Although 2019 and 2020 have been years marked by change and challenge for our campus and our world, one of my greatest privileges as president is to recognize and applaud the good work of our faculty, staff and administrators.

This electronic memory book has been designed to pay tribute to those who have retired or chosen to participate in the voluntary separation program for FY20.

ROAD TO RECONCILIATION Jean is well known for implementing programs that simultaneously serve student learning, the development of Messiah University's strengths in inclusive excellence and cultural intelligence, and the needs of the Harrisburg community in all its diversity. Her commitment is manifested in many ways, including the efforts she puts in to recruit and retain students in our Hoverter program and the regular attention she gives to matters of inclusive excellence and diversity in the programming associated with the Center for Public Humanities and the Department of English.

Under her leadership the Center has truly become a center for public humanities, working to take the humanities from Messiah University into the City of Harrisburg in a variety of ways. The Poetry in Place program has become a central means by which Jean engages 5th graders in the city in understanding the city's history in all its racial and cultural complexity. The program itself engages our Public Humanities Fellows in tutoring students alongside guest poet/mentors from the community.

The results have worked seamlessly with other projects such as our CIC grant for Public Engagement, culminating in a play performed at multiple city high schools to celebrate Black history month. The play built on research done by Public Humanities Fellows and by our Digital Harrisburg project to imaginatively address forgotten elements

of Harrisburg's history and their relevance to the present. TEAM FALCON AWARD Over the past year, the preparation for the re-accreditation of the graduate counseling program required an immense team effort. The CACREP site visit during the first week of February 2020 went extremely well with the site visit team making specific note of our program, the institution and the preparation. Ultimately the work resulted in the highest accreditation possible. Not surprisingly, the graduate counseling program has grown significantly since its beginning 10 years ago and will continue to attract motivated and talented students to Messiah, build connections with the community, and train competent professionals.

Dwight Allshouse Dwight worked for Messiah for many years, left and then returned for 9 more years. He was dependable and would help anyone with anything. Dwight was known for his ability to fix any piece of equipment, solve almost any issue and for his kindness and sense of humor. He is greatly missed.

Creta Bieber For the past several years Creta Bieber has served as the anchor to the Division of Student Success and Engagement.  Her ability to steer, guide and support members of the division toward common goals and purpose made us a united team able to collaboratively and efficiently do our work.  Her administrative skills, ability to manage budgets and her warm personality were a gift to all of us as well as the students and parents that crossed our paths.  Creta was able to calm the chaos and provide perspective at the times when we most needed it and for that, we are deeply grateful.

George Blackburn George leaves behind a legacy of meaningful interactions with students whom he mentored over the years. George retired from Messiah University as Campus Events Manager and his example of Christian leadership is what he will be remembered for. George left Pennsylvania and moved to Florida to enjoy his retirement on the golf course.

We s B o w e r Wes was very detail-oriented and he used that skill to manage all campus mail addresses. He oversaw mail metering and retail postage sales and kept careful track of how many packages went in and out of the campus post office each year. As he listened to the bluegrass music he loved, we estimate he processed over a half million packages in his time with our department.

Jack Cole Jack Cole bleeds Messiah blue! His creativity and administrative skills over his career shaped the undergraduate sports management major, the college athletics leadership track in the masters of higher education, the graduate assistantship program in athletics, robust strategic plans in athletics and most of all his relationships with students and colleagues.  Jack brought professionalism and a great sense of humor to the workplace in both the curricular and cocurricular programs at Messiah.

Raymond Derk Ray celebrated 18 years at Messiah. He was the go-to guy in Frey Hall, from cleaning up a spill to unlocking doors. Ray was willing to help whenever and wherever needed. He went out of his way to encourage students with a cheerful smile and warm greeting whenever he saw them in Frey Hall. He will be missed!

David Dzaka Throughout his years of service to the Messiah community, David Dzaka led with intellectual rigor, humble wisdom, and memorable joy.

As a teacher and scholar of postcolonial and world literatures and a cross cultural professor to Ghana, David invited both students and colleagues to examine the cultural contexts that surround literary texts as well as their own lives of learning and faith. David is a beloved teacher, colleague, and friend whose life and work has undoubtedly made us better as an academic institution and community of faith.

