Welcome to our Spring 2020 Catalogue Dear Reader, We are delighted to present our Spring 2020 catalogue. Join us in celebrating the 500th anniversary of the painter Raphael who was working alongside Michelangelo at the same time that Columbus discovered America and Luther nailed his theses to the door! Fr Michael Collins has written about the painter’s life and interesting times in Raphael’s World. Following the success of Finding God in a Leaf, Brian Grogan SJ brings us the wonderful Creation Walk, The Amazing Story of a Small Blue Planet. Sister Magdalen Lawler has worked for many years with the Jesuits giving retreats and talks. She often uses the image of an icon of Jesus and the Samaritan woman, and now brings us Well of Living Water, a book of reflections on this special image. Did Jesus Really Exist? This is just one of the questions asked and answered by Dutch Jesuit, Nikolaas Sintobin SJ. A really useful ‘catechism’ for old, young, and anyone who wants to know more about our faith. We continue the very popular Hearers of the Word series by Kieran J O’Mahony OSA with volumes covering Lent and the Easter season. The life and work of two very different Jesuits, Thomas Betagh SJ and John Sullivan SJ, are the subject of Irish Jesuits in Penal Times, and a revised edition of Blessed John Sullivan SJ. Finally, we have a lovely new booklet on the rosary by very popular writer, Fr Vincent Sherlock, Telling the Rosary. I hope you enjoy these offerings – we always welcome your feedback! Raphael’s World Michael Collins

Hailed by his contemporaries as ‘the divine painter,’ Raphael Sanzio of Urbino (1483 –1520) was one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance. A contemporary of Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci, he was sought out by popes, kings and aristocrats. Michael Collins’ biography, Raphael’s World, portrays the era in which the painter lived. Born thirty years after the invention of the printing press and nine years before the discovery of the New World, Raphael harnessed the new techniques of printing and the riches which flowed from the Americas into Europe in the early sixteenth century. The 500th anniversary of the death of Raphael occurs on 6 April 2020. There will be a number of events to celebrate the occasion, including the rare display of his Sistine tapestries and a symposium at the Vatican and other galleries around the world. 8 | MP SPRING 2020

Did Jesus really exist? and 51 other questions Nikolaas Sintobin SJ

What do Christians believe? What is typical of the Christian faith and how Christians live their faith? With 52 questions and answers, this book gives you an overview of the Christian faith. It could function as an introduction to Christianity, or a deepening refreshment of the basic elements of our faith in Christ. The questions are taken from life. Did Jesus really exist? What do people do in heaven? Is God a judge who condemns? Why should you forgive yourself? Does suffering make sense? Are the other religions wrong? Has Jesus laughed? Each question and answer can be read in under two minutes. The answer is always followed by two questions to work on individually or together with others. At the end of the book is a short glossery of 52 common words such as prayer, grace, heaven, Easter, sin, sacrament and devil.

Well of Living Water

Jesus and the Samaritan Woman Magdalen Lawler SND

Magdalen Lawler discovered this icon of the Woman at the Well many years ago. She has used it ever since as the inspiration for innumerable retreats and conferences. Its appeal to her is that it seems to span the traditions of West and East with its lyrical beauty and its deep theology. The icon has encouraged Magdalen to study the gospel passage of the Woman at the Well in detail and to research many accounts of life in first-century Palestine. Now her research and retreats are brought together in this beautifully illustrated series of reflections on the Samaritan Woman at the Well.

Magdalen Lawler SND is a sister of Notre Dame. She is a wellknown retreat leader, based in the UK, with strong connections to the Irish Jesuits. MP SPRING 2020 | 11

Irish Jesuits in Penal Times 1695-1811: Thomas Betagh and his Companions Thomas J Morrissey SJ

This account of the Irish Jesuits from 1695 to 1811 is concerned with those who lived and worked in Dublin and, in particular, with a central figure, the quite remarkable educationalist and pastor, Thomas Betagh. As we shall see, two other Jesuits also played a large part in the life of Betagh: John Austin, who was his teacher and subsequently a colleague, and James Philip Mulcaile, who was a friend, colleague and near contemporary. The life and work of Betagh can only be understood in the context of his time: not only the history of Ireland in the eighteenth century, but also political, cultural and religious developments in western Europe.

John Sullivan SJ was born in Dublin in 1861. Once dubbed ‘the best dressed man about Dublin’, he seemed destined, like his father, for a career in law. Then, following a conversion to Catholicism, at the age of 35 he entered the Jesuit novitiate in Tullamore, County Offaly. Immediately after his ordination, he was sent to Clongowes Wood College, County Kildare, where he spent most of his remaining years. At Clongowes, he became renowned for the hours he spent in prayer, his asceticism, and for his kindness and wisdom. His reputation spread outside the college walls, with many people calling on him in their hour of need. His love of the poor and sick led to miraculous cures being attributed to him. After his death in 1933, devotion to him continued to grow, and in 1947 the first stage of the process of Canonisation was introduced. John Sullivan SJ was beatified in Dublin in May 2017.

Newman: A Short Biography

9781788121057

Michael Collins

Paperback

A short, accessible biography of Cardinal Newman, who was recently canonised in Rome. John Henry Newman was an important and controversial figure in the religious history of England in the nineteenth century. An esteemed academic, prolific author and convert from the Church of England to Catholicism, Newman was a complex and conflicted individual. Intensely loyal to his friends, highly-strung, kind-hearted and tenacious, Newman combined the best of both the Anglican and Catholic traditions. His volume of lectures entitled The Idea of a University, explained his philosophy of education. During the four years he spent in Dublin he was instrumental in the founding of the Catholic University of Ireland in 1854; this later evolved into University College Dublin, now the largest university in Ireland. John Henry Newman was declared a saint on 13 October 2019.

Pastoral Ministry in Changing Times The Past, Present & Future of the Catholic Church in Ireland

Aidan Ryan. Foreword by Bishop Colm O’Reilly

An examination of the ecclesial change in Ireland that the author suggests is mainly a result of social and economic change and of the vastly increased influence of the media, both mainstream and social. The book concludes with possible ways of renewal for the future.

This is a wise little book written in an accessible style which deserves to be widely read. - Methodist Recorder 20 | MP SPRING 2020

Saintly Feasts

Food for Saints and Scholars Martina Maher and Colette Scully with Dries van den Akker SJ

A wonderful collection of delicious recipes, originally prepared as the main Sunday meal at the Jesuit house, ‘Manresa’, in Birmingham. Each recipe is accompanied by a saint with a (sometimes tenuous) connection to the ingredients or the dish itself. A brief life of each saint gives the book a very special dimension. Two Irish women living in Birmingham wanted to give something back to the Jesuits. They decided a way to do so was to cook Sunday dinner for them, and they continued to do this for twentytwo years. Now in their 90s and 70s respectively, they have brought their years of Sunday cooking ideas together in this very special collection. All royalties to the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS).
