EDWARD BURTYNSKY RARE EARTH
May 11th – June 8th, 2024
RareEarthfeatures photographs from Edward Burtynsky’s latest explorations in Turkey, Australia, British Columbia, and California. Never-before-released images of Iceland from Burtynsky’s acclaimed Water series will also make their debut in this exhibition.
'Rare Earth' refers to any of 17 scarce chemical elements that make various new technologies possible, from electric cars and headphones to electronic miniaturisation and new kinds of glass and ceramics. These elements, and the techniques we use to acquire them, have been an interest of Burtynsky’s since the 1980s. Also featured in this exhibition are images of the Coast Mountains in British Columbia, some of the very few glaciers left on the planet at this latitude; now a rarity themselves.
In February 2024, Burtynsky:Extraction/Abstraction , a major retrospective of the photographer’s work opened at the Saatchi Gallery in London, UK. The exhibition is on view at Saatchi until May 6th .
