The Copper Mark will be awarded for responsible copper production

The International Copper Association (ICA) and its members have introduced the Copper Mark™ - a new assurance system for responsible copper production launched in April 2019. The Copper Mark provides a platform for the assurance of responsibly produced copper and is available for mines, smelters and refineries. The Copper Mark is a voluntary program. Any copper mine, smelter or refiner is welcome to apply for the Copper Mark.

In the future, other participants in the copper value chain, e.g., traders, manufacturers and end users, will be invited to participate. Civil society, investors, academia and other interested parties can participate in the Copper Mark through an expert panel that advises on the development and administration of the Copper Mark.

The Copper Mark takes the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as its inspiration. SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, forms the core of the Copper Mark. In order to be recognised as supporting SDG 12 and to receive the Copper Mark, companies will be assessed against a set of responsible production criteria meeting prevailing industry norms defined by the Risk Readiness

The 70% Antofagasta plc owned Minera Antucoya in northern Chile will operate with 100% renewable energy starting in 2022 following its agreement with ENGIE. Construction of the project was completed in 2015 with full production achieved in 2016. Antucoya mines and leaches oxide ore to produce copper cathodes using the solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) process. www.antofagasta.co.uk

Towards LME responsible sourcing rules On 23 April 2019, the London Metal Exchange (LME) launched a formal market-wide consultation on proposed rules for the application of responsible sourcing principles to all LME-listed brands. These rules build on the strong engagement with market stakeholders to the LME’s October 2018 position paper, and reflect the broad range of feedback.

Matthew Chamberlain, LME CEO, commented, “Our comprehensive market engagement exercise has revealed strong support for the LME taking action on this important topic. The LME’s role is now to appropriately balance the differing views of market stakeholders when implementing our requirements, and we are pleased to have been able to do so in these proposals. For example, based on the constructive feedback of civil society organisations, we have enhanced our transparency requirements, and at the same time, we have respected the views of

producers who have called for more achievable timelines and a clearlydefined reporting process.”

The LME’s proposed rules will require all of its listed brands to undertake a Red Flag Assessment, based on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Guidance, by the end of 2020.

If this assessment demonstrates potential responsible sourcing red flags, then that brand will be classified as a Higher-Focus Brand and will also need to be audited as compliant with an OECD-aligned standard by the end of 2022. The LME will not accept a situation where consumers are required to take delivery of metal that is not responsibly sourced. It believes it is ideally placed to promote a centralised process, designed for the specific needs of the market. www.lme.com

Are you systems thinking?

Dr Mark Cooksey, Senior Principal Research Leader, CSIRO Mineral Processing team posted observations on 17 April arising from his attendance at TMS 2019. He reflects that there are three key challenges facing mineral processing operations in 2019: 1. Sustainability remains elusive Sustainability discussions highlighted that despite the desire to increase recycling rates, there remains a strong trend to continue designing products that are actually difficult to recycle. The reasons behind this are predominantly economical. Mixed material products are harder to recycle due to the combination of many materials. However, they continue to be a desirable option because they deliver higher performance at a lower cost.

2. Digitisation - always out of reach?

The complexities within mineral processing operations have created

issues for those who are investing in data capture and analysis through digitisation. For example, the aggressive environments can make data capture difficult and subject to large error. This can make it incredibly challenging to capture value from the data being analysed. Also, do not underestimate the challenge just in storing and managing your data.

3. Process development challenges Process development can be an expensive, time-consuming and highrisk endeavour, especially if undertaken without appropriate knowledge or expertise. An accelerated process development schedule involving multiple aspects in parallel can risk large expenditure at demonstration scale without sufficient understanding of phenomena at smaller scales.

Dr Cooksey also points out that CSIRO has extensive expertise and experience in addressing the above issues. CSIRO has a Chile International Centre of Excellence based in Santiago. www.csiro.au

Tongling Nonferrous Metals Group Co., Ltd., (TNMG) plans to produce selfproduced copper-in-concentrate of 54.4 kt, copper cathode of 1.39 Mt, sulphuric acid of 4.374 Mt, gold of 12,328 kt, silver of 467.3 t in 2019, and copper semis of 391.8 kt. In 2018, TNMG produced 1,328,600 t of copper cathode, or 14.6% of the total domestic output. www.antaike.com

Rio Tinto signed a Power Source Framework Agreement (PSFA) between Oyu Tolgoi and the Government of Mongolia in December. The 300 MW domestic plant will be majority owned by Oyu Tolgoi LLC. Construction is scheduled to start in 2020 following extensive studies, with the commissioning of the plant by mid-2023. www.riotinto.com

Zijin Mining Group Co., Ltd. (Zijin Mining) produced a total of 683,078 tonnes of copper, up 7.4% compared with the same period last year, among which, 248,577 t of mine-produced copper were produced, representing an increase of 19.52% compared with the same period last year. Also 434,501 t of copper were produced from refineries, a rise of 1.51% y-o-y.

Plant contract for Baikal Mining Company signed Outotec of Finland has signed a contract with Baikal Mining Company for the design and delivery of a greenfield copper concentrator and hydrometallurgical plant for the Udokan project located in the Kalarsky District in the Russian Far East. The contract price is approximately EUR 250 million.

Roughly two thirds of the order will be booked for Outotec Minerals Processing and one third for its Metals, Energy & Water segment.

Delivery includes basic and detail engineering of the concentrator and copper hydrometallurgical plant, procurement, delivery of main process equipment as well as installation supervision, training and start-up services. The new metallurgical complex is expected to operate with the annual capacity of 12 million tonnes of ore and produce 130,000 t of copper as high-

grade sulphide concentrate and as cathodes. Outotec’s main deliveries are expected to take place in 2020.

Jiangxi Copper Corporation (JCC), the parent company of JCCL, is located in Guixi City, Jiangxi Province. JCC produced 1.46 Mt copper cathode in 2018, up by 6.51% year on year.

Also JCC produced 208.3 kt copperin-concentrate, down by 0.62% year on year. The company’s output of gold and silver reached 25.58 t and 394.53 t respectively in 2018. www.antaike.com

The World Bank has launched its new Climate-Smart Mining Facility, aimed at building partnerships to manage the role mining will play in supplying the minerals needed for clean energy technologies, such as copper used in energy storage and electric vehicles, to help address climate change. The initiative brings together governments, private sector companies, academic and research institutions to promote sustainable mining practices in resource rich developing countries, with initial support from Rio Tinto, Anglo American and the German government. Building on the World Bank’s initial US$ 2 million investment, Anglo American joins partners as a donor, providing US$ 1 million to the Facility over the next five years.

low-carbon technologies are shared.

