We are proud to have one of the few books on Pedro Arrupe SJ, whose cause for beatification has just opened. Bestselling author, Brian Grogan SJ has written a very enlightening and readable account of this special Jesuit leader. You will find the lives of several other Jesuits in the second collection edited by Patrick Carberry SJ, Jesuit Lives: At Home in the World. A wonderful collection of delicious recipes, originally prepared as the main Sunday meal at the Jesuit house, ‘Manresa’, in Birmingham. Each recipe is accompanied by a saint with a (sometimes tenuous) connection to the ingredients or the dish itself. A brief life of each saint gives the book a very special dimension. Two Irish women living in Birmingham wanted to give something back to the Jesuits. They decided a way to do so was to cook Sunday dinner for them, and they continued to do this for twentytwo years. This is the eagerly awaited follow up to the best selling, Finding God in the Mess. In this new collection the authors address tough issues such as fear, anxiety, suicide and anger. They have received much feedback from workshops based on the first book, and these are some of the topics on which people have asked for help. As well as offering a meditation or a way of praying, the authors suggest scripture and a simple ritual. Once again the book is based on Jim and Fr Brendan’s own unique combination of practical prayer and Ignatian spirituality. The Jesuits have always defined themselves, not by any particular place or specific ministry, but by a universal outreach. They were ready to go wherever the needs were great and the opportunities promising. Adaptability became their hallmark. From early on, the Jesuits spread rapidly: to the Far East, starting with Francis Xavier in 1540, to North and South America, to Africa and eventually to Australasia. Dom Eugene Boylan, OCR, was an Irish-born Trappist monk and writer. Ordained a priest in 1937, he began writing on spiritual topics, and in the 1940s he published two books, This Tremendous Lover and Difficulties in Mental Prayer, which became international bestsellers and were translated into many languages. In the late 1950s he undertook an extensive lecture tour of the United States (“This is the best retreat we ever had at Gethsemani,” commented Thomas Merton after Boylan’s visit there), and in 1962 he was elected the fourth abbot of Mount St Joseph Abbey in Roscrea, Ireland. Two years later he died in a car crash. Distinguished Jesuit historian, Thomas J Morrissey, has produced the first biography of this important Irish writer.

Social Commentator and Advocate: 1876-1951 Martin Walsh
Fr Richard Stanislaus Devane SJ was a social advocate and campaigner in the early years of the Irish Free State, yet, surprisingly little has been written about him. Some recognition has been given to his work on social aspects of legislation in the first decades of the new Irish Free State. Other than that, there are only vignettes of his call for an Ireland moulded according to true Christian values. In his early career as a parish priest little has been documented about his zeal to order and control the lives of the working-classes. In truth, his opinions, beliefs and thinking were shaped before he joined the Jesuits in 1918. This comprehensive study is therefore required to place Fr Richard Devane SJ within the narrative of Irish history of the early twentieth century.
