Das Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz ist eine internationale Internatsschule mit viel Tradition. Sie verkörpert bewusst den einmaligen Geist des Engadins. Und bescherte dem Tal kürzlich ein architektonisches Juwel.

The Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz is an international boarding school with a lot of tradition. It consciously embodies the unique spirit of the Engadin. It also recently presented the valley with an architectural jewel.

Stolz thront das terrakottafarbene Jugendstilgebäude aus 1913 von Nikolaus Hartmann über dem Tal, die goldenen Zeiger der Uhr glitzern in der Sonne. Wer ankommt, spürt nach wie vor ein wenig, dass zur Gründung des «Institut Engiadina» um 1904 das Internat als «dort draussen» wahrgenommen wurde, oberhalb des Dorfs Zuoz. Ins Leben gerufen von Engadinern, welche die Zeichen der Zeit erkannten und mit der zunehmenden Mobilität und dem Tourismus ein Bildungsangebot für Jugendliche aus der ganzen Welt schufen.

Teil des Dorfs Schon damals funktionierte das Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz als Aktiengesellschaft. Von Beginn an war die Mittelschule ein Geschäftsmodell. «Doch heute ist das Lyceum längst Teil vom Dorf», sagt Schuldirektor Beat Sommer: Auch dank der rund hundert Jugendlichen aus der Region im Externat, das wie die anderen Mittelschulen im Kanton öffentliche Gelder pro Schülerin und Schüler bekommt. «Bei uns drückt der Spross eines Industriellen aus Deutschland zusammen mit dem Handwerkersohn aus dem Dorf die Schulbank.» Aber auch das neue Schultheater, das «Zuoz Globe» (siehe Box), steht allen Kulturschaffenden offen.

Die restlichen zweihundert Schülerinnen und Schüler kommen aus rund dreissig verschiedenen Nationen. Das prägt den liberalen Geist von «Weltoffenheit, Toleranz, Respekt, Fairplay, Leistungswille und einer lebenslangen Lernbereitschaft». Neben der staatlichen Schweizer Matura bietet das Lyceum das deutsche Abitur sowie das «International Baccalaureate» an. Für die Schulleitung ist zudem wichtig, sich weltweit noch breiter zu positionieren.

«Dadurch werden wir unabhängig von demografischen Entwicklungen oder politischen Situationen in einzelnen Staaten.» Vor allem in asiatischen und lateinamerikanischen Ländern möchte sich das Lyceum noch mehr etablieren.

Hogwarts vom Engadin Der 54-Jährige «Head of School» Beat Sommer möchte seine Schule im «Jetzt» für die Gegenwart und die Zukunft führen. Trotzdem sei vieles der ursprünglichen Wertehaltung noch präsent: Zwar ist die Schule längst keine reine Knabenschule mehr, die Sommers haben zu Beginn der 1990er Jahre das Mädcheninternat eingeführt. Allerdings gibt es immer noch die «Formal Dinners», und das Frühstück wird nach wie vor mit einem Gongschlag eröffnet.

Those arriving can still experience a little of the feeling that, at the founding of the «Institut Engiadina» around 1904, the boarding school was perceived as «out there», above the village of Zuoz. Initiated by residents of the Engadin who recognised the signs of the times and, with increasing mobility and tourism, created an educational offering for young people from around the world.

The grammar school was a business model from the start. «However, today the Lyceum is part of the village», says school director Beat Sommer: also thanks to the around one hundred young day pupils from the region, which means that, like the other grammar schools in the canton, the Lyceum receives public funds for each pupil. «Here the scion of a German industrialist goes to school with the tradesman‘s son from the village.» The new school theatre, the «Zuoz Globe» (see box), is also open to all creative artists.

The remaining two hundred pupils come from around thirty different countries. That defines the liberal spirit of «open-mindedness, tolerance, respect, fair play, the will to excellence and a lifelong willingness to learn». In addition to the state approved Swiss Matura (general qualification for university entrance), the Lyceum offers the German Abitur (school-leaving examination) and the «International Baccalaureate». For the school administration it is also important to position the school even more broadly worldwide. «In this way we gain independence from demographic developments or political situations in individual countries.» The Lyceum particularly wishes to establish itself more firmly in Asian and Latin American countries.

Hogwarts of the Engadin The 54-year old «Head of School», Beat Sommer, would «now» like to lead his school for the present and the future. Nonetheless, many of the original values are still present: it has been a long time since the school was purely a boys‘ school; the Sommers launched the girls‘ boarding school at the start of the 1990‘s. Nonetheless, there are still the «Formal Dinners», and breakfast is still announced with a gong. To the present day there are also three «houses» – Helvetia, Teutonia and Orania. Prior to the Second World War, it was mainly Swiss, Germans and Dutch who attended the Lyceum Alpinum. The three houses formed accordingly. During the school year they compete against each other in so-called «house matches» and collect points. On a walk through the venerable, light-flooded school corridors, and looking at the three house coats of arms, one thinks immediately of Harry Potter‘s school of magic Hogwarts.

«Apart from that, we can support the young people here comprehensively.

The pupils are also permanently supported during their leisure time», says Sommer. Especially with regard to the consumption of drugs, the Lyceum enforces a zero tolerance policy. The rules are clearly defined. Like back then, far away from the big cities, in intact nature. As a private institution, the Lyceum is also not bound to a sluggish state apparatus, although the cantonal curriculum of

Teutonia und Orania: Vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg besuchten vor allem Schweizer, Deutsche und Holländer das Lyceum Alpinum. Entsprechend bildeten sich die drei Häuser, die während des Schuljahres an sogenannten «Housematches» gegeneinander antreten und Punkte sammeln. Beim Spaziergang durch die altehrwürdigen, lichterfüllten Schulgänge und beim Anblick der drei Häuserwappen denkt man sofort an Harry Potters Zauberschule Hogwarts.

«Abgesehen davon können wir die Jugendlichen hier umfassend begleiten.

Im Internat sind die Lernenden auch in ihrer Freizeit permanent betreut», sagt Sommer. Gerade was Drogenkonsum betrifft, gilt am Lyceum eine Nulltoleranz.

Die Regeln sind klar definiert. Wie damals, fernab der grossen Städte, in intakter Natur. Zudem ist das Lyceum als private Institution nicht an einen trägen Staatsapparat gebunden, auch wenn der kantonale Lehrplan selbstverständlich seine Gültigkeit hat. Nach all diesen Ausführungen wird klar: Das Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz ist eine Lebensschule. Teils leben die Lernenden hier bis zu acht Jahren während einer wichtigen Entwicklungsphase ihrer Jugend. Das prägt, formt und hinterlässt Spuren: Weltweit zählt der Ehemaligenverein rund 3‘000 Mitglieder. Viele davon treffen sich zweimal im Jahr in Zuoz zu den «Summerand Wintergames», wo unter anderem Cricket gespielt wird – ganz nach englischem Vorbild.

Sport und Musik Schliesslich möchte das Lyceum intensiv die sportlichen und musischen Seiten der Jugendlichen fördern. Der Sport hat einen sehr hohen Stellenwert. Beat Sommer ist überzeugt von «Mens sana in corpore sano». Oder seit acht Jahren besteht unter anderem die Shakespeare Company, die jährlich einen Klassiker des grossen Dramatikers, Lyrikers und Schauspielers aufführt. Hier arbeitet die Schule mit Giovanni Netzer (Origen Festival Cultural, Burg Riom) zusammen.

Der Regisseur, Autor und Intendant wurde unter anderem 2007 mit dem HansReinhart-Ring ausgezeichnet, der höchsten Ehrung des Theaterlebens in der Schweiz.

«Ich bin überzeugt, dass all diese Aktivitäten den Jungen helfen, ein kompletterer Mensch zu werden. Die Jugendlichen lernen, wie sie mit Niederlagen umgehen können, sie denken vernetzter. Und dank des Umgangs mit verschiedenen Kulturen und Menschen erleben sie, was Solidarität ist.» – Werte, die für Schuldirektor Sommer in unserer heutigen Gesellschaft oft zu kurz kommen.

Vielleicht ist hier das Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz also auch etwas Querdenker und Freigeist.

Das Zuoz Globe: ein architektonisches Juwel «Die ganze Welt ist eine Bühne», steht im Vordach des 2011 eröffneten Zuoz Globe eingraviert. Kühn ragt das Portal ins Tal. Eine architektonische Perle des Büros «gasser, derungs». Die ehrliche Holzkonstruktion schmiegt sich ganz natürlich in die älteste Bausubstanz und wurde einfach und doch raffiniert ins ehemalige Schwimmbad des Lyceum Alpinum eingebaut. Die Bühne umfasst 30 Quadratmeter, die Zuschauer sitzen auf den 99 Plätzen so, dass sie Teil des Geschehens sind. Neben der Shakespeare Company wird das Zuoz Globe auch für andere, ausserschulische Kulturdarbietungen oder Veranstaltungen genutzt.

Some of the pupils live here for up to eight years during an important phase of development in their youth. That characterises, shapes and leaves traces: the alumni association numbers around 3,000 members worldwide. Many of these meet twice a year in Zuoz for the «Summer and Winter Games», at which, among other things, cricket is played entirely in keeping with the English model.

Sport and music Finally, the Lyceum strives intensively to promote the athletic and musical facets of the young people. Sport plays a very important role. Beat Sommer is a true believer in «Mens sana in corpore sano». Or, among other things, the Shakespeare Company has existed for the last eight years. It performs a classic piece of the great playwright, lyric poet and actor each year. Here the school works with Giovanni Netzer (Origen Festival Cultural, Burg Riom). The director, author and artistic director was distinguished with, among other awards, the Hans Reinhart Ring in 2007, the highest honour for theatre in Switzerland.

«I am convinced that all these activities help the young person to become a more complete person. The young people learn to deal with setbacks. They think in combination more. And thanks to dealings with various cultures and people, they find out what solidarity is.» Values that, according to school director Sommer, often come up short in our modern society. Maybe this means that the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz is also a kind of maverick and free spirit in this regard.

The Zuoz Globe: an architectural jewel «All the world is a stage», is engraved in the porch of the Zuoz Globe, which was opened in 2011. The portal juts boldly into the valley. An architectural pearl from the agency «gasser, derungs». The honest wooden design nestles entirely naturally into the oldest structure and was simply and yet cleverly integrated into the former swimming pool of the Lyceum Alpinum.

The stage is 30 square metres in size; the audience is seated on 99 seats in such a way that it is part of the action. In addition to the Shakespeare Company, the Zuoz Globe is also used for other, extracurricular cultural performances or events.

PFERDEFLÜSTERIN Die bald 120-jährige Kronenhof-Kutsche ist aus dem Dornröschenschlaf erwacht.

Sie wurde von Fachleuten restauriert. Seit letztem Sommer erstrahlt sie in neuem Glanz und ist wieder funktionstauglich.

