METAA Chief Technology Officer Certificate Online Course Having experienced a very challenging 2020 to present, do you have a new vision for your own professional learning? As an incumbent or aspiring technology director, plan a summer/fall ‘ED-VENTURE’ for yourself! ABOUT THE COURSE:

METAA is offering the METAA Chief Technology Officer Certificate Online Course through Framingham State University. This rigorous 14-week online course will build an understanding of the essential skills and knowledge in the three primary areas of: Leadership & Vision, Understanding the Educational Environment, and Managing Technology & Support Resources as outlined in the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) Framework of Essential Skills of the K–12 Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Coursework consists of readings, activities, online discussion posts, reflections, and a final project portfolio. This course addresses the needs of prospective technology directors as well as incumbent technology directors. Students can expect to work about 5 asynchronous hours per week depending on expertise in the covered skill areas: • Leadership and Vision • Strategic Planning • Ethics and Policies • Instructional Focus and Professional Development • Team Building and Staffing

• Information Technology Management • Communications Systems Management • Business Management • Data Management • Data Privacy and Security

The advantage of working within this online cohort is the sharing of learning and expertise in each of the skill areas. Technology directors do not have the same responsibilities in each district and the aim of CoSN and METAA, the national and local chapters representing technology directors, is to ensure that all technology directors are knowledgeable of the ten skill areas given above making possible the inclusion of the technology director on the central management team in each district. Another advantage is that students will earn 3 Framingham State credits. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive a CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION from METAA. This certificate will give employers assurance that they will be hiring or have hired a technology administrator who possesses the vast knowledge and skills necessary to be an effective educational technology leader in the K–12 environment. Course Cost: $1500 (non-refundable) Location: Online (Students will submit work online weekly – expect about 5 hours of work per week. Students will collaborate asynchronously.) Graduate Credits: 3 (through Framingham State University)

Course Registration Form UPCOMING COURSES: The next course will be announced in June. The course session dates planned are July 12 – October 17, 2021. The last course for 2021 will be announced in August. The course session dates planned are September 13 – 19, 2021. At least 5 students need to register per session in order to hold the course. uring these challenging times, technology has been the “connector” for the educational community and the world. Remote learning has relied heavily on video conferencing and an array of other technologies to stay connected with our students, colleagues, parents, and our community. We all agree this has not been ideal, nor is it the standard of practice we want to continue. However, with the significant growth and adoption of digital resources in schools, we must continue to capitalize on this opportunity for our students. This experience has catapulted us into a “new normal,” which we must embrace as an integral component to our students’ future. Teachers and administrators have experienced professional growth in digital skills during this past year. For many of our colleagues, it has cultivated a new instructional path for the classroom. METAA hopes that the METAA Virtual Buyer’s guide and the METAA Virtual CTO Clinic 2021 will give you additional access to resources to continue the digital learning progression. I want to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors who have contributed to this Buyers Guide and have made this event possible without any cost to attendees. We look forward to seeing you next year in person! For now, stay connected and get involved with METAA using the additional METAA resources listed on the left column. Stay safe and be well.

Network Attacks Are Coming:

Discover 5 Ways to Stay Safe The FBI has issued warnings about the increasing threat of ransomware attacks, so now is the time to ensure your organization has taken the proper security precautions. While no strategy can offer perfect security, proactively configuring your network, documenting and practicing breach scenarios, and implementing security controls will decrease your chances of suffering an attack. Below are five actions you can take that will collectively form a strong defense foundation.

1 2

Develop a Recovery Plan

Effective ransomware security requires a response plan in the event of a successful attack. Your plan should at a minimum answer the following questions: •

What is your communication plan? That is, who should be involved and how will they correspond while triaging an event? How will you communicate with employees and your community? Who will speak with law enforcement and the media?

•

Where have you stored your backup data? What steps must you take to restore it? Who will take those steps during an event?

•

What is your recovery sequence? What are the most important steps you must take to resume everyday operations?

•

What vendors do you employ? Who is your point of contact with each vendor?

Backup and Secure Your Data

Regularly back up your data. Keep your information in a secure location that only authorized users can access. •

A multi-layered backup strategy simplifies the rebuilding of your network after an attack.

•

Consider one or more cloud solutions, such as ENA TrustBackup, as key layers to protect your data. Keeping your data in the cloud will simplify the restoration process after an attack.

•

Consider immutable backup data to prevent encryption of backups in the event of an on-premise ransomware attack.

3 4 5

Control Your Network

Limit the reach of malware by controlling your network traffic with firewalls. Prevent DDoS attacks with blackhole routing. •

Implement administrative level access restrictions to limit access and therefore exposure to risk.

•

Consider increasing your “East/West” visibility within your network. If you do so, in the event of an infection you will be able to more quickly identify and contain the threat.

•

Solutions such as ENA NetShield and ENA NetShield UTM provide hosted and onpremise firewall services that can be deployed to protect the core or key network segments from attacks and unwanted traffic.

•

Select an Internet provider that protects you from DDoS attacks with blackhole routing.

Run Security Scans and Install Patches When They Become Available

Malware takes advantage of security loopholes and bugs within operating systems or software. •

Run software updates or patches as soon as they are available. These updates repair vulnerabilities attackers might otherwise exploit.

•

Scan your data before storing offsite. This can prevent the storage of infected data that could compromise backup efforts.

•

Consider performing a network penetration test at least once a year.

Train Your Employees. Then Train Them Again.

Most ransomware attacks are caused by an end user’s poor cybersecurity practices. •

Employee security awareness training helps your users recognize phishing attacks. Many tools for training, student data privacy compliance, and phishing simulations are available on the market. ENA TrustCompute also includes a GoPhish Stack.

•

Stress the importance of scrutinizing links and attachments to ensure they have come from a reliable source.

•

Business email compromise (BEC) is a leading source of security risk. Stress to all users the importance of double-checking requests for money, gift cards, unusual spending, and sensitive personal data. Instruct users to always call the sender when confirming requests that seem out of the ordinary.

To discuss how Massachusetts schools can effectively implement these strategies, please reach out to Nicole O’Brien at nobrien@ena.com, schedule a meeting, or consult these helpful resources: • Cyber Readiness Institute’s “Ransomware Playbook” • National Institute of Standards and Technology’s “Data Integrity: Recovering from Ransomware and Other Destructive Events”