The Combilift Combi-PPT model won the Safety Category of the FLTA Awards for Excellence 2019 on 30 March. IWCC elects Mayr as new Chair The International Wrought Copper Council (IWCC) has announced that Dr. Erwin Mayr, CEO of the Wieland Group, was elected Chair of the International Wrought Copper Council by the IWCC General Assembly at its recent meeting in Santiago, Chile. Erwin Mayr, pictured, succeeds Stefan Boel, formerly of Aurubis AG, who was the IWCC’s longest serving Chair in its 66-year history. Erwin Mayr worked for Alcan and subsequently Novelis for 14 years mostly in Europe as well as in the United States. At the start of 2017, Erwin joined the Wieland Group as CEO. Wieland is a global leader in copper and copper alloy

semi- finished products and operates in more than 60 countries.

Erwin Mayr was elected to the IWCC Executive Board in 2017 and was appointed an IWCC Vice Chair in 2018. He said, “I am honoured to be appointed Chair of the IWCC. This sector is key to understanding the copper value chain. The semisfabricators act as a bridge between copper refiners and end-user markets. I look forward to further strengthening the links between the IWCC and its partners in the copper industry. Zijin Mining’s acquisition of RTB BOR and Canada’s NEVSUN has significantly increased its actual capacity and resource reserves. By the end of 2018, Zijin Mining had reserves of gold, copper, lead and zinc, of 1,727.97 t, 49.52 Mt and 9.5853 Mt respectively, of which the reserves of overseas copper were 78.3% of the group’s total. www.antaike.com

Copper market in surplus to March 2019 The copper market recorded a surplus of 241 kt in January to March 2019, which follows a deficit of 43 kt in the whole of 2018. Reported stocks rose each month in the first quarter and closed at the end of March 115 kt higher than at the end of December 2018. These increases included net deliveries of 36 kt into the LME warehouses and net deliveries of 143 kt into Shanghai warehouses.

G loba l con sumption for January to March 2019 was

5.29 Mt compared with 5.72 Mt for the same months of 2018.

Chinese apparent demand for the period January to March 2019 was 2,653 kt which was 6 per cent lower than the first three months of 2018. EU28 production fell by 3.1 per cent and demand was 765 kt , 9.6 per cent below the January to March 2018 total.

Properzi 2018 economic results optimism The Balance Sheet for 2018 was approved during the last meeting of Continuus-Properzi’s Board of Directors on 28 May 2019.

The results are in line with the lower sales figures of the previous two years. These results are not overly surprising as Properzi is a technology driven machinery

manufacturer with delivery times around 12 months.

The Board expressed its satisfaction with the success of the new Commercial Direction and Sales Organisation that has tripled the backlog of Purchase Orders and also broadened the niche markets in the non-ferrous fields where

The Aurubis Group generated operating earnings before taxes (EBT) of EUR 103 million in the first six months of FY 2018/19 (previous year: EUR 186 M). Metallo acquisition announced by Aurubis Aurubis AG has signed a share purcha se agreement for the acquisition of the Belgian-Spanish M e t a ll o G ro u p to co n ti n u e actively pursuing its recycling strateg y. Metallo Holdings is owned by funds managed by TowerBrook Capital Partners, a leading transatlantic investment firm. Metallo is a recycling and refining company that specialises in recovering non-ferrous metals from recycling materials with lower metal contents. The company has around 530 employees at locations in Belgium and Spain. In fiscal year 2018, Metallo generated revenues of approximately EUR 1 billion.

The share purchase agreement stipulates a purchase price of EUR 380 million, which will be financed without a capital increase.

The acquisition of Metallo, with its attractive growth potential, strengthens Aurubis’ metal portfolio, especially in the key metals copper, nickel, tin, zinc, and lead. The Metallo Group complements the investment project Future Complex

Market data for the start of 2019 The International Copper Study Group (ICSG) released preliminary data for February 2019 world copper supply and demand in its May 2019 Copper Bulletin. World mine production declined by about 1.8% in the first two months of 2019, with concentrate production declining by 1.3% and solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) by 4 per cent.

Although a few countries experienced growth, this was largely offset by declines in Chile and Indonesia. Production in Chile declined by 6% mainly due to lower copper head grades. Indonesian concentrate production declined by 50% primarily as a consequence of the transition of the country’s major two mines to different ore zones leading to temporarily reduced output levels. After aggregated growth of 13% in 2018, production in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia increased by 1.3% in the first two months of 2019 as reduced production at

some mines partially off-set rampup output at other operations.

Production in Peru, Australia, China and Mongolia increased due to improved grades and recovery from constrained output in 2018.

O n a re gi o n a l b a s i s , m i n e production is estimated to have increased by around 2% in Africa, 1% in North America and 5% in Oceania but declined by 3% in Asia, 4% in Latin America and 3% in Europe. Preliminary data indicates that world refined production remained essentially unchanged in the first two months of 2019, with primary production (electrolytic and electrowinning) declining by around 0.6% and secondary production (from scrap) increasing by 0.3 per cent.

The main contributor to the growth in world refined production was China due to the continued expansion of Chinese capacity.

Other countries recovering from production constraints in 2018 such as Australia, Brazil and Poland also

contributed to growth. However, over all grow th wa s par tially offset by a 15% decline in Chilean output, which was mainly due to temporary smelter shutdowns whilst undergoing upgrades to comply with new environmental regulations.

Production in India continued to be negatively impacted by the shutdown of Vedanta’s Tuticorin smelter and declined by 45 per cent.

Aggregated refined production in the DRC and Zambia declined by 7%.

On a regional basis, refined output is estimated to have increased Asia (2%) and in Oceania (25%) while declining in Africa (-8%), in the Americas (-8%) and remaining essentially unchanged in Europe.

Short-term copper forecasts from IWCC The International Wrought Copper Council (IWCC) released a sixmonthly review of the copper market in April, which had finalised forecasts for copper supply and demand. Using publicly available information and

input from ICSG, the supply side forecasts suggested that in 2018 copper mine production was 20.47 million tonnes. In 2019 mine output is expected to decrease to 20.05 Mt. For 2020, an increase in copper

mine production of 2.2% is forecast.

Wieland and Global Brass and Copper merger Global Brass and Copper Holdings, Inc. (GBC) and Wieland-Werke AG (Wieland Group) announced on 10 April that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement.

The merger agreement has been unanimously approved by the Board of Directors of Global Brass and Copper and the Supervisory Board of Wieland. Wieland Group will acquire all of the outstanding shares of GBC in an all-cash transaction.