Ihr Puls sei hoch gewesen vergangenen Frühling. Damals brach Helene Riedberger zum ersten Mal zur Testfahrt mit der frisch restaurierten Kronenhof-Kutsche auf. Was für ein erhabenes Gefühl, auf den sanft schwankenden Glaslandauer von 1897 steigen zu dürfen. «Ich war dermassen nervös, die Gefühle überschlugen sich», schwärmt die vollberufliche Kutscherin. Als sie vom Grand Hotel Kronenhof angefragt wurde, ob sie mit der Hotelkutsche die Gäste ausfahren wolle, musste sie keine Sekunde überlegen. «Das ist, wie wenn man einen Rolls-Royce fahren darf.» Ehrfürchtig, fast ein wenig, als wäre es ihre eigene, streicht die Engadinerin über die Kutsche, die nach rund 25 Jahren als «blosses» Dekorationsobjekt jetzt endlich wieder gefahren werden kann und nicht mehr bei Wind, Schnee und Regen vor dem Hoteleingang ausharren muss.

Das grüne Leder riecht noch neu, der schwarze Lack wurde eben frisch poliert. Die Mitarbeitenden sind sichtlich stolz auf «ihr» neues Gefährt. Und das Beste: Die Kutscherin hat den Logenplatz: Hier oben fühlt man sich wie ein König – oder wie eine Königin. «Und stellen Sie sich vor, früher reiste man nur so!»

Verliebt in ihren Beruf Das Gefährt vom «Hôtel Kronenhof» ist ein Schatz aus ihrer Kindheit. Schon als kleines Mädchen kannte Riedberger alle Kutscher vom Dorf. Ihr Onkel Peter Tom begann in den 1950er Jahren, Gäste mit Kutschen auszufahren, und natürlich kannte sie auch Stefan Jiecklin, den letzten Kronenhof-Kutscher von der hoteleigenen Kutscherei.

Vernarrt in Pferde und in das Metier, wollte sie alles von ihrem Onkel lernen. Dass es dafür keine «Lehre» braucht, versteht sich von selbst. Das hat man im Blut. Den Draht zu den Tieren, das Klappern der Hufe, die Leidenschaft für das langsame Fahren durch die Berglandschaft, an frischer Luft in Einklang mit der Natur. So übernahm Helene Riedberger vor 17 Jahren den Familienbetrieb und besitzt heute vier Kutschen und neun Pferde. Als sie noch klein war, habe es 20 oder 30 Kutscher gegeben im Dorf und der Umgebung, heute sind es rund die Hälfte.

Meistens führen die Ausflüge ins Rosegtal. Dorthin fährt sogar ein Pferde-Omnibus mit fixem Fahrplan. Ihre Ausflüge aber kann man buchen. Besonders gerne erklärt Riedberger während der Fahrt die Flora und Fauna. Abgesehen davon wirke die Langsamkeit bei den Gästen oft Wunder: Die Menschen lassen los, viele würden sogar ihre Lebensgeschichten erzählen. «Es entsteht eine Leichtigkeit, denn ich kann ja nichts weiter mit den Geschichten

HORSE WHISPERER The soon to be 120-year old Kronenhof carriage has been awoken from its slumber. It has been restored by experts.

Since last year it has shone with new lustre and is once again functional.

Her pulse was high last spring. That‘s when Helene Riedberger began her first test drive with the newly restored Kronenhof carriage. What an exulted feeling to be able to climb up onto the gently rocking glass Landau from 1897. «I was so nervous that I was a bundle of emotions», the full-time coach driver raves.

When she was asked by the Grand Hotel Kronenhof whether she wanted to take guests on excursions with the hotel carriage, she didn‘t need to consider for a second. «That‘s like being allowed to drive a Rolls-Royce.» Reverently, almost as if it were her own, the Engadin resident caresses the carriage, which, after around 25 years as a «mere» decorative object, can now finally be driven again, and no longer needs to stand in front of the hotel entrance in all kinds of weather. The green leather still smells new, the black varnish has just been polished. The employees are visibly proud of «their» new vehicle. The best thing is, the coach driver has a front row seat. Up here she feels like a king, or more like a queen. «And just imagine, people used to only travel this way!»

In love with her profession The vehicle of the «Hôtel Kronenhof» is a treasure from her childhood. Even as a little girl, Riedberger knew all of the coachmen from the village. Her uncle Peter Tom began taking guests on excursions with carriages in the 1950‘s, and of course she also knew Stefan Jiecklin, the last Kronenhof coachman from the hotel‘s own coach stable. Absolutely crazy about horses and the profession, she wanted to learn everything from her uncle. That «training» for this isn‘t required goes without saying. It‘s in the blood. A connection to the animals, the clacking of hooves, the passion for driving slowly through the mountain landscape, with fresh air in harmony with nature. Helene Riedberger thus took over the family business 17 years ago and now owns four carriages and nine horses.

When she was still young, there were 20 or 30 coachmen in the village and the surrounding area, today there are around half.

The excursions are usually to the Roseg Valley. An equestrian omnibus with a permanent schedule even goes there. But such excursions can also be booked.

Riedberger is especially happy to explain the flora and fauna during the trip.

anfangen.» In diesem Beruf müsse man die Menschen lieben. Die 58-Jährige erzählt von Freundschaften, die entstanden sind: Einmal sei eine 85-jährige Dame mit ihr ausgefahren. Sie hätte es kaum mehr auf die Kutsche geschafft, doch die Kutscherin wollte ihr unbedingt noch dieses Erlebnis ermöglichen. Im Gespräch hätten sie herausgefunden, dass ihr Gast einst als Kindermädchen bei einer Familie aus Pontresina angestellt war. So konnte Helene Riedberger ihre Passagierin wieder mit dieser Familie zusammenführen.

Unbezifferbare Werte Besonders aber liebt die Kutscherin ihre Tiere. «Die Pferde und ich sind ein gutes Team.» Sie spüre immer, wie es den Tieren gehe, ob sie zufrieden sind. «Wenn das Pferd die Ohren nach vorne stellt, dann ist alles wunderbar.» Dieses Vertrauensverhältnis beginnt bereits morgens um 6 Uhr: «Im Stall erzähle ich ihnen, was uns am jeweiligen Tag erwartet.» Und sowieso, für sie sei klar, ihre Pferde würde sie nie in fremde Hände geben. Wenn die Tiere alt werden, dürften sie im Betrieb sterben. «Ich will mich bei ihnen bedanken für das, was sie mir gegeben haben in ihrem Leben.» Und sogleich schwärmt Helene Riedberger von ihren beiden Lieblingspferden, der zehnjährigen Jeanette und der 18-jährigen Beauty. «Wir sind das Trio, das mit der Kronenhof-Kutsche ausfahren darf.» Und natürlich ziehe sie für diese festlichen Gelegenheiten eine edle Uniform an.

Das grosse Geld verdient man nicht als Kutscherin.

«Aber es reicht zum Leben.» Wer diesen Beruf wählt, tut dies aus Idealismus. Helene Riedberger streicht immer wieder über «ihr» Gefährt mit den grossen eleganten Rädern und den kunstvollen gelben Verzierungen. «Auch ich habe eine 100-jährige Kutsche. Ich möchte sie gerne ebenfalls renovieren und fahrtüchtig machen lassen.» Ein Freund meinte dazu, da müsste sie gut rechnen, ob sich das finanziell lohne. Die passionierte Kutscherin schüttelt den Kopf und strahlt: «Wenn ich eines Tages das Geld für eine Renovation habe, führe ich darüber sicher keine Rechnung.» Es gibt gewisse Werte, die sind unbezifferbar.

Kultur hat keinen Preis. Wir schweigen und freuen uns über den neuen Schatz im Grand Hotel Kronenhof.

Irrespective of this, the slowness often does wonders for the guests: people relax, many even tell their life stories. «A feeling of ease arises, because I can‘t do anything with the stories.» In this profession you have to love people. The 58-year old tells of friendships that have arisen: she once took out an 85-year old lady. She hardly managed to get into the carriage, but the coach driver absolutely wanted to make this experience possible for her. While talking she found out that her guest was once employed as a nanny by a family from Pontresina.

Helene Riedberger was then able to reunite her passenger with this family.

Unquantifiable values But the coach driver especially loves her animals. «The animals and I are a good team.» She always knows how the animals are doing, whether they are content.

«When a horse points its ears forward, everything is just fine.» This relationship of trust already begins in the morning at 6 a.m.: «In the stall I tell them what we can expect that day.» And in any case, one thing is clear, she would never place them in strange hands. When the animals grow old, they are allowed to die in the business. «I want to thank them for what they gave me during their life.» At the same time, Helene Riedberger speaks lovingly of her two favourite horses, the 10-year old Jeanette and the 18-year old Beauty. «We are the trio that gets to go out with the Kronenhof carriage.» And of course she wears a fine uniform for these festive occasions.

There is no big money to be had driving coaches. «But it‘s enough to live on.»

Those who choose this profession do so for idealistic reasons. Helene Riedberger caresses «her» vehicle with the big, elegant wheels and the artistic yellow adornments again and again. «I also have a 100-year old carriage. I would also like to renovate it and make it roadworthy.» A friend told her she should really consider whether that makes financial sense. The passionate coach driver shakes her head and beams: «If I one day have enough money for a renovation, I certainly won‘t be calculating.» There are certain values that are unquantifiable.

Culture doesn‘t have a price. We grow silent and enjoy the new treasure in the Grand Hotel Kronenhof.

GROSSBAUSTELLE Einen neuen Spa-Bereich zu bauen, ist an sich schon keine Alltagsarbeit für einen Architekten. Besonders gross aber ist die Herausforderung, wenn parallel der Hotelbetrieb weiterläuft. Rolf Som plante den neuen Wellnessbereich im Kulm Hotel und machte Unmögliches möglich.

Der Ausblick aus der Lobby des Kulm Hotel schien den Sommer über noch relativ harmlos: Unten glitzerte der St. Moritzersee wie gewohnt. Doch nur wenige Meter vor dem Hotel klaffte das Loch einer Grossbaustelle. «Die Sommergäste sollten möglichst wenig spüren von den Arbeiten für den Totalumbau und die Erweiterung des Spas im Kulm Hotel mit komplett umgestaltetem Hallenbad, neuer Technik sowie Sanierung der Gebäudehülle», erklärt Architekt Rolf Som. Darum gab es überall Provisorien und Abtrennwände. Übrigens: Die offensichtlichste optische Erneuerung von aussen ist das neue Freiluft-Aussenbecken mit Whirlpool. Damit dieses energetisch verantwortet werden konnte, wurden diverse Kompensationsmassnahmen im übrigen Hotel ergriffen.