Donna Fink Donna Fink, whether in her role as Compliance Coordinator or when she first joined the College to support the Provost’s Office, has been a truly dedicated, remarkably productive and change-inspiring employee for Messiah University. Under her care and wise insight, the University’s environmental health and workplace safety programming has grown from the most minimal practices to a highly effective EHS/OSHA compliance program.

Donna’s commitment to the University and its employees has been nothing short of exceptional – she will be sorely missed.

Rick Hammaker Rick started his career with Messiah in 1980, completing the last 10 years in Campus Events.

We are grateful that Rick has come out of retirement to work part-time with us again in Campus Events. Rick has a passion for our students and cares for them deeply. Fun to be around and willing to help anyone anytime, he has formed many lifelong friendships over his many years here at Messiah.

Ryan Hannigan Ryan, a dependable financial aid employee for 23 years, always made himself available to assist students and parents through group financial aid presentations and one-on-one appointments. The knowledge, patience, and graciousness that Ryan displayed when serving families in the financial aid process for the first time is something we always appreciated. We are so thankful for Ryan’s gracious approach to these students and their parents.

Gene Heintzelman Gene celebrated 18 years of service here at Messiah.

Gene worked his entire career in Climenhaga Fine Arts Center and the High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. His knowledge of these areas will be missed. He was instrumental, no pun intended, in providing for the needs of the numerous events held over the years. Congratulations on your retirement!

Elaine Henderson Elaine Henderson served as a faculty member for over 40 years, leading the vocal area in the Department of Music for much of that time. Known for her encyclopedic knowledge of vocal pedagogy, her excellent rapport with her students, and her leadership in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, she is best remembered for her work in musical theatre and directing the jazz ensemble One College Ave.

Mary Holloway During her long tenure at Messiah University, Mary Holloway’s myriad contributions on various institutional committees helped shape important academic policies and procedures. In the Department of Communication, Mary’s leadership of our National Honor Society chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, her willing assistance with many departmental events, and her discerning and hospitable interview style with more than 100 prospective students applying for the Humanities Scholars Program demonstrated her commitment to supporting all facets of Messiah’s mission. Perhaps her greatest gift has been her service to her students and advisees, encouraging them in personal and professional growth, helping them connect their majors with their gifts and passions, and empowering them to find their voices as they set out on journeys of self-discovery.

Diane Hunsinger Diane Hunsinger worked many years supporting Messiah faculty, specifically as a copyright specialist and Faltron administrator. In addition she served as administrative support for Information Technology Services. Her care and concern for each person she assisted was appreciated by all. Congratulations on your retirement, Diane!

S t eve n Ke n n e dy Steve served at Messiah for 31 years in Fleet Services serving as the Fleet Mechanic and cared for over 100 vehicles as if they were his own. Many faculty, staff and students used the fleet for off-campus travel without the worries of vehicle breakdowns or vehicle safety concerns. This was all made possible because of Steve’s commitment in how he managed vehicle safety inspections and vehicle repairs with care.

Robert Kilmer As Associate Professor of Computer and Information Science for twenty-two years, Bob brought to the university and to his students a varied professional background in computing, mathematics, and operations research, and he taught regularly for three different academic departments. Bob considered himself an institutional servant and was well-known for his willingness take on new courses and his eagerness to teach collaboratively.

James Makowski Jim was well-known for his expertise in genetics and microbiology. For thirty-nine years, Messiah students and his colleagues knew him as a professor with a relaxed manner, a quick wit, and someone who cared deeply about student academic progress and well-being. He was especially helpful as a mentor to secondary education students as they navigated their student teaching experience.

Joanna Matlak Joanna was part of the Murray Library staff over 20 years and has served faithfully as Evening Circulation Supervisor, coordinating course reserves, fielding questions at the Circulation Desk, and supervising student workers in the evenings. Joanna volunteered as a “human book” in the “Human Library” events at Murray and shared her story of first-hand experiences in Poland during the war. Joanna will be not be forgotten because, her love of plants has left its mark in every corner of the library with flourishing plants in beautiful pots, contributing to the ongoing welcoming environment.

