“What then is this child going to be?” So often, as we prepare for the birth of Jesus, we revisit Luke Chapter 2. This season, I am encouraging you to also consider reading and thinking about Luke Chapter 1. Zechariah and Elizabeth, then childless, received a visit from the Angel Gabriel, who foretold them about the incredible and unexpected birth of their son, John. This amazing experience was so unusual that the people asked, “What then is this child going to be?” Zechariah then went on to praise God in a song about their son proclaiming, yes, prophesying, that John would prepare the way for the Lord. “And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death to guide our feet into the path of peace.”~ Luke 1:76-79 NIV Verse 80 continues, “And the child grew and became strong in spirit…” I wonder whenever a child is born, does someone ask, “What then is this child going to be?” The neighborhood asked it about John; surely Mary and Joseph asked it about Jesus; perhaps even your parents asked it about YOU.

And even though many of the kids we serve at The Methodist Home arrive as teenagers, we wonder, “What then is this child going to be?” You are an important part of the answer for our children. I believe they have as much potential as every other child because of Jesus’ life from the Manger to the Cross; but I also believe WE need to help them grow and become strong in spirit. Will you make a thoughtful gift this Christmas so they can grow closer to God and be strengthened in spirit? Will you help us lead them toward the light of Christ? Because of your kindness, we can guide them through the darkness of the struggles in life and teach them about the love of God. Lessons from Nick

Nick starts each day the same way, with prayer. “Everyday I wake up and pray, because everyday is not guaranteed. I pray after I wake up and before I go to sleep,” he shared. “I do what I’m supposed to do in God’s eyes and I try to do the best with what He has given me.” Nick arrived at our St. Marys campus earlier this year in January. Already, he has felt the impact of the love, care, and support of The Methodist Home. 4

Since the young age of seven, Nick has only known a life of living in foster care. Despite the dismal statistics, Nick has overcome the odds. In his junior year of high school, he is passing all his classes and is excited to join the ROTC program. Nick enjoys school and loves to read and sing. He even writes his own songs. Nick feels safe at St. Marys. He shared, “If I mess up, I know Ms. Myra (Program Manager) will be there to catch me.” Nick wants to learn from his mistakes and continue growing to be his absolute best. “I have not always been good but over the years I have matured. I’ve learned to respect people, to let things go, what to do and what not to do in difficult situations. I have grown so much as a person because there are so many experiences that I’ve gone through with the support of my staff. You can tell the staff cares from the bottom of their hearts and it means so much to me. At the end of the day I know I am cared for and loved.” Thanksgiving and Christmas are holidays Nick is very much looking forward to this year. Thanksgiving is a festive time and Christmas is loved by all residents, staff, and the community. Every year St. Marys puts on a show of lights. The decorations and lights are put up by the youth and staff. The kids are involved every step of the way. The scene will change from year to year because it is a true reflection and expression of our youths’ creativity. Nick is excited to be a part of this tradition and we are so grateful he will be surrounded by love and support this holiday season!

Travis is Aiming High Travis* arrived at The Carpenter’s Way Ranch earlier this year and has been making the most of his time at The Methodist Home. Through various clubs and school teams, Travis has been able to connect with his community. He has found joy on the Cybersecurity team, Archery team, and Technology Student Association (TSA). Cybersecurity teams of Harris County High School compete in the CyberPatriot Games, created by the Air Force Association, with the aim of sparking the interest of students in the fields of cybersecurity and related fields. The goal is to learn to secure a computer and Travis loves the challenge! He loves figuring out the puzzle, strategizing, and also the knowledge he gains. Travis’ mother and foster parents instilled in him the importance of education. Continued growth and learning are values Travis holds close to his heart and it is evident in the good grades he makes in school. Travis looks forward to all his activities, but is especially looking forward to his first Archery competition. Archery is a 4-H Youth Development sport sponsored through the University of Georgia’s Forage program. This allows Travis to compete around the state with his teammates and friends. Travis shared

