Nicholas Metivier Gallery is thrilled to present Hummingbird,an exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by acclaimed Vancouver-based artist Landon Mackenzie, opening Saturday, April 26th.

Hummingbirdfeatures some of the latest works in Landon Mackenzie's ongoing series of immersive 'Particle' paintings. The paintings begin on the foor of her Vancouver studio, starting with droplets of acrylic paint that gradually develop a loose narrative that Mackenzie responds to with intellect and intuition.

In this case, she likened the subtle pattern of coloured 'particles' to the darting and hovering movements of a hummingbird. Hummingbirds are driven by an intense attraction to colour and migrate by instinct, guided by the number of hours of sunlight in a day and their internal biological calendar. When standing in front of the paintings, distinct forest green or navy pathways start to emerge from a sea of pinks and reds, evoking a fight path of the small, energetic birds that visit Mackenzie's studio locations in PEI and BC each summer. The artist invites viewers to consider the magic and perspective of the tiny hummingbird.