Heidi May Heidi celebrated 33 years at Messiah. In the last few years, Heidi provided leadership to the staff in the residence halls, passing along her knowledge to others. Her commitment to excellent customer service provided our students a safe and clean place to call home. In the summer Heidi will be spending her days at her camper and enjoying the outdoors. We wish Heidi well as she moves into a new phase of her life.

Lawrie Merz Lawrie joined the faculty at Messiah in 1997 and has served faithfully as the Public Services Librarian, the librarian liaison to multiple departments, a member of many faculty committees, and the creative energy behind many memorable library events and displays.

Her ability to network and her compassionate care for students broadened her influence beyond the office, as she became a “Mom� to many international students through the years, mentoring and developing friendships that extend beyond graduation. Lawrie has left a legacy at Murray Library and Messiah University that will continue to bear fruit for years to come.

Douglas Miller For forty-one years, Doug brought such passion and intensity to his exercise physiology lectures in the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science that students needed to carbohydrate load after class just to finish the day. As Professor of Health and Exercise Science, Doug poured his heart and soul into his students, who visited his office not only for individualized instruction, but also because they wanted to share their life experiences with him. Doug has been recognized for his teaching, his scholarship, and his service as Director of Employee Wellness and the Messiah College community was infinitely blessed to have him as a faculty member.

Norma Miller Serving as mentor, advisor, trusted and faithful friend to students and colleagues alike, Norma Miller’s two decades of service to the Messiah community will long be remembered. Her vibrant Christian witness and role in shaping the lives of students in Student Conduct, and Residence Life & Housing has left a lasting imprint on our community and our collective hearts. Norma, we will miss you dearly and pray God’s continued blessing as our Way Maker for your life and continued ministry.

Donald Murk Donald Murk, Professor of Early Childhood Education, exemplifies the qualities of a Christian educator, servant, and scholar. Through his example, he inspired a whole generation of teacher leaders to embody the qualities of Christ-centered love and care of students. As colleagues, students and friends of Don, we would agree that we all better teachers and human beings for having known him.

Don, you will be missed!

Douglas Nealy Doug served Messiah for over 37 years as an expert in both carpentry and masonry construction trades. His attention to detail and care for his craft was notable. Not surprisingly, Doug won the confidence of staff and faculty all over campus as he brought their ideas to fruition in finished projects that far exceeded their expectations. Doug was a reliable and committed colleague throughout his time at Messiah.

Randy Ness We are so grateful that Randy Ness’ 40+ year career at Messiah took him full-circle, from admissions into other great gigs (like internships and alumni and parent relations) but ultimately back to enrollment where he served students and families from Lancaster County & Colorado and through his role as liaison to our College Honors Program. The best recruiters are impassioned believers, and Randy’s loyalty to his alma mater is to be commended!

C a t hy Po i e s z Cathy Poiesz began 25 years of unconditional dedication to Messiah University on September 11, 1995. She made a positive impact in Financial Aid, Housing, Human Resources and Student Financial Services, making improvements and advancements that will benefit students and employees for years to come. Cathy consistently championed our students and worked tirelessly to provide excellent service to them and started the Newman Club to welcome and support Catholic students on campus for the past 21 years.

Coral Shambaugh Coral is retiring after nearly 18 years at Messiah.

She always made space in her day for our Messiah students. She was an organizer, problem solver, and a good listener. Coral used those skills and her compassionate disposition to support countless students through many trying semesters.

Coral, you will be greatly missed and we wish you a very happy retirement!

Diane Shearer Diane never failed to impress us with her ability to take on additional tasks, including web page editing and processing various data files supporting the financial aid programs. She has been an outstanding supervisor and on-campus “mom” to student workers, and has also been our office “morale builder,” often bringing in treats and posting humorous signs around the office. We will miss Diane as she has been a dependable and conscientious colleague and friend.