GBC shareholders receive US$ 44.00 per share in cash, representing a 27% premium to Global Brass and Copper’s closing price as of 9 April 2019.The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2019 and is subject to certain required regulatory approvals.

New technological KGHM emerging KGHM’s planned average annual metallurgical production in the period 2019-2023 is 540 kt (Analyst Day presentation, 14 February 2019). This objective is supported by a number of ongoing plant investments RCR furnace

Work has accelerated on the Copper Scrap Plant program being advanced at the Legnica Copper Smelter and Refinery. This division is undergoing a broad investment program comprising among others the construction of a new RCR (Revolving Casting-Refining) copper scrap processing furnace. The RCR is a tanktype, revolving furnace with a casting element (air, oxygen, gas) and a refining element, with a dedusting and ventilation sequence as well as loading and casting (carousel).

The RCRs casting and fire refining capacity is up to 100 ktpy based on copper-bearing charge material containing a min. 89% Cu (scrap classes I-III, tank hall waste, anode forms, anode scrap and waste, etc). The average copper content in the waste is 95%. The product of the furnaces casting and refining is anode copper.

The maximum annual anode copper production is 90 kt. Functionality tests were carried out on individual elements of the RCR furnace up to May 2019, followed by the start-up of the RCR furnace in the second quarter of 2019.

Concentrate roaster

Commissioning of a copper concentrate roasting installation is taking place at HM Glogow I in 2019. The roasting installation is aimed at eliminating organic carbon and sulphur from concentrates in order to reduce the calorific value of the material charged to the flash furnace of Glogow I and thereby increase the efficiency of the concentrates processing cycle. The operation of the roaster is based on fluidised bed technology. The resulting material following roasting is then comprised of oxides and sulphides.

The roaster utilises fluidised bed technology, which means that heated material, in appropriately small fractions, creates a layer (thickness of approx. 1.5 m) under which air is blown. This creates a fluid with suspended solids, in which the speed at which the minerals contained in the concentrate are drawn upward matches their gravitational

drop, i.e. the material acts like a liquid. Thanks to the size (surface area) of the concentrate portion thus achieved (comprised of sulphides, hydrocarbons and elements of barren rock) it is possible to achieve maximum oxidation, which generates energy for heating the next portion of concentrate.

During the roasting process gases containing high levels of high-temperature CO2 and SO2 are recovered, which after cooling in the boiler and dedusting in cyclones and electrofilters are sent to the sulphuric acid plant. Heat from the gases is recovered from the fluidised bed of the roaster and from its cooling units using piping and a recovery boiler, then the steam created from this process (around 30 t/h) is put through a generator to produce electricity (around 7.4 MW).

Activities scheduled

According to KGHM first quarter results posted on 15 May, electrolytic copper production in

Q1 2019 was 142 kt (Q1 2018: 111 kt), assisted by the concentrate roaster. The inventories of copper anodes are being built up for the planned 2 month maintenance shutdown at the Legnica Copper Smelter and Refinery in 2019 as well as a 2 week maintenance shutdown at Glogow I. A program is being advanced to adapt the technological installations of KGHM to the requirements of BAT conclusions for the nonferrous metals industry and to restrict emissions of arsenic (BATAs), with significant plans relating to off-gas treatments. In parallel, construction of a new anode slimes cleaning installation at HM Glogow is scheduled for 2019-2021. Construction of an installation to produce scorodite (for neutralisation of arsenic) is at the R&D stage for implementation after 2022. The sulphuric acid plant at would also equire modernisation shortly after 2022, as would the tank hall. www.kghm.pl

New ISCG sulphide ore treatment report The ICSG released a 132-page report in April entitled ‘Smelting and Hydrometallurgy Treatment for Copper Sulphide Ores and Concentrates’. The report summarises the main findings of an ICSG funded research project looking to study five critical subjects related to the plants processing copper sulphides ores and concentrates of different complexity.

The report starts with a characterisation of copper concentrates available now, followed by the description of copper smelting processes for the treatment of these concentrates. The analysis of the circuits of iron and sulphur contents

in relation to CAPEX and OPEX in copper smelters is followed by the analysis of the role of minor elements present in the concentrate.

A careful review of the actual situation of the global copper smelting industry and its technologies and a review of the actual situation of proposed smelting technologies is included.

The environmental performance of smelter technologies and the expectation for a ‘zero waste process’ smelter is discussed in detail, in particular for minor elements, sulphuric acid and slags. for the treatment of copper concentrates is followed by a critical analysis of different variables for the selection of a route for the treatment of copper concentrates, and so on.

The findings of this new ICSG research project are useful for governments and industry involved in the decisions that will shape the copper industry supply side in 2020-2030.

Milestone for commodity analysis house Having started out in 1969 as a copper research specialist, CRU, now a global leader in commodity research and business intelligence, reached its 50th anniversary in March 2019.

So this year, for a change, Copper Worldwide asked Vanessa Davidson and her Team at CRU to give a snapshot of the copper market after their successful 18th CRU World Copper Conference in April: Q1. Globally, by main region and key countries, how are the preliminary first quarter 2019 results faring against CRU’s and general analysts’ predictions for growth / changes in mine supply, smelting, refined copper, and so on?

On the basis of first quarter results, CRU’s projections for refined copper consumption in 2019 have been revised down in Europe, Turkey, and parts of South East Asia, where demand has proved weaker than expected.

However, much of the downward revision in these regions has been offset by increased demand in China. Overall, we are still forecasting world growth in refined copper consumption of 2.4% this year, down slightly from an increase of 3.0% in 2018.

While consumption has changed very little on a global basis, the same cannot be said for refined copper production. We have reduced our projections for world refined copper output for 2019 by 280,000 t since the beginning of the year. Our current forecast implies global growth of 1.7% to a level of 24.1 Mt. Some of the more significant downward revisions have taken place in China, India, Chile, Brazil, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

As a result of the reduction in global refined copper production, our market balance has tightened. CRU is currently forecasting a refined copper market deficit of almost 100,000 t for 2019, compared with a surplus of 175,000 t at the beginning of the year. Our LME 3M price forecast has therefore been revised upwards for 2019 to around US$ 6,400 /t.

Q2. What have been the main causes of any deviations in the above results in the first three months of the calendar year?

CRU’s global economic forecast incorporates a sharper slowdown in industrial activity compared with three months ago, and this has been the main reason for the downgrades to copper consumption outside China.

