A MESSAGE INSIDE FROMMESSMER THE PRESIDENT TODAY
Dear Friends of Messmer, Welcome to the 2015-16 school year – although, by the time this issue of Messmer Today reaches you, we’ll be deep into the first semester! And what a packed semester it has been. Along with the usual academic business and busy-ness, we’ve already this year seen several special moments at Messmer: a Building2Learn boat launch; a Papal pilgrimage to Philadelphia; and a celebration of community leaders at our annual Portraits in Leadership gala. It can be easy for all of us to get caught up in the activity of any given day – but as you read this magazine, I invite you to join me in focusing on the basics. As Catholics, we know that in the beginning is always the Word. Here at Messmer Catholic Schools, we apply that lesson in two tangible ways. First of all, we start every school day with prayer. And second of all, we punctuate every class, every lesson, every moment with an emphasis on literacy education. We know the importance of personal dignity and purpose, and we know that attaining that dignity depends upon attaining literacy as soon as possible. Milwaukee’s cycle of poverty and violence cannot be broken as long as significant literacy deficits persist. Every day, Messmer is making active strides to challenge the problem of illiteracy. In the primary grades, children learn to read. By the end of Grade 3, they must be able to read to learn. In the coming months, you’ll be hearing more about literacy education and Messmer’s comprehensive literacy approach. As I said before, the Word and “the word” are the cores of our academic ministry. When a child is enabled as a reader, his or her dignity is affirmed, as is a legitimate chance to fulfill the potential of a meaningful life vocation. You will also hear more about our project-based mathematics reforms now under development. The Building2Learn boat project, and Messmer High School’s second year expansion of Project Lead the Way engineering courses have been excellent first steps. Our agenda is no mystery: we want to turn readers into builders. When our students build skills, faith, and integrity, they become hope-filled leaders who construct the future – whether they build churches, bridges, factories, schools, community organizations, or new ideas of which our generation has not yet conceived. This issue of Messmer Today includes our Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors. I would invite your review of this information and hope you share our enthusiasm for the efforts that led to a balanced budget for this past year. We humbly celebrate this success and prayerfully offer our gratitude to the thousands of alumni and friends whose financial support affirms the work of our teachers, parents, and their students. Thank you for your continued support of that ministry, and for your interest in the happenings at Messmer Catholic Schools.
Jim Piatt President

MESSMER
“The thing I will remember most about Messmer is the real happiness that exists among students and teachers. People are glad to be at Messmer. I have had many people ask me about the sprit of happiness and wonder about its source.” --Former Principal, Fr. Paul Esser in his farewell address to Messmer’s student body in our school newspaper, The Foursquare, pg. 2, April 24, 1970. Fr. Esser passed away in the winter of 2015 and was so touched by the spirit and people at Messmer during his short time that he chose to make an impactful gift to Messmer Catholic Schools in his estate planning.

MESSMER HIGH SCHOOL
PARTNERS IN PILGRIMAGE
J
ust a few short weeks ago, twenty Messmer High School students were able to join in the historic visit of Pope Francis to the United States for the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia. They traveled as pilgrims, and experienced the many blessings of a prayerful journey to be with Pope Francis. The theme of Pope Francis’ visit was “Love is our Mission,” and the pilgrims were able to explore the meaning of this call as they enjoyed making new friends, learned about themselves through prayer, and experienced spiritual renewal
through receiving Pope Francis’ blessing and in the celebration of Mass. The Messmer pilgrims are a friendly and gregarious bunch who made friends everywhere they went! They made friends while on the subway with women from Portugal, with the military personnel who were keeping them safe, with a priest from New Jersey, with people singing Spanish praise songs in the subway line, and with a church group from Poland. The pilgrims even participated in a
HIGH SCHOOL UPDATE
street art exhibit about love and made connections by learning to use one’s voice in a positive way. It was appropriate that the trip was called “Partners in Pilgrimage” as our Messmer pilgrims built friendships with students from our partnering schools of Pius XI and Catholic Memorial High School. As any pilgrim can attest, there are certain challenges that typically accompany a pilgrimage. There is an element of the unknown and of not knowing exactly what each day will bring. There can often be discomfort from walking long distances and standing on one’s feet for long periods of time. And depending on the experience, interacting with crowds of strangers can certainly unleash a variety of interpersonal experiences! Our pilgrims were fortunate enough to experience each of these challenges… and were called to reflect on them prayerfully. Each of these challenges presented an opportunity for the pilgrims to learn about themselves, their relationship with others, and to consider how they could respond in a loving manner, since the call of Pope Francis was that, “Love is our Mission.” For most of our pilgrims, a culminating experience of the pilgrimage occurred when we were able to be in the presence of Pope Francis. The energy of the crowd as we awaited his arrival in the Popemobile was intense! We were finally able to see him, from only about 15 feet away, and we were amazed and blessed by the experience! Then, at Sunday’s Mass, as a Messmer family, we were able to receive Eucharist that was consecrated directly by Pope Francis. As one student noted, [the pilgrimage] “brought me closer to my Messmer family, and it made me realize more that we are all blessed. Most of all, it made me appreciate life and people.” It was truly an emotional, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of Pope Francis’ first visit to the United States, to receive his blessing, and to live out the meaning of the phrase, “Love is our Mission.”