why he enjoys Archery. “It is not just about strength; it is about the mindset you have and your focus. If you don’t focus on your target then you will not shoot it. Even when you are completely focusing, there are outside factors you have to account for and pay attention to and I think that is also true about the life we live.” Kind, honest, helpful, and a great sense of humor are just a few of the words Travis’ peers would use to describe him. He has high expectations for himself and wants to reach his goals. Travis also wants to help people. He shared, “helping people is something my mom taught me to do. I want to do it even though I have trouble helping myself sometimes. I have made a lot of mistakes in my life which means I have learned a lot. I can help by teaching others from my mistakes. I don’t want to see others go down the wrong path.” Travis also has a heart of gratitude. He looks back at his past and is grateful for the people who cared for him. He is thankful for The Methodist Him and the kindness he received upon arrival. Travis is half-way through his first year of high school and we know there is more greatness to come. The Joy of Baptism by Dr. Josh Gale

Baptism is a sacred and joyful sacrament in the Christian faith, a profound symbol of God’s care and spiritual renewal. As I remember hearing it defined as a child, “baptism represents a covenant with God that transcends the boundaries of place and circumstance.” This sentiment becomes especially helpful in places like The Methodist Home, where the circumstances of our youth and children are typically covered with in thick veils of darkness and hurt. But recently, we got to celebrate the in-breaking of God’s light at the chapel when a young lady chose to be baptized. She told me she wanted to recognize God as the north 6

star of her life and to dedicate her life to God’s goodness. Her story, like many others, reminds me of the following verse that represents the impetus for Christ’s first proclamation of the gospel, according to Matthew: “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.” (4:16) This young lady’s baptism stands as a testimony that bears witness to Christ’s truth of salvation. Whatever her route in life beyond here, her story, which up to this point

had been marred with hurt due to separation from her home and even her siblings, has now become bound with God’s in an undeniable way. The Psalmist says it this way: “I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— but even in darkness I cannot hide from you…” (139:11-12)

moment as mine. Her moment to witness a different kind of new life—not born as a baby in Bethlehem—but reborn as a 15-year-old girl right here in Macon, being caressed into the care of the Kingdom. This is the transcendental and spiritual work of The Methodist Home. Amen!

The Methodist Home, with its walls that echo the stories of lives lived, joys and sorrows shared, and the challenges faced, bears witness to the complexities of the human experience. It is a place where many of society's marginalized children are invited to find refuge and care. In the midst of such a setting, it is hard to overstate how loudly the baptism of a young lady proclaims hope and how firmly it stands as a reminder that God's grace knows no boundaries! The act of baptism is not just a ritual; it is a deeply spiritual experience, an acknowledgment that she is loved, cherished, and accepted by God for who she is. It signifies that she is not defined by her circumstances or past, but by the unconditional love and forgiveness of the Creator. It also speaks to the power of community. On that day, staff, residents, and fellow believers came together to support and celebrate this sacred moment. They affirmed her as a part of the larger family of God, offering their prayers and encouragement as she embarks on her journey of faith. And now, you, too, get to celebrate that she is a member of Christ’s church—of YOUR church! I mean, my goodness, what better Advent reflection is there than to watch God at work in this young lady’s life?! She might be looking to God as her new, guiding light, like shepherds looking for baby Jesus, but, in a strange way, I’m looking at her baptismal TheMethodistHome.org • GATEWAY WINTER 2023 7

Strengthening Families Through Generations Grandparent’s Day is a special day for our kids at Eagle’s Nest Children’s Center! On this day, time is set aside to be intentional and bond with generations of families. You can tell by the sweet smiles on our kids’ faces and the equally heartwarming affection returned by their grandparents that these are meaningful moments being shared. Eagle’s Nest provides opportunities for the children in our care to create wonderful and loving memories. The Methodist Home is grateful to serve and strengthen families through generations!

