FIRST STEPS IN FAITH
by Holland Village Methodist Church
The genesis of this youth mission trip began at the end of 2023, when several youths approached us with an interest in participating in a mission trip. Encouraged by their enthusiasm, we set out to make their vision a reality.

Preparation for this project was challenging due to our inexperience and the tight timeline. However, we witnessed God’s guidance and provision through His people. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Sarah for her role in training the team; the Holland Village Methodist Church (HVMC) congregation for their generosity in funding the team and activities; pastors, church leaders, and parents for their unwavering support; and MMS for their invaluable advice during the planning and preparation stages.

Our team, comprising nine youths and four accompanying adults, visited Timor-Leste from 24 to 30 November 2024. During the trip, we supported St Paul Methodist School in their post-exam activities, which included running programmes for students, packing and distributing compassion packs to underprivileged Timorese families, and assisting with their annual 24-hour skipping challenge. Below are reflections from some of our team members on their experiences:

This trip gave me valuable insight into the lives of the Timorese. Witnessing their community gather and praise the Lord revealed God’s presence in their daily lives.
I am grateful for the opportunity to strengthen my relationship with God and to learn how to prioritise and love Him more.

This trip was an eye-opening experience. From interacting with the children to distributing compassion packs to the villages, it was a humbling reminder of how privileged we are and how much we should appreciate our blessings.
It was also a wonderful opportunity to bond with our HVMC team and to build relationships with the staff and students in Timor-Leste.

I was nervous at first as I had no prior experience with mission trips. Then I came across Psalm 33, which reminded me that all our strength comes from God and that He ultimately decides the outcome. Throughout the trip, I focused on this truth, trusting that everything would work out.
One memorable moment was praying for the students. Seeing their comfort in response to our prayers was deeply moving. While I had the opportunity to minister to others, I also learnt to appreciate the blessings in my life and, most importantly, to place my faith in God.

If I were to summarise my experience from this mission trip in one word, it would be “Embrace”.
Firstly, to “Embrace God”. The Timorese we met demonstrated a wholehearted embrace of faith. Children and adults alike worshipped with uninhibited hearts, singing loudly and praying fervently. Their 24-hour prayer room, where someone is always praying for Timor, taught me the importance of maintaining a heart posture focused on God in prayer and worship.
Secondly, to “Embrace Timor”. Despite being one of the least developed countries, Timor-Leste possesses a unique beauty. Its simplicity and strong sense of community shine through its people, who are kind, willing to help others, and unbothered by what the world considers challenges.
Lastly, to “Embrace Self”. Managing my pre-existing medical condition while contributing to the school’s activities was challenging, yet God sent comfort in unexpected ways, like a spontaneous hug from a student. This reminded me of the reciprocity of giving and receiving love in God’s kingdom.

This trip has left me with joyful memories and valuable lessons. I am thankful to have witnessed God’s hand at work. The journey was fruitful in many ways, with God as our ultimate Provider, blessing us even in unexpected situations.
Our team grew closer, and I formed lasting friendships with the students of SPMS. The Grade 1 students’ love, a special friendship, and a young girl who felt like a younger sister have touched my heart and inspired me to return to Timor-Leste if God calls me again.

This mission trip was filled with learning, thanksgiving, and love. Initially, I felt afraid, unsure of what God would use me to do, and worried about making mistakes. After praying for a student for the first time, I questioned whether I had done enough. However, Joshua 1:9 reminded me to be strong and brave, trusting that God would be with me wherever I go.
Visiting the community and meeting the locals was another blessing. Their kindness, smiles, and gifts deeply touched me. Despite challenges like tiredness, rain, and early mornings, we persevered with God’s strength. I will always remember the joy of this adventure and the SPMS motto: “Move in faith, live in hope, and exist in love.”

This trip was truly amazing. I experienced a new culture, formed bonds with the students and teachers, and learnt to rely on God’s strength throughout the week. Despite challenges like illness and fatigue, God’s power was magnified in my struggles.
This unforgettable experience has helped me grow as a Christian, and I eagerly look forward to the next mission trip.

This trip opened my eyes to the fervent spirit of worship among the Timorese children. During the 24-hour skipping challenge, most of the children sang praises, ending every worship session with the doxology. Their dedication to worship deeply moved me.

On the third day, we were assigned to deliver compassion packs to a remote location. As someone who isn’t very active, I initially dreaded the task. However, the cooler weather that day felt like God’s provision and protection.
During ‘Ministry Time’, I prayed for someone for the first time. Though nervous, I felt God’s presence, and the experience brought tears and a profound sense of His love.