Building2Learn Initiative Launches Boats – and Dreams
M
essmer Catholic Schools put STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education into action this fall at the Building2Learn boat launch. Students, parents, Building2Learn consortium leaders, and community leaders met on the banks of the Menomonee River Tuesday, September 30, to celebrate the culmination of the All Hands Boatworks program. This initiative emphasizes the importance of learning practical trade skills. Students from Messmer and several other schools spent part of their summer learning carpentry basics and building their own boats, applying math and teamwork skills along the way. The Building2Learn consortium made it possible. A partnership between Messmer, All Hands Boatworks, and other area schools and nonprofits, Building2Learn was founded to offer programs and experiences to augment STEM lessons students are learning in the classrooms. The goal is to introduce students to career possibilities they may not have otherwise considered. The September boat launch ceremony celebrated both the skills these students had acquired, and the students themselves.
“It all goes back to STEM,” said Susie Falk, founder of The Falk Group PR and longtime friend of Messmer. “It’s where the good-paying jobs are. The STEM career options are as numerous as the jobs are rewarding.” “Today is not just about launching boats; it’s about launching hopes and dreams for these kids,” echoed Bill Nimke, founder and president of All Hands Boatworks. “They are capable of accomplishing far more than they think they can.” Community leaders from Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful and Marquette University joined in on the celebration, acknowledging the value of STEM education. Marquette University president Dr. Michael Lovell thanked the Building2Learn partners and sponsors. “You’re investing in our future, and I know with activities like this, we will have a very bright future,” he said. The ceremony concluded with a christening of the boats, and a sparkling cider toast! Then, Messmer students officially launched the five handmade boats.

MHS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
Ken Klatkiewicz: In His Own Words
F
or Messmer High School Athletic Director Ken Klatkiewicz, it isn’t so much about wins and losses, points and statistics; he is more interested in the specific strengths, ambitions and emotional needs of the individual student.
“I think other school districts view it as an extracurricular activity, and that is secondary to us. You are here as a student, and once you accomplish your daily duties as a student, then the privilege of becoming an athlete is afforded to you.”
“Wins and losses are great, but we deal with so many variables in society, in home life situations, that will factor into wins and losses and dedication and focus. So it can’t always be about that,” said Klatkiewicz. “There are other things I worry about. You want to see the participation numbers go up. You want to make sure the kids are having fun.”
Klatkiewicz began his career at Messmer 10 years ago as a guidance counselor. With a bachelor’s degree in social work and a Master’s in school counseling, he has always enjoyed working with students, helping them find their own strengths.
Klatkiewicz, who also serves as associate dean of students, focuses on eligibility – meaning, he keeps his athletes on track academically. “[Messmer has] a 2.0 GPA minimum, from your freshman to your senior year. We view participation in sports as a privilege. It is not something simply given to you because you are enrolled here,” said Klatkiewicz. That academic emphasis is just one thing that differentiates Messmer from other schools in the district.
“My career has been focused on the students sitting right in front of me,” said Klatkiewicz. “The work that is done in the classroom – I couldn’t do what teachers do. I couldn’t do what administrators do. That’s just me. But in dealing with the student and in helping them find their strengths – whether those strengths be in the classroom or preparing for their future or on the athletic playing field – is what my niche is.” For the past three years, Klatkiewicz has been head basketball coach for Messmer. Making the move from part-time coach to full-time athletic director has been smooth for him because, he said, “in both roles, I basically get students refocused throughout the day.” That day looks different hour-to-hour, but as athletic director, Klatkiewicz manages everything