Fall Festivities! Recently, our kids at Price Academy had a wonderful time at their Fall Festival! Their joy could not be contained as they played games and painted pumpkins to celebrate the seasonal change. Our girls and boys work so hard in school. Often times, because of their circumstances, they are behind academically. At Price Academy they have the ability to regain, rebuild and relearn knowledge that was lost along their journey. Opportunities like playing Fall games, watching spooky movies with friends, or having fun with pumpkins can inspire them creatively and energetically. We are grateful to provide the space and environment for our girls and boys to thrive as students AND as children! 8

Fun at the Fair!

Every year we all look forward to the Georgia National Fair. Whether it is the fair food, the rides, or the attractions, there is always something for everyone to enjoy. This year was particularly memorable for one of our girls in Valdosta. Jackie* had been to the Fair when she was younger, but had not felt brave enough to try any of the rides. This time she was older and more courageous, especially with her friends at her side. She had a blast experiencing her first roller coaster ride ever and getting to see the view from the top of the Ferris Wheel. It was also Jackie’s first-time having bacon cheddar fries and deep-fried Oreos. She loved every bite! We are so grateful Jackie was able to make such sweet and fun memories. We love seeing our youth just being kids and we are thankful to help restore childhoods! *Name changed for privacy

Quilts: A Labor of Love! Irwinville Methodist Church recently held their annual Quilt Show and donated beautiful handmade quilts to The Home. We are so grateful for the continued labor of love from these dedicated individuals. They are truly making a difference in the lives of our children, one stitch at a time!

Christoper's Journey to Success Christopher was only in the first grade when his grandmother felt like everyone was giving up on him. As a result of his turbulent behavior and difficulty learning, Christopher was sent to schools and put in classes that would support students like him; youth who had a tough time staying focused. However, his grandmother knew there was more that could be done. 10

“I wanted to give him all the tools to help him succeed, to be the best version of himself he could possibly be. I knew deep down there were too many resources out there that can help get a child on the right track. Lighthouse for Families gave Christopher those resources and a real chance to improve,” she shared.

Receiving a proper diagnosis completely changed Christopher’s circumstances. He finally had a fighting chance. With additional support behind him, his grandmother found some peace. She shared, “I thank God they helped me understand what I did not understand. I brought Lighthouse the problems we were facing at home and at school. They were professional, caring, and they took the time to understand.” Over seven years later with support from Lighthouse for Families, Christopher is doing better than ever. He loves playing sports like football, basketball, and wrestling. He enjoys spending time outdoors and learning to play the baritone. Christopher is full of joy and curiosity and has learned how to harness his energy to better focus. He shared, “my counselor has taught me so many things that have helped me at school and at home.” Christopher looks forward to new experiences and learning every day. He wants to play on the football team at school and learn to play the saxophone. Christopher’s grandmother is so proud of his accomplishments. She said, “we had some difficulties at first, but it was beautiful to see him wanting to play an instrument. It was a great sign of how

well he was doing and gave me so much hope.” As his focus improved so did his grades. Pretty soon, Christopher was placed in regular classes again. Lighthouse for Families taught him how and when to take breaks, how to deal with difficult tasks, and gave him useful exercises. Christopher learned how to be aware of his emotions and control his reactions. Furthermore, he learned how to have fun again. He gained the understanding that it is okay to be unique and everybody learns in different ways. Lighthouse for Families was the beginning of a new chapter for Christopher. His grandmother loved the counselor’s approachability, respectfulness, and loving care. Yet, they still remained professional. She shared, “I encourage parents and family members to invest in a child that is a little different; don’t write them off. Do your research and find organizations like Lighthouse for Families to assist you.” All children have greatness in them and the ability to succeed. They just need the right resources and someone to believe in them. Christopher has a bright future ahead of him and we are incredibly grateful we were able to help him on his journey to success. Congratulations Jill!

for adolescents and families, first as a therapist, and later as the Clinical Services Director. In 2017, Jill was again promoted into the position of Vice President of Clinical Services. In her role as VP Jill Stapleton leads all aspects of our community and campus based therapeutic services at two locations. This includes two mental health clinics and the professionals serving at least three child welfare organizations plus the In October, VP of Clinical Services Jill general public. Americus in Style!

