FOUNDED IN FAITH. ROOTED IN MILWAUKEE. Messmer begins its “fourth generation” by honoring those who have led along the way.

At our recent Portraits in Leadership gala, Marquasia Lampley, a senior at Messmer High School, spoke to the crowd about her life-changing experience at Messmer. Yes: she used the words “life-changing.”

Marquasia eloquently talked about the hardships she regularly faces, the challenges that she deals with daily, and how Messmer Catholic Schools has given her the tools and the strength to make the right decisions.

Marquasia is one story out of nearly 1,700 we could tell you right now. Every single one of our students is the recipient of a life-changing education at Messmer Catholic Schools. That is our mission in a nutshell.

We want to change lives. And we want to change Milwaukee.

This issue of Messmer Today is all about lifting up Messmer Catholic Schools as a foundational, pivotal, life-changing school in the landscape of Catholic education in Milwaukee. But more than that, it is about the individuals who have led us along the way for 90 years, and who compel us to march forward with pride and determination into our “fourth generation.”

It is no secret that we as a city and as a nation are facing some very difficult times. In the face of fear and violence, we at Messmer Catholic Schools are committed to love and leadership. As examples of that love and leadership, we lift up the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters, Keith Stanely, Bishop Don Hying, James Cardinal Harvey, our own Campus Minister Laura Hancock, our remarkable teachers, administrators and more.

The nearly 1,700 students on our three campuses are watching our example. Milwaukee is watching our example. Messmer Catholic Schools does not take that responsibility lightly. We know that we were built by Milwaukee, for Milwaukee.

LIVING THE YEAR OF MERCY Messmer Catholic Schools’ students respond to the Holy Father’s call with the Serve 2 Unite program Pope Francis declared 2016 a Year of Mercy. He has spent the year talking about how Catholics can put the idea of mercy into action, with a special call to young people to take risks and put themselves in the service of others. Laura Hancock, director of Messmer High School’s campus ministry, has been inspired by the Pope’s call as she strengthens existing programs and introduces new service opportunities to students.

“What I have felt in the call of Pope Francis to the Year of Mercy is to be reminded that our daily, lived, real actions of mercy are central to our growth as people of faith,” said Hancock.

One of the most significant new opportunities that Messmer’s campus ministry is offering to students is a program in partnership with Serve 2 Unite.

Founded after the Sikh Temple shooting in August 2012, Serve 2 Unite seeks “to make the practice of peace an attractive and valuable way of life to students, transforming school environments via fearless creativity and compassion, in interdependent partnership with local and global peace efforts.”

The organization works towards these goals by connecting students with global mentors and encouraging them to create service learning and art projects focused on themes of peace.

Between ten and thirty Messmer high school students participate in the Serve 2 Unite program on a weekly basis. In 2015-2016, students were engaged in a project about human and sex trafficking, learning from global and local mentors and creating works of art that were displayed at Mount Mary University and Arts@Large. They also participated in the Peace Summit held at UW-Milwaukee.

This year, student participants will be creating service learning projects exploring the theme of reconciliation, with a focus on building partnerships between organizations serving veterans and local mosques. They have engaged in global mentorship with Robi Damelin and Bassam Aramin in partnership with Rufus King High School and Milwaukee High School of the Arts.

“We are really excited in Serve 2 Unite to heed Pope Francis’ call to build bridges and engage in dialogue in the midst of our multicultural and inter-faith world!”

HIGH SCHOOLERS ARE READING ROLE MODELS FOR YOUNG STUDENTS Messmer Catholic Schools emphasizes early literacy intervention for future success Messmer High School students are sharing their love of reading with students at Messmer Saint Rose and Messmer Saint Mary through the Reading Role Models program. High school participants in the program take regular trips to one of the Messmer grade schools to read to and with younger students.

Messmer High School teacher and coordinator of the program, Anna Luberda, said she was inspired to create the program because of Messmer’s emphasis on literacy.

“Our students deserve the best education available, especially when it comes to literacy,” said Luberda.

“I wanted to let my high school students know that they are role models and I wanted to show the younger students that reading is essential at all levels of education.”

For the 2015-2016 school year, the program focused on 5th grade students. This year, students in the K4

and K5 classes have the chance to participate.

Luberda has seen enthusiastic participation from Messmer High School students.

“The students at Messmer are so dedicated to serving others and this seemed like a good way to get them involved. I figured a few students would volunteer, but I was overwhelmed with over 40 students who volunteered for the first trip,” she said.