from practice schedules to bus pick-ups; gym set-up to coaching meetings; concession stand volunteers to game referees. Moreover, he attends almost every home game and many away games. It’s all worth it for Klatkiewicz, who is motivated by his students’ dedication and team-oriented attitudes. “For our students, being involved in something bigger than themselves, representing their school, being able to have a jacket or a warm up or a team jersey – they are proud of those things,” said Klatkiewicz. “They enjoy being able to represent their school, and work hard for that. They get an understanding of competition, but when the game is over, they want to shake hands with the other team and say that they gave their best effort. Win or lose, they know they’re doing it for something other than themselves.” That sort of motivation is music to Klatkiewicz’s ears. He and his coaching team are primarily concerned with the life skills that are woven into athletic drills. They think of it as building the true “complete athlete.”
“Athletics give these kids a different kind of mindset,” Klatkiewicz said. “These kids are different. They’re different not because they’re better, but athletes are expected to go to class, to get their homework in and somehow they’re supposed to squeeze in another 15-20 hours that a normal student doesn’t have to do. It helps these students on so many levels, be it in learning leadership skills or social skills. It gives them time to focus on them and a chance to determine their strengths and weaknesses so when they leave in in four years, they are better prepared to get a job, go to college, join the military, because they are more self aware. We at Messmer do it better than most.
“...dealing with the student and in helping them find their strengths – whether those strengths be in the classroom or preparing for their future or on the athletic playing field – is what my niche is.” Ken Klatkiewicz
“Personal skills are built into the game. Students learn to be disciplined and self-aware,” said Klatkiewicz. “Many of our kids have also taken the attitude of ‘I want to play basketball, and in order to play basketball, I need to stay in shape.’ So they understand that they should do cross country in the fall in order to be ready for the basketball season. We are seeing that whole mindset of the student being a ‘complete athlete’ in every sense of the word.” And according to Klatkiewicz, Messmer does this exceptionally well. The academic eligibility requirement combined with the self-awareness and self-disciplined required to succeed in the athletic

George Meyer and with the approval of Archbishop Sebastian Messmer, Messmer High School (originally known as Diocesan High) was opened as the first archdiocesan high school in Milwaukee. The school grew to over 1,200 students during the 1940s (using two shifts of students) until enrollment declined to less than 300 students in the mid1980s. In 1984, the archdiocese decided to close the school. Later that year, the group of parents, friends, and alumni re-opened the school as an independent Catholic high school. Starting with an initial enrollment of 115 students, the high school has rebounded to over 700 students in 2015, the most since the early 1980s.
Messmer High School has received national and international attention for its ability to help students of diverse ethnic, social, and religious backgrounds succeed. As the first religious school to apply and be accepted into the Milwaukee Parental School Choice Program in 1992, Messmer has continued to be a national leader in educational reform. Visitors from around the United States and from around the globe regularly visit the school, and the Messmer story has been told in numerous
Catholic elementary school, known as Messmer Preparatory Catholic School. Then in 2007, Messmer, at the request of the archdiocese, added two more grade schools that would become known as St. Rose and St. Leo Catholic School. These elementary schools, along with Messmer High School, form Messmer Catholic Schools, the first independent Catholic school system in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Student enrollment at Messmer High School, Messmer Preparatory Catholic School, and St. Rose and St. Leo Catholic School now totals approximately 1,600 students. Messmer has consistently had an extremely high graduation rate, with more than 85% of graduates attending two- or four-year colleges across the United States. Daily attendance at the high school is regularly 95% or higher. The strength of Messmer Catholic Schools lies not in the beauty of its architecture, but in the lives of the 1,600 students and more than 10,000 alumni. It is this strength and stability that form the true cornerstone of this institution and upon which our greatest achievements are built.

PORTRAITS IN LEADERSHIP
Today’s Readers; Tomorrow’s Leaders
N
early 250 guests gathered at the Wisconsin Club in downtown Milwaukee Monday, October 26, to celebrate this year’s Messmer Catholic Schools’ Portraits in Leadership honorees. This year, award winners were recognized for their community leadership and their support of literacy education for greater Milwaukee and, specifically, Messmer students. Messmer President Jim Piatt, along with honorary chair Dr. Joan Prince, Vice Chancellor of UW-Milwaukee, congratulated Cecelia Gore ‘76 (executive director, Milwaukee Brewers Community Foundation), Dan McKinley (president and CEO, PAVE) and Dr. Mary Meehan (president, Alverno College) as the 2015 Portraits in Leadership honorees. Literacy was, indeed, the word of the night – vintage library books decorated each table and Messmer students of all ages drew hand-made cards illustrating their favorite books. Messmer High School students greeted guests and shared stories of how reading impacted their lives.
