EDITORIAL EDITORIAL EDITORIAL Merry Christmas As we close out the year I wish to thank you all for viewing TN magazine and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas. That’s right, Merry Christmas. That is something I don’t hear people saying much any more, many have given in to the politically correct position and adapted the “Happy Holidays” phrase; however I still believe that there is no joy without Jesus. With that said, let me share with you a thought on this past years election. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

We The People.

While I do not claim to be a political pundit, (far from it) I am barely able to grasp the basics of the political

architecture upon which our nation is built and thrives. I cannot however, but think about some things which I have heard concerning the re-election of our president. And I thought it important that I share them with you as a reminder of the power of your vote. With the president’s re-election there are some things which we simply will not get, Some you may approve of, others you may not... But here they are anyway.

The Affordable Care Act won't be repealed.

Another ultra conservative won't be appointed to the Supreme Court.

We`re not going to repeal Obamacare.

Nobody is going to kill Medicare and make seniors in this generation fight it out on the open market to try to get themselves health insurance.

We are not going to give a 20 percent tax cut to millionaires and billionaires and expect programs like food stamps and kids' health insurance to cover the cost of that tax cut.

We`re not going to make you clear it with your boss if you want to get birth control through your health plan.

We are not going to redefine rape as many Republican congressmen have tried to do.

We are not eliminating the Department of Energy or the Department of Education or Housing at the federal level.

We are not going to spend $2 trillion on the military that the military does not need to protect America.

We are not scaling back on student loans because the country`s new plan is that you should borrow money from your parents.

We are not vetoing the DREAM Act which allows many Latinos a clear path to citizenship.

We are not self-deporting undocumented immigrants.

We are not starting a trade war with China on Inauguration Day in January.

We are not going to have, as a president, a man who once led a mob of friends to run down a scared kid because he was gay.

We are not going to have as Secretary of State John Bolton. ( A former Bush-ite who equates diplomacy with weakness) We are not going to have a foreign policy crafted by the architects of the Iraq war.

All this because you and I, the American people voted, we made our voices heard and WE THE PEOPLE decided which direction our country will go!

Get Involved You Can Make A Difference

1. You have got to do it. If you want to see it... Then be it. You can’t just sit back and wait for Newark to get better all by itself. Get involved. What can you do? Seek out community meetings, volunteer, and make donations.

2. Volunteer on all levels, time, talent, and money. There are many places to help out. Park clean ups, business and private clean ups. Organize groups for trash clean ups or pick up trash at local parks and playgrounds.

3. Who are your neighbors? Do you know them? Get to know the people who live around you. In order to have a strong community it takes a team effort. You can’t do it alone, so get to know your neighbors and work together to make your community a better place to live.

4. Work to keep up and restore historical and important land sites. Don’t let them fall into disrepair of get torn down. You may need to start or participate in fundraisers that will provide the necessary funds to restore and preserve these important sites in your neighborhood.

5. Stand with your local leaders. Support them, volunteer at campaign time. Volunteer during election time. Do you know the people running your city? Why not? Reach out to them, research and become educated on prospective candidate, get to know the issues, and of course remember to to vote.

6. Keep Watch. Start a neighborhood watch. Help to keep Newark safe. Help to get the community involved and looking out for each other. When neighbors look out for each other they keep their neighborhoods safe.

7. Don’t lose hope. Be patient. Remember that transforming our city will not happen over night... It takes persistence and determination.

I remember what my opinion of ministers used to be before I got saved. I generally lumped all ministers into one category. They are all hungry for money. I really didn’t understand the difference between an Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor or Teacher. all I saw was a bunch of Jesus freaks on TV that were always asking for money. But one day God laid me down on a sick bed (I had a lupus flare up) and spoke to me and let it be known that I would preach His word. At the time I didn’t know what was going on. I wasn’t going to church and didn’t know His word.