The rise in protectionism has negatively

affected world trade and by association the manufacturing sector, especially in countries / regions such as Germany and South East Asia, which are heavily reliant on 2 Erik Heimlich is Principal Analyst, goods imports and/ Copper at CRU Santiago or exports.

The economic and political backdrop in Turkey has worsened over the last three months, exemplified by renewed turbulence for the lira. As a result, industrial production and construction forecasts for 2019 have also been revised down with adverse implications for Turkish demand for refined copper.

While China’s economy has been hurt by the imposition of US tariffs, the government has responded with a range of stimulus measures over the last year or so. In particular, the fiscal stimulus, announced in the aftermath of the National People’s Congress, has persuaded us to raise our 2019 primary metal forecast from 2.7% at the start of the year to 3.5% now, despite only pockets of post-Chinese New Year improvements in end-user demand.

CRU’s downward revision to world refined copper output for 2019 has been due in part to developments in China. There have been modest delays to the start-up of several refinery projects, including Xinhui Copper and Baiyin Phase II, while output from the Chifeng Jinfeng project is expected to be lower than forecast three months ago. In addition, the ramp-up of Chinalco’s Ningde smelter is progressing more slowly than originally expected.

Elsewhere, the reduction in global refined copper production reflects a series of disruptions to output. In India, the country’s supreme court ruled against the reopening of Sterlite’s Tuticorin smelter and refinery in February, despite an earlier order by the National Green Tribunal allowing the smelter to reopen. Many market participants are now speculating that a restart is unlikely to take place until Q4 2019 at the earliest.

In Chile, the upgrade works at Codelco’s Chuquicamata smelter are taking longer than expected. Codelco has terminated a US$ 260 M contract with Canada’s SNC-Lavalin, who were contracted to build its acid plants, and will likely proceed with the remaining work themselves. The company has reported that the smelter upgrade will be completed in late April, although many industry observers do not expect the smelter to restart until June.

In Zambia, legislative and fiscal changes have disrupted production at a number of operations.

on copper and cobalt concentrates on January 1st, Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) was forced to suspend operations at Chambishi RLE, while Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has scaled back operations at Nchanga. Miners in the DRC have also been affected by the Zambian rulings, including ERG, Zijin Mining, Jinchuan and Sicomines. Almost all the DRC’s copper concentrate production is exported to Zambia, since there is no smelting capacity in the country at present.

In addition, a further reduction in output in the DRC was made on the basis that Glencore has dramatically reduced its copper production guidance for the year at its Mutanda mine.

The company has reportedly encountered sulphide ore earlier than expected at Mutanda, which has prompted a reassessment of the mining plan.

Q3. What is CRU’s view on how the copper concentrate blending market will evolve with the imposition of legislative restrictions from China and likely future changes?

The sudden increase in the supply of complex concentrates experienced in 2015, particularly of high-arsenic concentrates from Chile and Peru, led to an increase in global blending capacity that allowed a continuation of exports into China, which limits imports of copper concentrates with arsenic content above 0.5%.

Blending capacity is now estimated to be in excess of requirements, following more recent declines in the volumes of complex concentrates reaching the market, and this situation is expected to continue in the short-tomedium term. Blending, however, remains an important and active component of the copper concentrates market, with blending facilities operating in different parts of the world to satisfy Chinese demand for concentrates and occasional spikes in the availability of complex concentrates from large producers.

Q4. What does CRU see as the short to medium term outlook for the above, given an increasing content of impurities in the concentrates supply chain?

The supply of highly complex concentrates reaching the custom concentrates market, particularly high-arsenic concentrates, is expected to remain below the peak levels of 2015-2017 but arsenic levels in complex concentrates will nevertheless start to increase again. Perhaps more of a concern is that arsenic levels in standard concentrates are slowly increasing, which is creating challenges for the global copper smelting industry, both environmental and technical, and also in terms of production costs.

A 4-way pedestrian reach stacker SANHA GmbH & Co. KG, founded in 1964, is one of the leading European manufacturers of piping systems for the gas, solar, heating, cooling and sanitary sectors.

The company’s range of around 8,300 products, made of copper, copper alloys, stainless and carbon steel, are used throughout Europe, Russia, Asia and Australia in domestic and industrial buildings as well as in applications including shipbuilding.

At the company HQ in Essen, Germany, a Combilift Combi-WR4 multidirectional pedestrian reach stacker is now in use in the warehouse to ensure more efficient and faster handling of packs of 6m long tubes and pipes. The previous combination of a reach truck and manual labour was c onsidered to be less than ideal and following a re-evaluation of internal transport and storage procedures the management decided to go with this more manoeuvrable pedestrian option.

The reach truck was able to offload deliveries, but once inside the warehouse, it got into difficulties as it could not easily move the long loads around the confined areas between racking. This resulted in operatives having to transfer the packs onto a trolley,

pull this into the aisles and then use the forklift again to lift the packs onto the racking.

Following a demo of the WR4 it was obvious that this would greatly improve and simplify this rather makeshift procedure. The WR4’s compact dimensions and its ability to access the whole of the storage area has relieved the workforce of any manual strain as well as bringing further operational advantages.

Fuel oil sulphur reduction applies from January Since 1 January 2015, the sulphur limit for fuel oil used by ships operating in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) designated by IMO (International Maritime Organisation) for the control of sulphur oxides (SOX) has been 0.10% m/m.

The ECAs established under MARPOL Annex VI for SOx are: the Baltic Sea area; the North Sea area; the North American area (covering designated coastal areas off the United States and Canada); and the United States Caribbean Sea area (waters around Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands). For ships operating outside designated Emission Control

Areas, IMO has set a limit for sulphur in fuel oil used on board ships of 0.50% m/m (mass by mass) from 1 January 2020. This will significantly reduce the amount of sulphur oxide emanating from ships and should have major health and environmental benefits for the world, particularly for populations living close to ports and coasts. The latest figures showed that the yearly average sulphur content of the residual fuel oils tested in 2017 was 2.54%. The worldwide average sulphur content for distillate fuel in 2017 was 0.08%. Control Areas, the limit for sulphur content of ships’ fuel oil is 3.50% m/m (mass by mass).

The interpretation of “fuel oil used on board” includes use in main and auxiliary engines and boilers. Exemptions are provided for situations involving the safety of the ship or saving life at sea, or if a ship or its equipment is damaged.

Another exemption allows for a ship to conduct trials for the development of ship emission reduction and control technologies and engine design programmes. This would require a special permit. www.imo.org

Even though enough blending capacity and availability of clean concentrates will allow the market to deal with the highly complex concentrates, the increase of arsenic in standard concentrates poses longer term challenges.

