiketten Noch bevor der Standort gefunden war, beschaffte der Bierpionier sämtliche Elemente für eine Mikrobrauanlage. Im Dezember 2010 konnte das erste «Engadiner Bier» aus Pontresina ausgeliefert werden. Seither sind auch ein naturtrübes, bernsteinfarbenes Amberbier, das «Palü-Bier», ein leichtes Hefen-Weizenbier, das «Bellavista-Bier» und aktuell ein «Black Boval» entwickelt worden.

Alle Produkte tragen die Namen der Gipfel, die man von der Diavolezza, dem Hausberg Pontresinas, sieht. Ehrensache, dass jedes Bier auf den jeweiligen Gipfeln sozusagen «getauft» wurde.

Daniel Käslins Vater ist unter anderem auch Bergführer und die ganze Familie oft auf den Gletschern und Felsen unterwegs. Auch die Etiketten sind hausgemacht: «Ich habe das benannte Panorama fotografiert.» Und bis vor Kurzem wurde jede Flasche sogar einzeln von Hand etikettiert. Bei einer Produktionsmenge von heute rund 300 Hektolitern pro Jahr. «Manchmal kann ich heute sogar die Nachfrage kaum mehr stillen», schmunzelt der 37-Jährige. Genau in diesem Moment tauchen zwei Touristen auf und möchten zwei Harasse erwerben. Käslin vertröstet die Liebhaber auf den morgigen Tag – da werde wieder abgefüllt. Authentisch frisch eben. Exklusiv.

Mountain peaks on the labels Even before he had found a site for the brewery, pioneering Käslin made sure he had all the elements for his microbrewery in place. In December 2010 the first Engadiner Bier was shipped out of Pontresina. Since then, the naturally cloudy, amber-coloured Palü, a light-coloured wheat beer, the Bellavista, and recent addition Black Boval have been added to the range. All the products bear the names of mountain peaks that can be seen from Diavolezza, Pontresina’s local mountain. It goes without saying that each beer has had a “naming ceremony” on its eponymous summit.

Daniel Käslin’s father is a part-time mountain guide, and the whole family often goes out exploring the glaciers and rocky terrain. The labels, too, are homemade. “I photographed the panorama that encompasses all the peaks.”

Until recently the labels were even applied to each bottle by hand – for a production volume that now amounts to around 300 hectolitres per annum. “It’s reached a point where I’m sometimes hardly able to satisfy the demand,” the 37-year old brewer says with a smile. At that very moment two tourists appear, wanting to buy two crates. Käslin manages to put them off to the following day, when the next batch is due to be bottled. Authentic and fresh, exclusive.

Small is beautiful Microbreweries are currently enjoying great success in Switzerland. In a globalised world, people long for local specialities or a sense of history on their doorstep. Things that are distinctive, unique. “We are number 394 on the register of Swiss breweries. By now there are around 600 entries for beer producers in the country,” Käslin says. Compare this with only 34 breweries in 1985. This boom has been helped by the abolition of the beer cartel.

Between 1935 and 1991 there was an agreement between almost all of the Swiss breweries, which allowed them to exercise extensive control of the market. This may have

In einer globalisierten Welt sehnen sich Menschen nach der lokalen Spezialität, der Geschichte aus der Nachbarschaft. Dem Unverwechselbaren, Einzigartigen. «Im Brauereiregister tragen wir in der Schweiz die Nummer 394. Bis heute sind aber bereits rund 600 Bierproduzenten im Land eingetragen», weiss Käslin. Im Vergleich: 1985 waren es 34 Brauereien. Zu diesem Boom hat auch die Abschaffung des Bierkartells beigetragen: Zwischen 1935 und 1991 bestand eine Vereinbarung zwischen fast allen Schweizer Brauereien und erlaubte eine umfassende Marktregulierung, die zwar das einheimische Bier stärkte, aber hauptsächlich die grossen Produzenten in ihren jeweiligen Regionen begünstigte und kaum Mikrobetriebe überleben liess.

