Welcome to our Spring 2021 Catalogue Dear Reader, At this extraordinary time, many of us have found great consolation in reading. Print book sales in Ireland in 2020 reached a twelve-year high. Sadly, many bookshops had to keep their doors closed for much of the year. They will need our support when they finally re-open. In the meantime, many are trading online and would appreciate a visit. Our own website, www.messenger.ie, has seen a great increase in orders. We have all been spending a lot more time online and using more and more technology – Zoom and Alexa have become part of our everyday lives. Seán McDonagh gives us a timely warning about the possible consequences of unrestrained technological development and urges us to consider the ethical implications in his new book, Robots, Ethics and the Future of Jobs. If you would prefer a bit of peaceful inspiration, you will enjoy The Way to Manresa which is perfect armchair travelling along the Ignatian Camino. Hopefully you can then travel there in reality when we can all fly again. Another book which will cheer everyone up is Dipping into Life by popular author, Fr Alan Hilliard with his beautiful photographs and inspirational pieces. We celebrate two remarkable women with The Story of Nano Nagle and Brian Lennon’s fascinating Mary Magadalene and the Gardener, a reflection on the role of women in the church. Although we can’t attend Mass we can still study the readings with Kieran O’Mahony’s accessible commentaries, Hearers of the Word: Lent & Holy Week, and Easter to Pentecost. The faculty at Maynooth College look at how the pandemic has affected our lives and the long-term implications for church and society in Maynooth College Reflects on COVID 19. This year marks the 500th anniversary of the conversion of St Ignatius – a very special year for the Society of Jesus. Patrick Corkery SJ has written an introductory booklet on Saint Ignatius of Loyola, and we publish Patrick Goujon SJ’s masterly study of the letters of St Ignatius, Counsels of the Holy Spirit. Michael Barnes considers An Ignatian Approach to Interreligious Dialogue and Thomas J Morrissey completes his work on the Irish Jesuits in the 18th century with Mission to a Suffering People. Happy reading!

Robots, Ethics and the Future of Jobs Séan McDonagh
Foreword by Karlin Lillington
9781788123068 Paperback 184pp 210x 140mm J505 €19.95 £18.95
Séan McDonagh is a Columban missionary. He spent over two decades working in the Philippines and has written extensively on ecology and theology. He was awarded the Annual Partnership for Global Justice Award in 2011 and has been president of An Taisce, a major environmental organization in Ireland since 2018.
Well-known author and environmentalist Séan McDonagh demonstrates that the same tools that we use to connect, protect and support us can also be put to use in ways that have a huge negative impact on our privacy, our freedom and our life choices. McDonagh argues that we need to understand and address the potential repercussions of developing technology in an ethical vacuum. Our digital future is fast approaching with little regulation and few institutional policies and protections. Respect for human rights must be at the heart of these new technologies. Robots, Ethics and the Future of Jobs by Séan McDonagh, with a foreword by Karlin Lillington is an accessible and thought-provoking look at the potential of new technology to bring about seismic societal change and a call for discourse and decisions to ensure the best outcomes for humanity.
...a wakeup call for political, civic, media and church leaders, urging a response to the deepening and accelerating pace of technological change and its potential consequences. Pat Cox, President of the European Parliament, 2004-2007

The Way to Manresa
Discoveries along the Ignatian Camino Brendan McManus SJ
This book illustrates key aspects of Ignatian Spirituality via a walk on the Camino Ignacio in Spain, that encountered unexpected roadblocks. The struggle to let go of plans and expectations, the attempt to discern courses of action in difficult situations with incomplete information, reveals to the author that letting go of control allows God in. The Way To Manresa is a roadmap for those seeking to make sense of failure and to reinterpret it in God’s eyes, thus allowing for new life and meaning. The walk also takes in key Ignatian sites such as Loyola, Naverette and Manresa, giving even more insight into Ignatius’ own experience as a pilgrim. Part travel guide, part spirituality guide and part autobiography, this is an ideal book for the armchair pilgrim.

Maynooth College reflects on COVID-19 New Realities in Uncertain Times
Edited by Jeremy Corley, Neil O’Donoghue and Salvador Ryan
Where is God in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic? This volume offers a variety of reflections from the perspectives of theology, scripture, philosophy, ethics, liturgy, pastoral, and canon law. The contributors also cover practical issues like the effect of the pandemic on parish life and the lives of parish clergy, the problems of grief and mourning when funeral attendance is limited and there is little opportunity for pastoral support or support from family and friends. Is this the death knell for religious practice in Ireland with churches closed for weeks on end? What about God and suffering? The volume also includes an interview on the pandemic originally given to The Tablet by Pope Francis.

Hearers of the Word
Praying and exploring the readings Easter and Pentecost: Year B Kieran J O’Mahony OSA
In this, the sixth volume in the Hearers series, Kieran O’Mahony –focusing on the writings of Ss Paul, Luke, and John, the experts on prayer, the Holy Spirit and joy – reminds us that in times of great struggle our faith is a means by which the ‘yes’ of God can seep into us, slowly but surely changing us. With verse-by-verse commentary, a detailed explanation of the Old and New Testament background behind each reading, and suggestions for prayer and reflection, Hearers of the Word asks us to rejoice and go outside, because Christ is risen, the first fruits of all who have fallen asleep!

Dipping Into Life
Reflections on Ordinary Life Alan Hilliard Foreword by Tony Bates
Following on from his books of reflections, Dipping Into Lent and Dipping Into Advent, Alan Hilliard opens up a space for us to engage with our emotional and spiritual response to ordinary life. The loss, fear, isolation, and fragmentation of Covid-19 has caused many of us to pause and take stock of what really matters in our life. Dipping into Life comes at the perfect time to help us with this. Alongside Alan’s reflections are beautiful colour photographs taken and selected by the author himself to aid us in our prayer and meditation.