High arsenic content will also pose challenges to the development of several key mine projects in the medium- and long-term, increasing their operating or capital costs, depending on the route selected to deal with impurities.

With copper ore grades declining systematically, impurities become a more important issue for the market and not just arsenic. We increasingly hear that high levels of lead and zinc, fluorine, mercury and other impurities are becoming a more common issue for miners and smelters, and this trend is expected to continue in the future.

Q5. Much has been said about a mine supply shortage. How does CRU see the pipeline of upcoming projects, and which are the ones to watch?

Over the last year, there has been board approval for a number of high-profile brownfield expansions and greenfield projects that are due on-stream over the next five years.

These include Anglo American’s Quellaveco project and Teck Resources’ Quebrada Blanca Sulphides project. The result is that the copper market looks much better supplied in the medium-term than it did a year ago.

Although CRU still anticipates a sizeable supply gap to emerge by the mid-2020s, the project pipeline has strengthened significantly,

of 300,000 tpy, any serious delays to just one of these operations could have important implications for our supply/demand balance.

suggesting that caution will be required over the extent and timing of the next round of board approvals.

The projects to watch will be those using block caving techniques, including the Grasberg Block Cave, Chuquicamata UG, Oyu Tolgoi and El Teniente. Past block caving projects have encountered a range of challenges, which have typically led to delayed ramp-up times and higher costs. While the current crop of projects will certainly benefit from the lessons learned from past experiences, it is worth stressing that these projects are much larger in scale than their predecessors, typically involving much harder rock types and substantially deeper depths.

Q6. Many existing mines either have known potential in the ore body itself, or in tailings processing projects. What is CRU’s analysis of this potentially essential contribution to copper supply over the next three to five years?

There are few significant projects at an advanced stage that could start operating in the short- to medium-term. The most significant are located in Africa, especially ERG’s Metalkol RTR project in the DR Congo. In Chile, Minera Valle central has been processing El Teniente’s tailings for several years and is currently expanding its processing capacity.

The processing of tailings is a subject of increasing interest to mining companies.

As copper ore grades decline, the processing of tailings has become more competitive, but challenges remain due to the potential for intensive use of water, the disposal of tailings from the process and the need to operate at a sufficiently large scale. Countries such as Chile have huge resources in tailings and are therefore focusing on research that will allow the processing of tailings to become more economic.

Mine life extensions, on the other hand, are a common feature in copper mining where reserves and resources can increase with brownfield exploration.

12 | 18TH WCC REVIEW Q7. The new smelting technologies such as SKS bottom blown and other developments can make a difference to overall processing flexibility. Where are there new smelter facilities being considered and which technologies are most likely to be adopted?

We expect most of the new smelting and refining capacity to be built in China. In 2018, 600,000 tpy of new smelting capacity started up in China at three plants: Ningde, Xining and Lingbao. In April 2019, the 300,000 tpy Nanguo smelter became operational.

There is also a strong pipeline of smelting projects due to be commissioned in the remainder of 2019, including the 400,000 tpy Chifeng Jinfeng smelter and the 200,000 tpy furnace at Baiyin II. Although some of this capacity will replace existing plants, the total net addition to Chinese smelting capacity in 2018/19 is nevertheless close to 1.5 Mt. Most of the new Chinese smelters will use side-blow or bottom-blow smelting technology, as plants using this technology require less capex than flash smelters and provide more flexibility in the processing of different feed types.

Although most investment in smelting and refining capacity is still taking place in China, there are a handful of projects planned for the rest of the world, including Ivanhoe’s Kamoa project in the DRC; a new Gresik smelter in Indonesia (part of Freeport’s mining licence agreement); Grupo Mexico’s Empalme project; Enami’s Paipote II project in Chile; and Modern Mining Company and Trafigura’s joint venture polymetallic smelter in Saudi Arabia.

Q8. What is the medium term forecast for Chinese refined copper output, given the country’s changing internal market and pace of development? What impact will this have on the rest of us?

Chinese refined copper production is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 3.0% p.a. between 2018-23. Although the country’s rate of growth in demand is expected to slow, as China transitions from infrastructure led growth to a consumption-based model, refined copper production is expected to continue to grow strongly.

China is not self-sufficient in refined copper and continues to rely on imported material.

In recent years, net imports have remained above 3M tpy. We believe that self-sufficiency

continues to be a key objective in China and that smelter capacity additions and strong growth in refined copper production growth will consequently be maintained.

China’s move towards self-sufficiency will create excess smelting and refining capacity in the rest of the world, implying a need for rationalisation. Ultimately, those countries currently exporting refined copper to China, including Chile and Japan, will need to find alternative markets elsewhere or face reduced utilisation rates or capacity cuts.

Q9. What is CRU’s assessment of the finance landscape in 2019 so far for new copper producing and processing projects? Who holds the bargaining chips?

The environment for raising finance remains challenging. The major diversified mining companies are generally on a tight leash by shareholders when it comes to investment.

Companies looking to develop a new copper project will be competing for funds with the return of cash to shareholders via dividends or share buybacks, debt reduction programmes, M&A activity and growth opportunities in other commodities. Not surprisingly, the availability of finance for junior miners is even more restricted.

Q10. What has also to be taken into consideration apart from the above areas for a copper market appraisal to be effective, and generally how much impact does each factor have?

Chinese copper scrap imports are also an important topic, as there is considerable uncertainty regarding the impact of upcoming developments. Following the full ban on Category 7 scrap imports from 1st January 2019, the Chinese authorities have announced that Copper Worldwide Vol 9 No 2

Category 6 copper scrap will be moved from the non-restrictive import list onto the restrictive import list from 1st July 2019. As a result, a system of import quotas will come into play.

Our research indicates that we are likely to see at least some short-term disruption to scrap trade flows, since the government has yet to publish its guidance on how the quota system will work.

Another important issue is the timing of when Category 6 scrap will be renamed as a ‘raw material for import’ and be treated by China Customs as a non-waste product. We have contacted the Recycling Branch of China’s Nonferrous Metals Association and understand that a draft proposal will undergo a consultation process in the middle of the year and could be released by end-2019. If this is the case, then we have reason to believe that the volumes of imported copper contained in scrap, albeit under a different name, will stabilise thereafter. www.crugroup.com

BHP back on track for 2019 The BHP Operational Review to 31 March 2019 released on 17 April confirmed copper equivalent production was 1,245 kt in line with estimates. The return of Olympic Dam surface operations to full capacity following the acid plant outage in August 2018 was offset by the impact of expected lower copper grades at Escondida in the first quarter of 2019. Surface operations ramped up between October 2018 and February 2019 following completion of the acid plant remediation works at Olympic Dam. Pampa Norte copper production decreased by 11 per cent to 172 kt and reflects planned maintenance and a production outage at Spence following a fire at the electrowinning plant in September 2018, and the impact of heavy rainfall in northern Chile in February 2019 at both Spence and Cerro Colorado.