Heute kann derjenige, der die Nische findet, Erfolg haben. Neben dem Engadiner Bier ist dies in der Region auch die «Biera Engiadinaisa» aus Tschlin. «Allerdings», schmunzelt Daniel Käslin, «Leidenschaft und Rentabilität vertragen sich nicht in jedem Fall.» Der Bierbrauer ist froh, kann er auf sein zweites Standbein, den Getränkehandel, zählen und somit einfacher sein Produkt vertreiben.

Was aber Leidenschaft immer tut: Es erfreut das Herz und hat ihn auch schon auf eine Bier- bzw. Schnapsidee (aus dem übrigen Bier wird übrigens im Münstertal heute tatsächlich sogar ein Schnaps gebrannt) gebracht: Für ein Erinnerungsfoto schickte er sein Bier 74’745 Kilometer um die Welt. «Viva!»

Now anyone who finds the right niche can enjoy success. In this region, as well as the Engadiner Bier, there is also Biera Engiadinaisa from Tschlin. “It has to be said, however, that passion and profit don’t always go hand in hand,” grins Daniel Käslin. The brewer is glad that he has his beverage retail business to fall back on, as well as to make selling his own product easier. But passion is a strong driving force: it not only warms the heart, but has also inspired him to promote his latest beer and schnapps idea (the leftover beer is used to distil a type of schnapps in Val Müstair) by taking a 74,745 kilometre around-theworld trip with a Palü beer for a photo shoot. “Cheers!” www.engadinerbier.ch

ERFOLGSFORMEL Die 30 Luxusresidenzen des Hotels sowie 20 weitere an besten Lagen stossen seit einigen Jahren auf zunehmende Nach­ frage. Hoteldirektor Heinz E. Hunkeler verrät die Gründe dafür.

– von Thomas Veser Heinz Hunkeler, welchen Stellenwert haben Ihre 50 Residenzen für das Hotel?

Unsere Residenzen, die nun schon seit über 25 Jahren zum Hotelangebot gehören, stehen für Luxus und Exklusivität. Ihr Erfolg beruht auf der Tatsache, dass sich durch dieses Angebot Gäste angesprochen fühlen, die keine Ferienresidenz kaufen wollen, jedoch grossen Wert darauf legen, während der Mietdauer ihre Accessoires in den temporären eigenen vier Wänden lassen zu können.

Gleichzeitig nutzen die Mieter die kompletten Hotelangebote, darunter Zimmerreinigung, Roomservice und den Spa- & Wellnessbereich. Für das Hotel ist diese Formel inzwischen wirtschaftlich sehr wichtig geworden. Deswegen ist auch an einen Verkauf der Wohnungen nicht gedacht.

Können Sie einen Trend beobachten?

In der Tat. Auch in den letzten Jahren waren Ferienresidenzen sehr gefragt.

Unsere Kunden schätzen vor allem, dass sie ihre zwischen 80 und 350 Quadratmeter grossen und unmöblierten Residenzen innenarchitektonisch ganz nach eigenem Gusto gestalten und möblieren können. Dabei können sie ihrer Phantasie freien Lauf lassen. Residenzen bieten den Komfort, dass sie einem jederzeit zur Verfügung stehen und das zweite Zuhause darstellen.

Wie lange mieten sich die Kunden normalerweise bei Ihnen ein, gibt es bereits einen Rekord?

Wir haben einige Mieter, die ihren Apartments schon seit Beginn an die Treue halten. Die meisten Mieter wählen aber auch erfahrungsgemäss eine langfristige Vertragsdauer, da sie sich bei uns sehr wohl fühlen und den unkomplizierten Komfort schätzen.

Residenzbewohner haben bisweilen Sonderwünsche. Können Sie sich an die bisher ungewöhnlichsten erinnern?