Verschiedene Interessen Der Architekt musste immer wieder einen beeindruckenden Spagat machen: Die Bauarbeiten verursachten störende Immissionen, und gleichzeitig stand man unter Zeitdruck, zur Eröffnung der Wintersaison 2012/2013 komplett fertig zu sein. Das bereitete manchmal Kopfschmerzen, und doch blieb Som erstaunlich ruhig: «Mich reizen schwierige Aufgaben. Ich finde gerne Lösungen, wo es eigentlich keine zu geben scheint. Bloss Wohnungen zu bauen, ist doch langweilig.» Ein Hotel, das sei wie eine kleine Stadt. Es brauche ein breites Wissen und viel Erfahrung – vor allem wenn bestehende Bausubstanz vorhanden ist.

Im April 2012 begannen die Bauarbeiten. Die ersten Umbauten im Schwimmbad konnten gerade noch am letzten Tag vor dem Sommerbetrieb abgeschlossen werden.

Dann nutzten die Gäste das Schwimmbecken wieder, bevor es im Herbst komplett saniert wurde. «Das war nötig, denn das alte Becken war undicht.» Oder einer der beiden Baukräne wurde einfach während der Saison zusammengeklappt, damit er das Bergpanorama nicht beeinträchtigte. Abgesehen davon waren da das Kostenvolumen von 13 Millionen Franken, das eingehalten werden sollte, und die verschiedenen Interessen, Vorschriften und Bedürfnisse des Hotelbetriebs, der Behörden sowie der Bauleitung.

Immer wieder Überraschungen Hinter der Abschrankung war im Sommer 2012 der Anblick der Baustelle spektakulär. Einige Beispiele: Die Terrasse der Sunny Bar war auf Stahlträgern über der Leere abgestützt. Denn es wurden neue Räume in den Hang

MAJOR CONSTRUCTION SITE Building a new spa area is in itself not exactly a routine job for an architect. The challenge is especially tough when hotel operations need to keep running simultaneously. Rolf Som planned the new wellness area in the Kulm Hotel and made the impossible possible.

The view from the lobby of the Kulm Hotel appeared relatively harmless throughout the summer: Lake St. Moritz glittered below as usual. However, the pit of a major construction site yawned only a few metres in front of the hotel.

«The plan was that summer guests should experience as little as possible of the work involved in the total renovation and expansion of the spa in the Kulm Hotel, with a completely redesigned indoor swimming pool, new technology and the refurbishment of the building shell», architect Rolf Som explains. That‘s why there were provisory structures and separator walls everywhere. By the way: the most obvious visual renewal from outside is the new outdoor pool with whirlpool. In order for this to be justifiable in terms of energy, various compensation measures were taken in the rest of the hotel.

Various interests The architect was repeatedly forced to perform impressive acrobatics: the construction work caused disruptive emissions, and at the same time the project was subject to pressure to be completely finished for the opening of the winter season 2012/2013. That was sometimes the source of headaches, but Som remained astonishingly calm: «I am excited by difficult tasks. I like to find solutions where there don‘t seem to be any. Just building apartments is boring.»

A hotel, that‘s like a small city. A broad base of knowledge and a lot of experience is necessary, especially when existing structures are present.

The construction work began in April 2012. The first renovations in the swimming pool were just completed on the last day before the end of summer operations.

Guests then used the swimming pool again until it was completely refurbished in autumn. «That was necessary, because the old pool was leaky.» Or one of the two cranes was simply folded up during the season so that the mountain panorama wasn‘t interfered with. Besides this, there was the cost volume of CHF 13 million that had to be observed, as well as the different interests, regulations and needs of hotel operations, the authorities and the site management.

hineinversetzt gebaut, direkt unter das sechsgeschossige mächtige Kulm Hotel. Und hier erlebte Rolf Som eine Überraschung: Der Fels war härter als erwartet. Dieser wurde mittels Mikrosprengungen weggeschafft, damit nichts beschädigt wurde. Das beanspruchte wiederum mehr Zeit und Kosten. Gleichzeitig mussten die Kanalisierungen aus dem Hotel neu eingefasst und provisorisch abgeleitet werden.

Im Innern bereiteten die durchzubrechenden Betonwände und Fundamente Sorgen: Diese waren anstatt 30 bis 40 Zentimeter teilweise bis zu einem Meter dick. Und: Immer wieder ist das Projekt im Interesse des Gastes erweitert worden, die Zeitvorgabe blieb aber dieselbe.

Entsprechend gab es zum Ende des Sommerbetriebs, zwischen Anfang September und Ende November, kein Tabu mehr: Zu Spitzenzeiten waren 40 bis 50 Arbeiter auf der Baustelle, während sechs Tagen in der Woche, teils auch im Zweischichtbetrieb.

Natur in moderner Frische Optisch ist der neue Spa nicht wieder zu erkennen. «Wir wollten ein authentisches Raumgefühl schaffen», so der gebürtige Ostschweizer mit Architekturbüro in Celerina.

Die Natur soll sichtbar gemacht werden. Darum gibt es keine Keramikplatten mehr, sondern Naturstein und heimisches Arven- und Lärchenholz. So ist ein Bezug zum Engadin geschaffen worden, in moderner Frische. Die Muster im Holz orientieren sich vereinzelt an typischen oder überlieferten Strukturen. Allerdings entwarf Rolf Som zusammen mit Innenarchitekt Jo Brinkmann eine nüchterne und ruhige Architektur, jenseits von Alpenkitsch.

«Ein Hotel muss gerade im Wellnessbereich immer wieder Neues bieten.» Und er sinniert über gute Architektur: Die sei zeitlos, bleibe schön und werde dann zu Recht unter Schutz gestellt. Das gilt für alte Baukultur wie auch für Neues. Und über sich selbst sagt der 64-Jährige: «Es gibt Architekten, die einfach ihren Stil durchsetzen wollen. Ich versuche eher zu ermöglichen, dass sich der Auftraggeber wiedererkennt.»

above the emptiness on steel girders. This is because new rooms were built integrated into the slope, directly below the six-storey Kulm Hotel. This is where Rolf Som had a surprise: the rock was harder than expected. This was cleared away with micro-detonations so that nothing was damaged. This in turn took more time and increased costs. At the same time, the sewage pipes leading out of the hotel had to be newly encased and temporarily diverted.

Inside, the concrete walls and foundations to be broken through were a cause for concern: instead of 30 to 40 centimetres, these were in some cases up to one metre thick. And: the project was expanded again and again in the interests of the guests, but the schedule remained the same. Accordingly, no taboos remained unbroken at the end of summer operations, between the beginning of September and the end of November: at peak times, 40 to 50 workers were at the construction site, six days a week, sometimes even in two-shift operations.

Nature, fresh and modern In visual terms, the new spa is unrecognisable. «We wanted to create an authentic feeling of space», according to the man born in eastern Switzerland, with an architectural agency in Celerina. Nature was to be made visible. That‘s why there are no longer any ceramic slabs, but natural rock and local Swiss pine and larch wood. This creates a modern and fresh reference to the Engadin.

The patterns in the wood are oriented individually to typical or handed down structures. On the other hand, Rolf Som and the interior designer Jo Brinkmann created a sober and peaceful architecture far distanced from Alpine kitsch. «Especially in the wellness area, a hotel always has to offer new things.» He reflects on good architecture: It is timeless, remains beautiful and is then placed under protection, with justification. This applies both to old and new building culture.

About himself, the 64-year old says: «There are architects who simply want to push through their own style. I prefer to try to make it possible for the client to see himself reflected in the work.»

The new three pillar concept, «relaxation, detoxification, and regeneration» guarantees optimal treatments individually tailored to the requirements of the guests in the Kulm Spa St. Moritz». KAFFEEHAUSKULTUR Das «Sandri» in Perugia ist eine der letzten Pasticcerie von Engadiner Zuckerbäckern in Italien. Eine Geschichte der fünften Schweiz.

Schauspieler des Alltags flanieren auf dem Corso Vannucci von Perugia. Mittendrin die Pasticceria Sandri mit ihrer gewölbten Decke. Zwischen mächtigen Kronleuchtern wachsen Stauden und Blumen empor. Der Blick schweift auf Bilder einer orientalischen Stadt, von Villen oder Gutshöfen. Dazwischen leuchtet das rote Kreuz auf weissem Grunde des Königshauses von Savoyen. Gegenüber prangt das Schweizerkreuz, das auch die Kaffeetassen ziert. Was für eine Kulisse aus der Peruginer Schule des Bugnoli Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts! Bespielt von Einheimischen, die ihren Caffè stehend an der Theke in einem Schluck trinken, den Baristi in weisser Schürze, rotem Jackett und Fliege sowie Gästen aus aller Welt. Die Vitrinen sind üppig gefüllt mit kunstvoll verzierten Süssigkeiten, Pralinés und kandierten Früchten. Ein Fest der Farben und Gerüche. Fröhlich, festlich und erhaben, elegant zugleich. Das Sandri ist ein Zeitzeuge der Hauptstadt Umbriens im Herzen Italiens und zugleich ein Stück lebendiger Engadiner Geschichte.

Schöpferin dieser sinnlichen Welt ist Carla Schucani, Zuckerbäckerin vierter Generation mit Schweizer Pass. Sie sitzt zwischen Bergen von Zeitschriften in ihrem Büro ihres «laboratorio», der Produktion, versteckt in einem Hinterhof.

Hier erzählt sie von der 150-jährigen Familiengeschichte: «Wir und die Pasticceria Stoppani im süditalienischen Bari sind die letzten zwei Caffè Italiens von Bündner Auswanderern, die bis heute im Besitz der Gründerfamilien geblieben sind.» Allerdings hat die Chefin keine Nachkommen. Sie zuckt mit den Achseln: «Nach mir ist Schluss, ausser es geschieht ein Wunder. Keine Ahnung, wie es weitergeht», sagt sie trocken. Doch sie mache weiter, solange sie mag.

Und sie möchte, dass alles so bleibt, wie es ist. Das Alter spielt eine Nebenrolle in dieser Geschichte. Carla Schucani ist 80-jährig und steht mitten im Leben.

Molto svizzera – sehr schweizerisch Ihr Urgrossvater Jachen Schucan stammte aus Ftan im Unterengadin. 1860 kam er nach Perugia und nannte sich bald Giacomo Schucani. Allerdings seien sie keine typischen «Randulins» gewesen – arme Auswanderer aus den Bündner Bergen, die zuerst in Venedig, später in allen europäischen Städten, besonders in Mittelitalien, eine neue Zukunft suchten. Schucan war Bankier und Kaufmann, der sogar in St. Petersburg seine Geschäfte tätigte und mit einer Russin verheiratet war. Er sei immer auf der Suche nach neuen Möglichkeiten gewesen, was ihn schliesslich nach Perugia zog. Den Namen Sandri aber hat die Pasticceria von einem «entfernten» Verwandten erhalten, Nicola Zonder: Als Grossvater Schucani starb, waren

Perennials and flowers grow out from between massive chandeliers. The eye is drawn to images of an oriental city, of villas or estates. Between them, the red cross glows against the white background of the royal house of Savoy. Opposite this hangs resplendent the Swiss cross, which also decorates the coffee cups.