Antofagasta posts record output On 24 April, Antofagasta Plc reported copper production in Q1 2019 was 188,600 tonnes, in line with expectations and an increase of 22.6% compared with the same quarter in 2018, mainly due to higher throughput and the anticipated higher grades, particularly at Centinela. Scheduled maintenance at Los Pelambres and Centinela, combined with lower grades led to production being 14.3% lower than the record performance in the previous quarter. Underlying operating performance remained strong.

Antofagasta produced a record 725.3 kt of copper in 2018, according to its Annual Report released on 12 April. This included 100% of production at Los Pelambres (357.8 kt), Centinela (248 kt, of which 92.5 kt was SX-EW cathode output) and Antucoya (72.2 kt SX-EW cathode), and 50% of Zaldívar’s production (half of total 47.3 kt via heap-

leach). Encuentro Oxides project reached full capacity and Centinela’s molybdenum plant started operating. Los Pelambres US$1.3 billion expansion project (including the US$ 0.5 bn desalination plant) was approved to produce 60,000 tpy additional copper over 15 years from late 2021.

At the AGM on 22 May, CEO Ivan Arriagada said the corporation had 6,500 direct employees and 15,000 contractors. The was regrettably one fatal accident in 2018. In 2014 Antofagasta developed an innovative local engagement framework called Somos Choapa, which it continues to consolidate and evolve. The CEO highlighted that the El Mauro tailings dam (downstream method) at Los Pelambres has 76 instruments monitoring wall stability, and withstood a magnitude 8.3 earthquake with an epicentre 100 km away in 2015. www.antofagasta.co.uk

Investments promise for Southern Copper Southern Copper reported 2018 net income as US$ 1,543.0 million in February, and 2018 copper production increased 0.8% y-o-y as a result of higher production at the Peruvian mines of Toquepala (+15.0%) and Cuajone (+1.6%), partially offset by a decrease at the Mexican mines. Copper production in 4Q18 increased 4.0% to 234,991 t compared with 4Q17, principally due to higher production at the Toquepala mine (+20.8%), as a result of additional copper production of 8,630 t from the new concentrator.

The US$ 1.3 bn Toquepala Expansion Project (Tacna, Peru) concentrator began production in 4Q18, and full production is expected to be reached by 2Q19, giving a total 258,000 t output for Toquepala in 2019.

Tia Maria (Arequipa, Peru) has completed all engineering and environmental requirements, including responding to Ministry of Energy and Mines observations in 4Q18. The construction license for the 120,000 tpy SX-EW copper greenfield project (budget US$ 1.4 bn) is expected in the first half of 2019.Buenavista Zinc (Sonora, Mexico) includes the development of a new concentrator to produce approximately 80,000 t of zinc and 20,000 t of copper per year. The US$ 413 M project expects to initiate operations in 2021.

Pilares (also Sonora), near La Caridad, consists of an open-pit mine operation with an annual production capacity of 35,000 tonnes of copper in concentrates. The budget is US$ 159 million and production is scheduled for early 2020. www.southerncoppercorp.com

The US$ 2.46 bn Spence Growth Option (Chile) project, which has an initial production target date in FY21, is overall 47% complete.

First quarter update from FCX Freeport-McMoRan reported first quarter 2019 results on 25 April. Consolidated sales totalled 355.6 kt (784 M lb) copper in the period, reflecting impacts from weather events at El Abra, unscheduled maintenance in North America and timing of shipments in Indonesia.

Capital expenditures totalled US$ 622 million in the first quarter (including approximately US$ 370 M for major mining projects). Capital expenditures for 2019 are expected around US$ 2.5 bn, including US$1.5 bn for major mining projects primarily associated with underground development activities in the Grasberg minerals district in Indonesia and development of the Lone Star copper leach project in Arizona.

An initial project to develop the Lone Star leachable ores commenced in Q1 2018, with first production expected by the end of 2020.

Initial production from the Lone Star leachable ores is expected to average approximately 200 M lb of copper per year, with the potential for future expansion options. Total capital costs for the initial project, including mine equipment and pre-production stripping, are expected to approximate US$ 850 M and will benefit from the utilisation of existing infrastructure at the adjacent Safford operation. IWCC Technical Seminar held in booming China A total of 80 delegates from 11 countries met between 3-7 March in Shanghai and Tongling to attend the 2019 IWCC Technical Seminar on downstream processes in the fabricating industry.

The 2019 Seminar was the 35th Seminar, which followed the last two successful events on melting, refining and casting (Munich, 2017) and on hot and cold deformation (Chicago, 2018).

China today

Automation was an important issue discussed by many speakers. Wang Peizhong (LOI Thermoprocess) and Florian Oberreiter (Ebner Industrieofenbau) presented solutions on how to automate the handling of different furnace bells in a bell annealing shop. The first speaker presented an automatic operating crane, while the second introduced an automatic working bell elevating car moving on a rail system. Autonomous robot forklifts operating in warehouses were described by Jeremy Seah (Balyo Apac). Patrick Telders pointed out the advantages of analysis independent of an operator to inspect cracks and wear occurring in circular knives.

The Seminar Chair, Michael Hoppe (Aurubis), welcomed delegates to Shanghai and opened the two days of sessions devoted to presentations. His introductory speech highlighted that the IWCC Technical Seminar was taking place in China again after a 12-year absence, and that the plant visits in Tongling would be an opportunity to witness the advances made in the industry in China during those years. Commenting on the program of 25 papers to be presented, Michael Hoppe remarked that he was happy that several equipment manufacturers were due to present their solutions for solving the technical issues in the production process. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, each fabricator had to decide the best solution for its needs. The Chair also pointed out the importance of surface control and adaptation by convenient treatments as well as the improvement of strip flatness as key aspects to be discussed during the Seminar.

The Seminar started with an overview of the Chinese copper industry. Pan Hong (BGRIMM Lilan Consulting) described the state of the industry in China, expressed some concerns about a slight slowing down of activity, a delicate situation for the scrap business, some sectorial overcapacities, and touched upon Chinese-USA trade tensions. Notwithstanding,

Continuous annealing lines was another topic for the Seminar. Thomas Kramer (WSP) explained the features of his company’s furnaces for annealing strip, with thicknesses varying from ultra-thin to thick gauges.