Flash forward to 2008 and there I was standing in front of my peers in the front of the church being licensed as a minister. I was now licensed to preach and teach the word of God. I was a licensed minister. It was while I was in seminary that I found out what a real minister was. I learned that a minister is a servant, a servant of God and a servant to people. That’s what I was missing when I was younger. I didn’t understand the true definition of minister. I didn’t understand that being a minister wasn’t about getting rich, but being humble, submissive and obedient.

As a minister and a ministry leader the Lord has allowed me to see a non distorted view of christianity.

He has allowed to be a witness to the reality of ministry up close and personal. I have been given the privilege to see that christianity is a universal relationship that God the Father has with all nations not just America. I have had the opportunity to associate with ministers and pastors from all over the world.

I have seen what the real need for ministers (servants) are. There is a lost and dying world that needs us.

They need people to serve them with the spiritual food that comes from the word of God. They need people that will care for them enough to give them a bowl of soup and a piece of bread. They need someone that will love them enough to give them clothes and shelter. They need someone that will be patient enough to let them cry on their shoulder and listen to them when they are hurting. They need someone to be in the same room with them when they are lonely.

They need someone to tell them that they are loved.

Thank God for His ministers (servants).

St. Matthew AME Church Presents New Pastor Rev. Dr. Lanel D. Guyton

Rev. Dr. Lanel D. Guyton & wife Tanzania Bishop Gregory G. M. Ingram, Presiding Bishop of the First Episcopal District, appoints Rev. Dr. Lanel D. Guyton as the pastor of St. Matthew AME Church, Orange, New Jersey. This announcement was made at the closing session of First Episcopal District's Fall Convocation which took place at Mt. Pisgah AME Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Rev. Lanel Guyton becomes St. Matthew's tenth pastor.

This historic announcement comes as a result of the elevation to bishopric by the Rt. Rev. Reginald T. Jackson Executive Director of the Black Ministers' Council - who's pastorate at St. Matthew came to an end today after serving for 31 years (1981-2012). The Rt. Rev. Jackson is the 132nd Elected and Consecrated Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Rev. Guyton, with the support of his wife Tanzania, assumes pastoral charge and will preached his first sermon to the St. Matthew congregation on Sunday, November 18 at the church's 70th Anniversary.

Rev. Guyton is a fourth generation preacher, pastor, teacher, and servant of God. Rev. Guyton celebrates two daughters and one son; Lashon, Gisselle, and Lloyd.

Prior to this appointment, Rev. Guyton pastored at St. Paul AME Church, Bermuda.

Rev. Guyton has since been a servant-leader on a mission to "...equip the saints for the work of ministry." His preaching and teaching focuses on the liberating gospel of Jesus Christ, crucified and resurrected, with the intent of lifting up a Savior to masses. Rev. Guyton has a divine purpose to fulfill God's mandate of kingdom building on earth.

Rev. Guyton has received numerous awards and acclamations while attending Delta Community College, in Stockton, California where he earned an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice; Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina where he earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Sociology/Social Work; and Turner Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center, where he earned a Master's of Divinity. While matriculating at Allen University he became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. In 2009, he attended United Theological Seminary in Dayton Ohio, where he earned a Doctorate Degree. The doctoral project title: Transformation and Transition: Empowering the Church Toward Creating a Relevant Ministry for Today and Tomorrow.

Rev. Guyton was assigned to his first charge in May of 1998, at St. James A.M.E. Church in Mays Landing, New Jersey. Since then he has served on the Board of Examiners for the New Jersey and Philadelphia Conferences; Treasurer of the "Progressive" Harrisburg District, Philadelphia Conference; and the Dean of the Institute for the Bermuda Annual Conference Board of Examiners. He is also a member of the Self-Help Board for the First Episcopal District; former member of the Uptown Market Association's Board of Directors in Bermuda, a community activist organization; holds a Teacher's Certification for the state of Pennsylvania, and a Certificate of Eligibility to teach in the state of New Jersey. Rev. Guyton has also matriculated at California State University, earning credits towards a Principal's certification.