Susan Shultz Susan began her journey at Messiah in Faculty Services back in 1997 and within a couple of years, she was supervising the team. Susan was dedicated to streamlining processes in order to provide the best possible service to the faculty, while at the same time building lasting, working relationships. She carried that ethic into her role in College Services as well as her most recent role in ITS. Susan always had a smile on her face and truly enjoyed serving the people for which she gave support.

Daniel Soltis Dan spent 30 years at Messiah and was a dedicated Facility Maintenance Supervisor. He spent many long hours dealing with late night and weekend emergencies and always ensured that the students had an environment that allowed them to experience a productive learning experience. Dan retired from Messiah and plans to spend his free time enjoying his home in Florida and doing wood working projects.

William Strausbaugh William “Bill” Strausbaugh provided stellar service to Messiah throughout four decades. Bill is a dedicated, multi-talented lifelong learner who fulfilled positions as Professor, Executive Assistant to the President, Dean of Enrollment Management, Associate Provost and Vice President for Information Technology Services. Bill brought knowledge and expertise to all his roles and demonstrated compassionate care for his colleagues. Bill’s love for all things Messiah has also been evident outside of work – he is a committed Falcon fan who can often be found cheering on our athletes and coaches to victory.

Bertha Thompson Berte Thompson worked for 20 years in Information Technology Services (ITS). Berte could be counted upon to actively seek solutions to technology problems. She was the sort of person to purchase lunch for members of her team regularly! Her passion and care for supporting the use of technologies on campus, specifically toward enhancing student learning, was evident on a daily basis.

Diane Thornton Diane was extremely dedicated to selfless service and cared deeply for every student that she was able to reach with her infectious laughter and genuine “cool Mom” personality. While at the Union Café, service excellence, food quality and especially safety were of the utmost importance to her! Diane will be truly missed at Messiah and was a blessing to all who are fortunate enough to know her!

Louann Zinsmeister Dr. Louann Zinsmeister joined Messiah College in the fall of 1994 and came to the Department of Nursing to develop the Adult Degree Program in nursing. She excelled in teaching, scholarship and service and was promoted to Full Professor. She was a creative and entrepreneurial leader, who launched the undergraduate Adult Degree Program and years later the graduate programs in Nursing at Messiah that resulted in a successful CCNE accreditation and Messiah’s first doctoral program (Doctor of Nursing Practice). In addition to being a valued colleague in nursing, Dr. Zinsmeister is a talented musician, who shared her expertise as a pianist and organist both within the Messiah community and at her local congregation.

DAN SMITH Dan Smith served Messiah University for 32 years, retiring from full-time work in April 2020. He started his career at Messiah as an HVAC Technician and worked his way up to Facility Maintenance Manager. Dan’s high level of HVAC knowledge served Messiah well.

Over the years, Dan provided essential services for campus emergencies, ranging from building floods, major sewer backups, heating and air conditioning failures, power outages and blizzards. Dan could always be counted on to be there when needed.

As technology changed, he continued to learn and grow.

Because he loved Messiah so much, when he retired from full time work, he returned to the grounds department as a parttime mower.

At retirement, Dan provided leadership and oversight to the overall maintenance of campus buildings, fleet program, key services, and central receiving.

Dan’s professional contributions were deeply appreciated and the willingness that he modeled was an inspiration to everyone that came into contact with him.

Dan’s in-depth knowledge and fun-loving personality created a work environment that his staff not only learned and grew from, but it also provided a great place for the employees to laugh and enjoy their work.

Sadly, he passed away in August 2020. He will be dearly missed.

TRUC TRAN Truc Tran worked for Messiah for 25 years in Campus Events on the third shift. He cleaned the basement locker room area in Eisenhower for all 25 years.

He was featured in an article in the Bridge and when he was out on sick leave, athletes, students, and employees signed three poster boards to let him know they missed him.

Truc developed a bond with all the athletes who came through his work area over the years. They called him Mr. U and they told him about their games when they won or lost. Truc watched games in person whenever he could and if not, he checked scores online.

Truc was scheduled to retire June 2020, but sadly he passed away in May 2020.

He will always be a part of our Campus Events family.