Ich erinnere mich sehr lebhaft an zwei Bewohner, die für die Gestaltung ihrer nebeneinanderliegenden und gleich grossen Residenzen namhafte Innenarchitekten verpflichteten. Während sich der eine Mieter eine postmoderne, ziemlich abstrakt wirkende Residenz zulegte, liess der andere das Wohnungsinnere im Gebirgsstil nach Art eines Chalets mit viel Holz gestalten. Einen grösseren Kontrast hätte man sich gar nicht vorstellen können. Wie dem auch sei, am Ende der Mietperiode waren beide Mieter veranlasst, vertragsgemäss den ursprünglichen Zustand der Residenzen wieder herzustellen …

FORMULA FOR SUCCESS The hotel’s 30 holiday residences, and 20 more in prime locations around St. Moritz, have experienced increasing demand for several years now. General Manager Heinz E. Hunkeler tells us why. –

Heinz E. Hunkeler, what value do your 50 holiday residences have for the hotel?

Our residences, which have been part of the hotel offering for more than 25 years now, are the epitome of luxury and exclusivity. They are particularly popular with guests who do not want to buy their own holiday home, but set great store in being able to house their belongings within their own four walls for the length of their tenancy. Residence tenants are also able to enjoy all the hotel’s services, including cleaning and in-room meals, and facilities, such as the spa and wellness suite. The residences are economically very important for the Kulm, which is why we would not consider selling them.

Have you observed a trend?

I certainly have – demand for holiday residences has increased markedly in recent years. Our customers particularly value the freedom to exercise their own taste in the interior design and furnishing of their residences, which are let unfurnished and vary from 80 to 350 square meters in size. They can give free rein to their imaginations. Our residences offer the comfort of always being available – a second home to our guests.

How long do your customers usually rent the residence for? Is there a record?

We have some tenants who have kept their apartments from the very beginning, so over 25 years. Not all the rental agreements are that long, but most tenants do take out a long-term rental contract, because they feel comfortable and appreciate our uncomplicated service.

Residence occupants sometimes have special wishes.

What are the strangest that you remember?

I have a very vivid memory of two residents who each appointed famous interior designers for their adjacent, identically sized residences. While one tenant went for a post-modern, fairly abstract interior, the other chose a design that echoed the Alpine style of a chalet with lots of wood. It would be impossible to imagine a more marked contrast between the two. Be that as it may, at the end of their rental agreement, both tenants were asked to restore their residences to the original condition in accordance with the contract …

St. Moritz Music Summit Electronic dance music high up in the mountains? You might shake your head in bemusement at the idea, but St. Moritz has proved that the international DJ elite have no fear of heights, happily working their decks at altitudes of up to 2,500 meters.

In 2016, the world’s most famous DJs will once again be pumping up the volume to enable dance enthusiasts to spend a weekend partying with like-minded people.

Well-known club brands, such as Ministry of Sound and Pacha, will be headlining the St. Moritz Music Summit from 16 to 20 March 2016, taking their audiences to new music highs.

– von Thomas Veser Kein ausländischer Hersteller von Skisportartikeln unterhielt von Anfang an innigere Beziehungen zur Schweiz als das 1950 gegründete US-Unternehmen HEAD Ski COMPANY, INC. Firmengründer Howard Head hatte zuvor mit Walter Haensli, prominenter Skilehrer und Olympiatrainer der amerikanischen Alpin-Equipe 1948 in St. Moritz, den ersten Metallbau-Ski ersonnen.

No foreign ski sports equipment manufacturer has had closer relations with Switzerland right from the start than the HEAD Ski Company, Inc., which was established in 1950 in the US. The company’s founder, Howard Head, created the first metal skis together with Walter Haensli, a prominent ski instructor and trainer of the 1948 American winter Olympics team in St. Moritz.

Greater brand recognition It is no surprise that the renowned company entered into a partnership with the Kulm Hotel. “We accepted the proposal with great pleasure,” says Lucio Zallot, General Manager of HEAD Switzerland, Inc. “This magnificent five-star hotel is a great help to us in giving the brand an even better image.” The hotel’s in-house Ender Sport shop now offers guests a range of 120 up-to-the-minute HEAD products to test, which are used by the international ski elite, including Lindsey Vonn, Ted Ligety and Didier Cuche.

ENJOY St. Moritz TV Filippo Giani, Sie sind der Initiant des neuen Kommunikationstool «Enjoy St. Moritz» – eine multimediale Plattform, die kulturelle Ereignisse in der Region bündelt.