Klaus Schmitz (Otto Junker) described both catenary and high convection vertical furnaces, showing clearly his preference for the latter. During rolling and annealing, the flatness of the strip and foil may degrade.

Stretch bend levelling helps to restore flatness, which wasthe topic of Lutz Henrich’s (Schnutz) talk.

High-quality surfaces are more and more important to meeting customers’ requests.

Thus, Noriyuki Tanaka (Dai-Dan) emphasised the influence of surface pre-treatment on the corrosion resistance of copper alloys used in heat exchangers. Achieving an excellent product surface starts at the upward stages of the process, e.g. during strip milling. This was the content of Hendrik Busch’s (MKM Mansfelder Kupfer and Messing) presentation on optimising the surface quality of Conti-M® strip. Further down the process, grinding and similar techniques allow improvement in surface quality. Norman Ruckert (Osborn) and Daisuke Kitamura (Ikuta Sanki Kogyo) presented the latest available equipment and brushes.

Strip plating

Tin plating copper strip is now a standard surface enhancing treatment to strengthen the functionality of electrical connectors, especially to lower insert forces. Nevertheless, it is still possible to improve both the equipment and the process. Following an overview paper about the different tin plating techniques available (hot dip tinning and tin electroplating with or without reflowing the tin layer) given by Ulrich Lorenz (Aurubis Stolberg), Jürgen Rosenfeld (Otto Junker) introduced the improvements made in hot dip tinning equipment by his company. Yuta Sonoda (Dowa Metaltech) and Kiyotaka Nakaya (Mitsubishi Materials) focused on tin electroplating and discussed how the ratio tin/inter-metallics/free tin affects insert forces.

Three presentations highlighted modern slitting equipment, especially of thin to ultra-thin foils. As it is good to gain insights from other metals, Detlef Neumann (Danieli Germany-Fröhling) spoke about the experience gained by his company with their slitting lines for aluminium. Thomas Timmer (Achenbach Buschhütten) discussed not only slitting equipment, but also coiling and recoiling systems. In slitting, strip braking is an important aspect. Lutz Henrich (Schnutz) compared the different available systems and the latest innovative features.

Surface inspection

Before starting to improve the quality of copper semis, it is important to have the right tools to look at the surface and into the bulk, as well as to correctly monitor what happens in the various equipment used. In his talk about the fabrication of precision foil, Carsten Mohr (Schlenk Metallfolien) presented an interesting technique using electrical resistivity to measure foil thickness. Eddy currents are useful to assess the quality of heat-treated strips by detecting, for example, small sub-surface defects and therefore complementing visual surface inspection techniques, as Rainer Sailer (Institut Dr. Foerster) pointed out. Elke Roller (Friedrich Vollmer Feinmessgeraetebau) discussed how to measure shape and to control the flatness of thin and ultra-thin strips. Stefan Theobald (Wieland-Werke) informed the delegates how an off-line system was developed in-house to measure all relevant characteristics of slit copper strip. Collecting data from process

equipment and products is an important first step, but they have to be correctly evaluated and used. This was the topic of Helga EversDonner’s (QuinLogic) concluding presentation, when she presented a data driven quality assurance solution for rolling mills.

Copper hill

The goal of the Seminar is not only to introduce innovations to the delegates through presentations, but also to allow them to visit copper semis fabricating plants. This year the plant visits took place in the city of Tongling (‘Tongling’ translates in to English as ‘copper hill’), some 400 km west of Shanghai. The city is a millennia old centre of copper production and manufacturing in China, and it is the aim of the Tongling government that their city Copper Worldwide Vol 9 No 2

continues to be not only in the centre of the Chinese copper business, but also strongly present worldwide. Important investments from government and industry as well as cooperation with foreign companies should be the motor for future development. This strategy was explained to the delegates during a Copper Forum, and discussions went on during a superb dinner hosted by the local government.

Delegates could see first-hand many of the latest developments in the Chinese copper semis industry during the plant visits to the flat rolled product plant of Tongling Jinvi Copper, the brass rod and wire mill of Tongling Nonferrous Metals Stock Tongguan Brass Bar, and the very recently built plant of Hailiang (Anhui) Copper Tube dedicated to the production of ACR tubes. The programme concluded with an impressive visit to the new factory of Anhui Tongguan Copper Foil, where ultra-thin copper foils are produced by electro-deposition.

In summary - as the Chairman pointed out - the 2019 Technical Seminar was again a very successful event, thanks to the commitments of the speakers, of the delegates during the Q&A sessions, of the officials of Tongling, of the colleagues in charge of the visits and, last but not least, to the organisational skills of the IWCC staff. At the end of the Seminar Michael Hoppe announced that the next IWCC Technical Seminar will take place at the beginning of March 2020 in Italy and will focus on product innovation. www.coppercouncil.org

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) is investigating the possibility of re-starting its idled Ravensthorpe nickel/cobalt operation in Australia.

FQM placed the plant under care and maintenance in October 2017. Since then, nickel prices have recovered and the company said that if market conditions continue, it expects that operations could resume in Q1 of 2020.

Plant startup is expected by the last quarter of 2020.

Rio Tinto has committed US$ 302 million of additional capital to advance its Resolution Copper project in the US state of Arizona. The investment will fund additional drilling, ore-body studies, infrastructure improvements and permitting activities as Rio Tinto looks to progress the project to the final stage of the project’s permitting phase.

The project is currently in its seventh year of a comprehensive environmental review and approval process, conducted by the US Forest Service under the National Environmental Policy Act. This process has involved numerous public meetings, hundreds of government to government consultations between the Forest Service and Native American tribes and the participation of individuals, environmental groups, nearby municipalities and local businesses. Upon this investment, project partners will have invested over US$ 2 billion to develop and permit Resolution since 2004.

This includes sinking a new shaft to mining depth, rehabilitating an existing shaft, extensive drilling and ore body testing, and the permitting and public engagement process.

Aurubis contracts with Quebrada Blanca Phase 2 As part of the development of copper mine project Quebrada Blanca Phase 2, Aurubis AG has entered into a long-term supply contract for copper concentrates with project operator Compañía Minera Teck Quebrada Blanca SA. According to the agreement, Aurubis will source a significant volume of copper concentrates from the mine over about ten years.

