Preface This
is a snap-shot description of a rapidly and continually evolving situation. My hope is that it may become part of the kind of conversation between concerned Christians and fellow citizens, believers and non-believers alike, which our time of crisis requires. We need all the resources at our disposal to tackle the problems facing us. It is my conviction that Christian social and theological reflection may be one such resource, of greater significance than is, perhaps, commonly appreciated. I would like to thank Cathy Molloy, Margaret Burns, Patrick Hume, Tony O’Riordan, Frank O’Hanlon, Bill Toner, Fiona Fullam and Brian Lennon who read the text at various stages of its development and made helpful comments. This final version is, of course, my sole responsibility. text