This book provides us with a brief human insight into life behind bars in one of our penal institutions. It is written from the perspective of someone who has walked the walk with the prisoner for twenty years and now questions the effectiveness of our criminal justice system. The author challenges the use of prisons to deal with addictions, mental health issues and homelessness, arguing that true justice lies in healing for all involved in criminal behaviour, including victim, perpetrator and society. The second part of the book hears the voices of the prisoners in emotionally charged reflections on the reality of life within a prison cell.

Ignatian Spirituality and Interreligious Dialogue Reading Love’s Mystery Michael Barnes SJ
This book about the dialogue between religions is also a book formed in dialogue. Seeking to bring together the two sides of the author’s experience as an academic teacher and pastoral worker, the book can be read both as a practical correlate to his writings on the theology of religions, and, at a more personal level, as a reflection on his experience ‘on the streets’. The author is guided throughout by the conviction that Christian faith comes truly alive when it is communicated and brought into dialogue with what is ‘other’, different, even strange. The twelve linked chapters form a personal introduction, with a degree of autobiography and illustrative anecdote, to an interior dialogue between Christian faith and the challenging context of contemporary religious pluralism.

Counsels of the Holy Spirit A Reading of St Ignatius’s Letters Patrick C Goujon SJ Translated by Joseph Munitiz SJ
Many books have already been written on spiritual counselling, especially in the Ignatian tradition. But very few consider how Ignatius gave spiritual advice in his letters, directed to various and specific situations. If God really leads us in our spiritual journey, as Ignatius believed, what is the role of the spiritual adviser? What part is played by the numerous rules given in the Spiritual Exercises? In six chapters, Patrick C Goujon focuses on eight letters. We are shown how Ignatius deals with decision-making and with obstacles in the spiritual life. He is also revealed giving encouragement and correction and advising about how to offer these to others. His aim is to help people grow in freedom which, in turn, permits them to live according to God’s will. Through his letters, we are allowed to enter not only Ignatius’s study, the famous camerata in Rome, but also into his heart.

Mission to a Suffering People Irish Jesuits 1596 to 1696 Thomas J Morrissey SJ
In 16th and 17th century Ireland religion and nationality fused together in a people’s struggle to survive. In that struggle the country’s links with Europe provided a life line. Members of religious orders, with their international roots, played an important role. Among them were the Irish Jesuits. Author Thomas J Morrissey charts the work in a variety of situations, as well as the persecution of the order which at one stage resulted in the then Jesuit superior dying alone in a shepherd’s hut on an island off Galway. This cycle continued throughout the century as the Jesuits and others nerved themselves to face the Penal Laws in the new century.

Mary Magdalene and the Gardener Women Leaders in the Church Brian Lennon SJ Foreword by Ruth Patterson
Mary Magdalene might be the most misunderstood person in the story of Jesus. Yet, Mary was also the first person to whom Jesus appeared after his resurrection. It was Mary who first took the good news of his world-changing resurrection to the apostles. What can the story of Mary Magdalene and her relationship with Jesus, the ‘Gardener’, tell us about the future of women in the Church? Examining the spiritual significance of Mary’s relationship to Jesus, the trans-historical significance of the resurrection and the contemporary question of the role of women in the Church, Mary Magdalene and the Gardener is a meditation on a world changed by one word; the word that made the resurrection real, and that word is ‘Mary’.

A Calvary Covenant The Stations of The Cross John Cullen
The Stations of the Cross unfold for us a story of passion and pain – where all sources of evil are connected: jealousy, betrayal, cowardice, injustice, cruelty and weakness. Jesus takes everything on himself and assumes all human suffering. The Stations of the Cross are in the present tense: Jesus is condemned, Jesus takes his Cross, Jesus meets, Simon carries, Veronica wipes and Jesus is stripped. It is our tears that flow down his cheek, our pain that is felt in his bruised, battered body. The Stations of the Cross is a prayer in motion. They spell out for us that suffering and death do not have the last word because God cares for all creation.

The Story of Nano Nagle A Life Lived on the Razor’s Edge Anne Lyons PBVM
Abandoning a life of privilege, position and wealth, Nano Nagle chose to live and work in her beloved city of Cork, working in solidarity with those made destitute. As Nano’s journey unfolds it reveals how the steady and alluring presence of God became known to her through the most ordinary events of her life. Her response was one of wholehearted surrender to the call of the gospel and to walking the path of radical discipleship. Driven by a burning passion to help Christ’s marginalised, she dared not only to dream a better life for them but to make this seemingly impossible dream a lived reality. This was the great miracle of her life. At a time when the role of women in shaping society was severely restricted, she lived on the razor’s edge, a woman fearless before a tyrannical world.

St Ignatius of Loyola A Convert’s Story Patrick Corkery SJ
Change is an essential part of life. How we meet that change is where it can get interesting. St Ignatius had a dramatic conversion which shattered not only his leg but all his previous dreams and aspirations. Such a change was not easy to adjust to, and he was forced to enter into a period in the wilderness. This time of reflection not only brought him closer to God, but it also gave him a greater insight into himself. In this booklet, we can witness the transformation which took place in the life of Ignatius from a vainglorious young man obsessed with his own success, to one who put the service of God and other people before anything else. Ignatius’ conversion will allow the reader to get a perspective on how Ignatius faced the challenges which transformed his life, and maybe explore how God was operating within changes brought about in their own lives.