Life Transformation Health Care Without “Health Care”?

While many may now be unemployed and without Heath Care Insurance, health care is still available. One such facility is the UMDNJ Hospital/NJ Medical School.

No Requirements

The UMDNJ Student Family Healthcare Center is available to all residents of the Newark community. There are no eligibility requirements and there are no charges for services provided in the clinic.

Student Family Health Care Clinic is a free clinic that is also a learning experience for students. Patients generally arrive at 5:45 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. They first meet with a team of about 5 students. The team is a group of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students. Because they are still learning, They are l thorough so nothing is missed. This means asking a lot of questions and doing a complete physical exam. Some things may be done a couple of times to make sure it’s correct. The younger students will take the lead on asking questions and performing the physical exam while the older students guide them. They may also take time to explain what they are thinking to the younger students while they are still in the room.

The teams then meet with a doctor who has completed their Full physical exams training. There is only one doctor Urine tests at each session to see the 6 Blood tests patients that are scheduled.

EKG’s (test to check the heart) Luckily, the teams have already Pelvic exams done most of the work when the Medicine given to the patient doctor arrives. They tell the Health Education doctor what they have found, Prescriptions for other medicines and the doctor makes a plan for Referrals to specialized clinics within the patient with the team.

UMDNJ Afterwards, the patient meets with the team and doctor. There may be a few more questions and a quick physical exam before the plan is discussed with the patient. Every patient gets

counseling and education about the medical problems they have come into the clinic with. The plan can include medication or additional tests.

While all services provided in the Student Family Healthcare Center are provided free of charge often times patients require blood work or other referrals that are not covered. Patients are advised to apply for charity care through University Hospital to assist in paying for these services.

Charity Care Unlike Medicaid and Family Care, which provides ongoing coverage for healthcare services, including physician services and drugs, Charity Care is designed to provide assistance to cover the costs of hospital services only. In order to apply for Charity Care, you must have a scheduled appointment in the hospital within 30 days and have been registered in the hospital's computer system or have received a hospital bill within the last 12 months. You should know that your immigration status doesn't matter when you apply for Charity Care - it will not affect your eligibility.

The staff from the Financial Counseling Department will assist you with the application. The application will be forwarded to the hospital's Patient Accounts department and a decision about your eligibility will be made within 10 business days.

Prosecutor's Office Appoints First African-American Woman As Deputy Chief The Essex county prosecutors office announced that a new deputy chief of detectives was sworn in on November 16th 2012.

The first African-American woman to hold that ranking position.

After over 14 years with the Prosecutor’s office Ms. Quovella Spruill was actually named acting deputy chief several months prior. The ceremony was held at the Leroy Smith JR. Building with is near the Essex County Courthouse here in Newark.

Ms. Spruill’s new position of deputy chief places her appointment as the second highest ranking officer just under the Chief of Detectives. She started out as a county investigator in 1998 and has risen from detective to lieutenant, to acting captain, and from captain to her current new position, Ms. Spruill has served in the homicide, special victims, and professional standards bureau units.

“I think it’s the toughest decision we have to make, to decide who to promote,” said Chief of Detectives Anthony Ambrose. “I think this office has a lot of talent. But today we’re talking about a young lady I met five years ago who really shined.”

Ambrose, who said he routinely receives texts on work matters from Spruill throughout the night, went on to recount a sexual assault investigation in a suburban town a few years ago.

“She went in and took over....I got into the car and I told Paula Dow [the county prosecutor at the time] ‘Wow, I’m really impressed’.”

“Q” as she is known by, has been praised by former Attorney General, then Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow for her efforts and Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray for being, “a tremendous asset with extraordinary leadership abilities and inexhaustible energy.”