Wie kamen Sie auf die Idee?

Nachdem ich im Tessin ein Newsportal betreute, zog ich 2011 nach St. Moritz und gründete die ibexmedia – ein Multimediaproduzent. Mir war klar, dass Videos wohl vom jeweiligen Zielpublikum konsumiert wurden, es fehlte aber eine Plattform, welche die Angebote zusammenbrachte: Ein Besucher des White Turfs kann sich auch für Bob interessieren. Nachdem ich zwei Jahre lang Sponsoren suchte, lernte ich Heinz E. Hunkeler kennen. Er war von der Idee rasch begeistert und stellte mir unkompliziert die Räumlichkeiten mit entsprechender Infrastruktur für meine Produktion im Keller des Ur-Kulms zur Verfügung.

Die medienübergreifende Plattform kann auf dem Fernsehen des Kulm Hotel und Grand Hotel Kronenhof gesehen werden – es sind die ersten Hotels, die Web 2.0-Channels aufgegleist haben. Zu sehen ist der Kanal zudem auf Ihrer Webseite sowie auf Social-Media-Plattformen. Haben Sie einen Überblick über die Nutzerinnen und Nutzer?

Es sind rund 100’000 Personen, die sich auf 136 Nationen verteilen, wovon circa 80 Prozent der Zugriffe aus der Schweiz stammen – vor allem aus Graubünden und Zürich. Und wir erleiden in der Zwischensaison keinen Einbruch der Zahlen.

Das zeigt, dass wir bereits in den Köpfen der Einheimischen verankert sind.

Diese Verankerung zeigt sich auch bei den Macherinnen und Machern …

Sehr. Viele Freiwillige wollen in ihrer Freizeit TV machen. Das Resultat ist zwar nicht immer hochprofessionell, aber etwas Naivität gibt dem Produkt seine Ehrlichkeit. Diese spontane Lust kontrastiert die Champagnerluft der Destination wunderbar.

Gibt es neben der elektronischen Agenda auch journalistisch aufbereitete Inhalte?

Wir betreiben ein Newsportal mit «positiven» Nachrichten – ausser bei den Verkehrsnachrichten. Weil es den Gast genauso interessieren muss wie den Einheimischen, verzichten wir auf Wirtschaft oder Politik. Was besonders gefällt, sind Hintergrundberichte wie etwa ein Blick über die Schultern des Chefkochs.

Sie möchten, dass Ihr Kanal ein einheimisches Produkt ist und bleibt. Wie schaffen Sie den Spagat zwischen Inhalten für Gäste und Einheimische?

Dieses Publikum eben nicht zu trennen. Auf Enjoy St. Moritz sind zwar auch Imagevideos zu sehen, ohne Worte, nur mit Hintergrundmusik – das ist attraktiver, als einfache Aufnahmen zu zeigen. Doch das Porträt jenes Mannes, der seit 30 Jahren die Dicke des Eises auf dem St. Moritzersee für den White Turf misst, interessiert den Gast gleichermassen wie seine Nachbarn im Dorf.

Primär liegt der Fokus auf der Eventkultur. Gibt es auch Inhalte zur Alltagskultur?

Diesen Bereich möchte ich gerne ausbauen. Dazu fehlen uns leider noch mehr Sponsoren. Nichtsdestotrotz berichten wir zum Beispiel über den «Chalandamarz». Doch um mehr Reportagen zu erstellen, müsste ich mir ein grösseres Team leisten können.

ENJOY St. Moritz TV Filippo Giani, you are the man behind “Enjoy St. Moritz”, a multimedia platform that brings together the region’s cultural events. What inspired your idea?

After being responsible for a news portal in Ticino, in 2011 I moved to St. Moritz, where I founded Ibexmedia, a multimedia producer. I could see that videos were consumed by a specific target audience, but there was no platform to bring the various products together. A visitor to the White Turf races might also be interested in bobsleigh. After a two-year search for sponsors, I met Heinz E. Hunkeler. He was immediately taken by the idea and let me use the premises I needed, with all the necessary infrastructure, in the cellar of the Old Kulm.