What a stage from the Perugian school of the Bugnoli at the end of the 19th century! Played by natives who drink their coffee in one gulp standing at the counter, the baristi in their white aprons, red jackets and bowties, as well as guests from around the world. The display cases are lavishly filled with artistically decorated sweets, chocolates and candied fruits. A celebration of colours and smells. Cheerful, festive and sublime, but at the same time elegant. The Sandri is a contemporary witness of the capital city of Umbria in the heart of Italy, and simultaneously a piece of living history of the Engadin.

The creator of this sensual world is Carla Schucani, confectioner in the fourth generation with a Swiss passport. She sits between mountains of magazines in her office, her «laboratorio», the production area, hidden in a rear courtyard. Here she tells of the 150-year family history: «We and the Pasticceria Stoppani in Bari in southern Italy are the last two Italian cafes of Swiss emigrants that have remained under the ownership of the founding families to the present day.» But the boss has no successors. She shrugs her shoulders: «It‘s all over after me, unless a miracle happens. I have no idea what happens now», she says drily. However, she will continue as long as she can. And she wants everything to stay as it is. Age plays only a supporting role in this story.

Molto svizzera – very Swiss Her great-grandfather, Jachen Schucan, originated from Ftan in Lower Engadin.

In 1860 he came to Perugia and soon called himself Giacomo Schucani. However, they were no typical «Randulins», poor emigrants from the Swiss mountains, who sought a new future, first in Venice, and later in all European cities, especially in central Italy. Schucan was a banker and merchant, who even did business in St. Petersburg and was married to a Russian. He was always on the lookout for new possibilities, which finally drew him to Perugia. However, the pasticceria received the name Sandri from a «distant» relative, Nicola Zonder:

die Erben noch minderjährig. Zonder übernahm als Übergangslösung das Kolonialwarengeschäft, das italienisiert zu «Sandri» wurde.

Als Vater Guglielmo Mutter Annamaria Crispolti heiratete, übernahmen Schucanis wieder das «Sandri». Sie begannen Patisserie nach Turiner, Französischer und Schweizer Art herzustellen. Dazu gehört auch heute die Engadiner Nusstorte, die Linzertorte oder die Rüeblitorte, die «Torta di carotte». «Die wollten die Italiener lange nicht essen. Die denken, mit Karotten macht man nur Salziges.» Kurzerhand taufte sie Carla Schucani in «Torta di Ruben» um.

«Jetzt lieben sie die Leute ...» Und dank der Mutter kam auch die Kaffeerösterei hinzu: «Vater wollte keinen Kaffee. Aber Mutter war eine richtige Italienerin.»

Die Besitzerin zeigt die alte Röstmaschine, die erste in Umbrien, und lässt die dunkel gerösteten Bohnen durch die Finger rieseln: «Feinste Arabica-Bohnen, nur wenig Robusta.» Und sie kontrolliert immer, ob der Kaffee perfekt aus der Hebel-Siebträgermaschine rinnt. La Signorina, wie Schucani genannt wird, sei «molto svizzera – sehr genau», bestätigt eine Mitarbeiterin.

Und Carla Schucani ist vor allem Künstlerin: Malerin, eine Macherin. Sie schafft unermüdlich Zeichnungen, Gemälde, entwirft Schmuck und Vorlagen für Porzellan. Allerdings stellt sie sich nicht gern in den Mittelpunkt und verkauft ihre Werke ungern. «Darum habe ich gedacht, es ist besser, wenn auch ich wie Vater Süssigkeiten mache. Diese Sachen kann man besser als meine Bilder reproduzieren.» Zudem ist auch das Kunst. Monumente, Brunnen, Palazzi oder Türme schafft das Team der Pasticceria aus Zuckermasse, und manchmal «kommentieren» Exponate in der Vitrine gar Ereignisse aus Stadt und Land. Lebensspiegel aus Zucker und Schokolade.

Lerchen und Olivenbäume Allerdings zeigte sich das Leben nicht immer von seiner süssen Seite. Schwes– ter Nicoletta Schucani – sie begrüsst die Kunden an der Kasse – erzählt vom Kaffeehaus als Schauplatz politischer Geschichte: «Zu Mussolinis Zeiten trafen sich die Antifaschisten im Sandri. Unsere Familie hat sich dann von 1943 bis zum Kriegsende in die Schweiz, nach Sent, zurückgezogen.» Das Sandri wurde in dieser Zeit von den Schwiegereltern Crispolti-Barigiani allen Widerständen zum Trotz weitergeführt. «Man sagte, wir seien aus Italien geflohen, weil wir Juden gewesen seien.» Nur knapp konnte den deutschen Besatzern bewiesen werden, dass dies nicht stimmte und so verhindert werden, dass eine Bombe die prunkvolle Pasticceria zerstört hätte ... Carla Schucani lebte nicht nur in Sent, sie besuchte weiter die Kantonsschule in Chur und blieb bis 1950 in der Schweiz.

Geblieben ist das Elternhaus in Sent, das Bündner Deutsch mit charmantem italienischem Akzent, Romanisch, Französisch und die Liebe zur zweiten Heimat. Carla Schucani meint: «Hier fehlen mir die Lerchen. Im Engadin sehne ich mich nach den Olivenbäumen.» – Ihre Beobachtungen, egal an welchem der beiden Orte, finden sich in ihrer Kunst wieder. Und ihr Schaffen sowie die Geschichte sind mit ein Grund, warum ein Kaffeehaus nicht einfach ein Caffè ist.

Das Leben ist ein Theater. Und Kaffeehäuser sind eine Bühne für Schauspieler – auf dem Corso.

When father Guglielmo married mother Annamaria Crispolti, the «Sandri» was once again taken over by Schucanis. They began to manufacture pastries according to Turin, French and Swiss recipes. These also included the Engadin nut gateau, the Linzer torte or the Rüeblitorte, the «Torta di carotte» or carrot cake. «The Italians didn‘t want to eat them for a long time. They think carrots can only be used for salted dishes.» Carla Schucani quickly renamed them «Torta di Ruben». «Now people love them ...» The coffee roast house was also added thanks to the mother: «Father didn‘t want coffee. But mother was a true Italian.» The owner shows the old roaster, the first in Umbria, and lets the dark roasted beans fall through her fingers: «The finest Arabica beans, only little Robusta.» And she always checks to make sure that the coffee flows perfectly from the lever-filter holder machine. La Signorina, as Schucani is called, is «molto svizzera – very exact», an employee confirms.

More than anything else, Carla Schucani is an artist: painter, a doer. The tirelessly creates drawings and paintings, designs jewellery and templates for china. However, she doesn‘t like to be the centre of attention or sell her works.

«That‘s why I thought it would be better when I make sweets like father. These things can be reproduced better than my pictures.» It is also art. The pasticceria team creates monuments, fountains, palazzi or towers from sugar paste, and exhibits in the display case sometimes even «comment» on events of the city and the country. Mirror images of life of sugar and chocolate.

Larks and olive trees However, life hasn‘t always been sweet. Sister Nicoletta Schucani, who greets customers at the cashier, speaks of the coffee house as a venue of political history: «The antifascists met in the Sandri during the Mussolini era. From 1943 until the end of the war our family withdrew to Switzerland, to Sent.» The Sandri continued in this period under the management of the parents-in-law CrispoltiBarigiani despite all obstacles. «It was said that we fled from Italy because we were Jews.» They were only just able to prove to the German occupiers that this was not the case, and thus prevent a bomb from destroying the splendid pasticceria ... Carla Schucani not only lived in Sent, she also continued to attend the cantonal school in Chur and remained in Switzerland until 1950.

Remaining is the family home in Sent, the Swiss German with the charming Italian accent, Romansh, French and the love of the adopted home. Carla Schucani says: «I miss the larks here. In the Engadin I miss the olive trees.» – Her observations, regardless of which of the two places they refer to, are reflected in her art. Her creative work, as well as the history, is also a reason why a coffee house is not simply a cafe. Life is a theatre. And coffee houses are a stage for actors, on the Corso.

Wer hat Ricola erfunden? Die Schweizer!

Und woher stammen die 13 Kräuter für das berühmte Original? Unter anderem aus dem Valposchiavo. – Ein Tal am Rande der Schweiz, das dank innovativer und offener Bioproduzenten heute nicht auf dem Abstellgleis steht.

Who invented Ricola? The Swiss! And where do the 13 herbs for the famous original originate? From the Val Poschiavo, among other places – a valley at the edge of Switzerland, which, thanks to innovative and open organic producers, has not been placed on the scrapheap.

Der Duft von Thymian, Zitronenmelisse, Basilikum, Orangenminze und Kamille umschmeichelt in Le Prese sanft die Nase. Etwa 20 verschiedene Kräuter wachsen auf insgesamt 15 Hektaren Land. Doch für Reto Raselli müsste es hier Anfangs Juli intensiver riechen. «Es regnete bis jetzt viel zu viel dieses Jahr», ärgert er sich beim Rundgang durch die bunten Felder. Die ätherischen Öle würden sich erst bei viel Sonne und Wärme voll entfalten. Er spüre den Klimawandel der letzten Jahre: «Die langen Schlechtwetterperioden kannten wir früher nicht», sagt Raselli und zeigt auf gelbe Blätter einer Staude, die mit Rostpilzen befallen sind. Der Puschlaver meint etwas mürrisch, das sei halt so. Als Biobauer setzt er weder Kunstdünger noch Chemie gegen Schädlinge ein. «Dafür braucht es bei meinen Produkten keine künstlichen Aromen.» Viele Konsumenten wüssten doch gar nicht mehr, wie Naturprodukte schmecken, findet Raselli.

Qualität statt Massenware Natürlich hat Bio seinen Preis. Darum erklärt der Landwirt gerne, was hinter der Arbeit steckt: beinahe 100 Prozent Handarbeit. Zwei Gastarbeiterinnen aus Portugal kauern über dem Feld und entfernen das Unkraut. Im Trocknungsraum zeigt Reto Raselli die fein säuberlich sortierten roten Kornblumen. Diese werden einzeln auseinander gezupft, bevor sie im transparenten Pyramidenteebeutel für frische Farbtupfer sorgen.

Während des Sommers sind die Arbeitstage lang, spätabends kümmert er sich um die Administration. Doch Raselli liebt seinen Beruf. Es gäbe kaum eine abwechslungsreichere und kreativere Arbeit. Und er ist überzeugt: «Nur Bio hat Zukunft.» Auch sein herkömmlicher Hof mit Kühen, Kälbern, Eseln, Pferden, Schweinen und Hühnern ist Bio-zertifiziert. Gerade in einer Randregion hätte Raselli als konventioneller Bauer keine Chance – und das nicht nur, weil Biobetriebe vom Bund höher als herkömmliche Bauernhöfe subventioniert würden.