Quovella Spruill is a Newark native and a graduate from NJIT with an engineering degree, and also holds a master’s degree from Seton Hall University. She is married, and a mother of two. “Newark is my home no matter where I lay my head, and Essex County is in my heart,” said the new deputy chief during her remarks.

Business Transformation

Making Your Team Great In just about all of our endeavors we will be called into working as part of a team. Whether it is business or ministry we have all been a part of a project team at some point. And while there comes a sense of camaraderie toward the common goal there will also be challenges as well.

Still the ability to “work well� with others is paramount to leadership and simply necessary in order to get things done. Know those who have difficulty working with others will find themselves relegated to secondary positions at best.

So how do you transition from working as an individual to working as a team?

Here are a few things that all great team members do.

1. They don’t bring their egos with them. No one wants to work with a “know it all”. Teams are created because any organization realizes that people bring a mix of skills and strengths together to find solutions to their problems.

Don’t boast about your skills or issues you’ve resolved in the past, If you are as good as you think; your team members will soon recognize your talents.

2. They are open to compromise. Remember theres no “I” in team, so our thought process must be different. We must focus on whats best for the team, and it may involve setting asides our preferred practices, rules, and work flows.

3. They are good listeners. Believe it or not the best team members don’t always feel a need to be heard. You can participate through listening and thus become more informed and able to provide a deeper insight to overcoming the challenge when you do speak. They often become “the voice of reason.”

4. They receive constructive criticism. Great team members have come to realize that criticism provides feedback for adjustments and new ideas to build upon. They accept this new input with an open mind and with the possibility of exploring the alternatives. Yet when they are lead to provide critique, they are respectful, direct, and often inspirational to the betterment of the issue.

5. They give it their all. Often times members will “hide in the group”. No one taking the responsibility for the task at hand. The best members take responsibility, they are willing to have the buck stop with them, they are not passive participants, and they come to the scheduled meetings having done the work which should have been done since the previous meeting.

6. They are understand that changes will occur. Things will not always go smoothly. Problems and unexpected setbacks will occur. Great team member stay focused and don’t let problems take the wind out of their sails, they just seem to “go with the flow”.

Remember that when you become a part of a project team, keep in mind that although you will work as a group, you’re only as successful as the individuals within the group. There’s no “I” in team but there is a “I” in WIN. So in order for your team to WIN you must be willing to have the attitude which says... “I” will do my best for the overall goal of my team.

ARE YOU A LEADER...

OR A MANAGER? We Need More Leaders not Managers Leaders are distinct from managers. Leaders are transformational. They have a vision for the future; be it personal and or organizational. Managers take care of what already exists. They are stewards and are focused on what is before the them and how to maintain it. While there is an abundance of managers in the workplace, the home, and in ministry; We are lacking true leadership in all of these areas.

1. Leadership is Key. This has nothing to do with position, authority, nor titles, salary, nor office size. While they are helpful, they are not absolutely necessary. Leadership, it has been said “enables a group to grow so they can face their toughest challenges.” Since leadership is often about change and we are by nature resistant to change; there will always be (to some degree) a resistance to leadership. Leadership is about future and possibility, progress, and transformation. And we will always need someone to lead the way into the very future which we are battling against everyday..

• an organization or company that is the most advanced or successful in a particular area: a leader in the use of video conferencing.

• (also Leader of the House )Brit.a member of the government officially responsible for initiating business in Parliament.

• a conductor of a band or small musical group.

2. Leadership is Functional. Leaders act. Leaders do. While talking is an action, an leaders must be able to communicate, great leaders are know for the work that they do - they take action instead of just talking about it.

Leaders are not about blaming they are about bring about the solution to the problems. They stick it out and work from within and through the system.

Even when the leader may not know what to do; their action is to get to work learning what to do.

3. Leadership is developed. Leadership can be taught. It is a skill. Some would say that leaders are made and not born, however any person who is willing to take personal responsibility, convene a group to work on a tough problem and persist in the face of resistance is a leader. It is the education from the experience of leadership which causes us to be better leaders.