This cross-media platform can be watched on the TV screens in the Kulm Hotel and Grand Hotel Kronenhof, on your website and on social media platforms. Do you have an overview of the users?

The audience consists of around 100,000 people, spread over 136 countries, with around 80 per cent of the views originating in Switzerland, especially the cantons of Graubünden and Zurich. We don’t see a significant drop in our figures in the low season, which shows that we have become deeply rooted among the locals.

You also enjoy a similar loyalty among video makers...

We certainly do. There are many volunteers who spend their free time making TV programmes. The results are not always the most professional, but a certain naivety gives the product a genuine feel. This spontaneous enthusiasm makes a wonderful contrast to the champagne image of the resort.

Alongside the electronic agenda, do you also use journalistic content?

We have a news portal with “positive” news – apart from the traffic reports. Because the content has to be as interesting for guests as it is for locals, we stay away from business and politics. People particularly enjoy watching behind-the-scenes reports such as watching a chef at work.

You want your channel to be and remain a local product.

How do you bridge the gap between content for guests and locals?

Precisely by not distinguishing our audience. Enjoy St. Moritz also shows image videos without words, only background music. But, for example, a portrait of the man who for the last 30 years has been responsible for measuring the thickness of the ice on Lake St. Moritz for the White Turf is equally interesting both to guests and his neighbours in the village.

The main focus is on special events. Do you also show content relating to everyday local culture?

I would like to expand this area, but unfortunately we would need more sponsors to do so. However we report on traditions such as the Chalandamarz festival, for example. But in order to produce more reports I would need to be able to call on a bigger team.

Wie vermeiden Sie, dass das Programm zu PR-lastig wird?

Wir machen kein «Verkaufs-TV». Die neue Kollektion in der Kleiderboutique interessiert uns nicht. Wenn mir aber ein Initiant einer neuen Spezialitätenbar schildern kann, wo er die Leidenschaft für seine Idee entdeckte und beim Erzählen seine Augen leuchten, dann wird aus einem plumpen Werbespot eine packende Story. Wir müssten Geschichten erzählen können.

Social Media bieten auch die Möglichkeit zur Interaktion. Sind auch Publikumsbeiträge möglich?

Es ist möglich. Aber das passiert bei 100’000 Usern selten. Bei Interaktionen interessiert mich vor allem, wie und welche Inhalte geteilt werden.

Hauptsponsoren sind u. a. das Kulm Hotel und das Grand Hotel Kronenhof in Pontresina, zu sehen ist auch die Rubrik Kulm @ Work, Hintergrundgeschichten aus dem Hotel. Laufen Sie da nicht Gefahr, die journalistische Neutralität zu verlieren, den Blick für das Ganze?

Diese Angst habe ich nicht. Auch Heinz E. Hunkeler verliert nie den Blick für das Ganze. Er weiss, dass das Zielpublikum wichtig und eine eigene Nabelschau langweilig ist. Andere renommierte 5-Sterne-Hotels sollen darum explizit mitmachen können. Enjoy St. Moritz ist eine offene Plattform, und ich arbeite unabhängig.

Enjoy St. Moritz gibt es seit rund einem Jahr. Gibt es schon erste persönliche Highlights?

Dass ich seit einem Jahr kaum mehr geschlafen habe (lacht)... Wir verzeichneten bis anhin 1’000’000 Clicks. Viele Videos sind mir in Erinnerung geblieben, speziell die Kulm @ Work-Aufnahmen. Positiv ist für mich aber auch, dass in kurzer Zeit viele Menschen Enjoy St. Moritz in ihren Alltag integriert haben. Die Engadiner sind offen für Ideen von aussen – wie von mir, einem Tessiner.

Haben Sie konkrete Vorstellungen, wie sich die Plattform weiterentwickeln soll?

Ich hoffe, dass wir von der Destination und Gemeinde St. Moritz noch mehr Support erhalten. Und ein Wunsch ist, dass wir auf dem Netz von «Swisscom TV» in der ganzen Schweiz integriert werden. Das würde die Distribution enorm vereinfachen.