Trustee and Development Chair, Mrs. Toni Gregory blessed our girls in Americus with dinner and a shopping trip. To show off their gifts, in a very fun way, they had a fashion show for Toni and the Americus staff. Because our girls are supported and cared for, they felt strong enough to step out of their comfort zone. They picked out clothes that many girls said they would not normally wear. The best part was when each girl went around and voiced what they liked about each other’s style. It was beautiful to witness our girls share uplifting and kind words of affirmation. Our girls became so overwhelmed Our Americus girls with emotion as they bonded over mutually shared doubts. But, they and Trustee and were reassured, they are not alone. A Brotherly Bond

JaMichael and his twin brother, Michael arrived at The Methodist Home in Macon about a year and a half ago. JaMichael, an enthusiast for sports and video games, finds joy in playing basketball and running track. While Math is his favorite subject in school, his brother loves learning about History. Michael is captivated by the art of music and enjoys writing and making his own. One of Michael’s favorite things about The Home is the pool. He loves swimming during the summer. Both brothers cherish the friendships they have built and the staff who supports them. Like most siblings, JaMichael and Michael have their disagreements. But, they both recognize the depth of their bond as brothers. “We may fuss, argue, or even fight

sometimes,” Michael shared. “But we are still going to be there for each other.” Their acknowledgment of the strength within their relationship adds a heartfelt layer to their journey at The Methodist Home, where the brothers navigate the ups and downs – grateful to have each other by their side.

Miracles, Faith, & Adoption Chris and Rachael Haines had been fostering to adopt for about six years when their prayers were finally answered. During 2020, the Haines were looking to partner with a new foster agency. While their journey was filled with heartbreak, Chris and Rachael are now able to reflect on their past and see where God was at work. Today, they are so thankful to have found Hope Foster Care & Adoption. After fostering seven kids the Haines were ready to be done. “It tore our hearts apart, every time a child left our home. It took us out of wanting to do fostering because it does take so much out of your heart every single time. We thought about it over and over and came to the decision that we were through,” Rachael shared. “Chris reached out to Hope explaining why we were not going to recertify. The next morning, they sent 14

us a message about Jason. He needed a permanent home.” The Haines were hesitant; could they go through another loss? But, they decided to have faith and hope. “We have not always been the biggest on faith, up until recently,” Chris shared. “Because Hope Foster Care & Adoption has a foundation based on Christian beliefs it started opening our eyes a little bit more. Not to say we never believed, but they gave us more reason to believe.” The Haines were on their way to a restaurant one afternoon when they received one of the best phone calls ever. They had been chosen as Jason’s adoptive family. While this will be Chris and Rachael’s first adoption, they are not new to the experience. Chris, himself was adopted at the age of two and when his daughter, Kinsley was 17, she wrote

Rachael a letter asking if she would adopt her. “She was always mine, ever since she was three years old,” Rachael said. “Kinsley wanted the paperwork to go along with it and that was fine because regardless of the paperwork, she was my daughter.” Chris shared how personal this journey was for him and Rachael. “After years of trying we wanted the opportunity to raise our own child, together.” The Haines cannot wait for Jason to officially be a part of their family because in their hearts he already is in every way. “He is absolutely adorable!” Rachael boasted, “his foster parents did an amazing job with him. Jason had some serious medical issues at birth. To know how far behind he was and to see where he is now, speaks volumes of how much this family loved him and still loves him to this day.” Today, as this two-year-old

bundle of energy runs around and climbs up on things, Chris and Rachael know it is a miracle from God. This entire journey has not just been one of adoption but of renewed faith. “I am not superstitious, but every time there was a birthday candle to blow, a shooting star in the sky, a lucky penny found, or anytime I had the opportunity to make a wish, I always wish we had a little one,” Rachael shared. “God always answers prayers on His own time and schedule. We might want something right away, might be praying about something for a few months but God will answer when He is ready. When we felt we were done, He said, I know you are not done yet. It is an absolute miracle how it happened.”