Lizette Morales is a senior at Messmer High School and has participated in every Reading Role Models trip. “Reading Role Models helps get students interested in reading. It also helps the younger students to find out their favorite books and gets them to like reading more,” Morales said. “It’s good to read them lots of different stories so they can find out what they really like. “

SAINT ROSE + SAINT MARY

MILWAUKEE POLICE DEPARTMENT PARTNERS WITH MESSMER Events support schools and wider community Last November, Messmer partnered for the first time with the Milwaukee Police Department for a community Thanksgiving dinner. Messmer provided the location and student volunteers for the event that served a Thanksgiving meal to 350 community members.

Milwaukee Police Officer Edward Ciano, who had the initial idea for the event, is a Messmer alumnus.

He thought Messmer Saint Mary (formerly Messmer Preparatory) was a perfect location to host the event within the Riverwest community he wanted to serve.

The Riverwest Food Pantry and local Catholic parishes were also involved in inviting guests and organizing the event.

This year, Messmer will again serve as host for this significant community event on November 20.

“Messmer is excited to partner with the Milwaukee Police Department, MATC and other neighborhood

organizations and businesses,” said Mike Brauer, MHS ‘80, Messmer’s Vice President for Advancement.

“This dinner brings people together around food but the community-building is even more nourishing.”

The MPD also deepened its partnership with Messmer this year by participating in the second annual Harvest Festival, an event held by Messmer’s LEADERS program to celebrate Lights On Afterschool 2016. LEADERS is an after school program for high school students funded by a grant from 21st Century CLC. On Thursday, October 20, the students and faculty of LEADERS hosted Messmer elementary students and their families for an evening of pumpkin painting, slime making, book reading, trick-or-treating, bounce house jumping fun. This year, the MPD donated the candy for trick-or-treating and helped secure 150 pumpkins for painting. In addition, some members of the MPD joined in the evening’s activities, working with Messmer faculty to run the event.

CARDINAL HARVEY KICKS-OFF 90TH CELEBRATION

90 th Anniversary

Cardinal’s parents met at Messmer in the 1940s Messmer Catholic Schools is celebrating 90 years of groundbreaking educational leadership and community commitment. Since the doors of our high school campus opened in 1926, Messmer has produced thousands of exceptional graduates.

We count them and their families as our own.

To help us kick-off our 90th year, one of our own came home. On Monday, August 8, James Cardinal Harvey – the archpriest of one of Rome’s four major basilicas – celebrated Mass in the very building his parents (Robert and Ruth Harvey ‘43) met more than 75 years ago.

Cardinal Harvey and his family share a profound love for Messmer Catholic Schools – and it showed in the cardinal’s moving homily and warm reception of Mass attendees. The cardinal spent time with his mother and siblings touring Messmer High School before Mass, with Ruth sharing insights from her time as a student.

After Mass, Cardinal Harvey hosted a group for dinner at the Wisconsin Club, where he spoke about Messmer’s unique place in Milwaukee’s history and commissioned this “fourth generation” to continue this life-changing work. The cardinal blessed medals of St. Sebastian, our school’s patron (after our founder, Archbishop Sebastian Messmer), and gifted a medal to each attendee.

The vision of Messmer Catholic Schools in 2016 is an extension of its foundational calling to Catholic education in Milwaukee 90 years ago. Thank you to Cardinal Harvey for his ongoing commitment to Milwaukee, and to Messmer Catholic Schools.

Messmer Catholic Schools proudly celebrated Founders Day Tuesday, September 13, marking the 90th anniversary of the school’s opening. Throughout the day, trees were planted at four sites: St. Martin de Porres Parish (formerly St. Elizabeth), site of the original Diocesan High School, established in 1926; Messmer High School; Messmer Saint Mary Elementary (formerly Messmer Preparatory); and Messmer Saint Rose Elementary.

“Milwaukee is an immigrant city. Messmer is an immigrant school. We were built by this community, for this community,” said Messmer Catholic Schools President Jim Piatt. “Ninety years after we were founded, Messmer remains dedicated and true to its roots: serving those in the heart of the city.”

Fr. Tim Kitzke, along with other key community and educational leaders, joined Piatt at St. Martin de Porres Parish. That first dedication was to the priests of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. The second, at Messmer High School, honored donors to Messmer and the Save Messmer Committee. The dedication at Messmer Saint Mary (formerly Messmer Preparatory) celebrated the School Sisters of Notre Dame, who taught at Messmer High School and the schools that later merged to become Messmer Saint Mary. The final stop of the day was Messmer Saint Rose, where the tree planting was dedicated to the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters, former educators at St. Rose and St. Leo Schools (now Saint Rose Elementary).

Piatt said, “Messmer Catholic Schools would not exist today, 90 years later, without the dedication and many sacrifices of parents, teachers, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the Sinsinawa Dominicans, generous donors and community support.�

90 th Anniversary

THE LAST 3 DECADES |1986-2016 Continued from the Summer 2016 issue of MESSMERTODAY

After Messmer reopened as an independent Catholic school in 1985, enrollment slowly began to rise. Under the leadership of new principal Br. Bob Smith of the Capuchin Franciscans, the 1990s were a time of growth and groundbreaking.