And so as Jesus sent forth his disciples two by two, who later returned with a report of the amazing things they were able to do so must we do also.

Leadership is developed by functioning in a leadership role. Or as Nike would say, “Just Do It.” And it is from that “action” taken that leadership is recognized and realized.

So You Want To Be A Preacher Consider This One of the things that I have discovered as a preacher of the word of God is the need for study and consistency. There is a need for a constant and serious study of God’s word and a need for a constant and serious proclamation of God’s word. It is easy to get wrapped up in the who and how others are presenting the word of God. But I believe it is important to remember a few things.

God created you so be yourself: I remember when I preached my first sermon.

I was nervous and anxious. I didn’t know what to expect, I didn’t know what the response would be. My mouth was dry and my heart was beating fast, and I just went through my sermon at a hundred miles per hour. I remember that I wanted to sound and act like some of the preachers I would see on TV. But the Lord reminded me that it was okay for me to be myself. He created me for a specific

purpose and that purpose wasn’t to pretend to be someone else. He created me to preach His message to His people. He doesn’t want his messengers to be actors on stage. He wants his messengers to be honest about who God is and what God has done for a fallen humanity.

Preach the Word: I know that may seem to be an obvious thing. But the sad reality is there are plenty of preachers out there that are saying everything else but what the word of God says. I believe that they may mean well. They are trying to help people change their lives and their actions. They want to motivate people to do the right things and live the right way. But it is important to remember that we are proclaimers of the gospel. Not just motivational speakers. I know that I have a desire to motivate and encourage people to change their actions. But it isn’t my responsibility to change people. That responsibility belongs to a sovereign and all powerful God. Who changes people through His Holy Spirit.

Remember who you are talking to: It is really easy to be wrapped up in the sermon preparation. The bible study, reading concordances and commentary.

Looking at maps and encyclopedias and history books. But the best advice I ever received came from a pastor friend of mine who reminded me to “know your audience.” There will be times when it is appropriate to go into the deep waters of theology. And there are times when it’s fitting to just give the basics. Know the people you are preaching to.

Don’t be afraid to interact with people: I’m not just talking about church folk either. I mean don’t be afraid to be around people. That is an area of my life that I struggle with daily. I am a member of the Recluse Club. You know the group of people that stay away from people. But the Lord has shown me that the only way I can be effective as a minister is to be around people. That way I get to address the real issues real people are going through while presenting the gospel to them. This is the only way I get to know people and they get to know me

Pray, Pray, and Pray some more: Prayer is the most essential keys to being a preacher. remember it is through prayer that God is able to communicate to you what it is He wants you to tell His people. It is through prayer that God reveals to you the needs of the people. It is through prayer that God is able to help you first which will give you the ability to help others. When you pray remember this one very crucial step. Stop and take the time to listen. Don’t just jump up but take the time to allow God to speak to you. What we have to say is not as important as what God has to say.

Life Transformation Do You Really Need to Be Gluten Free?

While many people are talking about gluten and there has become a plethora of “gluten free� products on the market due to the stomach discomfort associate with eating products which contain gluten, the fact is that gluten is a protein, and not the problem.

The problem is Celiac Disease.

The Cause The cause of Celiac Disease (CD), also known as celiac sprue or gluten sensitive enteropathy (GSE), is still a mystery. But one out of 133 people in the United States is affected with celiac disease. CD occurs in 5-15% of the offspring and siblings of a person with celiac disease. In 70% of identical twin pairs, both twins have the disease. It is strongly suggested that family members be tested, even if asymptomatic. Family members who have an autoimmune are at a 25% increased risk of having celiac disease.

An Allergy Celiac Disease is not a food allergy - it is an autoimmune disease. Food allergies, including wheat allergy, are conditions that people can sometimes grow out of. This is not the case with Celiac Disease.