Es bekennt sich denn nicht nur Reto Raselli zu Bio. Fast das ganze Südtal zwischen dem hochalpinen Engadin und dem mediterranen Italien produziert nach dem grünen Label verschiedene, teils innovative Produkte: Vom Bergkäser bis zur Rosenbäuerin setzen Puschlaver auf ausgesuchte Lebensmittel von hoher Qualität statt auf Massenware. Doch obwohl die Schweiz als Vorzeigeland in

However, for Reto Raselli, it should smell more intense here at the beginning of July. «Up to now it has rained much too much this year», he frets during the tour of the colourful fields. The essential oils only completely unfold with much sun and warmth. He can feel the impact of climate change in recent years: «We didn‘t use to have these long periods of poor weather», says Raselli and points to the yellow leaves of a bush afflicted with rust fungus. The native of the Val Poschiavo says, that‘s how it is, with a slight tone of complaint. As an organic farmer, he uses neither artificial fertiliser nor chemicals to combat pests.

«On the other hand, my products require no artificial flavouring.» Many consumers don‘t even know what natural products taste like anymore, Raselli finds.

Quality instead of mass-produced goods Of course, organic farming has its price. The farmer is thus happy to explain what lies behind the work: nearly 100 percent manual labour. Two itinerant labourers from Portugal squat over the field and remove the weeds. In the drying room, Reto Raselli shows the finely sorted red cornflowers. These are individually separated from one another before they provide a fresh splash of colour in the transparent pyramid teabag.

During the summer, the workdays are long. He looks after administrative tasks in the late evening. But Raselli loves his work. There is hardly a job that is more diversified and creative. And he is convinced: «Only organic farming has a future.» His conventional farm with cows, calves, donkeys, horses, pigs and hens is also organic-certified. Especially in a marginal region, Raselli would have stood no chance as a conventional farmer, and not only because organic operations are better subsidised than conventional farms.

Not only Reto Raselli is committed to organic farming.

Almost the entire southern valley between the high alpine Engadin and Mediterranean Italy produces different, in some cases innovative products according to the green label: from the mountain cheese maker to the rose farmer, natives of the Val Poschiavo trust in select food products of high quality instead of mass-produced goods. However, although Switzerland is viewed as an exemplary nation in

questions of quality, the farmer pays attention to origin, plant cultivation and animal husbandry: «I wish the importance or regional products would increase even more.»

Qualitätsfragen gilt, schaut der Bauer aufmerksam auf Herkunft, Pflanzenanbau und Tierhaltung: «Ich wünsche mir, dass der Stellenwert regionaler Produkte noch höher wird.»

Durchbruch mit Ricola Vor etwa 30 Jahren begann das Kräutergeschäft anzulaufen. Eine Wirtschaftsstudie ortete fürs Tal ein Potenzial in diesem Sektor. Einige Bäuerinnen pflanzten im eigenen Garten Kräuter an, doch bald wurde eine Genossenschaft für Kräuteranbau gegründet. Gleichzeitig erweiterte die Konditorfamilie Richterich in Laufen bei Basel ihre Produktpalette, Reto Raselli stieg bei der Herstellung des weltweit berühmten Ricola-Kräuterzuckers mit ein. Heute liefert er rund 20 Tonnen Kräuter – etwas mehr als die Hälfte seiner Jahresproduktion – an Ricola, die wiederum circa 200 Tonnen Kräuter von 200 Produzenten der «ArGe Bergkräuter» aus der ganzen Schweiz bezieht. Raselli ist einer der grössten. Der 60-Jährige winkt ab: «Die Grösse ist doch nicht so wichtig ...»

Lieber erzählt der Geschäftsführer von neuen Teemischungen oder dass er gerade mit einem Punktekoch einen neuen Gewürzbeutel für Pasta, Gemüse oder Fleisch entwickelt. Doch der Kräuterkönig spricht nicht von Trends: «Vieles kommt und geht», schmunzelt der braun gebrannte Bergler. «Vor ein paar Jahren war es Ginseng, Aloe vera oder Grüntee. Heute spricht kaum jemand davon.»

Dafür sei Edelweiss im Kommen, sogar im Kräutertee. Das wecke emotionale Gefühle. Die Blume eignet sich zudem für Kosmetikprodukte. Und sie wirke gegen gewisse Krebserkrankungen. – «Auch das hat man jetzt also entdeckt», meint Reto Raselli trocken dazu und blinzelt in die Sonne, bevor er wieder aufs Feld muss: Auf dass es jetzt einfach einen richtig heissen Sommer gebe!

Kräuter auch in Pontresina Wenige Minuten vom Dorf entfernt können Sie durch den Ricola-Kräutergarten spazieren. Der kreisförmig angelegte Kräutergarten bietet Unterhaltung, bei der man auch etwas lernen kann: Kleine Tafeln informieren über die 13 Kräuter, die in jedem Ricola-Kräuterbonbon stecken.

Breakthrough with Ricola The herb business started rolling around 30 years ago. An economic study discovered potential for the valley in this sector. A few farmers planted herbs in their own garden, but a cooperative for herb cultivation was soon founded. At the same time, the confectioner family Richterich, based in Laufen near Basel, expanded its product portfolio. Reto Raselli also got involved in the manufacture of the worldfamous Ricola herbal sugar. Today he delivers around 20 tons of herbs, a little more than half of his annual production, to Ricola, which in turn procures around 200 tons of herbs from the 200 producers of the «ArGe Bergkräuter (mountain herb syndicate)» throughout Switzerland. Raselli is one of the largest. The 60-year old shrugs that off: «The size isn‘t that important ...»

The managing director instead prefers to talk about new tea blends, or that he has just developed a new spice pouch for pasta, vegetables or meat together with a point chef. However, the king of herbs doesn‘t talk about trends: «A lot of things come and go», the tanned mountain man grins. «A few years ago it was ginseng, aloe vera or green tea. Today they are hardly mentioned.» On the other hand, edelweiss is on the rise, even in herbal tea. That awakens emotions. The flower is also suitable for cosmetic products. And it has proven effective against certain types of cancer. – «So now they‘ve discovered that too», Reto Raselli states drily and blinks into the sun, before he has to go back out into the fields: simply hoping for a really hot summer!

Herbs also in Pontresina Only a few minutes away from the village, you can go for a walk through the Ricola herb garden. The circular herb garden offers entertainment that is also informative: small panels provide information about the 13 herbs found in every Ricola herbal lozenge.

Koenig of St. Moritz It all began in the late 1970’s when the future founder of the company started working for one of the world`s most famous «jewellers». They realised quickly in Paris that the encouraged man had a close relation to this line of business and brought a highest degree of good taste and motivation; as a result he has been offered a leading position. He exceeded all expactations, but also realised that the future would have other plans for him. He knew that large enterprises would no longer be able to fulfill the needs and requirements of their customers to the same level as in the past.

This, however, was exactly what he wanted to do.

With the aim of offering the customers something completely unique, Ewald König founded König Design Inc. in 1987. From the very first beginning the company developed into an institution, becoming one of the most exclusive addresses in St. Moritz.

The customers appreciated the house‘s style and the number of supporters/fans continously grew.

At that time like today there were plenty of ideas.

To realise these ideas, however, was not always easy, as a fact that he had worked with different external suisse workshops. Everything caused problems and seemed extremely complicated. He was often told that he was trying to do the imposssible. Not easy to understand, as he was trying to do things that had

been possible 100 years ago. The aim was refinement and aesthetic beauty, something that should be even easier with new technologies. But the solution of all these problems was near. After completing his goldsmith training, his son, Roger König, joined the family business in 1996. Since he was on board, there were no more limits, everything was possible.

From this point the businesss really took of.

To father and son «100% swiss made» is not only a slogan, it is a mission! They set up a small workshop in St. Moritz, which has grown in the meanwhile to a size of 100 m2 and 5 further staff members. In the year 2008 they established the brand «Koenig of St. Moritz».

Roger König: «The developement of the last years is also a merit of our customers, which appreciate and reward our excellent price performance ratio, combined with the highest quality and individuality.»

The family business will surely follow the taken path and no doubt will continue to present us delightful surprises in the future.

Galerie Andrea Caratsch MILAN KUNC «GOLDBILDER» Die in St. Moritz und Zürich etablierte Galerie Andrea Caratsch eröffnet diesen Winter neue Räumlichkeiten an der Via Serlas 12, unterhalb des Kulm Hotel. Die moderne Architektur der neuen Galerie mit ihren grossflächigen Fensterfronten lädt zu einem Kunstbesuch in drei Räume auf 500 Quadratmetern ein. In diesem grosszügigen Volumen werden Werke der klassischen Moderne und der zeitgenössischen Kunst dem Publikum präsentiert.

Das Traumartige von Kunc’ Visionen, das sich als roter Faden durch sein Werk zieht, findet damit auf feierlichem Goldgrund seinen Höhepunkt.

Milan Kunc ist ein tschechischer Vertreter einer postmodernen Pop Art und Mitbegründer der «Gruppe Normal» in Düsseldorf. Sein Kunststudium hat er unter der Leitung von Joseph Beuys und Gerhard Richter an der Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf absolviert.

not disappeared from painting and is experiencing a new upsurge since Yves Klein. In Milan Kunc «Gold Paintings», his cultural and natural landscapes are embraced by a warm and golden light, yet putting forward a more profound and poignant criticism of the current ‘Zeitgeist’ and art world. The fact that objects, external light sources and the observer himself are reflected in the gold background, depending on the angle of view, makes these works of art transformable whilst emphasizing their own immaterial value. The dreamlike aspect of Kunc’s visions, which runs through his works like a thread, thus finds its climax on the solemn gold background.

Milan Kunc is a Czech representative of a Postmodern Pop Art and cofounder of the «Gruppe Normal» in Düsseldorf. He completed his studies in art at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf under the supervision of Joseph Beuys and Gerhard Richter.

Einen kurzen Einblick in die umfangreiche Arbeit der SOS-Crew am Corvatsch.

Der frische Schnee glitzert in der Wintersonne. Das ist ein Gefühl wie Freiheit. Trotzdem: Ein Unfall passiert schnell, und dann ist die SOS-Crew sofort zur Stelle. Das Gebiet muss abgesperrt werden, Verunfallte werden je nach Verletzung mit dem Rettungsschlitten, der Bergbahn oder dem Helikopter ins Tal gebracht, wo die Ambulanz die Patienten ins Krankenhaus bringt.

Allerdings ist die Rettungscrew nicht erst im Einsatz, wenn ein Unfall passiert. Eine gute Sicherung der Pisten ist die beste Prävention. So erzielte der Corvatsch bei verschiedenen Tests Spitzenresultate. Dafür wird auch mitten in der Nacht für die Sicherheit der Gäste gearbeitet. Dann, wenn vom Tal aus einzig die Scheinwerfer der Pistenmaschinen zu sehen sind.

A little insight into the extensive work of the SOS crew at Piz Corvatsch.