Zum Schluss: Eine Rubrik sind auch Tipps von Einheimischen. Was ist Ihrer?

Im Winter: Eine Abfahrt im Bob und ein schöner Abend in der Sunny Bar. Im Sommer: Auf Muottas Muragl ein Konzert im Rahmen des Festival da Jazz geniessen und bis zur Segantinihütte wandern. www.enjoystmoritz.ch

How do you prevent programmes from becoming too PR-focused?

We don’t produce “TV shopping” programmes. We’re not interested in the latest collections in the fashion boutiques. But if the founder of a speciality bar were to come and tell me what triggered the passion behind his idea, his eyes lighting up as he talked to me, that would mean making a story out of a blunt advert. We have to be able to tell stories.

Social media also presents the opportunity for interaction.

Do you get contributions from the public?

It can happen. But it’s a rare event, even with 100,000 users. With interactions I’m particularly interested in what content is shared, and how.

Your main sponsors include the Kulm Hotel and the Grand Hotel Kronenhof in Pontresina. You also have the series Kulm @ Work, behind-the-scenes stories from around the hotel. Does this not mean that you risk losing journalistic objectivity, a view of the big picture?

I’m not afraid of that happening. Heinz E. Hunkeler himself never loses sight of the big picture. He knows that the target audience is important and that self-centred navel gazing is boring. Other 5-star hotels in St. Moritz should therefore be able to participate. Enjoy St. Moritz is an open platform and I’m an independent operator.

Enjoy St. Moritz has been on air for around a year. What have been your personal highlights so far?

The fact that I’ve gone a year with hardly any sleep... (laughs). We just have reached one million clicks. Many videos have been exciting to produce, for example the Kulm @ Work episodes. It’s been a great pleasure for me to see Enjoy St. Moritz becoming an integral part of so many people’s everyday lives. The people of Engadine are open to ideas from outside – including from me, a man from Ticino.

Do you have any specific ideas for the future development of the platform?

I hope we will receive even more support from the destination and municipality of St. Moritz. And I would love us to be integrated into national Swiss broadcasting on the “Swisscom TV” network. That would simplify distribution enormously.

Im Sommer 2015 eröffnet, bietet der Weg faszinierende Einblicke in die Erdgeschichte des Berninamassivs. Vom Bahnhof Morteratsch aus dauert die Wanderung, welche in den Sommermonaten vorgenommen werden kann, eine knappe Stunde. Sie führt vorbei an 16 Haltepunkten mit Informationen über den drittlängsten Gletscher der Ostalpen im Gebiet der zum Unesco-Welterbe erhobenen Albula- und Berninabahn. Vor allem bei der Bergstation Diavolezza bietet sich ein atemberaubendes Panorama auf das Massiv.

Pers- und Morteratsch-Gletscher gleichen zwei gigantischen Eiszungen, die sich von den schneebedeckten Gipfeln des Piz Palü und des Piz Bernina in Richtung Pontresina erstrecken. Die Gletscherarme vereinigen sich bei der Isla Persa zu einer langen Eisfläche. Noch zu Beginn des vorigen Jahrhunderts erstreckte sie sich fast zwei Kilometer weiter ins Tal. Auf anschauliche Weise vermittelt der Themenweg die Gründe für das anhaltende Zurückweichen des Gletschers.

Wie die Natur die Landschaft formte Das tiefer liegende Puschlav/Valposchiavo, in dem auf einer Länge von 25 Kilometern alle Schweizer Klimazonen vertreten sind, wartet mit einer weiteren Attraktion auf: Bei Cavaglia kann man anhand eiszeitlicher Gletschermühlen nachvollziehen, wie kraftvoll die Natur im Laufe der Jahrtausende die Landschaft modelliert hat. Staunend steht man vor den spiralwandigen Hohlformen, die das abfliessende Schmelzwasser geschaffen hat.

