EDWARD BURTYNSKY

ART TORONTO FEATURE PRESENTATION

BOOTH 109 | October 29 - November 1, 2026 Metro Toronto Convention Centre, North Building

THE VAULT COLLECTION For the 2026 edition of Art Toronto, Nicholas Metivier Gallery will present The Vault Collection a selection of some of Edward Burtynsky’s rarest and most important photographs dating from 1985 to 2016. "This release is, for me, a moment of reflection. Over more than four decades of making photographs, certain images have come to stand as markers along the path of my thinking about industry, landscape, and the scale of human ambition. Many of the works on view have long since sold out, but by returning to the vault and selecting a small number of artist proofs from my own archive, along with presenting a few of these photographs at a scale that was not possible at the original time of release due to material and technological restrictions, I’ve had the opportunity to revisit them with fresh eyes. Assembling this selection of prints allowed me to rediscover the ideas that first compelled me to make them, while also recognizing how their meaning continues to evolve over time." - Edward Burtynsky

WORLD PREMIERE Nicholas Metivier Gallery will also premiere two new photographs from Burtynsky’s forthcoming project, Mining: For the Future. Released following Burtynsky’s 2025 journey through Western Australia, these powerful new works mark a return to one of the defining subjects of his career: mining, a theme he has explored since the mid-1980s. Turning his lens toward some of the world’s largest mines, Burtynsky reveals the surreal landscapes producing lithium, copper and cobalt that are behind the global transition to clean electricity. From his signature aerial vantage point, he transforms immense industrial operations into images of breathtaking scale, while creating unexpected abstractions of vivid colour, texture, and form.
