Leo XIV

An Augustinian Life in Context

9781788127578

Paperback 116pp

210 x 140 mm

€12.95

£11.95

Who is Robert Francis Prevost, the until-now relatively unknown Augustinian who leads nearly 1.5 billion Catholics as Pope Leo XIV? This concise biography by Brian Heffernan, an expert on Augustinian history, looks at the successive contexts in which Prevost lived and worked before his election as pope: Chicago, Peru, Rome, and the Order of St Augustine, with which Prevost has been connected since his youth.

In Leo XIV: An Augustinian Life in Context, Heffernan surveys the historical, economic and sociological environments in which Prevost has lived and worked, providing a rich, situated view of the new pope. The inclusion of rare Augustinian material, plus his comprehensive understanding of the modern history of the Augustinian Order, allows the author to offer insights into the Augustinian charisms that have shaped his life and thinking.

Dr Brian Heffernan holds a PhD from Maynooth University. As a historian of modern Catholicism, he has written extensively on the Augustinian Friars. He lives in Brussels and is a researcher at the Catholic universities of KU Leuven and UCLouvain in Belgium and an editor at DHGE –Louvain Dictionary of Church History.

The Living Image Returning to the Heart

Anna Burke

9781788127639

Paperback

104pp

170 x 110mm

€9.95

£8.95

Dilexit Nos, the 2024 encyclical from Pope Francis, offers an inspiring reflection on the Sacred Heart of Jesus and how this familiar image helps us reflect on how human love and divine love live as one in the person of Jesus Christ. The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus connects time and eternity, human and divine, yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Anna Burke calls us towards the Sacred Heart for a deeper look. In fifteen reflections on the many aspects of the heart – cosmic, authentic, courageous, forgiving, renewing – she encourages us to return and find what is new in every century, old in every history book and universal in every language: the love of God.

With suggested scripture readings, reference to Dilexit Nos and points for reflection, The Living Image is the perfect guide to reconnecting with the Sacred Heart. Through the Sacred Heart, you can ground your life in what Pope Francis has called ‘the unifying principle of all reality’.

Anna Burke is an Irish Sister of Mercy. Over her career, her work in the areas of teaching, faith development, scripture reflection, school chaplaincy and spiritual writing has brought her to Florida, USA, Zambia, South Africa and Ireland. She has written widely and published several books on spiritual reflection.

The Ignatian Examen

Conversing Daily with God

9781788127660

Paperback 96pp

170 x 110mm

€9.95

£8.95

The Examen is the one prayer St Ignatius couldn’t do without. For centuries it has been at the centre of Jesuit life. A simple prayer, it directs you to find God in your daily experience. With practice, you can learn to discern how God is conversing with you in the ups and downs of your day. Your feelings of frustration and joy and your daily encounters with family, friends, colleagues and even strangers become the basis of a daily conversation with God, where you and God speak as close friends.

Brendan McManus SJ takes you through the five steps of the Examen, teaching you how to use it to make better decisions each day and to find where God is leading you in your life.

Brendan McManus SJ is a spiritual director and retreat giver. He has published several books with Messenger Publications including Channelling the Inner Fire: Ignatian Spirituality in 15 Points; The Way to Manresa: Discoveries along the Ignatian Camino, Brothers in Arms, Living the Camino Back Home (with Katherine O’Flynn FCJ) and, with Jim Deeds, Discover God Daily, and the trilogy, Finding God in the Mess, Deeper into the Mess and Emerging from the Mess.

£18.95

The most important event in the history of the Catholic Church in over sixty years, the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops took place from 2021 to 2024. The principles and guidelines that the Synod provided for the Church are explained and discussed in this book.

These include: how personal spiritual renewal and structural reform go hand in hand; the role of all the People of God in discernment, decisionmaking and implementation processes within their local parishes and dioceses; the formation that may be needed for people to assume formal ministries and leadership roles; the need for accountability and transparency in the Church and the importance of evaluating Church bodies and activities on an ongoing basis.

Changing to be Faithful: Renewing the Church through Synodality is intended for all who wish to understand and experience more fully God’s love made present in the Risen Lord and to bear witness to this, whether in their everyday lives or in formal roles within the church community.

Eamonn Conway DD is professor of integral human development at the University of Notre Dame Australia. Robert St Leger SJ (1788-1856)

Thomas J. Morrissey SJ

£11.95

Robert St Leger SJ lived and worked in the first half of the nineteenth century. Born in Ireland, he was educated at the Jesuit college at Stonyhurst, England, where he experienced God’s call to become a Jesuit. Even by the standards of the day, his wide-ranging skills and acquired experience during the course of his life and mission were impressive.

However, like many Irish Catholics in the 18th and 19th centuries, he left very little in the way of personal documents. Fellow Jesuit Thomas J. Morrissey SJ, author of several books on historical Jesuits of note, has gathered information from religious institutions and government organisations to compile a chronology of St Leger’s life and activities. In doing so, he documents the depth of St Leger’s vocation and the extent of his hard work and brings a littleknown but impactful spiritual guide, educationalist and administrator out from the shadows of history.

Thomas J. Morrissey SJ is a Jesuit priest, an educationalist, historian and author. He is a former headmaster of Crescent College Comprehensive, Limerick, and former director of the National College of Industrial Relations, Dublin. He has written extensively on Jesuits of historical, theological and social significance.