Vor 15 Jahren hatte ein örtlicher Verein mit der Gestaltung des «Gletschermühlengartens» begonnen. Man entfernte viele Tonnen Gesteinstrümmer und hat das Terrain inzwischen für Besuche in den Sommermonaten, von Mai bis Oktober, professionell gesichert.

Opened last summer, the trail gives some fascinating insights into the geological history of the Bernina massif. Starting at the Morterartsch station, the trail takes about an hour, passing 16 information boards that describe the thirdlongest glacier in the Eastern Alps, in the area of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Rhaetian Railway Albula/Bernina. There is a particularly breathtaking view over the massif from the Diavolezza mountain station.

The Pers and Morterartsch glaciers are like two gigantic tongues of ice stretching down towards Pontresina from the snow-covered summits of the Piz Palü and the Piz Bernina. The two arms of the glacier come together to form a long ice sheet below the Isla Persa. At the start of the last century it extended for almost two kilometres further down into the valley. The themed walk provides visual explanations for the steady retreat of the glacier.

How nature formed the landscape The lower-lying Val Poschiavo/Puschlav, in which all the Swiss climate zones are represented in a single 25-kilometre stretch, is home to a further attraction: at Cavaglia, glacier mills dating back to the ice age demonstrate the forceful way in which nature has shaped the landscape over the millennia. It is amazing to contemplate these spiral-shaped hollow formations created by the run-off of meltwater.

by Luca Pancrazzi titled «Occidente Esotico». The subject of his new paintings done in the last year and a half are the Engadin mountains and landscapes.

Luca Pancrazzi is foremost an observer. He distills his impressions in restrained yet complex paintings, built up through innumerable tones of white. Through this process, he uncovers the most subtle gradations of light and shadow, and, in so doing, invites viewers to reconnect with the seductive act of looking. In Pancrazzi’s most recent series of paintings, the artist turns his inward gaze to the vast Engadin Mountains, a new subject matter which nevertheless seems to be a complete synthesis of his singular painting technique and contemplative manner.

They are home to the gods and wild creatures, the spiritual retreat of hermits and the mysterious peaks scaled only by the most adventurous mountaineers. From any point of view, mountains instill a sense of deep isolation; from the valley looking up, the mountain represents an expanse that can never be fully comprehended, while from the summit looking down, we experience a unique distancing of the self, allowing us to view the world we inhabit as a large system of which we are only tiny parts.

Images of mountains are highly speculative ones, evoking a primal sense of fantasy and the unknown. Across depictions in literature and art, mountains inspire sensations of fascination and extreme beauty, yet they also fill us with

also reflects the experience of Pancrazzi’s canvases. The compositions focus the eye on various fragments of the Engadin valley — rock formations, clusters of lakes, remote villages — in a layered language that emphasizes the morphology of masses and shadows. The large scale of the paintings enables a coexistence of realism and abstraction; the images remain coherent from a distance but reveal, upon closer examination, a distinctive semi-pointillist texture of brushstrokes. The white paintings are suffused with brightness, they seem to flicker in and out of focus and the landscape appears almost as a mirage. In one of the compositions, a band of mist sweeps through the middle of the canvas.

This reminds us of the looming threat always present in these areas, where obfuscating elements — such as fog, steam, bright light and haze — envelop the peaks and ridges and disorient the sense of place completely.

This sense of mystery, of perceiving the unseen, is paramount to Pancrazzi’s work. Much of the raw allure present in mountainous landscapes has inevitably dissipated with the easy access of satellite imagery. The notions of exploration and surrender so intertwined with the experience of remote landscapes are casually displaced by the proliferation of images, and the ease of merely dropping a pin to find oneself in the midst of these far-away settings. In opposition to this, Pancrazzi proposes we slow down and look for the subtle shifts in color, light and texture. In a context where few things remain foreign or truly mysterious, Pancrazzi proposes that the only way to return to a sense of wonder is to destabilize our position as viewers by the practice of close, transformative looking.