The fresh snow glistens in the winter sun. That is a feeling like freedom. Nonetheless: an accident can happen quickly, and then the SOS crew is there immediately. The area needs to be cordoned off. Depending upon the nature of their injuries, accident casualties are brought down into the valley with the rescue sled, the mountain railway or the helicopter, where the ambulance brings the patients to the hospital.

However, the rescue crew isn‘t only active when an accident happens. The effective securing of the slopes is the best prevention. In this respect the Piz Corvatsch has received top results in various tests. In order for this to remain so, work is carried out to ensure the safety of the guests in the middle of the night; then, when only the headlights of the slope machines are visible from the valley.

Beispiel Lawinensprengungen Schneit es stärker, kann ein Arbeitstag bereits um 4 Uhr in der Früh beginnen. An einem als «kritisch» eingestuften Hang müssen Lawinen gesprengt werden. Noch bei Dunkelheit werden im SOS-Büro bei der Corvatsch-Mittelstation die Arbeiten verteilt. Dabei erfordert das Platzieren der Munition viel Erfahrung. Das geschieht nicht nur direkt auf der Piste oder von den Liften aus, sondern auch per Helikopter. Dabei muss das Timing stimmen, und es braucht eine genaue Kenntnis der Hänge. Abgesehen davon sind die Vorschriften des Bundes streng. Beispielsweise müssen die Sicherheitsanzündschnüre mindestens 80 Zentimeter lang sein, wo andernorts 60 Zentimeter reichen. Und insgesamt dürfen pro Helikopterflug nur 80 Kilo Sprengstoff mitgenommen werden.

Sind schliesslich die Sprengungen erledigt, müssen die verbrauchten Materialien penibel genau notiert werden. Der Umgang mit der sensiblen Ware wird von der Kantonspolizei genau überprüft.

Example: avalanche detonations When snowfall increases, a work day can already start at 4:00 a.m. On a slope classified as «critical», avalanches need to be detonated. Even while it is still dark, tasks are distributed in the SOS office at the Corvatsch intermediate station. The positioning of the ammunition requires a lot of experience. This is carried out not only directly on the slope or from the lifts, but also by helicopter. The timing has to be right and precise knowledge of the slopes is required. In addition to this, federal regulations are strict. For example, the safety interval ropes must be at least 80 centimetres long, where 60 centimetres are sufficient elsewhere. A total of only 80 kilos of explosives may be taken along on each helicopter flight.

When the detonations have finally been carried out, the materials used need to be noted with extreme precision.

The handling of the sensitive material is strictly controlled by the cantonal police.

Pistenkontrolle per Ski Jeden Morgen, bevor die Lifte ihren Betrieb aufnehmen, fahren zudem die SOS-Patrouilleure alle Pisten auf Skiern ab. Sie ziehen Netze nach, stellen Schilder wieder auf und sichern schwierige Orte neu. Das ist ebenfalls eine der umfangreichen Aufgaben der elfköpfigen Crew. Und auch wenn die Vorbereitungen genau getätigt wurden, stehe man während der Wintersaison ständig unter Strom. Man könne nie wissen, was passiert, und müsse immer aufmerksam sein, sagen die Mitarbeiter. Das sei spannend, stärke den Teamgeist, aber es könne teilweise sehr anstrengend sein.

Zwar ist die letzte Pistenkontrolle «bereits» um 16.30 Uhr, doch das Wetter wird auch nach einem Tag auf der Piste beobachtet. Feierabend mache man, wenn man schlafe. Sonst bleiben die Gedanken bei den Schneebedingungen. Die Sicherheit der Pisten am Corvatsch kommt nicht von ungefähr.

Slope monitoring on skis Each morning before the lifts commence operation, the SOS patrollers ski all of the ski slopes. They tighten nets, stand up signs and secure difficult locations anew. That is also one of the extensive tasks of the 11-member crew. And even when the preparations are carried out precisely, the constant level of high alertness persists throughout the winter season. You can never know what might happen and must remain alert at all times, say the staff. That‘s exciting, strengthens team spirit, but can sometimes also be very strenuous.

While the last slope inspection «already» takes place at 4:30 p.m., an eye is nonetheless kept on the weather after a day on the slopes. The work only stops during sleep.

Otherwise, thoughts are always with the snow conditions.

Flowery «Heutal» In spring and early summer, the «Val da Fain» (hay valley) is a true paradise for flowers and wild animals. Entire herds of mountain goats and marmots can be viewed right up close here. Access to the «Heutal» is located opposite the Diavolezza Valley Station, where a hiking trail leads to Alp Stretta. If the alp local residents are at home, they serve guests with fresh cows’ milk, cheese and other delicacies.

«Schönster Flecken der Schweiz» Diesen Titel trägt der Palpuognasee seit 2007 nach einer Umfrage im Schweizer Fernsehen. Der See liegt oberhalb von Preda und ist über die Albula-Passstrasse, mit dem Auto, dem Zug oder sogar auf einer Wanderung gut zu erreichen. Das Wasser des Sees mit seinen blaugrünen Tönen bietet vor allem im Herbst, wenn die ihn umgebenden Lärchen gelb verfärbt sind, ein einmaliges Farbenspiel. Wer möchte, kann sich hier sogar als Angler versuchen und ein Tagespatent lösen.

The lake is located beyond Preda and can be easily reached via the Albula Pass road, by car, train or even on foot. FESTIVAL DA JAZZ: WELTSTARS VOR KLEINER KULISSE Das im Hochsommer stattfindende Festival da Jazz in St. Moritz geht 2013 in sein sechstes Jahr. Weltstars spielen hier vor kleinem Publikum. Einmalig.

Es ist drei Jahrzehnte her, ein zufälliger Besuch in einem Pariser Club irgendwo am Pigalle: Ein junger Jazzmusiker spielt begnadet auf der Trompete auf. Unvergesslich. Es war Wynton Marsalis, noch ganz zu Beginn einer Karriere, die ihn weltberühmt machen sollte. Heute sind Musiker seines Formats kaum mehr auf der kleinen Bühne zu sehen und zu hören. Längst spielen sie in den grossen Konzertsälen dieser Welt, ihre Gagen lassen sich mit jenen der Stars aus Rock und Pop vergleichen. Ob sich der eine oder die andere der Grossen des Jazz manchmal an die Zeiten zurücksehnt, nach der Atmosphäre eines kleinen Clubs, der Nähe zum Publikum, dem Funken gegenseitiger Begeisterung, wie er vielleicht nur in diesem Rahmen überspringen kann?

«Captain Finger» Ein milder Augustabend in St. Moritz. Im Dracula Club spielt der kalifornische Gitarrist Lee Ritenour, wegen seiner virtuosen Leichtigkeit auch «Captain Finger» genannt, zusammen mit dem New Yorker Bassisten Tom Kennedy, dem deutschen Keyboarder Jesse Milliney und dem deutschen Schlagzeuger Wolfgang Haffner. Letzterer ist kurzfristig für Ritenours Sohn Wesley eingesprungen. Es ist so eng und stickig wie damals in Paris, 150 Gäste füllen den Raum, dessen Interieur seinerseits an die 1970er-Jahre erinnert, bis ins hinterste Eck, und doch ist niemand mehr als ein paar Meter vom Quartett entfernt, das zu musikalischer Höchstform aufläuft. Es wird auf das Schönste improvisiert, und es scheint, als spielten die Vier, die sich musikalisch blind verstehen, seit Jahrzehnten zusammen – dabei haben Ritenour und Haffner gerade ein einziges Mal zusammen gespielt. Nach dem Konzert unterhält sich eine Besucherin angeregt mit Jesse Milliney, der in aller Ruhe seine Instrumente zusammenpackt, während Ritenour sich an der Bar ein Bier genehmigt. Es ist Retro in Perfektion.

Diese aussergewöhnliche, intime Atmosphäre ist Alltag während des vierwöchigen Festival da Jazz im Dracula Club, das 2013 in sein sechstes Jahr geht. Dabei geben sich hier die Weltstars des Jazz die Klinken in die Hand, alleine die Musikerliste aus dem Jahre 2012 lässt jedem Jazzfan das Herz höher schlagen: Mezzoforte, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ahmad Jamal, Nigel Kennedy, Al di Meola, Patty Austin, um nur einige zu nennen, die an insgesamt

Three decades ago; a coincidental visit to a Paris club somewhere on the Pigalle: a young jazz musician plays trumpet giftedly. Unforgetable. It was Wynton Marsalis, still at the start of a career that would make him world-famous. Today you will almost never see and hear musicians of his calibre on a small stage.

They have long been playing in the great concert halls of the world; their fees are comparable with those of stars from rock and pop. Do some of the jazz greats sometimes long for those times, for the atmosphere of a small club, the proximity to the audience, the spark of mutual enthusiasm, as it can probably only jump over in this context?

«Captain Finger» A mild August evening in St. Moritz. The Californian guitarist Lee Ritenour, also known as «Captain Finger» due to his masterly ease, is playing in the Dracula Club together with the New York bassist Tom Kennedy, the German keyboarder Jesse Milliney and the German drummer Wolfgang Haffner. The latter has jumped in at short notice for Ritenour‘s son Wesley. It is as close and stuffy as it was then in Paris. 150 guests fill the room, the interior of which is reminiscent of the 1970‘s, right back to the rearmost corner, and yet nobody is more than a few metres away from the quartet, which is approaching its musical top form.

Improvisation at its best is taking place, and it feels as if the four musicians, who understand each other with their eyes closed, have been playing together for years, although Ritenour and Haffner have only played together once. After the concert, a visitor is having an animated conversation with Jesse Milliney, who is calmly packing up his instruments while Ritenour enjoys a beer at the bar. Retro in perfection.

This exceptional, atmosphere is routine during the four-week Festival da Jazz in the Dracula Club, which is taking place for the sixth time in 2013. During this time, the world stars of jazz hold the door open for each other. The list of musicians from 2012 alone is enough to raise the pulse of any jazz fan: Mezzoforte, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ahmad Jamal, Nigel Kennedy, Al di Meola, Patty Austin,

just to name a few, who will play a total of 50 concerts, half of which are free in the Miles Davis Lounge in the Kulm Hotel and open air on the Hauserterrasse in St. Moritz.

Kleinbühne für Weltstars Die Wurzeln des Festival da Jazz reichen in den Weinkeller des Grand Hotel Kronenhof in Pontresina zurück, wo in den Jahren 2003 bis 2005 Wine&Jazz-Nächte zelebriert wurden. Verantwortlich für das Programm zeichnete der Opernsänger Christian Jott Jenny. Nach dessen Einstellung machten sich Engadinerinnen und Engadiner für eine Fortsetzung stark, und es gelang Jenny, zu seiner eigenen Überraschung, Rolf Sachs, Vereinsvorstand des nur für Mitglieder offenen Dracula Club, mit einem «Asylantrag» für eine Neuauflage des Jazzfestivals zu gewinnen. 2007 ging das erste Festival da Jazz über die Kleinbühne, die rasch zur «grössten für Weltstars» werden sollte.