Symptoms Celiac Disease can appear at any time in a person’s life.

In adults, the disease can be triggered for the first time after surgery, viral infection, severe emotional stress, pregnancy or childbirth. CD is a multi-system, multi-symptom disorder.

Symptoms vary and are not always gastrointestinal (GI).

GI symptoms can often mimic other bowel disorders.

Celiac Disease (CD) is lifelong inherited autoimmune condition that affects both children and adults. When people who have CD eat foods that contain gluten, it causes an immune reaction that results in damage to the small intestine and does not allow nutrients to be properly absorbed. Damage can be present in the small intestine even when there are no symptoms. Currently, the only treatment is strict adherence to the gluten-free diet.

Gluten is the common name for the proteins in specific grains that are harmful to persons with celiac disease.

These proteins are found in ALL forms of wheat including durum,semolina, spelt, amut, einkorn and faro) and related grains rye, barley and riticale and MUST be eliminated.

Infants, toddlers and young children with CD may often exhibit growth failure, vomiting, bloated abdomen, behavioral changes and failure to thrive.

Diagnosis A person seeking diagnosis MUST be following a daily diet that contains gluten for at least 4 weeks in order for test results to be accurate. Specific antibody blood tests are the initial step in screening for CD. Patients should always consult with a physician to ensure proper diagnosis.

The good news is that all fresh fruits, vegetables, beef, chicken, fish, lamb, pork and dairy products are naturally gluten-free.

Grains/Flours Rice, corn (maize), soy, potato, tapioca, beans, garfava, sorghum, quinoa, millet, buckwheat, arrowroot, amaranth, teff, Montina®, flax, and nut flours. Wines and hard liquor/distilled beverages are gluten-free.

Beers, ales, lagers and malt ARE NOT. The good news is that all fresh fruits, vegetables, beef, chicken, fish, lamb, pork and dairy products are naturally gluten-free.

6 Ways to Empower Your Team At the core of most leaders is the fact that they are most comfortable when they are in control. This is one of the qualities which causes them to be successful. Yet we will often think that we can do it on our own even though in our hearts we know that it isn’t practical nor even true.

But to build and sustain a successful organization that will go beyond your abilities you must empower those around you.

So how exactly do you empower your team? Here are a few thoughts.

1. Allow team members to make decisions, ‘ and don’t second guess them.

Many leaders will allow team members to oversee projects, yet, we are mindful to jump in and make tweaks when things aren’t headed as we have envisioned.

It is demoralizing and disappointing to those whom you have given authority to, to have it suddenly snatched away and them given back on a point by point basis.

2. Have them own their projects from beginning to end.

Once responsibility has been given, it is in their hands. Should you suddenly feel as though they are incapable of handling the task, know that its NOT their fault.

It was the leaders poor decision to place them in that position in the first place.

3. Have their backs.

You may have to standup for them against a higher authority or you may have to stand in support of them when another team member disagrees; either way you should “have their backs” and be willing to go to battle for them.

4. Encourage, Coach, and Instruct.

We all need encouragement. We need to know that someone believes in us and that we are up to the task.

Great coaches know what to do to get the maximum performance from their players... They know what “buttons to push”, what to say, what not to say, and how to say, it to move the team forward.

Encouragement tells them they can do it, Coaching pushes them to do it, but Instruction empowers them with the knowledge of how to do it.

5. Stretch them.

Its is good from time to time to give assignments “just above their heads”. This is how growth and self-confidence occurs. Its OK that they feel overwhelmed every now and then... It keeps them sharp, focused, and studying to be better.

6. Give permission.

Let them know that it is OK to take some risks. Let them know they are a representative of the organization. Let them know that you want them to take on responsibility. Give them permission to disagree, to push back, and to respectfully challenge you when they feel as though they have a valid reason.

These steps will not only empower your team but lead to a new level effectiveness in your business, organization or ministry.