The Quebrada Blanca mine is located in the Tarapacá region of northern Chile. Phase 2 of the project is expected to initiate mining activities in 2021, according to current plans. At that point, the mine will be among the world’s 20 largest copper mines. The project operator is majority-owned by the Canadian company Teck Resources Limited (Teck), which is known in the industry for its sustainable approach to resource development. MINO of Italy has been awarded

by Ningbo Jintian Copper (Group) Co.,Ltd. a contract for a new Six High Finishing Cold Rolling Mill for Copper and Copper Alloys. This new contract follows the successful completion of the previous Six High Finishing Mill supplied and commissioned by MINO two years before. MINO has been selected for the supply of a new finishing mill to be installed in the new production facility for 650 mm wide strips: the mill shall be used for the rolling of the thinnest gauges on which the control of flatness and thickness tolerances is most critical. The mill will roll down to a minimum thickness of 50 microns on 650 mm wide strip and shall be sized to accept incoming material as thick as 2 mm.

The mill will be equipped with the same MINO AGC/AFC system which is already installed in the previous mill and which has reached excellent performance levels. The design of the mill is particularly focused on the rolling process of copper thin gauges: accurate tuning of work roll thermal crown, high precision of control of rolling force and strip tension, and high quality strip surface can be achieved only by combining accurate machining of the equipment together with dedicated mechanical design and automation

system that are the result of the experience and knowhow gained

by MINO in this specific field. Advancement of strategic projects for KGHM KGHM Group reports that in 2018 its production of payable copper amounted to 634 thousand tonnes, 3 percent lower than in 2017, but higher than the target for 2018. The 29 April Southern Copper results showed mined copper production at 228,629 tonnes increased 11.6% in 1Q19 when compared with 1Q18, due to higher production at all operations.

The 2019 Sustainable Industrial Processing Summit and Exhibition takes place from 23-27 October 2019 in Paphos, Cyprus. New CEEC Chair and innovation workshop

Mike Battersby is now Chair of the CEEC Board

The CEEC Mineral Processing and Innovation Workshop takes place on 19 June in Adelaide.

Comminution is a major cost and energy consumer, using up to 3% of global generated electric power. In Australia alone, copper and gold mines’ comminution processes account

for 1.3% of national electricity consumption, as well as being key constraints to site productivity, value and mining footprint.

Mike Battersby has been appointed Chair of the CEEC Board of Directors. UK-based Mr Battersby has been a CEEC Director since 2012.

He brings board expertise and more than 40 years’ experience in the minerals industry to the role. Mr Battersby’s current board positions include Chairman and Managing Director of the Maelgwyn Mineral Services (MMS) group of companies in the UK, South Africa and Australia, and Director of Greenhills Technology International Limited. He has operational experience with AngloGold, DeBeers and Billiton in Africa, Europe, South America and Australia plus more than 20 years working in the commercialisation of innovative technology. Mr Battersby is a Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (London), the Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy, and the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME (USA).

Mr Battersby acknowledged the great work of outgoing Chair Joe Pease and the contribution of the inaugural CEEC Chair, Elizabeth LewisGray, who facilitated the establishment of CEEC with the aim of accelerating industry uptake of eco-efficient comminution. CEEC has been able to build a global network of more than 15,000 leaders, practitioners and researchers to support industry uptake of best practices and cutting edge advances. Copper features at TMS 2019 The 148th TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition held in San Antonio, Texas in March had much to offer delegates.

Developments in copper including copper scrap, e-scrap and recycling were included in a large range of technical sessions and subjects.

Also included was an excellent series of papers on the topic of ‘freeze linings’ as a means of improving furnace refractory life.

Copper and recycling

While the production of copper from scrap generally requires less energy than that for the production of copper from ore, the actual energy requirements to process scrap copper to marketable copper depend on the grade of scrap. This is illustrated in Figure 1, which shows energy requirement for the treatment of copper scrap as fuel (MJ/t of Cu) on the lefthand axis, and electricity (kWh/t of Cu) on the right-hand axis, as a function of the grade of scrap as % Cu. The production of primary cathode copper from 0.5% Cu ore requires 6,800 kWh/t Cu for electricity and 27,300 MJ/t Cu for fuel (Ref. TMS 2019 paper by Mackey et al). At the New York Meeting of the AIME in February 1923, Dr. Eng Kenzo Ikeda presented a comprehensive and detailed paper on the well-

known Kosaka copper smelting in Japan. The author described how they achieved the long life of the converters (at 2.1 m diameter by 3.3 m long, with a blowing rate of c.5,300 Nm3/hr small by today’s standards), newly modified to basic practice following American practice.

A campaign life of nearly two years was reported. The long campaign life was largely achieved by depositing a magnetite coating analysing about 75% Fe3O4 on the refractory, an early example of the use ‘freeze lining’ for furnace vessels. This converter procedure was also practiced at other smelters in the USA and elsewhere. It is still used at some plants and smelting vessels today.

The TMS 2019 stream ‘Freeze Linings: Myth and Reality’ included a total of 12 very interesting papers covering many aspects of this important area of furnace technology. It was organised by: J. Vancouver the barometer of copper innovation Copper 2019 is the 10th edition of the global Professional copper metallurgy meeting, and the first in North America since 2007. COM 2019 is the Annual Conference of Metallurgists and is the premier event in Canada for the metallurgy and materials community.

COM + Copper 2019 takes place from 18-21 August 2019 in Vancouver Convention Center.

Surveys show that 75% of attendees are directly from the Metallurgy and Materials industry sector. Copper 2019 expects over 1,000 delegates from over 25 countries. Demographically participants are primarily company executives, senior metallurgists, professional engineers, researchers and members of academia. Organisational structure

Metsoc, the 58th annual Conference of Metallurgists (COM 2019) and CIM are honoured to host Copper 2019, marking a milestone in the Copper Conference series with the 10th Edition. The success and outcome of the Copper Conference is the work of the six leading International Professional Societies (IIMCh, GDMB, MMIJ, TMS, SME, MetSoc) who tirelessly persevere in bringing forth symposia of the highest quality to the delegates.

Kemetco and BC Research tour

This 22 August tour comprises as follows: Kemetco Research is a private sector integrated science, technology and innovation company.

The tour will provide an opportunity to see Kemetco’s newly constructed (2015) 20,000 sq ft R&D facility in Richmond, BC. Some of Kemetco’s commercialisation projects will be viewed, such as the robust ORP sensor (UBC Technology), a lithium ion battery recycling pilot plant, and a hydrometallurgical process pilot plant.

BC Research is part of the NORAM group of companies, which is vertically integrated to provide clients with a unique technology development and commercialisation ecosystem in chemical engineering, extractive metallurgy, and clean-tech processes and technologies.