Heute braucht sich Jott Jenny nicht mehr, wie in den ersten Jahren, mit Humor und viel Überzeugungsarbeit an die Grössen des Jazz zu wenden – es hat sich in der Szene herumgesprochen, welch einmalige Atmosphäre in den Schweizer Bergen herrscht. Und auch das Publikum kommt in Scharen – die Konzerte sind in aller Regel ausverkauft – und manche Liebhaber bleiben gleich für zwei Wochen, um keines zu verpassen. Sie sind für Jott Jenny das Salz in der Konzertsuppe, denn sie als Kenner seien es, die die Musiker erst zu Höchstform auflaufen lassen.

Wenn sie sagen, das sei, wie bei Ahmad Jamal bei seinem Auftritt, das beste Konzert gewesen, das sie je von diesem begnadeten Pianisten gehört hätten. Wenn sie zufrieden sind mit dem Programm, hat Jott Jenny seine Mission erfüllt: «Es darf nie langweilig werden». Und nie elitär oder mondän wie so vieles in dem Nobelkurort. Das gilt auch für Eintrittspreise, die zwischen 80 und 135 Franken und damit auf der Höhe wesentlich grösserer Veranstalter liegen. Die tatsächlichen Kosten, die von Sponsoren und Donatoren gedeckt werden, liegen um den Faktor zehn höher.

Small stage for world stars The roots of the Festival da Jazz reach back to the wine cellar of the Grand Hotel Kronenhof in Pontresina, where the Wine&Jazz Nights were celebrated from 2003 to 2005.

The opera singer Christian Jott Jenny was responsible for the programme. After he was hired, Engadin residents clamoured for a sequel, and Jenny, to his own surprise, was able to win the support of Rolf Sachs, association president of the Dracula Club, open only to members, for an «asylum application» for a new edition of the jazz festival.

The first Festival da Jazz took to the small stage in 2007, which soon became the «biggest for world stars».

Unlike in the early years, Jott Jenny no longer needs to turn to the jazz greats with a sense of humour and a lot of convincing work. Word of the unique atmosphere in the Swiss mountains has gotten around in the scene, and the audience also comes in droves. The concerts are almost always sold out, and some jazz lovers remain for two weeks in order not to miss any of them. They are the extra something for Jott Jenny, because it is they, as connoisseurs, who inspire the musicians to shine. When they say, for example, in the case of the performance of Ahmad Jamal, that this was the best concert from this gifted pianist that they have ever heard. Jott Jenny has accomplished his mission when they are satisfied with the programme: «It must never get boring». And never elitist or sophisticated, like so much else in the luxury spa town. That also applies to ticket prices, which lie between CHF 80 and 135, and thus at the level of significantly larger organisers. The actual costs, which are covered by sponsors and donators, are greater by a factor of ten.

Hugo Wetzel, im dritten Anlauf haben Sie Ihr Ziel am 31. Mai 2012 erreicht. Die Skiweltmeisterschaften kommen 2017 zum 5. Mal nach 1934, 1948, 1974 und 2003 nach St. Moritz.

Wie haben Sie das gemacht?

Wir haben einfach die Karten besser ausgespielt. Es reicht nicht, objektiv die Besten zu sein. Das vorhandene Wissen und die Infrastruktur vom Jahr 2003 können wir ebenfalls vorweisen. Aber es war eine Kandidatur der guten Beziehungen: 17 Personen stimmten über den Austragungsort ab. Fast wichtiger als der Fragenkatalog war, dass wir zu jeder einzelnen Person im Gremium eine gute Beziehung aufgebaut und Vertrauen in unser Projekt geschafft haben. Dass für 2013 und 2015 Österreich und die USA das Rennen machten, war richtig. Aber nachdem Italien in den letzten Jahren einige grosse Winterwettkämpfe durchführen konnte und Åre eben erst 2007 WM-Austragungsort war, ist es zudem auch sportpolitisch wichtig, dass 2017 wir wieder am Zug sind.

Warum finden Sie es so wichtig, dass die WM in St. Moritz stattfindet?

Aus Sicht der Standortentwicklung ist eine WM wertvoll für die Entwicklung von «Hard- und Software» im Tal. Reden wir über die Infrastruktur: Mit dem Anlass können Investitionsstaus gelöst werden. Dank der letzten Meisterschaft passte beispielsweise die Kantonsregierung die Verordnung betreffend Kunstschnee an. Vorher konnte nur punktuell und beschränkt beschneit werden. Seit der Inspektion der FIS (International Ski Federation) von 1999 für die WM 2003 ist Kunstschnee in ganz Graubünden zugelassen. Gerade in den vergangenen Wintern war diese Möglichkeit existenziell wichtig für uns.

Oder nachdem wir während des letzten Skievents das Pressezentrum im leeren Hallenbad unterbrachten, ist für 2017 in St. Moritz endlich ein neues Forum für Kongressmöglichkeiten im Gespräch, das auch nach dem Ende des Wettkampfs von bis zu 800 Personen genutzt wird. Eine WM muss nachhaltig sein und den Leuten Freude machen.

Mit dieser Begeisterung sprechen Sie die «Software» an?

Genau. Ich wünsche mir, dass eine WM die Menschen in ihren Herzen berührt. Und sie muss die Fragen beantworten, was danach folgt. Die Jungen sollen sich in das Skifest eingebunden fühlen. Wir wollten darum von ihnen wissen, welchen Nutzen sie in der WM sehen, und liessen sie zum Thema Zeichnungen malen und Texte schreiben. Wir erhielten spannende Aussagen: Ein Jugendlicher befürchtet, die WM im Jahr 2100 werde auf dem Mars stattfinden, weil es

Hugo Wetzel, you obtained your goal after a third attempt on 31 May 2012. In 2017 the Ski World Championship will take place in St. Moritz for the fifth time after 1934, 1948, 1974 and 2003. How did you manage it?

We simply played our cards better. It‘s not enough to simply be the best in objective terms. We were also able to present our existing knowledge and infrastructure from 2003. However, in the end it was a candidature of good relations: 17 people voted on the venue. Almost more important than the catalogue of questions was that we had established good relations with every single person in the committee and inspired confidence in our project. It was right for Austria and the USA to try for 2013 and 2015. However, after Italy was able to host several major winter competitions in recent years and Åre was just the World Championship venue in 2007, it is also important in terms of sport policy that it‘s our move again in 2017.

Why do you find it so important for the World Championship to take place in St. Moritz?

From the point of view of location development, a World Championship is valuable for the development of «hardware and software» in the valley. Let‘s look at the infrastructure: investment blocks can be eased with such an occasion.

Thanks to the last championship, for example, the cantonal government amended the regulation concerning artificial snow. Previously it could only be used in a punctual and limited fashion. Since the inspection of the ISF (International Ski Federation) of 1999 for the 2003 World Championship, artificial snow has been approved everywhere in Grisons. Particularly in past winters, this possibility was of existential importance for us. Or, after we placed the press centre in the empty indoor swimming pool during the last ski event, a new forum for conferences in St. Moritz is being discussed for 2017, which could also be used by up to 800 people following the competition. A World Championship must be sustainable and bring people pleasure.

With this enthusiasm, are you talking about «software»?

Exactly. I would like a World Championship to touch people‘s hearts. And they have to answer the question of what comes afterwards. The young people should feel involved in the ski festival. That‘s why we asked them what benefits they see in the World Championship, and had them create drawings and write about the topic. We received some exciting responses: one person fears that the World Championship will take place on Mars in the year 2100, because there will be no more snow on Earth. These and other opinions impress me.

We have to show young people that there is a future for them in the mountains!

At first glance, 2017 seems a long way off. However, the dimensions of such an event are large. What‘s already happening now?

The World Championship must remain a current topic for the next five years as of now, otherwise we have done something wrong. The most important moment is the starting point, meaning today. The start must be successful. Each area involved now has to formulate a master plan. It will be one to one and a half years before the first excavator arrives. Even now, planning is almost a full time job for me. Ten people are now involved in the planning phase.

2017 scheint auf den ersten Blick weit weg. Allerdings sind die Dimensionen bei so einem Event gross. Was passiert schon heute?

Die WM muss ab heute fünf Jahre lang aktuell bleiben, sonst haben wir etwas falsch gemacht. Der wichtigste Augenblick ist der Ausgangspunkt, also heute. Der Start muss glücken.

Jeder involvierte Bereich muss jetzt einen Masterplan erarbeiten. Es dauert also rund ein bis eineinhalb Jahre, bis der erste Bagger auffahren wird. Bereits heute ist die Planung fast eine Vollzeitbeschäftigung für mich. Insgesamt sind jetzt zehn Personen in die Planungsphase involviert.

Auf was freuen Sie sich am meisten?

Wieder zusammen mit einem motivierten Team einen Meilenstein zu setzen und zu zeigen, was ein moderner Sportanlass ist und was er für den Sport, die Gesellschaft und das öffentliche Leben bewirken kann. Wir wollen unsere anspruchsvollen Zielsetzungen erfüllen, die Finanzen im Griff haben und eben auf keinen Fall die Nachhaltigkeit aus den Augen verlieren. Doch die Organisation dafür ist nur die Spitze des Eisbergs. Wichtig ist mir auch das Marketing: Wie holen wir die Menschen ab?

Was wird die WM von St. Moritz unverwechselbar machen?

Auch wenn diese Frage zum heutigen Zeitpunkt noch nicht abschliessend beantwortet werden kann, ist es vor allem St.Moritz selbst – mit seiner ureigenen Unverwechselbarkeit. Durch den in seiner Art einzigartigen Lebensstil inmitten einer archaischen Naturkulisse versteht St. Moritz es immer wieder Athleten, Zuschauer und Fans auf und neben der Piste zu begeistern. Und zweitens über den Spirit der Ski WM 2017 - «Live the Future» – mit dem erwähnten starken Einbezug der Jugend. Hier wollen wir einen neuen Weg gehen und uns gemeinsam mit unseren Nachkommen weit über den Anlass hinaus mit Nachhaltigkeit, Innovation und dem daraus entstehenden Vermächtnis auseinandersetzen und Werte schaffen, von denen die Beteiligten noch lange sagen werden «ich war mit dabei».

Sie haben Impulse für die Region erwähnt. Doch wo viel Licht ist, gibt es auch Schatten und kritische Stimmen. Wie erleben Sie die Resonanz der Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner?

Zu Beginn der Arbeiten für die Ski-WM 2003 waren 65 Prozent dafür, am Schluss konnten wir 80 Prozent der Leute begeistern. Die Menschen müssen teilhaben können. Darum wurde die Auslosung am 31. Mai auf Grossleinwand in der Turnhalle übertragen. 300 Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauer waren dabei. Die platzten vor Freude, als der Zuspruch an St. Moritz ging. Dieser Grossanlass wird nicht von oben aufgesetzt. Wir hatten die Olympischen Spiele von 1928 und 1948, wir sind die einzige Destination mit fünf Skiweltmeisterschaften. Die Freude für solche Anlässe ist über viele Jahre hinweg in der Bevölkerung mitgewachsen.