In 1992, Messmer made Wisconsin state history by being the first religious school to petition the state for inclusion in its School Choice voucher program.

Messmer was accepted into the program three years later.

Messmer also began to expand its mission by offering its high quality educational experience to elementary school students. After the completion of a newly renovated and expanded facility in 1999, Messmer Preparatory Catholic School opened its doors in 2000, serving grades K4-8. Messmer High School was also fully renovated. The Messmer educational continuum became known as Messmer Catholic Schools.

Through the 1990s and 2000s, Messmer continued its commitment to excellence both in the classroom and

beyond. In 1998, Messmer High School received a grant from Apple Computers, Inc. and used the grant funding to start a student-run desktop publishing and printing business. In 2001, Messmer High School partnered with Shorewood High School to establish the first football program in the country to be shared between a public and a private high school.

Messmer, with the support of numerous donors, built scholarship programs in order to give more students the opportunity to benefit from a Messmer education.

The Portraits in Leadership Dinner was held for the first time in 2004, with the purpose of supporting scholarship programs and honoring community leaders who could serve as examples to Messmer students.

In 2007, at the request of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Messmer Catholic Schools expanded further with the addition of St. Rose and St. Leo Catholic Grade Schools, then known as Catholic Urban Academies.

Today, Messmer Catholic Schools serves nearly 1,700 students and their families on three campuses.

annual gala celebrates leaders of past, future Portraits in Leadership event welcomes 250 guests to the Harley Davidson Museum Alumni, students, and friends of Messmer Catholic Schools attended Portraits in Leadership to honor our award winners and hear the “good news” of Messmer Catholic Schools Messmer Catholic Schools established two awards this year: the Cornerstone Award and the Builder Award.

The awards were presented by emcee Lydia LoCoco, host of The Lydia LoCoco Show on Relevant Radio.

The Cornerstone Award was given to two recipients: the School Sisters of Notre Dame, for their selfless leadership at Messmer High School and Messmer Saint Mary (formerly Messmer Preparatory); and the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters, for their dedication and service as teachers and administrators at Messmer Saint Rose.

The Builder Award was given to Keith Stanley, executive director of Near West Side Partners, Inc., who attended Messmer Saint Rose. Messmer Catholic Schools works closesly with NWSP, as Messmer Saint Rose is in the Near West Side neighborhood. Keith’s energy and leadership is transforming that neighborhood, directly impacting Messmer families.

Bishop Donald Hying traveled from Gary, Indiana, to deliver the evening’s keynote address. Bishop Don spoke about our call to evangelize and form children in the faith to go out into the world, and how Messmer is uniquely positioned to answer that call in Milwaukee.

BUILDING 2 LEARN

BUILDS FUTURES FOR STUDENTS Consortium grows to support hands-on learning for STEM-focused careers Building2Learn is building momentum! After a successful year in 2015, the consortium is adding partners and serving more students. Building2Learn is a group of professional and educational organizations that provide project-based learning experiences for middle and high school students through a collaborative model of trades education.

These experiences prepare students in the Milwaukee region for success in skilled trades and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers.

Building2Learn addresses Milwaukee’s tangible needs. Data shows persistent barriers prevent students in poverty and students of color from entering STEM-based career fields. In response, Building2Learn creates learning itineraries leading to apprenticeships. Consortium partners include: All Hands Boatworks, SE Wisconsin Carpentry Training Center, University Laboratory School, C.G. Schmidt Construction and Messmer Catholic Schools.

The organizational model is a new form of partnership, intentionally crossing boundaries separating private, traditional public and public charter schools. Building2Learn’s multi-school, collaborative model of secondary school training challenges students to develop academic proficiency, life skills and career plans as they learn to use tools appropriately in real work environments.

The participating schools are: Messmer Catholic Schools, Carmen Schools of Science and Technology, Notre Dame Middle School, School District of Brown Deer and United Community Center Acosta Middle School.

Builders Clubs implemented in participating schools take place during regular school hours, after school and during the summer. After the first year, students who wish to continue participating connect personally with industry advisors. alumna establishes endowed stem fund Messmer alumna, Bernice Gebhard, ‘50, recently made a significant gift to support STEM education at Messmer High School. The gift was made in honor of Bernice’s deceased sister, LaVerne, ‘54 (whom Bernice described as very independent, spirited, and a lover of learning). We are honored to establish the LaVerne E., Bernice C., Frank J. and Helen F. Gebhard Family Endowed STEM Fund, a fund that will live in perpetuity with only a portion of the interest being used to cover program costs. Bernice also expressed her intention to include Messmer High School as a beneficiary in her estate plan.