Light of the World Dear Donor, If you have ever participated in a traditional candle lighting service during the Christmas season, then you know it is a beautiful and symbolic sight to behold. At first, you are shrouded in the absence of light and then, a small flame is ignited. The first candle lit symbolizes the birth of Jesus, who called Himself, “the Light of the World.” According to John 1:5, “a light no darkness can extinguish.” It starts with just one person sharing the light of their candle. One by one, you witness each person touching flame to candle wick until the entire room is lit up. This is a reminder, as Jesus said, we too, are the light of the world as we share His light with others. Each one of our sites holds Christmas traditions. For many of our kids, it is usually their first time experiencing a candle lighting service, hearing the story of the birth of Jesus, or even opening presents from under a Christmas tree. We are so grateful to share these joys with our youth. However, we also recognize this time of year can often be weary on their hearts, BUT it can also bring forth hope for our children. Despite the despair in our world and in the lives of the children we serve, we are reminded the Light of Christ shines for all who call upon Him. And the best news is His Light cannot be extinguished by any darkness or evil we all may face. In John 12:46, Jesus said, “I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.” YOU can be a bright light in our children’s’ lives! Will you make a special gift to bring hope to our boys and girls this Christmas? Through God’s grace and your giving, we can remind our youth they are worthy of love. Jan Joiner Tripp, originally from Statesboro, was a member of First United Methodist Church. During high school, her family moved to Atlanta and attended Glenn Memorial UMC. She became involved in tutoring children in inner city Atlanta which sparked her passion. Jan went on to major in elementary education at Emory and taught for years in Decatur City Schools. She worked in one of the earliest Head Start programs in Georgia and received her certification in Early Childhood Education. Since then, she has taught kindergarten, second grade and especially enjoyed working with children with challenging behaviors. Marcus Tripp was born in Savannah and grew up at Epworth United Methodist Church. When Rev. Oscar Bell would visit on behalf of The Methodist Home, young Marcus learned with certainty caring for the children at The Home was something Methodist people did. After graduating from Savannah High School, he attended Emory University, majoring in religion. He continued at Emory’s Candler School of Theology, earning both a Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Ministry. 18

While at Emory, Jan and Marcus met through a mutual affinity for music. Jan sang in the Women’s Chorale and Marcus, the Men’s Glee Club. They wed in 1971 and in August celebrated 52 years of marriage! They have two beautiful, highly educated and professional daughters, Emily and Molly. Jan and Marcus are proud of their two sons-in-law and blessed with three granddaughters. As a minister, Marcus has served at seven United Methodist churches. He served as Superintendent of the Waycross and Dublin Districts and in retirement served one year at Mulberry Street UMC. He chaired the Board of Ordained Ministry, the Board of Trustees, and the Commission on Higher Education and Campus Ministry. Serving as an Associate at Mulberry Street UMC, the Tripps solidified their commitment to caring for others in need. In Leesburg, they followed Rev. Emory Gilbert, who tilled the soil of inspiration leading to the people’s active engagement with The Methodist Home. Christ UMC in Warner Robins was a church that strongly supported the building of Miss Margaret’s Cottage on The