Jeder Stein atmet Geschichte. Sie erzählen von Adligen, Zunftmeistern, Handwerkern und Kaufleuten. Der Name erweist Referenz an die Vergangenheit: Die «Zunft zum Widder», die der Gilde der Metzger entspricht und seit 1401 an der Widdergasse ansässig ist, trifft sich heute noch während des traditionellen Sechseläutens im Saal des Boutique Hotels.

Das Widder Hotel ist aber kein Museum. Im Gegenteil: Zeit wird zeitlos. Menschen hinterlassen seit 700 Jahren ihre Spuren in den neun Häusern am Rennweg, die 1995 dank Stararchitektin Tilla Theus zu einem der schönsten Stadthotels der Schweiz wurden. Dieses Gesamtkunstwerk über die Jahrhunderte steht im Zentrum. Nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Das Feuer der Geschichte lebt weiter, doch es wird keine Asche angebetet. Neues hat dabei, wo technisch nötig und künstlerisch sinnvoll, selbstverständlich Platz. Als Beispiel sei ein durchdachtes Extra erwähnt – sensorische Nachtlichter, die nachts den Weg zum Schlaf- und Badezimmer weisen, sodass der Partner nicht durch eine Nachttischlampe gestört werden muss... Hier locken 49 individuell gestaltete Gästezimmer und Suiten. Every stone breathes history, telling of aristocrats, guildmasters, craftsmen and merchants. The name itself is a reference to the past: the “Guild of the Ram” was the butchers’ guild, which has had its headquarters in the Widdergasse (Ram Alley) since 1401, and which still meets during the Swiss Sechseläuten festival in the boutique hotel’s ball room.

But the Widder Hotel is no museum. On the contrary, it is ageless and timeless. People have been leaving their mark for 700 years on these nine houses on Rennweg, which were renovated and converted into one of Switzerland’s most beautiful city hotels in 1995 by top architect Tilla Theus. This collective work of art, spanning centuries, is the hotel’s heart – no more and no less. It is no mere relic, but the fire of living history. A POPULAR FESTIVAL Although only in its second year, Night Turf, horse racing held on the frozen Lake St. Moritz once the sun has gone down, is already establishing itself as one of the most popular sporting events in the Engadine.

Night Turf triggered waves of enthusiasm on its inaugural outing, attracting well over 5,000 people in 2015. Last year’s highlight was undoubtedly the huge party held in the public marquee, which was supported by the Kulm Hotel and Grand Hotel Kronenhof; it has gone down in the resort’s annals as a night to be remembered and it is hoped that this year’s event will be even more successful.

Visitors will be dazzled by a visual spectacle with a “Light and Fire” theme. And, of course, there will be plenty of culinary highlights provided by the Grand Hotels Kulm and Kronenhof, as well as musical treats and entertaining surprises.

Schon 2015 hatte das nächtliche Ereignis über 5000 Gäste angezogen und wahre Begeisterungsstürme ausgelöst. Als grandioser Höhepunkt war im Vorjahr die im grossen Veranstaltungszelt von und mit dem Kulm und Kronenhof inszenierte Grossparty in die Annalen des Weltkurortes eingegangen. An diesen Erfolg will man in diesem Winter erneut anknüpfen. Zudem können sich die Gäste auf ein optisches Spektakel zum Thema «Licht und Feuer» freuen. Kulinarische Highlights durch die beiden Grand Hotels Kulm und Kronenhof, musikalische Akzente und überraschende Einlagen dürfen natürlich nicht fehlen.

Aus nächster Nähe können Besucherinnen und Besucher dem spannenden Wettbewerb zwischen erfahrenen Reitern und edlen Rennpferden beiwohnen.

Wer will, kann sein Glück wagen und wetten, wenn das gesamte Rennoval in Kunstlicht getaucht wird, weil das für ein offizielles Pferderennen mit Wett­ betrieb nötig ist.

Visitors can get up close to the exciting races, which feature experienced jockeys and thoroughbred horses.

Those who are feeling lucky can even place bets, when the whole racetrack will be floodlit, a statutory requirement for an official horse racing event with betting.

Free entrance As last year, entry to the frozen lake, the public marquees and the stands is free, ensuring that this spectacular event is well on its way to becoming an established feature on the local calendar.