What do you look forward to most?

To working together again with a motivated team to set a milestone and show what a modern sport occasion is, and what it can do for sports, society and public life. We want to achieve our ambitious goals, keep finances well managed and under no circumstances lose sight of sustainability. However, the organisation for this is only the tip of the iceberg. Marketing is also important to me: how do we grab people?

What will make the World Championship of St. Moritz completely individual?

Even if this question can‘t be conclusively answered right now, it is primarily St. Moritz itself, with its inherent distinctiveness. With its unique lifestyle at the centre of an archaic natural backdrop, St. Moritz is always able to raise the enthusiasm of athletes, spectators and fans on and beside the slopes. And secondly, through the spirit of the Ski World Championships 2017 according to the motto «Live the Future», with the already mentioned pronounced integration of young people. Here we want to set out on a new path and discuss sustainability, innovation and the resulting legacy extending far beyond the occasion itself with our successors, and create values of which participants will long be saying «I was also there».

You mentioned impulses for the region. However, where there is much light, there are also shadows and critical voices. How do you experience the response of residents?

At the start of work for the Ski World Championships of 2003, 65 percent were in favour; at the end 80 percent were enthusiastic. People must be able to participate. That‘s why the draw was broadcast on the big screen in the sport hall on 31 May. 300 spectators were there. They exploded with joy when St. Moritz won the draw. This major event is not compelled upon us from above. We had the Olympic Games of 1928 and 1948, and we are the only destination with five ski world championships. The enthusiasm for such events has also increased in the population over many years.

NATIONALPARK: WILDNIS ALS UNIQUE SELLING PROPOSITION Der 1914 gegründete Schweizerische Natio– nalpark ist das am strengsten geschützte Naturreservat im Alpenraum, vergleichbar mit den Wildnisgebieten einer Serengeti oder eines Yellowstone-Nationalparks.

Biken ist der Trendsport zur Sommerzeit, und wer als Tourismusdestination etwas auf sich hält, bietet Bikerinnen und Biker alles, was ihr Herz begehrt – und öffnet das Wanderwegnetz. Im Schweizerischen Nationalpark ist das etwas anders. Es gilt ein Bikeverbot, und auch die Wanderer müssen sich zurücknehmen: Die 80 Kilometer Wanderwege dürfen nicht verlassen werden. Denn im Nationalpark, der 2014 seinen 100. Geburtstag feiert, hat die Natur das Sagen.

Rigoroser Schutz In keinem anderen Schutzgebiet im Alpenraum wird die Natur so rigoros vor jeglichem menschlichen Einfluss bewahrt. Und das nicht erst seit ein paar Jahren. «Es gibt Areale, die seit Menschengedenken unberührt sind», erklärt Heinrich Haller, seit 1996 Direktor. Der Nationalpark ist eine Institution in der Schweiz, ein Naturheiligtum, auf das die ganze Bevölkerung stolz ist. So besuchen überdurchschnittlich viele Westschweizer den einzigen Nationalpark des Landes, für viele Schulkinder zählt ein Ausflug in den Nationalpark im Rahmen einer Schulreise zum Kürprogramm der Volksschulzeit.

Auch aus dem Ausland kommt das Publikum – rund ein Viertel der jährlich über 100‘000 Besucher – überraschend zahlreich. Sie kommen gerade wegen der Einschränkungen, die die eigentliche Unique Selling Proposition des Nationalparks sind. Denn wenn der abgedroschene Werbeslogan von der «puren Natur» an einem Ort seine Gültigkeit hat, dann im Schweizerischen Nationalpark. Wer ihn erkunden möchte, braucht nicht gleich auf eine vielstündige Wanderung aufzubrechen.

Wandertipp Empfohlen sei der Klassiker im Nationalpark, die rund dreistündige Wanderung auf dem Naturlehrpfad mit dem Sattel von Margunet (2328 m) als höchstem Punkt. Ausgangspunkt ist der Parkplatz Nr. 8 an der Ofenpassstrasse (Postautohaltestelle). Von dort aus geht es sanft ansteigend über die Alp Stabelchod hinauf nach Margunet und über das wild-romantische Val dal Botsch zum Parkplatz Nr. 6 (Postautohaltestelle beim Hotel «Il Fuorn»). Dort besteht auch eine Verpflegungsmöglichkeit. Die Wanderung ist auch für Kinder sehr gut geeignet.

NATIONAL PARK: WILDERNESS AS A UNIQUE SELLING PROPOSITION The Swiss National Park, founded in 1914, is the most strictly protected nature preserve in the Alpine region, comparable with the wilderness areas of the Serengeti or Yellowstone National Parks.

Biking is the trend sport of the summer, and those who like to think of themselves as a tourism destination offer bikers everything their hearts desire, and open up the hiking path network. Things are a little different in the Swiss National Park. Bikes are prohibited and even hikers have to scale back their activities: it is prohibited to leave the 80 kilometres of hiking paths. This is because nature is in charge in the National Park, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2014.

Rigorous protection In no other nature reserve in the Alpine region is nature so rigorously protected against human impact of any kind; and that not only recently. «There are areas that have remained untouched within living memory», Heinrich Haller, director since 1996, explains. The National Park is an institution in Switzerland, a natural treasure, of which the entire nation is proud. An above average number of western Swiss visit the only National Park of the country; for many schoolchildren, an excursion to the National Park in the context of a school trip is part of the primary school programme.

People also come from abroad; around one quarter of the more than 100,000 annual visitors – a surprisingly large number. They in fact come because of the limitations, which are the actual unique selling proposition of the National Park.

This is because, if the worn out advertising slogan of «pure nature» applies anywhere, then it is in the Swiss National Park. Those who want to explore it don‘t have to undertake a several hour hike.

Hiking tip Recommended is the classic in the National Park, the approximately three-hour hike along the nature trail with the anticline of Margunet (2,328 m) as the highest point. The starting point is parking lot no. 8 on the Ofenpassstrasse (Post auto stop). From there the route proceeds on a gentle incline over the Alp Stabelchod upwards to Margunet and through the wild-romantic Val dal Botsch to parking lot no. 6 (Post auto stop at the hotel «Il Fuorn»). There you will find a refreshment possibility. The hike is also quite suitable for children.

In the Swiss National Park there is a strict path regulation; dogs are not allowed. Around 80 kilometres of hiking paths are marked and freely accessible. Deer, chamois and rams are familiar with the marked paths in the Swiss National Park. They move about completely unhindered at a respectful distance of several hundred metres. The knowledge of the harmlessness of humans on the marked paths is passed on over animal generations. However, that doesn‘t make them incautious. They react directly when someone, against the regulations, leaves the usual paths.

This means that the shy animals can be admired with simple field glasses, though not with the naked eye. However, a little bit of luck and patience is required to experience grazing chamois from the Margunet or playing groundhogs in the Val dal Botsch up close.

Im Schweizerischen Nationalpark besteht ein striktes Wegegebot, das Mitführen von Hunden ist verboten. Rund 80 Kilometer Wanderwege sind markiert und frei zugänglich. Hirsche, Gämsen und Steinböcke kennen die markierten Wege im Schweizerischen Nationalpark. Sie bewegen sich im Respektabstand von einigen Hundert Metern völlig ungehindert. Sie reagieren unvermittelt, wenn jemand – verbotenerweise – die gewohnten Pfade verlässt.

Nicht mit blossem Auge, aber mit einfachen Feldstechern können die scheuen Tiere deshalb bewundert werden. Doch es braucht schon ein wenig Glück und Geduld, um weidende Gämsen von Margunet aus oder spielende Murmeltiere im Val dal Botsch hautnah zu erleben.

Museum und Buchhandlung Im Nationalparkmuseum kann ein digitaler Guide ausgeliehen werden, der mit Satellitenunterstützung jeweils am richtigen Ort Informationen in Ton, Bild und Text bereithält. Das in Sichtbeton gehaltene Gebäude in Zernez besticht durch seine geometrischen, klaren Formen und schafft in seiner Sachlichkeit einen gezielt gesetzten Kontrapunkt zu Alpenkitsch und Naturidylle. Empfehlenswert ist die kleine Buchhandlung, in der unter anderem auch die sehr lesenswerten Bände der Reihe «Nationalparkforschung in der Schweiz» und die Nationalparkzeitschrift «Cratschla» aufliegen.

Die Dauerausstellung bietet einige multimediale Inhalte. Besonders gelungen ist der Ausstellungsbereich «Ursprünge», der die vielfältigen Wechselwirkungen der natürlichen Prozesse aufzeigt. Und gelungen sind auch die didaktischen Inhalte für Kinder, die mit einem eigenen Führer die Ausstellung erkunden. Die Hörgeräte, die jedem Besucher mitgegeben werden, erlauben eine lehrreiche inhaltliche Vertiefung auf Knopfdruck. Wechselausstellungen und ein Informationsbereich zu Gründern, Unterstützern und Forschern runden das Angebot ab.

App zum Wandern und Entdecken Unter dem Stichwort «iwebpark» kann zum Preis von vier Franken in den Marktplätzen für iPhones und Android-Smartphones eine empfehlenswerte App zum Nationalpark installiert werden. Sie bietet neben GPS-basierten Information zu Standort und Wanderung auch viele weitere lehrreiche Inhalte. Die App ist in den Sprachen Deutsch, Französisch und Englisch erhältlich. Im Nationalpark können Geräte auch zum Tagespreis von fünf Franken geliehen werden.

Museum and book store In the National Park museum it is possible to borrow a digital guide, which, with the assistance of satellites, provides audio, visual and text information at the respective location. The faced concrete building in Zernez captivates with its geometrical, clear forms and, in its objectivity, sets a conscious counterpoint to Alpine kitsch and natural idyll. Recommended is the small book store, in which, among other things, the very readable volumes of the series «Nationalparkforschung in der Schweiz (National Park research in Switzerland)» and the National Park magazine «Cratschla» are left lying out.

The permanent exhibit offers quite a lot of multimedia content. Especially successful is the exhibit area «Origins», which demonstrates the diverse interactions of natural processes. Also successfully realised is the didactic content for children, who explore the exhibit with their own guide. The audio guides given to each visitor provide informative, more detailed information at the push of a button. Changing exhibits and an information area on founders, patrons and researchers round off the offering.

App for hiking and exploring Under the keyword «iwebpark» a recommendable app for the National Park can be installed in the shops for iPhones and Android smart phones for the price of four Swiss francs. It offers, in addition to GPS-based information on the location and the hike, a great deal of further informative content.

The app is available in German, French and English. In the National Park it is also possible to lend devices for the day price of five Swiss francs.