Methodist Home’s Macon campus. Tenure at Perry UMC was especially generous in the rebuilding of the Americus Cottage after the 1994 flood. Serving at Vineville UMC, known as the “mother church of The Methodist Home,” there was a natural alignment as Vineville has always engaged with The Home through financial giving and volunteer service. Marcus was Waycross District Superintendent at the time of the Bailey bequest and worked with Dr. Derek McAleer in the creation of the St. Marys Foundation and the establishment of The Methodist Home cottage in St. Marys. As District Superintendent, Marcus was on the Board of The Home and became an original member of the Board of The Foundation of The Methodist Home. Jan has been involved in the communities and churches wherever they have served. She volunteered on the Arts Council, PTO president, various clubs, and was actively involved in Conference level committees including Pastoral Counseling, the Bishop’s Leadership Forum and District UMW gatherings. Jan taught Sunday School classes of all ages, and provided leadership

and organization to a tutorial program at L. H. Williams Elementary School in Macon. With her passion and compassion for children, Jan has been a member of the Board of Trustees for The Methodist Home twice. From 1997-2007, she chaired the Children’s Services Committee and now beginning in 2015 through 2025, participated in the design and planning of the Rumford Center. Jan has been an enthusiastic supporter of the creation of, and later the building of, the Eagle’s Nest Early Childhood Education Center, the addition of the Embrace program for teen moms and their babies, along with attention to many other services. Her two years as Chair of the Board of The Methodist Home have given her the opportunity to give full expression to her love for The Home and her enthusiasm for our ministry. Together, this couple has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to Christ through service to others. They have offered their lives in service and ministry, given so generously, and walked alongside us. A Dedication to Wesley & Eva Ward “A child is a gift from God. Anything you can do to help better the life of a child is worth it all,” as my dad would always say. Wesley and Eva Ward were two of the most dedicated volunteers and advocates of the Methodist Children’s Home beginning in the late 80’s soon after their retirement. They have always had a deep love for children. They tried for about 16 years to have one of their own, and their prayers were answered in 1959 when they were able to adopt one. Because their love was so obvious and abundant, and they had so much more love to give, there was no better way but to spend three or four days a week at the Children’s Home interacting with and serving the children. They ran/worked Tags of Hope Thrift Shoppe those 3-4 days a week until after dad had his stroke in 2010. They would have the sales every Tuesday and Friday, plus one Saturday a month raising an average of $2,500-$3,500 per month which went directly to benefit the 80-100 residents

of the home. In addition to, they also worked the Spring Celebration Day which was also a fund raiser for the residents. Both my parents received the Volunteer of the Year Award twice, and each also received the Friend of the Children Award that came from the South Georgia Conference. Had my dad not succumbed to being bedridden and eventually gone on to his heavenly home, he and my mom would have spent many more years loving on those precious gifts from God. While on his bed in hospice my dad told mom that when he got well and got out, they were going back. Even today, following my mom’s stroke in August 2022, she sometimes reminisces and shares about their time spent at the Children’s Home. - Vicki Clark Daughter of Wesley & Eva Ward Here at The Methodist Home, we are so grateful for all our volunteers, past and present! Saving money on your taxes while helping children and families is definitely a WIN-WIN Did you know that you could save money on your taxes while helping the children and families that are served by The Methodist Home? Donations of appreciated securities, such as stocks, bonds, and mutual funds can not only help those in the care of The Methodist Home, but can also be a smart tax-planning move. With charitable gifts of long term held appreciated securities, the donation you make and the deduction you get may be greater than if you were to sell the securities and then donate the cash proceeds from that sale. By donating securities to a charity, you are generally able to take a tax deduction for the full fair market value of the securities up to the amount allowed by the IRS. In addition, donating securities directly to a charity allows you to avoid paying capital gains taxes. If you were to sell shares of your securities and then donate the proceeds to a charity, you would have to pay capital gains on the difference between the price you paid for the shares and the price at which you sold them. However, when donating securities directly to a charity, the IRS allows you to bypass paying capital gains taxes. Not only is donating securities to charity a good idea for the present, it can also potentially reduce your future capital gains. Many investors have stocks that they love and want to hold for the long term within their portfolios. If these appreciated shares are donated and new shares of the same securities are purchased in their place, this can reset the cost basis at a higher price and

reduce future capital gains exposure if the stock continues to grow in value. Donating securities is relatively easy and can usually be initiated with a call to your financial advisor. Today, the work of The Methodist Home and The Foundation of The Methodist Home is more important than ever.
